RESUMO

Understanding and harnessing renewable energy potential is imperative for developing nations in the context of climate change. However, the wind potential of Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire, remains inadequately explored. This study employs a Longitudinal Observational Study design, acquiring data at 1-min intervals to capture the dynamic wind characteristics. The research focuses on refining ground data and estimating wind potential using a DAVIS Pro weather station with a cup anemometer for speed and a wind vane for direction. Wind speed and direction are measured in meters per second and degrees. Two distinct approaches are employed for data analysis: arithmetic and cubic averages provide representative values, and the Two-Parameter Weibull Probability Distribution Functions, determined through the method of moments, offer insights into the wind distribution pattern. The study's findings indicate an 8-h time slot during which the wind potential permits obtaining an annual energy production of 53,38 kW/h/m2, a valuable window of opportunity. The rainy season, particularly May, has the highest average monthly wind speed, while the dry season in December has the lowest. Furthermore, the wind rose analysis reveals that the prevailing winds blow from south to north, further highlighting the region's wind potential. The results affirm that Yamoussoukro harbors a moderate wind potential, aptly harnessed through Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT). This discovery holds significant implications for sustainable development, highlighting the city's potential to transition towards a greener, more energy-efficient economy. Yamoussoukro is poised to contribute substantially to renewable energy and climate change mitigation efforts by unlocking the untapped wind energy potential.

By directly altering microscopic interactions, pressure provides a powerful tuning knob for the exploration of condensed phases and geophysical phenomena1. The megabar regime represents an interesting frontier, in which recent discoveries include high-temperature superconductors, as well as structural and valence phase transitions2-6. However, at such high pressures, many conventional measurement techniques fail. Here we demonstrate the ability to perform local magnetometry inside a diamond anvil cell with sub-micron spatial resolution at megabar pressures. Our approach uses a shallow layer of nitrogen-vacancy colour centres implanted directly within the anvil7-9; crucially, we choose a crystal cut compatible with the intrinsic symmetries of the nitrogen-vacancy centre to enable functionality at megabar pressures. We apply our technique to characterize a recently discovered hydride superconductor, CeH9 (ref. 10). By performing simultaneous magnetometry and electrical transport measurements, we observe the dual signatures of superconductivity: diamagnetism characteristic of the Meissner effect and a sharp drop of the resistance to near zero. By locally mapping both the diamagnetic response and flux trapping, we directly image the geometry of superconducting regions, showing marked inhomogeneities at the micron scale. Our work brings quantum sensing to the megabar frontier and enables the closed-loop optimization of superhydride materials synthesis.

Molecular clocks are the basis for dating the divergence between lineages over macroevolutionary timescales (~105 to 108 years). However, classical DNA-based clocks tick too slowly to inform us about the recent past. Here, we demonstrate that stochastic DNA methylation changes at a subset of cytosines in plant genomes display a clocklike behavior. This "epimutation clock" is orders of magnitude faster than DNA-based clocks and enables phylogenetic explorations on a scale of years to centuries. We show experimentally that epimutation clocks recapitulate known topologies and branching times of intraspecies phylogenetic trees in the self-fertilizing plant Arabidopsis thaliana and the clonal seagrass Zostera marina, which represent two major modes of plant reproduction. This discovery will open new possibilities for high-resolution temporal studies of plant biodiversity.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article was to explore the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) and to provide valuable information for public health professionals and policymakers to improve quality of life and reduce mortality. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data pooled from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). METHODS: This study involved 102,393 US adult participants from the 2020 BRFSS. The zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) and mixed graphical model (MGM) models were used to explore the effect of ACEs on CCI and the interaction between ACEs. RESULTS: In the count part of the model (CCI ≥0), sexual abuse had the strongest association with CCI (relative risk [RR] = 1.111, P < 0.001). In the logit part of the model (CCI = 0), the likelihood of having CCI equal to 0 decreased by 23.0% for household substance abuse, which was the highest percentage decrease for all ACEs. Compared to those with ACE scores equal to 0, individuals with ACE scores ≥4 have an expected CCI RR of 1.222, and the likelihood of having CCI equal to 0 decreased by 50.2%. Household substance abuse and incarceration history in the home had the strongest association among interactions of ACEs (0.85). CONCLUSIONS: Associations between ACEs and CCI were observed in this study, and these associations differed between genders. The findings of this study provide data to design strategies for disease prevention and improvement of quality of life.

The most direct approach for characterizing the quantum dynamics of a strongly interacting system is to measure the time evolution of its full many-body state. Despite the conceptual simplicity of this approach, it quickly becomes intractable as the system size grows. An alternate approach is to think of the many-body dynamics as generating noise, which can be measured by the decoherence of a probe qubit. Here we investigate what the decoherence dynamics of such a probe tells us about the many-body system. In particular, we utilize optically addressable probe spins to experimentally characterize both static and dynamical properties of strongly interacting magnetic dipoles. Our experimental platform consists of two types of spin defects in nitrogen delta-doped diamond: nitrogen-vacancy colour centres, which we use as probe spins, and a many-body ensemble of substitutional nitrogen impurities. We demonstrate that the many-body system's dimensionality, dynamics and disorder are naturally encoded in the probe spins' decoherence profile. Furthermore, we obtain direct control over the spectral properties of the many-body system, with potential applications in quantum sensing and simulation.

Denial and rumors are two major obstacles impairing the implementation of activities in response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic. This study investigated the roles of denial and rumors, among other challenges, in complicating the response to the EVD outbreak in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A total of 800 randomly selected respondents were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 community religious and opinion leaders, as well as Ebola survivors. Furthermore, 20 focus group discussions were conducted with adult and youth male and female participants, and health care workers. The results revealed that the existence of the disease is widely denied by many, including political leaders, village chiefs, neighborhood chiefs, street chiefs, avenue chiefs, and members of the general population. These individuals generally consider the EVD to be the result of a misbehavior or a curse; consequently, the general population, including community members, teachers, and even health care professionals, refuse to comply with the authorities' strategies to fight the epidemic. Rumors are another obstacle in response efforts. Rumors pertaining to the denial of the existence of the EVD, as well as the epidemic, Ebola treatment centers, hospitals, vaccines, and safe and dignified burials have been identified. Rumors about the EVD and the response, spread by clerics, traditional therapists, men, and women, including healthcare professionals in focus group discussions, portrayed the EVD as an invention, as if the virus had been created. The response to the EVD has been marked by these two constraints, which have often hindered the involvement of community members in the fight against the disease.

Aim: To identify the key risk factors of intrauterine hepatitis B virus transmission (HBV) and its effect on the placenta and fetus. Methods: 425 infants born to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive pregnant women who received combined immunization with hepatitis B immunoglobulin and hepatitis B vaccine between 2009 to 2015 were prospectively enrolled in this study. The intrauterine transmission situation was assessed by dynamic monitoring of infants HBV DNA load and quantitative HBsAg. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis was used to determine the high risk factors for intrauterine transmission. Stratified analysis was used to determine the relationship between maternal HBV DNA load and fetal distress. Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe HBV Effects on placental tissue. Results: HBV intrauterine infection rate was 2.6% (11/425). Multivariate analysis result showed that the maternal HBV DNA load was an independent risk factor for intrauterine infection among infants (P=0.011). Intrauterine infection and distress rate was significantly higher in infants with with maternal HBV DNA>106 IU/ml than those with HBV DNA <106 IU/ml (12.2% vs. 1.8%; χ2=11.275, P=0.006), and (24.4% vs. 16.0%, χ2=3.993, P=0.046). Transmission electron microscopy showed that mitochondrial edema, endoplasmic reticulum expansion and thicker basement membrane were apparent when the maternal HBV DNA>106 IU/ml than that of maternal HBV DNA<106 IU/ml (960 nm vs. 214 nm, Z=-2.782, P=0.005) in the placental tissue. Conclusion: Maternal HBV DNA>106 IU/ml is associated not only with intrauterine infection, but also with increased incidence of intrauterine distress and placental sub-microstructural changes, providing strong clinical and histological evidence for pregnancy avoidance and treatment in this population.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple trials on sodium-glucose cotransporter (SGLT) inhibitors have been performed recently demonstrating blood pressure (BP) reduction benefits in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients. Hence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of different SGLT inhibitors on BP in both patients with and without diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and SCOPUS) were searched on 4 November 2021 for articles published from 1 January 2000 up to 21 November 2021, for studies evaluating the BP effects of SGLT inhibitors. Pair-wise meta-analysis and random effects metaregression models were utilized. RESULTS: In total, 111 studies examining SBP (108 studies, 104 304 patients) and/or DBP (82 studies, 74 719 patients) were included. In patients with diabetes, the random effects model demonstrated SGLT inhibitor produced a mean reduction in SBPs of -3.46 mmHg (95% confidence interval: -3.83, -3.09) compared with placebo. There were no statistically significant changes in BP among patients without diabetes. Drug response relationship was not observed in SGLT inhibitors and BP, except for Canagliflozin and DBP. CONCLUSION: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors and combined sodium-glucose cotransporter 1/2 inhibitors produced small reductions in BP in patients with diabetes.

Objective: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) in the comprehensive treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer. Methods: Literatures were screened from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CBM, Wanfang Data, VIP and CNKI from the inception date to May 2021 to collect the randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) of TNT followed by total mesorectal excision (TME) versus neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCRT) followed by TME in the treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer. The data of overall survival, disease-free survival, R0 radical resection rate, pathological complete response (pCR) rate, T downstaging rate, the incidence of adverse events ≥ grade III, including neutropenia, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, radiation dermatitis and nervous system toxicity, and the morbidity of complications within postoperative 30 days of the two groups were extracted from the included literatures. Review Manager 5.3 software was utilized for statistical meta-analysis. Results: Nine RCTs were finally enrolled including 2430 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that compared with nCRT group, patients in TNT group had longer overall survival (HR=0.80, 95%CI: 0.65-0.97, P=0.03) and higher pCR rate (RR=1.73, 95%CI: 1.44-2.08, P<0.01) with significant differences. Besides, there were no significant differences between two groups in disease-free survival (HR=0.86, 95%CI:0.71-1.05, P=0.14), R0 radical resection rate (RR=1.02, 95%CI: 0.99-1.06, P=0.17) and T downstaging rate (RR=1.04, 95%CI: 0.89-1.22, P=0.58) between two groups. In terms of treatment safety, the incidence of adverse events ≥ grade III (RR=1.09, 95%CI: 0.70-1.70, P=0.70) and morbidity of complications within postoperative 30 days (RR=1.07, 95%CI: 0.97-1.18, P=0.19) did not significantly differ between two groups. Conclusions: In the treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer, TNT may bring more survival benefits than nCRT and does not increase the incidence of adverse events and postoperative complications. Therefore, TNT could be used as a recommended treatment for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to describe modern female and male method awareness, information sources, outreach exposures, and acquisition source awareness among young men aged 15-24 by sexual behavior status in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were conducted with unmarried, young men aged 15-24 recruited via respondent-driven sampling in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (n = 1,028), Nairobi, Kenya (n = 691), and Lagos, Nigeria (n = 706). Descriptive statistics characterized contraception awareness of male and female methods and information sources, outreach exposures, acquisition source awareness, and preferred contraception source. Multivariate regressions characterized factors associated with awareness of each method. RESULTS: Majority of respondents were aged 15-20 (59%), sexually active (65%), and had secondary or more education (89%). Awareness was low for all methods (short-acting reversible contraception, 47%; emergency contraception, 35%; long-acting reversible contraception, 32%; withdrawal, 18%), except condoms (85%). Respondents reported low levels of contraception information sources, recent outreach exposures, and acquisition location awareness that varied by sexual behavior (higher among sexually active than nonsexually active respondents). Multivariate analyses demonstrated common factors associated across awareness of all methods included information sources (teacher, friend, Internet, social media for all respondents; pharmacist for sexually active respondents) and acquisition locations (private healthcare, pharmacy, market/store for all respondents; public healthcare, mobile clinic, faith-based organizations for sexually active respondents). Sexually active respondents' rank order for preferred contraception source was doctors/nurses followed by teachers, friends, mothers, and fathers; and for nonsexually active respondents' rank order was teachers followed by friends, mothers, doctors/nurses, and health centers. DISCUSSION: Findings have implications for increasing young men's method awareness, specific sources, and settings to target contraceptive outreach.

Objective: This study aimed to see how different initial treatment regimens affected the long-term prognosis of patients with extranodal marginal zone mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma confining to the ocular adnexal (OAML) . Methods: Between April 2008 and April 2019, 109 patients with initial mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue confining to ocular adnexal were evaluated and followed-up, and the prognosis of various initial treatment regimens were examined. Results: A total of 36 patients underwent complete surgical resection of the lesions, and 73 patients had residual lesions after surgery, of which 37 patients chose watchful waiting, and 36 patients chose treatment. The treatment regimen included local radiotherapy and systemic treatment (chemotherapy, immunochemotherapy, the combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, etc.) , and no serious toxic and side effects were observed in patients receiving systemic treatment. The median follow-up time was 61 (10-142) months. The 5-year and 10-year progression-free survival (PFS) of monocular involvement patients were 78.2% and 76.0% . The 5-year and 10-year PFS rates of patients with binocular involvement were 64.4% and 23.5%. There was significant diference in PFS between patients with monocular and binocular involvement (P=0.010) . Patients who received additional treatment had higher PFS than those patients in the watchful waiting group (P=0.046) . The 5-year PFS was 71.4% and 90.1% among patients in the watchful waiting group and those who received additional treatment, whereas the 10-year PFS was 63.5% and 75.1% , respectively. Patients with OAML were still a risk of disease progression after 5 years. Conclusions: Patients with binocular involvement OAML at the start of the disease had a poor prognosis, but treatment could reduce the risk of recurrence/progression. Systemic therapy is one of the first-line treatment options for patients with OAML, who require long-term monitoring.

Objective: To construct a novel prognostic nomogram model based on more comprehensive variables for patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Methods: The data of 722 patients with SCLC confirmed by pathology in Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from January 2015 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed [including 592 males and 130 females, aged from 23 to 82(61±9) years]. A random seed count of 133 was used to divide those patients into training set (n=422) and validation set (n=300). Kaplan-Meier was used for survival curves analysis and univariate Log-rank test was used for evaluating the influence of clinical variables on the prognosis of sclc, variables with P<0.05 in univariate analysis were included in a multivariate Cox regression model. The nomogram was constructed based on the variables which P<0.05 in multivariate analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration by Integrated Brier score (IBS) and clinical net benefit by decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate model discriminative power, prediction error value, and clinical net benefit, and compared with the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th TNM. Results: Male, abnormal monocyte (MON) counts, abnormal neuron specific enolase (NSE), abnormal cytokeratin 19 fragment (Cyfra211), M1a stage, M1b stage, M1c stage, radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy ≥4 cycles and prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) were prognostic factors for SCLC[HR(95%CI)=1.39(1.00-1.92), 1.29(1.02-1.63), 1.41(1.11-1.80), 2.02(1.48-2.76), 1.09(0.77-1.55), 1.44(0.94-2.22), 2.01(1.49-2.71), 0.75(0.57-0.98), 0.40(0.31-0.51)and 0.42(0.26-0.68), respectively, all P<0.05]. The area under ROC curve (AUC) of the nomogram in training set and validation set were 0.814(95%CI: 0.765-0.862)and 0.787 (95%CI: 0.725-0.849), which were higher than TNM [0.616(95%CI: 0.558-0.674) and 0.648(95%CI: 0.581-0.715)].The calibration curve showed a good correlation between the nomogram prediction and actual observation for the 2-year overall survival (OS). IBS indicted a lower prediction error rate (training set: 0.132 vs 0.169; validation set: 0.138 vs 0.169). DCA showed a wider threshold range than TNM (training set: 0.01-0.96 vs 0.01-0.85, validation set: 0.01-0.94 vs 0.01-0.86) and a greater improvement of the clinical net benefit (in training set the nomogram had a greater clinical benefit than TNM in the range of 0.19-0.96, and remained in validation set in the range of 0.19-0.94). Conclusion: The established nomogram model for predicting 2-year OS in patients with SCLC based on 8 variables, including gender, MON, NSE, Cyfra211, M stage, RT, CT cycles and PCI can be used for an more accurately prognosis prediction and reference for therapeutic regimen selection.

Objective: To analyze the proportion and clinical characteristics of underdiagnosed zonulopathy in angle closure glaucoma (ACG) patients and to explore the related risk factors. Methods: Case-control study. Continuous cases of ACG patients who underwent phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation and goniosynechialysis surgery [ACG group, including acute angle closure glaucoma (AACG) and chronic angle closure glaucoma (CACG)] from November 1, 2020 to October 31, 2021 and age-related cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation surgery in the same period (control group) were included. The diagnosis of zonulopathy was determined according to the intraoperative signs such as wrinkles of the anterior capsule during continuous circular capsulorhexis. The proportion of zonulopathy, preoperative diagnosis rate of zonulopathy, demographic characteristics, anterior chamber depth (ACD), axis length, difference of ACD in both eyes (ACD of the contralateral eye minus ACD of the operated eye) were compared between the two groups. The related risk factors were explored. The paired t-test (comparison between two groups of normally distributed data), non-parametric test (comparison between two groups of non-normally distributed data), Chi-square test (categorical variables), univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used. Results: There were 104 ACG patients (104 eyes), including 63 AACG patients (63 eyes) and 41 CACG patients (41 eyes), and 117 controls (117 eyes). There was no significant difference in age (P=0.29) and gender (P=0.07) between the two groups. The ACG group had shallower anterior chamber (P<0.001), shorter axial length (P<0.001) and more ACD difference in both eyes (P<0.001). In the ACG group, the proportion of zonulopathy was 46.2% (48/104), which was significantly higher than that (6.0%, 7/117) in the control group (P<0.001). In the control group, only zonular laxity was found, while in the ACG group, besides the predominant zonular laxity (68.8%, 33/48), there was zonular dehiscence (31.3%, 15/48). The eyes with AACG (57.1%, 36/63) had a higher proportion of zonulopathy than those with CACG (29.3%, 12/41) (P=0.006). In the ACG group, only 14 cases (29.8%) were diagnosed preoperatively according to slit lamp examination and/or ultrasound biomicroscopy. The proportion of underdiagnosed zonulopathy was 70.8% in the ACG group (34/48). A smaller ACD was found to be related to the zonulopathy in the ACG group. All AACG cases with an ACD ≤2.0 mm and CACG cases with an ACD ≤1.9 mm had zonulopathy. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the ACD difference in both eyes (P=0.025) and the diagnosis of ACG (AACG vs. cataract, P<0.001; CACG vs. cataract, P=0.023) were independent risk factors associated with zonulopathy. Conclusions: The proportion of underdiagnosed zonulopathy among ACG patients is high. Better preoperative diagnostic methods for zonulopathy are needed. Zonulopathy is common in ACG patients, especially in AACG patients, suggesting that zonulopathy may be related to the pathogenesis of ACG. The shallower the ACD, the riskier the zonulopathy. OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of nosocomial cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between July 2018 and May 2020 in order to inform future interventions. METHODS: Nosocomial cases of EVD were identified during outbreak response surveillance, and a retrospective analysis of cases was conducted according to demographic characteristics and type of health facility (HF). RESULTS: Of 3481 cases of EVD, 579 (16.6%) were nosocomial. Of these, 332 cases occurred in women (57.3%). Patients and visitors accounted for 419 cases (72.4%), of which 79 (18.9%) were aged 6-≤18 years and 108 (25.8%) were aged ≤5 years. Health workers (HWs) accounted for the remaining 160 (27.6%) nosocomial cases. The case fatality rate (CFR) for HWs (66/160, 41.3%) was significantly lower than the CFR for patients and visitors (292/419, 69.7%) (P<0.001). The CFR was higher among cases aged 6-≤18 years (54/79, 68.4%) and ≤5 years (89/108, 82.4%). Referral HFs (>39 beds) had the highest prevalence of nosocomial EVD (148/579, 25.6%). Among HFs with at least one case of nosocomial infection, 50.0% (98/196) were privately owned. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses and traditional healers should be targeted for infection prevention and control training, and supportive supervision should be provided to HFs to mitigate EVD transmission.

To evaluate the effect of autologous blood transfusion (ABT) on hematopoietic stem cells through the observation of the changes in the number and activity of bone marrow CD34+ cells after preoperative autologous blood donation (PABD). Rabbit bone marrow specimens were collected preoperatively (T2), 6 h postoperatively (T3), and 24 h postoperatively (T4). Next, the percentages of CD34+ cells, the cell cycle, and the relative expression of telomeric DNA were measured in each group of rabbits. Peripheral blood specimens were collected before PABD (T1) and at T4 to measure reticulocytes. At T3 and T4, the percentages of CD34+ cells and the expressions of telomeric DNA were significantly higher, and the percentages of cells in the G1 phase were significantly lower in each experimental group compared with those in the blank control group (group A) (P<0.05). Compared with the surgical blood collection group (group C), the CD34+ cells and the expressions of telomeric DNA were significantly higher, and the percentages of cells in the G1 phase were significantly lower in the preoperative autologous whole blood group (group D) and the preoperative autologous blood component group (group E) (P<0.05). Compared with group D, the CD34+ cells and the expressions of telomeric DNA were significantly lower, and the percentages of cells in the G1 phase were significantly higher in group E (P<0.05). At T4, the reticulocyte percentages in the surgery group (group B) and group C were significantly higher than in group E and group D, and the reticulocyte percentages in group E were higher than in group D (P<0.05). This study's findings indicated that ABT suppressed bone marrow hematopoiesis, while autologous blood component transfusion had less of an effect than that of whole blood transfusion. Therefore, PABD blood component transfusion would be superior to autologous whole blood transfusion.

BACKGROUND: Gendered economic and social systems can enable relational power disparities for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), and undercut autonomy to negotiate sex and contraceptive use. Less is known about their accumulation and interplay. This study characterizes relationship power imbalances (age disparity, intimate partner violence [IPV], partner-related fear, transactional sex, and transactional partnerships), and evaluates associations with modern contraceptive use, and sexual/reproductive autonomy threats (condom removal/"stealthing", reproductive coercion, ability to refuse sex, and contraceptive confidence). METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were conducted with unmarried, currently-partnered AGYW aged 15-24 recruited via respondent-driven sampling in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (n = 555; 2018-19), Nairobi, Kenya (n = 332; 2019), and Lagos, Nigeria (n = 179; 2020). Descriptive statistics, Venn diagrams, and multivariate regression models characterized relationship power imbalances, and associations with reproductive autonomy threats and contraceptive use. FINDINGS: Relationship power imbalances were complex and concurrent. In current partnerships, partner-related fears were common (50.4%Nairobi; 54.5%Abidjan; 55.7%Lagos) and physical IPV varied (14.5%Nairobi; 22.1%Abidjan; 9.6%Lagos). IPV was associated with reproductive coercion in Nairobi and Abidjan. Age disparate relationships undermined confidence in contraception in Nairobi. In Nairobi and Lagos, transactional sex outside the relationship was associated with condom stealthing. INTERPRETATION: AGYW face simultaneous gendered power differentials, against the backdrop of gendered social and economic systems. Power imbalances were linked with coercive sexual/reproductive health experiences which are often underrecognized yet represent a potent link between gendered social systems and poor health. Pregnancy prevention efforts for AGYW must address reproductive autonomy threats, and the relational power imbalances and broader gendered systems that enable them.

RESUMO

The discrete time crystal (DTC) is a nonequilibrium phase of matter that spontaneously breaks time-translation symmetry. Disorder-induced many-body localization can stabilize the DTC phase by breaking ergodicity and preventing thermalization. Here, we observe the hallmark signatures of the many-body­localized DTC using a quantum simulation platform based on individually controllable carbon-13 nuclear spins in diamond. We demonstrate long-lived period-doubled oscillations and confirm that they are robust for generic initial states, thus showing the characteristic time-crystalline order across the many-body spectrum. Our results are consistent with the realization of an out-of-equilibrium Floquet phase of matter and introduce a programmable quantum simulator based on solid-state spins for exploring many-body physics.

Conventional wisdom holds that macroscopic classical phenomena naturally emerge from microscopic quantum laws1-7. However, despite this mantra, building direct connections between these two descriptions has remained an enduring scientific challenge. In particular, it is difficult to quantitatively predict the emergent 'classical' properties of a system (for example, diffusivity, viscosity and compressibility) from a generic microscopic quantum Hamiltonian7-14. Here we introduce a hybrid solid-state spin platform, where the underlying disordered, dipolar quantum Hamiltonian gives rise to the emergence of unconventional spin diffusion at nanometre length scales. In particular, the combination of positional disorder and on-site random fields leads to diffusive dynamics that are Fickian yet non-Gaussian15-20. Finally, by tuning the underlying parameters within the spin Hamiltonian via a combination of static and driven fields, we demonstrate direct control over the emergent spin diffusion coefficient. Our work enables the investigation of hydrodynamics in many-body quantum spin systems.

RESUMO

Extending the framework of statistical physics to the nonequilibrium setting has led to the discovery of previously unidentified phases of matter, often catalyzed by periodic driving. However, preventing the runaway heating that is associated with driving a strongly interacting quantum system remains a challenge in the investigation of these newly discovered phases. In this work, we utilize a trapped-ion quantum simulator to observe the signatures of a nonequilibrium driven phase without disorder-the prethermal discrete time crystal. Here, the heating problem is circumvented not by disorder-induced many-body localization, but rather by high-frequency driving, which leads to an expansive time window where nonequilibrium phases can emerge. Floquet prethermalization is thus presented as a general strategy for creating, stabilizing, and studying intrinsically out-of-equilibrium phases of matter.
