RESUMO

The relaxor PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) has received attention due to its potential applications as a piezoelectric when doped with PbTiO3 (PT). Previous results have found that there are two phases existing in the system, one linked to the near-surface regions of the sample, the other in the bulk. However, the exact origin of these two phases is unclear. In this paper, depth dependant analysis results from negative muon implantation experiments are presented. It is shown that the Pb content is constant throughout all depths probed in the sample, but the Mg and Nb content changes in the near-surface region below 100 µm. At an implantation depth of 60 µm, it is found that there is a 25% increase in Mg content, with a simultaneous 5% decrease in Nb content in order to maintain charge neutrality. These results show that the previously observed skin effects in PMN are due to a change in concentration and unit cell.

RESUMO

The coupling between the tetragonal phase (T-phase) of BiFeO3 (BFO) and CoFe2O4 (CFO) in magnetoelectric heterostructures has been studied. Bilayers of CFO and BFO were deposited on (001) LaAlO3 single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. After 30 min of annealing, the CFO top layer exhibited a T-phase-like structure, developing a platform-like morphology with BFO. Magnetic hysteresis loops exhibited a strong thickness effect of the CFO layer on the coercive field, in particular along the out-of-plane direction. Magnetic force microscopy images revealed that the T-phase CFO platform contained multiple magnetic domains, which could be tuned by applying a tip bias. A combination of shape, strain, and exchange coupling effects are used to explain the observations.

RESUMO

The new generation of ternary Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 ferroelectric single crystals have potential applications in high power devices due to their surperior operational stability relative to the binary system. In this work, a reversible, large electric field induced strain of over 0.9% at room temperature, and in particular over 0.6% above 380 K was obtained. The polarization rotation path and the phase transition sequence of different compositions in these ternary systems have been determined with increasing electric field applied along [001] direction based on x-ray diffraction data. Thereafter, composition dependence of field-temperature phase diagrams were constructed, which provide compositional and thermal prospectus for the electromechanical properties. It was found the structural origin of the large stain, especially at higher temperature is the lattice parameters modulated by dual independent variables in composition of these ternary solid solution crystals.

RESUMO

Since the turn of the millennium, multi-phase magnetoelectric (ME) composites have been subject to attention and development, and giant ME effects have been found in laminate composites of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive layers. From an application perspective, the practical usefulness of a magnetic sensor is determined not only by the output signal of the sensor in response to an incident magnetic field, but also by the equivalent magnetic noise generated in the absence of such an incident field. Here, a short review of developments in equivalent magnetic noise reduction for ME sensors is presented. This review focuses on internal noise, the analysis of the noise contributions and a summary of noise reduction strategies. Furthermore, external vibration noise is also discussed. The review concludes with an outlook on future possibilities and scientific challenges in the field of ME magnetic sensors.

RESUMO

A differential structure which has the ability to reject external vibrational noise for Metglas/Pb(Zr,Ti)O(3) (PZT) fiber-based magnetoelectric (ME) heterostructures has been studied. This type of ME structure functions better than conventional sensors as a magnetic sensor when used in an environment in which vibrational isolation is impractical. Sensors fabricated with this differential mode structure can attenuate external vibrational noise by about 10 to 20 dB at different frequencies, while simultaneously having a doubled ME voltage coefficient. Interestingly, in addition to offering a means of mitigating vibrational noise, this ME structure offers the potential to be a hybrid sensor, separating magnetic and acoustical signals.

RESUMO

We report the finding of a monoclinic M(B) phase in Pb(Zn(13)Nb(23))O(3)-4.5%PbTiO(3) single crystals. High precision x-ray diffraction investigations of [110] field cooled crystals have shown a transformation sequence of cubic(C)-->tetragonal(T)-->orthorhombic(O)-->monoclinic(M(B)), which is different from that previously reported [A.-E. Renault et al., J. Appl. Phys. 97, 044105 (2005)]. Beginning in the zero-field-cooled condition at 383 K, a rhombohedral (R)-->M(B)-->O sequence was observed with increasing field. Coexisting M(B) and O phases were then found upon removal of field, which fully transformed to M(B) on cooling to room temperature.

RESUMO

Features of phase coexistence in polydomain 0.7Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-0.3PbTiO(3) crystals cooled under an applied [111] electric field E have been investigated. A sequence of ferroelectric phases as well as the elastic matching between coexisting phases in heterophase states has been analysed for cases where the angle between the spontaneous polarization vector of each domain type and the applied E vector remains equal in each ferroelectric phase. This analysis is based on a method that involves distortion matrices of the polydomain phases and invariants of interfaces regarded as quadric surfaces separating the phases. Results are represented in a system of diagrams linking domain states and interfaces at first-order phase transitions observed in [111] field-cooled 0.7Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-0.3PbTiO(3) crystals. A 'fine' structure of the domain state-interface diagrams related to tetragonal-orthorhombic phase coexistence has been revealed. It has been shown that conditions for complete stress relaxation in different heterophase states are achieved for a phase sequence of [Formula: see text] tetragonal [Formula: see text] near single-domain orthorhombic [Formula: see text] single-domain monoclinic of the B type.

RESUMO

Based on experimental observations of modulated magnetic patterns in a Co0.5Ni0.205Ga0.295 alloy, we propose a model to describe a (purely) magnetic tweed and a magnetoelastic tweed. The former arises above the Curie (or Néel) temperature due to magnetic disorder. The latter results from compositional fluctuations coupling to strain and then to magnetism through the magnetoelastic interaction above the structural transition temperature. We discuss the origin of purely magnetic and magnetoelastic precursor modulations and their experimental thermodynamic signatures.

RESUMO

We report on the coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic order parameters in a nanostructured BaTiO3-CoFe2O4 ferroelectromagnet. This facilitates the interconversion of energies stored in electric and magnetic fields and plays an important role in many devices, including transducers, field sensors, etc. Such nanostructures were deposited on single-crystal SrTiO3 (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition from a single Ba-Ti-Co-Fe-oxide target. The films are epitaxial in-plane as well as out-of-plane with self-assembled hexagonal arrays of CoFe2O4 nanopillars embedded in a BaTiO3 matrix. The CoFe2O4 nanopillars have uniform size and average spacing of 20 to 30 nanometers. Temperature-dependent magnetic measurements illustrate the coupling between the two order parameters, which is manifested as a change in magnetization at the ferroelectric Curie temperature. Thermodynamic analyses show that the magnetoelectric coupling in such a nanostructure can be understood on the basis of the strong elastic interactions between the two phases.

RESUMO

A theory is developed for intermediate monoclinic (FE(m)) phases near morphotropic phase boundaries in ferroelectrics of complex oxides. It is based on the conformal miniaturization of stress-accommodating tetragonal domains under the condition of low domain-wall energy density. The microdomain-averaged lattice parameters are determined and attributed to the parameters of an adaptive monoclinic phase. The theory is applied to the temperature, electric field, and compositional dependent FE(m) lattice parameters. The predictions of the theory are rigidly obeyed over the entire FE(m) stability range.

RESUMO

Enhancement of polarization and related properties in heteroepitaxially constrained thin films of the ferroelectromagnet, BiFeO3, is reported. Structure analysis indicates that the crystal structure of film is monoclinic in contrast to bulk, which is rhombohedral. The films display a room-temperature spontaneous polarization (50 to 60 microcoulombs per square centimeter) almost an order of magnitude higher than that of the bulk (6.1 microcoulombs per square centimeter). The observed enhancement is corroborated by first-principles calculations and found to originate from a high sensitivity of the polarization to small changes in lattice parameters. The films also exhibit enhanced thickness-dependent magnetism compared with the bulk. These enhanced and combined functional responses in thin film form present an opportunity to create and implement thin film devices that actively couple the magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters.

RESUMO

A crossover as a function of temperature is found in the zero-field aging properties of the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O3. Below a temperature near which nonlinear susceptibility has indicated a suspected phase transition, the time-frequency dependence shows simple scale-independent behavior resembling that for spin glasses. As in spin glasses, high temperature aging is stable as further aging occurs at lower temperature, but not vice versa, indicating hierarchical state arrangement. A more general interpretation of such effects is briefly discussed.
