RESUMO

The impact of CO2 fertilization on enhancing global forest gross primary productivity (GPP) is acknowledged, but its interaction with climate factors-air temperature (Tem), precipitation (Pre), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and radiation (Rad)-remains unclear. In this study, global forest GPP trends from 1982 to 2018 were examined using BEPS, NIRv, FLUXCOM, and revised EC-LUE datasets, with interannual trends of 5.618 (p < 0.01), 5.831 (p < 0.01), 0.227, and 6.566 g C m-2 yr-1 (p < 0.01), respectively. Elevated CO2 was identified as the primary driver of GPP trends, with the dominant area ranging from 51.11% to 90.37% across different GPP datasets. In the NIRv and revised EC-LUE datasets, the positive impact of CO2 on GPP showed a decrease of 0.222 g C m-2 yr-1, while the negative impact of Rad increased by 0.007 g C m-2 yr-1. An inhibitory relationship was found between the actual effects of elevated CO2 and climate change on GPP in most forest types. At lower latitudes, Tem primarily constrained CO2 fertilization, while at higher latitudes, VPD emerged as the key limiting factor. This was mainly attributed to the potential trade-off or competition between elevated CO2 and climate change in influencing GPP, with strategic resource allocation varying across different forest ecosystems. This study highlights the significant inhibitory effects of elevated CO2 and climate change on global forest GPP, providing insights into the dynamic responses of forest ecosystems to changing environments.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) on coronal, horizontal, and sagittal deformities of the spine in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) as well as how curve severity, intervention duration, and intervention type could modify these effects. DATA SOURCES: Data sources included the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases, searched from their inception to September 5, 2023. STUDY SELECTION: Clinical controlled trials reporting the effects of PSSE on the Cobb angle, angle of trunk rotation (ATR), thoracic kyphosis (TK), or lumbar lordosis (LL) in AIS patients aged 10 to 18 years. The experimental groups received PSSE; the control groups received standard care (observation or bracing) or conventional exercise such as core stabilization exercise, pilates, PNF, and other non-specific exercise. DATA EXTRACTION: Two researchers independently extracted key information from eligible studies. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook version 5.1.0 risk of bias assessment and the JBI Center for Evidence-Based Health Care (2016) of quasi-experimental research authenticity assessment tool. The level and certainty of evidence was rated according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The protocol for this study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023404996). DATA SYNTHESIS: Twelve randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and five non-RCTs (NRCTs) were meta-analyzed separately. The results indicated that compared with other non-surgical management, PSSE significantly improved the Cobb angle, ATR, and TK, whereas the LL improvement was not statistically significant. Additionally, the efficacy of PSSE on Cobb angle was not significant in patients with curve severity ≥30° compared with controls. Nevertheless, the pooled effect of PSSE on Cobb angle was not significantly modified by intervention duration and intervention type, and on ATR was not significantly modified by intervention duration. The overall quality of evidence according to GRADE was moderate to low for RCT and very low for NRCT. CONCLUSIONS: PSSE exhibited positive benefits on the Cobb angle, ATR, and TK in patients with AIS compared to other non-surgical therapies. In addition, the effectiveness of PSSE may be independent of intervention duration and intervention type, but may be influenced by the initial Cobb angle. However, more RCTs are needed in the future to validate the efficacy of PSSE in moderate AIS with a mean Cobb ≥30°. Current evidence is limited by inconsistent control group interventions and small sample size of the studies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hemorrhagic transformation remains a potentially devastating complication of acute ischemic stroke. We aimed to evaluate whether the hypoperfusion intensity ratio (HIR), a parameter derived from CT perfusion imaging, is associated with the development of hemorrhagic transformation in patients with anterior large-artery occlusion who had undergone thrombectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients who had achieved successful recanalization (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction score ≥ 2b) between January 2020 and December 2023. HIR was defined as the ratio of the volume of lesions with a time-to-maximum (TMax) > 6 s to those with a Tmax > 10 s delay. The primary outcome, based on the European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study, was hemorrhagic transformation (HT), diagnosed by follow-up imaging assessment in 24 h windows, and radiologically classified as hemorrhagic infarction (HI) and parenchymal hematoma (PH). The secondary outcome was a 3-month mRS score of ≥3. RESULTS: Among 168 patients, 35/168 developed hemorrhagic transformation HT; 14/168 developed hemorrhagic infarction HI, and 21/168 developed parenchymal hematoma PH. After adjusting the latent covariates, increased hypoperfusion intensity ratio (per 0.1, adjusted OR [aOR] 1.68, 95% CI 1.26-2.25), ASPECTS (aOR 0.44, 95% CI 0.27-0.72), onset-to-puncture (aOR 1.01, 95% CI 1.00-1.02), and cardioembolism (aOR 5.6, 95% CI 1.59-19.7) were associated with hemorrhagic transformation in multivariable regression. The receiver operating characteristic curve indicated that HIR can predict HT accurately (area under the curve = 0.81; 95% CI, 0.738-0.882; P < 0.001) and predict PH (area under the curve = 0.801; 95% CI, 0.727-0.875; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Upon admission, hypoperfusion intensity ratio, an imaging parameter, predicted hemorrhagic transformation after reperfusion therapy in this patient population.ABBREVIATIONS: HT = hemorrhagic transformation; HIR = hypoperfusion intensity ratio; LVO = left vessel occlusion; EVT = endovascular thrombectomy; AIS = arterial ischemic stroke; OTP = onset-to-puncture; HI = hemorrhagic infarction; PH = parenchymal hematoma.

Pretreatment is the key step to convert lignocelluloses to sustainable biofuels, biochemicals or biomaterials. In this study, a green pretreatment method based on choline chloride-lactic acid deep eutectic solvent (ChCl-LA) and niobium-based single-atom catalyst (Nb/CN) was developed for the fractionation of corn straw and further enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. With this strategy, significant lignin removal of 96.5 % could be achieved when corn straw was pretreated by ChCl-LA (1:2) DES over Nb/CN under 120 °C for 6 h. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose-enriched fraction (CEF) presented high glucose yield of 92.7 % and xylose yield of 67.5 %. In-depth investigations verified that the high yields of fractions and monosaccharides was attributed to the preliminary fractionation by DES and the deep fractionation by Nb/CN. Significantly, compared to other reported soluble catalysts, the synthesized single-atom catalyst displayed excellent reusability by simple filtration and enzymatic hydrolysis. The recyclability experiments showed that the combination of ChCl-LA DES and Nb/CN could be repeated at least three times for corn straw fractionation, moreover, the combination displayed remarkable feedstock adaptability.

The traditional classification of drought events into seasonal and flash types oversimplified the complexity and variability of global drought phenomena, limiting a deeper understanding of drought characteristics and their impacts on vegetation. To address this issue, soil moisture percentile methods and the Soil Moisture Anomaly Percentage Index (SMAPI) were employed to create time series for flash drought (FD) and seasonal drought (SD) events globally from 1981 to 2020. A novel categorization framework was proposed to subdivide the two basic drought categories into eight distinct drought types using a set relationship identification method. The results showed fluctuating trends in the frequencies of Independent FD and Inclusion FD, which declined rapidly after 2011 at rates of 0.05 and 0.04 times/year, respectively. Independent FD frequency was highest in humid areas and decreased with increasing aridity. The spatial distributions of Inclusion FD and SD were similar, with both frequencies highest in extremely arid areas and decreasing with increasing humidity. The frequency of Independent SD, which peaked in semi-arid areas, increased significantly after 2011 at a rate of 0.01 times/year. The occurrence of FD evolving into SD or emerging at the end of SD was rare, with a global average of 0.46 events/decade and little spatial variation. Between 1981 and 2020, FD showed a U-shaped trend in drought duration, while SD showed no clear pattern. The duration of FD showed little difference across arid and humid zones, but the duration of SD decreased significantly with increasing humidity. Vegetation responses to drought varied, with arid regions showing longer response time compared to humid regions. A positive correlation between temperature and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) during droughts was observed, while precipitation generally showed a negative correlation with SIF. Radiation had a minimal effect on SIF during droughts. The study offered a comprehensive categorization of drought events, enhancing our understanding of their spatiotemporal characteristics and vegetation responses on a global scale.

Ferroptosis is a form of cell death mediated by iron and lipid peroxidation (LPO). Recent studies have provided compelling evidence to support the involvement of ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD). Therefore, understanding the mechanisms that regulate ferroptosis in NDDs may improve disease management. Ferroptosis is regulated by multiple mechanisms, and different degradation pathways, including autophagy and the ubiquitinproteasome system (UPS), orchestrate the complex ferroptosis response by directly or indirectly regulating iron accumulation or lipid peroxidation. Ubiquitination plays a crucial role as a protein posttranslational modification in driving ferroptosis. Notably, E3 ubiquitin ligases (E3s) and deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) are key enzymes in the ubiquitin system, and their dysregulation is closely linked to the progression of NDDs. A growing body of evidence highlights the role of ubiquitin system enzymes in regulating ferroptosis sensitivity. However, reports on the interaction between ferroptosis and ubiquitin signaling in NDDs are scarce. In this review, we first provide a brief overview of the biological processes and roles of the UPS, summarize the core molecular mechanisms and potential biological functions of ferroptosis, and explore the pathophysiological relevance and therapeutic implications of ferroptosis in NDDs. In addition, reviewing the roles of E3s and DUBs in regulating ferroptosis in NDDs aims to provide new insights and strategies for the treatment of NDDs. These include E3- and DUB-targeted drugs and ferroptosis inhibitors, which can be used to prevent and ameliorate the progression of NDDs.

Cadmium (Cd) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) frequently coexist in farmlands, yet their synergistic toxicological impacts on terrestrial invertebrates remain unexplored. In this study, earthworms were exposed to artificial soils percolated with Cd (5 mg/kg), SMX (5 mg/kg) or combination of them for 7 days, followed by a 12-day elimination phase in uncontaminated soil. The uptake of Cd and SMX by the earthworms, along with their subcellular distribution, was meticulously analyzed. Additionally, a suite of biomarkers-including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and weight loss-were evaluated to assess the health status of the earthworms and the toxicological effects of the Cd and SMX mixture. Notably, the cotreatment with Cd and SMX resulted in a significantly higher weight loss in Eisenia fetida (41.25 %) compared to exposure to Cd alone (26.84 %). Moreover, the cotreatment group exhibited substantially higher concentrations of Cd in the total internal body, fraction C (cytosol), and fraction E (tissue fragments and cell membranes) in Eisenia fetida compared to Cd alone counterparts. The combined exposure also significantly elevated the SMX levels in the total body and fraction C compared with the SMX-only treated earthworms. Additionally, Eisenia fetida subjected to the combined treatment showed markedly increased activities of SOD, CAT, and MDA compared to those treated with Cd alone. The effect addition indices (EAIs), ranging from 1.00 to 2.23, unequivocally demonstrated a synergistic effect of the combined treatments. Interestingly, relocating the earthworms to clean soil did not mitigate the observed adverse effects. These findings underscore the increased risk posed by the Cd-SMX complex to terrestrial invertebrates in agricultural areas.

Water quality in surface bodies remains a pressing issue worldwide. While some regions have rich water quality data, less attention is given to areas that lack sufficient data. Therefore, it is crucial to explore novel ways of managing source-oriented surface water pollution in scenarios with infrequent data collection such as weekly or monthly. Here we showed sparse-dataset-based prediction of water pollution using machine learning. We investigated the efficacy of a traditional Recurrent Neural Network alongside three Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models, integrated with the Load Estimator (LOADEST). The research was conducted at a river-lake confluence, an area with intricate hydrological patterns. We found that the Self-Attentive LSTM (SA-LSTM) model outperformed the other three machine learning models in predicting water quality, achieving Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) scores of 0.71 for CODMn and 0.57 for NH3N when utilizing LOADEST-augmented water quality data (referred to as the SA-LSTM-LOADEST model). The SA-LSTM-LOADEST model improved upon the standalone SA-LSTM model by reducing the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) by 24.6% for CODMn and 21.3% for NH3N. Furthermore, the model maintained its predictive accuracy when data collection intervals were extended from weekly to monthly. Additionally, the SA-LSTM-LOADEST model demonstrated the capability to forecast pollution loads up to ten days in advance. This study shows promise for improving water quality modeling in regions with limited monitoring capabilities.

The practical application of high-energy density lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries is severely impeded by the notorious cycling stability and safety, which mainly comes from slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at cathodes, causing inferior redox overpotentials and reactive lithium metal in flammable liquid electrolyte. Herein, a bifunctional electrode, a safe gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), and a robust lithium anode are proposed to alleviate above problems. The bifunctional electrode is composed of N-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) and Co4N by in situ chemical vapor deposition self-catalyzed growth on carbon cloth (N-CNTs@Co4N@CC). The self-supporting, binder-free N-CNTs@Co4N@CC electrode has a strong and stable three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive structure, which provides interconnectivity between the active sites and the electrode to promote the transfer of electrons. Furthermore, the N-CNT-intertwined Co4N ensures efficient catalytic activity. Hence, the electrode demonstrates improved electrochemical properties even under a large current density (2000 mA g-1) and long cycling operation (250 cycles). Moreover, a highly safe and flexible rechargeable cell using the 3D N-CNTs@Co4N@CC electrode, GPE, and robust lithium anode design has been explored. The open circuit voltage is stable at ∼3.0 V even after 9800 cycles, which proves the mechanical durability of the integrated GPE cell. The stable cable-type Li-air battery was demonstrated to stably drive the light-emitting diodes (LEDs), highlighting the reliability for practical use.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the biological pathways related to deep learning radiomics (DLR) and lymph node metastasis (LNM) of breast cancer is still poorly understood. This study explored the value of DLR based on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) in LNM of invasive breast cancer. It also analyzed the biological significance of DLR phenotype based on genomics. METHODS: Two cohorts from the Cancer Imaging Archive project were used, one as the training cohort (TCGA-Breast, n = 88) and one as the validation cohort (Breast-MRI-NACT Pilot, n = 57). Radiomics and deep learning features were extracted from preoperative DCE-MRI. After dual selection by principal components analysis (PCA) and relief methods, radiomics and deep learning models for predicting LNM were constructed by the random forest (RF) method. A post-fusion strategy was used to construct the DLR nomograms (DLRNs) for predicting LNM. The performance of the models was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Delong test. In the training cohort, transcriptome data were downloaded from the UCSC Xena online database, and biological pathways related to the DLR phenotypes were identified. Finally, hub genes were identified to obtain DLR gene expression (RadDeepGene) scores. RESULTS: DLRNs were based on area under curve (AUC) evaluation (training cohort, AUC = 0.98; validation cohort, AUC = 0.87), which were higher than single radiomics models or GoogLeNet models. The Delong test (radiomics model, P = 0.04; GoogLeNet model, P = 0.01) also validated the above results in the training cohorts, but they were not statistically significant in the validation cohort. The GoogLeNet phenotypes were related to multiple classical tumor signaling pathways, characterizing the biological significance of immune response, signal transduction, and cell death. In all, 20 genes related to GoogLeNet phenotypes were identified, and the RadDeepGene score represented a high risk of LNM (odd ratio = 164.00, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: DLRNs combining radiomics and deep learning features of DCE-MRI images improved the preoperative prediction of LNM in breast cancer, and the potential biological characteristics of DLRN were identified through genomics.

H6N6 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have been widely detected in wild birds, poultry, and even mammals. Recently, H6N6 viruses were reported to be involved in the generation of H5 and H7 subtype viruses. To investigate the emergence, evolutionary pattern, and potential for an epidemic of H6N6 viruses, the complete genomes of 198 H6N6 viruses were analyzed, including 168 H6N6 viruses deposited in the NCBI and GISAID databases from inception to January 2019 and 30 isolates collected from China between November 2014 and January 2019. Using phylogenetic analysis, the 198 strains of H6N6 viruses were identified as 98 genotypes. Molecular clock analysis indicated that the evolution of H6N6 viruses in China was constant and not interrupted by selective pressure. Notably, the laboratory isolates reassorted with six subtype viruses: H6N2, H5N6, H7N9, H5N2, H4N2, and H6N8, resulting in nine novel H6N6 reassortment events. These results suggested that H6N6 viruses can act as an intermediary in the evolution of H5N6, H6N6, and H7N9 viruses. Animal experiments demonstrated that the 10 representative H6N6 viruses showed low pathogenicity in chickens and were capable of infecting mice without prior adaptation. Our findings suggest that H6N6 viruses play an important role in the evolution of AIVs, and it is necessary to continuously monitor and evaluate the potential epidemic of the H6N6 subtype viruses.

Osteoarthritis (OA) progression is highly associated with chondrocyte mitochondrial dysfunction and disorders of catabolism and anabolism of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the articular cartilage. The mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt), which is an integral component of the mitochondrial quality control (MQC) system, is essential for maintaining chondrocyte homeostasis. We successfully validated the pivotal role of activating transcription factor 5 (ATF5) in upregulating the UPRmt, mitigating IL-1ß-induced inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, and promoting balanced metabolism in articular cartilage ECM, proving its potential as a promising therapeutic target for OA. Modified mRNAs (modRNAs) have emerged as novel and efficient gene delivery vectors for nucleic acid therapeutic approaches. In this study, we combined Atf5-modRNA (modAtf5) with engineered exosomes derived from bone mesenchymal stem cells (ExmodAtf5) to exert cytoprotective effects on chondrocytes in articular cartilage via Atf5. However, the rapid localized metabolization of ExmodAtf5 limits its application. PLGA-PEG-PLGA (Gel), an injectable thermosensitive hydrogel, was used as a carrier of ExmodAtf5 (Gel@ExmodAtf5) to achieve a sustained release of ExmodAtf5. In vitro and in vivo, the use of Gel@ExmodAtf5 was shown to be a highly effective strategy for OA treatment. The in vivo therapeutic effect of Gel@ExmodAtf5 was evidenced by the preservation of the intact cartilage surface, low OARSI scores, fewer osteophytes, and mild subchondral bone sclerosis and cystic degeneration. Consequently, the combination of ExmodAtf5 and PLGA-PEG-PLGA could significantly enhance the therapeutic efficacy and prolong the exosome release. In addition, the mitochondrial protease ClpP enhanced chondrocyte autophagy by modulating the mTOR/Ulk1 pathway. As a result of our research, Gel@ExmodAtf5 can be considered to be effective at alleviating the progression of OA.

BACKGROUND: Glioma is a primary tumor originating from the central nervous system, and despite ongoing efforts to improve treatment, its overall survival rate remains low. There are a limited number of reports regarding the clinical grading, prognostic impact, and utility of chemokines. Therefore, conducting a meta-analysis is necessary to obtain convincing and conclusive results. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using various databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Embase, Ovid Medline, CNKI, Wanfang Database, VIP, and CBM. The search encompassed articles published from the inception of the databases until March 2024. The estimated odds ratio (ORs), standard mean difference (SMDs), and hazard ratio (HR) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated to assess the predictive value of chemokine and receptor levels in glioma risk. Additionally, heterogeneity tests and bias tests were performed to evaluate the reliability of the findings. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included a total of 36 studies, involving 2,480 patients diagnosed with glioma. The results revealed a significant association between the expression levels of CXCR4 (n = 8; OR = 22.28; 95 % CI = 11.47-43.30; p = 0.000), CXCL12 (n = 4; OR = 10.69; 95 % CI = 7.03-16.24; p = 0.000), CCL2 (n = 6; SMD = -0.83; 95 % CI = -0.98--0.67; p = 0.000), CXCL8 (n = 3; SMD = 0.75; 95 % CI = 0.47-1.04; p = 0.000), CXCR7 (n = 3; OR = 20.66; 95 % CI = 10.20-41.82; p = 0.000), CXCL10 (n = 2; SMD = 3.27; 95 % CI = 2.91-3.62; p = 0.000) and the risk of glioma. Additionally, a significant correlation was observed between CXCR4 (n = 8; OR = 4.39; 95 % CI = 3.04-6.32; p = 0.000), (n = 6; SMD = 1.37; 95 % CI = 1.09-1.65; p = 0.000), CXCL12 (n = 6; OR = 6.30; 95 % CI = 3.87-10.25; p = 0.000), (n = 5; ES = 2.25; 95 % CI = 1.15-3.34; p = 0.041), CCL2 (n = 3; OR = 9.65; 95 % CI = 4.55-20.45; p = 0.000), (n = 4; SMD = -1.47; 95 % CI = -1.68--1.26; p = 0.000), and CCL18 (n = 3; SMD = 1.62; 95 % CI = 1.30-1.93; p = 0.000) expression levels and high-grade glioma (grades 3-4). Furthermore, CXCR4 (HR = 2.38, 95 % CI = 1.66-3.40; p = 0.000) exhibited a strong correlation with poor overall survival (OS) rates in glioma patients. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study showed a robust association between elevated levels of CXCR4, CXCL12, CCL2, CXCL8, CXCL10 and CXCR7 with a higher risk of glioma. Furthermore, the WHO grading system was validated by the strong correlation shown between higher expression of CXCR4, CXCL12, CCL2, and CCL18 and WHO high-grade gliomas (grades 3-4). Furthermore, the results of the meta-analysis suggested that CXCR4 might be a helpful biomarker for predicting the worse prognosis of glioma patients.

Recent studies revealed that CD39 was highly expressed in tumor-specific CD4+ tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). However, the divergent function of CD39+ T cells remains to be elucidated in colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, T cells from CRC patients and tumor-bearing mice were isolated to evaluate the function of CD39 in T cells. We found that CD39 was elevated in intratumoral T cells from CRC patients, and negatively correlated with cytokine secretion capacity. T cell activation induced CD39 expression, and CD39+ T cells produced more IFN-γ in response to CRC tumor antigens. In addition, CD39+ T cells in the spleens of tumor-bearing mice exhibited a stronger anti-tumor activity in vitro than CD39- T cells, but there was no significant difference in the anti-tumor activities between CD39- TILs and CD39+ TILs. Moreover, we found that CD39+ T cells expressed higher checkpoint molecules and contained a higher proportion of Treg cells than CD39- T cells, suggesting that CD39+ T cells may be correlated with an immunosuppressive phenotype. And CD39 expression on T cells could convert pro-inflammatory eATP to immunosuppressive eADO. However, both T cells from the vaccinated-wild-type mice and CD39-/- mice could recognize and eliminate tumor cells in vitro, and adoptive transfer of these T cells resulted in tumor growth inhibition in tumor-bearing mice. In conclusion, our study revealed the divergent functions of CD39+ T cells, which were reactive to tumor antigen but exhibited a dysfunctional phenotype.

Two cases of acquired port-wine stain (APWS) at lower extremity were treated with hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) and 532 nm LED green light-mediated photodynamic therapy (HMME-PDT). No serious adverse reactions were observed during or post-treatment period. Five-month follow-up showed significant reduction of red patches after a single HMME-PDT treatment in both cases.

OBJECTIVES: Whether the application of MBP plus cannulated screws works for old femoral neck fractures (OFNF) is unknown. The purpose of this study is to present a case series of OFNF in young adults using calcar buttress plate and three cannulated screws with autologous iliac bone grafts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of eleven young patients (6 males and 5 females) with femoral neck fractures who were treated with open reduction and internal fixation at a single center between 2013 and 2021. The subjects had trauma-to-surgery intervals longer than 3weeks and all were fixed with a calcar buttress plate combined with three cannulated screws, which were supplemented by autologous iliac bone grafts. RESULTS: All eleven cases achieved radiological union under the surgery technique, which occurred on average at 4.46±1.29months after surgery. Complications included femoral neck shortening in all cases, heterotopic ossification in three cases, and osteonecrosis of the femoral head in two cases. One patient with osteonecrosis of the femoral head received total hip arthroplasty. In follow-ups of 24-52months, the median Harris hip score was 81.64±15.39. CONCLUSIONS: The medial buttress plate in combination with three cannulated screws and iliac autograft may be a good choice for treating old femoral neck fractures in young adults. The transport of nanoplastics (NPs) in porous media has received a lot of attention, but the studies on the long-term release of NPs retained in porous media and the particle fracture during this process are seriously lacking. For filling this deficiency, we examined the individual or synergistic effects of surfactants, natural organic matters (NOMs), antibiotics, and bacteria on the desorption, long-term release, and particle fracture behaviors of polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) retained in porous media. It was found that the change in hydrophilicity of PS-NPs dominated the long-term release of PS-NPs retained in porous media when surfactants were present. In the single system of surfactants and the dual system of surfactants and NOMs, the release of PS-NPs were improved owing to the increasing hydrophilicity of PS-NPs, although cationic surfactants also reduced the electrostatic repulsion between PS-NPs and porous media. Increasing antibiotic concentration reduced the electrostatic repulsion between PS-NPs and porous media to inhibit the release of PS-NPs. When bacteria were present whether containing antibiotics or not, the effects on roughness of PS-NPs dominated the release of PS-NPs. The effects of surfactants and NOMs on the PS-NP desorption were similar with the long-term release, with changes in hydrophilicity dominating the process. Whereas the effects of antibiotics and bacteria on the PS-NP desorption were different with the long-term release. Surfactants and NOMs in the presence of surfactants inhibited the fracture of PS-NPs by increasing the hydrophilicity of PS-NPs brought about the coating of water molecules on PS-NPs for protection. Antibiotics had no significant effects on the fracture of PS-NPs due to unaltered vertical forces on PS-NPs and no protective effect. Bacteria in the presence or absence of antibiotics inhibited the fracture of PS-NPs by coating PS-NPs retained in porous media to protect PS-NPs from fracture.

OBJECTIVES: Public's interest in noninvasive skin rejuvenation treatments continues to grow. The advantage of combination therapy lies in that it can target different aspects of skin rejuvenation. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of microfocused ultrasound (MFU) combined with delicate pulsed light (DPL) for facial rejuvenation. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with facial relaxation were enrolled. All patients received whole-face MFU treatment, and one side of the face was randomly assigned to receive DPL. MFU treatment was performed at Months 0 and 3, while DPL treatment was performed at Months 1, 2, 4, and 5. The length and angle of the nasolabial fold and perioral wrinkles, melanin index (MI), erythema index (EI), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and follow-up time were recorded at Months 0, 3, and 6. Side effects were recorded during treatment and each follow-up visit. RESULTS: Twenty patients successfully completed the study. At the sixth month, the average length of perioral wrinkles and nasolabial folds on the combined side decreased by 11.5% (pwithin < 0.001) and 6.5% (pwithin = 0.011), while 8.3% (pwithin = 0.012) and 3.8% (pwithin = 0.02) on the MFU side. Compared with MFU treatment alone, the combined treatment also showed significant improvements in nasolabial fold angle (from 28.8 ± 3.4° to 32.7 ± 5.0°) and perioral wrinkle angle (from 39.3 ± 5.0° to 43.7 ± 5.1°). In addition, the combined side had greater benefits than the MFU side in improving MI, EI, TEWL, and skin elasticity (pbetween < 0.05). Except for one patient who withdrew due to increased skin sensitivity after MFU treatment, other subjects did not experience permanent or serious side effects. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of MFU and DPL for facial rejuvenation treatment is safe and effective. The combined treatment has better efficacy in skin firmness, and improving skin tone.

Macroalgae biomass has been considered as a promising renewable feedstock for lactic acid production owing to its lignin-free, high carbohydrate content and high productivity. Herein, the D-lactic acid production from red macroalgae Gelidium amansii by Pediococcus acidilactici was investigated. The fermentable sugars in G. amansii acid-prehydrolysate were mainly galactose and glucose with a small amounts of xylose. P. acidilactici could simultaneously ferment the mixed sugars of galactose, glucose and xylose into D-lactic acid at high yield (0.90 g/g), without carbon catabolite repression (CCR). The assimilating pathways of these sugars in P. acidilactici were proposed based on the whole genome sequences. Simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) of the pretreated and biodetoxified G. amansii was also conducted, a record high of D-lactic acid (41.4 g/L) from macroalgae biomass with the yield of 0.34 g/g dry feedstock was achieved. This study provided an important biorefinery strain for D-lactic acid production from macroalgae biomass.

The multi-window time-frequency reassignment helps to improve the time-frequency resolution of bark-frequency spectral coefficient (BFSC) analysis of heart sounds. For this purpose, a new heart sound classification algorithm combining feature extraction based on multi-window time-frequency reassignment BFSC with deep learning was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the randomly intercepted heart sound segments are preprocessed with amplitude normalization, the heart sounds were framed and time-frequency rearrangement based on short-time Fourier transforms were computed using multiple orthogonal windows. A smooth spectrum estimate is calculated by arithmetic averaging each of the obtained independent spectra. Finally, the BFSC of reassignment spectrum is extracted as a feature by the Bark filter bank. In this paper, convolutional network and recurrent neural network are used as classifiers for model comparison and performance evaluation of the extracted features. Eventually, the multi-window time-frequency rearrangement improved BFSC method extracts more discriminative features, with a binary classification accuracy of 0.936, a sensitivity of 0.946, and a specificity of 0.922. These results present that the algorithm proposed in this paper does not need to segment the heart sounds and randomly intercepts the heart sound segments, which greatly simplifies the computational process and is expected to be used for screening of congenital heart disease.
