RESUMO

Anshen Shumai Decoction (ASSMD) is traditionally employed to manage coronary artery disease arrhythmias. Its protective efficacy against myocardial infarction remains to be elucidated. This investigation employed a rat model of myocardial infarction, achieved through the ligation of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery, followed by a 28-day administration of ASSMD. The study observed the decoction's mitigative impact on myocardial injury, with gene regulation effects discerned through transcriptomic analysis. Furthermore, ASSMD's influence on cardiomyocyte apoptosis and fibrotic protein secretion was assessed using an embryonic rat cardiomyocyte cell line (H9c2) under hypoxic conditions and rat cardiac fibroblasts subjected to normoxic culture conditions with TGF-ß. A functional rescue assay involving overexpression of FOS and Early Growth Response Factor 1 (EGR1), combined with inhibition of the p38 Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathway, was conducted. Results indicated that ASSMD significantly curtailed cardiomyocyte apoptosis and myocardial fibrosis in infarcted rats, primarily by downregulating FOS and EGR1 gene expression and inhibiting the upstream p38 MAPK pathway. These actions of ASSMD culminated in reduced expression of pro-apoptotic, collagen, and fibrosis-associated proteins, conferring myocardial protection and anti-fibrotic effects on cardiac fibroblasts.

RESUMO

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia reaction (ENO3RR) holds great potential as a cost-effective method for synthesizing ammonia. This work designed a cerium (Ce) doped Cu2+1O/Cu3VO4 catalyst. The coupling of vanadium-based oxides with Cu2+1O effectively adjusts the catalyst's electronic structure, addressing the inherent issues of limited activity and low conductivity in typical copper-based oxides; moreover, Ce doping generates oxygen vacancies (Ov), providing more active sites and thereby enhancing the ENO3RR performance. The catalyst exhibits superior NH3Faradaic efficiency (93.7 %) with a NH3 yield of 18.905 mg h-1 cm-2at -0.5 V vs. RHE under alkaline conditions. This study provides guidance for the design of highly efficient catalysts for ENO3RR.

RESUMO

In this study, sulfur-containing iron carbon nanocomposites (S@Fe-CN) were synthesized by calcining iron-loaded biomass and utilized to activate persulfate (PS) for the combined chemical oxidation and microbial remediation of petroleum-polluted soil. The highest removal efficiency of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) was achieved at 0.2% of activator, 1% of PS and 1:1 soil-water ratio. The EPR and quenching experiments demonstrated that the degradation of TPHs was caused by the combination of 1O2,·OH, SO4·-, and O2·-. In the S@Fe-CN activated PS (S@Fe-CN/PS) system, the degradation of TPHs underwent two phases: chemical oxidation (days 0 to 3) and microbial degradation (days 3 to 28), with kinetic constants consistent with the pseudo-first-order kinetics of chemical and microbial remediation, respectively. In the S@Fe-CN/PS system, soil enzyme activities decreased and then increased, indicating that microbial activities were restored after chemical oxidation under the protection of the activators. The microbial community analysis showed that the S@Fe-CN/PS group affected the abundance and structure of microorganisms, with the relative abundance of TPH-degrading bacteria increased after 28 days. Moreover, S@Fe-CN/PS enhanced the microbial interactions and mitigated microbial competition, thereby improving the ability of indigenous microorganisms to degrade TPHs.

RESUMO

Intestinal dysbiosis plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD), and probiotics have emerged as potential modulators of central nervous system function through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. This study aimed to elucidate the anti-inflammatory effects and underlying mechanisms of the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis NJ241 (NJ241) in a mouse model of PD induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). The impact of NJ241 was comprehensively assessed in PD mice through behavioral tests, immunofluorescence, Western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), 16S rRNA sequencing, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) detection. NJ241 exhibited notable efficacy in mitigating MPTP-induced weight loss, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and behavioral deficits in mice. Furthermore, it demonstrated protected against MPTP-induced dopaminergic neuron death and inhibited the activation of glial cells in the substantia nigra (SN). NJ241 demonstrated the ability to normalized dysbiosis in the intestinal microbiota and elevate SCFA levels in PD mice. Additionally, NJ241 reversed MPTP-induced reductions in colonic GLP-1 levels and the expression of GLP-1R and PGC-1α in the SN. Notably, GLP-1R antagonists partially reversed the inhibitory effects of NJ241 on the activation of glial cells in the SN. In summary, NJ241 exerts a neuroprotective effect against MPTP-induced neuroinflammation by enhancing intestinal GLP-1 levels and activating nigral PGC-1α signaling. These findings provide a rationale for the exploration and development of probiotic-based therapeutic strategies for PD.

RESUMO

Insects pose significant challenges in cotton-producing regions. Here, they describe a high-throughput CRISPR/Cas9-mediated large-scale mutagenesis library targeting endogenous insect-resistance-related genes in cotton. This library targeted 502 previously identified genes using 968 sgRNAs, generated ≈2000 T0 plants and achieved 97.29% genome editing with efficient heredity, reaching upto 84.78%. Several potential resistance-related mutants (10% of 200 lines) their identified that may contribute to cotton-insect molecular interaction. Among these, they selected 139 and 144 lines showing decreased resistance to pest infestation and targeting major latex-like protein 423 (GhMLP423) for in-depth study. Overexpression of GhMLP423 enhanced insect resistance by activating the plant systemic acquired resistance (SAR) of salicylic acid (SA) and pathogenesis-related (PR) genes. This activation is induced by an elevation of cytosolic calcium [Ca2+ ]cyt flux eliciting reactive oxygen species (ROS), which their demoted in GhMLP423 knockout (CR) plants. Protein-protein interaction assays revealed that GhMLP423 interacted with a human epidermal growth factor receptor substrate15 (EPS15) protein at the cell membrane. Together, they regulated the systemically propagating waves of Ca2+ and ROS, which in turn induced SAR. Collectively, this large-scale mutagenesis library provides an efficient strategy for functional genomics research of polyploid plant species and serves as a solid platform for genetic engineering of insect resistance.

RESUMO

Osteoarthritis has become a major disease threatening human health. The mechanism of injury under fluid involvement can be studied by finite element method. However, most models only model the articular cartilage to study the subchondral bone structure, which is too simplistic. In this study, a complete osteochondral unit was modeled and provided with a poroelastic material, and as osteoarthritis develops and the size, thickness, and shape of the osteochondral unit defect varies, the fluid flow behavior is altered, which may have functional consequences that feed back into the progression of the injury. The results of the study showed that interstitial fluid pressure and velocity decreased in defective osteochondral units. This trend was exacerbated as the size and thickness of the defect in the osteochondral unit increased. When the defect reached the trabeculae, pressure around the cartilage defect in the osteochondral unit was greatest, flow velocity in the subchondral cortical bone was greatest, and pressure and flow velocity around the trabecular defect were lowest. As osteoarthritis develops, the osteochondral unit becomes more permeable, and the pressure of the interstitial fluid decreases while the flow rate increases, resulting in severe nutrient loss. This may be the fluid flow mechanism behind osteochondral defects and osteoarthritis.

RESUMO

Smart and dynamic electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials possess a remarkable capacity to modify their EMI shielding abilities, rendering them invaluable in various civil and military applications. However, the present response mechanism of switch-type EMI shielding materials is slightly restricted, as it primarily depends on continuous pressure induction, thereby resulting in concerns regarding their durability and reliability. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate a novel method for achieving solvent-responsive, reversible switching, and robust EMI shielding capabilities using a controlled proton-reservoir ordered gel. The gel contains polyaniline (PANI) and sodium alginate (SA). Initially, SA acts as a proton reservoir for PANI in an aqueous system, enhancing the doping level of PANI and improving its electrical conductivity. Additionally, PANI and SA chains respond to diverse polar solvents, such as water, acetonitrile, ethanol, n-hexane, and air, inducing distinct conformations that affect the degree of PANI conjugation and electron migration along the chains. This process is reversible and non-destructive to the polymer chain, ensuring the effective and uncompromised performance of the EMI shielding switch. We can achieve precise and reversible tuning (on/off) of EMI shielding with different effectiveness levels by manipulating the solvents within the framework. This work opens a new solvent-stimuli avenue for the development of EMI shielding materials with reliable and intelligent on/off switching capabilities.

RESUMO

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (ENO3RR) is a green ammonia synthesis method under ambient conditions relative to the traditional Haber-Bosch technology, which does not require high-temperature or high-pressure conditions and can convert nitrate pollutants in the environment into value-added NH3, thus achieving a dual purpose. However, more electrocatalysts with a remarkable performance towards high-efficiency ENO3RR need to be developed. In this work, a Cu/NiO-NF composite electrocatalyst with a nanorod structure on nickel foam was successfully fabricated, which contains heterogeneous interfaces between Cu and NiO toward selective electrocatalytic nitrate reduction for ammonia synthesis. The steric nanorod morphology of the catalyst can significantly increase the surface area, expose more active sites, and improve the reaction activity. Moreover, the construction of the composite and the interface effectively boosts the synergistic effect of the active species Cu and NiO, which can regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst, expose more active sites, enhance the conductivity of the material, and accelerate the interfacial electron transfer, thereby further promoting the ENO3RR performance. This Cu/NiO-NF composite exhibits a high NH3 yield of 0.6 mmol h-1 cm-2 and up to 97.81% faradaic efficiency at the optimal applied potential of -1.0 V (vs. RHE) in a concentration of 0.1 M NO3--containing 0.1 M PBS. Furthermore, it demonstrates excellent electrochemical cycle stability. This work provides insights into the rational design and fabrication of ENO3RR electrocatalysts for potential electrocatalytic applications.

RESUMO

Motion sickness (MS) is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system caused by abnormal exercise with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and drowsiness. More than 90% of the human population has experienced different degrees of MS. At present, anticholinergics, antihistamines, and sympathomimetic drugs are used for treating MS, but these drugs generally have some adverse reactions and are not suitable for all people. Therefore, it is necessary to develop anti-MS drugs that have high efficiency and no adverse effects. Previous studies have found that Chroogomphus rutilus polysaccharide (CRP) is effective at preventing and treating MS in rats and mice. However, its mechanism of action is not clear. To clarify whether the CRP has anti-MS effects in mice, and to clarify its mechanism, we performed behavioral, biochemical, and morphological tests in a Kunming mouse model. Our results indicate that CRPs can significantly relieve the symptoms of MS, and their effect is equivalent to that of scopolamine, a commonly used anti-MS medicine. Our results indicate that CRPs may directly act on the gastrointestinal chromaffin cells to inhibit the synthesis and release of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) and thus reduce the signal from the gastrointestinal tract.

RESUMO

AIMS: The global increased expression of Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) has been detected in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients, however, its roles in NAFLD and the mechanism remain largely unclear. The goal of this study is to investigate the effect and mechanism of Igfbp7 using a zebrafish NAFLD model. MAIN METHODS: The igfbp7-/- null zebrafish mutant and the Igfbp7 liver overexpressed (LOE) transgenic zebrafish based on Gal4/UAS system were generated by CRISPR/Cas9 and Tol2 transgenic technique, respectively. The zebrafish NAFLD models in wildtypes, igfbp7-/- mutants and Igfbp7 LOE fishes have been established by high-fat diet feeding. The Igfbp7 dynamic expression and its effects on NAFLD progression have been detected and analyzed in both human NAFLD patients and zebrafish models. And the potential mechanism has been investigated through transcriptome analysis and subsequent detection and verification. KEY FINDINGS: High Igfbp7 levels in NASH and fibrosis stages have been detected in liver tissues of both human NAFLD patients and zebrafish models. Depletion of Igfbp7 significantly alleviated liver steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis, whereas liver specific Igfbp7 overexpression dramatically exacerbated liver fibrosis in zebrafish NAFLD model. The hepatic iron deposition, lipid peroxidation products, and ferroptosis-related index were also significantly reduced at the NASH stage in the absence of Igfbp7. Igfbp7 promotes NAFLD progression through regulating ferroptosis, and Ncoa4-mediated ferritinophagy may be the pathway of Igfbp7-regulated ferroptosis. SIGNIFICANCE: Igfbp7 is confirmed as an important regulator in NAFLD progression. Depleting Igfbp7 effectively alleviates zebrafish NAFLD progression by inhibiting hepatic ferroptosis, suggesting a novel potential target for NAFLD treatment.

RESUMO

Objective: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is linked to an unfavorable prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Here, we aimed to develop an EMT gene signature for OSCC prognosis. Methods: In TCGA dataset, prognosis-related EMT genes with p < 0.05 were screened in OSCC. An EMT gene signature was then conducted with LASSO method. The efficacy of this signature in predicting prognosis was externally verified in the GSE41613 dataset. Correlations between this signature and stromal/immune scores and immune cell infiltration were assessed by ESTIMATE and CIBERSORT algorithms. GSEA was applied for exploring significant signaling pathways activated in high- and low-risk phenotypes. Expression of each gene was validated in 40 paired OSCC and normal tissues via RT-qPCR. Results: A prognostic 9-EMT gene signature was constructed in OSCC. High risk score predicted poorer clinical outcomes than low risk score. ROCs confirmed the well performance on predicting 1-, 3- and 5-year survival. Multivariate cox analysis revealed that this signature was independently predictive of OSCC prognosis. The well predictive efficacy was validated in the GSE41613 dataset. Furthermore, this signature was distinctly related to stromal/immune scores and immune cell infiltration in OSCC. Distinct pathways were activated in two subgroups. After validation, AREG, COL5A3, DKK1, GAS1, GPX7 and PLOD2 were distinctly upregulated and SFRP1 was downregulated in OSCC than normal tissues. Conclusion: Our data identified and verified a robust EMT gene signature in OSCC, which provided a novel clinical tool for predicting prognosis and several targets against OSCC therapy.

RESUMO

Selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is recognized as one of the most promising reactions for the valorization of biomass. Precise activation of C─O bonds of glycerol molecule is the key step to realize the high yield of catalytic conversion. Here, a Pt-loaded Nb-W composite oxides with crystallographic shear phase for the precise activation and cleavage of secondary C─O (C(2)─O) bonds are first reported. The developed Nb14 W3 O44 with uniform structure possesses arrays of W-O-Nb active sites that totally distinct from individual WOx or NbOx species, which is superior to the adsorption and activation of C(2)─O bonds. The Nb14 W3 O44 support with rich reversible redox couples also promotes the electron feedback ability of Pt and enhances its interaction with Pt nanoparticles, resulting in high activity for H2 dissociation and hydrogenation. All these favorable factors confer the Pt/Nb14 W3 O44 excellent performance for selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-PDO with the yield of 75.2% exceeding the record of 66%, paying the way for the commercial development of biomass conversion. The reported catalysts or approach can also be adopted to create a family of Nb-W metal composite oxides for other catalytic reactions requiring selective C─O bond activation and cleavage.

RESUMO

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a limiting reaction for highly efficient water electrolysis. Thus, the development of cost-effective and highly efficient OER catalysts is the key to large-scale water electrolysis for hydrogen production. Herein, by using an interfacial engineering strategy, a unique nanoflower-like Fe1-xNix(PO3)2/Ni2P/NF heterostructure with abundant heterogeneous interfaces is successfully fabricated. The catalyst exhibits excellent OER catalytic activity in alkaline fresh water and alkaline natural seawater at high current densities, which only, respectively, requires overpotentials of 318 and 367 mV to drive 1000 mA cm-2 in fresh water and natural seawater both containing 1 M KOH. Furthermore, Fe1-xNix(PO3)2/Ni2P/NF demonstrates excellent durability, which can basically remain stable for 80 h during the electrocatalytic OER processes, respectively, in alkaline fresh water and natural seawater. This work provides a new construction strategy for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts for OER at high current densities both in alkaline fresh water and in natural seawater.

RESUMO

Problems, such as broken screws, broken rods, and cage subsidence after clinical spinal fusion surgery affect the success rate of fusion surgery and the fixation effect of fusion segments, and these problems still affect the treatment and postoperative recovery of patients. In this study, we used the biomechanical finite element analysis method to analyze and study the fixation effect of three kinds of spinal internal fixation systems on L4-L5 lumbar spine segments in percutaneous endoscopic posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PE-PLIF). The three different fixation systems compared in this study include bilateral pedicle screw fixation (M1); bilateral pedicle screw with cross-link fixation (M2); bilateral pedicle screws with double bent rods fixation (M3). The internal fixation systems with different structures were analyzed with the help of Hypermesh, and Abaqus. It was found that the internal fixation system with double bent rods reduced screw stresses by 23.8 and 22.2% in right and left axial rotation than the traditional bilateral pedicle screw system, while titanium rod stresses were reduced by 9.6, 3.7, 9.6, and 2.9% in flexion, left and right lateral bending, and right axial rotation, respectively, and L5 upper endplate stresses were reduced by 35.5, 18.9, 38.4, 10.2, and 48.3% in flexion, left and right lateral bending, and left and right axial rotation, respectively. The spinal range of motion (ROM) of the M3 internal fixation system was less than that of the M1 and M2 internal fixation systems in left lateral bending, left lateral rotation, and right axial rotation, and the intact vertebral ROM was reduced by 93.7, 94.9, and 90.9%, respectively. The double bent rod structure of the spinal internal fixation system has better biomechanical properties, which can effectively reduce the risk of screw breakage, loosening, cage subsidence, and endplate collapse after fusion surgery.

RESUMO

Dopamine is not only a widely used commodity pharmaceutical for treating neurological diseases but also a highly attractive base for advanced carbon materials. Lignin, the waste from the lignocellulosic biomass industry, is the richest source of renewable aromatics on earth. Efficient production of dopamine direct from lignin is a highly desirable target but extremely challenging. Here, we report an innovative strategy for the sustainable production of dopamine hydrochloride from softwood lignin with a mass yield of 6.4 wt.%. Significantly, the solid dopamine hydrochloride is obtained by a simple filtration process in purity of 98.0%, which avoids the tedious separation and purification steps. The approach begins with the acid-catalyzed depolymerization, followed by deprotection, hydrogen-borrowing amination, and hydrolysis of methoxy group, transforming lignin into dopamine hydrochloride. The technical economic analysis predicts that this process is an economically competitive production process. This study fulfills the unexplored potential of dopamine hydrochloride synthesis from lignin.

RESUMO

Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the most well-studied and promising green carbon sources. The fullest utilization of lignocellulosic biomass in hydrogen-free and mild conditions to produce phenolic monomers while preserving cellulose-rich pulps is challenging and has far-reaching significance. Here, we report an innovative strategy to convert lignocellulosic biomass into lignin oils and cellulose-rich pulps without exogenous hydrogen under mild conditions over a Pt/NiAl2O4 catalyst. In this process, the structural hydrogens in hemicellulose acted as a hydrogen source to realize the fractionation and depolymerization of lignin into phenolic monomers while keeping the cellulose intact, which is named self-hydrogen supplied catalytic fractionation (SCF). By using water as a solvent, the theoretical yield of phenolic monomers (46.6 wt %, with propyl(ethyl) end-chained syringol and guaiacol as main products) is achieved at 140 °C for 24 h, with 90% cellulose intact in birch sawdust. This H2-free process can be extended to other biomass (hardwood, softwood, and grass) and can be scaled up. The Pt/NiAl2O4 catalyst also shows good stability in recycling as well as regeneration treatment. This work provides a new strategy to achieve high utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for sustainable biorefinery by using water as a solvent without exogenous hydrogen under mild conditions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of hemodialysis combined with hemoperfusion with acupuncture on calcium-phosphorus metabolism disorder (CPMD) of patients who had received maintenance hemodialysis and its effect on intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and nutritional status. METHODS: Data from 142 patients who were treated and given maintenance hemodialysis in Baoji People's Hospital from March 2018 to February 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients treated with hemodialysis and acupuncture-moxibustion adjuvant therapy were enrolled into the control group (n=58), while those treated with hemoperfusion in addition to hemodialysis and acupuncture-moxibustion adjuvant therapy were enrolled into the research group (n=84). The two groups were compared in terms of changes in iPTH, calcium-phosphorus product, serum calcium (Ca), serum phosphorus (P), ß2 microglobulin (ß2-MG), serum albumin (Alb), creatinine (Scr) and urea nitrogen (BUN). The clinical efficacy in the two groups was compared after therapy, and the two groups were also compared in the improvement of immune function-related indexes (IgG and IgM) and the changes of nutrition-related indexes (Alb, prealbumin (PA) and hemoglobin (Hb)) before and after treatment. A risk prediction model was constructed based on LASSO regression to evaluate the predictive value of the risk score for efficacy of patients. RESULTS: After treatment, the research group presented significantly lower levels of P, iPTH, and calcium-phosphorus product than the control group, but a significantly higher Ca level than the control group (all P<0.05). In addition, after treatment, the research group showed significantly lower levels of ß2-MG, Scr and BUN but a higher Alb level than the control group (all P<0.05). After treatment, the research group had a greater improvement in immune function-related indexes (IgG and IgM) than the control group (all P<0.05), while the control group had significantly decreased Alb, PA and Hb after treatment (all P<0.05), but the levels of these in the research group did not change greatly (all P>0.05). Risk scoring formula was constructed: risk score = (dialysis time * 0.057123881) + (Ca * -0.100413548) + (P * 0.100419363) + (calcium and phosphorus product * 0.03872268) + (iPTH * 0.000358779). According to inter-group comparison of risk score, the Improvement group got a lower risk score than the Non-improvement group (P<0.0001). Moreover, according to ROC curve-based analysis, the area under the curve of risk score in predicting the efficacy of patients was 0.991. CONCLUSION: Hemodialysis combined with acupuncture and blood perfusion can control the immune regulation by increasing the blood calcium content without affecting nutritional status, but it has no significant effect on the efficacy in patients.

RESUMO

Aim: To explore the feasibility of Omaha system theory in the care of children with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which may provide a practical basis for the continuous nursing of DCM children. Methods: A total of 1,392 records describing symptoms, signs, and nursing interventions were extracted from the medical records of 76 children suffered from DCM. Content analysis method was used to find out existent nursing problems, make precise nursing plans, and take corresponding nursing measurements according to the medical records of DCM children. Cross-mapping method was utilized to compare the conceptual consistency of the medical records and Omaha system (problem classification and intervention subsystems). Results: Of the total 1,392 records, 1,094 (78.59%) were complete consistency, while 245 (17.60%) were partial consistency, and 53 (3.81%) were inconsistency with the Omaha system concepts. The concept matching degree of medical records and Omaha system was approximately 96.19%. Conclusions: The Omaha system may be an effective nursing language for Chinese DCM children, which may be useful to guide nurses in the care of DCM. Further well-design studies need to fully evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the Omaha system in nursing children with DCM.

RESUMO

Polaritons - material excitation coupled with light - are thought to hold the potential for the extreme control of light down to the atomic length scale because of their high field confinement and sub-wavelength scales. For practical applications, it is essential but still a formidable challenge to manipulate polaritons with high efficiency and a wide tunable range. These obstacles may be overcome by the topology of polaritons. In photonic systems composed of graphene/α-MoO3 heterostructures, the topology of the hybrid polariton characterized by the isofrequency curve can transform from open hyperbolas to closed ellipse-like curves, driven by the carrier concentrations of graphene. The electronic tunability of such topological polaritons offers a unique platform for two-dimensional energy transfer. Here, by introducing local gates to obtain a tunable spatial carrier density profile in the graphene/α-MoO3 heterostructure, the phase of the polariton is predicted to be efficiently tuned from 0 to 2π in situ. Remarkably, the reflectance and transmittance through the gap between local gates can also be modulated in situ from 0 to 1 with high efficiency, where the device length can be less than 100 nm. The modulation is achieved owing to the dramatic changes in the wave vector of polaritons near the topological transition point. The proposed structures not only have direct applications in two-dimensional optics such as total reflectors, phase (amplitude) modulators, and optical switches but also can serve as an important component for complex nano-optical devices.
