RESUMO

Developing a synthesis-free, multifunctional, and effective colorimetric assay system based on 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation is attractive yet challenging. Herein, we established a synergetic Cu2+/Cr6+-promoting strategy for TMB-based colorimetric detection of Cr6+. By introducing Cu2+, critical TMB·+···Cu(I/II)···TMB charge transfer complex (TMC) intermediates were in situ formed to reduce the activation energy of TMB oxidation, thereby accelerating Cr6+-mediated TMB oxidation. TMC intermediates also played a pivotal role in H2O2-participated TMB oxidation, clarifying the secondary responsibility of reactive oxygen species frequently caused by Fenton-like reactions. Leveraging the synergetic capacity between Cu2+ and Cr6+ for TMB oxidation, we demonstrated sensitive and specific colorimetric detections for Cr6+ with a limit of detection of 0.006 µM. With its convenient operation and rapid responsiveness, this strategy successfully enabled the practical detection of Cr6+ in real water samples. This work not only enhances the understanding of the internal acceleration mechanism in colorimetric sensing but also provides valuable opportunities to advance synthesis-free detection platforms.

RESUMO

The design of molecular functional materials with multi-step magnetic transitions has attracted considerable attention. However, the development of such materials is still infrequent and challenging. Here, a cyano-bridged square Prussian blue complex that exhibits a thermally induced four-step electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) is reported. The magnetic and spectroscopic analyses confirm this multi-step transition. Variable-temperature infrared spectrum suggested the electronic structures in each phase and a four-step transition model is proposed.

RESUMO

As a remote and non-contact stimulus, light offers the potential for manipulating the polarization of ferroelectric materials without physical contact. However, in current research, the non-contact write-read (erase) process lacks direct observation through the stable current as output signal. To address this limitation, we investigated the photoinduced polarization switching capabilities of the cyanide-bridged compound [Fe2Co] using visible light, leading to the achievement of rewritable polarization. By subjecting [Fe2Co] crystals to alternating irradiation with 785 nm and 532 nm light, the polarization changes exhibited a distinct square wave pattern, confirming the reliability of the writing and erasing processes. Initialization involved exposing specific crystal units to 532 nm light for storing "1" or "0" information, while reading was accomplished by scanning the units with 785 nm light, resulting in brief current pulses for "1" states and no current signal for "0" states. This research unveils new possibilities for optical storage systems, paving the way for efficient and rewritable data storage and retrieval technologies, such as the next-generation memories.

RESUMO

Parkinson's disease (PD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are the two chronic inflammatory diseases that are increasingly affecting millions of people worldwide, posing a major challenge to public health. PD and IBD show similarities in epidemiology, genetics, immune response, and gut microbiota. Here, we review the pathophysiology of these two diseases, including genetic factors, immune system imbalance, changes in gut microbial composition, and the effects of microbial metabolites (especially short-chain fatty acids). We elaborate on the gut-brain axis, focusing on role of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of PD and IBD. In addition, we discuss several therapeutic strategies, including drug therapy, fecal microbiota transplantation, and probiotic supplementation, and their potential benefits in regulating intestinal microecology and relieving disease symptoms. Our analysis will provide a new understanding and scientific basis for the development of more effective therapeutic strategies for these diseases.

RESUMO

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) diagnosis remains challenging without expressing critical receptors. Cancer cell membrane (CCm) coating has been extensively studied for targeted cancer diagnostics due to attractive features such as good biocompatibility and homotypic tumor-targeting. However, the present study found that widely used CCm coating approaches, such as extrusion, were not applicable for functionalizing irregularly shaped nanoparticles (NPs), such as porous silicon (PSi). To tackle this challenge, we proposed a novel approach that employs polyethylene glycol (PEG)-assisted membrane coating, wherein PEG and CCm are respectively functionalized on PSi NPs through chemical conjugation and physical absorption. Meanwhile, the PSi NPs were grafted with the bisphosphonate (BP) molecules for radiolabeling. Thanks to the good chelating ability of BP and homotypic tumor targeting of cancer CCm coating, a novel PSi-based contrast agent (CCm-PEG-89Zr-BP-PSi) was developed for targeted positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging of TNBC. The novel imaging agent showed good radiochemical purity (∼99 %) and stability (∼95 % in PBS and ∼99 % in cell medium after 48 h). Furthermore, the CCm-PEG-89Zr-BP-PSi NPs had efficient homotypic targeting ability in vitro and in vivo for TNBC. These findings demonstrate a versatile biomimetic coating method to prepare novel NPs for tumor-targeted diagnosis.

RESUMO

The current small-scale synthesis and relatively large size of Cu2O have limited its practical applications. Herein, we developed a hydrolysis strategy to prepare phase-pure Cu2O networks composed of small granules (ca. 25 nm) on a gram scale. The preparation involves in situ hydrolyzing the Hx[CuxCl2x] complexes prereduced in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF). The DMF-soluble Hx[CuxCl2x] complexes are critical for the homogeneous nucleation of CuCl seeds and subsequent hydrolysis, allowing for separate control over the nucleation and growth stages to regulate the formation of Cu2O networks. The novel Cu2O networks possess numerous exposed active sites and hierarchical porosities, conferring high catalytic activity and fast mass transfer capability. The inherent peroxidase-mimic activity of Cu2O is severely inhibited under neutral conditions but can be triggered by Cr6+, enabling the colorimetric assay of Cr6+ with the assistance of the oxidation-induced color change of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. Through density functional theory calculation, we confirmed that the attachment of Cr6+ on the Cu2O surface reduced the dissociation energy of H2O2, enhancing the enzyme-mimic activity. The colorimetric detection method demonstrated a sensitive and specific assay capability for Cr6+ (LOD = 0.095 µM). Our work offers a straightforward protocol for novel design of metal or metal-based nanomaterials for nanozymes or other applications.

RESUMO

Light-induced polarization switchable molecular materials have attracted attention for decades owing to their potential remote manipulation and ultrafast responsiveness. Here we report a valence tautomeric (VT) complex with an enantiopure chiral ligand. By a suitable choice of counter anions, a significant improvement in photoconversion has been demonstrated, leading to novel photo-responsive polarization switching materials.

RESUMO

Light, a nondestructive and remotely controllable external stimulus, effectively triggers a variety of electron-transfer phenomena in metal complexes. One prime example includes using light in molecular cyanide-bridged [FeCo] bimetallic Prussian blue analogues, where it switches the system between the electron-transferred metastable state and the system's ground state. If this process is coupled to a ferroelectric-type phase transition, the generation and disappearance of macroscopic polarization, entirely under light control, become possible. In this research, we successfully executed a nonpolar-to-polar phase transition in a trinuclear cyanide-bridged [Fe2Co] complex crystal via directional electron transfer. Intriguingly, by exposing the crystal to the wavelength of light─785 nm─without any electric field─we can drive this ferroelectric phase transition to completely depolarize the crystal, during which a measurable electric current response can be detected. These discoveries signify an important step toward the realization of fully light-controlled ferroelectric memory devices.

RESUMO

To optimize mitral valve repair outcomes, it is crucial to comprehend the predictors of functional mitral valve stenosis (FMS), to enhance preoperative assessments, and to adapt intraoperative treatment strategies. This study aimed to identify FMS risk factors, contributing valuable insights for refining surgical techniques. Among 228 selected patients, 215 underwent postoperative echocardiography follow-ups, and 36 met the FMS criteria based on a mean trans-mitral pressure gradient of >5 mmHg. Patients with FMS exhibited higher pulmonary systolic arterial pressure and increased late mortality during the follow-up. Univariable logistic regression analysis identified several risk factors for FMS, including end-stage renal disease, anterior leaflet lesion, concomitant aortic valve replacement, smaller ring size, ring type, and neochordae implantation. Conversely, resection alone and resection combined with neochordae implantation had protective effects against FMS. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that smaller ring sizes and patch repair independently predicted FMS. When focusing on degenerative mitral regurgitation, the neochordae implantation without resection in leaflet repair, emerged as an independent predictor of FMS. Surgeons should weigh the substantial impact of surgical procedures on postoperative trans-mitral pressure gradients, emphasizing preoperative evaluation and techniques such as precise ring size assessment and effective leaflet management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: High blood pressure (BP) indices, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP) predict cardiovascular diseases and mortality. However, the association of these BP indices with arterial stiffness (AS) in the normotensive population (BP < 120/80 mmHg) remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Study participants who underwent health checkups at a tertiary referred center were recruited between November 2018 to December 2019. 2129 participants were enrolled after excluding those aged <18 years old, with elevated BP, history of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and stroke, or with incomplete data. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) values were examined for evaluation of AS. Participants with higher blood pressure indices had significantly higher baPWV. Multiple linear regression revealed that all BP indices were positively associated with baPWV. According to the binary logistic regression analysis, participants in the higher SBP and MAP quartiles were significantly related to AS. The odds ratio (OR) for SBP Q2, Q3 and Q4 vs. Q1 were 6.06, 10.06 and 17.78 whereas the OR for MAP Q2, Q3 and Q4 vs. Q1 were: 5.07, 5.28 and 10.34. For DBP and PP, only participants belonging to the highest quartile were associated with AS(OR for DBP Q4 vs. Q1: 2.51; PP Q4 vs Q1: 1.94). CONCLUSIONS: BP indices were linearly related to the baPWV. Normotensive participants with higher quartiles of SBP, DBP, MAP, and PP, remained associated with increased AS. The SBP and MAP levels exhibited a more prominent relationship with AS.

RESUMO

Mesoporous silicon nanoparticles (PSi NPs) are promising platforms of nanomedicine because of their good compatibility, high payload capacities of anticancer drugs, and easy chemical modification. Here, PSi surfaces were functionalized with bisphosphonates (BP) for radiolabeling, loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) for chemotherapy, and the NPs were coated with cancer cell membrane (CCm) for homotypic cancer targeting. To enhance the CCm coating, the NP surfaces were covered with polyethylene glycol prior to the CCm coating. The effects of the BP amount and pH conditions on the radiolabeling efficacy were studied. The maximum BP was (2.27 wt%) on the PSi surfaces, and higher radiochemical yields were obtained for 99mTc (97% ± 2%) and 68Ga (94.6% ± 0.2%) under optimized pH conditions (pH = 5). The biomimetic NPs exhibited a good radiochemical and colloidal stability in phosphate-buffered saline and cell medium. In vitro studies demonstrated that the biomimetic NPs exhibited an enhanced cellular uptake and increased delivery of DOX to cancer cells, resulting in better chemotherapy than free DOX or pure NPs. Altogether, these findings indicate the potential of the developed platform for cancer treatment and diagnosis.

RESUMO

Molecular-based magnetoelectric materials are among the most promising materials for next-generation magnetoelectric memory devices. However, practical application of existing molecular systems has proven difficult largely because the polarization change is far lower than the practical threshold of the ME memory devices. Herein, we successfully obtained an [FeCo] dinuclear complex that exhibits a magnetic field-induced spin crossover process, resulting in a significant polarization change of 0.45 µC cm-2. Mössbauer spectroscopy and theoretical calculations suggest that the asymmetric structural change, coupled with electron redistribution, leads to the observed polarization change. Our approach provides a new strategy toward rationally enhancing the polarization change.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Emerging data have indicated that nephrolithiasis is possibly associated with subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD). Considering that a significant proportion of obstructive CAD in non-elderly individuals occurs in those without detectable calcium score (CACS), this study aimed to investigate whether nephrolithiasis is still associated with CAD as assessed by coronary computed tomography (CT)-derived luminal stenosis [using Gensini score (GS)]. METHODS: A total of 1170 asymptomatic adults without known CAD who underwent health examinations were recruited. Nephrolithiasis was assessed using abdominal ultrasonography (US). Individuals with a self-reported stone history, but no evidence of nephrolithiasis were excluded. The CACS and GS were measured using 256-slice coronary CT. RESULTS: Nearly half of these patients had a CACS > 0 (48.1%), and a higher prevalence of nephrolithiasis was observed than in those who had zero CACS (13.1% vs. 9.7%). However, no significant intergroup difference in GS was detected. A greater proportion of stone formers than non-stone formers had a higher risk category, whereas no significant difference was noted in Gensini category. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that the CACS independently predicted the presence of nephrolithiasis after adjustment. Importantly, we found that stone formers had a nearly threefold higher risk than non-stone formers of developing severe coronary calcification (CAC > 400). CONCLUSIONS: Nephrolithiasis was significantly associated with coronary artery calcification presence and severity, but not coronary luminal stenosis in patients without known CAD. Accordingly, the relationship between stone disease and CAD remains controversial, and additional studies are imperative to validate these findings.

RESUMO

Objective: Spontaneous iliac vein rupture (SIVR) is a rare but life-threatening condition with limited understanding regarding its clinical presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, management, and risk factors for mortality. This study aims to address this gap by providing comprehensive insights into SIVR through personal case reports and a systematic review of previous cases. Methods: We detail a case of right SIVR caused by inappropriate positioning of the stent in the inferior vena cava and systematically reviewed previous cases. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for mortality. Results: Our SIVR case was successfully managed with percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy and covered stent placement. In the systematic review, 68 patients were included in the analysis with an average age of 62.01 ± 13.25 years; 86.76% were female, 91.17% had left iliac vein rupture, 55.88% presented hemodynamic instability, 76.47% had lower abdomen or iliac fossa pain, 67.64% had deep venous thrombosis (DVT), and 32.35% had May‒Thurner syndrome (MTS). The mortality rates of conservative treatment and open surgery were 2.94% and 17.65%, respectively. All 12 patients receiving endovascular treatment survived. The factors associated with a worse outcome were younger age (52.86 ± 12.96 years, OR: 1.085, 95% CI: 1.002-1.174) and SIVR patients without DVT (OR:10.111, 95% CI: 1.637-62.443). Conclusion: This first systematic review on SIVR shows that SIVR should be highly suspected in elderly females who develop lower extremity DVT and concurrent lower abdominal pain, particularly those with a retroperitoneal mass and unstable hemodynamics. Thrombosis secondary to MTS may be the main cause of SIVR. Angiography and endovascular therapy should be prioritized for DVT patients with unexplained retroperitoneal hematoma. This study classifies SIVR into two types: iliac vein rupture alone and iliac vein rupture with DVT. These findings provide critical insights for clinicians to accurately diagnose and manage SIVR, thereby improving patient outcomes.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Uncaria rhynchophylla ([Mi] Jack) (gouteng) exerts antidepressive effects. Rhynchophylline (RH), a major component of U. rhynchophylla, exerts similar pharmacological effects to those of gouteng. Thus, RH may have antidepressive effects. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the anti-depressive effects of RH in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depressive mice. The anti-depressive mechanism of RH determined by measuring the 5-HT levels, the expressions of cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in cortex and hippocampus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The behaviors of CUMS-induced depressive mice were measured using an open field test (OFT), forced swimming test (FST), and tail suspension test (TST). 5-HT levels were measured using an ELISA kits. The expressions of BDNF and CREB were determined using western blot test. RESULTS: RH increased the frequency of rearing and grooming in the OFT and decreased the immobility time in the FST and TST. RH effectively increased the 5-HT level and BDNF and CREB expressions in the cortex and hippocampus. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that the antidepressive mechanism of RH is related to increased levels of 5-HT from regulating CREB and BDNF expressions in cortex and hippocampus.

RESUMO

In recent years, ensemble methods have shown sterling performance and gained popularity in visual tasks. However, the performance of an ensemble is limited by the paucity of diversity among the models. Thus, to enrich the diversity of the ensemble, we present the distillation approach-learning from experts (LFEs). Such method involves a novel knowledge distillation (KD) method that we present, specific expert learning (SEL), which can reduce class selectivity and improve the performance on specific weaker classes and overall accuracy. Through SEL, models can acquire different knowledge from distinct networks with various areas of expertise, and a highly diverse ensemble can be obtained afterward. Our experimental results demonstrate that, on CIFAR-10, the accuracy of the ResNet-32 increases 0.91% with SEL, and that the ensemble trained by SEL increases accuracy by 1.13%. Compared to state-of-the-art approaches, for example, DML only improves accuracy by 0.3% and 1.02% on single ResNet-32 and the ensemble, respectively. Furthermore, our proposed architecture also can be applied to ensemble distillation (ED), which applies KD on the ensemble model. In conclusion, our experimental results show that our proposed SEL not only improves the accuracy of a single classifier but also boosts the diversity of the ensemble model.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is known to cause right ventricular (RV) failure and death. Although TR is traditionally classified as primary or secondary, recently, a new class of TR called idiopathic TR has been proposed, with varying definitions among different studies. METHODS: The data were retrospectively collected for the period of January to June 2018 for 8711 patients from the patient cohort of the National Cheng Kung University Hospital echocardiography laboratory. A total of 670 patients (7.7%) with moderate-to-severe TR were included. Idiopathic TR was diagnosed strictly using a new systematic approach. RESULTS: The distribution of significant TR included 74 (11.0%) primary TR cases, 48 (7.2%) with pacemaker-related TR, 267 (39.9%) with left heart disease, 24 (3.6%) with congenital heart disease, 6 (0.9%) with RV myopathy, 105 (15.7%) with pulmonary hypertension, and 146 (21.8%) with idiopathic TR. The mean age in primary and idiopathic TR groups was older ( p = 0.004), with lower estimated pulmonary pressure ( p < 0.001), higher RV fraction area change (FAC, p < 0.001), and tricuspid annulus systolic velocity (S', p = 0.004) compared with functional TR group. Multivariate analysis showed that idiopathic TR ( p = 0.002) and primary TR ( p = 0.008) had better RV FAC than functional TR. CONCLUSION: Idiopathic TR was associated with better RV function than the other secondary TRs. Thus, idiopathic TR should be strictly defined and regarded as a distinct type of TR.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Platelet counts and mean platelet volume (MPV) are related to cardiovascular disease, but a thorough investigation into the connection between increased arterial stiffness, MPV, and platelet counts is lacking. This study aimed to explore the association of platelet count and MPV with arterial stiffness in young and middle-aged adults. METHODS: A total of 2464 participants who underwent health checkups at National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Taiwan from November 2018 to December 2019 were included. We excluded participants aged <18 or >50 years; who are pregnant; on medication for dyslipidemia; with abnormal platelet count, incomplete data, and past history of hematologic disorders. We examined the association of platelet counts and MPV values with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) levels and increased arterial stiffness. RESULTS: Platelet count was significantly higher in participants with increased arterial stiffness than in those without. The multiple linear regression model revealed that platelet counts were positively associated with baPWV levels (ß = 1.88, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.96 to 2.80). In the binary logistic regression analysis, subjects in the higher platelet counts quartiles had a higher risk of developing increased arterial stiffness (Q2 vs. Q1: odds ratio (OR): 1.54, 95% CI: 1.05 to 2.27; Q3 vs. Q1: OR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.06 to 2.33; and Q4 vs. Q1: OR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.50 to 3.30). In contrast, MPV levels were not associated with arterial stiffness. CONCLUSIONS: Platelet count in midlife was positively associated with baPWV levels. Participants in higher platelet quartiles were at risk for increased arterial stiffness.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Myocardial work is estimated from noninvasive pressure-strain loop for advanced assessment of left ventricular function. Postsystolic shortening and diastolic dyssynchrony of left ventricle were noted early in hypertension. Their novel effects on myocardial work will be illustrated in this study. METHODS: We recruited 43 newly diagnosed hypertensive patients (mean age 51.3 ±â€Š12.5 years, 55.8% men) and 32 age-matched and sex-matched healthy individuals (mean age 52.7 ±â€Š10.5 years, 37.5% men) as control. Pressure-strain loop derived myocardial work incorporated global longitudinal strain from speckle tracking echocardiography with brachial artery cuff pressure. Postsystolic strain index (PSI) was defined by the percentage of postsystolic shortening over peak strain. Diastolic dyssynchrony was assessed by standard deviation of time to peak early diastolic strain rate (TDSr-SD) of 18 segments, and maximal difference of time to peak early diastolic strain rate (TDSr-MD) between any two segments. RESULTS: After multivariate regression analysis, global myocardial work index (GWI) was independently correlated with TDSr-SD (B = -0.498, P = 0.001) and TDSr-MD (B = -0.513, P = 0.001). Global myocardial constructive work (GCW) was independently correlated with TDSr-SD (B = -0.334, P = 0.025) and TDSr-MD (B = -0.397, P = 0.007). Global myocardial wasted work (GWW) was independently correlated with PSI (B = 0.358, P = 0.019). Global myocardial work efficiency (GWE) was lower in hypertensive patients than healthy control (P = 0.001). The untreated hypertensive patients were different from the healthy individuals with higher TDSr-SD, TDSr-MD, GWI, GCW, GWW, and PSI (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the effect of diastolic dyssynchrony mainly influenced constructive work, whereas postsystolic shortening affected wasted work in early untreated hypertension.
