RESUMO

In this study, a novel method that can detect carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and realize temperature immunity based on only one fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. The outstanding contribution lies in solving the temperature crosstalk issue of FBG and ensuring the accuracy of detection results under the condition of anti-temperature interference. To achieve immunity to temperature interference without changing the initial structure of FBG, the optical fiber cladding of FBG and adjacent optical fiber cladding at both ends of FBG are modified by a polymer coating. Moreover, a universal immune temperature demodulation algorithm is derived. The experimental results demonstrate that the temperature response sensitivity of the improved FBG is controlled within the range of 0.00407 nm/°C. Compared with the initial FBG (the temperature sensitivity of the initial FBG is 0.04 nm/°C), it decreases by nearly 10 times. Besides, the gas response sensitivity of FBG reaches 1.6 pm/ppm and has overwhelmingly ideal linearity. The detection error results manifest that the gas concentration error in 20 groups of data does not exceed 3.16 ppm. The final reproducibility research shows that the difference in detection sensitivity between the two sensors is 0.08 pm/ppm, and the relative error of linearity is 1.07%. In a word, the proposed method can accurately detect the concentration of CO2 gas and is efficiently immune to temperature interference. The sensor we proposed has the advantages of a simple production process, low cost, and satisfactory reproducibility. It also has the prospect of mass production.

RESUMO

We report on the observation of photoassociation resonances in ultracold collisions between ^{23}Na^{40}K molecules and ^{40}K atoms. We perform photoassociation in a long-wavelength optical dipole trap to form deeply bound triatomic molecules in electronically excited states. The atom-molecule Feshbach resonance is used to enhance the free-bound Franck-Condon overlap. The photoassociation into well-defined quantum states of excited triatomic molecules is identified by observing resonantly enhanced loss features. These loss features depend on the polarization of the photoassociation lasers, allowing us to assign rotational quantum numbers. The observation of ultracold atom-molecule photoassociation resonances paves the way toward preparing ground-state triatomic molecules, provides a new high-resolution spectroscopy technique for polyatomic molecules, and is also important to atom-molecule Feshbach resonances.

RESUMO

Benzodiazepines have sedative effects that cause reduced activity in users and may increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis. However, few studies have examined this potential risk of benzodiazepine use. This study examined the association between benzodiazepine use and the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in adults in Taiwan using a longitudinal health insurance database. The study population included 12,546 individuals with DVT and 50,184 matched controls. Results showed that benzodiazepine use was associated with an increased risk of DVT occurrence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.66; 95 % CI, 1.54-1.79; P <0.001), with a dose-response relationship. Patients with a higher defined daily dose had a higher risk of DVT, with ORs of 1.65-, 2.09-, and 2.16-fold higher for those with an average benzodiazepine dose of <0.5, 0.5-0.9, or ≥1 (DDD/day), respectively, compared to nonbenzodiazepine users. Stratification by age, sex, and follow-up duration yielded similar results. This study highlights the need to evaluate the association and benefits of benzodiazepine prescription to decrease the risk of DVT development.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the potential association between glaucoma and peripheral arterial occlusive disease. The study recruited patients, including 101,309 with glaucoma and 1,860,528 without a glaucoma diagnosis, from a population of 2 million patients in the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. Propensity score matching was performed between the two groups, matching for age, sex, and comorbidities. In total, 95,575 patients with glaucoma and 95,575 patients without glaucoma were analyzed for their risk of developing peripheral arterial occlusive disease. The analysis of the data revealed that the glaucoma group had a higher incidence density (ID = 4.13) of peripheral arterial occlusive disease than the non-glaucoma group (ID = 3.42). The relative risk for the glaucoma group was 1.21 (95% C.I. = 1.15-1.28). Cox proportional hazard model analysis indicated that the glaucoma group had a higher risk of developing peripheral arterial occlusive disease (HR = 1.18; 95% C.I. = 1.12-1.25). The subgroup analysis of the risk of PAOD showed that the glaucoma group had a higher risk of developing peripheral arterial occlusive disease in the age group of 20 to 39 (p for interaction = 0.002). In conclusion, patients with glaucoma were associated with a higher risk of subsequent peripheral arterial occlusive disease compared with those without a diagnosis of glaucoma.

RESUMO

Introduction: Psoriasis (PSO) is a chronic skin condition that affects a variety of disorders, especially the cardiovascular system. This study investigated the association between PSO and peripheral arterial disease (PAOD). Methods: A retrospective cohort study design was carried out between 2000 and 2018. The exposure subject was a newly diagnosed PSO. The diagnosis of PSO was never elaborated as a comparison subject. Balanced heterogeneity of the two groups was used by propensity score matching. The cumulative incidence of PAOD between the two groups was performed using Kaplan-Meier analysis. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to measure the risk of PAOD risk hazard ratio. Results: After matching the 1: 1 propensity score, 15,696 subjects with PSO and the same number of subjects without the diagnosis of PSO were recruited. The PSO subject had a higher risk of PAOD than the non-PSO subject (adjusted HR = 1.25; 95% CI = 1.03-1.50). In the 40-64-year-old subgroup, the subject of PSO exhibited an increased risk of PAOD than the subject without PSO. Conclusion: Psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of peripheral arterial disease and curative care is necessary to reduce the risk of PAOD..

RESUMO

Background and objectives: The objective of this study is to elucidate peripheral occlusion artery disease (PAOD) as a risk factor for cellulitis. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective population-based cohort study. The database is the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, which covers two million beneficiaries from the entire population of the 2010 registry for beneficiaries in Taiwan. The PAOD group is composed of patients who were newly diagnosed with PAOD from 2001 to 2014. The non-PAOD group is composed of patients who were never diagnosed with PAOD from 2001 to 2015. All patients were followed until the onset of cellulitis, death, or until the end of 2015. Results: Finally, 29,830 patients who were newly diagnosed with PAOD were included in the PAOD group, and 29,830 patients who were never diagnosed with PAOD were included in the non-PAOD group. The incidence densities (ID) of cellulitis were 26.05 (95% CI = 25.31-26.80) patients per 1000 person-years in the PAOD group and 49.10 (95% CI = 48.04-50.19) in the non-PAOD group. The PAOD group had an increased risk of cellulitis (adjusted HR = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.87-2.01) compared to the non-PAOD group. Conclusions: Patients with PAOD were associated with a higher risk of subsequent cellulitis compared to patients without PAOD.

RESUMO

Periodontitis (PD) is a common oral disease associated with various other diseases, particularly those affecting the cardiovascular system. This study explored whether peripheral artery occlusive disease (PAOD) is associated with PD and dental scaling. This study was a retrospective cohort study design from 2000 to 2018. The study population was newly diagnosed with periodontitis. The comparison group was defined as never diagnosed with periodontitis. The outcome variable was defined with the diagnosis of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). The propensity score matching was performed by age, sex, comorbidities, and dental scaling between the two groups. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to calculate the cumulative incidence of PAOD among the two groups. To perform the independent risk of the PAOD group, the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate the hazard ratios. First, 792,681 patients with PD and 458,521 patients with no history of PD were selected from Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, which comprises the data of two million beneficiaries. After propensity score matching between the PD and non-PD groups for age, sex, comorbidities, and dental scaling, 357,106 patients in each group were analyzed for PAOD risk. The incidence density, relative risk, and cumulative incidence of PAOD were higher in the PD group than in the non-PD group. After adjusting for all variables, the risk of PAOD for the PD group was greater than for the non-PD group (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06). Undergoing at least one dental scaling procedure reduced the risk of PAOD. Age over 65 years was also a risk factor. In conclusion, patients with PD have an increased risk of PAOD. In addition, our results can lead to increased attention to oral hygiene, as dental scaling has a trend towards a lower risk of PAOD.

RESUMO

Although cesarean section (CS) has become a common method of child delivery in recent decades, the choice between general anesthesia (GA) and neuraxial anesthesia (NA) for CS must be carefully considered. Depending on the type of anesthesia used in CS, a major outcome observed is the occurrence of postpartum depression (PPD). This study investigated the association between PPD risk and the anesthesia method used in CS by using data from three linked nationwide databases in Taiwan, namely, the National Health Insurance Research Database, the National Birth Reporting Database, and the National Death Index Database. After propensity score matching by baseline depressive disorders, maternal demographics, status at delivery, infant's health, maternal diseases during pregnancy, and age of partner, we included women who had natural births (n = 15,706), cesarean sections with GA (n = 15,706), and cesarean sections with NA (n = 15,706). A conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of PPDs, including depression, sleep disorder, and medication with hypnotics or antidepressants, under anesthesia during CS. The prevalence rates of combined PPDs were 26.66%, 43.87%, and 36.30% in natural births, CS with GA, and CS with NA, respectively. In particular, the proportions of postpartum use of hypnotic drugs or antidepressants were 21.70%, 39.77%, and 31.84%, which were significantly different. The aORs (95% CIs) were 2.15 (2.05-2.25) for the included depressive disorders, 1.10 (1.00-1.21) for depression, 1.03 (0.96-1.11) for sleep disorder, and 2.38 (2.27-2.50) for medication with hypnotics or antidepressants in CS with GA compared with natural births. Women who underwent CS with GA had a significantly higher risk of depressive disorders and a higher need for antidepressants for sleep problems than those who underwent CS with NA. The risks of PPD were significantly associated with the anesthesia method, especially GA. Our results can assist physicians in carefully considering the appropriate anesthesia method for CS delivery, particularly with regard to postpartum drug abuse and drug safety.

RESUMO

Peripheral artery occlusive disease (PAOD) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can cause a variety of acute and chronic vascular complications and put patients at risk of subsequent sepsis. This study aimed to determine whether DVT compared with PAOD patients would increase the risk of sepsis. This study recruited 43,535 patients newly diagnosed as having PAOD and 6932 patients who were newly diagnosed as having DVT from a population of 2 million patients from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. Propensity score matching (PSM) between the PAOD and DVT groups was performed for age, sex, comorbidities, and prior antibiotic administration. A total of 4383 patients with PAOD and 4383 patients with DVT were analyzed for risk of sepsis. The incidence density of sepsis per 1000 person years for patients with PAOD was 25.75 (95% CI = 23.90 to 27.74) and 35.61 (95% CI = 33.29 to 38.09) for patients with DVT. After age, sex, associated comorbidities, and antibiotic administration were adjusted for, the risk of sepsis for the DVT group was 1.46-fold (95% CI = 1.32-1.62) higher than that for the PAOD group. In conclusion, patients with DVT were associated with a higher risk of subsequent sepsis than patients with PAOD. Aging was another risk factor.

RESUMO

This study aims to analyze the research on the prevention and treatment of cerebral small vessel diseases(CSVDs) with traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) based on knowledge map, and to preliminarily explore the research hotspots and trends. To be specific, articles on TCM treatment of CSVDs in CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP(from establishment to November 2021) were retrieved, followed by bibliometric analysis. Then CiteSpace 5.7 R4 and Gephi were employed for generation of maps on annual number of articles, author cooperation, institution cooperation, keyword co-occurrence, keyword clustering, and keyword emergence. A total of 106 eligible articles were screened out, and the annual number of articles presented a steady upward trend. A total of 277 authors were included in the author cooperation network, among whom CHEN Zhigang published the most articles. A total of 87 institutions were included in the institution cooperation network, among which Dongfang Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine showed the most frequent cooperation with other institutions. Keyword clustering showed that research on the TCM treatment of CSVDs mainly focused on five aspects: related disease research, neurological function deficits, disease nature and location in TCM, TCM treatment methods, and formulas. The prevention and treatment of CSVDs with TCM in China has been developing steadily in the past ten years, and TCM has unique advantages in the prevention and treatment of this disease. The knowledge maps vividly demonstrated the development and research hotspots and trends in this field. The result is expected to provide a reference for further research in this field.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown an association between CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥ 75 years, diabetes mellitus, stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), vascular disease, age 65 to 74 years, sex category) score and outcome of acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and chest pain. As pneumonia can affect the cardiovascular system, this study aimed to investigate the performance of the CHA2DS2-VASc score for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) risk stratification in patients with pneumonia. METHODS: A retrospective population-based cohort study including 61,843 patients with pneumonia. These patients were divided into two cohorts that were stratified based on the presence or absence of underlying atrial fibrillation (AF). We calculated the CHA2DS2-VASc score and incidence density rates of MACEs in each cohort. Cox regression was conducted to calculate hazard ratio of MACEs in pneumonia patients. The diagnostic performance of CHA2DS2-VASc with regard to MACEs was tested using the receiver operator characteristic curve. RESULTS: Pneumonia patients with higher CHA2DS2-VASc score were more likely develop MACEs in both the AF and non-AF groups. In the AF group, the areas under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity were 0.824 (0.7773-0.8708), 0.7, and 0.84 respectively. In the non-AF group, the AUC, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.8185 (0.8152-0.8217), 0.75, and 0.83 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The CHA2DS2-VASc score showed good performance in the prediction of MACE in patients with pneumonia.

RESUMO

Deep vein thrombosis causes several acute and chronic vessel complications and puts patients at risk of subsequent sepsis development. This unique study aimed to estimate the risk of sepsis development in DVT patients compared with non-DVT patients. This population-based cohort study used records of a longitudinal health insurance database containing two million patients defined in Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Our study included patients aged over 20 years with a new diagnosis of DVT with at least two outpatient department visits or an admission between 2001 and 2014. Patients with a diagnosis of sepsis before the index date were excluded. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to homogenize the baseline characteristics between the two groups. To define the independent risk of the DVT group, a multivariate Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate the hazard ratios. After PSM, the DVT group (n = 5753) exhibited a higher risk of sepsis (adjusted hazard ratio, aHR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.59-1.90) compared with non-DVT group (n = 5753). Patients with an increased risk of sepsis were associated with being elderly aged, male, having diabetes, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, malignancy, and use of antibiotics. In conclusion, this population-based cohort study demonstrated an increased risk of sepsis in DVT patients compared with non-DVT patients. Thus, early prevention and adequate treatment of DVT is necessary in clinical practice.

RESUMO

As a persistent organic pollutant, pentachlorophenol (PCP) has serious impacts on human health. However, its presence in animal source food products sold in the Guangdong Province (GD) of China, and the resultant dietary exposure have not been elucidated. To address this gap, 3,100 samples from seven food categories, including beef, pork, mutton, offals, broilers, hen eggs, and farmed freshwater fish, marketed throughout four geographical regions of GD, were collected from 2015 to 2018. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was employed to detect PCP levels in these food matrices. PCP was found in all food categories, but the average contamination levels were low, ranging from 0.40 µg/kg wet weight (ww) (hen eggs) to 5.85 µg/kg ww (offals). However, higher concentrations of PCP were detected (P < 0.05) in animal source food from the North region. Additionally, a temporal declining trend was observed in this four-year consecutive survey. The estimated human dietary exposure of PCP to population groups, including the general population and subgroups (male and female, children, and adults), was found to be far below the permissible daily intake (3 µg/kg body weight). Therefore, the health impacts of PCP should be correspondingly low for local residents, based on current toxicological knowledge. Regional exposure patterns varied due to different extents of contamination in the four areas, and pork, broilers, and freshwater fish were the major sources of dietary PCP exposure. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: As a persistent organic pollutant, pentachlorophenol (PCP) has serious impacts on human health. However, its presence in animal source food products sold in Guangdong Province of China, and the resultant dietary exposure have not been elucidated. In this study, we conducted an in-depth investigation on the occurrence of PCP in major foodstuff categories, including beef, pork, mutton, broilers, offals, hen eggs, and farmed freshwater fish, marketed in all 21 prefecture-level divisions of Guangdong Province, in order to provide integral insights for regulatory authorities.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the associations between domestic pets and respiratory health in children. METHODS: We randomly recruited 11,611 school children from Zhongshan, a southern city in China. Information about the respiratory symptoms and disease history of the recruited children, the status of domestic pets, and other related risk factors were collected from March to July 2016. RESULTS: We identified cat-keeping at home increases the risk of persistent cough (OR, 1.77; 95%CI, 1.03-3.05); poultry-keeping at home increases the risk of current asthma (OR, 3.87; 95%CI, 1.08-13.92) and allergic rhinitis (OR, 1.84; 95%CI, 1.01-3.37); sleeping with pets increases the risk of persistent phlegm (OR, 5.04; 95%CI, 1.05-24.28), doctor-diagnosed asthma (OR, 3.35; 95%CI, 1.31-8.57) and current asthma (OR, 4.94; 95%CI, 1.05-23.31) in children. CONCLUSIONS: Cat-keeping and molds on the wall of the house had the multiplicative and additive interaction in doctor-diagnosed asthma. In conclusion, pet-keeping increased the risk of respiratory symptoms in children.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantitatively summarize the evidence for VDR BsmI gene polymorphism and osteoporosis risk in postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, Weipu, CNKI, and Wanfang databases were searched for eligible studies. Case-control studies containing available genotype frequencies of B/b were chosen, and odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to assess the strength of this association. RESULTS: 4485 osteoporosis and 5490 controls were identified in our meta-analysis. In the stratified analysis, a significant association was observed between VDR BsmI gene polymorphism and osteoporosis susceptibility in Caucasians (additive model: OR = 0.809, 95% CI 0.678~0.965, p = 0.019; recessive model: OR = 0.736, 95% CI 0.568~0.955, p = 0.021; and co-dominant model: bb vs. BB OR = 0.701, 95% CI 0.511~0.962 p = 0.028), and we failed to find any significant relationship in Asians. CONCLUSION: The present meta-analysis suggests that VDR BsmI genotype is associated with increased risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis in Caucasians but not in Asians. To draw comprehensive and true conclusions, further prospective studies with larger numbers of participants worldwide are needed to examine associations between VDR BsmI polymorphism and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

RESUMO

Oxidative stress and subsequent cardiac myocyte apoptosis play central roles in the initiation and progression of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Homeobox transcript antisense intergenic RNA (Hotair) was previously implicated in various heart diseases, yet its role in myocardial I/R injury has not been clearly demonstrated. Mice with cardiac-restricted knockdown or overexpression of Hotair were exposed to I/R surgery. H9c2 cells were cultured and subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) stimulation to further verify the role and underlying mechanisms of Hotair in vitro. Histological examination, molecular detection, and functional parameters were determined in vivo and in vitro. In response to I/R or H/R treatment, Hotair expression was increased in a bromodomain-containing protein 4-dependent manner. Cardiac-restricted knockdown of Hotair exacerbated, whereas Hotair overexpression prevented I/R-induced oxidative stress, cardiac myocyte apoptosis, and cardiac dysfunction. Mechanistically, we observed that Hotair exerted its beneficial effects via activating AMP-activated protein kinase alpha (AMPKα). Further detection revealed that Hotair activated AMPKα through regulating the enhancer of zeste homolog 2/microRNA-451/calcium-binding protein 39 (EZH2/miR-451/Cab39) axis. We provide the evidence that endogenous lncRNA Hotair is an essential negative regulator for oxidative stress and cardiac myocyte apoptosis in myocardial I/R injury, which is dependent on AMPKα activation via the EZH2/miR-451/Cab39 axis.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Anxiety is a mediator for emotional reactivity and acute blood pressure elevations, which are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular death. Alprazolam is a common medication for anxiolysis. We hypothesized that alprazolam usage can reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with hypertension. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using datasets from Taiwanese Health and Welfare Data. Patients with hypertension were divided into exposed (Alprazolam-exposed) and control groups (non-Alprazolam-exposed) with 1:1 propensity score matching. The study endpoint was the occurrence of MACE. Adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of MACE risk was estimated using the multiple Cox proportional hazard model. Age-stratified analysis was performed to evaluate the interaction of age and alprazolam use with MACEs. RESULTS: The study cohort consisted of 335 517 alprazolam-exposed patients and 1:1 PSM controls. The mean age was 63.62 ± 12.71 years in the Alprazolam-exposed population. Alprazolam exposure was significantly associated with reduced risk of MACEs (aHR = 0.965, 95% CI = 0.954-0.977), including ischemic stroke (aHR = 0.958, 95% CI = 0.940-0.976), hemorrhagic stroke (aHR = 0.856, 95% CI = 0.821-0.892), myocardial infarction (aHR = 0.933, 95% CI = 0.900-0.968), sudden cardiac death (aHR = 0.955, 95% CI = 0.916-0.996), and all-cause mortality (aHR = 0.921, 95% CI = 0.909-0.932). In the age-subgroup analysis, alprazolam showed the greatest risk reduction effect in hemorrhagic stroke for patients aged <65 years (aHR = 0.779, 95% CI = 0.727-0.835). CONCLUSION: Alprazolam usage in patients with hypertension was associated with a slightly reduced risk of MACEs and all-cause mortality, and up to 22% reduced risk of hemorrhagic stroke was observed in alprazolam users aged <65 years.
