BACKGROUND: Because of the complex anatomy of the right posterior hepatic pedicle, there have been few reports on standardized laparoscopic portal territory staining-guided anatomical resection of liver segment 6 (LPTAR-S6). This study aimed to elucidate the indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence staining methods for LPTAR-S6. PATIENTS AND METHODS: LPTAR-S6 can be performed using positive and negative fluorescence staining approaches. We implemented these two approaches for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Descriptions of the surgical strategy and technical details are presented. RESULTS: Two patients safely underwent LPTAR-S6 using a preoperative three-dimensional reconstruction plan. The intraoperative ICG fluorescence staining effect was satisfactory, and the anatomical landmarks were fully exposed. CONCLUSIONS: A detailed preoperative three-dimensional reconstruction plan, complete intraoperative application of real-time laparoscopic ultrasound guidance, and ICG fluorescence staining can result in accurate transection of the liver parenchyma during LPTAR-S6.

Extensive studies have demonstrated the diverse impacts of electromagnetic waves at gigahertz and terahertz (THz) frequencies on cytoplasmic membrane properties. However, there is little evidence of these impacts on intracellular membranes, particularly mitochondrial membranes crucial for mitochondrial physiology. In this study, human neuroblast-like cells were exposed to continuous 0.1 THz radiation at an average power density of 33 mW/cm2. The analysis revealed that THz exposure significantly altered the mitochondrial ultrastructure. THz waves enhanced the enzymatic activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain but disrupted supercomplex assembly, compromising mitochondrial respiration. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed altered rates of change in the quantity of hydrogen bonds and infiltration of water molecules in lipid bilayers containing cardiolipin, indicating the specific behavior of cardiolipin, a signature phospholipid in mitochondria, under THz exposure. These findings suggest that THz radiation can significantly alter mitochondrial membrane properties, impacting mitochondrial physiology through a mechanism related to mitochondrial membrane, and provide deeper insight into the bioeffects of THz radiation.

In China, the Liaodong Peninsula is an important growing area for blueberries because of the high organic matter content in the soil, the abundance of light, and the large temperature difference between day and night. However, the low temperature and relative humidity of the air during the winter and early spring in the Liaodong Peninsula are the main reasons for the damage to blueberry plants. Here, we documented the transcriptome and proteome dynamics in response to cold stress in three blueberry cultivars ('Northland', 'Bluecrop', and 'Berkeley'). Functional enrichment analysis indicated that many differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) were mainly involved in the pathways of protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, the glutathione metabolism pathway, and ribosomes. We identified 12,747 transcription factors (TFs) distributed in 20 families. Based on our findings, we speculated that cold tolerance development was caused by the expression of calcium-related genes (CDPKs and CMLs), glutathione proteins, and TFs (NAC, WRKY, and ERF). Our investigation found that three cultivars experienced cold damage when exposed to temperatures between -9 °C and -15 °C in the field. Therefore, the cold resistance of blueberries during overwintering should not only resist the influence of low temperatures but also complex environmental factors such as strong winds and low relative humidity in the air. The order of cold resistance strength in the three blueberry cultivars was 'Berkeley', 'Bluecrop', and 'Northland'. These results provide a comprehensive profile of the response to cold stress, which has the potential to be used as a selection marker for programs to improve cold tolerance in blueberries.

Flexible electronics is an emerging and cutting-edge technology which is considered as the building blocks of the next generation micro-nano electronics. Flexible electronics integrate both active and passive functions in devices, driving rapid developments in healthcare, the Internet of Things (IoT), and industrial fields. Among them, flexible temperature sensors, which can be directly attached to human skin or curved surfaces of objects for continuous and stable temperature measurement, have attracted much attention for applications in disease prediction, health monitoring, robotic signal sensing, and curved surface temperature measurement. Preparing flexible temperature sensors with high sensitivity, fast response, wide temperature measurement interval, high flexibility, stretchability, low cost, high reliability, and stability has become a research target. This article reviewed the latest development of flexible temperature sensors and mainly discusses the sensitive materials, working mechanism, preparation process, and the applications of flexible temperature sensors. Finally, conclusions based on the latest developments, and the challenges and prospects for research in this field are presented.

Semiconducting materials show high potential for solar energy harvesting due to their suitable bandgaps, which allow the efficient utilization of light energy larger than their bandgaps. However, the photon energy smaller than their bandgap is almost unused, which significantly limits their efficient applications. Herein, plasmonic Pd/SnS2 microcubes with abundant Pd nanoparticles attached to the SnS2 nanosheets are fabricated by an in situ photoreduction method. The as-prepared Pd/SnS2 microcubes extend the light-harvesting ability of SnS2 beyond its cutoff wavelength, which is attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of the Pd nanoparticles and the 3D structure of the SnS2 microcubes. Pd nanoparticles can also enhance the light absorption of TiO2 nanoparticles and NiPS3 nanosheets beyond their cutoff wavelengths, revealing the universality for promoting absorption above the cutoff wavelength of the semiconductors. When the plasmonic Pd/SnS2 microcubes are integrated into a hydrophilic sponge acting as the solar evaporator, a solar-to-vapor efficiency of up to 89.2% can be achieved under one sun. The high solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency and the broad applicability of extending the light absorption far beyond the cutoff wavelength of the semiconductor comprise the potential of innovative plasmonic nanoparticle/semiconductor composites for solar desalination.

Epitaxial growth of thin-film heterostructures is generally considered the most successful procedure to obtain interfaces of excellent structural and electronic quality between 3D materials. However, these interfaces can only join material systems with crystal lattices of matching symmetries and lattice constants. This article presents a novel category of interfaces, the fabrication of which is membrane-based and does not require epitaxial growth. These interfaces therefore overcome the limitations imposed by epitaxy. Leveraging the additional degrees of freedom gained, atomically clean interfaces are demonstrated between threefold symmetric sapphire and fourfold symmetric SrTiO3. Atomic-resolution imaging reveals structurally well-defined interfaces with a novel moiré-type reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of appendicoscopy using a single-operator cholangioscope (SOC) for the management of acute obstructive appendicitis. METHODS: This study describes 110 cases of acute obstructive appendicitis managed with the use of appendicoscopy between January 2021 and June 2023. The success rate (technical + clinical), procedure time, time to abdominal pain relief according to a visual analog scale score, postoperative length of hospital stay, and adverse event rates were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: The technical success rate of appendicoscopy was 96.4%, and the clinical success rate was 91.8%. The mean ± standard deviation procedure time was 20.9 ± 10 minutes. The abdominal pain score at 6 hours after the procedure was ≤3 (visual analog scale method) in 99.1% of patients. The average length of postoperative hospital stay was 3.5 ± 1.5 days. No adverse events occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Appendicoscopy seems to be a feasible and effective alternative therapy for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of acute obstructive appendicitis.

Objective: Thrombocytopenia is commonly associated with infectious diseases and serves as an indicator of disease severity. However, reports on its manifestation in conjunction with Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (KPLA) are scarce. The present study sought to elucidate the correlation between thrombocytopenia and KPLA severity and delve into the etiological factors contributing to the incidence of thrombocytopenia. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of the clinical data from patients with KPLA admitted between June 2012 and June 2023 was performed. Baseline characteristics, biochemical assessments, therapeutic interventions, complications, and clinical outcomes were compared between patients with and without thrombocytopenia. To investigate the potential etiologies underlying thrombocytopenia, the association between platelet count reduction and thrombophlebitis was examined, with a particular focus on platelet consumption. Furthermore, bone marrow aspiration results were evaluated to assess platelet production anomalies. Results: A total of 361 KPLA patients were included in the study, among whom 60 (17%) had concurrent thrombocytopenia. Those in the thrombocytopenia group exhibited significantly higher rates of thrombophlebitis (p = 0.042), extrahepatic metastatic infection (p = 0.01), septic shock (p = 0.024), admissions to the intensive care unit (p = 0.002), and in-hospital mortality (p = 0.045). Multivariate analysis revealed that thrombocytopenia (odds ratio, 2.125; 95% confidence interval, 1.114-4.056; p = 0.022) was independently associated with thrombophlebitis. Among the thrombocytopenic patients, eight underwent bone marrow aspiration, and six (75%) had impaired medullar platelet production. After treatment, 88.6% of thrombocytopenic patients (n = 47) demonstrated recovery in their platelet counts with a median recovery time of five days (interquartile range, 3-6 days). Conclusions: Thrombocytopenia in patients with KPLA is indicative of increased disease severity. The underlying etiologies for thrombocytopenia may include impaired platelet production within the bone marrow and augmented peripheral platelet consumption as evidenced by the presence of thrombophlebitis.

BACKGROUND: Currently, an effective tracer technique for lymphatic drainage during laparoscopic surgery has not been established. This study aimed to elucidate a new fluorescence, imaging technique targeting the hepatic lymphatic drainage area, using indocyanine green (ICG). METHODS: A patient diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) located in segment 8 of the liver was injected with ICG into the connective tissue of the Glisson pedicle supplied by the lesion's liver segment, avoiding the bile duct, portal vein, and hepatic artery. This was performed under the guidance of laparoscopic ultrasonographic localization to trace the lymph nodes. RESULTS: The lymphatic drainage area traced intraoperatively by ICG was consistent with the definition of the right regional lymph nodes for ICC. The lymph nodes were dissected, followed by addition of a fluorescence tracer. CONCLUSIONS: Mastering intraoperative ultrasonic puncture technology can enable effective and accurate tracing of the lymph nodes of the liver segment where the lesion is located. However, the technical standards for this methodology need to be established through further studies.

OBJECTIVE: Whole-course nutrition management (WNM) has been proven to improve outcomes and reduce complications. We conducted this randomized controlled trial to validate its effectiveness in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). METHODS: From 1 December 2020, to 30 November 2023, this single-center randomized clinical trial was conducted at the Department of Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery in a major hospital in Beijing, China. Participants who were undergoing PD were enrolled and randomly allocated to either the WNM group or the control group. The primary outcome was the incidence of postoperative complications. Subgroup analysis in patients who were at nutritional risk was performed. Finally, a 6-month follow-up was conducted and the economic benefit was evaluated using an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). RESULTS: A total of 84 patients were randomly assigned (1:1) into the WNM group and the control group. The incidences of total complications (47.6% vs. 69.0%, P =0.046), total infections (14.3% vs. 33.3%, P =0.040), and abdominal infection (11.9% vs. 31.0%, P =0.033) were significantly lower in the WNM group. In the subgroup analysis of patients at nutritional risk, 66 cases were included (35 cases in the WNM group and 31 cases in the control group). The rate of abdominal infection (11.4% vs. 32.3%, P =0.039) and postoperative length of stay (23.1±10.3 vs. 30.4±17.2, P =0.046) were statistically different between the two subgroups. In the 6-month follow-up, more patients reached the energy target in the WNM group (97.0% vs. 79.4%, P =0.049) and got a higher daily energy intake (1761.3±339.5 vs. 1599.6±321.5, P =0.045). The ICER suggested that WNM saved 31 511 Chinese Yuan (CNY) while reducing the rate of total infections by 1% in the intention-to-treat (ITT) population and saved 117 490 CNY in patients at nutritional risk, while WNM saved 31 511 CNY while reducing the rate of abdominal infections by 1% in the ITT population and saved 101 359 CNY in patients at nutritional risk. CONCLUSION: In this trial, whole-course nutrition management was associated with fewer total postoperative complications, total and abdominal infections, and was cost-effective, especially in patients at nutritional risk. It seems to be a favorable strategy for patients undergoing PD.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials offer rich tuning opportunities generated by different stacking configurations or by introducing intercalants into the vdW gaps. Current knowledge of the interplay between stacking polytypes and intercalation often relies on macroscopically averaged probes, which fail to pinpoint the exact atomic position and chemical state of the intercalants in real space. Here, by using atomic-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope, we visualize a stacking-selective self-intercalation phenomenon in thin films of the transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) Nb1+xSe2. We observe robust contrasts between 180°-stacked layers with large amounts of Nb intercalants inside their vdW gaps and 0°-stacked layers with little detectable intercalants inside their vdW gaps, coexisting on the atomic scale. First-principles calculations suggest that the films lie at the boundary of a phase transition from 0° to 180° stacking when the intercalant concentration x exceeds ~0.25, which we could attain in our films due to specific kinetic pathways. Our results offer not only renewed mechanistic insights into stacking and intercalation, but also open up prospects for engineering the functionality of TMDCs via stacking-selective self-intercalation.

Potassium ion channels are the structural basis for excitation transmission, heartbeat, and other biological processes. The selectivity filter is a critical structural component of potassium ion channels, whose structure is crucial to realizing their function. As biomolecules vibrate and rotate at frequencies in the terahertz band, potassium ion channels are sensitive to terahertz waves. Therefore, it is worthwhile to investigate how the terahertz wave influences the selectivity filter of the potassium channels. In this study, we investigate the structure of the selectivity filter of Kv1.2 potassium ion channels using molecular dynamics simulations. The effect of an electric field on the channel has been examined at four different resonant frequencies of the carbonyl group in SF: 36.75 37.06, 37.68, and 38.2 THz. As indicated by the results, 376GLY appears to be the critical residue in the selectivity filter of the Kv1.2 channel. Its dihedral angle torsion is detrimental to the channel structural stability and the transmembrane movement of potassium ions. 36.75 THz is the resonance frequency of the carbonyl group of 376GLY. Among all four frequencies explored, the applied terahertz electric field of this frequency has the most significant impact on the channel structure, negatively impacting the channel stability and reducing the ion permeability by 20.2% compared to the absence of fields. In this study, we simulate that terahertz waves in the mid-infrared frequency region can significantly alter the structure and function of potassium ion channels and that the effects of terahertz waves differ greatly based on frequency.

The polarity of a surface can affect the electronic and structural properties of oxide thin films through electrostatic effects. Understanding the mechanism behind these effects requires knowledge of the atomic structure and electrostatic characteristics at the surface. In this study, we use annular bright-field imaging to investigate the surface structure of a Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO2+x (0 < x < 1) film. We observe a polar distortion coupled with octahedral rotations in a fully oxidized Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO3 sample, and a stronger polar distortion in a partially reduced sample. Its spatial depth extent is about three unit cells from the surface. Additionally, we use four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) to directly image the local atomic electric field surrounding Ni atoms near the surface and discover distinct valence variations of Ni atoms, which are confirmed by atomic-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Our results suggest that the strong surface reconstruction in the reduced sample is closely related to the formation of oxygen vacancies from topochemical reduction. These findings provide insights into the understanding and evolution of surface polarity at the atomic level.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with simultaneous magnetic semiconducting properties and a negative Poisson's ratio are crucial for fabricating multifunctional electronic devices. However, progress in this area has been generally constrained. Based on first-principles calculations, we engineered a 2D Ni-based oxyhalide with a honeycomb lattice structure. It was observed that the NiCl2O8 monolayer exhibits both high- and low-buckling states in its geometry, along with intrinsic magnetic semiconductor properties in its electronic structure. Importantly, we demonstrated that the magnetic ordering of the NiCl2O8 lattice is susceptible to applied strain, which resulted in a phase transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic under biaxial strain. The Curie temperature was also evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations within the Ising model. Additionally, our research uncovered that the 2D NiCl2O8 lattice chain displays a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) along the z-direction. The triangular hinge structure in its centrosymmetric configuration was identified as the origin of this unique phenomenon. The coexistence of NPR and magnetic phase transition properties in the NiCl2O8 lattice makes it quite promising for applications in nanoelectronic and spintronic devices.

Protected areas (PAs) are important barriers to ensure the ecological security of territory. Light pollution is a threat to PAs, which is particularly obvious in the urban agglomeration environment. We used multi-source big data (satellite remote sensing light data, land cover types and points of interest) to quantitatively analyze the temporal and spatial dynamics of nighttime light in the PAs of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) urban agglomeration from 2000 to 2018, the correlation between the night light environment within the PAs and human activity intensity outside, as well as the sensitive distance of the PAs to artificial light interference. The results showed that the total value of nighttime light data of PAs in the PRD increased from 71107 nanoW·cm-2·sr-1 to 127682 nanoW·cm-2·sr-1 from 2000 to 2018, the mean value per pixel increased from 15.3 nanoW·cm-2·sr-1 to 23.7 nanoW·cm-2·sr-1, and the lighted ratio increased from 73.3% to 86.4%, indicating that the nighttime light environment of PAs in the region were facing cumulative deterioration risks and serious challenges. The nighttime light intensity of the PAs in the core area of the PRD was much higher than that in the peripheral areas such as Zhaoqing and Huizhou, whereas the expansion degree of the PAs in the peripheral areas was higher than that in the core area. The nighttime light environment inside the PAs was positively correlated with the intensity of human activities around it. The most sensitive distance of the PAs to the artificial light interference around it was 10 km, and the interference degree tended to be stable after 30 km. We proposed that 0-10 km area outside the boundary of the PAs should be the light control core zone and 10-20 km area as the control buffer zone.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic anatomical liver resection of segment 8 (LALR-S8) remains a challenge for anatomical laparoscopic segmentectomy. Most current reports on LALR-S8 are case series using one surgical approach, and there is a lack of multicenter data on identifying intersegmental planes using different approaches. In this study, the authors aimed to elucidate the short-term results of three different approaches for LALR-S8 for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), focusing on intersegmental plane determination, and to reflect on current practice regarding different approaches at multiple centers in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical cohort data of 122 patients who underwent LALR-S8 for HCC at seven leading centers in China were retrospectively analyzed. The surgical procedures of all approaches were summarized and standardized according to the method of the Glissonean pedicle of segment 8 identification. The postoperative short-term outcomes and oncological results of the three approaches were evaluated and compared. RESULTS: Three approaches were used: laparoscopic ultrasonography-guided indocyanine green fluorescent positive staining approach (11/122, 9.02%), hepatic vein-guided approach (99/122, 81.15%), and Glissonean indocyanine green fluorescent negative staining approach (12/122, 9.83%). Seven (5.73%) patients experienced complications according to the Clavien-Dindo classification, and the rate of grade ≥IIIa complications was 2.46%. The R0 resection rates among the groups (margin >1 mm) and the margin width showed no statistical difference. CONCLUSION: LALR-S8 is safe and feasible for treating HCC under standardized surgical techniques and appropriate surgical approaches. The three reported approaches had comparable short-term oncological outcomes, while the hepatic vein-guided approach was most commonly used.
