RESUMO

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to high value-added fuels or chemicals driven by the renewable energy is promising to alleviate global warming. However, the selective CO2 reduction to C2 products remains challenge. Cu-based catalyst with the specific Cu0 and Cu+ sites is important to generate C2 products. This work used nitrogen (N) to tune amounts of Cu0 and Cu+ sites in Cu2O catalysts and improve C2-product conversion. The controllable Cu0/Cu+ ratio of Cu2O catalyst from 0.16 to 15.19 was achieved by adjusting the N doping amount using NH3/Ar plasma treatment. The major theme of this work was clarifying a volcano curve of the ethylene Faraday efficiency as a function of the Cu0/Cu+ ratio. The optimal Cu0/Cu+ ratio was determined as 0.43 for selective electroreduction CO2 to ethylene. X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to elucidate that the strong interaction between N and Cu increased the binding energy of NCu bond and stabilize Cu+, resulting in a 92.3% reduction in the potential energy change for *CO-*CO dimerization. This study is inspiring in designing high performance electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion.

RESUMO

As a promising material with an efficient light capture capability, a low amount of carbon nanotubes can affect growth and photosynthesis by regulating microalgal cells, thereby enhancing the pollutant removal efficiency in wastewater. In this study, microalgal-fungal consortia of Chlorella vulgaris and Ganoderma lucidum were developed with different types and concentrations of carbon nanotubes. The treatment effect of microalgal-fungal consortia on simulated digestate was also studied. The results demonstrate that 1.5 mg/L of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes remarkably promoted the formation, growth and photosynthesis of consortium. The dry weight and chlorophyll a content reached 19.3 ± 0.53 mg/symbiont and 27.3 ± 0.52 µg/L, respectively. Moreover, the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and tetracycline hydrochloride were 94.1%, 65.5%, 61.9% and 96.2%, respectively. Overall, these findings suggest a promising future for the use of carbon nanotubes in wastewater treatment by regulating microalgal-fungal consortia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic features of the brain tissue diagnosed as ulegyria from modified anatomic hemispherectomy for refractory epilepsy. METHODS: The clinical and pathologic findings were reviewed in 39 patients who underwent modified anatomic hemispherectomy and diagnosed as ulegyria in the Epilepsy Center of Tsinghua University Yuquan Hospital from 2007 to 2011. RESULTS: All patients including 30 males and 9 females had medically intractable seizures, and the mean age of seizure onset and disease duration were 4.0 years and 7.3 years respectively. Significant history included febrile seizure in 14 patients (35.9%), cerebral hemorrhage in 8 patients (20.5%), fetal distress and surgical trauma each in 6 patients (15.4%), vascular malformation and cerebral hemorrhage in 1 patient (2.6%), and unclear history in 4 patients (10.2%). Histologically, all cases were characterized by cortical destruction, with neuronal loss and gliosis. All cases were accompanied by varying degree of cortical dysplasia, which were diagnosed as focal cortical dysplasia IIId. Hippocampus sclerosis was identified in 2 cases. Seizure outcome after surgery revealed 37 patients (94.9%) had an Engel grade I, two patients (5.1%) had an Engel grade II. CONCLUSIONS: Febrile seizure, cerebral hemorrhage, fetal distress and surgical trauma in childhood can lead to refractory epilepsy. Histopathological change in the brain is ulegyria accompanied by focal cortical dysplasia IIId. Modified anatomic hemispherectomy is an effective therapy to treat those patients with extensive changes of one hemisphere.
