RESUMO

PURPOSE: In contrast to the extensive literature on fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) experienced by adults, literature evaluating pediatric FCR has just begun to emerge. Given the rapidly expanding body of work assessing FCR in childhood and adolescence, a scoping review was conducted to synthesize existing findings. We aimed to assess (1) the characteristics and methods of this literature, (2) how pediatric FCR has been measured, and (3) the extant knowledge of FCR experienced by pediatric survivors of cancer. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were: (1) original reports, (2) participants diagnosed with cancer before age 18, (3) current mean age under 18, (4) FCR was explicitly measured (quantitatively) or captured (qualitatively) via survivor self-report, and (6) published in English. Exclusion criteria were: (1) case studies, and (2) grey literature. Three databases (Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO) and reference lists from included studies were searched. All studies were screened for inclusion by two authors and all data were extracted by a single author. RESULTS: Of 3906 identified studies, 19 were included. Studies (published 1991 - 2023) encompassed diverse geographical locations, study designs, and measurement methods. Few assessed FCR as a primary aim (n = 6, 32%). FCR was experienced by 43 - 90% of pediatric survivors. FCR was often positively associated with somatic symptoms and negatively associated with quality of life and emotional functioning. CONCLUSION: FCR is a prevalent issue for children and adolescents. Additional evidence is needed to explore and confirm preliminary findings. Future pediatric FCR studies should aim to align with published priority research areas.

RESUMO

Despite broad skepticism within the scientific community regarding paranormal phenomena such as ghosts and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), many members of the public believe in these phenomena. Previous studies have argued that viewing paranormal-themed television-including documentary, reality, and news programming-can cultivate such beliefs. In addition, recent research suggests that the online video-sharing platform YouTube may serve as an important source of messages about fringe phenomena. With that in mind, this study builds on theoretical accounts of genre-specific cultivation and social media affordances to examine how YouTube videos present paranormal topics and whether YouTube use predicts belief in the paranormal. A content analysis of 50 highly viewed YouTube videos about paranormal topics (25 about hauntings and 25 about UFOs) showed that a large majority of these videos featured paranormal claims and that a majority included purported footage of paranormal phenomena. Scientific sources appeared in only a quarter of UFO videos and almost no haunting videos, while government sources appeared in most UFO videos, but few haunting videos. An analysis of data from a survey of the U.S. public (n = 1,035), in turn, found that paranormal documentary or reality television viewing, paranormal news use, and YouTube use predicted belief in hauntings, controlling for a range of other media use variables and background factors. These results highlight the potential for video-sharing platforms such as YouTube to reinforce paranormal beliefs among the public.

RESUMO

The feelings of knowing - fundamental interoceptive patterns (FoK-FIP) theory is both a theory of the mind and a unification theory. It includes cosmological and cellular frameworks. The cellular frameworks occur through the cosmological frameworks. This framework within a framework approach allows the connection between physics and consciousness to be envisioned in new ways, expanding current understanding and definitions. The cosmological frameworks refer to the astrophysics and theoretical physics constructs (e.g., string theory) that, without the use of mathematical language, conceptually expand the theory. In contrast, the cellular frameworks are the constructs represented by living organism models with DNA. In this way, the FoK-FIP theory represents an efficient framework for understanding consciousness and its phenomena. The transdisciplinary modeling of the FoK-FIP theory creates contextual bridging between classical theory and quantum theory as well as a broad range of empirical research so that biology and information connect, creating new avenues for disease diagnosis, intervention, and prevention. This article intends to render the FoK-FIP theory more robust and accessible for practical application by introducing the FoK-FIP system, which includes figures to promote clarity. Further, the theory aims to stimulate reasoning that challenges current notions about 'life' and the concept of 'self.' Through this process, the theory might contribute to the transdisciplinary collaboration needed to address some of the world's complex issues. It is suggested that a significant contributor to the current complex matters in the world is the lack of understanding of how things are and how they appear.

RESUMO

The Feelings of Knowing - Fundamental Interoceptive Patterns (FoK-FIP) is a transdisciplinary theory developed to explain elusive phenomena suspected to exist that do not easily lend themselves to empirical measurement. The FoK-FIP theory posits that specialized self-generated biomagnetism and "pure mental" process share similarities with the hypothetical elementary particle described in particle physics, magnetic monopoles with a magnetic charge. Feelings of Knowing (FoK) are "awareness charge" that are self-generated events. Fundamental Interoceptive Patterns (FIP) are restricted oscillatory magnetic fields that are FoK caused phenomena. Further, FoK produces "cognitive force," an observing ego representing specialized interoceptive awareness. Through embodied states, FoK-FIP acts as a "biological node," an informational processing unit in which physiological signals and an observing ego's sensations or feelings are centered. An observing ego cognitively broadcasts using specialized small magnetic signals and four phases of a narrowed range of interoceptive signals. By defining interoceptive signals (i.e., signals of the body's internal state) using FoK-FIP through cognitive broadcasting, an observing ego creates a world it projects around itself. This process is understood through the components map with interoceptive markers (IMs), a novel algorithm based on biological evolution. FoK-FIP-related predictions are described as are empirical studies to test aspects of the theory. The FoK-FIP theory details a path to wellbeing based on a sense of control and capacity for self-care. Mental stability is thought to change as a function of an observing ego's volitional reactions.

RESUMO

With a possibility for the use of chemical weapons in battlefield or in terrorist activities, effective therapies against the devastating ocular injuries, from their exposure, are needed. Oxygen plays a vital role in ocular tissue preservation and wound repair. We tested the efficacy of supersaturated oxygen emulsion (SSOE) in reducing ex vivo corneal and keratocyte injury from chloropicrin (CP). CP, currently used as a pesticide, is a chemical threat agent like the vesicating mustard agents and causes severe corneal injury. Since our previous study in human corneal epithelial cells showed the treatment potential of SSOE (55 %), we further tested its efficacy in an ex vivo CP-induced rabbit corneal injury model. Corneas were exposed to CP (700 nmol) for 2 h, washed and cultured with or without SSOE for 24 h or 96 h. At 96 h post CP exposure, SSOE treatment presented a healing tendency of the corneal epithelial layer, and abrogated the CP-induced epithelial apoptotic cell death. SSOE treatment also reduced the CP induced DNA damage (H2A.X phosphorylation) and inflammatory markers (e.g. MMP9, IL-21, MIP-1ß, TNFα). Further examination of the treatment efficacy of SSOE alone or in combination with other therapies in in vivo cornea injury models for CP and vesicants, is warranted.

RESUMO

Highly toxic industrial chemicals that are widely accessible, and hazardous chemicals like phosgene oxime (CX) that can be easily synthesized, pose a serious threat as potential chemical weapons. In addition, their accidental release can lead to chemical emergencies and mass casualties. CX, an urticant, or nettle agent, grouped with vesicating agents, causes instant pain, injury and systemic effects, which can lead to mortality. With faster cutaneous penetration, corrosive properties, and more potent toxicity compared to other vesicating agents, CX causes instantaneous and severe tissue damage. CX, a potential chemical terrorism threat agent, could therefore be weaponized with other chemical warfare agents to enhance their harmful effects. CX is the least studied vesicant and its acute and long-term toxic effects as well as its mechanism of action are largely unknown. This has hampered the identification of therapeutic targets and the development of effective medical countermeasures. There are only protective measures, decontamination, and supportive treatments available for reducing the toxic effects from CX exposure. This review summarizes CX toxicity, its known mechanism of action, and our current studies exploring the role of mast cell activation and associated signaling pathways in CX cutaneous exposure under the National Institutes of Health Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats program. Potential treatment options and the development of effective targeted countermeasures against CX-induced morbidity and mortality is also discussed.

RESUMO

This article presents a hypothesis that primordial feelings (e.g., pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral) may be created by the cognizing and categorizing of brain electrochemical activity. The realization of action potentials generated by neurons that cause electrochemical signals to be released and cross synapses may create primordial feelings. A primordial feeling may precede image making and mark the first moment of subjectivity while thinking. It may produce a Feeling of Knowing (FOK) that when associated with physical sensations originating within the body (i.e., interoception) cause a broadly heightened awareness of thought and become a risk factor for certain aspects of mental afflictions. The strategy outlined in this article is to use mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) and exposure activity to break up the automaticity of habitual reactions to primordial feelings as FOKs associated with interoception and do something different. Thus the individual does not move away from the unpleasant interoceptive experience but instead stays with it and learns to not push the not right experience away but instead just let it be. Through mindfulness-based interventions unpleasant interoception is used to focus one's reactivity to unpleasant primordial feelings and FOKs and break up the automaticity of being driven by them. Thereby, one decides to approach these internal sensations though exposure to the interoceptive not just right sense instead of engaging in neutralizing activity.

RESUMO

Prerelease reconditioning improves the chance of survival of rehabilitating raptors. Reconditioning may also help to rehabilitate waterfowl, including those that are threatened or endangered, especially if the birds are released during periods of migration. A flying harness, creance, remote-controlled launcher, and portable tower were used to create a means of reconditioning a rehabilitating 5-month-old female wild mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) that had been housed in a rehabilitation center for 7 weeks while recovering from an injury. Pre- and postflight serum lactate levels, body condition index scores, and controlled flight distances were used to assess the bird's degree of conditioning. Postflight serum lactate levels never returned to preflight levels and were not deemed a reliable indicator of physical fitness. However, the mallard showed an increase in endurance and strength as well as improved body condition index scores over the course of the reconditioning program.
