RESUMO

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 continues to mutate over time, and reports on children infected with Omicron BA.5 are limited. We aimed to analyze the specific symptoms of Omicron-infected children and to improve patient care. METHODS: We selected 315 consecutively hospitalized children with Omicron BA.5 and 16,744 non-Omicron-infected febrile children visiting the fever clinic at our hospital between December 8 and 30, 2022. Specific convulsions and body temperatures were compared between the two cohorts. We analyzed potential associations between convulsions and vaccination, and additionally evaluated the brain damage among severe Omicron-infected children. RESULTS: Convulsion rates (97.5% vs. 4.3%, P < 0.001) and frequencies (median: 2.0 vs. 1.6, P < 0.001) significantly differed between Omicron-infected and non-Omicron-infected febrile children. The body temperatures of Omicron-infected children were significantly higher during convulsions than when they were not convulsing and those of non-Omicron-infected febrile children during convulsions (median: 39.5 vs. 38.2 and 38.6 °C, both P < 0.001). In the three Omicron-subgroups, the temperature during convulsions was proportional to the percentage of patients and significantly differed ( P < 0.001), while not in the three non-Omicron-subgroups ( P = 0.244). The convulsion frequency was lower in the 55 vaccinated children compared to the 260 non-vaccinated children (average: 1.8 vs. 2.1, P < 0.001). The vaccination dose and convulsion frequency in Omicron-infected children were significantly correlated ( P < 0.001). Fifteen of the 112 severe Omicron cases had brain damage. CONCLUSIONS: Omicron-infected children experience higher body temperatures and frequencies during convulsions than those of non-Omicron-infected febrile children. We additionally found evidence of brain damage caused by infection with omicron BA.5. Vaccination and prompt fever reduction may relieve symptoms.

RESUMO

A carbon nanotube (CNT) may facilitate near-frictionless water transport within it. In this work, we elucidate the slip flow characteristics for a CNT embedded in a silicon nitride matrix using the molecular dynamics (MD) method. We reveal that the wetting transparency of a CNT, the transmission of the membrane matrix wetting property over a CNT, cannot be ignored. Due to the effect of CNT wetting transparency, the orientation flip behavior of water molecules should be the primary cause of the entrance and exit losses, which is a dominant factor influencing the interfacial friction coefficient for the thin CNT membrane. The relationship between the friction coefficient and pore size follows a logarithmic function, which agrees well with the reported experimental data. Our findings bridge the gap between the MD prediction and experimental observation for water transport in a CNT membrane and provide a clear understanding of the mechanism behind its ultrafast flow performance.

RESUMO

Background: Percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure is the preferred treatment for patients with suitable ASD anatomy. The safety and effectiveness of transcatheter closure have been established. However, reports on transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)-guided percutaneous closure of ASD via the right internal jugular vein (RIJV) are limited. The study aims to discuss the safety and effectiveness of percutaneous trans-jugular vein closure of ASD. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients (n=103) with secondary ASD who underwent surgical treatment in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, the Second Hospital of Jilin University between July 2015 to July 2022. The article is a cross-sectional study. Clinical data, including age, gender, weight, defect diameter, tricuspid regurgitation, left atrial (LA) size, and the operation results, were collected and evaluated. Nonparametric rank sum tests were used to assess tricuspid regurgitation before and after surgery, while paired sample t-tests were used to compare LA size before and after surgery. Results: TEE-guided percutaneous closure of ASD via the RIJV was successfully performed in 97 out of 103 (94.2%) cases. The average procedure time was 34.48±13.06 min, and the mean age at the time of the procedure and ASD size were 36±18 years and 15.45±5.82 mm, respectively. On analyzing medical records and echocardiographic images, postoperative complications were found to occur in four (3.9%) patients. Among these, three patients had residual shunt as indicated by echocardiography during the operation, which subsequently disappeared at the three-month follow-up. One patient developed atrial fibrillation after surgery but returned to normal sinus rhythm with medication. Percutaneous closure of ASD via the RIJV was unsuccessful in 6 patients (5.8%), with 5 of them undergoing transthoracic ASD closure and achieving satisfactory results. One patient refused further surgical treatment. No pericardial effusion, thrombosis, atrioventricular block, or other complications were observed during the 3-month to 1-year follow-up period. Conclusions: ASD closure via the RIJV is a safe and effective therapeutic approach. The initial results are satisfactory, but further studies with large sample sizes and long-term follow-up are warranted to assess the long-term outcomes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To develop a mediastinal shift angle (MSA) measurement method applicable to right-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (RCDH) in fetal MRI and to validate the predictive value of MSA in RCDH. METHODS: Twenty-seven fetuses with isolated RCDH and 53 controls were included in our study. MSA was measured on MRI axial image at the level of four-chamber view of the fetal heart. The angle between the sagittal midline landmark line and the left boundary landmark line touching tangentially the lateral wall of the left ventricle was used to quantify MSA for RCDH. Appropriate statistical analyses were performed to determine whether MSA can be regarded as a valid predictive tool for postnatal outcomes. Furthermore, predictive performance of MSA was compared with that of lung area to head circumference ratio (LHR), observed/expected LHR (O/E LHR), total fetal lung volume (TFLV), and observed/expected TFLV (O/E TFLV). RESULTS: MSA was significantly higher in the RCDH group than in the control group. MSA, LHR, O/E LHR, TFLV, and O/E TFLV were all correlated with postnatal survival, pulmonary hypertension (PH), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy (p < 0.05). Value of the AUC demonstrated good predictive performance of MSA for postnatal survival (0.901, 95%CI: (0.781-1.000)), PH (0.828, 95%CI: (0.661-0.994)), and ECMO therapy (0.813, 95%CI: (0.645-0.980)), which was similar to O/E TFLV but slightly better than TFLV, O/E LHR, and LHR. CONCLUSIONS: We developed a measurement method of MSA for RCDH for the first time and demonstrated that MSA could be used to predict postnatal survival, PH, and ECMO therapy in RCDH. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Newly developed MRI assessment method of fetal MSA in RCDH offers a simple and effective risk stratification tool for patients with RCDH. KEY POINTS: • We developed a measurement method of mediastinal shift angle for right-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia for the first time and demonstrated its feasibility and reproducibility. • Mediastinal shift angle can predict more prognostic information other than survival in right-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia with good performance. • Mediastinal shift angle can be used as a simple and effective risk stratification tool in right-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia to improve planning of postnatal management.

RESUMO

An ideal chronic wound dressing needs to have some properties, such as antibacterial, antioxidant, regulating macrophage polarization and promoting angiogenesis. This work presents a microneedle patch fabricated from oxidized konjac glucomannan (OKGM-MNs), in which Copper-gallate metal-organic framework (CuGA-MOF) is encapsulated for wound healing (denoted as CuGA-MOF@OKGM-MNs). CuGA-MOF is composed of Cu2+ and gallic acid (GA), which are released through microneedles in the deep layer of the dermis. The released Cu2+ is able to act as an antibacterial agent and promote angiogenesis, while GA as a reactive oxygen species scavenger displays antioxidant activity. More attractively, the material OKGM used to prepare the microneedle patch is not only a drug carrier but also plays a role in promoting macrophage polarization M2 phenotype. In vitro experiments showed that CuGA-MOF@OKGM-MNs had good antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The therapeutic effect on wound healing has been confirmed in full-thickness skin wounds of diabetes mice models, which showed that the wound could be completely healed within 21 days under the treatment of CuGA-MOF@OKGM-MNs, and the healing effect was better than other groups. These indicated that the proposed CuGA-MOF@OKGM-MNs could be applicable in the treatment of clinical wound healing.

RESUMO

AIM: This study is aimed to explore the association between the occupational stress and mental health among Chinese nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: There were 2913 nurse participants enrolled in the study. Demographic characteristics and other data were measured by a self-reported questionnaire. Occupational stress was measured by using the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) questionnaire. Mental health was measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the General Anxiety Disorder-7. RESULTS: Among the participants, 14.32% (417) experienced ERI; 8.1% (237) and 7.2% (210) reported depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively. Compared with a reference group at the lowest quartile of the ERI, participants in the highest quartile had an adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95% CI) of 11.17 (4.42, 28.25) for incident depressive symptoms. For anxiety symptoms, the OR and 95% CI was 2.28 (1.21, 4.29). The ERI was shown to have a detrimental effect on mental health, especially depressive symptoms.

RESUMO

In this work, a simplified wetting boundary scheme in the phase-field lattice Boltzmann model is developed for wetting phenomena on curved boundaries. The proposed scheme combines the advantages of the fluid-solid interaction scheme and geometric scheme-easy to implement (no need to interpolate the values of parameters exactly on solid boundaries and find proper characteristic vectors), the value of contact angle can be directly prescribed, and no unphysical spurious mass layer-and avoids mass leakage. Different from previous works, the values of the order parameter gradient on fluid boundary nodes are directly determined according to the geometric formulation rather than indirectly regulated through the order parameters on ghost solid nodes (i.e., ghost contact-line region). For this purpose, two numerical approaches to evaluate the order parameter gradient on fluid boundary nodes are utilized, one with the prevalent isotropic central scheme and the other with a local gradient scheme that utilizes the distribution functions. The simplified wetting boundary schemes with both numerical approaches are validated and compared through several numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that the proposed model has good ability and satisfactory accuracy to simulate wetting phenomena on curved boundaries under large density ratios.

RESUMO

Wound healing, especially chronic wounds, has been one of the major challenges in the field of biomedicine. Drug therapy alone is not effective, so a variety of functional wound healing dressings have been developed. Microneedles have attracted more and more attentions in the field of wound healing dressings due to their penetration and high drug delivery efficiency. In this review, all the studies on the application of microneedles in wound healing in recent years are summarized, classify different microneedles according to their functions in the process of wound healing, discuss the current challenges in the transformation of microneedle technology toward clinical applications, and finally look forward to the future design and development directions of microneedles in this field.

RESUMO

Purpose of the study: Brindle et al. (2014) and the Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Study Group constructed a simplified clinical prediction rule (Brindle score) to stratify infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia based on disease severity. We aimed to develop a predictive model applicable to Chinese patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and externally validate whether the Brindle score is applicable to the Chinese population. Patients and the methods: Multiple imputations supplemented the missing data. A least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was used to screen the factors influencing adverse outcomes. Internal validation was performed by bootstrap resampling. The C-index, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test evaluated the predictive power. Results: A nomogram named "CCDH score" (Chinese Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia score), including pulmonary hypertension, low 5-min Apgar score (<7), chromosomal anomaly, major cardiac anomalies (MCAs), observed-to-expected lung-to-head ratio, and the percentage of liver herniation, was constructed. The CCDH score revealed good calibration and discriminative abilities, with a C-index of 0.941. In the training and external validation cohorts, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the Brindle score were 0.820 and 0.881, respectively. The Brindle score has fair predictive power in the Chinese population, but the newly established CCDH score seems more suitable for Chinese patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Conclusion: The CCDH score is the first predictive model constructed based on the characteristics of the Chinese population and can accurately predict the survival outcomes of patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

RESUMO

The multifunctional hydrogel dressings are effective strategy to treat chronic wounds of diabetes. In addition, the ability of selective degradation on demand to change dressings could provide better patient compliance. Here, an injectable, self-healing hydrogel with rapid degradability on-demand is designed to promote the healing of diabetes wounds. The block copolymer formed by aldehyde modified aliphatic cyclic carbonate monomer with polyethylene glycol (MBP) and chitosan (CS) were crosslinked through the Schiff base bond to obtain a hydrogel with excellent injectability and self-healing ability. Due to the presence of carbonate bonds in MBP, it showed the rapid on-demand degradation characteristics triggered by N-acetylcysteine (NAC). At the same time, gallic acid (GA) was loaded into the hydrogel, giving the hydrogel dressing antioxidant. In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that the hydrogel wound dressing possesses good natures, such as antibacterial, antioxidant, and friendly cell compatibility, which could promote wound healing. Overall, the multifunctional hydrogel wound dressings with rapid on-demand degradation characteristics are more practical for clinical applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Invasion of the corpus callosum by sparganosis is rare in children. After invading the corpus callosum, sparganosis has various migration modes, which can break through the ependyma and enter the ventricles, thus causing secondary migratory brain injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A girl aged 4 years and 7 months presented with left lower limb paralysis for more than 50 days. Blood examination showed that the proportion and absolute number of eosinophils in the peripheral blood were increased. Furthermore, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples revealed positivity for IgG and IgM antibodies for sparganosis. Initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed ring-like enhancements in the right frontoparietal cortex, subcortical white matter, and splenium of the corpus callosum. Within 2 months, a fourth follow-up MRI showed that the lesion had spread to the left parietal cortex, subcortical white matter, and deep white matter in the right occipital lobe and right ventricular choroid plexus, with left parietal leptomeningeal enhancement. CONCLUSION: Migratory movement is one of the characteristics of cerebral sparganosis. When sparganosis invades the corpus callosum, clinicians should be aware that it may then break through the ependyma and enter the lateral ventricles, leading to secondary migratory brain injury. Short-term follow-up MRI is necessary to evaluate the migration mode of sparganosis and dynamically guide treatment strategies.

RESUMO

Active plasmonic metamolecules under microscopic observation are promising for optical reporters in single molecule sensing applications. While self-assembled reconfigurable chiral plasmonic metamolecules can be conveniently engineered with sensing functionalities, their observation is usually based on ensemble measurements, where the chiroptical response of enantiomers tend to cancel each other in ensemble circular dichroism. Herein, we demonstrate microscopic observation of enantiomeric switching of individual active DNA origami-assembled plasmonic metamolecules. The metamolecules are immobilized on a glass substrate in a microfluidic chamber, in which the plasmonic metamolecule can maintain their activities upon certain local stimuli as in solution. In circular differential scattering, two enantiomeric states controlled by the strand-displacement reaction display opposite spectral signals to each other, representing successful enantiomeric switching of the chirality. Moreover, in a close-to-racemic mixture of chiral metamolecules controlled by pH-sensitive strands, the coexistence of enantiomeric individuals, which is concealed in ensemble measurements, is clearly identified.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Nurses were more likely to experience mental disorders due to long working hours and irregular schedules. However, studies addressing this issue are scarce; therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between long working hours and mental health in Chinese nurses during the coronavirus disease pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 2,811 nurses at a tertiary hospital in China from March to April 2022. We collected data on demographic, psychological characteristics, dietary habits, life, and work-related factors using a self-reported questionnaire and measured mental health using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and General Anxiety Disorder-7. Binary logistic regression to determine adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: The effective response rates were 81.48%, 7.80% (219), and 6.70% (189) of the respondents who reported depression and anxiety, respectively. We categorized the weekly working hours by quartiles. Compared with the lowest quartile, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals across the quartiles for depression after adjustment were 0.98 (0.69, 1.40), 10.58 (2.78, 40.32), and 1.79 (0.81, 3.97) respectively, the P for trend was 0.002. The odds ratios across the quartiles for anxiety after adjustment were 0.87 (0.59, 1.30), 8.69 (2.13, 35.46), and 2.67 (1.26, 5.62), respectively, and the P for trend was 0.008. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that extended working hours increased the risk of mental disorders among nurses during the coronavirus disease pandemic, particularly in those who worked more than 60 h per week. These findings enrich the literature on mental disorders and demonstrate a critical need for additional studies investigating intervention strategies.

RESUMO

Dental fluorosis (DF) is a widely prevalent disease caused by excessive fluoride with limited awareness of its underlying pathogenesis. Here, a pilot population study was conducted to explore the pathogenesis of DF from the perspective of intestinal microbiome changes, and verified it in animal experiments combining intestinal microbiome and metabolomics. A total of 23 children were recruited in 2017 in China and divided into DF (n = 9) and control (n = 14) groups (DFG and CG, respectively). The SD rat model was established by drinking water containing sodium fluoride (NaF). Gut microbiome profiles of children and rats were analyzed by16S rDNA V3-V4 sequencing, and the intestinal metabolomics analysis of rats was performed by LC-MS methods. The 16 S rDNA sequencing revealed that the gut microbiome composition was significantly perturbed in children in DFG compared to that in CG. Acidobacteria and Thermi were specifically observed in DFG and CG, respectively. Besides, 15 fecal microbiotas were significantly altered at the genus level in DFG. Furthermore, only the expression of annotated genes for pentose and glucuronate interconversion pathway was significant lower in DFG than that in CG (P = 0.04). Notably, in NaF-treated rats, we also observed the changes of some key components of pentose and glucuronate interconversion pathway at the level of microorganisms and metabolites. Our findings suggested that the occurrence of DF is closely related to the alteration of intestinal microorganisms and metabolites annotated in the pentose and glucuronate interconversion pathway.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the predictive value of mediastinal shift angle (MSA) in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 87 fetuses with prenatally diagnosed left-sided CDH (LCDH) and 88 controls. MSA was measured on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Lung area to head circumference ratio (LHR), ratio of the observed/expected LHR (O/E LHR), total fetal lung volume (TFLV), and observed/expected total fetal lung volume (O/E TFLV) were also measured. Correlation of MSA with pulmonary hypertension (PH), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) use, duration of hospitalization and survival in neonates with CDH was analyzed. Performance of MSA in prediction of postnatal outcomes was compared with LHR, O/E LHR, TFLV, and O/E TFLV. RESULTS: There were significant differences in MSA values not only between the CDH group and the control group but also in CDH patients with different survival outcomes. MSA was inversely correlated with O/E LHR, O/E TFLV, and TFLV. MSA, LHR, O/E LHR, TFLV, and O/E TFLV could all be used to predict survival of CDH patients. In addition, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that the test performance of MSA was similar to that of TFLV, O/E TFLV, and O/E LHR, but superior to that of LHR. MSA was also correlated with PH, need for ECMO support, and duration of hospitalization. CONCLUSION: MRI measurement of MSA can provide various prognostic information for prenatally diagnosed LCDH, in addition to postnatal survival. The test performance of MSA is similar to TFLV, O/E TFLV, and O/E LHR. KEY POINTS: • Mediastinal shift angle (MSA) can be measured quickly and reproducibly on MRI images. • MSA could provide more prognostic information other than postnatal survival for LCDH with good test performance. • MSA should be incorporated into prenatal risk stratification for LCDH to improve planning of postnatal management.

RESUMO

Objectives: Proximal interruption of the pulmonary artery (PIPA) has various clinical manifestations. This review focused on and summarized the clinical and radiological features of PIPA, based on relevant literature studies. Methods: The study included a total of 25 PIPA cases in the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center between January 2015 and December 2021. Conventional chest photographs and chest computed tomography angiography (CCTA) of patients with PIPA were analyzed and summarized. Results: The radiological results showed that 17 cases were right-sided and 8 cases were left-sided PIPA. Additionally, the percentage of pulmonary hypoplasia on the affected side was 44%, 36% for pulmonary hypertension, 28% for the mosaic sign, 20% for subpleural cystic lucency shadow, 20% for subpleural serrated shadow, 20% for collateral vessel thickening, 16% for subpleural band-like parenchyma, 12% for pneumonia, and 56% for patent ductus arteriosus. Conclusion: The clinical manifestations of PIPA are non-specific. Awareness of this anomaly, based on radiological manifestations, particularly those observed on CCTA images, is important for ruling out alternative diagnoses and implementing appropriate management.

RESUMO

Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of prenatal MRI in diagnosing choledochal cysts (CDC), evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of MRI signs in the diagnosis of fetal CDC, and first compare the trend of size of CC between prenatal and postpartum. Methods: A total of 18 fetal who were diagnosed with CDCs through prenatal MRI were enrolled in the study. We summarized and analyzed the prenatal clinical data and prognosis information of prenatal and postpartum surgery, then compared the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of various signs of MRI and postpartum MRCP diagnosis of CC. Finally, we tried to compare the earliest prenatal detection of common bile duct cysts with the size of surgery, and calculated the growth rate of common bile duct cysts for the first time. Results: All 18 patients were delivered in our institution. Among these patients, 14 were confirmed with CDCs after postpartum surgery, two patients had CDCs that disappeared, and two patients were confirmed with cystic biliary atresia (CBA) through the Kasai operation. Furthermore, 13 patients with CDCs and two patients with CBA underwent MRCP before the operation, and one patient with CDCs ruptured at birth and underwent ultrasound diagnosis. The sensitivity and diagnostic compliance of prenatal MRI signs for the location were higher when compared to postnatal MRCP (100% vs. 76.9% and 83.3% vs. 66.7%): the cyst was located at the porta hepatis, which was higher than the lowest edge of the liver, and parallel to the hepatoduodenal ligament. Conclusion: Prenatal MRI is higher than that of US for diagnosing CDCs, specifically in identifying the location of the cyst and confirming the origin of the cyst. The length, width, and size of the CDC become slightly bigger in our study.

RESUMO

Background: ADP ribosylation factor 6 (ARF6) is a member of the Rat sarcoma virus (RAS) superfamily that is involved in the regulation of vesicular trafficking, membrane lipid remodeling, and signaling pathways. Our earlier work discovered that ARF6, as a downstream effector of the Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene (Kras)/extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) signaling pathway, may increase proliferation and induce the Warburg effect in gastric cancer (GC) cells. Additionally, ARF6 appears to be a potential biomarker for predicting the prognosis of GC. Ferroptosis has recently been described as a type of nonapoptotic iron-dependent cell death that is strongly associated with the Kras mutation. Therefore, it is critical to continue investigating the link between ARF6 and ferroptosis. Methods: We first created ARF6 silenced cancer cell lines with lentivirus transfection. The knockdown efficiency was confirmed through quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and western blotting. Subsequently, we used Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and malondialdehyde (MDA) assay for lipid peroxidation measurement. Following this, qPCR and western blotting were conducted to clarify the mechanism involved. Finally, immunohistochemistry was used to stain human GC samples. Results: Our findings established that, whereas ARF6 did not directly regulate lipid peroxidation, it did render GC cells susceptible to oxidative stress, particularly erastin-induced lipid peroxidation. Additionally, our research demonstrated that ARF6 may control capecitabine resistance via several routes. Conclusions: ARF6 may play a critical role in the development of GC.

Depression is a common psychiatric disease caused by various factors, manifesting with continuous low spirits, with its precise mechanism being unclear. Early life stress (ELS) is receiving more attention as a possible cause of depression. Many studies focused on the mechanisms underlying how ELS leads to changes in sex hormones, neurotransmitters, hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical (HPA) axis function, and epigenetics. The adverse effects of ELS on adulthood are mainly dependent on the time window when stress occurs, sex and the developmental stage when evaluating the impacts. Therefore, with regard to the exact sex differences of adult depression, we found that ELS could lead to sex-differentiated depression through multiple mechanisms, including 5-HT, sex hormone, HPA axis, and epigenetics.

RESUMO

A major type of serious mood disorder, depression is currently a widespread and easily overlooked psychological illness. With the low side effects of natural products in the treatment of diseases becoming the pursuit of new antidepressants, natural Chinese medicine products have been paid more and more attention for their unique efficacy in improving depression. In a view from the current study, the positive antidepressant effects of berberine are encouraging. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to accurately elucidate the efficacy and mechanism of berberine in depression. In this review, the relevant literature reports on the treatment of depression and anxiety by berberine are updated, and the potential pharmacological mechanism of berberine in relieving depression has also been discussed.
