Introduction: Studies examining the relationships among suicidal ideation, emotional vulnerability, and depressive symptoms are scarce. This study examined the effects of emotional vulnerability and depressive symptoms on suicidal ideation among Japanese university students. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted with 370 Japanese university students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Results: In the multiple regression analysis, depressive symptoms were significant (ß = .46, p <.001) but emotional vulnerability was not (ß = .05, p = .318). A significant interaction emerged between emotional vulnerability and depressive symptoms (ß = .22, p <.001). The model's R 2 value was.31 (p <.001). Simple slopes tests revealed the impact of depressive symptoms on suicidal ideation, even with low emotional vulnerability (b = .06, ß = .27, p <.001), and a higher impact with high emotional vulnerability (b = .15, ß = .65, p <.001). Discussion: The negative interaction between emotional vulnerability and depressive symptoms may heighten suicidal ideation among Japanese university students. Interventions targeting emotional vulnerability may help reduce suicidal ideation and achieve lower suicide rates.

BACKGROUND: Rectal neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are rare and associated with poorer prognoses compared to conventional adenocarcinomas. The efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy for resectable rectal NECs remains uncertain. Herein, we present a case of rectal NEC successfully treated with postoperative chemotherapy using irinotecan plus cisplatin. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman with a history of endometrial cancer presented with an intramural rectal tumour detected on follow-up imaging. Colonoscopy revealed a 30 mm submucosal tumour, and laparoscopic low anterior resection was performed. Histopathological examination showed poorly differentiated atypical cells with solid growth patterns. Metastasis from the uterine cancer was ruled out due to histological differences between the primary uterine tumour and the rectal lesion, as well as the absence of hormone receptor immunohistochemical expression. Further immunohistochemical analysis revealed diffuse CD56 positivity, a high mitotic rate (> 20/10 high power fields) and a Ki-67 labelling index exceeding 70%. Based on these findings, a diagnosis of rectal NEC, T3N0M0, Stage IIB (UICC 8th edition), was established. Given the aggressive nature of the tumour evidenced by a high Ki-67 labelling index, adjuvant chemotherapy comprising six cycles of irinotecan plus cisplatin was administered to mitigate the risk of recurrence. At the 3-year follow-up, the patient was free of disease recurrence. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the importance of multidisciplinary surgical interventions followed by adjuvant chemotherapy in managing rectal NECs.

Regeneration in many animals involves the formation of a blastema, which differentiates and organizes into the appropriate missing body parts. Although the mechanisms underlying blastema formation are often fundamental to regeneration biology, information on the cellular and molecular basis of blastema formation remains limited. Here, we focus on a fragmenting potworm (Enchytraeus japonensis), which can regenerate its whole body from small fragments. We find soxC and mmpReg as upregulated genes in the blastema. RNAi of soxC and mmpReg reduce the number of blastema cells, indicating that soxC and mmpReg promote blastema formation. Expression analyses show that soxC-expressing cells appear to gradually accumulate in blastema and constitute a large part of the blastema. Additionally, similar expression dynamics of SoxC orthologue genes in frog (Xenopus laevis) are found in the regeneration blastema of tadpole tail. Our findings provide insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying blastema formation across species.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the association between subjective anti-doping knowledge (subjective ADK) and objective anti-doping knowledge (objective ADK) among Japanese university athletes, framed within the context of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Methods: Eligible participants were 486 university athletes [320 men (65.8%), 166 women; mean age of 18.9 ± 1.0 years]. The participants categorized themselves in terms of the quality of their anti-doping knowledge. This assessment resulted in an independent variable coded as "(1) substantial lack of adequate knowledge," "(2) some lack of adequate knowledge," "(3) fair amount of knowledge" or "(4) good amount of knowledge." Objective ADK was assessed using the Athlete Learning Program about Health and Anti-Doping (ALPHA) test, a set of questions derived from the ALPHA-a former World Anti-Doping Agency e-learning program. The test comprises 12 questions (four choices each; passing index: â§10 points or 80% correct answer rate). ANCOVA was conducted using subjective ADK as an independent variable and ALPHA scores as a dependent variable, adjusting for confounding factors (anti-doping experience). Results: The ALPHA corrected answer rate across subjective ADK levels for the group were 73.10% for "(1) substantial lack of adequate knowledge," 71.97% for "(2) some lack of adequate knowledge," 75.18% for "(3) fair amount of knowledge" and 72.86% for "(4) good amount of knowledge." Comparison between different levels of subjective ADK revealed no significant differences in ALPHA score considering the main effects or any of their interactions. Discussion: The present results revealed that Japanese university athletes' subjective ADK did not match their objective ADK. In the context of the TPB, there may be limitations in the perceived behavioral control in anti-doping knowledge. Even if athletes view doping as a wrongful act and have formed attitudes and subjective norms to comply with the rules, the results suggest that errors may occur in the composition of behavioral intentions due to a lack of knowledge. This could lead to the possibility of facing the risk of unintentional anti-doping rule violations. It highlights the need for targeted educational interventions to align subjective ADK of athletes with their objective ADK.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a phylogenetically conserved neurotransmitter and modulator. Neurons utilizing serotonin have been identified in the central nervous systems of all vertebrates. In the central serotonergic system of vertebrate species examined so far, serotonergic neurons have been confirmed to exist in clusters in the brainstem. Although many serotonin-regulated cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functions have been elucidated in mammals, equivalents remain poorly understood in non-mammalian vertebrates. The purpose of this review is to summarize current knowledge of the anatomical organization and molecular features of the avian central serotonergic system. In addition, selected key functions of serotonin are briefly reviewed. Gene association studies between serotonergic system related genes and behaviors in birds have elucidated that the serotonergic system is involved in the regulation of behavior in birds similar to that observed in mammals. The widespread distribution of serotonergic modulation in the central nervous system and the evolutionary conservation of the serotonergic system provide a strong foundation for understanding and comparing the evolutionary continuity of neural circuits controlling corresponding brain functions within vertebrates. The main focus of this review is the chicken brain, with this type of poultry used as a model bird. The chicken is widely used not only as a model for answering questions in developmental biology and as a model for agriculturally useful breeding, but also in research relating to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional processes. In addition to a wealth of prior research on the projection relationships of avian brain regions, detailed subdivision similarities between avian and mammalian brains have recently been identified. Therefore, identifying the neural circuits modulated by the serotonergic system in avian brains may provide an interesting opportunity for detailed comparative studies of the function of serotonergic systems in mammals.

Introduction: This study examines the background of underweight young women in Japan from multiple perspectives, focusing on whether they have ever dieted. Methods: A screening survey was administered to 5,905 underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2) women aged 18-29 years, who could report their birth weight recorded in their mother-child handbook. Valid responses were obtained from 400 underweight and 189 normal-weight women. The survey collected data regarding height, weight (BMI), body image and perception of weight, dieting experience, exercise habits from elementary school age onwards, and current eating habits. Additionally, five standardized questionnaires were used (EAT-26, eHEALTH, SATAQ-3 JS, TIPI-J, and RSES). The primary analysis was a comparative analysis (t-test/χ2)-with the presence or absence of underweight and diet experience as independent variables, and each questionnaire as a dependent variable. Results: The screening survey revealed that approximately 24% of the total population was underweight, with a low mean BMI. Of the respondents, more than half reported their body image as skinny and a small percentage as obese. Compared with the non-diet-experienced group (NDG), the diet-experienced group (DG) had a significantly higher proportion of past to current exercise habits. There was a significantly higher percentage of disagreement responses from the DG for weight and food gain than for the NDG. The NDG weighed significantly less than the DG in terms of birth weight, and lost weight easier than the DG. Additionally, the NDG was significantly more likely to agree with increasing weight and food intake. The NDG's exercise habits were below 40% from elementary school age to the present, predominantly owing to a dislike for exercise and a lack of opportunity to implement it. In the standardized questionnaire, the DG was significantly higher for EAT-26, eHEALTH, SATAQ-3 JS, and Conscientiousness (TIPI-J), whereas the NDG was only significantly higher for Openness (TIPI-J). Discussion: The results suggest the need for different health education programs for underweight women who desire to lose weight and experience dieting and for those who do not. This study's results are reflected in the development of sports opportunities optimized for each individual, and in the development of measures to ensure adequate nutritional intake.

BACKGROUND: This study confirmed the kinetics of antibodies acquired by SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in solid-organ transplant recipients and examined their association with the development of COVID-19 and immunosuppressive status in organ transplant recipients. METHODS: We measured COVID-19 neutralizing antibody titer in 21 organ transplant recipients vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine and 14 nontransplant recipients (control group) 3 times before and at 1 and 6 months after the third dose of vaccine. By confirming the kinetics of the acquired antibodies, we examined the relevance of the background characteristics of organ transplant recipients, such as the development of infectious diseases and immunosuppressive status. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with neutralizing antibodies was significantly higher in the nontransplant group than in the transplant group. Neutralizing antibody titers were significantly lower in transplant recipients when they were compared before the third dose and 1 month later. In the transplant recipient group, 11 patients were positive, and 10 were negative for neutralizing antibodies. When the causal relationship between the neutralizing antibody titer and background was examined, a positive correlation was found between the antibody titer and the number of years since transplantation, and a negative correlation was found between the tacrolimus trough values, amount of mycophenolate mofetil or steroids taken internally, and antibody titer. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the effectiveness of vaccination in transplant recipients is associated with the post-transplant period before vaccination and the dose of immunosuppressive agents.

Thyroid hormones play a critical role in the initiation of the sensitive period of filial imprinting. The amount of thyroid hormones in the brains of chicks increases intrinsically during the late embryonic stages and peaks immediately before hatching. After hatching, a rapid imprinting-dependent inflow of circulating thyroid hormones into the brain occurs via vascular endothelial cells during imprinting training. In our previous study, inhibition of hormonal inflow impeded imprinting, indicating that the learning-dependent inflow of thyroid hormones after hatching is critical for the acquisition of imprinting. However, it remained unclear whether the intrinsic thyroid hormone level just before hatching affects imprinting. Here, we examined the effect of temporal thyroid hormone decrease on embryonic day 20 on approach behavior during imprinting training and preference for the imprinting object. To this end, methimazole (MMI; a thyroid hormone biosynthesis inhibitor) was administered to the embryos once a day on days 18-20. Serum thyroxine (T4) was measured to evaluate the effect of MMI. In the MMI-administered embryos, the T4 concentration was transiently reduced on embryonic day 20 but recovered to the control level on post-hatch day 0. At the beginning of imprinting training on post-hatch day 1, control chicks approached the imprinting object only when the object was moving. In the late phase of training, control chicks subsequently approached towards the static imprinting object. On the other hand, in the MMI-administered chicks, the approach behavior decreased during the repeated trials in the training, and the behavioral responses to the imprinting object were significantly lower than those of control chicks. This indicates that their persistent responses to the imprinting object were impeded by a temporal thyroid hormone decrease just before hatching. Consequently, the preference scores of MMI-administered chicks were significantly lower than those of control chicks. Furthermore, the preference score on the test was significantly correlated with the behavioral responses to the static imprinting object in the training. These results indicate that the intrinsic thyroid hormone level immediately before hatching is crucial for the learning process of imprinting.

Until now, the standard treatment regimen was cisplatin plus 5-FU as the chemotherapy for unresectable advanced esophageal cancer. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have brought about changes to the cancer treatment. Ipilimumab plus nivolumab was approved in June 2022 for unresectable advanced esophageal cancer. An 86-year-old woman who was normal ADL and cognitive function was diagnosed with unresectable esophageal cancer with multiple lymph node metastasis. We thought surgery or chemotherapy is impossible because of her age and health status, so we treated with ipilimumab plus nivolumab. After 2 cycles, tumor became reduced in size on endoscopic examination and accumulation in primary lesion and lymph node metastases was decreased considerably on positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET-CT). Though the cycle after initiation of chemotherapy was uneventful, tumor regrowth on the examinations at 5 months. The patient's condition of the disease was improved temporarily after change chemotherapy to paclitaxel as the second-line therapy, but she died due to disease progression at 11.4 months from initiation of treatment. Ipilimumab plus nivolumab can become one of the effective treatments for patients who are impossible to treat with conventional chemotherapy.

Thus far, no consensus has been reached regarding the treatment of peritoneal dissemination of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Here, we report a case of surgical resection and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for early multiple peritoneal recurrences of HCC. A 74-year-old man was found to have hepatic mass of 80 mm in size in S7 and 57 mm in S8, and was diagnosed with HCC. The patient underwent an open anterior segmentectomy and S7 subsegmentectomy of the liver. Peritoneal washing cytology revealed the presence of malignant cells. The tumor strongly adhered to the diaphragm, necessitating partial resection of the diaphragm. Six months after surgery, multiple disseminated recurrences were found on the CT scan. Atezolizumab plus bevacizumab combination therapy was initiated, but tumor size enlargement and elevation of tumor markers were observed after 3 courses. Resection of the dissemination(2 on the surface of the lung right lower lobe, 1 on the right renal superior retroperitoneum, 1 on the omentum, and 1 invading the jejunum)was performed. Considering the high risk of recurrence, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy with lenvatinib was administered for 1 year. No recurrence has been found for 16 months after the resection. Although more cases are needed to conclude, this case report suggests that surgical resection and postoperative administration of lenvatinib may be effective in the treatment of disseminated HCC lesions at a high risk of recurrence.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a phylogenetically conserved modulator of numerous aspects of neural functions. Serotonergic neurons in the dorsal and median raphe nucleus provide ascending innervation to the entire forebrain and midbrain. Another important neural modulatory system exists in the midbrain, the dopaminergic system, which is associated to reward processing and motivation control. Dopaminergic neurons are distributed and clustered in the brain, classically designated as groups A8-A16. Among them, groups A8-A10 associated with reward processing and motivation control are located in the midbrain and projected to the forebrain. Recently, midbrain dopaminergic neurons were shown to be innervated by serotonergic neurons and modulated by 5-HT, with the crosstalk between serotonergic and dopaminergic systems attracting increased attention. In birds, previous studies revealed that midbrain dopaminergic neurons are located in the A8-A10 homologous clusters. However, the detailed distribution of dopaminergic neurons and the crosstalk between serotonergic and dopaminergic systems in the bird are poorly understood. To improve the understanding of the regulation of the dopaminergic by the serotonergic system, we performed in situ hybridization in the chick brainstem. We prepared RNA probes for chick orthologues of dopaminergic neuron-related genes; tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopa decarboxylase (DDC), noradrenaline related genes; noradrenaline transporter (NAT) and dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH), and serotonin receptor genes; 5-HTR1A, 5-HTR1B, 5-HTR1D, 5-HTR1E, 5-HTR1F, 5-HTR2A, 5-HTR2B, 5-HTR2C, 5-HTR3A, 5-HTR4, 5-HTR5A, and 5-HTR7. We confirmed that the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and NAT was well matched in all chick dopaminergic nuclei examined. This supported that the compensation of the function of dopamine transporter (DAT) by NAT is a general property of avian dopaminergic neurons. Furthermore, we showed that 5-HTR1A and 5-HTR1B were expressed in midbrain dopaminergic nuclei, suggesting the serotonergic regulation of the dopaminergic system via these receptors in chicks. Our findings will help us understand the interactions between the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in birds at the molecular level.

This study developed an emotional vulnerability scale and examined its reliability and validity with a sample of university students. In health psychology, a measurement of emotional pain ("hurt feelings") can contribute to the prevention and improvement of physical and mental health problems in daily life. We collected data from 361 Japanese university students (186 men and 175 women; mean age = 19.6 ± 0.98 years). From preliminary interviews with 20 participants, 42 semantic units were extracted. For scale development, a questionnaire survey was conducted using the 42 extracted categories, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed. Four factors (16 items) emerged, which were both reliable and valid: (1) "vulnerability toward criticism or denial," (2) "vulnerability toward worsening relationships," (3) "vulnerability toward interpersonal discord," and (4) "vulnerability toward procrastination and emotional avoidance." This scale can be useful to understand vulnerability in everyday situations and grasp the vulnerable conditions experienced by individuals. This can help prevent stress responses (such as depression and sadness) and mental health problems, which are valuable contributions to health psychology.

Lignite is an obsolete and less commercially circulated natural resource due to its low calorific value worldwide. The effective conversion of lignite into methane is important considering the global energy crunch. This study reported the effective bioconversion of organic matter released from chemically solubilized lignite to methane using two methanogenic consortia types: mixed methanogenic enrichment culture (mMEC) and SAL25-2. We demonstrated in a microcosm study that the start of methane generation was observed within seven days. Furthermore, the methane yield increased as the total organic carbon concentration of the chemically solubilized lignite solution increased. Surprisingly, methane production using mMEC was drastically enhanced by approximately 50-fold when pulverized lignite was added as conductive material (CM) to the microcosms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest number of times methane production increased relative to the control. Our results demonstrated that bioaugmentation using a methanogenic consortium and adding pulverized lignite as CM could facilitate the bioconversion of chemically solubilized lignite solution to methane and lead to effective utilization of subterranean lignite, regarded as a neglected natural resource, without any further excavation processes.

Previous studies have indicated that athletes' anti-doping knowledge is inadequate. Athletes' willingness to learn about anti-doping (willingness to learn) may influence their anti-doping knowledge, but the actual situation is unclear. This study aimed to determine the relationship between athletes' willingness to learn about anti-doping and their objective measurement knowledge and explore directions for educational interventions. The eligible participants were 971 male and 802 female university athletes. We used the ALPHA test (12 questions/four choices; passing index: ≥10 points/80% correct answer rate) to assess objective anti-doping knowledge. The willingness to learn question was, "Would you like to learn more about anti-doping?" Responses were given on a 4-point scale ranging from 1: strongly disagree to 4: strongly agree. An ANCOVA was conducted with four levels of willingness to learn as the independent variable and ALPHA correct answer rate as the dependent variable, adjusting for confounding factors (years of athletic experience and anti-doping education experience). The percentage of athletes (%) and each ALPHA correct answer rate (%) by the level of willingness to learn was 1: strongly disagree, n = 1.64%, 61.78%; 2: somewhat disagree, n = 13.14%, 62.38%; 3: somewhat agree, n = 62.94%, 64.08%; 4: strongly agree, n = 22.28%, 67.11%. The ALPHA correct answer rates showed significant differences in the main effect by the level of willingness to learn [F (3, 1767) = 2.873, p < 0.05, η2 = 0.01], although the effect size was small, and multiple comparisons showed no significant differences between the levels. The results indicated that the ALPHA correct answer rate did not reach 80% even for the "strongly agree" level of willingness to learn, suggesting that information on anti-doping may be inadequate. The need to provide sufficient educational content to improve knowledge was evident.

As depressive symptoms can impair athletes' healthy competitive life and lead to a decline in performance, it is necessary to identify and prevent these symptoms. Organization-based self-esteem is one of the factors that influence the mental health of the members of an organization. It has been found that employees with high organization-based self-esteem have good mental health. However, the relationship between organization-based self-esteem and mental health has not yet been investigated in athletes. Therefore, we aimed to develop an organization-based self-esteem scale for university athletes (Study I) and investigate the relationship between organization-based self-esteem and depressive symptoms (Study II). Study I included subsample A: 210 university athletes (average age 19.6 ± 0.64 years) and subsample B: 371 university athletes (average age 19.4 ± 0.90), who responded to the newly developed Organization-Based Self-Esteem Scale for University Athletes (OBSE-UA), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Sports Commitment Scale. To confirm the reliability of the developed scale, 2 weeks later they responded to the OBSE-UA again. In Study II, the participants were 232 university athletes (average age 19.5 ± 1.10 years), who completed the OBSE-UA developed in Study I and the Self-Rating Depression Scale. In Study I, we extracted a one-factor structure with six items for the OBSE-UA using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Sufficient validity and reliability were confirmed by examining the relationship between organization-based self-esteem and sports commitment scale and retest methods, respectively. In Study II, athletes with high organization-based self-esteem showed a 0.33 time lower risk of experiencing depressive symptoms, compared to athletes with low organization-based self-esteem.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) specifically regulates energy expenditure via heat production. Nobiletin (NOB), a natural polymethoxylated flavone present in citrus fruits, can activate thermogenesis in the BAT of high-fat diet-induced obese mice. The activity of BAT is directly regulated by ß-adrenergic stimulation. In this study, we report the effects of NOB on BAT activation using ß-adrenergic agonists. We observed that when HB2 brown adipocyte cell lines are stimulated with ß-adrenergic agonists, NOB enhances the expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), which is associated with the mitochondrial energy metabolism in these cells. Moreover, NOB increases the mRNA expression of the brown adipokines neuregulin-4 (Nrg4) and fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21) and the secretion of FGF-21. These results suggest that NOB can enhance the thermogenic functions of brown adipocytes and promote brown adipokine secretion due to enhanced ß-adrenergic stimulation. In addition, 3'-demethyl nobiletin (3'-DMN), an NOB CYP-enzyme metabolite, can increase UCP1 mRNA expression. Both NOB and 3'-DMN significantly promoted mitochondrial membrane potential in HB2 adipocytes following ß-adrenergic stimulation. Therefore, we believe that NOB could be a promising candidate for activating BAT under ß-adrenergic stimulation and preventing the onset of obesity.

In filial imprinting, newly hatched chicks repeatedly approach a conspicuous object nearby and memorize it, even though it is an artificial object instead of their mother hen. Imprinting on an artificial object in a laboratory setting has a clear sensitive period from post hatch days 1-3 in the case of domestic chicks. However, the establishment of imprintability are difficult to investigate because of the limitations of the behavioral apparatus. In this study, we developed a novel behavioral apparatus, based on a running disc, to investigate the learning processes of imprinting in newly hatched domestic chicks. In the apparatus, the chick repeatedly approaches the imprinting object on the disc. The apparatus sends a transistor-transistor-logic signal every 1/10 turn of the disc to a personal computer through a data acquisition system following the chick's approach to the imprinting object on the monitor. The imprinting training and tests were designed to define the three learning processes in imprinting. The first process is the one in which chicks spontaneously approach the moving object. The second is an acquired process in which chicks approach an object even when it is static. In the third process, chicks discriminate between the differently colored imprinting object and the control object in the preference test. Using the apparatus, the difference in the chicks' behavior during or after the sensitive period was examined. During the sensitive period, the chicks at post hatch hour 12 and 18 developed the first imprinting training process. The chicks at post hatch hour 24 maintained learning until the second process. The chicks at post hatch hour 30 reached the discrimination process in the test. After the sensitive period, the chicks reared in darkness until post hatch day 4 exhibited poor first learning process in the training. Thus, this apparatus will be useful for the detection of behavioral changes during neuronal development and learning processes.

Hippocampal formation (HF) plays a key role in cognitive and emotional processing in mammals. In HF neural circuits, serotonin receptors (5-HTRs) modulate functions related to cognition and emotion. To understand the phylogenetic continuity of the neural basis for cognition and emotion, it is important to identify the neural circuits that regulate cognitive and emotional processing in animals. In birds, HF has been shown to be related to cognitive functions and emotion-related behaviors. However, details regarding the distribution of 5-HTRs in the avian brain are very sparse, and 5-HTRs, which are potentially involved in cognitive functions and emotion-related behaviors, are poorly understood. Previously, we showed that 5-HTR1B and 5-HTR3A were expressed in chick HF. To identify additional 5-HTRs that are potentially involved in cognitive and emotional functions in avian HF, we selected the chick orthologs of 5-HTR1D, 5-HTR1E, 5-HTR1F, 5-HTR2B, 5-HTR5A, and 5-HTR7 and performed in situ hybridization in the chick telencephalon. We found that 5-HTR1D, 5-HTR1E, 5-HTR5A, and 5-HTR7 were expressed in the chick HF, especially 5-HTR1D and 5-HTR1E, which showed subdivision- and layer-selective expression patterns, suggesting that the characteristic 5-HT regulation is involved in cognitive functions and emotion-related behaviors in these HF regions. These findings can facilitate the understanding of serotonin regulation in avian HF and the correspondence between the HF subdivisions of birds and mammals.

This case was a 73-year-old woman who previously underwent a partial colectomy for ascending colon cancer at the age of 70. She had a history of cancer of the uterus, descending colon, bladder, and left ureter. She had a family history of colorectal cancer and met the Amsterdam â ¡ criteria for Lynch syndrome. She was diagnosed as Lynch syndrome with a MSH2 germline mutation by genetic analysis. One year later, a partial colectomy was performed for sigmoid colon cancer. Six months later, colonofiberscopy revealed early-stage cancer in the rectum, and EMR was performed. Despite adequate surveillance, she had frequent recurrences of advanced colorectal cancer within a short period of time. We report here risk factors of colorectal cancer in Lynch syndrome and indications for prophylactic total colectomy.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) play an important role in many brain functions. Our previous study revealed that the injection of mAChRs antagonist scopolamine into the intermediate medial mesopallium (IMM) region, which is critical for filial imprinting, impairs memory formation. In avian brains, four mAChR subtypes have been identified (M2, M3, M4 and M5). M3 and M5 receptors increase the excitability of neurons, whereas M2 and M4 receptors reduce the excitability. Because the scopolamine blocks all subtypes, the previous study did not identify which subtype contributes to the memory formation. By injecting several types of mAChR antagonists into the IMM, in this study we determined which mAChR subtype plays a critical role in imprinting. First, the effects of antagonists on the excitatory receptor subtypes M3 and M5 were examined. Injection of the M3 antagonist (DAU5884) at 20 mM or the M5 antagonist (ML381) at 2 mM impaired imprinting. Considering the pKi value of DAU5884, the impairment seems to be caused by DAU5884 binding to M3 and/or M4 receptors. Second, the effect of antagonists on the inhibitory receptor subtype M2 was examined. The results showed that the M2 antagonist (AQ-RA741) impaired imprinting at a concentration of 20 mM. Considering the pKi value of AQ-RA741, the impairment seems to be caused by AQ-RA741 binding to M2 and/or M4. The findings of this study suggests that the excitatory receptor subtypes M3 and M5 and the inhibitory receptor subtype M2 and/or M4 cooperate to achieve the appropriate balance of acetylcholine signaling to execute imprinting.
