RESUMO

This study investigated ball release speed and performance kinematics between elite male and female cricket fast bowlers. Fifty-five kinematic parameters were collected for 20 male and 20 female elite fast bowlers. Group means were analysed statistically using an independent samples approach to identify differences. Significant differences were found between: ball release speed; run-up speed; the kinematics at back foot contact (BFC), front foot contact (FFC), and ball release (BR); and the timings between these key instants. These results indicate that the female bowlers generated less whole body linear momentum during the run-up than the males. The male bowlers also utilised a technique between BFC and FFC which more efficiently maintained linear momentum compared to the females. As a consequence of this difference in linear momentum at FFC, the females typically adopted a technique more akin to throwing where ball release speed was contributed to by both the whole body angular momentum and the large rotator muscles used to rotate the pelvis and torso segments about the longitudinal axis. This knowledge is likely to be useful in the coaching of female fast bowlers although future studies are required to understand the effects of anthropometric and strength constraints on fast bowling performance.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate whether high peak ground reaction forces and high average loading rates are necessary to bowl fast. Kinematic and kinetic bowling data were collected for 20 elite male fast bowlers. A moderate non-significant correlation was found between ball speed and peak vertical ground reaction force with faster bowlers tending to have lower peak vertical ground reaction force (r = -0.364, P = 0.114). Faster ball speeds were correlated with both lower average vertical and lower average horizontal loading rates (r = -0.452, P = 0.046 and r = -0.484, P = 0.031, respectively). A larger horizontal (braking) impulse was associated with a faster ball speed (r = 0.574, P = 0.008) and a larger plant angle of the front leg (measured from the vertical) at front foot contact was associated with a larger horizontal impulse (r = 0.706, P = 0.001). These findings suggest that there does not necessarily need to be a trade-off between maximum ball release speed and the forces exerted on fast bowlers (peak ground reaction forces and average loading rates). Furthermore, it appears that one of the key determinants of ball speed is the horizontal impulse generated at the ground over the period from front foot contact until ball release.

RESUMO

Subcutaneous tumour xenograft volumes are generally measured using callipers. This method is susceptible to inter- and intra-observer variability and systematic inaccuracies. Non-invasive 3D measurement using ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been considered, but require immobilization of the animal. An infrared-based 3D time-of-flight (3DToF) camera was used to acquire a depth map of tumour-bearing mice. A semi-automatic algorithm based on parametric surfaces was applied to estimate tumour volume. Four clay mouse models and 18 tumour-bearing mice were assessed using callipers (applying both prolate spheroid and ellipsoid models) and 3DToF methods, and validated using tumour weight. Inter-experimentalist variability could be up to 25% in the calliper method. Experimental results demonstrated good consistency and relatively low error rates for the 3DToF method, in contrast to biased overestimation using callipers. Accuracy is currently limited by camera performance; however, we anticipate the next generation 3DToF cameras will be able to support the development of a practical system. Here, we describe an initial proof of concept for a non-invasive, non-immobilized, morphology-independent, economical and potentially more precise tumour volume assessment technique. This affordable technique should maximize the datapoints per animal, by reducing the numbers required in experiments and reduce their distress.

RESUMO

The first example of Pd-catalyzed, C3-selective arylation of unprotected pyridines has been developed by employing a catalytic system consisting of Pd(OAc)(2) and 1,10-phenanthroline. This protocol provides an expeditious route to an important class of 3-arylpyridines and 3-arylpiperidines frequently found in bioactive compounds. A brief synthesis of the drug molecule (±)-preclamol is also reported.

RESUMO

There is considerable interest in the use of statistical process control (SPC) in healthcare. Although SPC is part of an overall philosophy of continual improvement, the implementation of SPC usually requires the production of control charts. However, as SPC is relatively new to healthcare practitioners and is not routinely featured in medical statistics texts/courses, there is a need to explain the issues involved in the selection and construction of control charts in practice. Following a brief overview of SPC in healthcare and preliminary issues, we use a tutorial-based approach to illustrate the selection and construction of four commonly used control charts (xmr-chart, p-chart, u-chart, c-chart) using examples from healthcare. For each control chart, the raw data, the relevant formulae and their use and interpretation of the final SPC chart are provided together with a notes section highlighting important issues for the SPC practitioner. Some more advanced topics are also mentioned with suggestions for further reading.

RESUMO

This retrospective study evaluated 11 adult patients with TMJ ankylosis treated by interpositional arthroplasty using autogenous costal cartilage grafts between 1985 and 2003. Minimum follow-up was 2 years. Basic personal data, function of TMJ and complications of operation were recorded. Mouth opening increased during operation by a mean of 25.5mm and postoperatively by a mean of 26.2mm. The procedure failed in one case with recurrent ankylosis. The remaining 10 cases had final opening ranges in excess of 30mm. Complications included one numb lower lip. There were no instances of a facial nerve or internal maxillary artery injury. Consideration is given to the width and level of gap arthroplasty, fixation of the grafts, complications at both donor and recipient sites, postoperative physical therapy, occlusal change, and the need for coronoidectomy. This study demonstrated that autogenous costal cartilage is a suitable material for interpositional arthroplasty in adults. Complications were low. The intraoral approach and the role of postoperative physical therapy appear key elements in the success of this procedure.

RESUMO

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is one of the most sophisticated forms of intravenous therapy in use today. Intravenous feeding is a life-saving technology for patients unable to maintain their nutritional status using the gastrointestinal tract. Although PN has become an integral component of patient care, the risks associated with this therapy must be weighed against the potential benefits. Comprehensive clinical management includes selection of candidates, implementation and monitoring of therapy, and ensuring a seamless transition when PN is no longer required. Optimal parenteral nutrition demands expertise in caring for vascular access devices. A collaborative approach to care minimizes the risks associated with PN and ensures positive patient outcomes.

RESUMO

AIMS: To compare the duration of the residual hypnotic and sedative effects of zaleplon with those of zolpidem and placebo following nocturnal administration at various times before morning awakening. METHODS: Zaleplon 10 mg, zolpidem 10 mg, or placebo was administered double-blind to 36 healthy subjects under standardized conditions in a six-period, incomplete-block, crossover study. Subjects were gently awakened and given medication at predetermined times 5, 4, 3, or 2 h before morning awakening, which occurred 8 h after bedtime. When the subjects awoke in the morning, a battery of subjective and objective assessments of residual effects of hypnotics was administered. RESULTS: No residual effects were demonstrated after zaleplon 10 mg, when administered as little as 2 h before waking, on either subjective or objective assessments, whereas zolpidem 10 mg showed significant residual effects on DSST and memory (immediate and delayed free recall) after administration up to 5 h before waking and choice reaction time, critical flicker fusion threshold and Sternberg memory scanning after administration up to 4 h before waking. Residual effects of zolpidem were apparent in all objective and subjective measurements when the drug was administered later in the night. CONCLUSIONS: The present results demonstrate that zaleplon at the dose of 10 mg is free of residual hypnotic or sedative effects when administered nocturnally as little as 2 h before waking in normal subjects. In contrast, residual effects of zolpidem are still apparent on objective assessments up to 5 h after nocturnal administration, longer than has been reported from studies involving daytime administration.

RESUMO

This report describes the atypical migration of an impacted lower third molar tooth in a 42-year-old woman. Serial radiographs showed that, over a period of 13 years, the tooth migrated from its original disto-angular position posterior to and beneath the roots of the adjacent second molar to a more horizontal position beneath the roots of the first permanent molar. The tooth was surgically removed under general anaesthesia, with biopsy and curettage of soft tissue found in the bone posterior to the tooth along the path of migration. This pattern of tooth movement is highly unusual in an adult patient.

RESUMO

A survey was undertaken to analyze osseointegrated implants placed in irradiated maxillae and mandibles. It was found that nine centers in Japan and two centers in the United States had placed 228 implants in 44 patients. Of 228 implants, 59 were placed in the maxilla, 169 in the mandible. Three of 169 implants placed in irradiated mandibles were removed; 17 of 59 were removed from maxillae. One hundred nineteen implants were placed in the mandible without adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen treatment, of which only 2 were removed. From these results, it is suggested that osseointegrated implants can be placed in the irradiated mandibles of selected patients without hyperbaric oxygen treatment.

RESUMO

A range of treatment options has been presented regarding the use of dental implants to rehabilitate patients who otherwise have compromised function using conventional tissue-borne prostheses. This patient population offers significant challenges to both the surgeon and the prosthodontist. Generally speaking, IODs retained on two or more endosteal osseointegrated implants; transosteal, subperiosteal, ramus frame implant-supported and implant-retained prostheses, and a totally implant-supported design offer options to treat the severely atrophic mandible. When bone support or volume is so lacking that augmentation procedures are required, bone grafting can be considered as a treatment option. The state-of-the-art of implant treatment for the atrophic mandible offers to the dental professional and patient a variety of options. Thus far, it is too early to make specific recommendations as to which treatment offers the best option for each patient. It is fair to say that the ISP remains the gold standard against which other treatments can be compared.

RESUMO

Fungicides continue to be essential for the effective control of plant diseases. New classes of fungicides with novel modes of action are being developed in the 1990s. These include the strobilurins, phenylpyrroles, anilinopyrimidines, phenoxyquinolines, and compounds that trigger defense mechanisms in the plant. For the foreseeable future, new toxophores will be identified through a process of random screening, with natural products representing a rich source of fungicide leads. Progress is being made in the development of high-throughput screens comprised of target enzyme sites or cell-based assays; these techniques will improve the probability of discovery. Following the identification of suitable leads, biorational design is used to optimize specific properties. In vivo glasshouse screens and field trials are expected to remain the dominant methods for characterizing new compounds. Low toxicity to humans and wildlife, low environmental impact, low residues in food, and compatibility with integrated pest management (IPM) programs are increasingly important considerations in the selection of fungicides for development.

RESUMO

Hazards of oral implant treatment include the inadvertent ingestion or inhalation of components or instruments dropped accidentally into the oropharynx. A case is reported of a swallowed screwdriver, and attention is drawn to the potentially serious consequences. Guidance is given on management. Inhalation of foreign bodies is an even more serious event. The importance of prevention is emphasized both from a medicolegal point of view and as a matter of proper patient care.

RESUMO

Oral juvenile xanthogranuloma is a rare condition, with only 10 histologically proven cases previously described. A histologically unusual variant is reported here, diagnosis of which was aided by the use of immunohistochemical stains. Previously reported cases are reviewed, and their characteristics are tabulated and discussed.
