RESUMO

This study characterized the effect of moderate- or vigorous-intensity exercise on leukocyte counts, using fingertip sampling, and mitogen-stimulated oxidative burst, measured in whole blood with a point-of-care test. In a randomized crossover design, 13 healthy adults (mean ± SD age: 22 ± 2 years; seven male, six female) cycled for 30-min, once at 52 ± 5% V˙ O2peak and on another occasion at 74 ± 9% V˙ O2peak . Blood was sampled at baseline, immediately post-exercise, and 15- and 60-min post-exercise. The leukocyte differential and mitogen-stimulated Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production were assessed. Lymphocytes increased immediately post-exercise and decreased below pre-exercise levels 15- and 60-min later. Lymphocyte mobilization immediately post-exercise was 59 ± 36% greater with vigorous- compared to moderate-intensity exercise (p < 0.01). Neutrophils increased immediately after exercise (38 ± 19%, p < 0.01) remaining elevated 60-min later (50 ± 34%, p < 0.01; averaged across intensities) and did not differ between intensities (p = 0.259). Mitogen-stimulated ROS production was amplified immediately (+32 ± 37%, p < 0.01) and 60-min post-exercise (+56 ± 57%, p < 0.01; averaged across intensities) compared to rest and did not differ with intensity (p = 0.739). Exercise-induced amplification of ROS production was abolished when correcting for neutrophil, monocyte and platelet counts and correlated most strongly with neutrophil mobilization immediately (r = 0.709, p < 0.01) and 60-min after vigorous exercise (r = 0.687, p < 0.01). Leukocyte kinetics can be assessed using fingertip blood sampling in exercise settings. Exercise-induced amplification of oxidative burst is detectable with a point-of-care test, but results are strongly influenced by neutrophil counts, which may not be routinely quantified.

RESUMO

A non-local model for dispersal with continuous time and space is carefully justified and discussed. The necessary mathematical background is developed and we point out some interesting and challenging problems. While the basic model is not new, a 'spread' parameter (effectively the width of the dispersal kernel) has been introduced along with a conventional rate paramter, and we compare their competitive advantages and disadvantages in a spatially heterogeneous environment. We show that, as in the case of reaction-diffusion models, for fixed spread slower rates of diffusion are always optimal. However, fixing the dispersal rate and varying the spread while assuming a constant cost of dispersal leads to more complicated results. For example, in a fairly general setting given two phenotypes with different, but small spread, the smaller spread is selected while in the case of large spread the larger spread is selected.

RESUMO

Birds arrive sequentially at their breeding ground where the nest sites vary in value (measured by reproductive success). Each bird may choose a vacant site or challenge an occupier for its site. In the latter case, the occupier is presumed to be the more-likely winner; the loser incurs a cost and must go to a vacant site. In a previous paper (Broom et al., 1997, J. theor. Biol.189, 257-272), we considered the optimal strategy. However, that optimal strategy was complex and perhaps could not be realized in real bird populations, making possibly costly demands both perceptually and at the coding level. With this in mind we introduce certain restricted classes of strategy, and consider how populations might evolve. Computer simulations of various populations have been performed to model the competition amongst several strategies in the presence of recurrent mutations. Certain combinations of strategies persisted and corresponded approximately to the ESSs found in Broom et al. (1997).

RESUMO

A group of individuals resolve their disputes by a knockout tournament. In each round of the tournament, the remaining contestants form pairs which compete, the winners progressing to the next round and the losers being eliminated. The payoff received depends upon how far the player has progressed and a cost is incurred only when it is defeated. We only consider strategies in which individuals are constrained to adopt a fixed play throughout the successive rounds. The case where individuals can vary their choice of behaviour from round to round will be treated elsewhere. The complexity of the system is investigated and illustrated both by special cases and numerical examples.

RESUMO

Measurement systems are used widely in manufacturing organisations in order to make many important decisions. These decisions range from the acceptability of a given product against tolerance requirements to the level of statistical control of a process or its capability to consistently perform a given task. In most situations, however, little thought is given to the quality of the data generated by such measurement processes. By using potentially flawed data in making fundamental manufacturing decisions, organisations undermine the quality of the decision-making process itself. This paper reviews the approaches presently available from both a technical and a practical point of view, based on the priorities of process improvement practitioners. The conclusion of the paper is that the Evaluation of the Measurement Process proposed by Wheeler and Lyday offers the best balance of accuracy and utility.

RESUMO

We examine models of sperm competition to determine which strategies are evolutionarily stable according to game theory. Games are considered in which the males of a species must divide a fixed amount of sperm between a fixed number of rounds in competition over fertilization of a given set of eggs. Sperm success with a single female is allocated using the raffle principle". A two round model is formulated and we show that the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) is a pure strategy in which a male should use at least half his sperm in the first round if given the opportunity to mate. The ESS is unique and globally stable, in contrast to most classical ESSs which are only locally stable. The model is extended to include the effects of sperm replenishment and egg oviposition between rounds. Both serve to increase the ESS amount of sperm inseminated in round one.

RESUMO

Two models are considered for the study of game dynamics in a spatial domain. Both models are continuous in space and time and give rise to reaction-diffusion equations. The spatial domain is homogeneous but the mobility of the individuals is allowed to depend upon the strategy. The models are analysed for spatial patterns (via a Turing instability) and also for the direction of the travelling wave that replaces one strategy by another. It is shown that the qualitative behaviour of the two models is quite different. When considering the existence of spatial patterns and deciding whether increased mobility is helpful or not, it is shown that the answers depend crucially upon the model equations. Since both models (in the absence of spatial variation) are quite standard, it is clear that considerable care has to be exercised in the formulation of spatial models and in their interpretation.

RESUMO

The effect of the GABAB agonist baclofen on cocaine self-administration in the rat was investigated. In the first experiment, rats trained to self-administer i.v. cocaine (1.5 mg/kg/inj) on a progressive ratio (PR) schedule were pretreated with various doses of baclofen (1.25, 2.5, or 5.0 mg/kg). Baclofen produced a dose-dependent decrease in the break points. In the second experiment, baclofen (2.5 mg/kg) was found to decrease significantly break points across a series of unit injection doses of cocaine (0.18, 0.37, 0.75, 1.5 mg/kg/inj). Baclofen produced only modest effects on food-reinforced responding even at the largest dose tested (5.0 mg/kg). These data suggest that baclofen may produce a specific attenuation of cocaine reinforcement. Baclofen produced no significant change in the rate of i.v. cocaine intake on a fixed ratio (FR 1) schedule. These data support a number of recent observations that rate of drug intake may be an insensitive measure of changes in the motivation to self-administer cocaine.
