RESUMO

A very rare case is presented of a giant teratoma malignum of the sacrococcygeal area in a fetus which caused obstetric difficulties. Attention in called to the necessity of differentiating such teratoma from other tumors in the region of the body, which is important for the decision concerning further prognosis and the time and mode of pregnancy termination. Good prognosis in cases of teratoma in this area suggests termination of pregnancy by ceasarean section. The newborn with teratoma was referred on the second day of life to surgical department where the tumour was removed radically without damaging the nearly organs. The need for more accurate prenatal diagnosis and labour management in specialised centres with available facilities for paediatric surgery are suggested.

RESUMO

Rudolf Weigl started his study on typhus fever still in time of the Ist World War, and developed them in 1920 as the member of Military Sanitary committee. The study has been carried out for all period of 20 years between the world Wars. As the greatest achievement of Weigl in field of microbiology there should be recognized the use for the first time a bacterial culture in a living organism, and then production of efficient typhus fever vaccine. Of great importance there was a production of vaccine for succeeding armies occupying Lvov; Soviet and German. Weigl's Institute was a harbour for numerous crowds of educated Poles, who--thanks to being employed at the institute--were protected against repressive measures from German invader. Occasionally the institut was supplying also Polish population with vaccines.

RESUMO

It has passed 150th birth anniversary of a great, Italian Obstetrician Eduardo Porro, author of a cesarean section technique consisted of uterine corpus amputation and suturing of the cervix stump into the abdominal wall incision. Eduardo Porro was born in 1842 in Padwa. In 1876, he became the Head of Obstetrics Department in Pawia, and since 1882, the Head of Midwifery School in Milano. He died on May 25th, 1901. That original cesarean section method was introduced by him in 1876. Its main idea was exsection of the uterus, infected at the time of labor. The operation was also performed because of other reasons, such as: wide uterine ruptures, osteomalation, spacions vaginal cicatrization, and uterine atony. In the second part of the 18th century, maternal mortality following so called, classical cesarean section was nearly 100 percent. Introducing the Porro's operative technique decreased maternal mortality to 58%. This method aroused an interest of cesarean section technique improvement at all. The twilight, of the Porro's operation took place in the 1920s as the new method appeared, elaborated by Adolf Kehrer--uterine lower segment transverse incision.

RESUMO

The article presents a description of a Cesarean section in 1821, which is an authentic source documenting the first Cesarean section in Poland. Until now it has been accepted that the first documented Cesarean sections were performed in 1826, 1836 or 1870. The article points that the technique of the operation presented was similar to generally accepted procedures of abdominal operative delivery.
