RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease characterized by relapses and remissions, causing physical disability and affecting individuals psychosocially. In this study, we aimed to assess anxiety and depression levels, sleep, and quality of life in MS patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 66 participants, 30 healthy controls, and 36 patients diagnosed with MS. All participants were administered the Sociodemographic and Clinical Data Form, Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Instrument (MSQOL-54), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). RESULTS: The PSQI, EDSS, BDI, and BAI scores of MS patients were found to be significantly higher, while the MSQOL-54 score was considerably lower than the healthy control group (p<0.001). In the patient group, there was a positive correlation between PSQI score and BDI (r=0.599, p<0.001) and BAI (r=0.633, p<0.001), while there was a negative correlation between PSQI and MSQOL-54 (r=0.705, p<0.001) and the duration of MS diagnosis (r=-0.364, p=0.029). A positive correlation was found between the EDSS score and BDI (r=0.401, p=0.015) and the number of hospitalizations (r=0.566, p<0.001). There was a significant negative correlation observed between MSQOL-54 and BDI (r=-0.807, p<0.001) as well as BAI (r=-0.834, p<0.001). There is a significant positive relationship between BDI and BAI (r=0.828, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our research revealed that individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis exhibit elevated levels of anxiety and depression symptoms when compared to a healthy control group. Additionally, they tend to experience lower sleep quality and overall quality of life. The provision of necessary psychiatric interventions to these patients following their diagnosis can enable them to accept the disease and actively participate in treatment, thereby positively impacting their quality of life.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Recently, aesthetic rhinoplasty surgeries performed to change the external appearance have become increasingly common, especially among young people. This study examined the frequency of social appearance anxiety, self-esteem, and social media use in people with rhinoplasty surgeries for aesthetic concerns. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 76 people, including 27 healthy controls and 49 aesthetic rhinoplasty planned cases, were included in the study. All participants were administered the sociodemographic data form, Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BMSAS). RESULTS: The RSE score of the case group was significantly lower than the control group (p<0.001), and the SAAS (p=0.004) and BSMAS (p=0.005) scores were significantly higher. A significant negative correlation was observed between the RSE scale score, SAAS, and BMSAS. There was a significant positive relationship between SAAS and BSMAS. Cut-off values were determined using the ROC analysis. When the value of 1.41 was taken as the cut-off for RSE, 81.6% sensitivity and 74.1% specificity were found and were good predictors. When the value of 21 was taken as the cut-off for SAAS, 83.7% sensitivity and 51.9% specificity were found, and it was found to be a good predictor. When the value of 19 was taken as the cut-off for BSMAS, 42.9% sensitivity, and 88.9% specificity were found, and it was found to be a good predictor. CONCLUSIONS: People who undergo aesthetic rhinoplasty have high social appearance anxiety and self-esteem and frequent use of social media. More extensive sample studies are needed to examine the effects of this situation on rhinoplasty.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the local reactions and new bone formation of rat subcutaneous and bone tissue to different calcium silicate cements. METHODS: In this study, 80 rats were divided into five groups as control, BIOfactor MTA (BIO), NeoMTA Plus (NEO), MTA Repair Hp (REP), Biodentine (DENT) and then into two subgroups according to sacrification times (7, 30 days; n = 8). Polyethylene tubes filled with appropriate materials (test groups); empty tubes (control group) were implanted into the dorsum of each rat subcutaneously. For intraosseous implantation, materials were placed in the cavities created in tibia of rats. Subcutaneous tissue and tibia samples were stained with haematoxylin-eosin and subjected to histopathological analysis. A score (0-3) was used to grade inflammatory reaction and new bone formation. Data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Inflammatory reaction observed in subcutaneous and intraosseous tissues for 7 days decreased significantly in all groups over time (P < 0.05). It was determined that there was significant increase in new bone formation in REP, BIO, DENT groups over time (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Four contemporary bioceramic materials induced local inflammation and tissues changes shortly after subcutaneous implantation, which were reduced over time. In intraosseous implantation, all materials induced new bone formation over time. REGISTRATION NUMBER: ADJ-03-23-0134. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

RESUMO

Background/Aim: Oxidative stress is considered to have a significant role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as well as many other diseases. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to evaluate the antioxidant system status at pre- and post-operative period in newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) requiring operation. Materials and Methods: Fifty CHD patients participated in this research. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were studied in blood samples. RACHS-1 score, blood lactate levels, and hypoxic events were also recorded. Comparisons of antioxidant system parameters were conducted at pre- and post-operative periods and also between exitus and discharged groups. Results: GPx activity and TBARS levels were significantly higher in the pre-operative period than post-operative period though the other antioxidant enzymes were not altered. In pre-operative period, GPx activity was low in addition to rarer hypoxic events in the discharged group. Also, a negative correlation was found between SOD and GPx activities in pre-operative period. Conclusion: The results provide fundamental data showing the lowered GPx activity and TBARS levels considered as sensitive oxidative biomarkers after the operation. It was assumed that antioxidant system parameters might show changes after the operation, and GPx is prominent for resistance to hypoxic conditions. Post-operative reduction of GPx and TBARS levels is significant for evaluating the antioxidant system alterations after the operation. However, further investigations follow long-term duration for post-operative monitoring to estimate how antioxidant system status changes to improve the treatment of the health condition.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder (manic episode) is an essential psychiatric disorder with unknown etiology, in which inflammation is considered to play a role. Klotho and FGF-23 are known to be associated with inflammation. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the link between Klotho and FGF-23 levels and bipolar disorder. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 42 men with BD and 41 healthy controls were enrolled, followed up, and/or treated at the High-Security Forensic Psychiatry Clinic. Sociodemographic data form, Young Mania Rating Scale, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale were applied to all participants. RESULTS: Klotho and FGF-23 levels were significantly increased in patients with BD manic episodes. There was no correlation between Klotho and FGF-23 levels and clinical parameters. For Klotho and FGF-23, cutoff values of 69 and 1,646 yielded 67.4% sensitivity and 72.1% specificity and 81.4% sensitivity and 51.2% specificity, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Klotho and FGF-23 may play critical roles in the etiopathology of manic episodes and are potential candidate biomarkers for bipolar disorder. This relationship might contribute to the etiopathogenesis of the disease and determine its treatment. Anti-Klotho and anti-FGF-23 administration may be a future treatment for controlling the course of the disease.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Endometrial compaction (EC) is defined as the difference in endometrial thickness from the end of the follicular phase to the day of embryo transfer (ET). We aimed to determine the role of EC in predicting assisted reproductive technology (ART) success by conducting a meta-analysis of studies reporting the association between EC and clinical outcomes of ART. METHODS: MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched from the date of inception to May 19, 2023. The primary outcome was live birth rate (LBR) per ET. Secondary outcomes were live birth or ongoing pregnancy per ET, ongoing pregnancy per ET, clinical pregnancy per ET, and miscarriage per clinical pregnancy. RESULTS: Fifteen studies were included. When data from all studies reporting live birth were pooled, overall LBR rates were comparable in cycles showing EC or not [RR = 0.97, 95%CI = 0.92 to 1.02; 10 studies, 11,710 transfer cycles]. In a subgroup of studies that included euploid ET cycles, a similar LBR for patients with and without EC was noted [RR = 0.99, 95%CI = 0.86 to 1.13, 4 studies, 1172 cycles]. The miscarriage rate did not seem to be affected by the presence or absence of EC [RR = 1.06, 95%CI = 0.90 to 1.24; 12 studies]. CONCLUSION: The predictive value of EC in determining LBR is limited, and assessment of EC may no longer be necessary, given these findings. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42023410389.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of three different calcium silicate-based cements (CBCs) with two different bulk-fill composite resins (CRs). METHODS: Plexiglas moulds with a diameter of 4 mm and a thickness of 2 mm were prepared (n = 60). The Biodentine, NeoPutty and MTA Cem LC samples were randomly divided into two subgroups containing 10 samples each. Surfaces of samples were air dried and Single Bond universal adhesive was applied. Cylindrical plastic capsules of 4 mm height and 2 mm inner diameter belonging to Filtek Bulk-fill and EverX Posterior CRs were centred on coating material and polymerized for 20 s. After shear bond strength (SBS) testing, all samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to identify failure patterns. Three samples, one from each group, were prepared to evaluate chemical composition of CBCs and examined with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy for surface elemental analysis. RESULTS: The values obtained from the tests were evaluated as statistically significant (P < 0.05). After SBS testing, the difference between all CBCs was statistically significant in both CRs. CONCLUSION: According to the findings in this study, it was concluded that MTA Cem LC had highest SBS values in both CRs. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

RESUMO

Citrus plants are host to several plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs), which are microscopic organisms. Among PPNs, the citrus root nematode, T. semipenetrans (Cobb 1913) (Tylenchida: Tylenchulidae), causes significant damage to citrus plantations worldwide. Understanding citrus nematode populations, precise identification, host preference among citrus species, and damage threshold are crucial to control T. semipenetrans. The minutiae of citrus plant-nematode interactions, nematode density and molecular nematode identification are not well understood. In this study, nematode species and density in citrus orchards, host specialization, molecular and morphological characteristics of nematodes were assessed. Molecular and morphological methods, host-nematode interactions, host (citrus species) preference, damage economic threshold (ET), and economic injury level (EIL) were determined using laboratory methods and field sampling. Citrus plantations in different provinces in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated. Nematode species were identified molecularly and morphologically. ITS sequences revealed that samples were infected by citrus root nematode T. semipenetrans. The lowest nematode density was in C. reticulata in Mersin (53 2nd stage juveniles (J2s) 100 g-1 soil), while the highest density was from Hatay in C. sinensis (12173 J2s 100 g-1 soil). Highest citrus nematode population density was on roots of C. reticulata, followed by C. sinensis, C. limon, and C. paradisi. The citrus nematode is more common than was thought and population fluctuations change according to specific citrus species. Environmental conditions, host and ecological factors, such as temperature, soil pH, and soil nutrients, might influence nematode populations in citrus orchards. Investigating nematode density in diverse soil ecologies and the responses of different resistant/tolerant citrus species and cultivars to nematode populations is essential in future studies.

RESUMO

Background: In insulin resistance (IR), it is thought that pancreatic fat accumulation may decrease pancreatic volume, cause an impaired endocrine function, and simultaneously lead to an exocrine dysfunction before diabetes develops. Aim: The association between pancreatic exocrine function and insulin resistance (IR) was assessed in a population with insulin resistance. Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study that included 43 IR cases with no other comorbid diseases or pregnancy and 41 healthy controls. Fasting blood adiponectin, leptin, pancreatic amylase, lipase, and stool fecal elastase-1 (FE-1) were studied and compared in both groups. Results: The IR group consisted of 38 females (88.3%) and five males (11.6%), while the control group consisted of 31 females (75.6%) and ten males (24.3%). FE-1 levels were significantly lower in the IR group (P-value <0.01). Blood glucose, insulin, and HbA1c levels were significantly higher in the IR group than in the control (P-value of <0.01, <0.01, <0.01, respectively). Leptin levels were significantly higher in the IR group compared to the controls (P-value = 0.013). After dividing the whole group (n: 84) into two groups as FE-1 <200 µg/g (n: 61) and FE-1 ≥200 µg/g (n: 23), logistic regression analysis was performed; the significant predictor of low FE-1 was HOMA-IR (ODD ratio: 4.27, P-value <0.01, 95% confidence interval for ODD ratio: 1.95-9.30). Conclusion: This study showed that IR is associated with pancreatic exocrine dysfunction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the association between platelet indices and disease severity, and outcomes of the patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a secondary hospital. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 722 hospitalized patients who had positive rRT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 and/or typical findings of COVID-19 at chest computed tomography (CT) were enrolled in this study. Initial platelet count (PLT) and indices, including mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), MPV/PCT, MPV/PLT, PDW/PLT, PDW/PCT on admission and the third day of hospitalization, and their relationship with disease severity and outcomes were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 57.2±15.6 years (range: 16-94) and male/female ratio was 1.22. 81.9% of the patients had moderate and 11.8% had severe disease. 1.8% of the patients had thrombocytopenia at admission. The patients transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) had significantly lower baseline lymphocyte counts, PLT, PCT, and 3rd day lymphocyte counts when compared with the patients in wards. ICU patients also had higher baseline CRP, LDH, ferritin, MPV/PCT, MPV/PLT, PDW/PLT, PDW/PCT ratios, and 3rd day PDW, CRP, LDH, and ferritin levels than the patients in wards. Mortality was associated with lower baseline lymphocyte counts, PLT, PCT, 3rd day lymphocyte counts and PCT. Higher baseline CRP, LDH, ferritin, MPV/PCT, PDW/PLT, PDW/PCT and 3rd day CRP, LDH, ferritin, procalcitonin, PDW, MPV/PCT, PDW/PLT, and PDW/PCT ratios were also associated with poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Platelet count and ratios were significantly associated with mortality in patients with COVID-19.

RESUMO

Vitamin D (VD) levels and several variants in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene are associated with the occurrence of diseases of the bones and cartilage. The aim of this research was to study and compare the association of the BsmI variant in the VDR gene as well as VD levels in disc displacement with reduction (DDR) between patients and healthy controls. This was a case-control study, in which 104 patients of DDR and 102 healthy individuals were studied. The Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) was used to diagnose temporomandibular diseases. The VDR BsmI variant was investigated, after extraction of genomic DNA, by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), and the VD level in serum was measured. The serum VD level was significantly different between the patient and the control group (mean (SD) 13.20 (11.02) ng/mL versus 18.44 (10.03) ng/mL, respectively) (p=0.008). Serum VD assessment revealed that serious vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in the patients than the controls (50.96% versus 21.56%) (p=0.00001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the bb genotype and b allele carriers of VDR BsmI variant were significantly associated with increased risk of DDR (p=0.022 and p=0.01, respectively). VDR BsmI BB genotype was higher in the control group than the patient group (p=0.045). Genotype distributions for BsmI variant in the controls and the patients were confirmed using the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium equation. The BsmI variant of the VDR gene and VD deficiency play role in DDR aetiopathogenesis in a Turkish population. Vitamin D level and VDR BsmI variation may be effective in a possible genetic-based DC/TMD Axis III to be created in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: One of the important mechanisms that regulate the stress response of the body is hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. One of the structures activating this axis is amygdala. We have seen people around who react calmer and cooler to very stressful situations. Are people with smaller amygdala really calmer? Or, can we say that the bigger the amygdala, which is the trigger of the body's response to stress, the more a person panics? Aim of the study is to compare the saliva cortisol levels and amygdala volume. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study conducted with 63 male students. Magnetic resonance images of students were taken before their final exam to calculate amygdala volumes. Saliva samples of all students were taken two times to detect cortisol levels in saliva. First one was 20 days before the final exam and second one was on the exam day. We assumed that the students were stressful on exam day. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: No statistically significant correlation was found between saliva cortisol levels and amygdala volume in the study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a highly prevalent breathing disorder in sleep. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between OSAS and prolidase activity, the oxidative stress index (OSI), total antioxidative capacity (TAC), total oxidative capacity (TOC) and the carotid intima media thickness (CIMT). METHOD: : After night polysomnography, 74 people were diagnosed with OSAS and simple snoring. Plasma prolidase activities, TAC and TOC were measured in blood samples taken in the morning after the sleep study. The patients' bilateral common carotid arteries were scanned. RESULTS: In total, 56 patients were in OSAS group [13 subjects 23.2% mild, 19 subjects 33.9% moderate, 24 subjects 42.8% severe] and 18 in simple snoring control group. The mean Prolidase, TOC, TAC and OSI levels were 744.7 ± 156.8, 59.2 ± 19.2, 2.12 ± 0.41, 3.12 ± 1.03, in the mild OSAS group, 761.6 ± 114.4, 57.9 ± 18.3, 2.03 ± 0.37, 3.15 ± 0.8, in the moderate OSAS group, 754.08 ± 133.9, 51.15 ± 12.1, 1.97 ± 0.27, 2.8 ± 0.82, in the severe OSAS group, and 711.9 ± 139, 52.3 ± 15.1, 1.83 ± 0.32, 3.06 ± 0.92 in the control group, respectively. Mean CIMT measurements were 0.71(±0,13) in the OSAS group and 0.76(±0.07) in the control group. CONCLUSION: There was no difference between the control and OSAS groups in terms of the parameters studied. Further studies should be undertaken in order to clarify the relation.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate skeletal and nasal volume changes before and after surgery in surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) without pterygomaxillary separation and compare the dental changes by digital model analysis and radiographic analysis. SETTING AND SAMPLE: Population A total of 18 patients (10 females and 8 males) aged 15-33 years and with completed skeletal development, who were referred to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Dentistry Faculty, Istanbul University and who had SARPE indication were included in the study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Skeletal changes, lower nasal volume, transverse diameters of bony nasolacrimal duct and dental changes have been evaluated by using Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) before and 6 months after the surgery. CBCT data was determined by Mimics v.18.01. Dental changes have been also evaluated by digital model analysis program 'Shape Orthoanalyzer' and the data are compared with those obtained using CBCT. RESULTS: The results obtained from dental measurements made using CBCT and those obtained using scanning three-dimensional (3D) models were consistent with each other. CBCT demonstrated that lower anterior nasal volume and transverse diameters of bony nasolacrimal duct showed statistically significant increase before and after the surgery. CONCLUSIONS: According to the study findings, SARPE without pterygomaxillary separation was noted to be an effective procedure. Lower nasal volumes were increased and the maxilla expanded in the transverse direction in all patients. Dental evaluations that were performed in this digital model analysis also supported our findings in CBCT. Transverse diameters of the bony nasolacrimal duct were shortened at all patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between vitamin D and thyroid antibodies with thyroid benign-malign neoplasms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The vitamin D vitamin and thyroid antibodies of 179 patients who underwent thyroidectomy for thyroid nodule were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 44.97 ± 14.139. Vitamin D levels were 14.473 ± 4.9999 ng/ml in women and 19.584 ± 6.1981 ng/ml in men and the mean was 15.016 ± 5.3579 ng/ml. There was a significant relationship between sex and vitamin D level (P < 0, 05). Antithyroglobulin antibody (anti-TGB) had been detected in 95 patients and Antithyroid peroxidase antibody (anti TPO) in 58 patients. There was no significant relationship between vitamin D levels (P: 0, 65), anti-TPO positivity (P: 0, 86), and anti-TGB (P: 0, 12) with benign-malignant neoplasm of thyroid. There was no relationship between vitamin D and metastatic disease (P: 0, 30) as well. In addition, no association was found between malignancy and metastasis (P = 0.068, P = 0.14, P: 0, P = 0, respectively) with thyroid antibody positivity (anti TPO and/or anti TGB) in severe deficiency (<10 ng/ml) and deficiency (<20 ng/ml) of vitamin D. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency or thyroid autoantibodies did not have any significant effect on thyroid malignancies or metastatic disease separately or together.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) findings by comparing the locations of free air in the abdomen and imaging findings with the site of gastrointestinal perforation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-three patients with acute abdominal pain who visited the emergency department between January 2015 and October 2018 were included in the study. There were 59 male and 34 female patients with a mean age of 50.5 years. The site of perforation was based on surgical findings in all cases. RESULTS: Among specific air distributions, periportal free air and subphrenic free air were statistically significant in differentiating upper gastrointestinal tract perforation. Whereas free air in the minor pelvis, right lower quadrant free air, left lower quadrant free air, and air in the mesentery were statistically significant in differentiation of lower gastrointestinal tract perforation. CONCLUSION: Multidetector findings may help to predict the site of gastrointestinal perforation, which would change the treatment plan.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to define the morphological and morphometric development of the foetus heart obtained from the domestic cattle in the gestation period of 15-25 weeks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this purpose, a total of 30 hearts belonging to cattle foetuses (15 males, 15 females) were used. The ages of foetuses were calculated according to the forehead-to-tail length and examined in three different groups. After dissection; biometric, macroanatomic, morphometric and histological findings were obtained from the foetal hearts according to the groups. In addition, mean values of the morphometric findings were determined. RESULTS: As a result of the study, it was found that with the advancing age the convexity of margo ventricularis dexter increased and margo ventricularis sinister transformed from a convex-concave shape to a flat shape. The heart-to-body weight ratio was determined as 0.08% for Group II female foetuses and 0.09% for all other groups. The heart heights for Groups I, II, and III females were identified as 26.21, 41.00, and 46.27 mm, respectively, and for the males 26.45, 34.89, and 47.15 mm, respectively. In the statistical analysis, it was determined that all the morphometric values measured from the heart correlated significantly with the forehead-to-tail length. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained as a result of the study is thought to help understand the morphological and morphometrical development of the heart, pioneer the attempts to create a foetal cattle heart model, and thus help in the diagnosis of the foetal heart pathologies.acielecka.
