In this study, the effects of different salinity gradients and addition of compatible solutes on anaerobic treated effluent water qualities, sludge characteristics and microbial communities were investigated. The increase in salinity resulted in a decrease in particle size of the granular sludge, which was concentrated in the range of 0.5-1.0 mm. The content of EPS (extracellular polymeric substances) in the granular sludge gradually increased with increasing salinity and the addition of betaine (a typical compatible solute). Meanwhile, the microbial community structure was significantly affected by salinity, with high salinity reducing the diversity of bacteria. At higher salinity, Patescibacteria and Proteobacteria gradually became the dominant phylum, with relative abundance increasing to 13.53% and 12.16% at 20 g/L salinity. Desulfobacterota and its subordinate Desulfovibrio, which secrete EPS in large quantities, dominated significantly after betaine addition.Their relative abundance reached 13.65% and 7.86% at phylum level and genus level. The effect of these changes on the treated effluent was shown as the average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate decreased from 82.10% to 79.71%, 78.01%, 68.51% and 64.55% when the salinity gradually increased from 2 g/L to 6, 10, 16 and 20 g/L. At the salinity of 20 g/L, average COD removal increased to 71.65% by the addition of 2 mmol/L betaine. The gradient elevated salinity and the exogenous addition of betaine played an important role in achieving stability of the anaerobic system in a highly saline environment, which provided a feasible strategy for anaerobic treatment of organic saline wastewater.

The extensive use of neonicotinoids (NEOs) in agricultural production has led to their pervasive presence in various environmental matrices, including human samples. Given the central role of fruits and vegetables in daily human diets, it is crucial to evaluate the levels of NEOs residues and their potential health risks. In this study, 3104 vegetable samples and 1567 fruit samples from the Shenzhen city were analyzed. Using the relative potency factor (RPF) method, the residue levels of six representative neonicotinoids, including imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), thiamethoxam (THM), dinotefuran (DIN), clothianidin (CLO), thiacloprid (THI), were systematically evaluated. The estimated daily intake (EDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) for both children and adults were calculated to gauge the prevalence and potential health risks of NEOs in fruits and vegetables. Acetamiprid (ACE) was the most frequently detected NEO in vegetables (69.4%) and fruits (73.9%), making it the predominant contributor to total residues. Further analyses indicated notably higher levels of imidacloprid-equivalent total neonicotinoids (IMIRPF) in root and tuber vegetables (3025 µg/kg) and other fruits (243 µg/kg). A significant strong positive correlation (r = 0.748, P < 0.05) was observed between thiamethoxam (THM) and clothianidin (CLO), possibly due to their shared metabolic pathways. Although the mean HI values for adults and children from daily fruit (adults: 0.02, children: 0.01) and vegetable (adults: 0.02, children: 0.03) intake were generally below safety thresholds, some maximum HI values exceeded these limits, indicating that the potential health risks associated with NEOs exposure should not be overlooked.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the intricate relationship between symptom dimensions, clusters, and cognitive impairments is crucial for early detection and intervention in individuals at clinical high-risk(CHR) for psychosis. This study delves into this complex interplay within a CHR sample and aims to predict the conversion to psychosis. METHODS: A comprehensive cognitive assessment was performed among 744 CHR individuals. The study included a three-year follow-up period to assess conversion to psychosis. Symptom profiles were determined using the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes. By applying factor analysis, symptom dimensions were categorized as dominant negative symptoms(NS), positive symptoms-stressful(PS-S), and positive symptoms-odd(PS-O). The factor scores were used to define three dominant symptom groups. Latent class analysis(LCA) and factor mixture model(FMM) were employed to identify discrete clusters based on symptom patterns. The three-class solution was chosen for the LCA and FMM analysis. RESULTS: Individuals in the dominant NS group exhibited significantly higher conversion rates to psychosis than those in the other groups. Specific cognitive variables, including performance in the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised(Odd ratio, OR=0.702, p=0.001) and Neuropsychological Assessment Battery mazes(OR=0.776, p=0.024), significantly predicted conversion to psychosis. Notably, cognitive impairments associated with NS and PS-S affected different cognitive domains. LCA- and FMM-Cluster 1, characterized by severe NS and PS-O, exhibited more impairments in cognitive domains than other clusters. No significant difference in the conversion rate was observed among LCA and FMM clusters. CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the importance of NS in the development of psychosis and suggest specific cognitive domains that are affected by symptom dimensions.

A major challenge in antiviral antibody therapy is keeping up with the rapid evolution of viruses. Our research shows that nanobodies-single-domain antibodies derived from camelids-can be rapidly re-engineered to combat new viral strains through structure-guided in vitro evolution. Specifically, for viral mutations occurring at nanobody-binding sites, we introduce randomized amino acid sequences into nanobody residues near these mutations. We then select nanobody variants that effectively bind to the mutated viral target from a phage display library. As a proof of concept, we used this approach to adapt Nanosota-3, a nanobody originally identified to target the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of early Omicron subvariants, making it highly effective against recent Omicron subvariants. Remarkably, this adaptation process can be completed in less than two weeks, allowing drug development to keep pace with viral evolution and provide timely protection to humans.

Molecular doping is a key strategy to enhance the electrical conductivity of organic semiconductors. Typically, the electrical conductivity shows a maximum value upon increased doping, after which the conductivity decreases. This decrease in conductivity is commonly attributed to unfavorable changes in the morphology. However, in recent simulation work, has shown, that the conductivity-at high doping-is instead limited by electron-electron repulsion rather than by morphology, at least for some material combinations. Based on the simulations, this limitation is expected to show up in the dependence of the Seebeck coefficient versus carrier density: the Seebeck coefficient will follow Heike's formula if carrier-carrier repulsion limits the conductivity. Here, the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient are measured as a function of doping for a series of n-type organic semiconductors. Additionally, the resulting carrier density is measured using metal-insulator-semiconductor diodes, which link dopant loading and the number of charge carriers. At high carrier densities, the Seebeck coefficient indeed follows Heike's formula, confirming that the conductivity is limited by carrier-carrier repulsion rather than by morphological effects. This study shows that current models of hopping transport in organic semiconductors may be incomplete. As a result, this study offers novel insights in the design of organic semiconductors.

Grasping the roles of epitopes in viral glycoproteins is essential for unraveling the structure and function of these proteins. Up to now, all identified epitopes have been found to either neutralize, have no effect on, or enhance viral entry into cells. Here, we used nanobodies (single-domain antibodies) as probes to investigate a unique epitope on the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, located outside the protein's receptor-binding domain. Nanobody binding to this epitope enhances the cell entry of prototypic SARS-CoV-2, while neutralizing the cell entry of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant. Moreover, nanobody binding to this epitope promotes both receptor binding activity and post-attachment activity of prototypic spike, explaining the enhanced viral entry. The opposite occurs with Omicron spike, explaining the neutralized viral entry. This study reveals a unique epitope that can both enhance and neutralize viral entry across distinct viral variants, suggesting that epitopes may vary their roles depending on the viral context. Consequently, antibody therapies should be assessed across different viral variants to confirm their efficacy and safety.

Pollution integration and carbon reduction has become a primary focus in wastewater treatment processes. In this study, water quality and control indicators were used as input features and the dataset was extended using the moving average method. Random Forest, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine algorithms were used to predict the effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total energy consumption (TEC). The results indicated that the model prediction performance could be effectively improved when the data were amplified by two times and that the XGBoost model exhibited the best prediction performance for effluent COD and TEC. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II model was employed for the multi-objective optimization of effluent COD and TEC, resulting in reductions of 15% and 18%, respectively. The ensemble learning model proposed in this study to achieve synergy between water quality improvement and energy saving is practical.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by multi-drug resistant Gram-negative pathogens are associated with worse clinical outcomes in critically ill patients. We evaluated hospital outcomes based on adequacy of overall and newer antibacterial therapy for Enterobacterales (ENT) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PsA) in US patients. METHODS: Hospitalized adults ≥ 18 years old with facility-reported antibiotic susceptibility from 2018-2022 across 161 facilities in the BD Insights Research Database were identified as ENT- or PsA-positive. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate the impact of inadequate empiric therapy (IET) and time to initiate newer antibacterials (ceftazidime-avibactam; ceftolozane-tazobactam; cefiderocol; meropenem-vaborbactam; eravacycline; and imipenem-cilcastatin-relebactam) on hospital mortality and post-culture length of stay (LOS). RESULTS: Among 229,320 ENT and 36,027 PsA susceptibility results, 1.7% and 16.8% were carbapenem non-susceptible (carb-NS), respectively. Median time to first susceptibility result was longer for carb-NS vs. carb susceptible in ENT (64 h vs. 48 h) and PsA (67 h vs. 60 h). For ENT, IET was associated with significantly higher mortality (odds ratio [OR],1.29 [95% CI, 1.16-1.43, P < 0.0001]) and longer hospital LOS (14.8 vs. 13.3, P < 0.0001). Delayed start to newer antibacterial therapy was associated with significantly greater hospital mortality for ENT (P = 0.0182) and PsA (P = 0.0249) and significantly longer post-culture LOS for ENT (P < 0.0001) and PsA (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, IET and delayed use of newer antibacterials are associated with significantly worse hospital outcomes. More rapid identification of high-risk patients can facilitate adequate therapy and timely use of newer antibacterials developed for resistant Gram-negative pathogens.

Polymers are endocytosed and hydrolysed by lysosomal enzymes to generate transportable solutes. While the transport of diverse organic solutes across the plasma membrane is well studied, their necessary ongoing efflux from the endocytic fluid into the cytosol is poorly appreciated by comparison. Myeloid cells that employ specialized types of endocytosis, that is, phagocytosis and macropinocytosis, are highly dependent on such transport pathways to prevent the build-up of hydrostatic pressure that otherwise offsets lysosomal dynamics including vesiculation, tubulation and fission. Without undergoing rupture, we found that lysosomes incurring this pressure owing to defects in solute efflux, are unable to retain luminal Na+, which collapses its gradient with the cytosol. This cation 'leak' is mediated by pressure-sensitive channels resident to lysosomes and leads to the inhibition of mTORC1, which is normally activated by Na+-coupled amino acid transporters driven by the Na+ gradient. As a consequence, the transcription factors TFEB/TFE3 are made active in macrophages with distended lysosomes. In addition to their role in lysosomal biogenesis, TFEB/TFE3 activation causes the release of MCP-1/CCL2. In catabolically stressed tissues, defects in efflux of solutes from the endocytic pathway leads to increased monocyte recruitment. Here we propose that macrophages respond to a pressure-sensing pathway on lysosomes to orchestrate lysosomal biogenesis as well as myeloid cell recruitment.

Delayed time to antimicrobial susceptibility results can impact patients' outcomes. Our study evaluated the impact of susceptibility turnaround time (TAT) and inadequate empiric antibacterial therapy (IET) in patients with bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by Enterobacterales (ENT) species on in-hospital mortality and length of stay (LOS). This retrospective, multicenter investigation which included 29,570 blood ENT-positive admissions across 161 US healthcare facilities evaluated the association between antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) TAT, carbapenem susceptibility, and empiric therapy on post-BSI in-hospital mortality and LOS following an ENT BSI event in adult patients. After adjusting for outcomes covariates, post-BSI in-hospital mortality was significantly higher for patients in the IET vs adequate empiric therapy (AET) group [odds ratio (OR): 1.61 (95% CI: 1.32, 1.98); P < 0.0001], and when AST TAT was >63 h [OR:1.48 (95% CI: 1.16, 1.90); P = 0.0017]. Patients with carbapenem non-susceptible (carb-NS) ENT BSI had significantly higher LOS (16.6 days, 95% CI: 15.6, 17.8) compared to carbapenem susceptible (carb-S, 12.2 days, 95% CI: 11.8, 12.6), (P < 0.0001). Extended AST TAT was significantly associated with longer LOS for TAT of 57-65 h and >65 h (P = 0.005 and P< 0.0001, respectively) compared to TAT ≤42 h (reference). Inadequate empiric therapy (IET), carb-NS, and delayed AST TAT are significantly associated with adverse hospital outcomes in ENT BSI. Workflows that accelerate AST TAT for ENT BSIs and facilitate timely and adequate therapy may reduce post-BSI in-hospital mortality rate and LOS.IMPORTANCEFor patients diagnosed with bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by Enterobacterales (ENT), delayed time to antimicrobial susceptibility (AST) results can significantly impact in-hospital mortality and hospital length of stay. However, this relationship between time elapsed from blood culture collection to AST results has only been assessed, to date, in a limited number of publications. Our study focuses on this important gap using retrospective data from 29,570 blood ENT-positive admissions across 161 healthcare facilities in the US as we believe that a thorough understanding of the dynamic between AST turnaround time, adequacy of empiric therapy, post-BSI event mortality, and hospital length of stay will help guide effective clinical management and optimize outcomes of patients with ENT infections.

The animal origin of SARS-CoV-2 remains elusive, lacking a plausible evolutionary narrative that may account for its emergence. Its spike protein resembles certain segments of BANAL-236 and RaTG13, two bat coronaviruses considered possible progenitors of SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, its spike contains a furin motif, a common feature of rodent coronaviruses. To explore the possible involvement of rodents in the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 spike, we examined the crystal structures of the spike receptor-binding domains (RBDs) of BANAL-236 and RaTG13 each complexed with mouse receptor ACE2. Both RBDs have residues at positions 493 and 498 that align well with two virus-binding hotspots on mouse ACE2. Our biochemical evidence supports that both BANAL-236 and RaTG13 spikes can use mouse ACE2 as their entry receptor. These findings point to a scenario in which these bat coronaviruses may have coinfected rodents, leading to a recombination of their spike genes and a subsequent acquisition of a furin motif in rodents, culminating in the emergence of SARS-CoV-2.

Conjugated polymers with ethylene glycol-type side chains are commonly used as channel materials in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). To improve the performance of these materials, new chemical structures are often created through synthetic routines. Herein, we demonstrate that the OECT performance of these polymers can also be improved by changing their density-of-state (DOS) profile through solvent engineering. Depending on the solvent polarity, it solvates the backbone and side chains of the conjugated polymer differently, leading to differences in molecule orientation, π-stacking paracrystallinity, and film defects, such as grain boundaries and pinholes. This then results in a change in the DOS profile of the polymer. A more intense and narrow-width DOS distribution is usually observed in organic films with an "edge on" orientation and fewer film defects, while films with a "face on" orientation and apparent defects show a broadened DOS profile. The OECT devices that use the polymer film with a more intense and narrow-width DOS profile exhibit a better-normalized transconductance and figure-of-merit µC* than those with a broadened DOS profile (0.74 to 4.29 S cm-1 and 3.5 to 14.3 F cm-1 V-1 s-1). This study provides useful insights into how the DOS profile affects the mixed ionic-electronic conduction performance and presents a new avenue for improving n-type OECT materials.

Lymphocyte subsets are the most intuitive expression of the body's immune ability, and the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) also clearly reflect the degree of chronic inflammation activity. The purpose of this study is to investigate their predictive value of lymphocyte subsets and LMR to neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) efficacy in breast cancer patients. In this study, lymphocyte subsets and LMR were compared between breast cancer patients (n = 70) and benign breast tumor female populations (n = 48). Breast cancer patients were treated with NAT, and the chemotherapy response of the breast was evaluated using established criteria. The differences in lymphocyte subsets and LMR were also compared between pathological complete response (pCR) and non-pCR patients before and after NAT. Finally, data were analyzed using SPSS. The analytical results demonstrated that breast cancer patients showed significantly lower levels of CD3 + T cells, CD4 + T cells, CD4 + /CD8 + ratio, NK cells, and LMR compared to benign breast tumor women (P < 0.05). Among breast cancer patients, those who achieved pCR had higher levels of CD4 + T cells, NK cells, and LMR before NAT (P < 0.05). NAT increased CD4 + /CD8 + ratio and decreased CD8 + T cells in pCR patients (P < 0.05). Additionally, both pCR and non-pCR patients exhibited an increase in CD3 + T cells and CD4 + T cells after treatment, but the increase was significantly higher in pCR patients (P < 0.05). Conversely, both pCR and non-pCR patients experienced a decrease in LMR after treatment. However, this decrease was significantly lower in pCR patients (P < 0.05). These indicators demonstrated their predictive value for therapeutic efficacy. In conclusion, breast cancer patients experience tumor-related immunosuppression and high chronic inflammation response. But this phenomenon can be reversed to varying degrees by NAT. It has been found that lymphocyte subsets and LMR have good predictive value for pCR. Early studies have shown that the gut microbiota is a critical target during cadmium exposure. The prebiotic activity of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) plays an essential role in treating intestinal inflammation and damage. However, the exact intestinal barrier protection mechanism of EGCG against cadmium exposure remains unclear. In this experiment, four-week-old mice were exposed to cadmium (5 mg kg-1) for four weeks. Through 16 S rDNA analysis, we found that cadmium disrupted the gut microbiota and inhibited the indole metabolism pathway of tryptophan (TRP), which serves as the principal microbial production route for endogenous ligands to activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Additionally, cadmium downregulated the intestinal AhR signaling pathway and harmed the intestinal barrier function. Treatment with EGCG (20 mg kg-1) and the AhR agonist 6-Formylindolo[3,2-b] carbazole (FICZ) (1 µg/d) significantly activated the AhR pathway and alleviated intestinal barrier injury. Notably, EGCG partially restored the gut microbiota and upregulated the TRP-indole metabolism pathway to increase the level of indole-related AhR agonists. Our findings demonstrate that cadmium dysregulates common gut microbiota to disrupt TRP metabolism, impairing the AhR signaling pathway and intestinal barrier. EGCG reduces cadmium-induced intestinal functional impairment by intervening in the intestinal microbiota to metabolize AhR agonists. This study offers insights into the toxic mechanisms of environmental cadmium and a potential mechanism to protect the intestinal barrier with EGCG.

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are of great interest in low-power bioelectronics and neuromorphic computing, as they utilize organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) to transduce ionic signals into electrical signals. However, the poor environmental stability of OMIEC materials significantly restricts the practical application of OECTs. Therefore, the non-fused planar naphthalenediimide (NDI)-dialkoxybithiazole (2Tz) copolymers are fine-tuned through varying ethylene glycol (EG) side chain lengths from tri(ethylene glycol) to hexa(ethylene glycol) (namely P-XO, X = 3-6) to achieve OECTs with high-stability and low threshold voltage. As a result, the NDI-2Tz copolymers exhibit ambipolarity, rapid response (<10 ms), and ultra-high n-type stability. Notably, the P-6O copolymers display a threshold voltage as low as 0.27 V. They can operate in n-type mode in an aqueous solution for over 60 h, maintaining an on-off ratio of over 105. This work sheds light on the design of exceptional n-type/ambipolar materials for OECTs. It demonstrates the potential of incorporating these ambipolar polymers into water-operational integrated circuits for long-term biosensing systems and energy-efficient brain-inspired computing.

AIM: The impaired function of tubular mitochondria is critical in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) progression. RUNX3 is down-regulated in DKD models. We intend to explore the effects of RUNX3 on mitochondrial dysfunction and renal tubule injury in DKD and related mechanisms. METHODS: The development of diabetes models involved injecting mice with streptozotocin while treating HK-2 cells with high glucose (HG). By using immunohistochemical techniques, the renal localizations of RUNX3 were identified. Levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), mitochondrial membrane potential, and biochemical index were detected by appropriate kits. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was assessed with dihydroethidium and MitoSOX Red staining. Apoptosis was assessed by flow cytometry and TUNEL. RUNX3 ubiquitination was measured. RESULTS: RUNX3 was mainly present in renal tubules. Overexpressing RUNX3 increased Mfn2, Mfn1, ATP levels, and mitochondrial membrane potential, reduced Drp1 and ROS levels and cell apoptosis, as well as Cyt-C release into the cytoplasm. RUNX3 overexpression displayed a reduction in urinary albumin to creatinine ratio, Hemoglobin A1c, serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen. Overexpressing TLR4 attenuated the inhibitory effect of RUNX3 overexpression on mitochondrial dysfunction and cell apoptosis. HG promoted RUNX3 ubiquitination and SMURF2 expression. RUNX3 knockdown cancelled the inhibitory effect of SMURF2 on mitochondrial dysfunction and cell apoptosis. CONCLUSION: SMURF2 interference inhibits RUNX3 ubiquitination and TLR4/NF-κB signalling pathway, thereby alleviating renal tubule injury.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the relationship between fasting blood glucose (FBG) and suicide attempts (SA) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) was limited. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate whether FBG was independently related to SA in Chinese patients with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD after adjusting for other covariates. METHODS: The present study was a cross-sectional study. A total of 1718 participants (average age: 34.9 ± 12.4 years, 65.8% females) with FEDN MDD were involved in a hospital in China from September 2016 to December 2018. Multiple logistic regression analysis and smooth curve fitting were used to estimate the association between FBG and the risk of SA. The threshold effect was examined by the two-piecewise linear regression model. Interaction and stratified analyses were conducted according to sex, education, marital status, comorbid anxiety, and psychotic symptoms. RESULTS: The prevalence of SA in patients with FEDN MDD was 20.1%. The result of fully adjusted binary logistic regression showed FBG was positively associated with the risk of SA (odds ratio (OR) = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.13-2.32). Smoothing plots also revealed a nonlinear relationship between FBG and SA, with the inflection point of FBG being 5.34 mmol/l. The effect sizes and the confidence intervals on the left and right sides of the inflection point were 0.53 (0.32-0.88, P = 0.014) and 1.48 (1.04-2.10, P = 0.030), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A U-shaped relationship between FBG and SA in FEDN MDD patients was found, with the lowest risk of SA at a FBG of 5.34 mmol/l, indicating that both the lower and higher FBG levels may lead to an increased risk of SA.

Paeoniae Radix alba is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, immunomodulatory, cancer, and other diseases. In the current study, the yield of Paeoniae Radix alba polysaccharide (PRP) was significantly increased with optimal ultrasound-assisted extraction compared to hot water extraction. Further, an acidic polysaccharide (PRP-AP) was isolated from PRP after chromatographic separation and was characterized as a typical pectic polysaccharide with side chains of arabinogalactans types I and II. Moreover, it showed antioxidant effects on LPS-induced damage on IPEC-J2 cells determined by qRT-PCR and ELISA, including decreasing the pro-inflammatory factors' expressions and increasing the antioxidant enzymes activities, which was shown to be related to the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway modulated by PRP-AP. The metabolites change (such as itaconate, cholesterol sulfate, etc.) detected by untargeted metabolomic analysis in cells was also shown to be modulated by PRP-AP, and these metabolites were further utilized and protected cells damaged by LPS. These results revealed the cellular active mechanism of the macromolecular PRP-AP on protecting cells, and supported the hypothesis that PRP-AP has strong benefits as an alternative dietary supplement for the prevention of intestinal oxidative stress by modulating cellular metabolism.

Signal communication mechanisms within the human body rely on the transmission and modulation of action potentials. Replicating the interdependent functions of receptors, neurons and synapses with organic artificial neurons and biohybrid synapses is an essential first step towards merging neuromorphic circuits and biological systems, crucial for computing at the biological interface. However, most organic neuromorphic systems are based on simple circuits which exhibit limited adaptability to both external and internal biological cues, and are restricted to emulate only specific the functions of an individual neuron/synapse. Here, we present a modular neuromorphic system which combines organic spiking neurons and biohybrid synapses to replicate a neural pathway. The spiking neuron mimics the sensory coding function of afferent neurons from light stimuli, while the neuromodulatory activity of interneurons is emulated by neurotransmitters-mediated biohybrid synapses. Combining these functions, we create a modular connection between multiple neurons to establish a pre-processing retinal pathway primitive.
