RESUMO

Acetabular growth and development in the axial plane was evaluated by computed tomography (CT) scan. One hundred seventy normal hips of children ranging in age from 6 months to 17 years were evaluated for axial acetabular index, anterior and posterior center-edge angles (CEA), and acetabular anteversion. The acetabulum deepens and becomes increasingly spherical with time until the age of 13 years. Little further change in acetabular shape occurs once the triradiate cartilage closes. Closure ensues between the ages of 11 and 13 years, occurring slightly earlier in girls. Posterior bony coverage of the femoral head is greater than anterior coverage at all times. Acetabular anteversion showed little change as the acetabulum developed. Establishing normal values for axial development of the hip and acetabulum allows a better three-dimensional concept of the different pathologic conditions and aids in treatment planning.

RESUMO

Isolated dislocation of the radial head without fracture of the ulna is an uncommon injury. Though rare in children, it has been reported. A review of the world literature revealed only two reported cases in adolescents. This paper presents three previously unreported cases and reviews the mechanism of injury and problems associated with delayed treatment.

RESUMO

Three patients with epidural compression of the spinal cord, a rare but serious complication of type I Gaucher disease, are described. In two cases the compression occurred at the lower thoracic region due to collapse of T-11 and T-12, respectively. In the third case, an epidural mass developed at the dorsal aspect of the cord at T-2, and T-2 and T-3 showed diffuse infiltration without collapse. In two cases the diagnosis was made with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. In these cases MR imaging proved to be a safe, accurate method for demonstrating the nature and extent of disease within the spinal canal.

RESUMO

A new method of performing iliopsoas recession in patients with cerebral palsy is described. The approach to the tendon is made by means of a medial incision. The method has been used on seven hips, and the results are comparable to those obtained by a formal anterior approach.

RESUMO

We presented a synopsis of a young girl with congenitally deficient limb who underwent seven corrective surgical procedures and fabrication of a specially designed and constructed prosthesis. The surgical procedures are detailed as in the total rehabilitation approach. We have provided plastic laminated orthoses and prostheses to many patients with congenitally deficient upper and lower limbs. An additional paper will detail our experience with a series of plastic laminated orthoses and prostheses in patients with congentally deficient upper and lower extremities.
