RESUMO
OBJECTIVES: Myocarditis, a health-threatening heart disease, is attracting increasing attention. This systematic study was conducted to study the prevalence of disease through the trends of incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) over the last 30 years, which would be helpful for the policymakers to better the choices for reasonable decisions. METHODS: The global, regional, and national burdens of myocarditis from 1990-2019 were analyzed by using the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database. This study on myocarditis produced new findings according to age, sex, and Social-Demographic Index (SDI) by investigating DALYs, age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized death rate (ASDR), and corresponding estimated annual percentage change (EAPC). RESULTS: The number of myocarditis incidence increased by 62.19%, from 780,410 cases in 1990 to 1,265,770 cases in 2019. The ASIR decreased by 4.42% (95%CI, from -0.26% to -0.21%) over the past 30 years. The number of deaths from myocarditis increased by 65.40% from 19,618 in 1990 to 324,490 in 2019, but the ASDR was relatively stable over the investigated period. ASDR increased in low-middle SDI regions (EAPC=0.48; 95%CI, 0.24 to 0.72) and decreased in low SDI regions (EAPC=-0.97; 95%CI, from -1.05 to -0.89). The age-standardized DALY rate decreased by 1.19% (95%CI, from -1.33% to -1.04%) per year. CONCLUSIONS: Globally, the ASIR and DALY for myocarditis decreased and the ASDR was stable over the past 30 years. The risk of incidences and death cases increased with age. Measures should be taken to control the risk of myocarditis in high-burden regions. Medical supplies should be improved in the high-middle SDI regions and middle SDI regions to reduce the deaths from myocarditis in these regions.

Multiple myeloma (MM) remains incurable due to relapse, although the use of proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory drugs, CD38-targeting antibodies, and autologous stem cell transplantation (auto-SCT) significantly improve the clinical outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed MM. In recent years, the introduction of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR T-cell) therapy has brought hope to patients with refractory and relapsed MM. The graft-versus-myeloma effect of allogeneic SCT provides the possibility for curing a subset of MM patients. In this review, we summarize the recent advances and challenges of cellular immunotherapies for MM, focusing on auto-SCT, allogeneic SCT, and CAR T-cell approaches. We also discuss future directions, and propose a specific algorithm for cellular therapies for MM and probability of minimal residual disease-directed therapy.

We performed a retrospective analysis to investigate dynamic peri-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) minimal/measurable residual disease (MRD) on outcomes in patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). A total of 271 patients were enrolled and classified into three groups: unchanged negative MRD pre- and post-HSCT group (group A), post-MRD non-increase group (group B), and post-MRD increase group (group C). The patients in group B and group C experienced a higher cumulative incidence of relapse (CIR) (42% vs. 71% vs. 16%, P<0.001) and lower leukemia-free survival (LFS) (46% vs. 21% vs. 70%, P<0.001) and overall survival (OS) (50% vs. 28% vs. 72%, P<0.001) than in group A, but there was no significant difference in non-relapse mortality (NRM) among three groups (14% vs. 12% vs. 8%, P=0.752). Multivariate analysis showed that dynamic peri-HSCT MRD was associated with CIR (HR=2.392, 95% CI, 1.816-3.151, P<0.001), LFS (HR=1.964, 95% CI, 1.546-2.496, P<0.001) and OS (HR=1.731, 95% CI, 1.348-2.222, P<0.001). We also established a risk scoring system based on dynamic peri-HSCT MRD combined with remission status pre-HSCT and onset of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). This risk scoring system could better distinguish CIR (c=0.730) than that for pre-HSCT MRD (c=0.562), post-HSCT MRD (c=0.616) and pre- and post-MRD dynamics (c=0.648). Our results confirm the outcome predictive value of dynamic peri-HSCT MRD either alone or in combination with other variables for patients with T-ALL.

Corchorus olitorius L. is grown in Taiwan during summer. Tender leaves are crushed and washed by running water before eating. Five fractions including crude phenolic extracts (using 80 per cent aqueous acetone) of whole plant, leaf, stem, washed leaf (WL) and dried water washing material (WW) were used in this study. Linoleic acid autoxidation inhibitions on all fractions were higher than that on α-tocopherol. Except for WL and WW, other fractions also showed DPPH radical scavenging efficiency. The effect of all fractions on the regulation of inflammatory responses in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated J774A.1 macrophage cells was investigated. All fractions diminished LPS-induced protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). Nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE(2)), downstream products, were also suppressed in dose-dependent manners, except for WL and WW. Oxidative modification and loss of leaf phenolics after kneading and washing greatly affected DPPH radical scavenging and inflammatory responses.

The food security issue was addressed by the development of "modern agriculture" in the last century. But food safety issues and environment degradation were the consequences suffered as a result. Climate change has been recognized as the result of release of stored energy in fossil fuel into the atmosphere. Homogeneous crop varieties, machinery, pesticides and fertilizers are the foundation of uniform commodities in modern agriculture. Fossil fuels are used to manufacture fertilizers and pesticides as well as the energy source for agricultural machinery, thus characterizes modern agriculture. Bio-fuel production and the possibility of the agriculture system as a form of energy input are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the results of total knee arthroplasty undertaken for Charcot arthritis patients. METHODS: Between September 2000 and January 2007, 4 consecutive patients (2 men and 2 women; 5 TKAs) with Charcot arthritic knees were treated. At the time of surgery, the mean age of the patients was 67.3 years (64 to 72 years). One had bilateral and 2 had unilateral TKA and one had ipsilateral total hip and total knee arthroplasty. The mean knee society score before operation was 33.75 points. RESULTS: The mean follow-up was 65 months (19 to 96 months). The mean knee society score post-operation had improved to 95.25 points in 5 TKAs with no occurrence of infection and loosening. All 4 patients were very satisfactory with the clinical results at the last follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The midterm follow-up data indicated that total knee arthroplasty to treat Charcot arthritis could get good clinical results. The postoperative results in Charcot arthritis were closed related with the proper prosthesis and surgical technique.

We report a genetic recombination map for Sorghum of 2512 loci spaced at average 0.4 cM ( approximately 300 kb) intervals based on 2050 RFLP probes, including 865 heterologous probes that foster comparative genomics of Saccharum (sugarcane), Zea (maize), Oryza (rice), Pennisetum (millet, buffelgrass), the Triticeae (wheat, barley, oat, rye), and Arabidopsis. Mapped loci identify 61.5% of the recombination events in this progeny set and reveal strong positive crossover interference acting across intervals of =50 cM. Significant variations in DNA marker density are related to possible centromeric regions and to probable chromosome structural rearrangements between Sorghum bicolor and S. propinquum, but not to variation in levels of intraspecific allelic richness. While cDNA and genomic clones are similarly distributed across the genome, SSR-containing clones show different abundance patterns. Rapidly evolving hypomethylated DNA may contribute to intraspecific genomic differentiation. Nonrandom distribution patterns of multiple loci detected by 357 probes suggest ancient chromosomal duplication followed by extensive rearrangement and gene loss. Exemplifying the value of these data for comparative genomics, we support and extend prior findings regarding maize-sorghum synteny-in particular, 45% of comparative loci fall outside the inferred colinear/syntenic regions, suggesting that many small rearrangements have occurred since maize-sorghum divergence. These genetically anchored sequence-tagged sites will foster many structural, functional and evolutionary genomic studies in major food, feed, and biomass crops.
