A total of 366 individuals of Lutjanus argentiventris (Peters, 1869) were collected over a 5-yr period (October 2018 to June 2022) from Acapulco Bay, Mexico. Parasite communities in Lutjanus argentiventris were quantified and analyzed to determine the main factors that generate changes in species richness and/or species composition over time. The digeneans and copepods were the best-represented parasite groups. The parasite communities were characterized by a high numerical dominance of ectoparasites, mainly isopod larvae. Species richness at the component community level (9-23 species) was similar to the reported richness in other Lutjanus spp. The parasite communities of Lutjanus argentiventris exhibited high variability in species composition, suggesting that each parasite species may respond differently to environmental changes. However, the species richness and diversity were fairly stable over time; therefore, a clear pattern of interannual variation was not observed. Variations in the community structure probably were due to factors such as host traits (e.g., feeding behavior and body size), and possible interannual differences in environmental factors amplified by the occurrence of the anomalous event of La Niña.

Parasitological studies of long-term inter-annual variations provide more precise and reliable information about the biological structure of fish parasite communities, and constitute a reference data base for future studies. A total of 1103 blue sea catfish Ariopsis guatemalensis from a tropical eutrophic coastal lagoon were examined for parasites over a 22-year period (from May 2000 to October 2022), to test the hypothesis that parasite communities of this host, should exhibit greater variations in their structure and species composition mainly over long-term periods. Three species of monoxenous (single-host life cycle), and nine of heteroxenous (multi-host life cycle) parasites were identified. The results indicated that parasite species composition of this catfish has remained stable over a 22-years period. However, the community structure has registered notable changes over periods of several years, mainly due to the replacement of the numerically dominant species. Temporal variations in the infection dynamics of component parasite species, were possibly caused by a combination of biotic and abiotic factors, influenced by the seasonal dry/rainy cycle, which can affect the availability of intermediate host populations, as well as the feeding and reproductive behavior of the host.

During a study of the helminth parasites of carangid fish of the Gulf of Mexico, Protomicrocotyle mirabilis and a new member of that genus were found. The aim of the present study is to provide new morphological and sequences of 28s rDNA and CO1 mtDNA for P. mirabilis and describe the new species. Between 2005-2022, 73 specimens of Caranx spp. were purchased from local fishermen of the littoral waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Protomicrocotyle veracruzensis sp. nov. is most similar to P. mirabilis than to P. ivoriensis, the only members of the genus known from the Greater Atlantic Ocean Basin. Protomicrocotyle veracruzensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from those two species by the arrangement and number of testes. Measurement data on the haptoral armature for the new species is provided and the potential value and need for comparative data from these structures of other members of the genus is discussed. The results of the molecular analysis and the morphometric analysis of 91 characters confirmed that this new species belongs to Protomicrocotyle.

Strange oceanographic events such as El Niño and La Niña may have indirect effects on the local transmission processes of intestinal parasites due to the reduction or increase in populations of potential intermediate or definitive hosts. A total of 713 individuals of Lutjanus inermis (Peters) were collected over an 8-year period (October 2015 to July 2022) from Acapulco Bay, Mexico. Parasite communities in L. inermis were quantified and analysed to determine if they experienced interannual variations in species composition and structure as a result of local biotic and abiotic factors influenced by oceanographic events, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), or La Niña, the cool phase of the ENSO climate pattern. Twenty-six taxa of metazoan parasites were recovered and identified: two Monogenea, eight Digenea, two Acanthocephala, four Nematoda, one Cestoda, seven Copepoda, and two Isopoda. Species richness at the component community level (8 to 17 species) was similar to reported richness in other species of Lutjanus Bloch. Parasite communities of L. inermis exhibited high inter-annual variation in the abundance of component species of parasite. However, the species richness and diversity were fairly stable over time. Climatic episodes of El Niño and La Niña probably generated notable changes in the structure of local food webs, thus indirectly influencing the transmission rates of intestinal parasite species. Changes in species composition and community structure of parasites possibly were due to variations in feeding behaviour during the events and differences in the host body size.

Examination of the gill lamellae of the Panama grunt Rhencus panamensis (Steindachner) (Haemulidae), golden snapper Lutjanus inermis (Peters), and yellow snapper Lutjanus argentiventris (Peters) (Lutjanidae) (Perciformes) from the coast of the Guerrero State (eastern Tropical Pacific) of Mexico revealed 5 species of Monogenoidea: Euryhaliotrema disparum n. sp. on R. panamensis; Haliotrematoides uagroi n. sp. on L. inermis; and E. anecorhizion Kritsky & Mendoza-Franco, 2012, E. fastigatum (Zhukov, 1976) Kritsky & Boeger, 2002, and E. paracanthi (Zhukov, 1976) Kritsky & Boeger, 2002 on L. argentiventris. Specimens found on R. panamensis were assigned within Euryhaliotrema as a new species possessing the atypical morphology of the male copulatory organ (i.e., a coiled tube with clockwise rings). Haliotrematoides uagroi n. sp. differs from Haliotrematoides striatohamus (Zhukov, 1981) Mendoza-Franco, Reyes-Lizama & Gonzalez-Solis, 2009 from Haemulon spp. (Haemulidae) from the Caribbean Sea (Mexico) in having inner blades on the distal shafts of the ventral and dorsal anchors. The present paper represents the first finding of a species of Euryhaliotrema (E. disparum n. sp.) on a species of Rhencus and the second species on a haemulid host, and H. uagroi n. sp. as the first monogenoidean species described on L. inermis. Euryhaliotrema anecorhizion, E. fastigatum, and E. paracanthi on L. argentiventris in the Pacific coast of Mexico represent new geographical records.

Eight specimens of Urobatisjamaicensis were collected from four localities of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, of which four specimens were infected with cestodes of two new species of Acanthobothrium. Acanthobothriumgarciaprietoisp. nov. differs from congeners by a combination of characters including the size of the scolex and bothridia, length of the cephalic peduncle, length of the axial and abaxial prongs and total length of the abaxial prongs of the hooks, size of the cirrus sac and testes in mature proglottids, and the total number of proglottids. The most prominent characteristic distinguishing A.pulidofloresaesp. nov. from other species of the Atlantic Ocean/Caribbean Sea/Gulf of Mexico is the form of the scolex, which has the "clover leaf" configuration. In addition, it can be distinguished by the total length of the worm, total number of proglottids, small accessory suckers, the form of the bothridia, length of the axial and abaxial prongs and total abaxial prong length of hooks, and the number of testes. According to the current category scheme, A.garciaprietoisp. nov. and A.pulidofloresaesp. nov., belong to categories 1 and 5, respectively.

A total of 802 individuals of Lutjanus guttatus (Steindachner, 1869) specimens were collected over a 10-year period (August 2012 to February 2021) from four locations on the south-central Pacific coast of Mexico. Their parasite communities were quantified and analyzed to determine if they experience significant spatial and inter-annual variations. Thirty-two taxa of metazoan parasite were recovered and identified: four species of Digenea, four Monogenea, one Cestoda, two Acanthocephala, seven Nematoda, one Hirudinea, and nine of Crustacea (six Copepoda, and three Isopoda). Species richness was greatest among the digenean group, which represented 25% of the total species recovered, followed by the nematodes (22% of total species). Species richness at the component community level (10 to 20 species) was similar to reported richness in other Lutjanus spp. The component communities and infracommunities exhibited a similar pattern: low species richness and diversity, and dominance by a single species, mainly the monogenean Haliotrematoides guttati. Parasite community structure and species composition varied through the years, as well as between sampling locations. Variations were possibly caused by a combination of biotic and abiotic factors which generated notable changes in the infection levels of several component species. However, the similarity in the parasite species composition was high locally for short-term periods (one or two years). This result, therefore, suggests that parasite communities of L. guttatus may be more predictable locally, but only for short-term periods.

The parasite communities of predatory fish can be species rich and diverse, making them effective models for studying the factors influencing temporal and spatial variation in these communities. Over a ten-year period an initial study was done on the metazoan parasite communities of Scomberomorus sierra (Jordan et Starks) from four locations on the south-central Pacific coast of Mexico. Twenty-four metazoan parasite taxa were identified from 674 S. sierra specimens: three species of Monogenea, eight Digenea, one Cestoda, one Acanthocephala, four Nematoda, five Copepoda, and two Isopoda. The parasite communities were characterised by high ectoparasite species richness, with monogeneans and some didymozoid species being numerically dominant. Community structure and species composition varied between locations, seasons and sampling years. Similarity between the component parasite communities was generally low, despite the occurrence of a distinctive set of host-specialist parasites. Interannual or local variations in some biotic and abiotic environmental factors are possible causes of the observed variations in the structure and species composition of the parasite community of S. sierra. Ecological factors were therefore considered to have more influence than phylogenetic aspects (host phylogeny) on parasite community structure.

Introducción: Caranx vinctus es una especie importante en las pesquerías locales, utilizada como fuente de proteína para el consumo humano, sin embargo, su ecología trófica es poco conocida en las costas de Pacífico mexicano. Objetivo: Conocer los hábitos alimenticios de C. vinctus. Metodología: Se analizaron los contenidos estomacales de 268 ejemplares, capturados mediante el arte de pesca, chinchorro playero, en la sociedad cooperativa Playa las Hamacas, en la Bahía de Acapulco, Guerrero, México. Se aplicó el índice de importancia relativa específica de la presa (% PSIRI) para determinar las principales categorías alimenticias (ítems). La amplitud de la dieta se calculó utilizando el índice de Levin. Las posibles diferencias en la dieta por sexo, madurez sexual o temporada se identificaron a través del índice Morisita Horn y un análisis multivariado ANOSIM. Resultados: Los principales ítems fueron crustáceos representados principalmente por larvas megalopa de Portunoidae (16.51 %), Teleostei (12.7 %), materia orgánica no identificada (11.2 %), y Anchoa ischana (10.6 %) El índice de Levin indica baja amplitud del nicho trófico (Bi = 0.29) por lo que se le puede considerar como un depredador especialista con marcadas preferencias hacia algunos tipos alimentarios. El índice de Morisita Horn indicó que, se presentó un traslape entre las dietas por sexo (hembras y machos Cλ = 0.84), pero no entre madurez sexual (Juveniles y adultos Cλ = 0.56) y temporadas (Lluvias y secas Cλ = 0.03). Un análisis ANOSIM indicó que había diferencias significativas en la dieta de C. vinctus por sexo, madurez sexual y temporada. Conclusión: Se estableció que de manera general C. vinctus es una especie zooplantófaga e ictiófaga (Nivel Trófico = 3.39).


Abtract Introduction: Caranx vinctus is an important species in local fisheries, used as a source of protein for human consumption, however, its trophic ecology is little known on the Mexican Pacific coast. Objective: Know the feeding habits of C. vinctus. Methods: The stomach contents of 268 specimens, captured beach nets, in the Playa Las Hamacas cooperative society, in Acapulco Bay, Guerrero, Mexico, their food items were analyzed. The prey-specific index of relative importance (% PSIRI) was applied to determine the main food categories (breadth was calculated using Levin's index. Possible differences in the diet by sex, sexual maturity, or season were identified through Morisita Horn index and a multivariate ANOSIM analysis. Results: Crustaceans mainly represented by megalopa larvae of Portunoidae (16.51 %), Teleostei (12.7 %), unidentified organic matter (11.2 %), and Anchoa ischana (10.6 %) were the most important food items. The Levin index indicates low amplitude of the trophic niche (Bi = 0.29) so C. vinctus can be considered as a specialist predator with marked preferences towards some food items. The Morisita Horn index indicated that there was an overlap between sexes (females and males Cλ = 0.84), but not between sexual maturity (Juveniles and adults Cλ = 0.56) and seasons (Rainy and dry Cλ = 0.03). ANOSIM analysis indicated that there were significant differences in the diet of C. vinctus by sex, sexual maturity, and season. Conclusion: It was established that in general C. vinctus is a zoplantophage and ichthophagus species (Trophic Level = 3.39).

Current data on reproductive biology and population dynamics of the acanthocephalans are scarce mainly in regions from the tropical Pacific. An analysis was done to identify possible factors that influence variation in infection levels of the acanthocephalan Pseudoleptorhynchoides lamothei Salgado-Maldonado, 1976 in its final host, the blue sea catfish Ariopsis guatemalensis (Günther, 1864), and describe its main reproductive traits. A total of 1,094 A. guatemalensis were collected from Tres Palos Lagoon from August 2014 to December 2015. Prevalence of P. lamothei varied from 1.47% to 38.33%, and mean abundance from 0.03 to 4.44 helminths per examined host. In female P. lamothei relative fecundity increased with total length. Temporal variations in P. lamothei infection levels were attributed mainly to changes in host feeding and reproductive behaviour in response to local environmental factors as climatic season, and variations in water temperature.

Parasite communities in Caranx sexfasciatus were characterized and analyzed to determine any interannual variations in structure and/or species composition. In total, 422 C. sexfasciatus were collected from Acapulco Bay, Mexico, between May 2016 and March 2019. Thirty-two taxa of metazoan parasites were identified: five Monogenea, thirteen Digenea, one Acanthocephala, one Cestoda, three Nematoda, seven Copepoda, and two Isopoda. Monogeneans were the most frequent and abundant parasite species in all sampling years. Parasite species richness at the component community level varied significantly from 8 (May 2016) to 25 (March 2019) and was similar to previous reports for other species of Carangidae. The component communities and infracommunities in C. sexfasciatus were characterized by low parasite species numbers, low diversity, and dominance of a single species (the monogenean Neomicrocotyle pacifica). Parasite community structure and species composition varied between sampling years and climatic seasons. Seasonal or local fluctuations in some biotic and abiotic environmental factors probably explain these variations.


TITLE: Variation interannuelle des communautés de parasites métazoaires de la carangue à gros yeux Caranx sexfasciatus (Pisces, Carangidae). ABSTRACT: Les communautés de parasites de Caranx sexfasciatus ont été caractérisées et analysées afin de déterminer si elles connaissent des variations interannuelles dans la structure et/ou la composition des espèces. Au total, 422 C. sexfasciatus ont été collectés dans la baie d'Acapulco, au Mexique, entre mai 2016 et mars 2019. Trente-deux taxons de parasites métazoaires ont été identifiés : cinq Monogenea, treize Digenea, un Acanthocephala, un Cestoda, trois Nematoda, sept Copepoda et deux Isopoda. Les monogènes étaient les espèces de parasites les plus fréquentes et les plus abondantes au cours de toutes les années d'échantillonnage. La richesse en espèces de parasites au niveau de la communauté des composants variait considérablement de 8 (mai 2016) à 25 (mars 2019) et était similaire aux rapports précédents pour d'autres espèces de Carangidae. Les communautés et infracommunautés de C. sexfasciatus étaient caractérisées par un faible nombre d'espèces de parasites, une faible diversité et la dominance d'une seule espèce (le monogène Neomicrocotyle pacifica). La structure des communautés de parasites et la composition des espèces variaient entre les années d'échantillonnage et les saisons climatiques. Les fluctuations saisonnières ou locales de certains facteurs environnementaux biotiques et abiotiques expliquent probablement ces variations.

Introduction: Black skipjack, Euthynnus lineatus, and Pacific sierra, Scomberomorus sierra, are of great economic importance in the small-scale fishery of the Tropical Eastern Pacific and in particular in the study area. Objectives: The objectives of the present study were to assess the diet components of E. lineatus and S. sierra, as well as to evaluate the niche width, trophic level, and trophic overlap between the two species, by size and season. Methods: Biological samples were obtained weekly from small-scale fishery catches in Bahía de Acapulco, Mexico. The E. lineatus sampling period occurred from October 2016 to October 2017, whereas S. sierra was sampled from October 2016 to June 2018. The Prey-specific Index of Relative Importance (% PSIRI) was used to evaluate the importance of each prey item in the diet of the predator. Levin´s index (Bi) was used as a measure of niche width. The Morisita-Horn index was used to evaluate diet overlap by size (juveniles or adults), by season (dry or wet), and between the two species. The trophic level (TL) of predators was calculated using the Cortés´ method. Results: A total of 262 E. lineatus stomachs were analyzed (42 % were empty and 58 % contained food) and a total of 209 S. sierra stomachs were analyzed (74.6 % were empty and 25.3 % contained food). Of the total E. lineatus specimens sampled, 107 were juveniles and 155 were adults. Black skipjack juveniles fed on five food items and adults fed on 13 food items. Of the total S. sierra specimens sampled, 75 were juveniles and 134 were adults. Pacific sierra juveniles and adults fed on five food items. The diet of the two species comprised fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. The two species showed narrow niche width. The diet of juvenile and adult E. lineatus presented differences with growth, contrary to what was observed for juveniles and adults of S. sierra. There were no significant differences in diet by season for both species. The trophic overlap obtained between the two species was low. The trophic level calculated for both species indicated that are tertiary consumers. Conclusions: Black skipjack and Pacific sierra are tertiary predators and present a specialist behavior, feeding mainly on fish from the families Engraulidae and Clupeidae. Although a degree of similarity in the dietary food components of these species was observed, there was not a high degree of interspecific competition for food.


Introducción: El barrilete negro, Euthynnus lineatus, y la sierra del Pacífico, Scomberomorus sierra, son peces que presentan gran importancia económica en la pesca artesanal del Pacífico Tropical Oriental y de manera particular en el área de estudio. Objetivos: Los objetivos del presente trabajo son determinar los componentes alimentarios de la dieta de E. lineatus y S. sierra, así como determinar la amplitud del nicho, el nivel trófico y el traslape trófico entre ambas especies, por tallas y por temporada climática. Métodos: Las muestras biológicas se obtuvieron semanalmente de las capturas realizadas por las pesquerías de pequeña escala llevadas a cabo en la Bahía de Acapulco. El periodo de muestreo de E. lineatus se realizó desde octubre 2016 hasta octubre 2017, mientras que el de S. sierra de octubre 2016 hasta junio 2018. El Índice de Importancia Relativa Específica de la Presa (% PSIRI) se usó para evaluar la importancia de cada ítem presa en la dieta del depredador; el índice de Levin (Bi) se usó como una medida de la amplitud del nicho; el índice de Morisita-Horn se usó para evaluar el traslape entre las dietas por talla (juveniles y adultos), por temporada climática (seca y lluviosa) y entre las dos especies. El nivel trófico (TL) de los depredadores fue calculado usando el método de Cortés. Resultados: Se analizaron en total 262 estómagos de E. lineatus (42 % vacíos y 58 % con alimento) y 209 estómagos de S. sierra (74.6 % vacíos y 25.3 % con alimento). Del total de organismos muestreados de E. lineatus, 107 se consideraron organismos jóvenes y 155 adultos. Los jóvenes de barrilete se alimentaron de 5 ítems alimentarios y los adultos se alimentaron de 13. En el caso de S. sierra, 75 organismos se consideraron jóvenes y 134 adultos. Los jóvenes y adultos de sierra se alimentaron de cinco ítems alimentarios. La dieta de ambas especies se compone por peces, moluscos y crustáceos. Las dos especies presentaron una amplitud del nicho trófico estrecho. La dieta de jóvenes y adultos de E. lineatus presentó diferencias alimentarias de acuerdo con su crecimiento, contrario a lo observado entre jóvenes y adultos de S. sierra. Entre temporadas climáticas, la dieta no presentó variaciones significativas en ambas especies. Asimismo, el valor de traslape trófico obtenido entre ambas especies fue bajo. El nivel trófico determinado para ambas especies indicó que son consumidores terciarios. Conclusiones: El barrilete negro Euthynnus lineatus y la sierra del Pacifico Scomberomorus sierra son depredadores terciarios y presentan un comportamiento especialista, principalmente sobre peces de las familias Engraulidae y Clupeidae. Aunque se observó una similitud en los componentes alimentarios de estas especies, no existe un alto grado de competencia interespecífica por el alimento.

Based on the four criteria used for the identification of species of Acanthobothrium, A.soniae sp. nov. is a Category 2 species (less than 15 mm in total length with less than 50 proglottids, less than 80 testes, and with the ovary asymmetrical in shape). Acanthobothriumvidali sp. nov. is a Category 6 species (more than 15 mm in total length with more than 50 proglottids, fewer than 80 testes, and the ovary is asymmetrical). The new species differ from similar species from the Pacific Ocean by total length, the number of proglottids, diameter of the accessory sucker, the length of the cirrus sac, the number of testes per proglottid and the measurements of hooks. With the recognition of A.soniae sp. nov. and A.vidali sp. nov., 42 species of Acanthobothrium have been reported from the Pacific coast of the Americas. This is the first report of species of Acanthobothrium from a member of Narcine from Mexico and it brings the number of species reported from elasmobranchs from the Pacific Coast of Mexico to 13.

Interactions of holoplanktonic mollusks with symbionts and parasites are poorly known. We investigated the ecology of infection (prevalence, intensity, and abundance) in Firoloida desmarestia, caught during two sampling campaign sessions in 2012, off the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico (IMECOCAL, 83 stations) and a coastal research center near La Sorpresa Beach, Baja California Sur, in the Gulf of California (14 stations). Only females of F. desmarestia were parasitized. Hemiuroidea parthenita rediae infected 1% of F. desmarestia population at IMECOCAL, whereas young unencysted metacercariae stages of Opechona pyriformis (Lepocreadiidae) parasitized 6.6% of the same host species at La Sorpresa. Overall, finding of rediae and metacercariae represent new geographical and host records and shows that F. desmarestia has a dual host function in the life cycle of trematodes. As first intermediate host, F. desmarestia harbors hemiuroid rediae, functioning as the source of infection to other zooplanktonic groups by dispersing successive cercariae. As second intermediate hosts, it harbors infective unencysted metacercariae stages of O. pyriformis, which parasitize nektonic predators (fish), most likely through trophic interaction. Our results suggest that some trematodes are able to spend their entire life cycle infecting only pelagic hosts. Parasite-F. desmarestia interaction is shown in a conceptual model, where we propose that transmission of trematodes may occur between individuals of F. desmarestia within the same swarm. Relevance of F. desmarestia as a potential host in which life cycle abbreviation of trematodes may take place is discussed. This is the first quantitative study of helminth interaction on F. desmarestia in the Eastern Pacific.

Acanthobothrium marquesi n. sp. can be distinguished from A. tortum by length (26.1 cm vs. 10.6 cm), greater number of proglottids (1,549 vs. 656), a larger scolex (707 µm long by 872 µm wide vs. 699 µm long by 665 µm wide), larger bothridia (626 µm long by 274 µm wide vs. 563 µm long by 238 µm wide). This is the first report of a species of Acanthobothrium from the Mexican coast of the Gulf México.

Resumo O exame helmintológico do trato digestivo de nove espécimes de Aetobatus cf. narinari (arraia pintada) revelou a presença de uma nova espécie de cestódeo do gênero Acanthobothrium. As arraias foram coletadas de quatro locais no México: Laguna Términos, ao sul de Isla del Carmen e nas águas marinhas ao norte de Isla del Carmen e Champotón, no estado de Campeche, e Isla Holbox, estado de Quintana Roo. A nova espécie foi denominada Acanthobothrium marquesi, pertencente a uma espécie da categoria 3 (estrobilo longo, tendo mais de 50 proglotes, numerosos testículos, superiores a 80, e ovários assimetricamente lobados). Apenas outra espécie deste gênero, Acanthobothrium tortum pertence a categoria 3, no Oceano Atlântico Ocidental. Acanthobothrium marquesi n. sp. se distingue de A. tortum por ser mais longo (26,1 cm vs. 10,6 cm), possuir maior número de proglotes (1.549 vs. 656), ter um escolex maior (707 µm de comprimento por 872 µm de largura vs. 699 µm de comprimento por 666 µm de largura), e botridias maiores (626 µm de comprimento por 274 µm de largura vs. 563 µm de comprimento por 238 µm de largura). Este é o primeiro relato de uma espécie de Acanthobothrium do Golfo do México.

During August 2010, a total of 66 cane toad Rhinella marina were collected in Laguna de Coyuca, Guerrero, Mexico and examined for the presence of helminths. Ninety-two percent were parasitized by 1 or more parasite species. A total of 4624 individuals were found, belonging to 8 helminth taxa (1 digenean, 1 cestode and 6 nematodes). Infracommunities harbored by this host species are highly variable (mean Jaccard similarity index 0.31±0.27); mean percent similarity index 0.26±0.32) and depauperate (mean richness 1.91±0.92; mean abundance 64.4±100.34); almost 50% of them were dominated by Rhabdias fuelleborni, a skin-penetrating nematode. Differences related to host gender and size were found, since males registered infracommunities with lower species richness and diversity than females. The reproductive condition of females (collected during the breeding season) might explain the results obtained; during this season, females invest less in resistance to infection in favor of investing resources in reproduction. However, confirmation of this statement can only be made by sampling in the dry season, when the toads do not reach their reproductive peak.

: Infidum similis Travassos, 1916 (Dicrocoeliidae: Leipertrematinae) was found in the gall bladder of Leptophis diplotropis Günther, 1872 from El Podrido, Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. A phylogenetic analysis based on partial sequences of the 28S ribosomal RNA using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses was carried out to assess its phylogenetic position within suborder Xiphidiata, alongside members of the superfamilies Gorgoderoidea and Plagiorchoidea. The phylogenetic trees showed that the genus is most-closely related to the Plagiorchoidea rather than to the Gorgoderoidea, in keeping with previous taxonomic designations. Phylogenies obtained from ML and BI analysis of the 28S rDNA gene revealed a well supported clade in which Choledocystus hepaticus (Lutz, 1928) Sullivan, 1977 is sister to I. similis. On the other hand, a tree obtained using a partial sequence of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) mtDNA gene (ML and BI analysis), with species supposed to be closely related to I. similis according to 28S, does not support this relatedness. Based on the independence of Infidum from the subfamily Leipertrematinae Yamaguti, 1958 , our results clearly demonstrated that the genus corresponds to a different family and with species closely related to C. hepaticus within Plagiorchoidea. New data are presented about the tegumental surface of I. similis by scanning electron microscopy as well as the estimation of its haploid genome size using Feulgen Image Analysis Densitometry of sperm nuclei as part of the characterization of this species. This is the first genome size estimated for a member of Plagiorchiida, and these data will provide a new source of knowledge on helminth diversity and evolutionary studies. This constitutes the first host record, and new geographical distribution, for this species in Mexico.

Oswaldocruzia lamotheargumedoi n. sp., inhabiting the intestine of the cane toad, Rhinella marina (L.), in Laguna de Coyuca, Guerrero, México, is described here. The new species differs from 10 congeners infecting bufonid hosts because it has a type I bursa. In contrast, 7 of these species have type II bursa and 3 more a type III bursa. The species most similar to the species described herein is Oswaldocruzia pipiens Walton, 1929 . These 2 species share traits such as body size, bursa type, presence of cervical alae, and dorsal ray morphology. Nevertheless, both species can be distinguished based on the number of synlophe ridges at mid-body (54-56 for O. lamotheargumedoi vs. 45-48 for O. pipiens) and by the presence of a chitinous support in the long, and well developed, cervical alae of O. pipiens. In the new species, these structures are short, poorly developed, and lack chitinous support. Previous records of species of Oswaldocruzia in México include Oswaldocruzia subauricularis (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1917 in the Neotropical Realm and O. pipiens in the Nearctic.

The composition and species richness in helminth communities of two species of heron, Ardea alba and Nyctanassa violacea, in two coastal lagoons from Guerrero, Mexico were examined. Nineteen species of helminth (7,804 individuals) were identified in 43 adult birds: 15 digeneans, 1 acanthocephalan, 1 cestode, and 2 nematodes. Eight species co-occurred in herons of both species and lagoons. The prevalence values of seven species and the mean abundance of five species varied significantly between species of birds and between lagoons. The heterophyid, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa, was the helminth numerically dominant in the helminth community of A. alba in both lagoons, while the cestode, Parvitaenia cochlearii, dominated the community of N. violacea. At the component community level, species richness varied significantly: 10 species in A. alba from Coyuca to 16 in N. violacea (Tres Palos). All of the birds examined were infected with helminth parasites: three to seven species per host in A. alba from Coyuca, and two to eight species in A. alba and N. violacea from Tres Palos. The results indicate that even though species composition was similar between both species of heron, the structure of their communities was not the same. Differences in the feeding behavior of the birds (day/night habits), as well as local differences in the abundance of species of fish, and infection levels of helminths in each lagoon are suggested as being responsible for the variations registered in the structure of the helminth communities.
