BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are often complained by cancer patients and can last years after the end of therapies, leading to different negative consequences. Non-pharmacological strategies such as exercise interventions may be considered to counteract this phenomenon. The literature supports the beneficial effects of aerobic training (AT), while evidence on resistance training (RT) is scarce. Accordingly, our systematic review aims to investigate the potential novel effect of RT on sleep outcomes in cancer survivors. METHODS: The literature search was conducted on MEDLINE (Pubmed), Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases, including only randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The screening procedure was conducted using the web-based software COVIDENCE. Sleep outcomes assessed through self-reported questionnaires or objective sleep measurements were extracted from RCTs recruiting cancer survivors of any age and gender, on or off treatment. The risk of bias (RoB) for each study was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool for RCTs. Meta-analytic syntheses were performed on sleep quality and insomnia. RESULTS: A total of 21 studies were included in the review. Considering the mean percentage differences of all studies combined, promising positive results were found after combined aerobic and resistance exercise program (COMB) for sleep quality (-19%) and sleep disturbance (-17.3%). The meta-analysis results showed significant improvement for both sleep quality and insomnia (d = 0.28, SE: 0.11, Z = 2.51, p < 0.01, 95% CI: 0.07-0.49 and d = 0.43, SE: 0.20, Z = 2.18, p = 0.029, 95% CI: 0.07-0.49, respectively). CONCLUSION: RT interventions of 60 minutes per session, performed 2-3 times a week for 12 weeks, with exercise intensity ranging from 60% to 80% of one-repetition maximum can be administered to cancer survivors, aiming to improve sleep outcomes.

The rapid growth in digital technology usage among children and adolescents has highlighted the need for novel approaches to promote their physical and mental health. This paper investigates the viability of gamification-the application of game mechanics to non-gaming contexts-as a potent instrument for health promotion and mental health support. This conceptual systematic review seeks to examine the various published articles promoting children and adolescents' physical and mental health through gamified techniques. These interventions can provide an interactive and engaging platform for encouraging physical activity, promoting healthy nutrition, enhancing emotional regulation, and promoting mental health. The significance of this topic stems from the pervasive use of electronic games, beginning at a young age, which makes them popular educational tools. For the review to be systematic and reproducible, the PsycINFO, Scopus, PubMed, and Elsevier databases were searched and the PRISMA method was utilized for the analysis. After analyzing the research data, empirical studies assessing the use of gamification in promoting adolescents' physical and mental health are discussed. In conclusion, gamification has demonstrated promise for promoting children's and adolescents' physical and mental health. It improves motivation, commitment, and adherence to healthy behaviors. However, additional research is required to evaluate gamification interventions' long-term effectiveness and sustainability in promoting health behaviors among this population.

Removal of pathogenic viruses from water resources is critically important for sanitation and public health. Nanotechnology is a promising technology for virus inactivation. In this paper, the effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) anatase nanoparticles (NPs) on human adenovirus type 35 (HAdV-35) removal under static and dynamic (with agitation) batch conditions were comprehensively studied. Batch experiments were performed at room temperature (25 °C) with and without ambient light using three different initial virus concentrations. The virus inactivation experimental data were satisfactorily fitted with a pseudo-first-order expression with a time-dependent rate coefficient. The experimental results demonstrated that HAdV-35 sorption onto TiO2 NPs was favored with agitation under both ambient light and dark conditions. However, no distinct relationships between virus initial concentration and removal efficiency could be established from the experimental data.

RESUMO

Resistance training is now seen as a powerful tool to improve the health and functionality of cancer survivors. Literature shows that it can be implemented both during and after cancer treatment, with the intent of preserving muscle mass in the former and increasing muscle mass in the latter case. However, currently available data on this matter are predominantly derived from adult cancer survivors (ACS), and it is questionable whether the exact same raining regimen should be implemented in young cancer survivors (YCS) given the unique challenges they experience throughout their disease trajectory. Therefore, the goal of this work is to distill the existing evidence on resistance training (RT) interventions in ACS and facilitate discussion on whether the same patterns of RT can be applied in YCS.

Emulsion PCR-DGGE is a molecular biology technique used to amplify and analyze DNA fragments. This technique combines two processes, emulsion PCR and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), to enhance the specificity and yield of the amplification process and to separate the amplified fragments based on their melting behavior. In the emulsion PCR step, a high-quality DNA template is mixed with the PCR reagents and droplet generator oil to create an oil-in-water emulsion. The emulsion is then subjected to thermal cycling to amplify the target DNA fragments. The amplified fragments are recovered from the droplets and purified to remove any impurities that may interfere with downstream applications. In the DGGE step, the purified amplicon is loaded onto a DGGE apparatus, where the DNA fragments are separated and visualized based on their melting behavior. This method allows for the concurrent amplification and separation of multiple DNA fragments, thereby enhancing the resolution and sensitivity of the analysis. It is widely used in environmental and medical microbiology research, as well as in other fields that require the identification and characterization of microorganisms, such as the study of microbial diversity in soil, water, and other natural environments, as well as in the human gut microbiome and other medical samples.

Health inequalities within and between Member States of the European Union are widely recognized as a public health problem as they determine a significant share of potentially avoidable mortality and morbidity. After years of growing awareness and increasing action taken, a large gap still exists across Europe in terms of policy responses and governance. With the aim to contribute to achieve greater equity in health outcomes, in 2018 a new Joint Action, JAHEE, (Joint Action Health Equity Europe) was funded by the third EU Health Programme, with the main goal of strengthening cooperation between participating countries and of implementing concrete actions to reduce health inequalities. The partnership led by Italy counted 24 countries, conducting actions in five policy domains: monitoring, governance, healthy living environments, health systems and migration, following a three-step implementation approach. Firstly, specific Policy Frameworks for Action (PFA) collecting the available evidence on what practice should be done in each domain were developed. Second, different Country Assessments (CAs) were completed to check the country's adherence to the recommended practice in each domain. The gap between the expected policy response (PFA) and the present policy response (CA) guided the choice of concrete actions to be implemented in JAHEE, many of which are continuing even after the end of JA. Final recommendations based on the best results achieved during JAHEE were elaborated and agreed jointly with the representatives of the involved Ministries of Health. The JAHEE initiative represented an important opportunity for the participating countries to work jointly, and the results show that almost all have increased their level of action and strengthened their capacities to address health inequalities.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is considered the most common form of autoimmune arthritis. The disease's prevalence is around 0.5-1% worldwide, but it seems to vary among different populations. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of self-reported diagnosed RA in the general adult population in Greece. The data were derived from the Greek Health Examination Survey EMENO, a population-based survey performed between 2013 and 2016. Of the 6006 participants (response rate 72%), 5884 were eligible for this study. Prevalence estimates were calculated according to the study design. Prevalence of self-reported RA was estimated to be overall 0.5% (95% CI 0.4-0.7) being approximately three times higher in women than in men (0.7% vs 0.2%, p value = 0.004). A decrease in the prevalence of RA was observed in urban areas of the country. In contrast, higher disease rates were reported in individuals with lower socioeconomic status. Multivariable regression analysis showed that gender, age, and income were related to the occurrence of the disease. Osteoporosis and thyroid disease were the two comorbidities observed at statistically significant higher rates in individuals with self-reported RA. The prevalence of self-reported RA in Greece is similar to that reported in other European countries. Gender, age, and income are the main factors related to the disease's prevalence in Greece.

BACKGROUND: Greece was recently reclassified from low- to medium-risk country in terms of cardiovascular disease, with 27% of cardiovascular deaths attributed to hypercholesterolemia. EMENO nationwide survey (2013-2016) assessed the epidemiology of dyslipidemia in the general population in Greece. METHODS: A random sample of adults was drawn by multistage stratified random sampling based on 2011 census. Standardized questionnaires and blood tests for total cholesterol (TC), low-density (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides were used. Hypercholesterolemia was defined as TC ≥ 240/200 mg/dL and/or the use of lipid-lowering drugs, hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia as LDL-C ≥160/130/100 mg/dL and/or the use of drugs, hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia as HDL-C <40 mg/dL, and hypertriglyceridemia as triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL. Weighted analysis was applied to adjust for study design, age/sex distribution discrepancies between sample and population and nonresponse. RESULTS: Of 6,006 individuals recruited, 4,298 were analyzed (mean [SD] age 49.2 [18.5] years, men 48.5%, BMI 28.2 [5.7] kg/m2). Mean TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, and TG were 193.9 [44.4], 118.5 [37.6], 49.1 [14.9], and 130.8 [94.4] mg/dL, respectively. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was 27.6/52.4% for thresholds ≥240/200 mg/dL, and of hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia was 26.3/46.7/74% for thresholds ≥160/130/100 mg/dL, with no differences between sexes. The prevalence of hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia was 27.5% (men/women 38.1/17.5%, p < 0.001) and of hypertriglyceridemia was 27.8% (men/women 32.6/23.4%, p < 0.001). Lipid-lowering drugs were used by 14.1% of the participants (men/women 12.6/15.6%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: More than 50% of adults in Greece have some type of dyslipidemia (mainly TC ≥ 200 mg/dL) and 14% are treated. Nationwide programmes are needed to manage dyslipidemia and halt the increasing rate of cardiovascular disease in Greece.

Clusters of outbreaks or cases of legionellosis have been linked to fountains. The function of fountains, along with their inadequate design and poor sanitation, in combination with the warm Mediterranean climate, can favor the proliferation of Legionella in water systems. Public fountains in Mediterranean cities may pose a significant risk for public health due to the aerosolization of water. Nevertheless, few studies have been conducted on Legionella and the risk of infection in humans through fountains. In our study, the presence and quantity of Legionella spp. in fifteen external public fountains were investigated. Two samplings were performed in two different periods (dry and wet). Sixty samples were collected, quantified and analyzed with a culture ISO method. The operation of all fountains was evaluated twice using a standardized checklist. In accordance with their operation, a ranking factor (R factor) was suggested. Finally, based on these results, a quantitative microbial risk assessment was performed. Thirty water samples taken from the fountains (100%) during the dry sampling period were positive for Legionella (mean log concentration: 3.64 ± 0.45 cfu/L), whereas 24 water samples taken from the fountains during the wet period were Legionella-positive (mean log concentration: 2.36 ± 1.23 cfu/L). All fountains were classified as unsatisfactory according to the checklist for the evaluation of their function. A statistically significant correlation was found between Legionella concentration and the assessment score. The risk of Legionella infection was estimated in both periods, with higher risk in the dry period. The surveillance and risk assessment of Legionella spp. in the fountains of Patras confirmed a high prevalence and a high risk to public health.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies on hepatitis B (HBV), C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been conducted in Greece, little is known on the knowledge level of the Greek population towards these three infections. Our aim was to assess the knowledge level of the adult Greek general population about the HBV, HCV and HIV. METHODS: Data were derived from the first general population health survey, Hprolipsis. The sample was selected by multistage stratified random sampling. A standardized questionnaire was administered by trained interviewers during home visits. A knowledge score was constructed based on responses to 17 per infection selected items and categorized in three levels; high (12-17 correct replies) medium (6-11) and low (0-5). Among 8,341 eligible individuals, 6,006 were recruited (response rate: 72%) and 5,878 adults (≥ 18 years) were included in the analysis. The statistical analysis accounted for the study design. RESULTS: Only 30.4%, 21.6%, and 29.6% of the participants had a high overall knowledge level of HBV, HCV and HIV, respectively. These low percentages were mainly attributed to the high levels of misconception about transmission modes (65.9%, 67.2%, and 67.9%, respectively). Results showed that increasing age and living out of the big metropolitan cities were associated with decreased odds of having higher knowledge. Female gender, higher education level, higher monthly family income, higher medical risk score, history of testing and being born in Greece or Cyprus, were associated with increased odds of having higher knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: There are significant knowledge gaps in the Greek general population regarding modes of transmission, preventive measures and treatment availability for HBV, HCV and HIV. There is an urgent need for large scale but also localized awareness activities targeted to less privileged populations, to fill the gaps in knowledge and increase population engagement in preventive measures.

BACKGROUND: Nationwide data on thyroid disease prevalence in Greece is lacking. Using the national health examination survey EMENO data resources, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism and associated risk factors in adults living in Greece. METHODS: A random sample of the adults (≥18 years) living in Greece was drawn by multi-stage stratified random sampling based on the 2011 census. During home visits, trained interviewers administered a standardized questionnaire to study participants. All participants answered questions concerning demographic parameters (e.g., age, sex, degree of urbanization, income) and questions concerning smoking habits, alcohol, dietary habits and psychological parameters such as anxiety and thyroid disease. Weighted logistic regression models were fitted to assess factors associated with thyroid disease. RESULTS: In total, 6006 individuals were recruited in the Greek Health Examination Survey EMENO (response rate 72%) of whom 5981 were eligible for this study. The prevalence of thyroid disease was 9%, where 0.4% was related to hyperthyroidism and 8.6% to hypothyroidism. The prevalence of thyroid disease was higher in women (14.9%) than men (2.7%) (p<0.001). The highest rates of thyroid disease were observed in former iodine-deficient areas. A decrease in the prevalence of thyroidopathies with increasing alcohol consumption was found. Thyroid disease was associated with anxiety in men. Multivariable regression analysis showed that age, geographic area, and smoking were related to thyroid disease. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of thyroid disease in Greece is higher in women. Age, habits, and characteristics of geographic areas determine the distribution of thyroidopathies in Greece.

Hepatitis A (HAV) and Hepatitis E (HEV) considered to be major public health threats worldwide. Although, both infections are more common in developing countries, an increased number of HAV and HEV cases have been reported in developed countries. This systematic review analyzes epidemiological profiles of HAV and HEV in the Mediterranean countries. By using PRISMA guideline, we searched for articles from 2010 to 2020 referring HAV and HEV outbreaks from online databases: Scopus, PubMed and Springerlink. From 33265 unique publications initially captured, data was extracted from 101 articles investigating country and year of outbreak, transmission mode, vehicle of infection, mean age and sex of patients, symptoms reported, vaccination applied and diagnostic method. Our results indicate that occurrence of HAV and HEV in Mediterranean countries had increased with main transmission vehicle reported as food or water and transmission point as refugee camps. More results (countries, differences, other characteristics). Thus, public health authorities should give a priority to face up challenges regarding the prevalence of both viruses and control strategies to prevent upcoming outbreaks.

This study aimed to assess the reliability of opportunistic screening programs in estimating the prevalence, treatment, and control rate of hypertension in the general population. Two recent epidemiological surveys obtained data on hypertension in the adult general population in Greece. The EMENO (2013-2016) applied a multi-stage stratified random sampling method to collect nationwide data. The MMM (2019) collected data through opportunistic (voluntary) screening in five large cities. Hypertension was defined as blood pressure (BP) ≥ 140/90 mmHg (single occasion; average of 2nd-3rd measurement; electronic devices) and/or use of antihypertensive drugs. Data from a total of 10,426 adults were analyzed (EMENO 4,699; MMM 5,727). Mean age (SD) was 49.2 (18.6)/52.7 (16.6) years (EMENO/MMM, p < 0.001), men 48.6/46.5% (p < 0.05) and body mass index 28.2 (5.7)/27.1 (5.0) kg/m2 (p < 0.001). The prevalence of hypertension in ΕΜΕΝΟ/MMM was 39.6/41.6% (p < 0.05) and was higher in men (42.7/50.9%, p < 0.001) than in women (36.5/33.6%, p < 0.05). Among hypertensive subjects, unaware were 31.8/21.3% (EMENO/MMM, p < 0.001), aware untreated 2.7/5.6% (p < 0.001), treated uncontrolled 35.1/24.8% (p < 0.001), and treated controlled 30.5/48.3% (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the prevalence of hypertension was similar with random sampling (EMENO) and opportunistic screening (MMM). However, opportunistic screening underestimated the prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension and overestimated the rate of hypertension treatment and control. Thus, random sampling national epidemiological studies are necessary for assessing the epidemiology of hypertension. Screening programs are useful for increasing awareness of hypertension in the general population, yet the generalization of such findings should be interpreted with caution.

Bacteria are commonly found in soil and may cause health risks to children playing in the outdoor playgrounds with soil, mainly via hand to mouth and pica behaviors. Our study concerned with the risk analysis of infection of a child playing in urban playgrounds in the cities of Patras and Pyrgos in Greece. The presence of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were analyzed in soil samples of these playgrounds. A standardized questionnaire depicted the individual characteristics of each playground and recorded risk factors in playgrounds related to bacterial infections. Furthermore, the distributions of E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were analyzed in soil samples. Our results were investigated with beta-Poisson models using the Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment wiki models to evaluate and construct a probability model of infection for each of these bacteria. The risk of infection was higher during the wet period. The risk was higher for P. aeruginosa infection compared to E. coli and S. aureus ones. Nevertheless, the bacterial concentration was higher for E. coli than P. aeruginosa and S. aureus in both wet and dry periods. Our results provide new data that could contribute in assessing the risks associated with playgrounds where children can unaware play in urban parks.

Biosensors for sensitive and specific detection of foodborne and waterborne pathogens are particularly valued for their portability, usability, relatively low cost, and real-time or near real-time response. Their application is widespread in several domains, including environmental monitoring. The main limitation of currently developed biosensors is a lack of sensitivity and specificity in complex matrices. Due to increased interest in biosensor development, we conducted a systematic review, complying with the PRISMA guidelines, covering the period from January 2010 to December 2019. The review is focused on biosensor applications in the identification of foodborne and waterborne microorganisms based on research articles identified in the Pubmed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus search engines. Efforts are still in progress to overcome detection limitations and to provide a rapid detection system which will safeguard water and food quality. The use of biosensors is an essential tool with applicability in the evaluation and monitoring of the environment and food, with great impact in public health.

Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary) is in high demand in the food and drink industries due to its distinct organoleptic properties. With the aim of evaluating the rosemary leaves as drink ingredients, both the essential oil and alcoholic (38%, v/v) extract were studied in terms of chemical composition, genotoxicity, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. GC-MS analysis showed that the main volatile compounds in the essential oil were eucalyptol (40.1%), camphor (12.4%), and α-pinene (12.9%). LC-MS analysis revealed gallocatechin and rosmarinic acid as the main extract ingredients. Both the essential oil and the extract were not genotoxic (Ames test) against TA98 and TA100 at the dilutions of 5% and 90%, respectively; those dilutions were selected as the maximum possible ones in the drink industry. Their activity was investigated against Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus niger, and Adenovirus 35. Both were effective against Adenovirus and A. niger, even the essential oil at 5% (v/v). The extract at dilutions of 25-90% had more pronounced activity against tested bacteria than the essential oil at the dilutions of 5-100%; the essential oil at the dilution of 5% inhibited S. aureus growth. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay, the 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid decolorization assay, and the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. Both exhibited good antioxidant activity, but rosemary essential oil was far more effective than the extract. Our results demonstrate that rosemary essential oil and extract are safe and have beneficial biological properties. Therefore, they could serve as health-promoting ingredients in the drink industry.

Greek avgotaracho Mesolonghiou (fish eggs from Flathead Mullet) is a highly valuable food product which holds Protected Destination of Origin status. The aim of this work was to use PCR-DGGE technique to examine whether there is a correlation between bacteria population in fish eggs and geographical origin. Cluster analysis of fish eggs from three geographical locations (Mesolonghi, Australia and Mauritania) discriminated samples according to their provenance. Moreover, we utilized emulsion-PCR amplification in DGGE analysis in order to investigate whether we could obtain further information about food products' bacteria communities. PCR-DGGE proved to be a suitable method for fish eggs traceability, moreover emulsion PCR-DGGE provides better results. Emulsion-PCR can face up the existing limitations of conventional PCR and thus can be demonstrated as alternative molecular technique for complex and processed matrices, regarding food traceability and authentication.

INTRODUCTION: The EMENO (National Morbidity and Risk Factors) survey is one of the first and most representative population-based surveys in Greece due to its study design and sampling procedure. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of smoking, secondhand smoking (SHS) and their potential associations with other socioeconomic and unhealthy lifestyle risk factors. METHODS: EMENO is a cross-sectional health status survey conducted in Greece from May 2013 to June 2016. The survey was performed using face-to-face interviews and enrolled 6006 adults. Data were collected through questionnaires administered by trained interviewers. Current smoking (CS) and SHS were based on self-reporting. Analysis accounted for study design. RESULTS: Information on smoking was available for 5862 individuals (97.6%). Overall, 37.8% were current and 16.1% former smokers. More males (44.3%) than females (31.6%) were current smokers. CS increased during adulthood and declined sharply in the elderly (p<0.001). Smoking initiation by the age of 17 years was reported by 48.7% of males and 36.2% of females. Multivariable analysis showed that higher alcohol consumption (>7 glasses/ week, OR=2.52; 95% CI: 1.97-3.23) and lower education level in men were positively associated with ever smoking. Moreover, women aged >35 years and respondents with low adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) (high/ low, OR= 0.35; 95% CI: 0.21-0.58) had higher odds to be current smokers than former smokers. Finally, the overall prevalence of exposure to SHS at work, home and public places was 38.8%, 30% and 44.6 %, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Unhealthy lifestyles of smokers, increased rates of CS in vulnerable groups, such as females and young adults, and early age of smoking initiation constitute alarming public health issues in Greece.

In this study, non-targeted 1 H NMR fingerprinting was used in combination with multivariate statistical analyses for the classification of Greek currants based on their geographical origins (Aeghion, Nemea, Kalamata, Zante, and Amaliada). As classification techniques, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) were carried out. To elucidate different components according to PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), products from Aeghion (Vostizza) were statistically compared with each one of the four other regions. PLS-DA plots ensure that currants from Kalamata, Nemea, Zante, and Amaliada are well classified with respect to the PDO currants, according to differences observed in metabolites. Results suggest that composition differences in carbohydrates, amino, and organic acids of currants are sufficient to discriminate them in correlation to their geographical origin. In conclusion, currants metabolites which mostly contribute to classification performance of such discriminant analysis model present a suitable alternative technique for currants traceability. The study results contribute information to the currants' metabolite fingerprinting by NMR spectroscopy and their geographical origin. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study presents an analytical approach for a high nutritional value Greek PDO product, Vostizza currant. A further research and implementation of this method in food industry, can be the key to food fraud incidents. Thus, application of this work opens up posibilities to "farm to table" mission.
