RESUMO

Kale is a nutrient-dense leafy vegetable associated with wide-ranging health benefits. It is tolerant of drought and temperature fluctuations, and could thus serve an increasingly important role in providing a safe and nutritious food supply during the climate crisis, while kale's ease of cultivation and ability to be grown in a wide range of soils make it a good fit for urban agriculture. In this pilot study we explored potential differences between kale grown at urban versus rural farms. We planted kale seedlings (Darkibor variety) at three urban and four rural farms in and around Baltimore City, Maryland, instructed farmers to cultivate them using their usual growing practices, harvested the kale from fields and points of distribution, and analyzed it for concentrations of carotenoids, vitamins C and K1, ten nutritional elements, and eight non-essential metals. Although sample sizes for some analyses were in some cases too small to produce statistically significant results, we identified potentially meaningful differences in concentrations of several components between urban and rural kale samples. Compared to urban samples, mean concentrations of carotenoids and vitamins were 22-38% higher in rural field samples. By contrast, mean concentrations for eight nutritional elements were higher in urban field samples by as much as 413% for iron. Compared to rural field samples, mean concentrations of nine non-essential metals were higher in urban samples, although lead and cadmium concentrations for all samples were below public health guidelines. Some urban-rural differences were more pronounced than those identified in prior research. For six elements, variance within urban and rural farms was greater than variance between urban and rural farms, suggesting urbanicity may not be the primary driver of some observed differences. For some nutrients, mean concentrations were higher than upper ranges reported in prior estimates, suggesting kale may have the potential to be more nutrient-dense than previously estimated. The nutritive and metals composition of this important crop, and the factors that influence it, merit continued investigation given its growing popularity.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the influence of pulmonary infection after radical esophagectomy on serum inflammatory markers, pulmonary function, and prognosis. METHODS: We enrolled 278 esophageal cancer patients who underwent radical esophagectomy. Patients were split into the infected (n=51) and uninfected groups (n=227). The inflammatory parameters, complications, and prognosis were compared. RESULTS: In the infected group, interleukin (IL)-6 was 16.19±2.63 ng/L, tumor necrosis factor-α was 19.64±3.07 µg/L, and IL-1ß was 22.49±5.13 ng/L at 7 days postoperatively; white blood cell counts was 12.65±2.14 ×109/L, percentage of neutrophils (NEU%) was 67.04±10.48%, and platelet (PLT) counts was 249.82±63.26 ×109/L; the increasing ranges of the above factors after the operation were much raised compared with the uninfected group (p<0.05). Compared with the uninfected group, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC were greater declines in ranges (p<0.05), and the arrhythmia incidence and the mortality within 60 days postoperatively were greater in the infected group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Postoperative pulmonary infection can lead to pulmonary function damage, proinflammatory factor overexpression, and an increased risk of early death.

Introduction: Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is ubiquitously hyper-activated in numerous cancers, rendering it an appealing target for therapeutic intervention. Methods and results: In this study, using structure-based virtual screening complemented by molecular dynamics simulations, we identified ten potential STAT3 inhibitors. The simulations pinpointed compounds 8, 9, and 10 as forming distinct hydrogen bonds with the SH2 domain of STAT3. In vitro cytotoxicity assays highlighted compound 4 as a potent inhibitor of gastric cancer cell proliferation across MGC803, KATO III, and NCI-N87 cell lines. Further cellular assays substantiated the ability of compound 4 to attenuate IL-6-mediated STAT3 phosphorylation at Tyr475. Additionally, oxygen consumption rate assays corroborated compound 4's deleterious effects on mitochondrial function. Discussion: Collectively, our findings position compound 4 as a promising lead candidate warranting further exploration in the development of anti-gastric cancer therapeutics.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the dyadic interrelationships between supportive care needs (SCNs) and quality of life (QOL) among lung cancer (LC) survivors and their spousal caregivers. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 443 dyads were recruited from three tertiary hospitals in two cities (Fuzhou and Putian) in Fujian Province, China, between May 2020 and May 2021. The study shows that participants completed a sociodemographic information sheet, the SCNs survey, and answered the Chinese version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF questionnaire by telephone. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlations. This study used the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) with dyad analysis to examine the effect of LC survivors and spouses unmet SCNs on QOL. Results: LC survivor's and spouse's QOL levels were influenced by the level of unmet SCNs (the actor effect). LC survivors unmet SCNs were significantly negatively associated with their spouse's QOL (the partner effect). There were no partner effects between the spouse's unmet SCNs and the LC survivor's QOL. The APIM model produced an acceptable model fit [χ2/df = 2.84 (147), comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.94, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = 0.93, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.07]. Conclusions: The level of unmet SCNs significantly affected QOL in survivor and spouse dyads. Although partner effects were weaker than actor effects, healthcare providers should develop tailored LC dyadic self- and family-management interventions to provide SCN-driven care to LC survivors and their spouses.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the outcomes of patients who received early fiberoptic bronchoscopic sputum aspiration and lavage after thoracoscopic and laparoscopic esophagectomy due to esophageal cancer. METHODS: A prospective randomized clinical trial was performed between March 2020 and June 2022. Patients who were scheduled for thoracoscopic and laparoscopic esophagectomy due to esophageal cancer were enrolled. Then, these patients were assigned to the control group (traditional postoperative care) and study group (traditional postoperative care with early bronchoscopic sputum aspiration and lavage). The outcomes, which included the length of hospital stay and medical expenses, and postoperative complications, which included pulmonary infection, atelectasis, respiratory dysfunction and anastomotic leakage, were compared between these two groups. RESULTS: A total of 106 patients were enrolled for the present study, and 53 patients were assigned for the control and study groups. There were no statistically significant differences in gender, age, and location of the esophageal cancer between the two groups. Furthermore, the length of hospital stay was statistically significantly shorter and the medical expenses were lower during hospitalization in the study group, when compared to the control group (12.3 ± 1.2 vs. 18.8 ± 1.3 days, 5.5 ± 0.9 vs. 7.2 ± 1.2 Chinese Yuan, respectively; all, P < 0.05). Moreover, there were statistically significantly fewer incidences of overall complications in study group, when compared to the control group (20.7% vs.45.2%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: For patients with esophageal cancer, early fiberoptic bronchoscopic sputum aspiration and lavage after thoracoscopic and laparoscopic esophagectomy can shorten the length of hospital stay, and lower the medical expense and incidence of postoperative complications.

A 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4-CzIPN)-photocatalyzed cascade arylation/cyclization reaction of 2-isocyanobiaryls and iodonium ylides was established for the synthesis of 6-arylated phenanthridines. This is the first example of employing iodonium ylides as aryl radical sources in a visible-light-induced radical cascade cyclization reaction.

Despite the successful application of toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis as biological control agents against pests, pests are showing resistance against an increasing number of Bacillus thuringiensis toxins due to evolution; thus, new toxins with higher toxicity and broad-spectrum activity against insects are being increasingly identified. To find new toxins, whole genome sequencing of the novel B. thuringiensis strain Bt S3076-1 was performed, and ten predicted toxic genes were identified in this study, including six cry genes, two tpp genes, one cyt gene and one vip gene, among which six were novel toxins. Subsequently, SDS‒PAGE analysis showed that the major proteins at the spore maturation stage were approximately 120 kDa, 70 kDa, 67 kDa, 60 kDa and 40 kDa, while active proteins after trypsin digestion (approximately 70 kDa and 40 kDa) exhibited LC50 values of 149.64 µg/g and 441.47 µg/g against Spodoptera frugiperda and Helicoverpa armigera larvae, respectively. Furthermore, pathological observation results showed that the peritrophic membrane of Spodoptera frugiperda and Helicoverpa armigera larvae was degraded. These findings will provide an experimental reference for further research on the insecticidal activity, toxicity spectrum and synergism of these toxins in Bt S3076-1.

A simple and practical electron donor-acceptor (EDA) strategy to synthesize various 3-alkylated coumarins from easily available coumarins and naturally abundant carboxylic acids under photocatalyst-, oxidant-, and additive-free and mild conditions is reported. Using Na2S as the catalytic electron donor, a series of primary, secondary, and tertiary carbon radicals can be efficiently generated, and the EDA complex can be regenerated without an alkaline additive.

BACKGROUND: recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) is a common and severe complication of esophagectomy in esophageal cancer (EC). Several studies explored the application of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) in esophagectomy to prevent RLNP. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the value of IONM in esophagectomy for EC. METHODS: an electronic of the literature using Google Scholar, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science (data up to October 2022) was conducted and screened to compare IONM-assisted and conventional non-IONM-assisted esophagectomy. RLNP, the number of mediastinal lymph nodes (LN) dissected, aspiration, pneumonia, chylothorax, anastomotic leakage, the number of total LN dissected, postoperative hospital stay and total operation time were evaluated using Review Manager 5.4.1. RESULT: ten studies were ultimately included, with a total of 949 patients from one randomized controlled trial and nine retrospective case-control studies in the meta-analysis. The present study demonstrated that IONM reduced the incidence of RLNP(Odds Ratio (OR) 0.37, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.26-0.52) and pneumonia (OR 0.58, 95%CI 0.41-0.82) and was associated with more mediastinal LN dissected (Weighted Mean Difference (WMD) 4.75, 95%CI 3.02-6.48) and total mediastinal LN dissected (WMD 5.47, 95%CI 0.39-10.56). In addition, IONM does not increase the incidence of aspiration (OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.07-2.51), chylothorax (OR 0.55, 95%CI 0.17-1.76), and anastomotic leakage (OR 0.78, 95%CI 0.48-1.27) and does not increase the total operative time (WMD -12.33, 95%CI -33.94-9.28) or postoperative hospital stay (WMD -2.07 95%CI -6.61-2.46) after esophagectomy. CONCLUSION: IONM showed advantages for preventing RLNP and pneumonia and was associated with more mediastinal and total LN dissected in esophagectomy. IONM should be recommended for esophagectomy.

Gluten is a key component that allows wheat flour to form a dough, and it is also a byproduct of the production of wheat starch. As a commercial product, wheat gluten is increasingly used in the food-related industry because of its versatile functional properties and wide range of sources. Wheat gluten is manufactured industrially on a large scale through the Martin process and batter process and variants thereof. Gliadin and glutenin impart cohesiveness and elasticity properties, respectively, to wheat gluten. The formation of gluten networks and polymers depends mainly on covalent bonds (disulfide bonds) and noncovalent bonds (ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions). The multifunctional properties (viscoelasticity, gelation, foamability, etc.) of wheat gluten are shown by rehydration and other processing techniques. Wheat gluten has been widely used in wheat-based products, food auxiliary agents, food packaging, encapsulation and release of food functional ingredients, food adsorption and heat insulation materials, special purpose foods, and versatile applications. In the future, wheat gluten protein will be used as an important raw material to participate in the development and preparation of various food and degradable materials, and the application potential of wheat gluten in food-related industries will be massive. This review summarizes the main manufacturing processes, composition, and structure of gluten protein, and the various functional properties that support its application in the food and related industries.

We studied the effect of freeze-thaw on isoflavone composition in germinated soybeans, particularly the conversion of aglycones, the isoflavone monomers with high biological activity. Germinated soybeans were frozen at -20 °C, -80 °C, and -196 °C respectively, and then the frozen samples (-20 °C) were thawed at 4 °C, 10 °C, and 25 °C respectively. Results showed total isoflavone increased after germination. Aglycones content increased most at -20 °C, which increased about 24 times. The effect of thaw temperature and time indicated there were approximately 89 % glucosides forms converted to aglycones during freeze-thaw. Isoflavone conjugate-hydrolyzing ß-glucosidase (ICHG) activity increased by 65.78 % (25 °C) and 59.14 % (48 h) with freeze-thaw. The cells of germinated soybeans were broken, promoting ICHG contact with glucosides and malonyl-glucosides. These results indicated that freeze-thaw greatly changed the content and profile of isoflavones, resulting in a sharp increase in the content of aglycones.

To understand the formation process of dough with different hydration levels upon mixing and the response of dough rheology, the dynamic evolution of gluten protein was tracked and quantified at morphological, structural, and molecular levels. Both macroscopical and microscopic distribution images showed that partial and full hydration induced quick formation of a more compact gluten network compared with limited hydration. Gluten network in highly hydrated samples was more susceptible to the formation and collapse induced by mechanical force. SE-HPLC results indicated significant depolymerization of glutenin macropolymer (GMP) in fully and partially hydrated samples. Sufficient mixing was accompanied by the increase of ionic and hydrogen bonds, while excessive mixing increased exposure of free -SH. Higher hydration level induced more ordered secondary structure. Correlation and principal component analysis revealed the patterns and dynamics of gluten evolution during dough formation with different hydration levels, and their contribution to the changes in dough modulus.

Cold plasma has been used to promote seed germination. In this study, soybean seeds were directly treated with cold plasma (CP) for different durations (0, 30, 60, 120, and 180 s) and then cultivated with cold-plasma-activated water (PAW) during germination. The effects of CP and PAW treatment on the physical-biochemical properties and nutritional components of soybean sprouts were investigated. The results showed that sprout length increased by 41.07% after moderate CP (60 s) and further increased with PAW. The fresh weight increased by 11.24% after moderate CP treatment. Although sugar content decreased with CP, it increased with PAW. Total amino acid and isoflavone content increased after moderate CP treatment. Both CP and PAW treatments increased the intercellular water and weakened the fluidity of water, and small-molecule proteins were polymerized into large-molecule proteins. The solubility of protein was enhanced under PAW treatment. However, neither PAW nor CP treatment exerted a significant influence on the secondary structure of proteins. The hardness of the soybean sprouts decreased and their fracturability increased after moderate CP treatment. This study demonstrates that cold plasma has the potential to enhance the biomass and edible quality of soybean sprouts.

The first example of the electrocatalytic multicomponent synthesis of 4-chloro/bromo/iodopyrazoles from hydrazines, acetylacetones and sodium halides under chemical oxidant- and external electrolyte-free conditions has been developed. Sodium halides played a dual role as a halogenation reagent and a supporting electrolyte. Mechanism studies revealed that the bromination reaction proceeded via an ionic pathway, whereas both chlorination and iodination proceeded via a radical pathway.

Patients who recovered from the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may experience a range of long-term symptoms. Since the lung is the most common site of the infection, pulmonary sequelae may present persistently in COVID-19 survivors. To better understand the symptoms associated with impaired lung function in patients with post-COVID-19, we aimed to build a deep learning model which conducts two tasks: to differentiate post-COVID-19 from healthy subjects and to identify post-COVID-19 subtypes, based on the latent representations of lung computed tomography (CT) scans. CT scans of 140 post-COVID-19 subjects and 105 healthy controls were analyzed. A novel contrastive learning model was developed by introducing a lung volume transform to learn latent features of disease phenotypes from CT scans at inspiration and expiration of the same subjects. The model achieved 90% accuracy for the differentiation of the post-COVID-19 subjects from the healthy controls. Two clusters (C1 and C2) with distinct characteristics were identified among the post-COVID-19 subjects. C1 exhibited increased air-trapping caused by small airways disease (4.10%, p = 0.008) and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide %predicted (DLCO %predicted, 101.95%, p < 0.001), while C2 had decreased lung volume (4.40L, p < 0.001) and increased ground glass opacity (GGO%, 15.85%, p < 0.001). The contrastive learning model is able to capture the latent features of two post-COVID-19 subtypes characterized by air-trapping due to small airways disease and airway-associated interstitial fibrotic-like patterns, respectively. The discovery of post-COVID-19 subtypes suggests the need for different managements and treatments of long-term sequelae of patients with post-COVID-19.

Background: The counts of examined lymph nodes (ELNs) in predicting the prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a controversial issue. We conducted a retrospective study to develop an ELNs-based model to individualize ESCC prognosis. Methods: Patients with ESCC from the SEER database and our center were strictly screened. The optimal threshold value was determine by the X-tile software. A prognostic model for ESCC patients was developed and validated with R. The model's efficacy was evaluated by C-index, ROC curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: 3,629 cases and 286 cases were screened from the SEER database and our center, respectively. The optimal cut-off value of ELNs was 10. Based on this, we constructed a model with a favorable C-index (training group: 0.708; external group 1: 0.687; external group 2: 0.652). The model performance evaluated with ROC curve is still reliable among the groups. 1-year AUC for nomogram in three groups (i.e., 0.753, 0.761, and 0.686) were superior to that of the TNM stage (P < 0.05). Similarly, the 3-year AUC and the 5-year AUC results for the model were also higher than that of the 8th TNM stage. By contrast, DCA showed the benefit of this model was better in the same follow-up period. Conclusion: More than 10 ELNs are helpful to evaluate the survival of ESCC patients. Based on this, an improved model for predicting the prognosis of ESCC patients was proposed.

Zirconium is a silvery-white malleable and ductile metal at room temperature with a crustal abundance of 162 ppm. Its compounds, showing Lewis acidic behavior and high catalytic performance, have been recognized as a relatively cheap, low-toxicity, stable, green, and efficient catalysts for various important organic transformations. Commercially available inorganic zirconium chloride was widely applied as a catalyst to accelerate amination, Michael addition, and oxidation reactions. Well-designed zirconocene perfluorosulfonates can be applied in allylation, acylation, esterification, etc. N-Chelating oganozirconium complexes accelerate polymerization, hydroaminoalkylation, and CO2 fixation efficiently. In this review, the applications of both commercially available and synthesized zirconium catalysts in organic reactions in the last 5 years are highlighted. Firstly, the properties and application of zirconium and its compounds are simply introduced. After presenting the superiority of zirconium compounds, their applications as catalysts to accelerate organic transformations are classified and presented in detail. On the basis of different kinds of zirconium catalysts, organic reactions accelerated by inorganic zirconium catalysts, zirconium catalysts bearing Cp, and organozirconium catalysts without Cp are summarized, and the plausible reaction mechanisms are presented if available.

The effects of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on the physiological properties, phenolic acid accumulation, and dough-making quality of wheat during germination were investigated. UV-B radiation inhibited the wheat sprout length and reduced the dry matter loss. As phenolic acids were principally present in the kernels' bran, UV-B radiation could promote their accumulation in the interior of germinated wheat (GW). The total phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid, and antioxidant activity were also enhanced significantly during germination with UV-B. UV-B improved the development time, stability time, rheological properties, and viscosity of GW, and inhibited the α-amylase activity, the destruction of the amorphous region of starch particles, and the proteins degradation process during germination, and thus the deterioration of dough-making quality caused by germination was inhibited. Therefore, UV-B radiation could be a potential approach to enhance the nutritional and dough-making quality of germinated whole wheat flour.

To understand the formation of gluten network and its regulation on noodle qualities upon mixing and resting, the dynamic distribution and molecular transformation of gluten were tracked and quantified. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images showed that appropriate mixing (8 min) and resting (60 min) induced a compact gluten network with higher gluten junctions. Both height and width of protein molecular chains were increased by hydration during mixing and reduced after excessive resting (90 min). According to the size exclusion/reversed phase-HPLC profiles, mixing induced slight depolymerization of large glutenin polymer, and α-gliadin subunits were more susceptible to polymerization after appropriate mixing and resting. Increased mixing time was accompanied by the strengthening of ionic and hydrogen bonds, and the weakening of hydrophobic interaction. PCA and correlation analysis revealed the accurate regulation of mixing and resting induced dynamic distribution and evolution of gluten on the macroscopic noodle qualities.
