Hierarchical linker thermolysis has been used to enhance the porosity of monolithic UiO-66-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing 30 wt% 2-aminoterephthalic acid (BDC-NH2) linker. In this multivariate (i.e. mixed-linker) MOF, the thermolabile BDC-NH2 linker decomposed at ∼350 °C, inducing mesopore formation. The nitrogen sorption of these monolithic MOFs was probed, and an increase in gas uptake of more than 200 cm3 g-1 was observed after activation by heating, together with an increase in pore volume and mean pore width, indicating the creation of mesopores. Water sorption studies were conducted on these monoliths to explore their performance in that context. Before heating, monoUiO-66-NH2-30%-B showed maximum water vapour uptake of 61.0 wt%, which exceeded that reported for either parent monolith, while the highly mesoporous monolith (monoUiO-66-NH2-30%-A) had a lower maximum water vapour uptake of 36.2 wt%. This work extends the idea of hierarchical linker thermolysis, which has been applied to powder MOFs, to monolithic MOFs for the first time and supports the theory that it can enhance pore sizes in these materials. It also demonstrates the importance of hydrophilic functional groups (in this case, NH2) for improving water uptake in materials.

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks exhibit great potential as materials for nanophotonic applications because of their programmable properties and tunable structures. In particular, luminescent guests (LG) can be hosted by metal-organic frameworks due to their porosity and guest confinement capacity, forming LG@MOF composite systems. However, such guest-host systems are mainly produced as loose powders, preventing their widespread use in practical devices and technological applications that require implementation of a stable continuum solid. In this regard, using monolithic MOF hosts might be a workable option to solve this challenge. Herein, we reported the facile synthesis and fabrication of novel prototypical sol-gel monolithic systems, designated as LG@monoMOF. Red (rhodamine B), blue (7-methoxycoumarin), and yellow (fluorescein) emitting dyes were encapsulated in a robust UiO-66 monolithic host, resulting in the red, blue, and yellow light-emitting luminescent monoliths. The mechanical and photophysical characterization of the three LG@monoMOF systems was systematically carried out in order to unravel the role of guest-host interactions in the mechanical and optical response of the bespoke LG@monoMOF composites.

On-demand uranium extraction from seawater (UES) can mitigate growing sustainable energy needs, while high salinity and low concentration hinder its recovery. A novel anionic metal-organic framework (iMOF-1A) is demonstrated adorned with rare Lewis basic pyrazinic sites as uranyl-specific nanotrap serving as robust ion exchange material for selective uranium extraction, rendering its intrinsic ionic characteristics to minimize leaching. Ionic adsorbents sequestrate 99.8% of the uranium in 120 mins (from 20,000 ppb to 24 ppb) and adsorb large amounts of 1336.8 mg g-1 and 625.6 mg g-1 from uranium-spiked deionized water and artificial seawater, respectively, with high distribution coefficient, Kd U ≥ 0.97 × 106  mL g-1 . The material offers a very high enrichment index of ≈5754 and it achieves the UES standard of 6.0 mg g-1 in 16 days, and harvests 9.42 mg g-1 in 30 days from natural seawater. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) studies quantify thermodynamic parameters, previously uncharted in uranium sorption experiments. Infrared nearfield nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR) and tip-force microscopy (TFM) enable chemical and mechanical elucidation of host-guest interaction at atomic level in sub-micron crystals revealing extant capture events throughout the crystal rather than surface solely. Comprehensive experimentally guided computational studies reveal ultrahigh-selectivity for uranium from seawater, marking mechanistic insight.

We report here the synthesis of polyureas from the dehydrogenative coupling of diamines and diformamides. The reaction is catalysed by a manganese pincer complex and releases H2 gas as the only by-product making the process atom-economic and sustainable. The reported method is greener in comparison to the current state-of-the-art production routes that involve diisocyanate and phosgene feedstock. We also report here the physical, morphological, and mechanical properties of synthesized polyureas. Based on our mechanistic studies, we suggest that the reaction proceeds via isocyanate intermediates formed by the manganese catalysed dehydrogenation of formamides.

Most of the current fluorescence sensing materials belong to the turn-off type, which make it hard to detect toxic substances such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) due to the lack of active chemical sites, thereby limiting their development and practical use. Herein, we show a guest-host mechanism stemming from the confined emitter's self-trapped exciton (STE) states or electron-phonon coupling to achieve turn-on fluorescence. We designed a luminescent guest@metal-organic framework (LG@MOF) composite material, termed perylene@MIL-68(In), and established its E-type excimeric emission properties in the solid state. Upon exposure to BTX, especially xylene, we show that the E-excimer readily converts into the Y-excimer due to nanoconfinement of the MOF structure. Such a transformation elevates the fluorescence intensity, thus realizing a turn-on type fluorescent sensor for detecting BTX solvents. Our results further demonstrate that controlling the STE states of perylene at room temperature (vs the previous report of <50 K) is possible via nanoscale confinement, paving the way to enabling turn-on type luminescent sensors for engineering practical applications.

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease with the destruction of small intestinal villi, which occurs in genetically predisposed individuals. At the present moment, a gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only way to restore the functionality of gut mucosa. However, there is an open debate on the effects of long-term supplementation through a GFD, because some authors report an unbalance in microbial taxa composition. METHODS: For microbiome analysis, fecal specimens were collected from 46 CD individuals in GFD for at least 2 years and 30 specimens from the healthy controls (HC). Data were analyzed using an ensemble of software packages: QIIME2, Coda-lasso, Clr-lasso, Selbal, PICRUSt2, ALDEx2, dissimilarity-overlap analysis, and dysbiosis detection tests. RESULTS: The adherence to GFD restored the alpha biodiversity of the gut microbiota in celiac people but microbial composition at beta diversity resulted as different to HC. The microbial composition of the CD subjects was decreased in a number of taxa, namely Bifidobacterium longum and several belonging to Lachnospiraceae family, whereas Bacteroides genus was found to be more abundant. Predicted metabolic pathways among the CD bacterial communities revealed an important role in tetrapyrrole biosynthesis. CONCLUSIONS: CD patients in GFD had a non-dysbiotic microbial composition for the crude alpha diversity metrics. We found significant differences in beta diversity, in certain taxon, and pathways between subjects with inactive CD in GFD and controls. Collectively, our data may suggest the development of new GFD products by modulating the gut microbiota through diet, supplements of vitamins, and the addition of specific prebiotics.

Gluten Friendly™ (GF) is a new gluten achieved through a physicochemical process applied to wheat kernels. The goal of this research was to assess the in vivo effects of Gluten Friendly™ bread on celiac gut mucosa and microbiota. In a double-blind placebo-controlled intervention study, 48 celiac disease (CD) patients were randomized into 3 groups to eat 100 g of bread daily, containing different doses (0; 3 g; 6 g) of GF for 12 weeks. The small-bowel morphology (VH/CrD), intraepithelial densities of CD3+, celiac serology, MUC2, CB1, gut permeability, proinflammatory cytokines, gluten in stools, symptoms, and gut microbial composition were assessed. All 48 CD subjects experienced no symptoms. K-means analysis evidenced celiac subjects clustering around unknown parameters independent of GF dosage: K1 35%; K2 30%; K3 35%. VH/CrD significantly decreased in K1 and K2. VH/CrD did not correlate with IEL increase in K2. 33-mer was not detected in 47% and 73% of patients in both K1 and K2, respectively. VH/CrD and IEL did not change significantly and strongly correlated with the absence of 33-mer in K3. Inflammation and VH/CrD decrease are strongly related with the presence of proinflammatory species at the baseline. A boost in probiotic, butyrate-producing genera, is strongly related with GF tolerance at the end of the trial. Our research suggests that a healthy and proinflammatory ecology could play a crucial role in the digestion and tolerance of the new gluten molecule in celiac subjects. However, GF can be completely digested by gut microbiota of CD subjects and shapes it toward gut homeostasis by boosting healthy butyrate-producing populations. BACKGROUND: Feline Mesenchymal Nasal Hamartoma (MNH) is a rare benign tumor-like lesion of the sinonasal tract affecting young cats. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the diagnostic significance of osteoblast-like (OB-L) and osteoclast-like cells (OC-L) in squash preparation cytology from endoscopic biopsies. METHODS: A 5-year database was retrospectively reviewed and included 109 cases of which 24 were diagnosed as MNH by histopathology. Slides were examined by two cytologists (one experienced and one inexperienced in nasal and squash cytology) in a double-blind study. The inexperienced cytologist counted OB-L and OC-L in 500 intact nucleated cells. The experienced cytologist assigned samples to four categories for OB-L (0, 1-5, 6-10, >10/field) and OC-L (0, 1-2, 3-5, >5/field). RESULTS: The presence of OB-L and OC-L was significantly associated (P < 0.001) with the histologic diagnosis of MNH. Receiver operating characteristic curves from the counts by the inexperienced cytologist revealed 3/500 OB-L and 2/500 OC-L as the best cut-offs for the diagnosis of MNH. Those of the experienced cytologist evaluation revealed that all the MNHs presented more than 10 OB-L/field and 3 or more OC-L/field. Both cytologists detected each cell type in all MNHs with an overall concordance of 0.93. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of OB-L and OC-L is a consistent finding in MNH, and thus, represents a reliable cytologic diagnostic criterion. The described methods are applicable in routine in-clinic laboratory settings and are easy to apply at any expertise level. Further prospective studies are needed to assess the accuracy of the proposed cut-off values.
