RESUMO

This study reports the successful synthesis of flame-retardant and smoke-suppressing epoxy resin (EP) via bio-based polyelectrolyte flame retardants. Herein, a novel polyelectrolyte flame retardant was prepared from chitosan (CS) and hexa-(4-carboxyl-phenoxy)-cyclotriphosphazene (HCPCP) by acid-base neutralization reaction, which the HCPCP was synthesized with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and methyl p-hydroxybenzoate (MP) by nucleophilic substitution reaction. The combined effect of the addition on the flame retardant, smoke suppression and mechanical properties of EP samples were systematically investigated. The presence of this bio-based polyelectrolyte provided excellent smoke suppression and flame-retardant properties of the prepared EP. Among them, the peak heat release rate (PHRR), peak smoke production rate (PSPR) and total smoke production (TSP) of EP/9wt%3CS-HCPCP composite (the ratio of CS to HCPCP was 3: 7, and the dosage was 9 wt%) were reduced by 45.42 %, 41.66 % and 22.56 %, respectively. In addition, the EP/CS-HCPCP composites showed a 207.80 % enhancement in char residue compared to pure EP. These results suggest a green and cost-effective strategy for the production of flame-retardant, drip-proof and smoke-suppressed EP composites.

RESUMO

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of tea polyphenols on growth performance, cytokine content, intestinal antioxidant status and intestinal barrier function of lambs, in order to provide reference for intestinal health of ruminants. Methods: Thirty weaned lambs (average initial weight 9.32 ± 1.72 kg) were randomly divided into five groups with six lambs in each group. The control group did not add anything but the basic diet mainly composed of Pennisetum and Corn, and the other four groups added 2, 4, 6 g/kg tea polyphenols and 50 mg/kg chlortetracycline to the basic diet, respectively. The experiment lasted for 42 days. Results: Dietary tea polyphenols improved the growth and stress response and reduced intestinal permeability of lambs (p > 0.05), while CTC did not affect the final lamb weight (p > 0.05). Both tea phenols and CTC significantly reduced inflammatory factors and enhanced the immune system (p > 0.05). Dietary tea polyphenols increased villus height, villus height/crypt depth, secretory immunoglobulin A (p > 0.05), and antioxidant enzymes, while decreasing MDA and apoptosis in the intestine (p > 0.05). However, compared with other groups, the content of T-AOC in jejunum did not change significantly (p > 0.05). Tea polyphenols also increased claudin-1 levels in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum more than CTC (p > 0.05). CTC had a limited effect on the mRNA expression of Occludin and ZO-1, while tea polyphenols increased these in both the duodenum and ileum (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that tea polyphenols can effectively improve the intestinal barrier of weaned lambs, and that they have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects similar to those of antibiotics. Thus, tea polyphenols could be used to replace antibiotics in ensuring safety of livestock products and in achieving the sustainable development of modern animal husbandry.

RESUMO

Background: In sepsis, the lungs are one of the most severely affected organs, usually resulting in acute lung injury (ALI). Capsaicin (CAP) is a natural compound found in chili peppers that has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we report that nanoparticles containing capsaicin and iron (Fe-CAP NPs) exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in the treatment of ALI. Methods: The morphological characteristics of nanozymes were detected. RAW 264.7 cells were divided into four groups: control, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), CAP+LPS and Fe-CAP+LPS groups. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was assessed by immunofluorescence, Western blot, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) expression was determined by Western blot. C57 mice were divided into control, LPS, CAP+LPS and Fe-CAP+LPS groups. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and iNOS expression in the lung was detected by Western Blot. IL-6 and TNF-α expression in serum was detected by ELISA. Extravasated Evans blue, histopathological evaluation and wet-to-dry (W/D) weight ratio were used to assess pulmonary capillary permeability. The blood and major organs (heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney) of mice were tested for the toxicity of Fe-CAP NPs. Results: In the LPS group, TNF-α, iNOS, p-NF-κB and p-IKBα expression increased. However, their expression was significantly decreased in the Fe-CAP+LPS group. TGF-ß expression showed the opposite trend. In vivo, IL-6 and iNOS expression was notably increased in the lungs of LPS group of mice but decreased with Fe-CAP pretreatment. Fe-CAP significantly ameliorated lung EB leakage, improved the histopathology of lung tissue and reduced the W/D weight ratio. The nanoparticles showed non-cytotoxicity, when studying these biological activities. Conclusion: Fe-CAP NPs could alleviated inflammation by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory factors in macrophages, increasing the expression of anti-inflammatory factors, and alleviating lung tissue damage.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a severe syndrome of organ dysfunction that often leads to cardiac dysfunction and endangers life. The role of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) in LPS-induced myocardial injury is unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of ALDH2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced myocardial injury and the regulatory mechanism and to identify potential therapeutic strategies for treating this condition. METHODS: An in vivo model was established by 12 h of LPS (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection) stimulation, and an in vitro model was generated by stimulating H9C2 cells with LPS (10 µg/ml) for 12 h. We then used the ALDH2 activator Alda-1 and the ALDH2 inhibitor daidzin to assess their effects on LPS-induced cardiac injury. Cardiac function in mice was evaluated by using cardiac ultrasound. We used various methods to evaluate inflammation, apoptosis, and oxidative stress, including ELISA, flow cytometry, JC-1 staining, Western blotting, and DCFH-DA staining. Additionally, we used a small interfering RNA (siRNA) to knock down cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) to further investigate the relationship between ALDH2 and cGAS in LPS-induced cardiac injury. RESULTS: LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction and increased the levels of the cardiac injury markers creatine kinase-MB (CKMB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in vivo. This change was accompanied by an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, which exacerbated the oxidative stress response and regulated apoptosis through cleaved caspase-3, BAX, BCL-2. The expression of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6/IL-1ß/TNF-α was also upregulated. However, these effects were reversed by pretreatment with Alda-1 via the inhibition of cGAS/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway. Interestingly, LPS, Alda-1 and daidzin altered the activity of ALDH2 but did not regulate its protein expression. Knocking down cGAS in H9C2 cardiomyocytes alleviated LPS-induced cardiac inflammation, apoptosis, and ROS production and weakened the synergistic effect of daidzin. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that ALDH2 alleviated LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction, inflammation, and apoptosis through the cGAS/STING signaling pathway, thereby protecting against LPS-induced cardiac injury. This study identifies a novel therapeutic approach for treating sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC).

RESUMO

Understanding the relationships between urban expansion and social/environmental features is fundamental to managing watershed and urban expansion. However, such relationships remain unclear, especially across multiple scales of watersheds. Here, we quantified the correlation between urban expansion measures and 255 socioenvironmental indicators across three scales of watersheds running through China (20, 103, and 349 watersheds) during 1992-2016 and analyzed their scaling relations. The results showed that the number of indicators showing a significant correlation with the area and speed of urban expansion increased from 132 and 153 to 234 and 237, respectively, from level 1 to level 3 watersheds. Among these indicators, urban expansion was significantly correlated with indicators of climate and anthropogenic impact. From a large scale (level 1 watershed) to a small scale (level 3 watershed), 104 and 84 socioenvironmental indicators shifted from uncorrelated to significantly correlated with urban expansion area and speed. The constraint line analysis further confirmed that some relationships were nonlinear, which suggested that the drivers and impacts of urban expansion have scaling effects. We argue that it is crucial to consider the scaling effects of urban expansion when we formulate urban or watershed management plans.

RESUMO

We theoretically and experimentally proposed a new structure of ultra-wideband and thin perfect metamaterial absorber loaded with lumped resistances. The thin absorber was composed of four dielectric layers, the metallic double split ring resonators (MDSRR) microstructures and a set of lumped resistors. The mechanism of the ultra-wideband absorption was analyzed and parametric study was also carried out to achieve ultra-wideband operation. The features of ultra-wideband, polarization-insensitivity, and angle-immune absorption were systematically characterized by the angular absorption spectrum, the near electric-field, the surface current distributions and dielectric and ohmic losses. Numerical results show that the proposed metamaterial absorber achieved perfect absorption with absorptivity larger than 80% at the normal incidences within 4.52~25.42 GHz (an absolute bandwidth of 20.9GHz), corresponding to a fractional bandwidth of 139.6%. For verification, a thin metamaterial absorber was implemented using the common printed circuit board method and then measured in a microwave anechoic chamber. Numerical and experimental results agreed well with each other and verified the desired polarization-insensitive ultra-wideband perfect absorption.
