RESUMO

The understanding of activated sludge microbial status and roles is imperative for improving and enhancing the performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, we conducted a deep analysis of activated sludge microbial communities across five compartments (inflow, effluent, and aerobic, anoxic, anaerobic tanks) over temporal scales, employing high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA amplicons and metagenome data. Clearly discernible seasonal patterns, exhibiting cyclic variations, were observed in microbial diversity, assembly, co-occurrence network, and metabolic functions. Notably, summer samples exhibited higher α-diversity and were distinctly separated from winter samples. Our analysis revealed that microbial community assembly is influenced by both stochastic processes (66%) and deterministic processes (34%), with winter samples demonstrating more random assembly compared to summer. Co-occurrence patterns were predominantly mutualistic, with over 96% positive correlations, and summer networks were more organized than those in winter. These variations were significantly correlated with temperature, total phosphorus and sludge volume index. However, no significant differences were found among microbial community across five compartments in terms of ß diversity. A core community of keystone taxa was identified, playing key roles in eight nitrogen and eleven phosphorus cycling pathways. Understanding the assembly mechanisms, co-occurrence patterns, and functional roles of microbial communities is essential for the design and optimization of biotechnological treatment processes in WWTPs.

The r-strategy pests are very challenging to effectively control because of their rapid population growth and strong resurgence potential and are more prone to developing pesticide resistance. As a typical r-strategy pest, the cosmopolitan cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, seriously impacts the growth and production of cucurbits and cotton. The present study developed a SPc/double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)/botanical strategy to enhance the control efficacy of A. gossypii. The results demonstrated that the expression of two chitin pathway genes AgCHS2 and AgHK2 notably changed in A. gossypii after treated by three botanical pesticides, 1% azadirachtin, 1% matrine, and 5% eucalyptol. SPc nanocarrier could significantly enhance the environmental stability, cuticle penetration, and interference efficiency of dsRNA products. The SPc/dsRNA/botanical complex could obviously increase the mortality of A. gossypii in both laboratory and greenhouse conditions. This study provides an eco-friendly control technique for enhanced mortality of A. gossypii and lower application of chemical pesticides. Given the conservative feature of chitin pathway genes, this strategy would also shed light on the promotion of management strategies against other r-strategy pests using dsRNA/botanical complex nanopesticides.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the third gasotransmitter discovered, regulates a variety of physiological functions. Whether H2S alleviates skeletal muscle ageing by regulating autophagy has not been reported. METHODS: Mice were administered 150 mg/kg/day of D-galactose (D-gal), and C2C12 myotubes were cultured in 20 g/L D-gal to induce ageing. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) was employed as an exogenous donor in the treatment group. The intracellular concentration of H2S was quantified by the 7-azido-4-methylcoumarin fluorescence probe. The proteins involved in the ubiquitin-mediated degradation of AMPKα1 were detected by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP). S-sulfhydration of USP5 was tested by a biotin-switch assay. Associated proteins were analysed by western blot. RESULTS: NaHS was found to effectively restore the H2S content in both ageing gastrocnemius (+91.89%, P < 0.001) and C2C12 myotubes (+27.55%, P < 0.001). In comparison to the D-gal group, NaHS was observed to increase the mean cross-sectional area of muscle fibres (+44.91%, P < 0.001), to decrease the collagen volume fraction of gastrocnemius (-81.32%, P = 0.001) and to reduce the ß-galactosidase-positive area of C2C12 myotubes (-28.74%, P < 0.001). NaHS was also found to reverse the expression of muscle atrophy F box protein (MAFbx), muscle-specific RING finger protein 1 (MuRF1), Cyclin D1 and p21 in the ageing gastrocnemius tissue (MAFbx: -31.73%, P = 0.008; MuRF1: -32.37%, P = 0.003; Cyclin D1: +45.34%, P = 0.010; p21: -25.53%, P = 0.022) and C2C12 myotubes (MAFbx: -16.38%, P < 0.001; MuRF1: -16.45%, P = 0.003; Cyclin D1: +40.23%, P < 0.001; p21: -35.85%, P = 0.026). The AMPKα1-ULK1 pathway was activated and autophagy was up-regulated in NaHS-treated gastrocnemius tissue (p-AMPKα1: +61.61%, P = 0.018; AMPKα1: +30.64%, P = 0.010; p-ULK1/ULK1: +85.87%, P = 0.005; p62: -29.07%, P < 0.001; Beclin1: +24.75%, P = 0.007; light chain 3 II/I [LC3 II/I]: +55.78%, P = 0.004) and C2C12 myotubes (p-AMPKα1: +77.49%, P = 0.018; AMPKα1: +26.18%, P = 0.022; p-ULK1/ULK1: +38.34%, P = 0.012; p62: -9.02%, P = 0.014; Beclin1: +13.36%, P < 0.001; LC3 II/I: +79.38%, P = 0.017; autophagy flux: +24.88%, P = 0.034) compared with the D-gal group. The effects of NaHS on autophagy were comparable to those of acadesine and LYN-1604, and chloroquine could reverse its effects on ageing. LC-MS/MS and Co-IP experiments demonstrated that USP5 is a deubiquitinating enzyme of AMPKα1. Following the knockdown of USP5, the activation of AMPKα1 was decreased (p-AMPKα1: -42.10%, P < 0.001; AMPKα1: -43.93%, P < 0.001), autophagy was inhibited (p-ULK1/ULK1: -27.51, P = 0.001; p62: +36.00, P < 0.001; Beclin1: -22.15%, P < 0.001) and NaHS lost its ability to up-regulate autophagy. NaHS was observed to restore the expression (gastrocnemius: +62.17%, P < 0.001; C2C12 myotubes: +37.51%, P = 0.003) and S-sulfhydration (+53.07%, P = 0.009) of USP5 and reduce the ubiquitination of AMPKα1. CONCLUSIONS: H2S promotes the deubiquitination of AMPKα1 by increasing the expression and S-sulfhydration of USP5, thereby up-regulating autophagy and alleviating skeletal muscle ageing.

PURPOSE: To compare the repair effects of Haiao oral biofilm alone or in combination with allogeneic bone graft on bone defects after jaw bone cyst surgery. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 105 patients with bone defects after jaw bone cyst surgery who were admitted to Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University from November 2020 to July 2022. According to the random number table methods, the patients were divided into three groups: Haiao membrane group, allogeneic bone graft group and combination group. Among them, Haiao membrane group(35 patients) were repaired using Haiao oral biofilm; allogeneic bone group(35 patients) using allogeneic bone, while combined group (35 patients) using a combination of Haiao oral biofilm and allogeneic bone graft. The clinical basic data of three groups of patients were compared, including the healing effect at the incision, bone density at the bone defect, bone resorption and attachment loss. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 22.0 software package. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in general clinical data among the three groups (P>0.05). The postoperative restoration effect of gingival soft tissue morphology in combined group was significantly better than that in Haiao membrane group and allogeneic bone graft group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in bone density at the bone defect site among the three groups before treatment(P>0.05); 6 and 12 months after treatment, the bone density of the three groups was significantly improved (P<0.05), and combined group was significantly higher than the other groups(P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the vertical and lingual bone resorption levels among the three groups before treatment(P>0.05); 6 and 12 months after treatment, the vertical and lingual bone resorption levels of the three groups were significantly reduced (P<0.05), and combined group were significantly lower than the other groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in attachment loss among the three groups before treatment(P>0.05); 6 and 12 months after treatment, the attachment loss of the three groups decreased(P<0.05), and combined group was significantly lower than the other groups(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The combination of Haiao oral biofilm and allogeneic bone graft has good repair effect in the treatment of bone defects after jaw bone cyst surgery, which is beneficial for the recovery of gingival soft tissue, improvement of bone density, reduction of bone resorption and attachment loss.

The separation and purification of chemical raw materials, particularly neutral compounds with similar physical and chemical properties, represents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we introduce a class of water-soluble macrocycle compound, calix[2]azolium[2]benzimidazolone (H), comprising two azolium and two benzimidazolone subunits. The heterocycle subunits form a hydrophobic binding pocket that enables H1 to encapsulate a series of neutral guests in water with 1:1 or 2:1 stoichiometry, including aldehydes, ketones, and nitrile compounds. The host-guest complexation in the solid state was further confirmed through X-ray crystallography. Remarkably, H1 was shown to be a nonporous adaptive crystal material to separate valeraldehyde from the mixture of valeraldehyde/2-methylbutanal/pentanol with high selectivity and recyclability in the solid states. This work not only demonstrates that azolium-based macrocycles are promising candidates for the encapsulation of organic molecules but also shows the potential application in separation science.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the interrelationships between structural and functional changes as well as the potential neurotransmitter profile alterations in drug-naïve benign childhood epilepsy with central-temporal spikes (BECTS) patients. METHODS: Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) and resting-state functional MRI data from 20 drug-naïve BECTS patients and 33 healthy controls (HCs) were acquired. Parallel independent component analysis (P-ICA) was used to identify covarying components among gray matter volume (GMV) maps and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) maps. Furthermore, we explored the spatial correlations between GMV/fALFF changes derived from P-ICA and neurotransmitter maps in JuSpace toolbox. RESULTS: A significantly positive correlation (p < 0.001) was identified between one structural component (GMV_IC6) and one functional component (fALFF_IC4), which showed significant group differences between drug-naïve BECTS patients and HCs (GMV_IC6: p < 0.01; fALFF_IC4: p < 0.001). GMV_IC6 showed increased GMV in the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, thalamus, and precentral gyrus as well as fALFF_IC4 had enhanced fALFF in the cerebellum in drug-naïve BECTS patients compared to HCs. Moreover, significant correlations between GMV alterations in GMV_IC6 and the serotonin (5HT1a: p < 0.001; 5HT2a: p < 0.001), norepinephrine (NAT: p < 0.001) and glutamate systems (mGluR5: p < 0.001) as well as between fALFF alterations in fALFF_IC4 and the norepinephrine system (NAT: p < 0.001) were detected. CONCLUSION: The current findings suggest co-altered structural/functional components that reflect the correlation of language and motor networks as well as associated with the serotonergic, noradrenergic, and glutamatergic neurotransmitter systems. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The relationship between anatomical brain structure and intrinsic neural activity was evaluated using a multimodal fusion analysis and neurotransmitters which might provide an important window into the multimodal neural and underlying molecular mechanisms of benign childhood epilepsy with central-temporal spikes. KEY POINTS: Structure-function relationships in drug-naïve benign childhood epilepsy with central-temporal spikes (BECTS) patients were explored. The interrelated structure-function components were found and correlated with the serotonin, norepinephrine, and glutamate systems. Co-altered structural/functional components reflect the correlation of language and motor networks and correlate with the specific neurotransmitter systems.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical symptoms of Lumbar Disc Herniation (LDH) can be effectively ameliorated through Lever Positioning Manipulation (LPM), which is closely linked to the brain's pain-regulating mechanisms. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers an objective and visual means to study how the brain orchestrates the characteristics of analgesic effects. From the perspective of multimodal MRI, we applied functional MRI (fMRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectrum (MRS) techniques to comprehensively evaluate the characteristics of the effects of LPM on the brain region of LDH from the aspects of brain structure, brain function and brain metabolism. This multimodal MRI technique provides a biological basis for the clinical application of LPM in LDH. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 60 LDH patients and 30 healthy controls, matched by gender, age, and years of education, will be enrolled in this study. The LDH patients will be divided into two groups (Group 1, n = 30; Group 2, n = 30) using a random number table method. Group 1 will receive LPM treatment once every two days, for a total of 12 times over 4 weeks. Group 2 will receive sham LPM treatment during the same period as Group 1. All 30 healthy controls will be divided into Group 3. Multimodal MRI will be performed on Group 1 and Group 2 at three time points (TPs): before LPM (TP1), after one LPM session (TP2), and after a full course of LPM treatment. The healthy controls (Group 3) will not undergo LPM and will be subject to only a single multimodal MRI scan. Participants in both Group 1 and Group 2 will be required to complete clinical questionnaires. These assessments will focus on pain intensity and functional disorders, using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scoring systems, respectively. DISCUSSION: The purpose of this study is to investigate the multimodal brain response characteristics of LDH patients after treatment with LPM, with the goal of providing a biological basis for clinical applications. RESUMO

Co-immunoprecipitation (coIP) is an experimental technique to study protein-protein interactions (PPIs). However, single-step coIP can only be used to identify the interaction between two proteins and does not solve the interaction testing of ternary complexes. Here, we present a protocol to test for the formation of ternary protein complexes in vivo or in vitro using a two-step coIP approach. We describe steps for cell culture and transfection, elution of target proteins, and two-step coIP including western blot analyses. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a debilitating and rapidly fatal neurodegenerative disease, which is characterized by the selective loss of the upper and lower motor neurons. The pathogenesis of ALS remains to be elucidated and has been connected to genetic, environmental and immune conditions. Evidence from clinical and experimental studies has suggested that the immune system played an important role in ALS pathophysiology. Autoantibodies are essential components of the immune system. Several autoantibodies directed at antigens associated with ALS pathogenesis have been identified in the serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid of ALS patients. The aim of this review is to summarize the presence and clinical significance of autoantibodies in ALS.

Due to their unique afterglow ability, long-wavelength-light rechargeable persistent luminescence (PersL) nanoparticles (PLNPs) have been emerging as an important category of imaging probes. Among them, ZnGa2O4:0.6% Cr3+ (ZGC) PLNPs have gained widespread recognition due to the ease of synthesis and uniform morphology. Unfortunately, the limited absorption arising from the low molar extinction coefficient of Cr3+ results in relatively low afterglow intensity and rapid decay after long-wavelength LED light irradiation. Herein, we discovered a strategy that boosting dye-sensitization performance was able to effectively amplify the PersL signal under white LED light. Specifically, Dil served as a highly efficient sensitizer for Cr3+, promoting the absorption of the excitation light. By adjusting the Pr dopant concentrations, ZGCP0.5 PLNPs with optimal trap densities were obtained, which showed the highest PersL intensity and dye-sensitized performance. Strikingly, ZGCP0.5-Dil PLNPs exhibited a 24.3-fold enhancement in intensity and a 2-fold prolongation of decay time over bare ZGC PLNPs through the synergy effect of optimal electron traps and dye sensitization. Photostable ZGCP0.5-Dil PLNPs enabled imaging of the HepG2 tumor and effectively guided tumor surgical resection verified by the H&E staining analysis. This strategy could be a significant reference in other dye-sensitization PLNPs to enhance longer-wavelength rechargeable PersL.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs), with abilities of infinite proliferation (self-renewal) and to differentiate into distinct cell types (pluripotency), show attenuated inflammatory response against cytokines or pathogens, which is recognized as a unique characteristic of ESCs compared with somatic cells. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear, and whether the attenuated inflammatory state is involved in ESC differentiation is completely unknown. Our recent study demonstrated that macroautophagy/autophagy-related protein ATG5 inhibits the inflammatory response of mouse ESCs (MmESCs) by promoting the degradation of BTRC/ß-TrCP1 and further the downregulation of NFKB/NF-κB signaling. In addition, maintenance of an attenuated inflammation status in MmESCs is required for their differentiation. In conclusion, ATG5 is a key regulator for the regulation of inflammatory response and differentiation of MmESCs.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of cylindrical-shaped and conical-shaped cuff catheters for airway closure using different pressure measurement methods at the lowest safe pressure and to guide the clinical application. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with endotracheal intubation admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Guangxi Medical University Cancer Hospital from December 2021 to January 2022 were enrolled. Leakage test in vitro was performed on the secretion on the patients' cuff. The needle and plunger from 20 mL syringe was separated, the syringe was sealed with adhesive, and the syringe nozzle was filled thoroughly to create a tracheal model. Consecutively, both cylindrical-shaped and conical-shaped cuff catheters were inserted into the simulated trachea, and the cuff pressure was calibrated to 20 cmH2O (1 cmH2O ≈ 0.098 kPa) before commencing the experiment. The viscosity of the secretion on the patients' cuff was classified (grade I was watery subglottic secretion, grade II was thick subglottic secretion, grade III was gel-like subglottic secretion), and the same viscosity secretion was injected into the catheter cuff. Utilizing a self-control approach, intermittent pressure measurement was initially conducted on both the cylindrical-shaped and conical-shaped cuff by improved pressure measurement method (intermittent pressure measurement group), followed by continuous pressure measurement experiment (continuous pressure measurement group). The leakage volume of the three viscosity subglottic secretions and the values of cuff pressure measurement of different shaped cuff catheters at 4, 6, 8 hours of inflation were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 180 retention samples were extracted from 24 patients with tracheal intubation during ventilation, with 90 samples in each of the two groups using different pressure measurement methods, and 30 samples of retention materials with different viscosities in each group. In the intermittent pressure measurement group, at 4 hours of inflation, all samples of secretion with grade I and grade II on cylindrical-shaped cuff leaked, while 3 samples of secretion with grade III also leaked. For conical-shaped cuff, 28 samples of secretion with grade I leaked, only 2 samples of secretion with grade II leaked, and there was no leak for secretion with grade III. At 6 hours of inflation, all samples of the three viscosity secretions on different shaped cuffs leaked. The leakage was gradually increased with the prolongation of inflation time. In the continuous pressure measurement group, at 4 hours of inflation, all samples of secretion with grade I on cylindrical-shaped cuff leaked, while 29 samples of secretion with grade II leaked, and there was no leak for secretion with grade III. For the conical-shaped cuff, 26 samples of secretion with grade I leaked, and there was no leak for secretion with grade II and grade III. At 6 hours of inflation, the conical-shaped cuff still had no leak for secretion with grade III. As the inflation time prolonged, the leakage of subglottic secretion on different shaped cuffs in both groups was gradually increased. At 8 hours of inflation, all samples experienced leakage, but the leakage of subglottic secretion on different shaped cuffs in the continuous pressure measurement group was significantly reduced as compared with the intermittent pressure measurement group [leakage for secretion with grade III (mL): 1.00 (0.00, 1.25) vs. 2.00 (1.00, 2.00) on the cylindrical-shaped cuff, 1.00 (0.00, 1.00) vs. 2.00 (2.00, 2.00) on the conical-shaped cuff, both P < 0.01]. The values of pressure measurement of cuffs with different shapes at different time points of inflation in the continuous pressure measurement group were within the set range (20-21 cmH2O). The cuff pressure at 4 hours of inflation in the intermittent pressure measurement group was significantly lower than the initial value (cmH2O: 18.3±0.6 vs. 20.0±0.0 in the cylindrical-shaped cuff, 18.4±0.6 vs. 20.0±0.0 in the conical-shaped cuff, both P < 0.01), and the cuff pressure in both shaped cuffs showed a significant decrease tendency as inflation time prolonged. However, there was no statistically significant difference in values of pressure measurement between the different shaped cuff catheters. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous pressure monitoring devices can maintain the effective sealing of conical-shaped cuff catheters at the lowest safe pressure. When using an improved pressure measurement method for intermittent pressure measurement and/or using a cylindrical cuff catheter, the target pressure should be set at 25-30 cmH2O, and the cuff pressure should be adjusted regularly.

OBJECTIVE: Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a proinflammatory cytokine. This study aims to determine whether there is a causal relationship between circulating IL-18 concentrations and the risk of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. METHODS: We collected significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with circulating IL-18 levels (p < 5 × 10-8) as instrumental variables (IVs) from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 21,758 individuals of European descent. We mainly employed the inverse-variance weighed (IVW) method of two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) analysis to estimate the causality of circulating IL-18 levels on inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. RESULTS: The IVW method results showed evidence of a causal relationship between IL-18 and the risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (OR = 1.32; 95% CI 1.15, 1.50; p < .001) and type 1 diabetes (T1D) (OR = 1.22; 95% CI 1.06, 1.42; p = .007) in individuals of European ancestry. No significant heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy for SLE and T1D was detected. The sensitivity analysis, which involved removing confounding SNP, produced similar results for SLE and T1D. The results of sensitivity analysis using leave-one-out method indicated no single SNP significantly influenced the analysis results. However, we did not find any significant findings for multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, asthma, and osteoarthritis. CONCLUSIONS: Our analyses suggest that circulating IL-18 is significantly related to SLE and T1D and may serve as a potential target for the treatment of these diseases.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), the most refractory prostate cancer, inevitably progresses and becomes unresponsive to hormone therapy, revealing a pressing unmet need for this disease. Novel agents targeting HDAC6 and microtubule dynamics can be a potential anti-CRPC strategy. METHODS: Cell proliferation was examined in CRPC PC-3 and DU-145 cells using sulforhodamine B assay and anchorage-dependent colony formation assay. Flow cytometric analysis of propidium iodide staining was used to determine cell-cycle progression. Cell-based tubulin polymerization assay and confocal immunofluorescence microscopic examination determine microtubule assembly/disassembly status. Protein expressions were determined using Western blot analysis. RESULTS: A total of 82 novel derivatives targeting HDAC6 were designed and synthesized, and Compound 25202 stood out, showing the highest efficacy in blocking HDAC6 (IC50, 3.5 nM in enzyme assay; IC50, 1.0 µM in antiproliferative assay in CRPC cells), superior to tubastatin A (IC50, 5.4 µM in antiproliferative assay). The selectivity and superiority of 25202 were validated by examining the acetylation of both α-tubulin and histone H3, detecting cell apoptosis and HDACs enzyme activity assessment. Notably, 25202 but not tubastatin A significantly decreased HDAC6 protein expression. 25202 prolonged mitotic arrest through the detection of cyclin B1 upregulation, Cdk1 activation, mitotic phosphoprotein levels, and Bcl-2 phosphorylation. Compound 25202 did not mimic docetaxel in inducing tubulin polymerization but disrupted microtubule organization. Compound 25202 also increased the phosphorylation of CDC20, BUB1, and BUBR1, indicating the activation of the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC). Moreover, 25202 profoundly sensitized cisplatin-induced cell death through impairment of cisplatin-evoked DNA damage response and DNA repair in both ATR-Chk1 and ATM-Chk2 pathways. CONCLUSION: The data suggest that 25202 is a novel selective and potent HDAC6 inhibitor. Compound 25202 blocks HDAC6 activity and interferes microtubule dynamics, leading to SAC activation and mitotic arrest prolongation that eventually cause apoptosis of CRPC cells. Furthermore, 25202 sensitizes cisplatin-induced cell apoptosis through impeding DNA damage repair pathways.

The hydrogen oxidation reaction is an important process in anion exchange membrane fuel cells with alkaline solutions. The pursuit of efficient catalysts for alkaline hydrogen oxidation has attracted considerable attention. In this study, we present a precursor route for the synthesis of a new Ir-based catalyst (Ir-Ni/NiO/C), in which Ir nanoclusters were immobilized on the generated Ni/NiO/C support derived from a metal-organic framework. The small size of Ir clusters facilitates the exposure of catalytically active sites. The electronic interplay between the Ir nanoclusters and the Ni/NiO/C support optimized the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and hydroxide binding energy (OHBE) on the surface, which is unattainable on the contrasting Ir-C, Ir-Ni/C, and Ir-NiO/C products. The optimized catalyst shows excellent mass activity for alkaline hydrogen oxidation, which is 3.1 times that of the Pt/C catalyst. This study presents a promising pathway for the development of advanced HOR catalysts.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) has proven to be an effective approach in managing the population of major invasive pests. Our previous studies showed that irradiation of Cydia pomonella males at a dosage of 366 Gy X-rays resulted in complete sterility. However, the mating competitiveness of sterilized males is significantly compromised, which can be attributed to a decline in their ability to fly. RESULTS: In this study, we examined the flight patterns of both male and female adults of C. pomonella. The results revealed significant variations in the average flight speed of both genders at different stages of maturity, with females displaying longer flight duration and covering greater distances. Effect of irradiation on the flight performance of 3-day-old male moths was further evaluated, as they demonstrated the longest flight distance. The findings indicated a significant decrease in flight distance, duration, and average speed, due to wing deformities caused by irradiation, which also limited the dispersal distance of moths in orchards, as indicated by the mark-and-recapture assay. Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed a down-regulation of flight-related genes such as Flightin, myosin heavy chain, and Distal-less following radiation exposure. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that X-ray irradiation at a radiation dose of 366 Gy has a detrimental effect on the flight ability of male C. pomonella adults. These insights not only contribute to a better understanding of how radiation sterilization diminishes the mating competitiveness of male moths, but also aid in the development and improvement of SIT practices for the effective control of C. pomonella. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Noble metal compositing is a promising method to enhance radiance intensity of persistent luminescent (PersL) nanoparticles (NPs) via surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for better tumor imaging, but it rarely unites with the pH-response strategy due to the challenge of realizing rigorous pH-responsive spatial distance control as a "button switch" of SPR. Here, ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ (ZGC) NPs as "pomegranate seeds" are cladded with sodium alginate to form nanoclusters (ZGC-SA), subsequently coated with carboxyl-rich polymers to acquire "pomegranate rind" (ZSPB) and finally decorated with 10 nm gold NPs (AuNPs) on the surface to obtain nanopomegranate structure (ZSPB@AuNPs). Though without deliberate distance control, there are plenty of "seeds" inside ZSPB@AuNPs fortunately at appropriate positions, which could be plasmon-enhanced by AuNPs. Furthermore, triggered by carboxyl protonation in subacid tumor, ZSPB@AuNPs aggregate and subsequently facilitate such plasmon enhancement effect, resulting in 4.4-fold PersL promotion at pH 5.5 (tumor microenvironment, TME) over pH 7.4 and in a maximum "tumor to normal tissue ratio" of PersL imaging signals of 125.9. Under surgical navigation of ZSPB@AuNPs, intramuscular tumors of mice could be resected without residue signals left. This nanopomegranate achieves TME pH-responsive plasmon-enhanced PersL for the first time and broadens the way for designing plasmon-enhanced PersL nanosystems.

Introduction: The coil handle orientation plays a pivotal role in the therapeutic efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). However, there is currently no consensus on the optimal individualized coil handle orientation, especially for non-motor areas. Case presentation: The present case reported a short-term effect of functional connectivity (FC)-guided rTMS with coil handle posterior-anterior 45° (PA45°) and posterior-anterior 135° (PA135°) on a patient with insomnia. Notably, in this case, the PA45° orientation was nearly perpendicular to the adjacent sulcus, while the PA135° orientation was almost parallel to it. Local brain activity and functional connectivity were assessed using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI). Additionally, motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were captured both pre and post-rTMS sessions. Findings: The coil handle orientation PA45° outperformed the PA135° in both RS-fMRI and MEP outcomes. Moreover, a 9-day rTMS treatment led to discernible improvements in symptoms of depression and anxiety, complemented by a modest enhancement in sleep quality.

Although some progress has been made in tumor treatment, gliomas remain one of the tumors that can still seriously threaten human life and health. Due to the particularity of the immune microenvironment of the central nervous system and the strong invasiveness of tumors, the treatment of gliomas remains a major challenge. Currently, researchers have explored a large number of immunotherapy programs to improve the survival and prognosis of glioma patients, including tumor vaccines, immune checkpoint inhibitors, adoptive cell transfer therapy, viral vector therapy, and genetic engineering therapy. The goal of these programs is to activate or change the immunosuppressive environment and target tumor cells through drugs, combined with surgical resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and anti-angiogenesis drugs, to achieve the purpose of treating glioma. This review briefly describes the immunosuppressive microenvironment of gliomas and summarizes recent immunotherapeutic strategies and their progress. The aim is to summarize the latest immunotherapies for the treatment of gliomas and provide new research directions.

Design and fabrication of cost-effective (pre-)catalysts are important for water splitting and metal-air batteries. In this direction, various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been investigated as pre-catalysts for oxygen evolution. However, the activation process and the complex reconstruction behaviour of these MOFs are not well understood. Herein, square-like MOF nanosheets in which carbon nanotubes were embedded were prepared by introducing an amine ligand to coordinate with Ni ions and then reacting with [Fe(CN)6]3-. The formed MOF nanosheets containing nickel and iron species were then activated by NaBH4, inducing the leaching of ligands and the formation of tiny active species in situ loaded on carbon nanotubes. The prepared catalyst shows superior oxygen evolution performance with an ultralow overpotential of 231 mV for 10 mA cm-2, a fast reaction kinetics with a small Tafel slope of 52.3 mV dec-1, and outstanding catalysis stability. The excellent electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution can be attributed to the structural advantage of in situ derived small sized active species and one-dimensional conductive networks. This work provides a new thought for the enhancement of the electrocatalytic performance of MOF materials.
