OBJECTIVES: In schizophrenia, nonspecific lighting likely causes sleep timing disturbances, leading to distress and poorer clinical status. However, the effect of exposure to circadian lighting on psychopathology outcome in schizophrenia remains unknown. Hence, this study aimed to develop such an intervention and investigate its impact on schizophrenia. METHODS: Twenty schizophrenia patients at a psychiatric nursing institute were monitored over 10 weeks, with assessments using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) conducted at baseline, weeks 3 (T1), 7 (T2), and 10 (T3). RESULTS: Circadian lighting significantly improved BPRS scores between T1-T2 (p < .05) and T1-T3 (p < .001), with affectivity scores also showing significant enhancements postintervention. Notably, female participants exhibited substantial improvements in BPRS scores from T1 to T3 (p < .01), while male participants demonstrated significant gains in MMSE scores from T1 to T2 (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Circadian lighting presents a promising intervention for improving psychiatric outcomes in schizophrenia, with distinct benefits observed across different psychopathological aspects and genders. These findings underscore the potential of lighting chronotherapy in psychiatric clinical practice and warrant further exploration in related research.

Self-management helps patients understand their illnesses and learn about disease-related skills so they can better manage their situation. However, published studies on the effectiveness of self-management for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are heterogeneous. Quasi-experimental design was used to investigate the effectiveness of a self-management program in self-care efficacy and quality of life in patients with COPD. Sixty participants who had experienced COPD were assigned to control group (usual care) or experimental group (self-care program) (1:1 ratio) according to a purposeful sampling at a Medical Center in Taiwan. The Medical Research Council dyspnea scale, the COPD Self-Efficacy Scale, the Clinical COPD Questionnaire were used to analyze data. The Medical Research Council dyspnea scale was more significant improvement in the 2 months after discharge in the experimental group than in the control group. The COPD Self-Efficacy Scale and Clinical COPD Questionnaire scores in the experimental group within 3 months after discharge were significantly improved compared with the control group. These findings demonstrate the application and initial effect of this self-management program.

A mycelial mattress of Rhizopus stolonifer obtained from a liquid static culture was utilized for wound dressing and biomedical use. Following screening of mutants induced by UV radiation, F6, exhibiting delayed sporangium formation was selected because its sporangium maturation exhibited a 5-day delay without significant loss of mycelial weight compared to the wild type. The sporangium-free mycelial mattress from the sporangiospore culture of F6 was treated with 1N sodium hydroxide NaOH at 85°C for 2 h to produce a sponge-like membrane named Rhizochitin. The trifluoroacetic acid hydrolysate of Rhizochitin contained 36% N-acetylglucosamine and 53% hexose respectively detected by the Elson-Morgen and phenol-sulfuric acid methods. Results indicated the wound area in rats covered with Rhizochitin was 40% less than that of the uncovered group. Rhizochitin decreased the expression of PDGF in the proliferation stage, increased the expression of TGF-ß in the inflammation and proliferation stages, and increased the expression of VEGF in the inflammation and proliferation stages. Rhizochitin inhibited secretion of matrix metalloproteinase-9 on days 1, 7, 9, and 12 and matrix metalloproteinase-2 on days 3, 7, 9, and 12. It was concluded that Rhizochitin has beneficial properties of biocompatible, biodegradable, and wound healing.

MCF-7 cells are extensively used as a cell model to investigate human breast tumors and the cellular mechanism of antitumor drugs such as doxorubicin (DOX), an anthracycline antitumor drug widely used in clinical chemotherapy. To understand the effects of DOX on the protein expression, we perform a comprehensive proteomics to survey global changes in proteins after DOX treatment in MCF-7 cells. Exposure of MCF-7 cells to 0.1 microM DOX for 2 days induced a differentiation-like phenotype with prominent perinuclear autocatalytic vacuoles, abundant filamentous material, and irregular microvilli at the cell surface. In this study, we also present a proteome reference map of MCF-7 cells with 21 identified protein spots via analysis of N-terminal sequencing, mass spectrometry, immunoblot and/or computer matching with protein database. Based on the proteome map, we found that DOX causes a markedly decrease in the levels of three isoforms of heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) whereas the levels of other stress associated proteins including HSP60, calreticulin, and protein disulfide isomerase were not significantly altered in DOX-treated MCF-7 cells. Taken together, we suggest that that action of DOX on breast tumor cells may be partly related to dysregulation of HSP27 expression. Modulation of HSP27 levels may be a clinically useful potential target for design of antitumor drugs and controlling breast tumor growth.
