Background: Many studies have reported the effects of spicy food on human health, but no studies have been conducted on the impact of long-term spicy food consumption on bone mineral density (BMD). This study aimed to investigate the impact of daily consumption of spicy food on BMD in the population aged 50 years and older. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2020 to 2022 in Jiangxi Province, China. This study investigated the differences in BMD between non-consumers and daily spicy food consumers in adults aged 50-85 years. A multiple linear regression model was used to investigate the association between spicy food consumption and BMD of the total lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), and total hip, as well as biochemical markers of bone metabolism (BMBM) levels. Results: The results showed that daily consumption of spicy food was negatively associated with total LS BMD (ß = -0.013, P = 0.015). Subgroup analyses showed this negative association was more pronounced among smokers and drinkers compared to non-smokers (ß: -0.006 vs. -0.042; P for interaction <0.05) and non-drinkers (ß: -0.004 vs. -0.037; P for interaction <0.05). In addition, according to the daily frequency of spicy food consumption, the daily spicy food consumers were categorized into one meal per day, two meals per day, and three meals per day groups. Further analysis revealed that the negative association between spicy food and total LS BMD was progressively stronger as the frequency of daily consumption of spicy food increased (P for trend <0.05). For BMBM, daily consumption of spicy food was positively associated with serum PINP levels and negatively associated with serum Ca and serum Mg levels. Conclusions: Our study suggested that daily consumption of spicy food was associated with lower LS BMD in middle-aged and older Chinese adults, and this association was more pronounced in the smoking and drinking populations. The adverse effects of spicy food on LS BMD become progressively stronger with increasing frequency of daily consumption of spicy food. In addition, daily consumption of spicy food was associated with higher PINP levels and lower serum Ca and Mg levels.

The novel loquat cultivar 'Chunhua No.1' (CH1) is a promising commercial cultivar. However, CH1 has texture characteristics different from those of common loquat, and its formation mechanism remains unclear. Here, we first identified the phenolic compounds of CH1 and its parent ('Dawuxing', DWX) and the effect on texture formation. The special presence of stone cells explained the flavor differences in CH1. Chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid, and coniferyl alcohol were the main phenolic compounds in loquat, and the high content of coniferyl alcohol was a potential factor for the rough texture of CH1. Transcriptome reveals that phenylpropanoid metabolism was activated during CH1 fruit texture formation. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) identified 51 structural genes involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) identified four structural genes and 88 transcription factors. These findings provide new insights into the phenolic metabolism and flavor formation of loquat fruit.

Graphite negative electrodes are unbeaten hitherto in lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) due to their unique chemical and physical properties. Thus, the increasing scarcity of graphite resources makes smart recycling or repurposing of discarded graphite particularly imperative. However, the current recycling techniques still need to be improved upon with urgency. Herein a facile and efficient hydrometallurgical process is reported to effectively regenerate aged (39.5 %, 75 % state-of-health, SOH) scrapped graphite (SG) from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. Ultimately, the first cycle reversible capacity of SG1 (SOH = 39.5 %) improved from 266 mAh/g to 337 mAh/g while 330 mAh/g (98 %) remain after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. The reversible capacity for the first cycle of SG2 (SOH = 75 %) boosted from 335 mAh/g to 366 mAh/g with the capacity retention of 99.3 % after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, which is comparable with the benchmark commercial graphite. The regenerated graphites RG1 and RG2 exhibit excellent output characteristics even increasing the rate up to 4 C. This is the best rate level reported in the literature to date. Finally, the diffusion coefficient of Li ions during deintercalation and intercalation in the regenerated graphites have been measured by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), determining values 2 orders-of-magnitude higher than that of the spent counterparts. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of acid leaching and heat treatment, this strategy provides a simple and up-scalable method to recycle graphitic anodes.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare hematological malignancy with limited treatment options, and it is also prone to complications such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in the later stages of the disease, leading to difficulties in treatment and poor prognosis. It highlights the importance of developing novel therapeutic agents. Herein, we present a case of a 45-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with PD-L1-positive HS with HLH. The patient was admitted to our hospital with recurrent high fever, multiple skin rashes with pruritus throughout the body and enlarged lymph nodes. Subsequently, pathological biopsy of the lymph nodes revealed high expression of CD163, CD68, S100, Lys and CD34 in the tumor cells and no expression of CD1a and CD207, confirming this rare clinical diagnosis. Concerning the low remission rate by conventional treatment in this disease, the patient was administered with sintilimab (an anti-programmed cell death 1 [anti-PD-1] monoclonal antibody) at 200 mg/d combined with a first-line chemotherapy regimen for one cycle. Further exploration of pathological biopsy by using next-generation gene sequencing led to the use of targeted therapy of chidamide. After one cycle of combination therapy (chidamide+sintilimab, abbreviated as CS), the patient achieved a favorable response. The patient showed remarkable improvement in the general symptoms and laboratory examination results (e.g., elevated indicators of inflammation); even the clinical benefits was not persistent, he survived one more month after his cessation of treatment by himself due to economic difficulty. Our case suggests that PD-1 inhibitor coupled with targeted therapy might constitute a potential therapeutic option for primary HS with HLH.

Zanthoxylum armatum is an important cash crop for medicinal and food purposes in Asia. However, its stems and leaves are covered with a large number of prickles, which cause many problems in the production process. The homeodomain leucine zipper (HD-ZIP) gene family is a class of transcription factors unique to plants that play an important role in biological processes such as morphogenesis, signal transduction, and secondary metabolite synthesis. However, little is known about HD-ZIP gene information that may be involved in prickle development of Z. armatum. Here, we identified 76 ZaHDZ genes from the Z. armatum genome and classified them into four subfamilies (I-IV) based on phylogenetic analysis, a classification further supported by gene structure and conserved motif analysis. Seventy-six ZaHDZ genes were unevenly distributed on chromosomes. Evolutionary analysis revealed that the expansion of ZaHDZ genes mainly were due to whole-genome duplication (WGD) or segmental duplication, and they experienced strong purifying selection pressure in the process of evolution. A total of 47 cis-elements were identified in the promoter region of ZaHDZ genes. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis was performed on subfamily IV ZaHDZ gene expression levels in five tissues and under four hormone treatments. Finally, ZaHDZ16 was predicted to be the candidate gene most likely to be involved in prickle development of Z. armatum. These results contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics of HD-ZIP gene family and lay a foundation for further study on the function of genes related to prickle development of Z. armatum.

Introduction: The correlation between the non-use of cooking oil fumes (COFs) extractors and bone mineral density (BMD) have not been clarified. Consequently, this study attempted to explore the impact of non-use COFs extractors on BMD in population aged 45 years and older based on a cross-sectional study. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study within the framework of an ongoing prospective population-based cohort study in China. The multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate the correlation between the non-use of fume extractors in family cooking and total lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), total hip BMD and levels of bone metabolism markers. Results: A total of 3433 participants were included in the final analyses, of which 2607 (75.93%) participants used fume extractors. The results of models indicated that there were significant correlations of the non-use of fume extractors on total LS BMD (ß = -0.024, 95% CI, -0.036, -0.012, p < 0.001), PINP (ß = 4.363, 95% CI, 2.371, 6.356, p < 0.001) and ALP (ß = 4.555, 95% CI, 2.593, 6.517, p < 0.001) levels. Conclusions: This study verified that the use of fume extractors is an efficacious measure to prevent LS bone loss. For the sake of public bone health, people should install a fume extractor in the kitchen and use it routinely when cooking.

In this study, third-generation full-length (FL) transcriptome sequencing was performed of loquat using single-molecule real-time(SMRT) sequencing from the pooled cDNA of embryos of young loquat fruit under different low temperatures (three biological replicates for treatments of 1°C, -1°C, and -3°C, for 12 h or 24 h) and the control group(three biological replicates for treatments of room temperature), Illumina sequencing was used to correct FL transcriptome sequences. A total of 3 PacBio Iso-Seq libraries (1-2 kb, 2-3 kb and 3-6 kb) and 21 Illumina transcriptome libraries were constructed, a total of 13.41 Gb of clean reads were generated, which included 215,636 reads of insert (ROIs) and 121,654 FL, non-chimaric (FLNC) reads. Transcript clustering analysis of the FLNC reads revealed 76,586 consensus isoforms, and a total of 12,520 high-quality transcript sequences corrected with non-FL sequences were used for subsequent analysis. After the redundant reads were removed, 38,435 transcripts were obtained. A total of 27,905 coding DNA sequences (CDSs) were identified, and 407 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were ultimately predicted. Additionally, 24,832 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were identified, and a total of 1,295 alternative splicing (AS) events were predicted. Furthermore, 37,993 transcripts were annotated in eight functional databases. This is the first study to perform SMRT sequencing of the FL transcriptome of loquat. The obtained transcriptomic data are conducive for further exploration of the mechanism of loquat freezing injury and thus serve as an important theoretical basis for generating new loquat material and for identifying new ways to improve loquat cold resistance.
