RESUMO

The optical properties available for an object are most often fragmented and insufficient for photorealistic rendering of the object. We propose a procedure for digitizing a translucent object with sufficient information for predictive rendering of its appearance. Based on object material descriptions, we compute optical properties and validate or adjust this object appearance model based on comparison of simulation with spectrophotometric measurements of the bidirectional scattering-surface reflectance distribution function (BSSRDF). To ease this type of comparison, we provide an efficient simulation tool that computes the BSSRDF for a particular light-view configuration. Even with just a few configurations, the localized lighting in BSSRDF measurements is useful for assessing the appropriateness of computed or otherwise acquired optical properties. To validate an object appearance model in a more common lighting environment, we render the appearance of the obtained digital twin and assess the photorealism of our renderings through pixel-by-pixel comparison with photographs of the physical object.

Purpose We investigated the impact of intravascular ultrasound guidance on reducing the incidence of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods Ninety-nine patients were enrolled in this prospective cohort who were not randomly assigned to angiography-guided percutaneous coronary intervention or intravascular ultrasound-guided percutaneous coronary intervention. The patients were hospitalized at the Vietnam National Heart Institute - Bach Mai Hospital between 2019 and 2020. Acute kidney injury incidence during hospitalization was the primary endpoint. Results A total of 99 patients were divided into two groups: the intravascular ultrasound-guided group (33 participants) and the angiography-guided group (66 participants). The mean ± SD contrast volume of each group was 95.2 ± 37.1 mL and 133.0 ± 36.0 mL for the ultrasound-guided and angiography-guided groups, with P < 0.0001. Intravascular imaging-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (IVUS-guided PCI) was associated with reduced acute kidney injury incidence during hospitalization: 0.0% vs. 12.12% and P = 0.049. Conclusions Intravascular ultrasound is a safe imaging tool that guides percutaneous coronary intervention and significantly reduces the rate of acute kidney injury compared to angiography alone. Patients who have a high chance of experiencing acute kidney injury benefit from using intravascular ultrasound.

Burr entrapment is a serious risk when performing rotational atherectomy on specific anatomical features of lesions such as tortuosity, calcification, and acute angulation. This occurrence, known as the Kokeshi phenomenon in Japanese, is caused by the burr's proximal section being unable to ablate while pulling back the burr, leaving the distal end of the burr covered in diamond crumbs capable of lesion ablation following rotation. There are reports of different approaches used to retrieve an entrapped rotablator burr. In this case, we demonstrate that the ping-pong and mother-in-child techniques, which use separate guide catheters to engage the same coronary artery wiring across the lesion afterward and deep engagement of guide extension catheter manual traction, are highly effective and secure methods for retrieval.

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices have been used extensively both inside and outside of the hospital setting. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in some contexts, there was an increased need to remotely monitor pulse and saturated oxygen for patients due to the lack of staff and bedside monitors. OBJECTIVE: A prototype of a remote monitoring system using wearable pulse oximeter devices was implemented at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from August to December 2021. The aim of this work was to support the ongoing implementation of the remote monitoring system. METHODS: We used an action learning approach with rapid pragmatic methods, including informal discussions and observations as well as a feedback survey form designed based on the technology acceptance model to assess the use and acceptability of the system. Based on these results, we facilitated a meeting using user-centered design principles to explore user needs and ideas about its development in more detail. RESULTS: In total, 21 users filled in the feedback form. The mean technology acceptance model scores ranged from 3.5 (for perceived ease of use) to 4.4 (for attitude) with behavioral intention (3.8) and perceived usefulness (4.2) scoring in between. Those working as nurses scored higher on perceived usefulness, attitude, and behavioral intention than did physicians. Based on informal discussions, we realized there was a mismatch between how we (ie, the research team) and the ward teams perceived the use and wider purpose of the technology. CONCLUSIONS: Designing and implementing the devices to be more nurse-centric from their introduction could have helped to increase their efficiency and use during the complex pandemic period.

The aim of the present paper was to report the chemical constituents and antimicrobial activity of essential hydrodistilled from the leaves and trunk of Aquilaria banaensis P.H.Hô (Thymelaeceae) from Vietnam. The essential oils were analysed comprehensively for their constituents by using Gas chromatography coupled with Mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The antimicrobial activity was determined by agar well diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The leaf essential oil comprised mainly of sesquiterpenes while fatty acids constitutes the bulk of the trunk essential oil. The main constituents of the leaf essential oil were ß-caryophyllene (17.11%), α-selinene (10.99%), α-humulene (8.98%), ß-selinene (8.01%), ß-guaiol (6.69%) and ß-elemene (5.65%). However, hexadecanoic acid (48.46%), oleic acid (19.80%) and tetradecanoic acid (5.32%) were the major compounds identified in the trunk essential oil. The trunk essential oil displayed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of about 256.0 µg/mL.

Field-effect transistor-based biosensors have gained increasing interest due to their reactive surface to external stimuli and the adaptive feedback required for advanced sensing platforms in biohybrid neural interfaces. However, complex probing methods for surface functionalization remain a challenge that limits the industrial implementation of such devices. Herein, a simple, label-free biosensor based on molybdenum oxide (MoO3) with dopamine-regulated plasticity is demonstrated. Dopamine oxidation facilitated locally at the channel surface initiates a charge transfer mechanism between the molecule and the oxide, altering the channel conductance and successfully emulating the tunable synaptic weight by neurotransmitter activity. The oxygen level of the channel is shown to heavily affect the device's electrochemical properties, shifting from a nonreactive metallic characteristic to highly responsive semiconducting behavior. Controllable responsivity is achieved by optimizing the channel's dimension, which allows the devices to operate in wide ranges of dopamine concentration, from 100 nM to sub-mM levels, with excellent selectivity compared with K+, Na+, and Ca2+.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of acute heart failure (AHF) prognosis is primordial in emergency setting. Although AHF management is exhaustively codified using mortality predictors, there is currently no recommended scoring system for assessing prognosis. The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) recommends a comprehensive assessment of global AHF prognosis, considering in-hospital mortality, early rehospitalization rates and the length of hospital stay. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to prospectively evaluate the performance of the Multiple Estimation of risk based on the Emergency department Spanish Score In patients with AHF (MEESSI-AHF) score in estimating short prognosis according to the ESC guidelines. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PATIENTS: A multicenter study was conducted between November 2020, and June 2021. Adult patients who presented to eleven French hospitals for AHF were prospectively included. OUTCOME MEASURES AND ANALYSIS: According to MEESSI-AHF score, patients were stratified in four categories corresponding to mortality risk: low-, intermediate-, high- and very high-risk groups. The primary outcome was the number of days alive and out of the hospital during the 30-day period following admission to the Emergency Department (ED). RESULTS: In total, 390 patients were included. The number of days alive and out of the hospital decreased significatively with increasing MEESSI-AHF risk groups, ranging from 21.2 days (20.3-22.3 days) for the low-risk, 20 days (19.3-20.5 days) for intermediate risk,18.6 days (17.6-19.6 days) for the high-risk and 17.9 days (16.9-18.9 days) very high-risk category. CONCLUSION: Among patients admitted to ED for an episode of AHF, the MEESSI-AHF score estimates with good performance the number of days alive and out of the hospital.

The paradigm shift of information carriers from charge to spin has long been awaited in modern electronics. The invention of the spin-information transistor is expected to be an essential building block for the future development of spintronics. Here, a proof-of-concept experiment of a magnetic skyrmion transistor working at room temperature, which has never been demonstrated experimentally, is introduced. With the spatially uniform control of magnetic anisotropy, the shape and topology of a skyrmion when passing the controlled area can be maintained. The findings will open a new route toward the design and realization of skyrmion-based spintronic devices in the near future.

Acute pericarditis is the most common pericardial disease in clinical practice and frequently in young and middle-aged people. The past decade has dramatically increased electronic cigarettes or vapes in developing countries. However, there are no case reports describing vaping-induced acute pericarditis. This report describes a case of a 27-year-old male who presented with acute onset chest pain after using an electronic cigarette. His ECG showed typical pericarditis with diffuse ST-segment elevation and downsloping TP segment. The patient responded to the medical therapies of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and colchicine, but serum troponin T went up. In this case report, the authors have shared their opinions on how to handle this situation.

Morinda officinalis How is well-known as a valuable medicinal plant found in some regions of Vietnam. This species is mainly used for treating male impotence, irregular menstruation, and rheumatoid arthritis. This study aimed to identify the species of and genetic diversity in three M. officinalis populations: one each in Quang Binh (QB), Thua Thien Hue (TTH), and Quang Nam (QN). In this study, four DNA barcoding markers (ITS1, ITS2, matK, and rbcL) were used to identify the species and 22 microsatellite markers were applied for population structure and diversity analyses. The results showed that the sequences of gene regions studied in M. officinalis had a high similarity (>95%) to the ITS1, ITS2, matK, and rbcL sequences of M. officinalis on BLAST. Of the four DNA barcoding markers used, ITS1 and ITS2 showed higher efficiency in DNA amplification of M. officinalis. From this study, 27 GenBank codes were published on BLAST. The results also revealed high levels of genetic diversity in populations. The average observed and expected heterozygosity values were HO = 0.513 and HE = 0.612, respectively. The average FST value was 0.206. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed 70% variation within populations and 30% among populations. The population structure of M. officinalis inferred in STRUCTURE revealed that the optimum number of genetic groups for the admixture model was K = 2. These findings provided vital background information for future studies in the conservation of M. officinalis in both ex situ and in situ plans.

This study aimed to evaluate the nitrogen removal of a post-treatment system for natural rubber processing wastewater (NRPW) under low chemical oxygen demand to total nitrogen (COD/TN) ratios without any supplemental external carbon source. The system including a downflow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor and an upflow anaerobic reactor (UAR) was operated in two phases. In phase 1 (day 0-102), under a nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 0.23 ± 0.06 kgN m-3 d-1 and COD/TN ratio of 0.63 ± 0.47, the DHS-UAR system removed 82.5 ± 11.8% and 83.9 ± 7.6% of TN and ammonium concentrations, respectively. In phase 2 (day 103-229), higher COD/TN ratio of 1.96 ± 0.28 was applied to remove increasing NLRs. At the highest NLR of 0.51 kgN m-3 d-1, the system achieved TN and ammonium removal efficiencies of 93.2% and 93.7%, respectively. Nitrogen profiles and the 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing data suggested that ammonium, a major nitrogen compound in NRPW, was utilized by nitrifying and ammonium assimilation bacteria in DHS, then removed by heterotrophic denitrifying and anammox bacteria in the UAR. The predominance of Acinetobacter detected in both reactors suggested its essential role for the nitrogen conversion.

Background: Metabolic syndrome is one of the most common public health concerns in the 21st century. Several previous studies have shown an association between increased serum ferritin levels and other components of metabolic syndrome and the risk of metabolic syndrome. They conclude that ferritin can be viewed as a predictor of metabolic syndrome risk. This study investigates some main features of metabolic syndrome and the serum ferritin levels in a Vietnamese adult cohort with metabolic syndrome. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 207 patients who were treated at the General Internal Medicine-Geriatric Department, Hue Central Hospital, from May 2018 to August 2020. Patients were divided into two groups: the study group (104 patients with metabolic syndrome) and the control group (103 patients without metabolic syndrome and no serum ferritin-mediated disease). The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed by a joint interim statement of the International Diabetes Federation/American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute/World Heart Federation/International Atherosclerosis Society/International Association for the Study of Obesity in 2009. Results: Hypertriglyceridemia-hypertension-hyperglycemia (50.9%) is the most common combination of metabolic syndrome components. The mean serum ferritin concentration was 391.62±181.97ng/mL and 124.55±63.95ng/mL in the metabolic syndrome and control groups, respectively. In the metabolic syndrome group, increased ferritin concentration accounted for 86.54% for men, the mean serum ferritin concentration was 453.064 ± 161.75ng/mL (increased ferritin concentration accounted for 96.15%) for women; the mean serum ferritin concentration was 330.17 ± 181.71 ng/mL (increased ferritin concentration accounted for 86.54%). Conclusion: The serum ferritin level is significantly increased in Vietnamese patients with metabolic syndrome.

Today, in rural isolated areas or so-called 'medical deserts', access to diagnosis and care is very limited. With the current pandemic crisis, now even more than ever, telemedicine platforms are gradually more employed for remote medical assessment. Only a few are tailored to comprehensive teleneuropsychological assessment of older adults. Hence, our study focuses on evaluating the feasibility of performing a remote neuropsychological assessment of older adults suffering from a cognitive complaint. 50 participants (aged 55 and older) were recruited at the local hospital of Digne-les-Bains, France. A brief neuropsychological assessment including a short clinical interview and several validated neuropsychological tests was administered in two conditions, once by Teleneuropsychology (TNP) and once by Face-to-Face (FTF) in a crossover design. Acceptability and user experience was assessed through questionnaires. Results show high agreement in most tests between the FTF and TNP conditions. The TNP was overall well accepted by the participants. However, differences in test performances were observed, which urges the need to validate TNP tests with broader samples with normative data.

BACKGROUND: There are a host of emergent technologies with the potential to improve hospital care in low- and middle-income countries such as Vietnam. Wearable monitors and artificial intelligence-based decision support systems could be integrated with hospital-based digital health systems such as electronic health records (EHRs) to provide higher level care at a relatively low cost. However, the appropriate and sustainable application of these innovations in low- and middle-income countries requires an understanding of the local government's requirements and regulations such as technology specifications, cybersecurity, data-sharing protocols, and interoperability. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to explore the current state of digital health research and the policies that govern the adoption of digital health systems in Vietnamese hospitals. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using a modification of the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for academic publications, and ThÆ° Vien Pháp Luat, a proprietary database of Vietnamese government documents, and the Vietnam Electronic Health Administration website were searched for government documents. Google Scholar and Google Search were used for snowballing searches. The sources were assessed against predefined eligibility criteria through title, abstract, and full-text screening. Relevant information from the included sources was charted and summarized. The review process was primarily undertaken by one researcher and reviewed by another researcher during each step. RESULTS: In total, 11 academic publications and 20 government documents were included in this review. Among the academic studies, 5 reported engineering solutions for information systems in hospitals, 2 assessed readiness for EHR implementation, 1 tested physicians' performance before and after using clinical decision support software, 1 reported a national laboratory information management system, and 2 reviewed the health system's capability to implement eHealth and artificial intelligence. Of the 20 government documents, 19 were promulgated from 2013 to 2020. These regulations and guidance cover a wide range of digital health domains, including hospital information management systems, general and interoperability standards, cybersecurity in health organizations, conditions for the provision of health information technology (HIT), electronic health insurance claims, laboratory information systems, HIT maturity, digital health strategies, electronic medical records, EHRs, and eHealth architectural frameworks. CONCLUSIONS: Research about hospital-based digital health systems in Vietnam is very limited, particularly implementation studies. Government regulations and guidance for HIT in health care organizations have been released with increasing frequency since 2013, targeting a variety of information systems such as electronic medical records, EHRs, and laboratory information systems. In general, these policies were focused on the basic specifications and standards that digital health systems need to meet. More research is needed in the future to guide the implementation of digital health care systems in the Vietnam hospital setting.

BACKGROUND: Given the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, now more than ever, remote solutions for assessing and monitoring individuals with cognitive impairment are urgently needed. Older adults in particular, living in isolated rural areas or so-called 'medical deserts', are facing major difficulties in getting access to diagnosis and care. Telemedical approaches to assessments are promising and seem well accepted, reducing the burden of bringing patients to specialized clinics. However, many older adults are not yet adequately equipped to allow for proper implementation of this technology. A potential solution could be a mobile unit in the form of a van, equipped with the telemedical system which comes to the patients' home. The aim of this proof-of-concept study is to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of such mobile unit settings for remote cognitive testing. Methods and analysis: eight participants (aged between 69 and 86 years old) from the city of Digne-Les-Bains volunteered for this study. A basic neuropsychological assessment, including a short clinical interview, is administered in two conditions, by telemedicine in a mobile clinic (equipped van) at a participants' home and face to face in a specialized clinic. The administration procedure order is randomized, and the results are compared with each other. Acceptability and user experience are assessed among participants and clinicians in a qualitative and quantitative manner. Measurements of stress indicators were collected for comparison. RESULTS: The analysis revealed no significant differences in test results between the two administration procedures. Participants were, overall, very satisfied with the mobile clinic experience and found the use of the telemedical system relatively easy. CONCLUSION: A mobile unit equipped with a telemedical service could represent a solution for remote cognitive testing overcoming barriers in rural areas to access specialized diagnosis and care.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis using Sanger sequencing has been a routine practice for the identification of human skeletal remains. However, this process is usually challenging since DNA from the remains is highly degraded and at low concentration. Recently, the advent and implementation of massively parallel sequencing (MPS) have been offered the ability to improve mtDNA sequence data for forensic analysis. To assess the utility of the Ion S5™ system - an MPS platform for mtDNA analysis in challenging samples, we sequenced the mitochondrial control region of 52 age-old skeletal remains. Using the Precision ID mtDNA Control Region Panel, 50 full and two partial control region haplotypes at relatively high mean coverage of 2494 × were achieved for variant calling. Further variant analysis at 10% threshold for point heteroplasmy showed high degradation degree in terms of DNA damage in our bone samples. A higher point heteroplasmy threshold of 20% was required to diminish most of background noise caused by the damage. The results from this study indicated the potential application of the Ion S5™ system in sequencing degraded samples in Vietnam and provided valuable data sources for forensic analyses in the future.

Upon dysfunction of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), eukaryotic cells evoke the unfolded protein response (UPR), which, in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisaie cells, is promoted by the ER-located transmembrane endoribonuclease Ire1. When activated, Ire1 splices and matures the HAC1 mRNA which encodes a transcription-factor protein that is responsible for the gene induction of the UPR. Here we propose that this signaling pathway is also used in cellular adaptation upon diauxic shift, in which cells shift from fermentative phase (fast growth) to mitochondrial respiration phase (slower growth). Splicing of the HAC1 mRNA was induced upon diauxic shift of cells cultured in glucose-based media or in cells transferred from glucose-based medium to non-fermentable glycerol-based medium. Activation of Ire1 in this situation was not due to ER accumulation of unfolded proteins, and was mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are byproducts of aerobic respiration. Here we also show that the UPR induced by diauxic shift causes enlargement of the mitochondria, and thus contributes to cellular growth under non-fermentative conditions, in addition to transcriptional induction of the canonical UPR target genes, which includes those encoding ER-located molecular chaperones and protein-folding enzymes.

RESUMO

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-located protein Ire1 triggers the unfolded protein response against ER-stressing stimuli, which are categorized as ER accumulation of unfolded proteins or membrane lipid-related aberrancy. Here we demonstrate that by using yeast Ire1 mutants, we can distinguish the category to which a stress-inducing stimulus belongs. For instance, ethanol was found to activate Ire1 through both types of cellular damage.

RESUMO

An endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-located transmembrane protein, Ire1, triggers cytoprotective events upon ER stress. Chimeric yeast Ire1 carrying the luminal domain of the mammalian major Ire1 paralogue IRE1α is upregulated in ER-stressed yeast cells, but is poorly associated with the ER-located chaperone BiP even under non-stressed conditions. This observation contradicts the theory that BiP is the master regulator of IRE1α.
