RESEARCH DESIGN: Community-engaged qualitative study using inductive thematic analysis of semistructured interviews. OBJECTIVE: To understand Latine immigrants' recent prenatal care experiences and develop community-informed strategies to mitigate policy-related chilling effects on prenatal care utilization. BACKGROUND: Decreased health care utilization among immigrants due to punitive immigration policies (ie, the "chilling effect") has been well-documented among Latine birthing people both pre and postnatally. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Currently or recently pregnant immigrant Latine people in greater Philadelphia were recruited from an obstetric clinic, 2 pediatric primary care clinics, and 2 community-based organization client pools. Thematic saturation was achieved with 24 people. Participants' pregnancy narratives and their perspectives on how health care providers and systems could make prenatal care feel safer and more comfortable for immigrants. RESULTS: Participants' recommendations for mitigating the chilling effect during the prenatal period included training prenatal health care providers to sensitively initiate discussions about immigrants' rights and reaffirm confidentiality around immigration status. Participants suggested that health care systems should expand sources of information for pregnant immigrants, either by partnering with community organizations to disseminate information or by increasing access to trusted individuals knowledgeable about immigrants' rights to health care. Participants also suggested training non-medical office staff in the use of interpreters. CONCLUSION: Immigrant Latine pregnant and birthing people in greater Philadelphia described ongoing fear and confusion regarding the utilization of prenatal care, as well as experiences of discrimination. Participants' suggestions for mitigating immigration-related chilling effects can be translated into potential policy and programmatic interventions which could be implemented locally and evaluated for broader applicability.

Introduction: Intracellular communication is essential for the maintenance of the anterior pituitary gland plasticity. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether GPCR-Gαi modulates basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2)-induced proliferative activity in normal pituitary cell populations. Methods: Anterior pituitary primary cell cultures from Wistar female rats were treated with FGF2 (10ng/mL) or somatostatin analog (SSTa, 100nM) alone or co-incubated with or without the inhibitors of GPCR-Gαi, pertussis toxin (PTX, 500nM), MEK inhibitor (U0126, 100µM) or PI3K inhibitor (LY 294002, 10 µM). Results: FGF2 increased and SSTa decreased the lactotroph and somatotroph BrdU uptak2e (p<0.05) whereas the FGF2-induced S-phase entry was prevented by SSTa co-incubation in both cell types, with these effects being reverted by PTX, U0126 or LY294002 pre-incubation. The inhibition of lactotroph and somatotroph mitosis was associated with a downregulation of c-Jun expression, a decrease of phosphorylated (p) ERK and pAKT. Furthermore, SSTa was observed to inhibit the S-phase entry induced by FGF2, resulting in a further increase in the number of cells in the G1 phase and a concomitant reduction in the number of cells in the S phases (p< 0.05), effects related to a decrease of cyclin D1 expression and an increase in the expression of the cell cycle inhibitors p27 and p21. Discussion: In summary, the GPCR-Gαi activated by SSTa blocked the pro-proliferative effect of FGF2 in normal pituitary cells via a MEK-dependent mechanism, which acts as a mediator of both anti and pro-mitogenic signals, that may regulate the principal effectors of the G1 to S-phase transition.

BACKGROUND: Fosfomycin is a potentially attractive option as step-down therapy for bacteraemic urinary tract infections (BUTI), but available data are scarce. Our objective was to compare the effectiveness and safety of fosfomycin trometamol and other oral drugs as step-down therapy in patients with BUTI due to MDR Escherichia coli (MDR-Ec). METHODS: Participants in the FOREST trial (comparing IV fosfomycin with ceftriaxone or meropenem for BUTI caused by MDR-Ec in 22 Spanish hospitals from June 2014 to December 2018) who were stepped-down to oral fosfomycin (3 g q48h) or other drugs were included. The primary endpoint was clinical and microbiological cure (CMC) 5-7 days after finalization of treatment. A multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression to estimate the association of oral step-down with fosfomycin with CMC adjusted for confounders. RESULTS: Overall, 61 patients switched to oral fosfomycin trometamol and 47 to other drugs (cefuroxime axetil, 28; amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, 7 each; ciprofloxacin, 5) were included. CMC was reached by 48/61 patients (78.7%) treated with fosfomycin trometamol and 38/47 (80.9%) with other drugs (difference, -2.2; 95% CI: -17.5 to 13.1; P = 0.38). Subgroup analyses provided similar results. Relapses occurred in 9/61 (15.0%) and 2/47 (4.3%) of patients, respectively (P = 0.03). The adjusted OR for CMC was 1.11 (95% CI: 0.42-3.29, P = 0.75). No relevant differences in adverse events were seen. CONCLUSIONS: Fosfomycin trometamol might be a reasonable option as step-down therapy in patients with BUTI due to MDR-Ec but the higher rate of relapses would need further assessment.

RESUMO

This paper describes the development of a coating for cotton and polypropylene (PP) fabrics based on a polymeric matrix embedded with cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu2O@SDS NPs) in order to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 and manufactured by a simple process using a dip-assisted layer-by-layer technology, at low curing temperature and without the need for expensive equipment, capable of achieving disinfection rates of up to 99%. The polymeric bilayer coating makes the surface of the fabrics hydrophilic, enabling the transportation of the virus-infected droplets to achieve the rapid inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by contact with the Cu2O@SDS NPs incorporated in the coated fabrics.

INTRODUCTION: Macroautophagy is a lysosome-mediated degradation process that controls the quality of cytoplasmic components and organelles, with its regulation depending on autophagy-related proteins (Atg) and with Beclin1/Atg6 and microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3/Atg8) being key players in the mammalian autophagy. As reports on this mechanism in the field of pituitary neuropathology and neuroendocrinology are scarce, our study analyzed the ultrastructural signs of macroautophagy and the expression of Beclin1 and LC3 proteins in human functioning PitNETs and in experimental pituitary tumors. METHODS: A group of humans functioning PitNETs and an experimental lactotroph model in rats of the F344 strain stimulated with estradiol benzoate (BE) were used. Ultrastructural and molecular evidence of the macroautophagic process was evaluated using different techniques. RESULTS: In functioning PitNETs cohort, 60% exhibited evidence of macroautophagy, with a significant difference found for Beclin1 and LC3 between macro- and micro-PitNETs (p < 0.05). In the experimental model, the expression of both Beclin1 and LC3 proteins was immunopositive in normal and tumoral glands when analyzed by immunofluorescence, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry. In the experimental model, protein expression was associated with increased glandular size and weight. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed evidence of macroautophagy at the pituitary level and the important role of Beclin1 and LC3 in the progression of functioning PitNETs, implying that this mechanism participate in regulating pituitary cell growth.

Sternal surgical wound infection (SSWI) in cardiac surgery is associated with increased morbidity. We investigated the incidence of SSWI, the main germs implicated and predictors of SSWI. Prospective study including patients undergoing full median sternotomy between January 2017 and December 2019. Patients were followed-up for 3 months after hospital discharge. All sternal wound infections up to 90 days after discharge were considered SSWI. 1004 patients were included. During follow-up, 68 (6.8%) patients presented SSWI. Patients with SSWI had a higher incidence of postoperative renal failure (29.4% vs 17.1%, P = .007), a higher incidence of early postoperative reoperation for non-infectious causes (42.6% vs 9.1%, P < .001), longer ICU stay (3 [2-9] days vs 2 [2-4] days, P = .006), and longer hospital stay (24.5 [14.8-38.3] days vs 10 [7-18] days, P < .001). Gram-positive germs were presented in 49% of the cultures, and gram-negative bacteria in 35%. Early reoperation for non-infectious causes (OR 4.90, 95% CI 1.03-23.7), and a longer ICU stay (OR 1.37 95% CI 1.10-1.72) were independent predictors of SSWI. SSWI is rare but leads to more postoperative complications. The need for early reoperation because of non-infectious cause and a longer ICU stay were independently associated with SSWI.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) as pre-exposure prophylaxis on COVID-19 risk. METHODS: EPICOS is a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial conducted in Spain, Bolivia, and Venezuela. Healthcare workers with negative SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG test were randomly assigned to the following: daily TDF/FTC plus HCQ for 12 weeks, TDF/FTC plus HCQ placebo, HCQ plus TDF/FTC placebo, and TDF/FTC placebo plus HCQ placebo. Randomization was performed in groups of four. Primary outcome was laboratory-confirmed, symptomatic COVID-19. We also studied any (symptomatic or asymptomatic) COVID-19. We compared group-specific 14-week risks via differences and ratios with 95% CIs. RESULTS: Of 1002 individuals screened, 926 (92.4%) were eligible and there were 14 cases of symptomatic COVID-19: 220 were assigned to the TDF/FTC plus HCQ group (3 cases), 231 to the TDF/FTC placebo plus HCQ group (3 cases), 233 to the TDF/FTC plus HCQ placebo group (3 cases), and 223 to the double placebo group (5 cases). Compared with the double placebo group, 14-week risk ratios (95% CI) of symptomatic COVID-19 were 0.39 (0.00-1.98) for TDF + HCQ, 0.34 (0.00-2.06) for TDF, and 0.49 (0.00-2.29) for HCQ. Corresponding risk ratios of any COVID-19 were 0.51 (0.21-1.00) for TDF + HCQ, 0.81 (0.44-1.49) for TDF, and 0.73 (0.41-1.38) for HCQ. Adverse events were generally mild. DISCUSSION: The target sample size was not met. Our findings are compatible with both benefit and harm of pre-exposure prophylaxis with TDF/FTC and HCQ, alone or in combination, compared with placebo.

Schizotypal personality pathology (SZP) is a persistent and debilitating problem for a substantial number of people. Research on SZP has typically emphasized its biological and more specifically genetic origins. However, recent research has highlighted the potential influence of trauma on SZP. This research is promising, although it has thus far focused primarily on type of trauma (e.g., different types of abuse vs. neglect in childhood) rather than who perpetrated the trauma. Previous studies on both personality pathology in general and psychotic-spectrum experiences characteristic of SZP in particular have highlighted the influence of trauma perpetrated by someone with whom the trauma survivor was close (i.e., betrayal trauma), although this has not yet been examined with respect to SZP specifically. In this study we examined this, evaluating the influence of trauma with varying degrees of betrayal on SZP in a sample of adults (N = 364) using structural equation modeling. Results suggest that interpersonal trauma in general was associated with higher levels of SZP. Findings further indicate that for women but not men, trauma with a high degree of betrayal was uniquely associated with SZP. These results underscore the potential role of trauma in SZP and have implications for future research on and intervention with people with high levels of SZP.

Abstract: The taxonomy of Phyllanthaceae Martinov in the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil was updated through the analysis of approximately 200 specimens deposited in regional herbaria as well as field observations. Thirty-five species were recorded, belonging to seven genera: Amanoa Aubl. (1 species), Astrocasia B.L. Rob. & Millsp. (1), Discocarpus Klotzsch (1), Hieronyma Allemão (2), Margaritaria L.f. (1), Phyllanthus L. (28), and Richeria Vahl (1). Of the 35, six are new records for Alagoas State, two for Rio Grande do Norte, four for Paraíba, and six for Sergipe. Among the recorded species, 18 are endemic to Brazil, and of those, 11 are endemic to the Brazilian northeast and nine are exclusive to the Atlantic Forest. An identification key, comments on their taxonomy, phenology and geographic distributions, species conservation status, distribution maps, and illustrations of the species are provided.


Resumo: Este estudo teve como objetivo atualizar a taxonomia de Phyllanthaceae Martinov na Mata Atlântica do Nordeste brasileiro, através da análise de aproximadamente 200 espécimes depositados nos herbários da região e observação das espécies em campo. Foram registradas 35 espécies, pertencentes a sete gêneros: Amanoa Aubl. (1 espécie), Astrocasia B.L. Rob. & Millsp. (1), Discocarpus Klotzsch (1), Hieronyma Allemão (2), Margaritaria L.f. (1), Phyllanthus L. (29), e Richeria Vahl (1). Das 35 espécies, seis são novos registros para Alagoas, dois para o Rio Grande do Norte, quatro para Paraíba e seis para Sergipe. Dentre as espécies registradas, 18 são endêmicas do Brasil, destas, onze são endêmicas do Nordeste e nove são exclusivas da Mata Atlântica. São fornecidos chave de identificação, comentários taxonômicos, fenológicos e de distribuição geográfica, bem como o status de conservação das espécies. Além disso, são apresentados mapas de distribuição e ilustrações das espécies.

Background: Debridement, antibiotic agents, and implant retention (DAIR) is a currently accepted approach for the treatment of early prosthetic joint infections (PJI). The success of a DAIR procedure has shown variable results throughout the published literature. Scoring systems such as the Kidney, Liver, Index surgery, Cemented prosthesis, and C-reactive protein value (KLIC) score for the selection of patients that are likely to benefit from DAIR have proved to be helpful in decision making. Our study aims to further validate the KLIC score using a large external multicentric cohort and to evaluate other risk factors for failure. Patients and Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients with an early acute PJI who were treated with DAIR and recorded in a database of eight Spanish university hospitals was performed. According to pre-operative variables of the KLIC study, patients were categorized into five groups: group A, ≤2 points; group B, 2.5-3.5 points; group C, 4-5 points; group D, 5.5-6.5 points; and group E, ≥7 points. Failure rates were compared between groups at 60 days and after 60 days of DAIR. Further variables for risk of failure were also analyzed. Results: A total of 455 patients with early acute PJI were included in the analyses. At 60 days, patients presenting with pre-operative elevated C-reactive protein serum levels, Staphylococcus aureus, and polymicrobial infections were associated with failure. Failure rates recorded were 12% for group A (n = 210), 18% for group B (n = 83), 26% for group C (n = 89), 24% for group D (n = 66), and 0% for group E (n = 7). Univariable analysis between consecutive groups of the KLIC score showed no differences for failure before 60 days of the DAIR procedure. Scheduled surgery and having the procedure performed by a specialized unit were also identified as important factors for DAIR success. Conclusions: Our results suggest the KLIC score was not useful for predicting failure in our cohort. Furthermore, our results indicate a specialized unit should conduct DAIR procedures.

Importance: The consumption of broad-spectrum drugs has increased as a consequence of the spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli. Finding alternatives for these infections is critical, for which some neglected drugs may be an option. Objective: To determine whether fosfomycin is noninferior to ceftriaxone or meropenem in the targeted treatment of bacteremic urinary tract infections (bUTIs) due to MDR E coli. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter, randomized, pragmatic, open clinical trial was conducted at 22 Spanish hospitals from June 2014 to December 2018. Eligible participants were adult patients with bacteremic urinary tract infections due to MDR E coli; 161 of 1578 screened patients were randomized and followed up for 60 days. Data were analyzed in May 2021. Interventions: Patients were randomized 1 to 1 to receive intravenous fosfomycin disodium at 4 g every 6 hours (70 participants) or a comparator (ceftriaxone or meropenem if resistant; 73 participants) with the option to switch to oral fosfomycin trometamol for the fosfomycin group or an active oral drug or parenteral ertapenem for the comparator group after 4 days. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was clinical and microbiological cure (CMC) 5 to 7 days after finalization of treatment; a noninferiority margin of 7% was considered. Results: Among 143 patients in the modified intention-to-treat population (median [IQR] age, 72 [62-81] years; 73 [51.0%] women), 48 of 70 patients (68.6%) treated with fosfomycin and 57 of 73 patients (78.1%) treated with comparators reached CMC (risk difference, -9.4 percentage points; 1-sided 95% CI, -21.5 to ∞ percentage points; P = .10). While clinical or microbiological failure occurred among 10 patients (14.3%) treated with fosfomycin and 14 patients (19.7%) treated with comparators (risk difference, -5.4 percentage points; 1-sided 95% CI, -∞ to 4.9; percentage points; P = .19), an increased rate of adverse event-related discontinuations occurred with fosfomycin vs comparators (6 discontinuations [8.5%] vs 0 discontinuations; P = .006). In an exploratory analysis among a subset of 38 patients who underwent rectal colonization studies, patients treated with fosfomycin acquired a new ceftriaxone-resistant or meropenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria at a decreased rate compared with patients treated with comparators (0 of 21 patients vs 4 of 17 patients [23.5%]; 1-sided P = .01). Conclusions and Relevance: This study found that fosfomycin did not demonstrate noninferiority to comparators as targeted treatment of bUTI from MDR E coli; this was due to an increased rate of adverse event-related discontinuations. This finding suggests that fosfomycin may be considered for selected patients with these infections. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02142751.

Phthalates are synthetic chemicals widely used to make polyvinylchloride (PVC) soft and flexible. Of these, Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most commonly used, with high human exposure occurring as early as the fetal developmental stage and affecting the endocrine system. We focused on the perinatal DEHP effects on pituitary estrogen receptor (ER) expression in male rats, explored their impact on lactotroph and somatotroph cell growth, and evaluated the direct effects of this phthalate on pituitary cell cultures. Our results showed that DEHP perinatal exposure was unable to modify the ERα+ pituitary cell number from prepuberal rats, but increased ERß+ cells. In adulthood, the pituitary ERα+ cells underwent a slight decrease with ERß showing the greatest changes, and with a significant increase observed in somatotroph cells. Also, in vitro, DEHP reduced the ERα+ cells, increased the percentage of ERß+ pituitary cells and modified the Ki67 index, as well as decreasing the lactotrophs and increasing the somatotroph cells. In conclusion, the present study showed that DEHP induced ER expression changes in normal pituitary glands from male rats in in vivo and in vitro conditions, suggesting that DEHP could differentially modulate lactotroph and somatotroph cell growth, possibly as a consequence of ER imbalance.

To investigate the putative stem cell/tumor stem cell (SC/TSC) niche contribution to hyperplasic/adenomatous pituitary lesions, we analyzed variation in the pituitary stem cell population during the development of experimental pituitary tumors. Pituitary tumors were induced in female F344 rats with estradiol benzoate for 5, 10, 20 and 30 days. Cells positive for GFRa2, Sox2, Sox9, Nestin, CD133 and CD44 were identified in the marginal zone and in the adenoparenchyma in both control and 30D groups, with predominant adenoparenchyma localization of GRFa2 and SOX9 found in tumoral pituitaries. GFRa2, Nestin, CD133 and CD44 were upregulated at the initial stages of tumor growth, whereas Sox9 significantly decreased at 5D, with Sox2 remaining invariable during the hyperplasic/adenomatous development. In addition, isolated pituispheres from normal and tumoral pituitary glands enriched in SC/TSC were characterized. Pituispheres from the 30D glands were positive for the above-mentioned markers and showed a significant increase in the proliferation. In conclusion, our data revealed pituitary SC pool fluctuations during hyperplastic/adenomatous development, with differential localization of the SC/TSC niche in this process. These findings may help to provide a better understanding of these cell populations, which is crucial for achieving advancements in the field of pituitary tumor biology.

Octreotide (OCT) is used to inhibit hormone secretion and growth in somatotroph tumors, although a significant percentage of patients are resistant. It has also been tested in nonfunctioning (NF) tumors but with poor results, with these outcomes having been associated with SSTR2 levels and impaired signaling. We investigated whether OCT inhibitory effects can be improved by TGF-ß1 in functioning and nonfunctioning somatotroph tumor cells. OCT effects on hormone secretion and proliferation were analyzed in the presence of TGF-ß1 in WT and SSTR2-overexpressing secreting GH3 and silent somatotroph tumor cells. The mechanism underlying these effects was assessed by studying SSTR and TGFßR signaling pathways mediators. In addition, we analyzed the effects of OCT/TGF-ß1 treatment on tumor growth and cell proliferation in vivo. The inhibitory effects of OCT on GH- and PRL-secretion and proliferation were improved in the presence of TGF-ß1, as well as by SSTR2 overexpression. The OCT/TGF-ß1 treatment induced downregulation of pERK1/2 and pAkt, upregulation of pSmad3, and inhibition of cyclin D1. In vivo experiments showed that OCT in the presence of TGF-ß1 blocked tumor volume growth, decreased cell proliferation, and increased tumor necrosis. These results indicate that SSTR2 levels and the stimulation of TGF-ß1/TGFßR/Smad2/3 pathway are important for strengthening the antiproliferative and antisecretory effects of OCT.

El objetivo de este artículo es determinar si los factores socioeconómicos inciden en las complicaciones posoperatorias de la colecistectomía. Para ello, se definió realizar un estudio de tipo observacional, analítico y enfoque cuantitativo, en 100 pacientes en los que se les realizó colecistectomía. Se aplicó un modelo de regresión logística en el que se incorporaron como variables, factores de riesgo, características socioeconómicas, junto con una variable de control. Se aplicaron tres modelos con variables dependientes alternativas que están delimitadas por el tipo de complicación posoperatoria registrado. Los resultados encontrados mostraron que las mujeres manifiestan un mayor riesgo de presentar complicaciones posteriores a la colecistectomía, igual ocurre en los pacientes de mayor edad. Asimismo el riesgo es mucho menor en las personas con niveles de educación superior y en los pacientes en los que se realizó colecistectomía laparoscópica, alcanzando solo un 5% de riesgo de presentar complicaciones. Las complicaciones posoperatorias luego de la colecistectomía se minimizan al emplear la técnica laparoscópica y los factores socioeconómicos incidirían en el riesgo de padecer complicaciones posoperatorias luego de dicha cirugía, lo que la convierte a la colecistectomía laparoscópica en una operación segura y con muchos otros beneficios y ventajas sobre la cirugía tradicional o convencional.


The article ́s goal isto determine if socioeconomic factors influence the postoperative complications of cholecystectomy. For this, the observational study was defined, analytical and quantitative study was conducted in 100 patients who underwent cholecystectomy. A logistic regression model was applied in which risk factors, socioeconomic characteristics, along with a control variable, were incorporated as variables. Three models were run with alternative dependent variables that are delimited by the type of postoperative complication recorded. The results found showed that women show a higher risk of presenting complications after cholecystectomy, the same occurs in older patients. Likewise, the risk is much lower in people with higher education levels and in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, they only have a 5% risk of presenting complications. Postoperative complications after cholecystectomy are minimized by using the laparoscopic technique and socioeconomic factors would influence the risk of suffering postoperative complications after said surgery, which makes laparoscopic cholecystectomy a safe operation with many other benefits and advantages over traditional or conventional surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Although bone transport is generally accepted as the gold standard for the treatment of segmental septic bone defects, some aspects of its practical application are still open to debate. We present our results in this field and compare them with the series published so far. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed all our patients (2010-2018) that underwent a bone transport procedure in the lower limb due to a septic bone defect. We calculated the bone healing index (BHI), the external fixation index (EFI), the rate of complications and the clinical results. We statistically compared our results with 63 publications with a similar scope. RESULTS: Thirty-five patients (30 M/5F) with a mean age of 40 years and a mean follow-up of 45 months were included. Bone segment was 24 T/11F and mean defect was 8.4 cm (7.34 T/ 10.73F). Mean global BHI was 45.62 days/cm (48.16 T/40.09F). Mean EFI was 2.37 months/cm. Results were excellent in 9 patients, good in 23 and bad in 3. Bone graft was used in 60% of the cases. DISCUSSION: The size of our series is similar to previously published ones, although the mean age of our patients is higher and they present a larger bone defect. BHI of our series is similar to that of other series, although EFI is significantly higher. The number of complications is also in line with the existing literature. CONCLUSION: The use of a two-stage technique for managing segmental bone defects of septic origin in the lower extremity is a valid alternative. Our series shows results comparable to the current literature.

BACKGROUND: PTP4A3 is a subclass of a protein tyrosine phosphatase super family and is expressed in a range of epithelial neoplasms. We evaluated PTP4A3 expression and its association with clinicopathological parameters in different types of functioning pituitary adenomas. METHODS: A total of 34 functioning pituitary adenomas samples were evaluated in this observational study. PTP4A3 expression was examined by immunohistochemical staining, and, possible correlations between PTP4A3 and some clinicopathological variables were investigated. RESULTS: PTP4A3 was expressed in 19 out of 34 tumours (55%), at the cytoplasmic level of tumorous cells. Moreover, there was significant association (p=0.042) between PTP4A3 expression and tumorous size. CONCLUSIONS: PTP4A3 was expressed in more than half of the tumours analysed, with there being a significant association with the tumorous size of functioning adenomas. This allows to speculate that PTP4A3 may regulate tumour growth, although further investigations are necessary to determine if this phosphatase can serve as a biomarker or used as a therapeutic target in pituitary macroadenomas.

Introducción: La bioquímica, como ciencia particular dentro de las ciencias médicas, ha tenido un gran desarrollo. Las enzimas lipasas se obtienen de organismos vivos que abundan en la naturaleza y han sido utilizadas en la producción de alimentos, jabones, detergentes, aceites y otros productos industriales. Actualmente se han logrado nuevas clasificaciones de estas, subdivididas en grupos y subgrupos. Se aprecia además interés de utilizarlas en la producción de biodiesel y en la biotecnología y genética médica. Objetivo: Recopilar las principales consideraciones teóricas actualizadas acerca la caracterización, clasificación y usos de las enzimas lipasas. Método: La búsqueda y análisis de la información se realizó desde el primero de septiembre al 23 de diciembre de 2019, con un total de 50 artículos publicados en las bases de datos PubMed, Hinari, SciELO y Medline, mediante el gestor de búsqueda y administrador de referencias EndNote. se utilizaron 42 citas seleccionadas para realizar la revisión, de ellas 38 de los últimos cinco años. Conclusiones: Las enzimas lipasas son proteínas que catalizan procesos biológicos. son activas en un amplio rango de sustrato, realizan reacciones de síntesis, hidrólisis o de intercambio de grupos. Poseen diversas actividades catalíticas, son menos costosas y menos contaminantes, se obtienen en gran cantidad, se producen de forma regular. Son estables y su proceso de producción es más factible y seguro. Se caracterizan por su capacidad de catalizar reacciones de acidólisis, alcohólisis, aminólisis, esterificación, interesterificación y transesterificación, entre otras características(AU)


Introduction: Biochemistry has experienced great development as a particular medical science. Lipase enzymes are obtained from living organisms which are abundant in nature, and have been used in the manufacture of foods, soap, detergents, oils and other industrial products. New classifications are now available of lipase enzymes, and they have been subdivided into groups and subgroups. An interest is also noticed in using them for biodiesel production and in biotechnology and medical genetics. Objective: Collect the main updated theoretical considerations about the characterization, classification and uses of lipase enzymes. Method: The search for and analysis of the information extended from 1 September to 23 December 2019, for a total 50 papers published in the databases PubMed, Hinari, SciELO and Medline, using the search engine and reference manager EndNote. Forty-two citations were selected for the review, 38 of which were from the last five years. Conclusions: Lipase enzymes are proteins that catalyze biological processes. They are active in a wide range of substrates, performing synthesis reactions, hydrolysis or group exchanges. They display a variety of catalytic activities, are less costly and less contaminating, are obtained in large quantities and are produced in a regular manner. They are stable and their production process is more feasible and safer. They are characterized by their ability to catalyze reactions of acidolysis, alcoholysis, aminolysis, esterification, interesterification and transesterification, among other characteristics(AU)
