BACKGROUND: The widespread problem of suicide and its severe burden in bipolar disorder (BD) necessitate the development of objective risk markers, aiming to enhance individual suicide risk prediction in BD. METHODS: This study recruited 123 BD patients (61 patients with prior suicide attempted history (PSAs), 62 without (NSAs)) and 68 healthy controls (HEs). The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model was used to decompose the resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) into multiple hyper/hypo-RSFC patterns. Thereafter, according to the quantitative results of individual heterogeneity over latent factor dimensions, the correlations were analyzed to test prediction ability. RESULTS: Model constructed without introducing suicide-related labels yielded three latent factors with dissociable hyper/hypo-RSFC patterns. In the subsequent analysis, significant differences in the factor distributions of PSAs and NSAs showed biases on the default-mode network (DMN) hyper-RSFC factor (factor 3) and the salience network (SN) and central executive network (CEN) hyper-RSFC factor (factor 1), indicating predictive value. Correlation analysis of the individuals' expressions with their Nurses' Global Assessment of Suicide Risk (NGASR) revealed factor 3 positively correlated (r = 0.4180, p < 0.0001) and factor 1 negatively correlated (r = - 0.2492, p = 0.0055) with suicide risk. Therefore, it could be speculated that patterns more associated with suicide reflected hyper-connectivity in DMN and hypo-connectivity in SN, CEN. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided individual suicide-associated risk factors that could reflect the abnormal RSFC patterns, and explored the suicide related brain mechanisms, which is expected to provide supports for clinical decision-making and timely screening and intervention for individuals at high risks of suicide.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is one of the main microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus, as well as the leading cause of end-stage renal disease. Intestinal microbiota has emerged as a crucial regulator of its occurrence and development. Dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota can disrupt the intestinal mucosal barrier, abnormal immunological response, reduction in short-chain fatty acid metabolites, and elevation of uremic toxins, all closely related to the occurrence and development of DKD. However, the underlying mechanisms of how intestinal microbiota and its metabolites influence the onset and progression of DKD has not been fully elucidated. In the current review, we will try to summarize the microecological mechanism of DKD by focusing on three aspects: the intestinal microbiota and its associated metabolites, and the "gut-kidney axis," and try to summarize therapies targeted at managing the intestinal microbiota, expecting to provide theoretical basis for the subsequent study of the relationship between intestinal homeostasis and DKD, and will open an emerging perspective and orientation for DKD treatment.

Hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury (HALI) is a complication of oxygen therapy. Ferroptosis is a vital factor in HALI. This paper was anticipated to investigate the underlying mechanism of Wedelolactone (WED) on ferroptosis in HALI. The current study used hyperoxia to injure two models, one HALI mouse model and one MLE-12 cell injury model. We found that WED treatment attenuated HALI by decreasing the lung injury score and lung wet/dry weight ratio and alleviating pathomorphological changes. Then, the inflammatory reaction and apoptosis in HALI mice and hyperoxia-mediated MLE-12 cells were inhibited by WED treatment. Moreover, WED alleviated ferroptosis with less iron accumulation and reversed expression alterations of ferroptosis markers, including MDA, GSH, GPX4, SLC7A11, FTH1, and TFR1 in hyperoxia-induced MLE-12 cells in vitro and in vivo. Nrf2-KO mice and Nrf2 inhibitor (ML385) decreased WED's ability to protect against apoptosis, inflammatory response, and ferroptosis in hyperoxia-induced MLE-12 cells. Collectively, our data highlighted the alleviatory role of WED in HALI by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

This study investigates the enhancement of hydraulic lime mortar (HLM) using varying contents of metakaolin (MK) to improve its application in the restoration of historic buildings. Samples from historic structures were analyzed, and the effects of different MK contents on the physical and mechanical properties of HLM were examined. The reaction mechanism and microstructural changes were evaluated using XRD and SEM analysis. The results indicated that increasing MK levels in HLM led to a decrease in fluidity, with fluidity reducing by 4.8% at 12% MK. The addition of MK increased water consumption for standard consistency by 5.4% and shortened the final setting time by 10.2%. MK consumption promoted secondary hydration, enhancing compressive strength by up to 98.1% and flexural strength by up to 55.1%, and increasing bonding strength by 26.9%. The density of HLM improved with MK addition, slightly reducing moisture content by 4.5% and water absorption by 4.6%, while the water vapor transmission properties decreased by 50.9%, indicating reduced porosity. The elastic modulus of the mortar increased significantly from 2.19 GPa to 7.88 GPa with the addition of MK, enhancing rigidity and crack resistance. The optimal blend for restoration materials was found to be 9.0% MK and 25.0% heavy calcium carbonate and was characterized by moderate mechanical strength, enhanced early strength, commendable permeability, minimal risk of cracking, and ease of application. This blend is highly suitable for the rehabilitation of historic structures.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the chemical profile of Xanthocerais lignum's extracts of different polarities and their impact on rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we identified anti-RA markers and predicted their action mechanisms. METHODS: A collagen-induced arthritis rat model was established, and UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS technology was employed to analyze and identify the chemical constituents within the alcohol extract of Xanthocerais lignum and its various extraction fractions, as well as their translocation into the bloodstream. Serum spectrum-effect correlation analysis was utilized to elucidate the pharmacodynamic material basis of Xanthocerais lignum against RA and to screen for Q-Markers. Finally, the potential anti-RA mechanisms of the Q-Markers were predicted through compound-target interaction data and validated using molecular docking techniques. RESULTS: We identified 71 compounds, with flavan-3-ols and flavanones as key components. Of these, 36 were detected in the bloodstream, including 17 original and 19 metabolized forms. Proanthocyanidin A2, dihydroquercetin, catechin, and epicatechin (plus glucuronides) showed potential anti-RA activity. These compounds, acting as Q-Markers, may modulate ERK, NF-κB, HIF-1α, and VEGF in the HIF-1 pathway. CONCLUSIONS: This research clarifies Xanthocerais lignum's pharmacodynamic material basis against RA, identifies 4 Q-Markers, and offers insights into their mechanisms, aiding quality assessment and lead compound development for RA treatment.

Viral infections are caused by the adhesion of viruses to host cell receptors, including sialylated glycans, glycosaminoglycans, and human blood group antigens (HBGAs). Atomic-level structural information on the interactions between viral particles or proteins with glycans can be determined to provide precise targets for designing antiviral drugs. Milk glycans, existing as free oligosaccharides or glycoconjugates, have attracted increasing attention; milk glycans protect infants against infectious diseases, particularly poorly manageable viral infections. Furthermore, several glycans containing structurally distinct sialic acid/fucose/sulfate modifications in human milk acting as a "receptor decoy" and serving as the natural antiviral library, could interrupt virus-receptor interaction in the first line of defense for viral infection. This review highlights the basis of virus-glycan interactions, presents specific glycan receptor binding by gastroenterovirus viruses, including norovirus, enteroviruses, and the breakthroughs in the studies on the antiviral properties of human milk glycans, and also elucidates the role of glycans in respiratory viruses infection. In addition, recent advances in methods for performing virus/viral protein-glycan interactions were reported. Finally, we discuss the prospects and challenges of the studies on the clinical application of human milk glycan for viral interventions.

Among the three most prevalent cancers affecting the female reproductive system, ovarian cancer (OV) ranks as the second most frequently diagnosed. It is important to investigate the genomic complexity of OV to develop diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Through the utilization of bioinformatics analysis, it was determined that RacGTPase Activating Protein 1 (RACGAP1) holds significant significance in the field of OV chemotherapeutics, an aspect that has not been thoroughly explored in prior investigations. In our study, a notable increase in RACGAP1 expression was detected in ovarian cancer, demonstrating a robust association with clinicopathological features and patient prognosis. In vivo and in vitro testing revealed that RACGAP1 acts synergistically with chemotherapeutics to enhance their effects on ovarian cancer. Furthermore, an interaction between RACGAP1 and the subunit G2 of the condensin II complex, known as non-SMC condensin II complex subunit G2 (NCAPG2), has been identified. Our findings may provide new insight for improving therapeutic strategies for OV.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the expression of P-glycoprotein in T-cell subpopulations of lymphocytes from adult patients with refractory glomerulonephritis (GN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flow cytometry was used to analyze the T-cell subpopulations of lymphocytes from adult patients with refractory GN and healthy individuals. The CD243 antibody marked the membrane P-glycoprotein of immune cells. RESULTS: The mean ± standard deviation (SD) values of percentages of CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+ cells in lymphocytes from patients with refractory GN were 63.94 ± 26.98, 55.16 ± 4.78, and 37.79 ± 6.01%, respectively. These values in healthy individuals were 74.88 ± 3.75, 56.60 ± 9.22, and 34.20 ± 5.21%, respectively. No significant differences were observed between the patients with refractory GN and healthy individuals. The mean ± SD values of percentages of CD3+CD4+CD243+ and CD3+CD8+CD243+ cells in the lymphocytes of patients with refractory GN were 0.14 ± 0.11 and 0.11 ± 0.07%, respectively. These values in healthy individuals were 0.05 ± 0.02 and 0.04 ± 0.02%, respectively. The difference in CD3+CD8+CD243+ percentage between patients with refractory GN and healthy individuals was significant (p = 0.0216). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that P-glycoprotein expression on CD3+CD8+ T cells is a promising marker and a suitable target of drug resistance in patients with refractory GN.

OBJECTIVES: To map whether and how systematic reviews (SRs) with network meta-analysis (NMA) use presentation formats to report (a) structured evidence summaries - here defined as reporting of effects estimates in absolute effects with certainty ratings and with a method to rate interventions across one or more outcome(s) - and (b) NMA results in general. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a systematic survey, searching MEDLINE (Ovid) for SRs with NMA published between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021. We planned to include a random sample of publications, with predefined mechanisms in place for saturation, and included SRs that met prespecified quality criteria and extracted data on presentation formats that reported: (a) estimates of effects, (b) certainty of the evidence, or (c) rating of interventions. RESULTS: The 200 eligible SRs, from 158 unique Journals, utilized 1133 presentation formats. We found structured evidence summaries in 10 publications (5.0%), with 3 (1.5%) reporting structured evidence summaries across all outcomes, including benefits and harms. Sixteen of the 133 SRs (11.7%) reporting dichotomous outcomes included estimates of absolute effects. Seventy-six SRs (38.0%) reported both benefits and harms and 26 SRs (13.0%) reported certainty ratings in presentation formats, 20 (76.9%) used Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation and 6 (23.1%) used Confidence In Network Meta-analysis. Surface Under the Cumulative Ranking Curve was the most common method to rate interventions (69 SRs, 34.5%). NMA results were most often reported using forest plots (108 SRs, 54.0%) and league tables (93 SRs, 46.5%). CONCLUSION: Most SRs with NMA do not report structured evidence summaries and only rarely do such summaries include reporting of both benefits and harms; those that do offer effective user-friendly communication and provide models for optimal NMA presentation practice.

Biofilm formation on indwelling medical devices such as catheters and ventilators due to the adhesion of bacteria poses significant challenges in healthcare. Surface modification with micro- and nano-structures offers a promising strategy to prevent bioadhesion and is safer than surface chemical modification approaches. Here, catheters were prepared using silk fibroin (SF) hydrogels and an infusion molding method, with the inner surface featuring a micropapillae structure inspired by lotus leaves (SF-CMP). After phenylethanol (PEA) fumigation treatment, the resulting catheters (SF-CMP PEA) displayed improved swelling resistance and mechanical properties compared to methanol-treated catheters (SF-CMP MeOH). PEA was more efficient than methanol in controlling the size, distribution, and content of silk crystalline ß-sheet blocks and thus the swelling and mechanical properties. Moreover, the micro-papillae structure on SF-CMP PEA remained stable over 35 days in solution, in contrast to SF-CMP MeOH, which lasted <7 days. SF-CMP PEA exhibited repellent effects against E. coli and S. aureusin vitro, and low cytotoxicity to the endothelial cells cultured on the unpatterned surface. Additionally, subcutaneous implantation studies showed reduced inflammation around the micropatterned samples compared to controls with a plain, unpatterned surface. The unique properties of SF-based materials, including tunable structures, biocompatibility, degradation, and drug-loading capability make them an attractive material for anti-bioadhesion in applications ranging from indwelling medical devices to tissue engineering scaffolds.

The NAC family of transcription factors includes no apical meristem (NAM), Arabidopsis thaliana transcription activator 1/2 (ATAF1/2), and cup-shaped cotyledon (CUC2) proteins, which are unique to plants, contributing significantly to their adaptation to environmental challenges. In the present study, we observed that the PvNAC52 protein is predominantly expressed in the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. Overexpression of PvNAC52 in Arabidopsis strengthened plant resilience to salt, alkali, osmotic, and ABA stresses. PvNAC52 significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the degree of oxidative damage to cell membranes, proline content, and plant water loss by increasing the expression of MSD1, FSD1, CSD1, POD, PRX69, CAT, and P5CS2. Moreover, the expression of genes associated with abiotic stress responses, such as SOS1, P5S1, RD29A, NCED3, ABIs, LEAs, and DREBs, was enhanced by PvNAC52 overexpression. A yeast one-hybrid assay showed that PvNAC52 specifically binds to the cis-acting elements ABRE (abscisic acid-responsive elements, ACGTG) within the promoter. This further suggests that PvNAC52 is responsible for the transcriptional modulation of abiotic stress response genes by identifying the core sequence, ACGTG. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for the further analysis of the targeted cis-acting elements and genes downstream of PvNAC52 in the common bean.

In the study, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were used as alternatives to traditional chemical solvents for the extraction of polyphenols from Elaeagnus angustifolia L. Nine NADESs were tested for the first time and compared with ethanol and water (traditional solvents) regarding the extraction of phenolic compounds from E. angustifolia L. These solvents were particularly effective at extracting polyphenols, whose low water solubility usually requires high amounts of organic solvents. The solvent based on choline chloride and malonic acid provided optimal results and was selected for further optimization. The effects of material-to-liquid ratio, ultrasound time, and ultrasound temperature on the extraction efficiency were studied through single-factor experiments. These parameters were optimized by Box-Behnken design using response surface methodology. The optimal conditions identified were 49.86 g/mL of material-to-liquid ratio, 31.10 min of ultrasound time, and 62.35 °C of ultrasound temperature, resulting in a high yield of 140.30 ± 0.19 mg/g. The results indicated that the NADES extraction technique provided a higher yield than the conventional extraction process. The antioxidant activity of the extract of polyphenols from E. angustifolia L. was determined, and UPLC-IMS-QTOF-MS was used to analyze the phenolic compounds in it. The results revealed that the scavenging ability of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) extracted by NADES was higher than that of polyphenols extracted by water and ethanol. Furthermore, a total of 24 phenolic compounds were identified in the extract. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in which a green and efficient NADES extraction method has been used to extract bioactive polyphenols from E. angustifolia L., which could provide potential value in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food additives.

Crovalimab is a novel C5 complement inhibitor that enables rapid and sustained C5 inhibition with subcutaneous, low-volume self-administration every 4 weeks. COMMODORE 2 (NCT04434092) is a global, randomized, open-label, multicenter, phase 3 trial evaluating the non-inferiority of crovalimab versus eculizumab in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria not previously treated with C5 inhibition. C5 inhibitor-naive patients with lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ≥2 × upper limit of normal (ULN) were randomized 2:1 to crovalimab or eculizumab. Co-primary efficacy endpoints were proportion of patients with hemolysis control (centrally assessed LDH ≤1.5 × ULN) and proportion with transfusion avoidance. Secondary efficacy endpoints were proportions of patients with breakthrough hemolysis, stabilized hemoglobin, and change in FACIT-Fatigue score. The primary treatment period was 24 weeks. Two hundred and four patients were randomized (135 crovalimab; 69 eculizumab). Crovalimab was non-inferior to eculizumab in the co-primary endpoints of hemolysis control (79.3% vs. 79.0%; odds ratio, 1.0 [95% CI, 0.6, 1.8]) and transfusion avoidance (65.7% vs. 68.1%; weighted difference, -2.8 [-15.7, 11.1]), and in the secondary efficacy endpoints of breakthrough hemolysis (10.4% vs. 14.5%; weighted difference, -3.9 [-14.8, 5.3]) and hemoglobin stabilization (63.4% vs. 60.9%; weighted difference, 2.2 [-11.4, 16.3]). A clinically meaningful improvement in FACIT-Fatigue score occurred in both arms. Complete terminal complement activity inhibition was generally maintained with crovalimab. The safety profiles of crovalimab and eculizumab were similar with no meningococcal infections. Most patients who switched from eculizumab to crovalimab after the primary treatment period preferred crovalimab. These data demonstrate the positive benefit-risk profile of crovalimab.

AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to determine the effect of Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. (EF) on osteoporosis (OP) and its underlying molecular mechanisms, and to explore the existence of the "Gut-Bone Axis". MATERIAL AND METHODS: The impact of EF decoction (EFD) on OP was evaluated using istopathological examination and biochemical assays. Targeted metabolomics was employed to identify key molecules and explore their molecular mechanisms. Alterations in the gut microbiota (GM) were evaluated by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The role of the GM was clarified using an antibiotic cocktail and faecal microbiota transplantation. RESULTS: EFD significantly increased the weight (14.06%), femur length (4.34%), abdominal fat weight (61.14%), uterine weight (69.86%), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels (59.48%), while reducing serum type I collagen cross-linked carboxy-terminal peptide (CTX-I) levels (15.02%) in osteoporotic mice. The mechanism of action may involve the regulation of the NLRP3/cleaved caspase-1/IL-1ß signalling pathway in improving intestinal tight junction proteins and bone metabolism. Additionally, EFD modulated the abundance of related GM communities, such as Lactobacillus, Coriobacteriaceae, bacteria of family S24-7, Clostridiales, and Prevotella, and increased propionate and butyrate levels. Antibiotic-induced dysbiosis of gut bacteria disrupted OP regulation of bone metabolism, which was restored by the recovery of GM. CONCLUSIONS: Our study is the first to demonstrate that EFD works in an OP mouse model by utilising GM and butyric acid. Thus, EF shows promise as a potential remedy for OP in the future.

PURPOSE: Observational studies and clinical validation have suggested a link between thyroid dysfunction and an elevated ovarian cancer (OC) risk. However, whether this association indicates a cause-and-effect relationship remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the plausible causal impact of thyroid dysfunction on OC through a Mendelian randomization (MR) study. METHODS: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism were obtained as exposures and those for OC (N = 199,741) were selected as outcomes. Inverse variance-weighted method was used as the main estimation method. A series of sensitivity analyses, including Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept analysis, forest plot scatter plot, and leave-one-out test, was conducted to assess the robustness of the estimates. RESULTS: Genetic prediction of hyperthyroidism was associated with a potential increase in OC risk (odds ratio = 1.094, 95% confidence interval: 1.029-1.164, p = 0.004). However, no evidence of causal effects of hypothyroidism, TSH, and FT4 on OC or reverse causality was detected. Sensitivity analyses demonstrated consistent and reliable results, with no significant estimates of heterogeneity or pleiotropy. CONCLUSIONS: This study employed MR to establish a correlation between hyperthyroidism and OC risk. By genetically predicting OC risk in patients with hyperthyroidism, our research suggests new insights for early prevention and intervention of OC.

Tonotopic organization of the auditory cortex has been extensively studied in many mammalian species using various methodologies and physiological preparations. Tonotopy mapping in primates, however, is more limited due to constraints such as cortical folding, use of anesthetized subjects, and mapping methodology. Here we applied a combination of through-skull and through-window intrinsic optical signal imaging, wide-field calcium imaging, and neural probe recording techniques in awake marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), a New World monkey with most of its auditory cortex located on a flat brain surface. Coarse tonotopic gradients, including a recently described rostral-temporal (RT) to parabelt gradient, were revealed by the through-skull imaging of intrinsic optical signals and were subsequently validated by single-unit recording. Furthermore, these tonotopic gradients were observed with more detail through chronically implanted cranial windows with additional verifications on the experimental design. Moreover, the tonotopy mapped by the intrinsic-signal imaging methods was verified by wide-field calcium imaging in an AAV-GCaMP labeled subject. After these validations and with further effort to expand the field of view more rostrally in both windowed and through-skull subjects, an additional putative tonotopic gradient was observed more rostrally to the area RT, which has not been previously described by the standard model of tonotopic organization of the primate auditory cortex. Together, these results provide the most comprehensive data of tonotopy mapping in an awake primate species with unprecedented coverage and details in the rostral proportion and support a caudal-rostrally arranged mesoscale organization of at least three repeats of functional gradients in the primate auditory cortex, similar to the ventral stream of primate visual cortex.

Gastric cancer (GC) imposes a heavy burden on global public health, and microRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of GC. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the hotspots and frontiers in the field of miRNAs in GC to guide future research. A total of 2,051 publications related to miRNAs in GC from January 2013 to December 2023 were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace was used to identify research hotspots and delineate developmental trends. In the past decade, China, Nanjing Medical University, and Ba Yi were the most contributing research country, institute, and author in this field, respectively. The role of miRNAs as biomarkers in GC, the mechanism of miRNAs in the progression of GC, and the impact of the mutual effects between miRNAs and Helicobacter pylori on GC have been regarded as the research hotspots. The mechanisms of miRNAs on glucose metabolism and the application of the roles of circular RNAs as miRNA sponges in GC treatment will likely be frontiers. Overall, this study called for strengthened cooperation to identify targets and therapeutic regimes for local specificity and high-risk GC types, and to promote the translation of research results into clinical practice.

The combined use of immune checkpoint inhibitors and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (ICI/TKI) is an effective treatment strategy for some cancers. A better understanding of the potential additive toxicity for ICI/TKI combinations is needed to inform patient and provider treatment decisions. We aim to evaluate the safety of ICI/TKI combinations for individuals with renal cell or endometrial carcinoma. This rapid systematic review (SR) protocol follows PRISMA guidelines. A systematic search will be designed, peer reviewed and executed by experienced information specialists (Cochrane Central, MEDLINE, Embase) to identify published SRs and primary studies published since the most recent SR search. Randomized, quasi- or non-randomized controlled trials and comparative cohort studies are eligible if they compare ICI/TKI combinations to monotherapy or standard of care in participants with renal cell or endometrial carcinoma. The primary outcome is grade ≥ 3 treatment-related adverse-effects. Studies will be screened, selected, extracted and assessed for risk of bias by a single reviewer and checked completely by a second. Where feasible and appropriate, we will pool studies separately by design and indication using meta-analysis and test robustness of effects using prespecified subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Results will be summarized descriptively and presented in tables and figures. OBJECTIVE: In daily life, we must dynamically and flexibly deploy strategies to regulate our emotions, which depends on awareness of emotions and internal bodily signals. Variability in emotion-regulation strategy use may predict fewer negative emotions, especially when people pay more attention to their bodily states-or have greater "interoceptive attention" (IA). Using experience sampling, this study aimed to test whether IA predicts variability in strategy use and whether this variability and IA together predict negative affect. METHODS: University student participants (n = 203; 165 females; Mage = 20.68, SDage = 1.84) completed trait questionnaires and reported state-levels of IA, emotional awareness, negative affect, and emotion-regulation strategies, seven times daily for one week. RESULTS: State IA significantly predicted between-strategy variability, which was mediated by emotional awareness (indirect effect = .002, 95% confidence interval = [<.001, .003]). Between-strategy variability was associated with lower negative affect, particularly when individuals had higher state IA (simple slope = -.83, t = -5.87, p < .001) versus lower IA (simple slope = -.31, t = -2.62, p = .009). CONCLUSIONS: IA appears to facilitate adaptative emotion regulation and help alleviate negative affect. Findings underscore the key roles of IA and emotion-regulation flexibility in mental health.

The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between dietary intake of fatty acids and the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the United States population. Adult participants of the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this nationwide cross-sectional study. Dietary fatty acid intake was obtained from two 24-h dietary recall interviews. The intake of dietary fatty acids was analyzed as a continuous and categorical variable. AMD status was assessed using nonmydriatic fundus photographs. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between dietary fatty acid intake and AMD. The unweighted population included 4702 individuals of whom 374 had AMD. After adjusting for relevant variables, each 1 unit increase (1 mg/1000 kcal) intake of EPA (OR: 0.996, 95% CI: 0.993-0.996, P = 0.018), DPA (OR: 0.976, 95% CI: 0.962-0.990, P = 0.002), and DHA (OR: 0.996, 95% CI: 0.994-0.999, P = 0.003) were significantly decreased odds of any AMD. The highest versus lowest quartile of EPA (OR: 0.476, P for trend < 0.001), DPA (OR: 0.467, P for trend = 0.005) and DHA (OR: 0.586, P for trend = 0.008) were negatively associated with the odds of any AMD. Subgroup analysis showed that higher quartiles of EPA (OR: 0.461, P for trend < 0.002), DPA (OR: 0.467, P for trend = 0.006) and DHA (OR: 0.578, P for trend = 0.007) exhibited a negative association with early AMD. The study found no significant association between the intake of dietary fatty acids, including n-3 PUFA, and the odds of late AMD. In the 2005-2008 NHANES population, higher dietary DHA, DPA and EPA intake associated with decreased odds of early AMD. However, no clear association was found between specific types of FAs and late AMD.
