BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis remains an obstacle for improving the outcome of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). DNA methylation changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) could reflect immune response to tumorigenesis, providing the theoretical basis for early cancer diagnosis based on immune cell profiling. METHODS: This multi-center study evaluated the DNA methylation patterns based on PBMCs samples from 1115 individuals at nine medical centers. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiling of PBMCs in a discovery cohort (35 LUAD patients and 50 healthy controls) was performed using Illumina 850K microarray. Candidate differentially methylated CpG positions (DMPs) were selected and validated in a two-step DMPs screening cohort (65 LUAD patients and 80 healthy controls) by pyrosequencing and multiple target region methylation enrichment sequencing (MTRMES). Then, an early LUAD Diagnostic Panel (LDP score) based on multi-site methylation-specific chip-based digital PCR was constructed in a training set and then confirmed in a validation set from the LDP score development cohort (389 AIS/stage I LUAD patients and 293 healthy controls). Besides, we included 157 other cancer patients, including 52 gastric cancer (GC) patients, 50 breast cancer (BC) patients, and 55 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients to assess the specificity of LDP score. In addition, we also evaluated the early warning ability of LDP score for LUAD in a prospective cohort (46 people who were at high-risk of developing LC). RESULTS: A total of 1415 LUAD-specific DMPs were identified. Then, six DMPs were selected for validation and three DMPs were finally verified. The LDP score was constructed by combining the three DMPs, age, and gender, and showed an AUC of 0.916, sensitivity of 88.17%, and specificity of 80.20% in combined set, outperforming traditional methods, such as CEA and CT (detection rate: 87.79% vs. 4.69%; 87.79% vs. 35.21%). This diagnostic performance was confirmed in sub-types of LUAD with clinical challenges, such as 6-20 mm LUAD (AUC: 0.914, 95%CI: 0.889-0.934) and ground-glass nodules (AUC: 0.916, 95%CI: 0.889-0.938). Importantly, our LDP score had significant improvement in terms of selecting high-risk individuals who should receive low-dose computed tomography (87.80% vs. 9.28%). Remarkably, LDP score could predict LUAD around two years before clinical diagnosis in our prospective cohort. CONCLUSIONS: The novel developed LDP score represented a convenient and effective assay for the detection of AIS/stage I LUAD with high sensitivity and specificity, and had demonstrated unique advantages over traditional detection methods.

The harvesting of microalgae is the main bottleneck of its large-scale biomass production, and seeking an efficient, green, and low-cost microalgae harvesting technology is one of the urgent problems to be solved. Microbubble air flotation has been proven to be an effective measure, but the mechanisms of microbubbles-algal cell attachment are still unclear. In this study, microbubble air flotation was used as a harvesting method for Microcystis cultured in agricultural wastewater. The process mechanism of microbubble air flotation harvesting microalgae in wastewater was fully revealed from three aspects (the design of bubble formation, the adhesion law, and the recovery rate of microalgae under different working conditions). The results show that the length of the release pipe is the main factor affecting the proportion of microbubbles with a particle size of less than 50 µm. In the process of adhesion, when the particle size of microbubbles is 0.6-1.7 times the size of Microcystis, the adhesion efficiency of microbubbles to Microcystis is the highest. Under the conditions of pressure 0.45 MPa, gas-liquid ratio 5%, and release pipe length 100 cm, the harvesting performance of Microcystis was the best. Microbubble air flotation has better harvesting performance (63.5%, collection rate) of Microcystis with higher density. By understanding the mechanism of microbubble flotation, the technical parameters of microbubble flotation for harvesting energy microalgae are optimized to provide support for the development of efficient and low-cost devices and equipment for collecting microalgae.

CONTEXT: Sarcopenia has been identified as a potential predictor of poor prognosis in various types of cancer. However, the impact of pretreatment sarcopenia and the reduction of skeletal muscle mass during treatment on survival outcomes of patients with cervical cancer is still not well understood. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of pretreatment sarcopenia and treatment-associated muscle loss on survival outcomes in patients with cervical cancer. DATA SOURCES: The PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for studies exploring the relationship between muscle loss and the prognosis of cervical cancer until January 1, 2023. DATA EXTRACTION: The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were extracted. DATA ANALYSIS: The data were analyzed using R software. The studies' quality was assessed using the Quality in Prognostic Studies tool. Twelve observational studies involving 1498 patients with cervical cancer were included in the analysis, with a prevalence of sarcopenia ranging from 24.8% to 57.5%. Sarcopenia was an independent predictor of poor OS (HR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.28-2.21; P < .01) and PFS (HR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.19-1.98; P < .01) in patients with cervical cancer. Additionally, the decrease in skeletal muscle during treatment was also significantly related to the OS (HR, 4.46; 95% CI, 2.87-6.94; P < .01) and PFS (HR, 2.89; 95% CI. 1.83-4.55; P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of pretreatment sarcopenia was high among patients with cervical cancer. Pretreatment sarcopenia and skeletal muscle loss during treatment both negatively affected prognosis in cervical cancer.

In diagnostic radiology, the air kerma is an essential parameter. Radiologists consider the air kerma, when calculating organ doses and dangers to patients. The intensity of the radiation beam is represented by the air kerma, which is the value of energy wasted by a photon as it travels through air. Because of the heel effect in X-ray sources, air kerma varies throughout the field of medical imaging systems. One possible contributor to this discrepancy is the X-ray tube's voltage. In this study, an approach has been proposed for predicting the air kerma anywhere inside the field of X-ray beams utilized in medical diagnostic imaging systems. As a first step, a diagnostic imaging system was modelled using the Monte Carlo N-Particle platform. We used a tungsten target and aluminum and beryllium filters of varying thicknesses to recreate the X-ray tube. The air kerma has been measured in different parts of the conical X-ray beam that is working at 30, 50, 70, 90, 110, 130, and 150 kV. This gives enough data for training neural networks. The voltage of the X-ray tube, filter type, filter thickness, and the coordinates of each point used to calculate the air kerma were all inputs to the MLP neural network. The MLP architecture, known for its significant advancements in research and expanding applications, was trained to predict the quantity of air kerma as its output. Specifically, by considering X-ray tube filters of varying thicknesses, the trained MLP model demonstrated its capability to accurately predict the air kerma at every point within the X-ray field for a range of X-ray tube voltages typically used in medical diagnostic radiography (30-150 kV).

Influenza B virus (IBV) stands as a paradox, often overshadowed by its more notorious counterpart, influenza A virus (IAV). Yet, it remains a captivating and elusive subject of scientific inquiry. Influenza B is important because it causes seasonal flu outbreaks that can lead to severe respiratory illnesses, including bronchitis, pneumonia, and exacerbations of chronic conditions like asthma. Limitations in the influenza B virus's epidemiological, immunological, and etiological evolution must be addressed promptly. This comprehensive review covers evolutionary epidemiology and pathogenesis, host-virus interactions, viral isolation and propagation, advanced molecular detection assays, vaccine composition and no animal reservoir for influenza B virus. Complex viral etiology begins with intranasal transmission of influenza B virus with the release of a segmented RNA genome that attacks host cell machinery for transcription and translation within the nucleus and the release of viral progeny. Influenza B virus prevalence in domesticated and wild canines, sea mammals, and birds is frequent, yet there is no zoonosis. The periodic circulation of influenza B virus indicates a 1-3-year cycle for monophyletic strain replacement within the Victoria strain due to frequent antigenic drift in the HA near the receptor-binding site (RBS), while the antigenic stability of Yamagata viruses portrays a more conservative evolutionary pattern. Additionally, this article outlines contemporary antiviral strategies, including pharmacological interventions and vaccination efforts. This article serves as a resource for researchers, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in the mysterious nature of the influenza B virus. It provides valuable insights and knowledge essential for comprehending and effectively countering this viral foe, which continues to pose a significant public health threat.

BACKGROUND: Data on long-term cancer survivors treated with apatinib are lacking. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of long-term cancer survivors after apatinib-based therapy, and to know about their satisfaction degree with apatinib and severity of depression and insomnia. METHODS: Patients with solid tumors who had received apatinib-based therapy for at least 5 years were invited to complete an online questionnaire. Characteristics of patients and treatment, knowledge of apatinib, satisfaction degree, and severity of depression and insomnia assessed by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Insomnia Severity Index were collected. RESULTS: Between December 8, 2023 and March 1, 2024, a total of 436 patients completed the online questionnaire. Most patients were satisfied with the efficacy (96.6%) and safety (93.1%) of apatinib, were willing to continue apatinib treatment (99.5%), and would recommend apatinib to other patients (93.3%). Continuous apatinib treatment resulted in significant negative impact on daily life, work, or study in only two (0.5%) patients. Almost all patients currently had no or mild depression (97.0%) and insomnia (97.9%) problems. The most common patient-reported adverse events were hand-foot syndrome (21.3%) and hypertension (18.3%). CONCLUSIONS: Our survey showed a high satisfaction degree with apatinib in long-term cancer survivors. Long-term apatinib treatment resulted in almost no negative impact on patient's quality of life.

Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) is increasingly recognized as a vital sustainable practice in urban environments, aimed at enhancing water conservation and reducing energy consumption. This study introduces an innovative integration of nano-composite materials as Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) into RWH systems to elevate water treatment efficiency and assess the resulting environmental and energy-saving benefits. Utilizing a regression analysis approach with Support Vector Machines (SVM) and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), this study will reach the study objective. In this study, the inputs are building attributes, environmental parameters, sociodemographic factors, and the algorithms SVM and KNN. At the same time, the outputs are predicted energy consumption, visual comfort outcomes, ROC-AUC values, and Kappa Indices. The integration of AgNPs into RWH systems demonstrated substantial environmental and operational benefits, achieving a 57% reduction in microbial content and 20% reductions in both chemical usage and energy consumption. These improvements highlight the potential of AgNPs to enhance water safety and reduce the environmental impact of traditional water treatments, making them a viable alternative for sustainable water management. Additionally, the use of a hybrid SVM-KNN model effectively predicted building energy usage and visual comfort, with high accuracy and precision, underscoring its utility in optimizing urban building environments for sustainability and comfort.

CONTEXT: Cachexia is associated with poor survival rates. In the clinical setting, the diagnosis of cancer cachexia is challenging. The cachexia index (CXI), a new index for predicting survival time, is a promising tool for diagnosing cancer cachexia; however, its efficacy in predicting patient survival has not been validated. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis and systematic review aimed to explore the CXI's prognostic value in patients with cancer. DATA SOURCES: The PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies to determine the association between CXI findings and prognosis. DATA EXTRACTION: The outcomes were overall survival (OS), progression-, disease-, and recurrence-free survival (PFS/DFS/RFS) rates, and the rate of complete response. DATA ANALYSIS: The QUality In Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool was used to evaluate the quality of the included trials. This meta-analysis comprised 14 studies involving 2777 patients. A low CXI was associated with decreased OS (hazard ratio [HR] 2.34, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.01-2.72; P < .001), PFS/DFS/RFS (HR 1.93, 95% CI 1.68-2.22; P < .001), and complete response (odds ratio [OR] 0.49, 95% CI 0.36-0.66; P < .001). Patients with a low CXI had a lower body mass index (mean difference [MD] -0.75, 95% CI -1.00 to 0.50; P < .001), skeletal muscle index (standardized MD -0.80, 95% CI -0.98 to -0.61; P < .001), and serum albumin level (MD -0.23, 95% CI -0.26 to -0.20; P < .001); and a higher neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (MD 1.88, 95% CI 1.29-2.47; P < .001) and more advanced disease stages (OR 0.80, 95% CI 0.71-0.91; P = .001). CONCLUSION: A low CXI was found to be associated with poor survival in patients with cancer. While the CXI is a promising marker for predicting cancer cachexia, further studies are required to verify its usefulness.

This work combined the stability of the porous structure of metal-organic frameworks with the strong reducibility of nano zero-valent iron, for the controllable integration of NZVI into MOFs to utilize the advantages of each component with enhancing the rapid decontamination and scavenging of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Hence, four kinds of MOFs/NZVI composites namely ZIF67/NZVI, MOF74/NZVI, MIL101(Fe)/NZVI, CuBTC/NZVI, were prepared for Cr(VI) capture. The results indicated that the stable structure of ZIF67, MOF74, MIL101(Fe), CuBTC, was beneficial for the dispersion of NZVI that could help more close contact between MOFs/NZVI reactive sites and Cr(VI), subsequently, MOFs/NZVI was proved to be better scavengers for Cr(VI) scavenging than NZVI alone. The Cr(VI) capture achieved the maximum adsorption capacity at pH ~ 4.0, which might be due to the participation of more H+ in the reaction and better corrosion of NZVI at lower pH. Mechanism investigation demonstrated synergy of adsorption, reduction and surface precipitation resulted in enhanced Cr(VI) scavenging, and Fe(0), dissolved and surface-bound Fe(II) were the primary reducing species. The findings of this investigation indicated that the as-prepared composites of ZIF67/NZVI, MOF74/NZVI, MIL101(Fe)/NZVI, CuBTC/NZVI, with high oxidation resistance and excellent reactivity, could provide reference for the decontamination and purification of actual Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an underlying cause of lower respiratory illnesses in children, elderly and immunocompromised adults. RSV contains multiple structural and non-structural proteins with two major glycoproteins that control the initial phase of infection, fusion glycoprotein and the attachment (G) glycoprotein. G protein attaches to the ciliated cells of airways initiating the infection. The hypervariable G protein plays a vital role in evolution of RSV strains. We employed multiple bioinformatics tools on systematically accessed large-scale data to evaluate mutations, evolutionary history, and phylodynamics of RSV. Mutational analysis of central conserved region (CCR) on G protein-coding sequences between 163 and 189 positions revealed frequent mutations at site 178 in human RSV (hRSV) A while arginine to glutamine substitutions at site 180 positions in hRSV B, remained prevalent from 2009 to 2014. Phylogenetic analysis indicates multiple signature mutations within G protein responsible for diversification of clades. The USA and China have highest number of surveillance records, followed by Kenya. Markov Chain Monte Carlo Bayesian skyline plot revealed that RSV A evolved steadily from 1990 to 2000, and rapidly between 2003 and 2005. Evolution of RSV B continued from 2003 to 2022, with a high evolution stage from 2016 to 2020. Throughout evolution, cysteine residues maintained their strict conserved states while CCR has an entropy value of 0.0039(±0.0005). This study concludes the notion that RSV G glycoprotein is continuously evolving while the CCR region of G protein maintains its conserved state providing an opportunity for CCR-specific monoclonal antibodys (mAbs) and inhibitors as potential candidates for immunoprophylaxis.

A straightforward methodology for the assembly of polysubstituted naphthalenes from ortho-alkynyl benzyl alcohols, enabled by using catalytic amounts of Tf2O, has been developed. This transformation not only features transition-metal free and without using other bases and additives but also provides a new synthetic application for ortho-alkynyl benzyl alcohols, i.e., as C6 synthons for the construction of PAHs.

Based on the concept of source separation of brown water (BW, human feces with flushing water) and yellow water (urine) in rural area, anaerobic co-digestion of BW with agricultural waste is a promising and effective method for rural waste treatment and resource recovery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of different agricultural wastes (peanut straw (PST), peanut shell (PSH), swine wastewater acting as co-substrate for anaerobic co-digestion with BW, and the relative mechanisms were explored. When the mixed ratio was uniformly set as 1:1 (mass ratio, measured by volatile solid (VS)) and initial VS load as 20 g/L, the maximum cumulative methane production obtained by co-digestion (21 days) of BW and PST was 688 mL/g-VS, which performed better than the individual substrates (341 mL/g-VS), as well as the average of the sole BW and sole PST groups (531.2 mL/g-VS). The most impactful advantage was ascribed to the promotion of hydrolytic and acidogenic enzyme activities. The addition of PST also reduced the production of endogenous humus, which is difficult for biodegradation. Microbial community analysis showed that different co-substrates would affect the microbial community composition in the reactor. The relative abundance of hydrolytic acidogens in the PST and PSH co-digestion groups were higher than that in the SW co-digestion and sole BW groups, and the methanogenic archaea were dominated by the acetate-trophic Methanotrichaceae. The overall results suggest that anaerobic co-digestion is a feasible method, and co-digestion of BW and PST can improve methane production potential.

Objective: The objective of this work is to design and fabricate a novel multifunctional nanocarrier combining thrombus-targeted imaging and ultrasound-mediated drug delivery for the theranostics of thrombotic diseases. Impact Statement: This study develops a new technology that can accurately visualize the thrombus and deliver drugs with controllable properties to diagnose and treat thrombotic diseases. Introduction: Thrombotic diseases are a serious threat to human life and health. The diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic diseases have always been a challenge. In recent years, nanomedicine has brought new ideas and new methods for the theranostics of thrombotic diseases. However, there are also many problems need to be solved, such as biosafety and stability of nanocarriers, early diagnosis, and timely treatment of thrombotic diseases, difficulty in clinical translation. Methods: The S1P@CD-PLGA-rtPA nanobubbles (NBs) were prepared by integrating sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)-loaded poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) NBs, cyclodextrin (CD), sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), and recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA). Results: S1P@CD-PLGA-rtPA NBs had rapid and excellent thrombosis targeting imaging performance based on the specific interaction of S1P-S1PR1 (sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 1). Furthermore, S1P@CD-PLGA-rtPA NBs that specifically targeting to the thrombosis regions could also respond to external ultrasound to achieve accurate and efficient delivery of rtPA to enhance the thrombolysis effectiveness and efficiency. Conclusion: This study proposes a new idea and strategy of targeting thrombus in rats via the specific interaction of S1P-S1PR1. On this basis, the acoustic response properties of bubble carriers could be fully utilized by combining thrombus-specific targeted imaging and ultrasound-mediated drug delivery for effective thrombolysis, which is expected to be applied in targeted diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic diseases in the future.

Recently, aqueous zinc-ion batteries with conversion mechanisms have received wide attention in energy storage systems on account of excellent specific capacity, high power density, and energy density. Unfortunately, some characteristics of cathode material, zinc anode, and electrolyte still limit the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries possessing conversion mechanism. Consequently, this paper provides a detailed summary of the development for numerous aqueous zinc-based batteries: zinc-sulfur (Zn-S) batteries, zinc-selenium (Zn-Se) batteries, zinc-tellurium (Zn-Te) batteries, zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries, and zinc-bromine (Zn-Br2) batteries. Meanwhile, the reaction conversion mechanism of zinc-based batteries with conversion mechanism and the research progress in the investigation of composite cathode, zinc anode materials, and selection of electrolytes are systematically introduced. Finally, this review comprehensively describes the prospects and outlook of aqueous zinc-ion batteries with conversion mechanism, aiming to promote the rapid development of aqueous zinc-based batteries.

Cancer cachexia is a systemic metabolic syndrome characterized by involuntary weight loss, and muscle and adipose tissue wasting. Mechanisms underlying cachexia remain poorly understood. Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), a multi-functional cytokine, has been suggested as a cachexia-inducing factor. In a transgenic mouse model with conditional LIF expression, systemic elevation of LIF induces cachexia. LIF overexpression decreases de novo lipogenesis and disrupts lipid homeostasis in the liver. Liver-specific LIF receptor knockout attenuates LIF-induced cachexia, suggesting that LIF-induced functional changes in the liver contribute to cachexia. Mechanistically, LIF overexpression activates STAT3 to downregulate PPARα, a master regulator of lipid metabolism, leading to the downregulation of a group of PPARα target genes involved in lipogenesis and decreased lipogenesis in the liver. Activating PPARα by fenofibrate, a PPARα agonist, restores lipid homeostasis in the liver and inhibits LIF-induced cachexia. These results provide valuable insights into cachexia, which may help develop strategies to treat cancer cachexia.

RESUMO

Cetuximab [the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeting mAb] improves clinical outcomes when added to standard chemotherapy used in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Patients with hotspot mutations in Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene ( KRAS ) mutation in exon 2 were not recommended to be treated with cetuximab. However, there is still a lack of clinical data for those unreported non-hotspot KRAS mutations in exon 2 and their response to cetuximab. In this study, we reported a 35-year-old woman who was diagnosed with stage IVA CRC with liver metastases. An exceptionally uncommon KRASP34R mutation in KRAS exon 2 was detected in tumor specimens by next-generation sequencing. This patient obtained limited benefit from first-line chemotherapy and did not respond to cetuximab in the second-line course. In the third-line course, the patient also did not respond to the combination treatment of furaquitinib and cindilimab. The patient died 8 months after treatment initiation. In this study, we found amplification of the rare oncogenic KRASP34R was not only associated with an aggressive phenotype, but also supported cancer resistance to cetuximab, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neuroinflammatory demyelinating disease, mediated by pathogenic T helper 17 (Th17) cells. However, the therapeutic effect is accompanied by the fluctuation of the proportion and function of Th17 cells, which prompted us to find the key regulator of Th17 differentiation in MS. Here, we demonstrated that the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM-2), a modulator of pattern recognition receptors on innate immune cells, was highly expressed on pathogenic CD4-positive T lymphocyte (CD4+ T) cells in both patients with MS and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse models. Conditional knockout of Trem-2 in CD4+ T cells significantly alleviated the disease activity and reduced Th17 cell infiltration, activation, differentiation, and inflammatory cytokine production and secretion in EAE mice. Furthermore, with Trem-2 knockout in vivo experiments and in vitro inhibitor assays, the TREM-2/zeta-chain associated protein kinase 70 (ZAP70)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signal axis was essential for Th17 activation and differentiation in EAE progression. In conclusion, TREM-2 is a key regulator of pathogenic Th17 in EAE mice, and this sheds new light on the potential of this therapeutic target for MS.

Dark pericarp disease (DPD), a physiological disorder induced by excess Manganese (Mn) in litchi, severely impacts the appearance and its economic value. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of DPD, this study investigated the variations of phenolic compound, antioxidant defense system, subcellular structure, and transcriptome profiles in both normal fruit and dark pericarp fruit (DPF) at three developmental stages (green, turning, and maturity) of 'Guiwei' litchi. The results reveal that excess Mn in DPF pericarp resulted in a significant increase in reactive oxygen species, especially H2O2, and subsequent alterations in antioxidant enzyme activities. Notably, SOD (EC 1.15.1.1) activity at the green stage, along with POD (EC 1.11.1.7) and APX (EC 1.11.1.11) activities at the turning and the maturity stages, and GST (EC 2.5.1.18) activity during fruit development, were markedly higher in DPF. Cell injury was observed in pericarp, facilitating the formation of dark materials in DPF. Transcriptome profiling further reveals that genes involved in flavonoid and anthocyanin synthesis were up-regulated during the green stage but down-regulated during the turning and maturity stages. In contrast, PAL (EC 4.3.1.24), C4H (EC 1.14.14.91), 4CL (EC 6.2.1.12), CAD (EC 1.1.1.195), and particularly POD, were up-regulated, leading to reduced flavonoid and anthocyanin accumulation and increased lignin content in DPF pericarp. The above suggests that the antioxidant system and phenolic metabolism jointly resisted the oxidative stress induced by Mn stress. We speculate that phenols, terpenes, or their complexes might be the substrates of the dark substances in DPF pericarp, but more investigations are needed to identify them.

Human B cell immortalization that maintains the constant growth characteristics and antibody expression of B cells in vitro is very critical for the development of antibody drugs and products for the diagnosis and bio-therapeutics of human diseases. Human B cell immortalization methods include Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) transformation, Simian virus 40 (SV40) virus infection, in vitro genetic modification, and activating CD40, etc. Immortalized human B cells produce monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) very efficiently, and the antibodies produced in this way can overcome the immune rejection caused by heterologous antibodies. It is an effective way to prepare mAbs and an important method for developing therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. Currently, the US FDA has approved more than 100 mAbs against a wide range of illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, and neurological disorders. This paper reviews the research progress of human B cell immortalization, its methods, and future directions as it is a powerful tool for the development of monoclonal antibody preparation technology.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is perceived as a promising technology for freshwater production owing to its environmentally friendly nature and low energy consumption. To date, the development of high-performance electrode materials represents the foremost challenge for CDI technology. In this work, the porous bismuthene/MXene (P-Bi-ene/MXene) heterostructure was synthesized using a simple interfacial self-assembly method with two-dimensional (2D) bismuthene and Ti3C2Tx MXene. Within the P-Bi-ene/MXene heterostructure, the porous structure can increase the active site and facilitate ion transport. Simultaneously, MXene effectively enhances the conductivity of the heterostructure, resulting in accelerating electron transport. Due to these attributes, the P-Bi-ene/MXene heterostructure demonstrates high desalination capacity (90.0 mg/g), fast desalination rate, and good cycling performance. The simple self-assembly strategy between 2D/2D materials described herein may offer inspirations for the synthesis of innovative electrode materials with high performance.
