INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown the antitumor efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and brain metastases (BM). However, it is unclear whether the efficacy of ICI is similar between patients with and without BM. It is yet unclear whether the efficacy of ICI in patients with BM increases with higher levels of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, as observed in patients without BM. METHODS: We compared the outcomes of ICI treatment between patients with and without BM using a cohort containing 1741 prospectively enrolled patients with lung cancer. We investigated whether there were differences in the outcomes of ICI based on PD-L1 expression levels between these patients. RESULTS: We enrolled 240 patients with NSCLC with or without BM who were treated with ICI or both chemotherapy and ICI. There were no significant differences in overall survival (OS) between all patients with or without BM (p = 0.489). However, OS was significantly shorter in patients with BM than in those without in the PD-L1 ≥ 50% group (16.5 M vs. 30.6 M, p = 0.003) but not in the PD-L1 ≥ 1% or negative group. BM was an independent poor prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio: [95% confidence interval], 2.045; [1.058-3.953], p = 0.033) in the PD-L1 ≥ 50% group. CONCLUSION: Our study indicated that the outcomes of patients with or without BM treated with ICI were not significantly different. The efficacy of ICI in patients with PD-L1 expression ≥50% would be lower in patients with BM than in those without.

The patient, a 36-year-old female, had no previous history of shingles. She was admitted to the hospital due to nausea and lightheadedness. Upon admission, she was diagnosed with bilateral medial medullary infarcts. She received treatment with intravenous edaravone and argatroban, as well as antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel. However, her dysphagia, dysarthria, and paraplegia worsened. Due to changes in the lesion of the basilar artery on brain |MRA, we suspected the possibility of basilar artery dissection, and discontinued antiplatelet therapy. Subsequent imaging studies suggested vasculitis. After examining the cerebrospinal fluid, we diagnosed varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vasculopathy. Based on this diagnosis, we administered steroid pulse therapy for three days, started intravenous acyclovir, and resumed antithrombotic therapy with clopidogrel. Prednisone was administered for five days. Biochemical tests revealed an elevated D-dimer level. Due to the presence of lower extremity venous thrombus, clopidogrel was replaced with apixaban. The acyclovir infusion was discontinued due to observed acyclovir-induced neutropenia. These treatments improved neurological symptoms, circumflex thickening of the basilar artery, and contrast effects in the same area. On the 70th day, the patient was transferred to the hospital for rehabilitation. It is important to consider VZV angiopathy as a potential cause of juvenile cerebral infarction accompanying progressive basilar artery stenosis, regardless of the presence or absence of a skin rash.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer is a well-known risk factor for venous thromboembolism. The D-dimer level is used to predict venous thromboembolism; however, reports on an appropriate D-dimer cut-off value in Japanese patients with advanced lung cancer are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to calculate the D-dimer cut-off value for venous thromboembolism at the time of lung cancer diagnosis. METHODS: The Rising-venous thromboembolism/NEJ037 study was a multicenter, prospective observational study. Patients with lung cancer who were contraindicated for radical resection or radiation were enrolled and followed up for 2 years. In the present study (jRCT no. 061180025), a receiver operating characteristic curve for D-dimer levels was created using the dataset of the Rising-venous thromboembolism/NEJ037 study. RESULTS: The Rising-venous thromboembolism/NEJ037 study included a total of 1008 patients, of whom 976, whose D-dimer levels had been measured at the time of cancer diagnosis, were included in the present study. At the time of lung cancer diagnosis, 62 (6.3%) and 914 (93.7%) patients presented with and without venous thromboembolism, respectively. The D-dimer values ranged from 0.1 to 180.1 µg/ml and from 0.1 to 257.2 µg/ml in patients with and without venous thromboembolism, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic curve was discriminative with a cut-off value of 3.3 µg/ml and an area under the curve of 0.794 (sensitivity, 0.742; specificity, 0.782; 95% confidence interval, 0.725-0.863). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to calculate the D-dimer cut-off value in Japanese patients with advanced lung cancer. Patients with D-dimer levels ≥3.3 µg/ml at the time of initial diagnosis may have coexisting venous thromboembolism.

A 5-year-old intact male mixed-breed cat weighing 4.5 kg was referred to our hospital with a left testicular mass. CT revealed mild heterogeneous contrast enhancement and calcification in the testicular mass. A well-defined, contrast-enhancing, multiloculated mass with fluid-filled areas was extended from the testicular mass in the scrotum to the caudal aspect of the left kidney. The abdominal mass extended to the right crus of the diaphragm, and the gastrointestinal tract was compressed dorsally. Histopathology was consistent with teratoma. Characteristic CT findings in a feline testicular teratoma may include calcification and cystic areas.

[Objective] To investigate association between Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) and brain MRI. [Subjects] 26 patients (7 females, mean age 63.9 ± 12.7 years) with WE admitted to our department between May 2008 and September 2022. [Methods] Wernicke's encephalopathy in patients with MRI lesions was defined as "MRI-positive group" (MPG), and those without MRI lesions as "MRI-negative group" (MNG). The following parameters were assessed between the two groups: age, sex, alcoholism, neurological symptoms, vitamin B1, lymphocyte, total cholesterol, albumin, and outcome at discharge. [Results] There were 17 patients in MPG. Compared to MNG, MPG had lower rates of alcohol abuse (10.0% vs 77.8%, P = 0.025), lower vitamin B1 (median 10.0 |ng/ml vs 29.0 |ng/ml, P < 0.001), and more vitamin B1 treatment dose (median 1900 |mg vs 600 |mg, P = 0.016). [Conclusion] Alcoholic WE may be overlooked if the focus is solely on brain MRI findings.

INTRODUCTION: Few reports have described acyclovir (ACV) encephalopathy without acute kidney injury (AKI). OBJECTIVE: This study clarified the clinical features of ACV encephalopathy without AKI compared to that with AKI. METHODS: Creatinine (Cre) levels were measured on admission. After admission, Cre was measured in a timely manner for the first seven hospital days. The minimum Cre level in these measurements was then determined. ACV encephalopathy was defined when two criteria were met: 1) neurological symptoms appeared after valacyclovir (VACV) administration, and 2) neurological symptoms improved after VACV discontinuation. AKI was defined when the Cre level on admission was >1.5 times higher than the minimum Cre level. The subjects were divided into AKI and non-AKI groups based on these findings. RESULTS: Eighteen patients had ACV encephalopathy (5 males, mean age 81.3±5.5 years old). All patients were prescribed VACV 3,000 mg/day. The minimum Cre was 1.93±1.76 mg/dL. AKI occurred in 10 (56.6%) patients. VACV was discontinued in all patients, and emergency hemodialysis treatment was administered in 10 (55.6%) patients. All patients recovered. Compared to the AKI group, the non-AKI group had a lower history of taking a Ca-blocker (33.3% vs 80.0%, p=0.092), a lower rate of emergency dialysis (16.9% vs 70.0%, p=0.059) and a longer time to clinical improvement (3.67±1.86 vs 2.20±0.63 days, p=0.073). CONCLUSION: ACV encephalopathy without AKI is characterized by a low rate of emergency dialysis, which may be linked to a prolonged duration of symptoms.

Heart rate variability analyses using Poincaré plots can be useful for evaluating the autonomic nervous system function. However, the interpretation of the quantitative indicators of Poincaré plots remains controversial. Thus, few studies have verified the effectiveness of the quantitative indicators in veterinary medicine. This study aimed to verify the reliability of Poincaré plot indicators using pharmacological models in dogs. Four healthy beagles were used in this study. Each dog was treated with propranolol, atropine, and propranolol-atropine to block the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sympathetic-parasympathetic functions, respectively. The quantitative indicators of the Poincaré plots were calculated based on data from 300 electrocardiogram beats collected before and after the administration of each drug and statistically analysed. The quantitative indicators of the Poincaré plots, such as the standard deviation perpendicular to the major axis (SD1), standard deviation along the major axis (SD2), and SD1 × SD2, significantly decreased after the drug administration in both the parasympathetic and sympathetic-parasympathetic blockade models. However, no significant differences were observed in SD1/SD2 between the groups. The Poincaré plots reflected the changes in the autonomic nervous system of dogs. In dogs, SD1, SD2, and SD1 × SD2 can detect a state in which parasympathetic nerve activity is suppressed.

A 71-year-old man with hypertension and diabetes mellitus presented to our hospital because he felt lightheaded. Diffusion-weighted images (DWI) on brain MRI showed high signal lesions in the left cerebellar hemisphere and the right pons. The diagnosis of cerebellar infarction was made, but he refused treatment. One month later, he came to our hospital because his body leaned to the left. Neurological examination revealed dysarthria and cerebellar truncal ataxia. An electrocardiogram showed atrial fibrillation. DWI on brain MRI showed high signal lesions in the bilateral cerebellar hemispheres and middle cerebellar peduncles (MCP). Dabigatran 300 |mg/day was administered for cardiogenic cerebral embolism. On the 12th day of onset, he was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital. At 72 years old, T2*-weighted images on brain MRI showed hot cross bun sign (HCBs) in the pons. We considered that HCBs were caused by antegrade or retrograde degeneration (or both) of pontine infarcts and bilateral MCP infarcts in the pontine cerebellar tract. It seemed preferable to use T2*-weighted images or proton density-weighted images rather than T2-weighted images to detect HCBs. When HCBs is detected, it should be noted that HCBs can be caused by bilateral MCP infarcts in addition to multiple system atrophy.

Here we report a case series of two dogs diagnosed as renal interstitial cell tumor (RICT) accompanied by elevated serum erythropoietin level and marked polycythemia. RICT is a rare tumor in dogs, originating from renal interstitial cells. While several renal tumors such as renal lymphoma, adenocarcinoma, carcinoma, sarcoma, fibrosarcoma and nephroblastoma may cause polycythemia, polycythemia caused by RICT has never been reported in dogs. The tumors in both dogs were solitary and lied within cortex or cortico-medullary junction. Histopathology revealed spindle-shaped cells suggesting mesenchymal origin, with no mitotic figures suggesting that the tumors in both dogs were benign. Following surgical removal of the affected kidney, serum erythropoietin level and polycythemia normalized in both dogs.

PURPOSE: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are ineffective against epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients who were treated or not treated with ICIs, and of those who benefit from immunotherapy in EGFR-mutant NSCLC. METHODS: We analyzed patients with unresectable stage III/IV or recurrent NSCLC harboring EGFR mutations using a prospective umbrella-type lung cancer registry (CS-Lung-003). RESULTS: A total of 303 patients who met the eligibility criteria were analyzed. The median age was 69 years; 116 patients were male, 289 had adenocarcinoma, 273 had major mutations, and 67 were treated with ICIs. The duration of EGFR-TKI treatment was longer in the Non-ICI group than in the ICI group (17.1 vs. 12.7 months, p < 0.001). Patients who received ICIs for more than 6 months were categorized into the durable clinical benefit (DCB) group (24 patients), and those who received ICIs for less than 6 months into the Non-DCB group (43 patients). The overall survival in the DCB group exhibited longer than the Non-DCB group (69.3 vs. 47.1 months), and an equivalent compared to that in the Non-ICI group (69.3 vs. 68.9 months). Multivariate analysis for time to next treatment (TTNT) of ICIs showed that a poor PS was associated with a shorter TTNT [hazard ratio (HR) 3.309; p < 0.001]. Patients who were treated with ICIs and chemotherapy combination were associated with a longer TTNT (HR 0.389; p = 0.003). In addition, minor EGFR mutation was associated with a long TTNT (HR 0.450; p = 0.046). CONCLUSION: ICIs were administered to only 22% of patients with EGFR-mutated lung cancer, and they had shorter TTNT of EGFR-TKI compared to other patients. ICI treatment should be avoided in EGFR mutated lung cancer with poor PS but can be considered for lung cancer with EGFR minor mutations. Pathological biomarker to predict long-term responders to ICI are needed.

Despite the occurrence of various hemorrhagic events during advanced lung cancer treatment, few researchers have reported on their risk factors. Moreover, the development of cancer-related thromboembolism indicates anticoagulant use. However, adverse events such as bleeding should be monitored. In this study, we aimed to identify factors that influence the onset of hemorrhagic events in patients with lung cancer. The Rising-VTE/NEJ037 study was a multicenter, prospective, observational study. A total of 1008 patients with lung cancer who were unsuitable for radical resection or radiation were enrolled and followed up for 2 years. Multivariate analysis using a Cox proportional hazard model was performed to compare the outcomes of the time to the onset of hemorrhagic events for 2 years after registration. Hemorrhagic events occurred in 115 patients (11.4%), with 35 (30.4%) experiencing major bleeding. Significant risk factors included venous thromboembolism (VTE) (hazard ratio [HR]: 4.003, p < 0.001) and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status score of 1 (HR: 2.476, p < 0.001). Factors that significantly reduced hemorrhagic event risk were female sex (HR: 0.454, p = 0.002) and M1a status (HR: 0.542, p = 0.038). VTE is a risk factor for hemorrhagic events in patients with advanced lung cancer, and risks associated with anticoagulant therapy should be considered.

Systemic anesthesia in penguins is often achieved using inhalation anesthetic agents alone, and information on injectable drugs for systemic anesthesia is limited. General anesthesia with a minimal effect on circulatory dynamics is necessary to perform noninvasive examinations and treatments in animals, including penguins. In this study, alfaxalone (ALFX), an injectable anesthetic agent, was examined to establish the optimal anesthetic method for gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua). Alfaxalone was administered intravenously through the metatarsal vein, and anesthesia was maintained by a constant rate infusion (CRI). A biological monitor was used to record numerous clinical indices, and the anesthetic depth was evaluated every 5 minutes during anesthesia; the CRI was adjusted until the optimal anesthetic depth was obtained. Anesthesia depth was assessed, and the CRI rate was adjusted. The CRI was stopped, and the time until recovery was recorded. Blood samples were collected to analyze plasma concentrations of ALFX. The mean total dose of ALFX required for anesthetic induction was 9 ± 1.9 mg/kg, the intubation time was 126 ± 21 seconds, and the maintenance infusion rate of ALFX was 0.3 ± 0.08 mg/kg/min. The time from discontinuation of anesthesia to extubation was 42 ± 23 minutes, and the time to recovery was 90 ± 33 minutes. Significant changes in the heart rate and blood pressure were not observed during the anesthetic events. The plasma concentration of ALFX under stable anesthesia was 6734 ± 4386 ng/mL (range, 3315-14 326 ng/mL). Although anesthesia using ALFX tended to result in a prolonged time to recovery in gentoo penguins, rapid induction of anesthesia and stable hemodynamics during anesthetic maintenance were achieved. Therefore, ALFX may be considered a suitable anesthetic method for noninvasive examinations and treatments in penguins.

The present study investigated the role of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) in the proliferation and survival of Babesia gibsoni in vitro. To detect the effect on the entry of B. gibsoni into host erythrocytes, the parasite was incubated with an antibody against B. gibsoni HSP90 (BgHSP90) for 24 h. The results of this experiment demonstrated that both the incorporation of [3H]hypoxanthine into the nucleic acids of B. gibsoni and the number of parasites were not altered, indicating that an anti-BgHSP90 antibody did not directly inhibit the entry of the parasite into erythrocytes. Moreover, two HSP90 inhibitors, geldanamycin (GA) and tanespimycin (17-AAG), were used to evaluate the function of BgHSP90. GA and 17-AAG decreased both the incorporation of [3H]hypoxanthine and the number of infected erythrocytes, suggesting that BgHSP90 plays important roles in DNA synthesis and the proliferation of B. gibsoni. The effect of 17-AAG on the parasites was weaker than that of GA. Additionally, the effect of GA on the survival and superoxide generation of canine neutrophils was assessed. The survival of canine neutrophils was not affected. The superoxide generation was strongly suppressed by GA. This result indicated that GA inhibited the function of canine neutrophils. Additional studies are necessary to elucidate the role of BgHSP90 in the proliferation of the parasite.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) consumes excess lipids and produces lipid metabolites as ketone bodies. These ketone bodies are then recycled for lipogenesis by the enzyme acetoacetyl-CoA synthetase (AACS). Previously, we found that a high-fat diet (HFD) upregulated AACS expression in white adipose tissue. In this study, we investigated the effects of diet-induced obesity on AACS in BAT. When 4-week-old ddY mice were fed a HFD or high-sucrose diet (HSD) for 12 weeks, a significant decrease in Aacs, acetyl-CoA carboxylase-1 (Acc-1), and fatty acid synthase (Fas) expression was observed in the BAT of the HFD group, whereas expression was not affected in the HSD group. In vitro analysis showed decreased Aacs and Fas expression in rat primary-cultured brown adipocytes following isoproterenol treatment for 24 h. In addition, the suppression of Aacs by siRNA markedly decreased the expression of Fas and Acc-1 but did not affect the expression of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) or other factors. These results suggested that HFD may suppress ketone body utilization for lipogenesis in BAT and that AACS gene expression may be important for regulating lipogenesis in BAT. Myelosuppression, a side effect of anticancer drugs, makes people more susceptible to infectious diseases by compromising the immune system. When a cancer patient develops a contagious disease, treatment with an anticancer drug is suspended or postponed to treat the infectious disease. If there was a drug that suppresses the growth of cancer cells among antibacterial agents, it would be possible to treat both infectious diseases and cancer. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of antibacterial agents on cancer cell development. Vancomycin (VAN) had little effect on cell proliferation against the breast cancer cell, MCF-7, prostate cancer cell, PC-3, and gallbladder cancer cell, NOZ C-1. Alternatively, Teicoplanin (TEIC) and Daptomycin (DAP) promoted the growth of some cancer cells. In contrast, Linezolid (LZD) suppressed the proliferation of MCF-7, PC-3, and NOZ C-1 cells. Therefore, we found a drug that affects the growth of cancer cells among antibacterial agents. Next, when we examined the effects of the combined use of existing anticancer and antibacterial agents, we found VAN did not affect the growth suppression by anticancer agents. However, TEIC and DAP attenuated the growth suppression of anticancer agents. In contrast, LZD additively enhanced the growth suppression by Docetaxel in PC-3 cells. Furthermore, we showed that LZD inhibits cancer cell growth by mechanisms that involve phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) pathway suppression. Therefore, LZD might simultaneously treat cancer and infectious diseases.

Renal impairment is concurrent with adverse outcomes such as heart disease in humans and dogs. Intrarenal Doppler ultrasonography (IRD) is used to assess intrarenal hemodynamics, and resistance index (RI) and venous impedance index (VII) are used to evaluate intrarenal hemodynamics in humans with heart failure. However, only a few studies have assessed the efficacy of IRD, especially VII, in dogs, and the methods differ between studies. Additionally, repeatability, reproducibility, and factors influencing IRD values have not been validated in dogs. This prospective, analytical study aimed to assess repeatability and reproducibility of IRD, and to clarify influencing factors of IRD in dogs without heart disease. We enrolled 78 dogs without heart disease. The RI and VII were highly reproducible, and the reference intervals for VII were 0.13-0.37. Differences in transducer (sector and convex) and posture (right lateral and supine decubitus position) had no effect on the IRD values. In contrast, RI and VII were higher in the renal vessels than in interlobar vessels. Age affected RI values (r = 0.39, P < 0.001), but there was no correlation between age, body weight, and VII. In conclusion, IRD is a repeatable and reproducible method to assess intrarenal hemodynamics in dogs. The findings also suggest that age should be considered while interpreting RI.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the diagnostic predictive factors of listeria meningitis. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Twenty-eight patients with bacterial meningitis (age; 65.9 ± 14.8 years, 11 female) who were admitted to Chikamori Hospital from October 1, 2006 to December 31, 2021 were included. Bacterial meningitis was defined as cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) pleocytosis with evidence of bacterial infection in CSF or blood. The blood and CSF data were reviewed for analysis. RESULTS: 9 patients were diagnosed as listeria meningitis, 19 patients were in non-listeria meningitis. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that higher CSF lymphocyte ratio was significantly associated with listeria meningitis (Odds ratio 1.123, 95% Confidence interval 1.006-1.2155, P = 0.039). CSF lymphocyte ratio of 30% or more was found to predict listeria meningitis with a sensitivity of 55.6% and a specificity of 100%. CONCLUSION: CSF lymphocyte ratio may be useful for differentiating between listeria meningitis and non-listeria meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Management of cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) is essential in cancer treatment selection and prognosis. However, currently, no method exists for assessing VTE risk associated with advanced lung cancer. Therefore, we assessed VTE risk, including driver gene mutation, in advanced lung cancer and performed a Khorana score validation. METHODS: The Rising-VTE/NEJ037 study was a multicenter prospective observational study that included patients with advanced lung cancer. In the Rising-VTE/NEJ037 study, the Khorana score was calculated for enrolled patients with available data on all Khorana score components. The modified Khorana score was based on the body mass index of ≥ 25 kg/m2, according to the Japanese obesity standard. A multivariate logistic regression analysis, including patient background characteristics, was performed to evaluate the presence of VTE 2 years after the lung cancer diagnosis. RESULTS: This study included 1008 patients with lung cancer, of whom 100 (9.9%) developed VTE. From the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, VTE risk could not be determined because both the Khorana score (0.518) and modified Khorana score (0.516) showed very low areas under the curve. The risk factors for VTE in the multivariate analysis included female sex, adenocarcinoma, performance status, N factor, lymphocyte count, platelet count, prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 and diastolic blood pressure. CONCLUSION: The Khorana score, which is widely used in cancer-VTE risk assessment, was less useful for Japanese patients with advanced lung cancer. Prothrombin fragment 1 + 2, a serum marker involved in coagulation, was more suitable for risk identification. CLINICAL TRIAL INFORMATION: jRCTs061180025.

Introduction/Background: Chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by durvalumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor, is the standard treatment for locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a life-threatening toxicity caused by these treatments; however, risk factors for the ILD have not yet been established. Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs) are computed tomography (CT) findings which manifest as minor interstitial shadows. We aimed to investigate whether ILAs could be risk factors for grade-two or higher ILD during durvalumab therapy. Patients and Methods: Patients with NSCLC who received durvalumab after CRT from July 2018 to June 2021 were retrospectively enrolled. We obtained patient characteristics, laboratory data, radiotherapeutic parameters, and chest CT findings before durvalumab therapy. Results: A total of 148 patients were enrolled. The prevalence of ILAs before durvalumab treatment was 37.8%. Among 148 patients, 63.5% developed ILD during durvalumab therapy. The proportion of patients with grade-two or higher ILD was 33.8%. The univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that older age, high dose-volume histogram parameters, and the presence of ILAs were significant risk factors for grade-two or higher ILD. The multivariate analysis showed that ILAs were independent risk factors for grade-two or higher ILD (odds ratio, 3.70; 95% confidence interval, 1.69−7.72; p < 0.001). Conclusions: We showed that pre-existing ILAs are risk factors for ILD during durvalumab treatment after CRT. We should pay attention to the development of grade-two or higher ILD during durvalumab treatment in patients with ILAs.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the epidemic status of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in cats in Japan due to insufficiently reliable seroepidemiological analysis methods that are easy to use in cats. RESULTS: We developed a protein-A/G-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in cats. The assay was standardized using positive rabbit antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. The ELISA results were consistent with those of a conventional anti-feline-immunoglobulin-G (IgG)-based ELISA. To test the protein-A/G-based ELISA, we collected blood samples from 1,969 cats that had been taken to veterinary clinics in Japan from June to July 2020 and determined the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Nine cats were found to have SARS-CoV-2 S1-specific IgG, of which 4 had recombinant receptor-binding domain-specific IgG. Of those 9 samples, one showed neutralizing activity. Based on these findings, we estimated that the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies in cats in Japan was 0.05% (1/1,969 samples). This prevalence was consistent with the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in humans in Japan according to research conducted at that time. CONCLUSIONS: Protein-A/G-based ELISA has the potential to be a standardized method for measuring anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in cats. The infection status of SARS-CoV-2 in cats in Japan might be linked to that in humans.
