RESUMO

The present study aimed at investigating nomophobia prevalence, thus, recurrence of anxiety without a smartphone, with preservice teachers in the Colleges of Education, Ghana. An actual sample of 345 preservice teachers responded to a 20-item questionnaire on nomophobia (NMP-Q). A one-way MANOVA between different groups statistics was applied in determining the differences in nomophobic behaviours among preservice teachers based on non-technology-related variables (gender, age, specialism, subjective economic status, sleep/rest hours, and religion) and technology-related variables (number of smartphones owned, smartphone ownership duration, active internet services, and daily internet usage time). The results evidenced that the vast majority of preservice teachers had mild to severe nomophobia, and their most significant anxiety was related to access to information and communication. Besides, non-technology-related variables in gender, sleep hours, and subjective economic status significantly impacted the preservice teachers' nomophobia. Technology-related variables that significantly influenced the nomophobic behaviour of preservice teachers included the number of smartphones owned, smartphone ownership duration, and active internet service. A sizable majority of the preservice teachers showed signs of mild to severe nomophobia. The present study provides prefatory support for the prevalence of nomophobia among the Ghanaian preservice teachers.

This study examined the prevalence of addictive Internet behavior and its links with mental health among pre-service teachers in Ghana. A descriptive, correlational design was employed with 405 pre-service teachers from colleges of education and a public university in Ghana participating in this study. The sample completed a sociodemographic survey about loneliness, life satisfaction, depression, self-esteem, and the Internet addiction scales (abridged form). The results revealed that there was a significant relationship between pre-service teachers' Internet addiction, depression, life satisfaction, and loneliness; however, depression was the least influential factor in addictive Internet use. Additionally, there was a statistically significant nexus between self-esteem, loneliness, depression, and life satisfaction. In addition, all the above-mentioned variables were discovered to explain 56.3% of the absolute variance in addiction to the Internet. Among the variables linked with Internet addiction and its dimensions, loneliness appeared to be the most significant. Institutional coping programs with Internet addiction should be established within the scope of the university administration, supporting pre-service teachers' mental health. Finally, the development of awareness campaigns on the menaces associated with Internet usage and mental health through extracurricular programs is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Our transition to an "information society" means that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become integral to our lives. ICT has also become an essential aspect of medical institutions and healthcare settings. Healthcare professionals, especially nurses are required to use ICT in their daily work. In Lebanon, however, due to political factors, many universities have not introduced technology or any form of ICT in their curricula. Institutions of higher education do use technology in various ways, however, successful incorporation of ICT in education requires acceptance by instructors who are expected to use ICT in teaching practices. Although international findings reveal that ICT should be used in nursing education, some faculty members experience difficulty integrating it. METHOD: A mixed methodological research approach was used to investigate the attitudes of nursing teaching staff toward the use of ICT in nursing education. RESULTS: Our findings revealed three categories of faculty with differing attitudes to the use of ICT in teaching and learning: pioneers, faculty members who have developed positive attitudes toward ICT usage; followers, faculty members with neutral attitudes; and resisters, faculty members with negative attitudes. CONCLUSIONS: Identification of the nursing faculty members' attitude toward ICT and the challenges faced by them contributes to the integration of ICT into nursing curricula and further development of educational practices.

INTRODUCTION: Valproic acid is a carboxylic acid derivative commonly prescribed for several types of seizure disorders or for acute manic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder. Several cases of valproate-induced pleural effusion have been reported, although the precise pathophysiological mechanism remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To describe the presentation of pleural effusion associated with valproate use and to categorize published case reports according to clinical, immunological, and pleural effusion cell type. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase databases were systematically searched from January 1970 until November 2020 using the following search terms: "valproic acid" OR "valproate" OR "pleural fluid" OR "exudative effusion" OR "transudative effusion" OR "valproic lung adverse events". These searches yielded 171 references of which 135 articles were considered irrelevant, leaving 36 potentially relevant references which were carefully scrutinized. Twenty-eight cases of valproate-induced pleural effusion were identified after excluding two articles reporting five patients with lung parenchymal adverse reactions to treatment with valproic acid; two articles reporting three patients in whom the pleural effusion could not be attributed to valproic acid alone; one case discussing valproate therapy and fungal pleural effusion; and one describing a patient who suffered from severe cardiac failure. There were also two cases, in an abstract form, with pericardial and pleural effusion, but without any further informative details, and, thus, they were also excluded from this survey. EXUDATIVE EOSINOPHILIC PLEURAL EFFUSION: This was the most common type of valproate-induced pleural effusion reported in 17 out of 28 cases (60.7%), with concurrent peripheral eosinophilia in ten. Acute hypersensitivity reaction, inflammation of the pleural cavity induced by the drug, drug toxicity, and damage to mesothelial cells due to oxidants, comprise the possible pivotal mechanisms. EXUDATIVE LYMPHOCYTIC PLEURAL EFFUSION: This was reported in two cases, with concurrent pericardial effusion in one. Discontinuation of valproate led to resolution of the effusion, although the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain abstruse. Interestingly, a patient presented with recurrent pleural effusion characterized by transition from eosinophilic to lymphocytic predominance after readministration of valproate. TRANSUDATIVE PLEURAL EFFUSION: Three out of 28 cases (10.7%) were characterized by neutrophilic transudative pleural effusion after long-term therapy with valproate, while concurrent pericardial effusion was also noted in two. VALPROATE-INDUCED LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS WITH PLEURAL EFFUSION: Five patients receiving valproate therapy (17.9% out of the 28 cases) developed drug-induced lupus erythematosus with concurrent pleural effusion that was eosinophilic in three. All patients had positive antinuclear antibodies; anti-histone antibodies were positive in two. CONCLUSIONS: Valproate-induced pleural effusion is rare, but patients receiving treatment with valproic acid who develop respiratory symptoms should be examined for valproate-induced pleural effusion.

There is an upsurge in the use of mobile phones among higher education students in Ghana, which may result in the nomophobia prevalence with the students. Therefore, the need to assess the influence of nomophobia within the student population in Ghana. This descriptive cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence of nomophobia and the sociodemographic variables, and the association with academic achievement of the understudied population. A self-reporting nomophobia questionnaire, composed of 20 dimensions, was answered by 670 university students to measure the nomophobia prevalence. Raw data were estimated using descriptive statistics, and one-way ANOVA and Independent T-test. While the findings showed diverse grades of nomophobia, statistical significance between academic achievement and the level of nomophobia was observed. This study concludes that there is a high nomophobia prevalence among university students in Ghana as the use of smartphones increases. However, follow-up studies should be conducted in Ghanaian universities to monitor nomophobia and its associates in order to reduce the adverse effects of habitual use of smartphones.

This study investigated the effects of a 10-month high-intensity interval-type neuromuscular training programme on musculoskeletal fitness in overweight and obese women. Forty-nine inactive females (36.4 ± 4.4 yrs) were randomly assigned to either a control (N = 21), a training (N = 14, 10 months) or a training-detraining group (N = 14, 5 months training followed by 5 months detraining). Training used progressive loaded fundamental movement patterns with prescribed work-to-rest intervals (1:2, 1:1, 2:1) in a circuit fashion (2-3 rounds). Muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, passive range of motion (PRoM), static balance, functional movement screen (FMS) and bone mass density (BMD) and content (BMC) were measured at pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. Ten months of training induced greater changes than the controls in (i) BMD (+1.9%, p < 0.001) and BMC (+1.5%, p = 0.023) ii) muscular strength (25%-53%, p = 0.001-0.005); iii) muscular endurance (103%-195%, p < 0.001); and iv) mobility (flexibility: 40%, p < 0.001; PRoM [24%-53%, p = 0.001-0.05;]; balance: 175%, p = 0.058; FMS: +58%, p < 0.001). The response rate to training was exceptionally high (86-100%). Five months of detraining reduced but not abolished training-induced adaptations. These results suggest that a hybrid-type exercise approach integrating endurance-based bodyweight drills with resistance-based alternative modes into a real-world gym setting may promote musculoskeletal fitness in overweight and obese women.
