Cancer patients are at high risk of malnutrition, which can lead to adverse health outcomes such as prolonged hospitalization, increased complications, and increased mortality. Accurate and timely nutritional assessment plays a critical role in effectively managing malnutrition in these patients. However, while many tools exist to assess malnutrition, there is no universally accepted standard. Although different tools have their own strengths and limitations, there is a lack of narrative reviews on nutritional assessment tools for cancer patients. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a non-systematic literature search using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from their inception until May 2023. A total of 90 studies met our selection criteria and were included in our narrative review. We evaluated the applications, strengths, and limitations of 4 commonly used nutritional assessment tools for cancer patients: the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). Our findings revealed that malnutrition was associated with adverse health outcomes. Each of these 4 tools has its applications, strengths, and limitations. Our findings provide medical staff with a foundation for choosing the optimal tool to rapidly and accurately assess malnutrition in cancer patients. It is essential for medical staff to be familiar with these common tools to ensure effective nutritional management of cancer patients.

Chirality introduces a new dimension of functionality to materials, unlocking new possibilities across various fields. When integrated with plasmonic hybrid nanostructures, this attribute synergizes with plasmonic and other functionalities, resulting in unprecedented chiroptical materials that push the boundaries of the system's capabilities. Recent advancements have illuminated the remarkable chiral light-matter interactions within chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials, allowing for the harnessing of their tunable optical activity and hybrid components. These advancements have led to applications in areas such as chiral sensing, catalysis, and spin optics. Despite these promising developments, there remains a need for a comprehensive synthesis of the current state-of-the-art knowledge, as well as a thorough understanding of the construction techniques and practical applications in this field. This review begins with an exploration of the origins of plasmonic chirality and an overview of the latest advancements in the synthesis of chiral plasmonic hybrid nanostructures. Furthermore, representative emerging categories of hybrid nanomaterials are classified and summarized, elucidating their versatile applications. Finally, the review engages with the fundamental challenges associated with chiral plasmonic hybrid nanostructures and offer insights into the future prospects of this advanced field.

The combination of the chiral concept and inorganic nanostructures holds great potential for significantly impacting catalytic processes and products. However, the synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials with engineered chiroptical activity and identical structure and size presents a substantial challenge, impeding exploration of the relationship between chirality (optical activity) and catalytic efficiency. Here, we present a facile wet-chemical synthesis for achieving intrinsic and tunable chiroptical activity within colloidal copper oxide nanostructures. These nanostructures exhibit strong spin-polarization selectivity compared with their achiral counterparts. More importantly, the ability to engineer chiroptical activity within the same type of chiral nanostructures allows for the manipulation of spin-dependent catalysis, facilitating a study of the connection between the chiroptical magnitude (asymmetric factor) and catalytic performance in inorganic nanostructures. Specifically, using these materials as model catalysts in a proof-of-concept catalytic reaction, we reveal a linear correlation between the asymmetric factor of chiral nanomaterials and the efficiency of the catalytic reaction. This work paves the way for the development of chiral inorganic nanosystems and their application in catalysis through chiroptical engineering.

Chiral inorganic nanomaterials due to their unique asymmetric nanostructures have gradually demonstrated intriguing chirality-dependent performance in photo(electro)catalytic conversion, such as water splitting. However, understanding the correlation between chiral inorganic characteristics and the photo(electro)catalytic process remains challenging. In this perspective, we first highlight the chirality source of inorganic nanomaterials and briefly introduce photo(electro)catalysis systems. Then, we delve into an in-depth discussion of chiral effects exerted by chiral nanostructures and their photo-electrochemistry properties, while emphasizing the emerging chiral inorganic nanomaterials for photo(electro)catalytic conversion. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of chiral inorganic nanomaterials for photo(electro)catalytic conversion are prospected. This perspective provides a comprehensive overview of chiral inorganic nanomaterials and their potential in photo(electro)catalytic conversion, which is beneficial for further research in this area.

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is well-studied in molecular systems but has been rarely reported in pure inorganic nanoscale crystals. Herein, we develop a family of pure inorganic rare-earth nanowires with robust and color-tunable CPL emissions. The chiral rare earth nanowires possess intrinsic atomic chirality with controlled handedness that is guided by the enantiomers with molecular chirality in the synthesis. By varying luminescent ions incorporated in the crystal lattice, color-tunable CPL can be achieved and is thermally robust, preserving emission over 300 °C, distinct from existing CPL-active materials. Moreover, as a proof of concept, we demonstrate that the synthesized nanostructures can be easily dispersed in a polymer matrix to enable transparent and flexible CPL films. This study opens up a promising avenue to design robust and tunable CPL materials helpful to the understanding of inorganic chiral information and capable of further applications in novel optoelectronic devices.

Understanding and controlling chirality in inorganic crystalline materials at the nanoscale is crucial in elucidating fundamental chirality-dependent physical and chemical processes as well as advancing new technological prospects, but significant challenges remain due to the lack of material control. Here, we have developed a facile and general bottom-up synthetic strategy for achieving chiral plasmonic Au nanostructures, including nanocubes and nanorods with fine chirality control. The underlying chiral mechanism enabled by the chiral boundary morphology is substantiated by theoretical modeling and finite element method (FEM) simulation. Because of the robustness of induced handedness and their small size, these as-synthesized chiral nanostructures can be further employed as building blocks toward the formation of complex chiral nanostructures. We have demonstrated a new class of chiral hybrid metal-semiconductor nanostructures that can allow integration of chirality with other properties and functionalities. All of these together have paved the way to engineer nanoscale inorganic chirality and thus study various emerging chirality-entangled effects with practical technological applications.

Massive blooms of Nemopilema nomurai have occurred recently across East Asian waters. They are potentially important as zooplankton predators, as well as being competitors for prey with zooplanktivorous fish. Few studies have estimated the predation effects on zooplankton by N. nomurai in situ. To quantify the natural diets and feeding rates and estimate the predation effects, N. nomurai medusae were collected in the northern East China Sea and southern Yellow Sea, one of the principal nursery grounds of this jellyfish, during May 2019. The gut contents indicated that copepods were an important food source for N. nomurai; copepods <1000 µm represented the bulk of total prey intake in number (> 99 %). Linear regression analyses showed that the copepods number in the gut contents was significantly influenced by medusa diameter and prey abundance. Calculations using the above data indicated that one medusa (mean diameter: 26.06 ± 9.73 cm) consumed approximately 5248 ± 2768 of copepods daily. However, even the maximum predation pressure was <0.1 % of the total copepods standing stock daily due to the small diameter and low density/biomass of N. nomurai medusae in May 2019. The data presented here suggested that the predation effects of N. nomurai on copepods were low and might not reduce prey availability to fish with diets consisting mainly of copepods during the early occurrence stage of the N. nomurai population.

BACKGROUND: The Plasmodium zygote-to-ookinete developmental transition is an essential step for establishing an infection in the mosquito vector, and antigens expressed during this stage are potential targets for transmission-blocking vaccines (TBVs). The secreted ookinete protein 26 (PSOP26) is a newly identified ookinete surface protein. The anti-PSOP26 serum has moderate transmission-blocking activity, indicating the benefit of further investigating this protein as a target for TBVs. METHODS: The function of psop26 was analyzed by targeted gene disruption. A chimeric PSOP25-PSOP26 protein was expressed in the Escherichia coli system. The PSOP25-PSOP26 fusion protein, along with mixed (PSOP25 + PSOP26) or single proteins (PSOP26 or PSOP25), were used for the immunization of mice. The antibody titers and immunogenicity of individual sera were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and Western blot. The transmission-blocking activity of sera from different immunization schemes was assessed using in vitro and in vivo assays. RESULTS: PSOP26 is a surface protein expressed in Plasmodium gametes and ookinetes. The protein is dispensable for asexual blood-stage development, gametogenesis, and zygote formation, but is essential for the zygote-to-ookinete developmental transition. Specifically, both the prevalence of infections and oocyst densities were decreased in mosquitoes fed on psop26-null mutants. Mixtures of individual PSOP25 and PSOP26 fragments (PSOP25 + PSOP26), as well as chimeras (PSOP25-PSOP26), elicited high antibody levels in mice, with no immunological interference. Antisera against the mixed and fusion proteins elicited higher transmission-reducing activity (TRA) than antisera against the single PSOP26 antigen, but comparable to antisera against PSOP25 antigen alone. CONCLUSIONS: PSOP26 plays a critical role in the zygote-to-ookinete developmental transition. PSOP25 is a promising TBV candidate that could be used alone to target the ookinete stage.

Gametogenesis is essential for malaria parasite transmission, but the molecular mechanism of this process remains to be refined. Here, we identified a G-protein-coupled receptor 180 (GPR180) that plays a critical role in signal transduction during gametogenesis in Plasmodium. The P. berghei GPR180 was predominantly expressed in gametocytes and ookinetes and associated with the plasma membrane in female gametes and ookinetes. Knockout of pbgpr180 (Δpbgpr180) had no noticeable effect on blood-stage development but impaired gamete formation and reduced transmission of the parasites to mosquitoes. Transcriptome analysis revealed that a large proportion of the dysregulated genes in the Δpbgpr180 gametocytes had assigned functions in cyclic nucleotide signal transduction. In the Δpbgpr180 gametocytes, the intracellular cGMP level was significantly reduced, and the cytosolic Ca2+ mobilization showed a delay and a reduction in the magnitude during gametocyte activation. These results suggest that PbGPR180 functions upstream of the cGMP-protein kinase G-Ca2+ signaling pathway. In line with this functional prediction, the PbGPR180 protein was found to interact with several transmembrane transporter proteins and the small GTPase Rab6 in activated gametocytes. Allele replacement of pbgpr180 with the P. vivax ortholog pvgpr180 showed equal competence of the transgenic parasite in sexual development, suggesting functional conservation of this gene in Plasmodium spp. Furthermore, an anti-PbGPR180 monoclonal antibody and the anti-PvGPR180 serum possessed robust transmission-blocking activities. These results indicate that GPR180 is involved in signal transduction during gametogenesis in malaria parasites and is a promising target for blocking parasite transmission. IMPORTANCE Environmental changes from humans to mosquitoes activate gametogenesis of the malaria parasite, an obligative process for parasite transmission, but how the signals are relayed remains poorly understood. Here, we show the identification of a Plasmodium G-protein-coupled receptor, GPR180, and the characterization of its function in gametogenesis. In P. berghei, GPR180 is dispensable for asexual development and gametocytogenesis, but its deletion impairs gametogenesis and reduces transmission to mosquitoes. GPR180 appears to function upstream of the cGMP-protein kinase G-Ca2+ signaling pathway and is required for the maximum activity of this pathway. Genetic complementation shows that the GPR180 ortholog from the human malaria parasite P. vivax was fully functional in P. berghei, indicating functional conservation of GPR180 in Plasmodium spp. With predominant expression and membrane association of GPR180 in sexual stages, GPR180 is a promising target for blocking transmission, and antibodies against GPR180 possess robust transmission-blocking activities.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between starchy vegetable consumption and subgroup consumption in the first trimester and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: A prospective study (n = 1444) was conducted in China. Dietary information was assessed by 24-hour dietary recalls for three days and then we calculated the consumption of total starchy vegetable and its subgroups, including (1) potato and (2) other starchy vegetable (pumpkin, lotus root, yam, taro, water chestnut, pea, and cowpea). GDM was diagnosed according to the results of 75-g two-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 24-28 weeks of gestation. A modified log-binomial regression was used to estimate RRs and 95% CIs of GDM risk. RESULTS: Among the 1444 participants in our study, 520 were diagnosed with GDM. The adjusted RRs (95% CIs) for GDM from the lowest to the highest quartiles of total starchy vegetable consumption were 1.00 (reference), 1.29 (1.06, 1.57), 1.13 (0.93, 1.40), and 1.26 (1.02, 1.56), respectively; p for trend = .032. For potato, the RR of GDM risk was 1.32 for the highest potato intake quartile compared with the lowest quartile (95% CI 1.07-1.64, p for trend = .003). In addition, we did not observe an association between other starchy vegetable intakes and GDM risk. CONCLUSIONS: A higher consumption of total starchy vegetables and potatoes in the first trimester is associated with a greater risk of GDM.

Inorganic chiral hybrid nanostructures that embed chirality within distinct material compositions can create novel chiral properties and functionalities absent from achiral nanostructures; however, they remain largely unexplored. We report, for the first time, a class of chiral plasmonic metal-semiconductor core-shell nanostructures that employ structurally chiral nanoparticles as chirality inducing templates to grow functional shell materials, which allowed us to independently control material parameters such as core geometry and shell thickness, as well as handedness of the system. We experimentally and theoretically achieved enhanced and tunable chiroptical activity of the heterostructures as a result of the core-shell strong coupling effect. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we demonstrate that the chiral hybrid nanostructures can drive chirality-dependent photocatalytic hydrogen generation under circularly polarized light. This study enables rational design and functionalization of chiral hybrid nanomaterials towards enhanced chiral light-matter interactions and chiral device applications.

BACKGROUND: Multiple surgical approaches have been proposed to repair the congenital choanal atresia. However, there remains no general consensus about the optimal surgical technique. This study aimed to describe and evaluate outcomes of the endoscopic septonasal flap technique combined with bioabsorbable steroid-eluting stents for repair of congenital choanal atresia in neonates and infants. METHODS: Clinical data of 37 neonates and infants with congenital choanal atresia who received nasal endoscopic surgery with the flap technique between January 2018 and July 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. All patients underwent the ultra­low­dose paranasal sinus computed tomography imaging preoperatively to confirm diagnosis and plan the surgery. In these patients, the mirrored L-shaped flap technique was performed for bilateral atresia and the cross-over L-shaped flap technique was performed for unilateral atresia. A total of 22 patients had silicone stents postoperatively and 15 patients had bioabsorbable steroid-eluting stents postoperatively. Silicone stents were removed at one month postoperatively under secondary general anesthesia, while no anesthesia was needed to remove the bioabsorbable steroid-eluting stents. Postoperative follow-up ranged from 10 months to 3 years. RESULTS: The septonasal flap technique was performed in all patients. Compared with the silicone stents group, the average operative duration and the hospital length of stay in the bioabsorbable steroid-eluting stents group were decreased [(97.46 ± 15.37) min vs (83.49 ± 19.16) min t = 13.733, P < 0.001] [(12.8 ± 3.22) d vs (7.67 ± 3.91) d t = 15.082, P < 0.001], the average number of procedures was reduced [(2.04 ± 0.64) vs (1.00 ± 0.001), t = 82.689, P < 0.001], the differences were statistically significant. There were no reports of postoperative restenosis and complications in the bioabsorbable steroid-eluting stents group, and follow-up endoscopic examinations showed patency and stable nasal passages in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: The endoscopic septonasal flap technique can effectively expose and expand the choanal bony structure for repair of congenital choanal atresia in neonates and infants. The combined use of this technique along with bioabsorbable steroid-eluting stents can help prevent the need for revision procedures and also against stent-related injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the dairy product intake during pregnancy in Southwest China and to explore its relationship with neonatal birth body mass. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted to select healthy singleton pregnant women at 8-14 weeks of gestation in a maternal and fetal health care institution in Chengdu City. Dairy product consumption during the first, second, third trimester of pregnancy were collected by 24-hour dietary recalls at 8-14 weeks, 24-28 weeks and 32-36 weeks of pregnancy, respectively, and the total milk intake and milk consumption rate were calculated. According to the dietary guidelines for Chinese pregnant women (2016), the recommended amount of milk (300 g/d) was used as the standard to calculate the compliance rate. The respondents were divided into three groups: no dairy consumption group, insufficient dairy consumption group and suitable dairy consumption group. The gestational age at delivery and neonatal birth body mass were collected by the hospital information system. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between milk intake during pregnancy and neonatal birth body mass. RESULTS: A total of 962 pregnant women were included. The average milk intake in the first, second and third trimester of pregnancy were 125.0 (0, 236.1) g/d, 208.3 (0, 284.7) g/d and 250.0 (150.0, 416.7) g/d, respectively, with the compliance rates of 12.6%, 33.2% and 48.4%, respectively. The average neonatal birth body mass was (3 225.0±399.8) g. The incidence of small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) was 8.3% and 3.9%, respectively. Compared with no dairy consumption group in the second trimester of pregnancy, the risk of SGA was lower in suitable dairy consumption group (odds ratio (OR)=0.786, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.385-0.976). Compared with no dairy consumption group in the third trimester of pregnancy, the risk of SGA was lower in insufficient dairy consumption group and suitable dairy consumption group (OR=0.672, 95%CI: 0.477-0.821 and OR=0.497, 95%CI: 0.116-0.807, respectively). No association was observed between milk intake in the first trimester and neonatal birth body mass, and milk intake in the second and third trimester of pregnancy was not associated with the risk of LGA. CONCLUSION: Insufficient milk intake of pregnant women is a significant problem in southwest China and needs to be improved. Milk intake during pregnancy is associated with neonatal birth body mass, and increased milk intake in the second and third trimester of pregnancy may reduce the risk of SGA.

MYCT1, a target of c-Myc, inhibits laryngeal cancer cell migration, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In the study, we detected differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from laryngeal cancer cells transfected by MYCT1 using RNA-seq (GSE123275). DEGs from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) were first screened by comparison of transcription data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GSE6631) and the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). GO and KEGG pathway analysis explained the functions of the DEGs. The DEGs overlapped between GSE6631and TCGA datasets were then compared with ours to find the key DEGs downstream of MYCT1 related to the adhesion and migration of laryngeal cancer cells. qRT-PCR and Western blot were applied to validate gene expression at mRNA and protein levels, respectively. Finally, the cell adhesion, migration, and wound healing assays were to check cell adhesion and migration abilities, respectively. As results, 39 overlapping genes were enriched in the GSE6631 and TCGA datasets, and most of them revealed adhesion function. Thirteen of 39 genes including COL6 members COL6A1, COL6A2, and COL6A3 were overlapped in GSE6631, TCGA, and GSE123275 datasets. Similar to our RNA-seq results, we confirmed that COL6 is a target of MYCT1 in laryngeal cancer cells. We also found that MYCT1 inhibited the adhesion and migration of laryngeal cancer cells via COL6. These indicate that COL6 is a potential target of MYCT1 and participates the adhesion and migration of laryngeal cancer cells, which provides an important clue for further study on how MYCT1 regulating COL6 in laryngeal cancer progression.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged postoperative ileus (PPOI) is one of the common complications in gastric cancer patients who underwent gastrectomy. Evidence on the predictors of PPOI after gastrectomy is limited and few prediction models of nomogram are used to estimate the risk of PPOI. We hypothesized that a predictive nomogram can be used for clinical risk estimation of PPOI in gastric cancer patients. AIM: To investigate the risk factors for PPOI and establish a nomogram for clinical risk estimation. METHODS: Between June 2016 and March 2017, the data of 162 patients with gastrectomy were obtained from a prospective and observational registry database. Clinical data of patients who fulfilled the criteria were obtained. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression models were performed to detect the relationship between variables and PPOI. A nomogram for PPOI was developed and verified by bootstrap resampling. The calibration curve was employed to detect the concentricity between the model probability curve and ideal curve. The clinical usefulness of our model was evaluated using the net benefit curve. RESULTS: This study analyzed 14 potential variables of PPOI in 162 gastric cancer patients who underwent gastrectomy. The incidence of PPOI was 19.75% in patients with gastrectomy. Age older than 60 years, open surgery, advanced stage (III-IV), and postoperative use of opioid analgesic were independent risk factors for PPOI. We developed a simple and easy-to-use prediction nomogram of PPOI after gastrectomy. This nomogram had an excellent diagnostic performance [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.836, sensitivity = 84.4%, and specificity = 75.4%]. This nomogram was further validated by bootstrapping for 500 repetitions. The AUC of the bootstrap model was 0.832 (95%CI: 0.741-0.924). This model showed a good fitting and calibration and positive net benefits in decision curve analysis. CONCLUSION: We have developed a prediction nomogram of PPOI for gastric cancer. This novel nomogram might serve as an essential early warning sign of PPOI in gastric cancer patients.

The thermal control system based on a combination of passive and active methods for a compact aerial camera used in the unmanned aerial vehicle system is studied. Integrated analysis and an experimental method are developed to ensure both low-power limit and high image quality of the camera. For rapid estimation of thermal behavior, we develop a thermal mathematic model based on a thermal network method that also offers an initial design reference for the active control system; then we develop a more complex integrated analysis method to analyze and optimize the thermal system, which allows us to get performance insights such as internal temperature gradient and airflow of the compact system. We also focus on analyzing the optical surface errors under thermal disturbance. Comparisons of interferometer test records and thermal-elastic simulation results are presented, and this comparison shows that the integrated optomechanical analysis method contributes to the success of optomechanical system design by ensuring thermal disturbance will not deform the optical surfaces beyond allowable limits. Finally, the design method is verified through a thermo-optic experiment.

In this article, we explore the disease spectrum and clinical characteristics of and the diagnosis and endoscopic approach to treating isolated sphenoid sinus disease (ISSD) in children. To these ends, we review a case series of 19 patients (mean age: 8.1 ± 4.9 years, range: 1.1-15 years, median age: 6.7 years, 13 males, 6 females) who underwent surgical treatment at our hospital for ISSD during the 4 years between 2012 and 2016. The symptoms of pediatric sphenoid sinus disease tend to be variable and nonspecific and include atypical headache, nasal congestion, epistaxis, postnasal drip, snoring, and impaired vision. Headache is the presenting symptom in 42% of patients, but headaches occurred in no specific or typical location. Ten patients underwent preoperative endoscopic examination, and abnormalities in the sphenoethmoidal recess were found in 6 (60%) of these 10 patients. All 19 patients underwent ultra-low-dose paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) imaging, and 9 patients with suspected tumors or sphenoid mucoceles were further examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The endoscopic transostial approach was performed in all 19 patients: 16 patients received excision of inflammatory sphenoid sinus disorders and benign tumors, including sphenoid sinusitis, sphenoid sinus mucocele, sphenoid sinus polyp, and ossifying fibroma; 3 patients with suspected tumors received biopsies to detect rhabdomyosarcoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and juvenile xanthogranuloma. No intraoperative or immediate postoperative complications were observed. Children with opacified sphenoid sinus identified by radiographic imaging presented a variety of pathologies. The most common lesions were associated with inflammatory disease. Because the symptoms of pediatric sphenoid sinus disease tend to be variable and nonspecific, CT remains the standard for evaluating sphenoid sinus disease, and ultra-low-dose paranasal sinus CT imaging is recommended and can provide images of equal or better quality compared with those obtained by standard dose CT. In addition, MRI is an essential adjunct in the diagnosis and selection of treatment for suspected tumors of the sphenoid sinus. The endoscopic transostial approach was especially suitable for the management of pediatric benign isolated sphenoid sinus lesions.
