RESUMO

What we believe to be a novel reconfigurable multi-channel microwave photonic (MWP) receiver for multi-band RF signal is demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. A reconfigurable MWP signal processing chip based on two cascaded microring filter banks is employed in the proposed receiver, which slices the multi-band RF input into several narrow band signals and selects optical frequency comb lines for frequency converting of each channel. Due to the significant reconfigurability of the signal processing chip, the proposed receiver can flexibly choose the output frequency band of each channel, and thus different frequency components of the multi-band RF input can be down converted to the intermediate frequency (IF) band for receiving or converted to other frequency band for forwarding. A multi-band RF signal composed of a linear frequency modulation (LFM) signal with 2 GHz bandwidth and a quad-phase shift keyed (QPSK) signal with 100 Mbit/s rate is experimentally received and reconstructed by the proposed receiver, where the reconstructed LFM component exhibits a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 10.2 dB, and the reconstructed QPSK component reaches a high SNR of 26.1 dB and a great error vector magnitude (EVM) of 11.73%. On the other hand, the QPSK component of the multi-band RF signal centered at 13.5 GHz is successfully converted to 3.1 GHz.

RESUMO

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, rhinovirus (RV) remained notable persistence, maintaining its presence while other seasonal respiratory viruses were largely suppressed by pandemic restrictions during national lockdowns. This research explores the epidemiological dynamics of RV infections among pediatric populations on Hainan Island, China, specifically focusing on the impact before and after the zero-COVID policy was lifted. From January 2021 to December 2023, 19 680 samples were collected from pediatric patients hospitalized with acute lower respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) at the Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital. The infection of RV was detected by tNGS. RV species and subtypes were identified in 32 RV-positive samples representing diverse time points by analyzing the VP4/VP2 partial regions. Among the 19 680 pediatric inpatients with ARTIs analyzed, 21.55% were found to be positive for RV infection, with notable peaks observed in April 2021 and November 2022. A gradual annual decline in RV infections was observed, alongside a seasonal pattern of higher prevalence during the colder months. The highest proportion of RV infections was observed in the 0-1-year age group. Phylogenetic analysis on 32 samples indicated a trend from RV-A to RV-C in 2022. This observation suggests potential evolving dynamics within the RV species although further studies are needed due to the limited sample size. The research emphasizes the necessity for ongoing surveillance and targeted management, particularly for populations highly susceptible to severe illnesses caused by RV infections.

RESUMO

Constrained by a limited understanding of the structure and luminescence mechanisms of carbon dots (CDs), achieving precise enhancement of their photoluminescence (PL) performance without altering the emission wavelength and color remains a challenge. In this work, a deuterated CD is first achieved by simply replacing the reaction solvent from H2O to D2O. The substitution of D atoms for H atoms is not limited on the surface but also within the internal structure of CDs. Deuteration affects the formation of the π-conjugated network structure by altering the content of sp2 carbon and sp3 carbon, ultimately inducing a reconstruction for energy level structure of CDs. Both the intrinsic state and surface state emission, including quantum yield, emission intensity and lifetime, are significantly enhanced after deuteration. It benefits from the reduction in non-radiative transitions, since the lowered vibrational frequencies of D atoms and optimized local energy level distribution in CDs structure. The deuterated CDs are applied in the fabrication of white-light-emitting diodes to show their application potential. This work provides a highly versatile route for improving and controlling photoluminescence performance of CDs and has opportunities to guide the development of CDs for practical applications.

RESUMO

We report a dual-polarization radio frequency (RF) channelizer based on microcombs. Two high-Q micro-ring resonators (MRRs) with slightly different free spectral ranges (FSRs) are used: one MRR is pumped to yield soliton crystal microcombs ("active"), and the other MRR is used as a "passive" periodic optical filter supporting dual-polarization operation to slice the RF spectrum. With the tailored mismatch between the FSRs of the active and passive MRRs, wideband RF spectra can be channelized into multiple segments featuring digital-compatible bandwidths via the Vernier effect. Due to the use of dual-polarization states, the number of channelized spectral segments, and thus the RF instantaneous bandwidth (with a certain spectral resolution), can be doubled. In our experiments, we used 20 microcomb lines with ∼ 49 GHz FSR to achieve 20 channels for each polarization, with high RF spectra slicing resolutions at 144 MHz (TE) and 163 MHz (TM), respectively; achieving an instantaneous RF operation bandwidth of 3.1 GHz (TE) and 2.2 GHz (TM). Our approach paves the path towards monolithically integrated photonic RF receivers (the key components - active and passive MRRs are all fabricated on the same platform) with reduced complexity, size, and unprecedented performance, which is important for wide RF applications with digital-compatible signal detection.

RESUMO

Host survival depends on the elimination of virus and mitigation of tissue damage. Herein, we report the modulation of D-mannose flux rewires the virus-triggered immunometabolic response cascade and reduces tissue damage. Safe and inexpensive D-mannose can compete with glucose for the same transporter and hexokinase. Such competitions suppress glycolysis, reduce mitochondrial reactive-oxygen-species and succinate-mediated hypoxia-inducible factor-1α, and thus reduce virus-induced proinflammatory cytokine production. The combinatorial treatment by D-mannose and antiviral monotherapy exhibits in vivo synergy despite delayed antiviral treatment in mouse model of virus infections. Phosphomannose isomerase (PMI) knockout cells are viable, whereas addition of D-mannose to the PMI knockout cells blocks cell proliferation, indicating that PMI activity determines the beneficial effect of D-mannose. PMI inhibition suppress a panel of virus replication via affecting host and viral surface protein glycosylation. However, D-mannose does not suppress PMI activity or virus fitness. Taken together, PMI-centered therapeutic strategy clears virus infection while D-mannose treatment reprograms glycolysis for control of collateral damage.

RESUMO

Bats are important mammal reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens. However, due to research limitations involving species, locations, pathogens, or sample types, the full diversity of viruses in bats remains to be discovered. We used next-generation sequencing technology to characterize the mammalian virome and analyze the phylogenetic evolution and diversity of mammalian viruses carried by bats from Haikou City and Tunchang County in Hainan Province, China. We collected 200 pharyngeal swab and anal swab samples from Rhinolophus affinis, combining them into nine pools based on the sample type and collection location. We subjected the samples to next-generation sequencing and conducted bioinformatics analysis. All samples were screened via specific PCR and phylogenetic analysis. The diverse viral reads, closely related to mammals, were assigned into 17 viral families. We discovered many novel bat viruses and identified some closely related to known human/animal pathogens. In the current study, 6 complete genomes and 2 partial genomic sequences of 6 viral families and 8 viral genera have been amplified, among which 5 strains are suggested to be new virus species. These included coronavirus, pestivirus, bastrovirus, bocavirus, papillomavirus, parvovirus, and paramyxovirus. The primary finding is that a SADS-related CoV and a HoBi-like pestivirus identified in R. affinis in Hainan Province could be pathogenic to livestock. This study expands our understanding of bats as a virus reservoir, providing a basis for further research on the transmission of viruses from bats to humans.

RESUMO

Neuromorphic hardware equipped with associative learning capabilities presents fascinating applications in the next generation of artificial intelligence. However, research into synaptic devices exhibiting complex associative learning behaviors is still nascent. Here, an optoelectronic memristor based on Ag/TiO2 Nanowires: ZnO Quantum dots/FTO was proposed and constructed to emulate the biological associative learning behaviors. Effective implementation of synaptic behaviors, including long and short-term plasticity, and learning-forgetting-relearning behaviors, were achieved in the device through the application of light and electrical stimuli. Leveraging the optoelectronic co-modulated characteristics, a simulation of neuromorphic computing was conducted, resulting in a handwriting digit recognition accuracy of 88.9%. Furthermore, a 3 × 7 memristor array was constructed, confirming its application in artificial visual memory. Most importantly, complex biological associative learning behaviors were emulated by mapping the light and electrical stimuli into conditioned and unconditioned stimuli, respectively. After training through associative pairs, reflexes could be triggered solely using light stimuli. Comprehensively, under specific optoelectronic signal applications, the four features of classical conditioning, namely acquisition, extinction, recovery, and generalization, were elegantly emulated. This work provides an optoelectronic memristor with associative behavior capabilities, offering a pathway for advancing brain-machine interfaces, autonomous robots, and machine self-learning in the future.

RESUMO

Ticks act as vectors and hosts of numerous arboviruses. Examples of medically important arboviruses include the tick-borne encephalitis virus, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever, and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome. Recently, some novel arboviruses have been identified in blood specimens of patients with unexplained fever and a history of tick bites in Inner Mongolia. Consequently, tick-borne viruses are a major focus of infectious disease research. However, the spectrum of tick-borne viruses in subtropical areas of China has yet to be sufficiently characterized. In this study, we collected 855 ticks from canine and bovine hosts in four locations in Hainan Province. The ticks were combined into 18 pools according to genus and location. Viral RNA-sequence libraries were subjected to transcriptome sequencing analysis. Molecular clues from metagenomic analyses were used to classify sequence reads into virus species, genera, or families. The diverse viral reads closely associated with mammals were assigned to 12 viral families and important tick-borne viruses, such as Jingmen, Beiji nairovirus, and Colorado tick fever. Our virome and phylogenetic analyses of the arbovirus strains provide basic data for preventing and controlling human infectious diseases caused by tick-borne viruses in the subtropical areas of China.

RESUMO

Developing electronic skins (e-skins) that are comparable to or even beyond human tactile perception holds significant importance in advancing the process of intellectualization. In this context, a machine-learning-motivated micropyramid array bimodal (MAB) e-skin based on capacitive sensing is reported, which enables spatial mapping applications based on bimodal sensing (proximity and pressure) implemented via fringing and iontronic effects, such as contactless measurement of 3D objects and contact recognition of Braille letters. Benefiting from the iontronic effect and single-micropyramid structure, the MAB e-skin in pressure mode yields impressive features: a maximum sensitivity of 655.3 kPa-1 (below 0.5 kPa), a linear sensitivity of 327.9 kPa-1 (0.5-15 kPa), and an ultralow limit of detection of 0.2 Pa. With the assistance of multilayer perceptron and convolutional neural network, the MAB e-skin can accurately perceive 6 materials and 10 surface shapes based on the training and learning using the collected datasets from proximity and pressure modes, thus allowing it to achieve the precise perception of different objects within one proximity-pressure cycle. The development of this MAB e-skin opens a new avenue for robotic skin and the expansion of advanced applications.

RESUMO

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is a highly inherited neurodevelopmental disorder. Previous genetic research has linked ADHD to certain genes in the dopaminergic synaptic pathway. Nonetheless, research on this relationship has produced varying results across various populations. China is a multi-ethnic country with its own unique genetic characteristics. Therefore, such a population can provide useful information about the relationship between gene polymorphisms in dopaminergic synaptic pathways and ADHD. This study looked at the genetic profiles of 284 children in China's Xinjiang. In total, 142 ADHD children and 142 control subjects were enrolled. Following the extraction of DNA from oral mucosal cells, 13 SNPs for three candidate genes (SLC6A3, DRD2, and GRIN2B) in the dopaminergic synaptic pathway of ADHD were screened. Based on the results of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analyses, we found that the DRD2 gene variants rs6277 and rs6275, and the SLC6A3 gene variant rs2652511, were significantly associated with ADHD in boys and girls, respectively, after adjusting for false discovery rate (FDR) in terms of allele frequencies. Furthermore, our generalized multifactorial downscaling approach identified a significant association between rs6275 and rs1012586. These findings suggest that DRD2 and SLC6A3 genes have a crucial role in ADHD susceptibility. Additionally, we observed that the interaction between GRIN2B and DRD2 genes may contribute to the susceptibility of Chinese children with ADHD.

RESUMO

In this study, due to multiple cases of dengue fever in two locations in Haikou, Hainan, several factors affecting the transmission of dengue fever in Haikou in 2019 were analyzed. It was found that dengue fever spread from two sites: a construction site, which was an epidemic site in Haikou, and the university, where only four confirmed cases were reported. Comparative analysis revealed that the important factors affecting the spread of dengue fever in Haikou were environmental hygiene status, knowledge popularization of dengue fever, educational background, medical insurance coverage and free treatment policy knowledge and active response by the government.

RESUMO

Human herpes simplex virus (HSV), a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Herpesviridae family and alpha herpesvirus subfamily, is one of the most epidemic pathogens in the population. Cell-to-cell spread is a special intercellular transmission mechanism of HSV that indicates the virulence of this virus. Through numerous studies on mutant HSV strains, many viral and host proteins involved in this process have been identified; however, the mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the effect of the membrane protein genes US7 and UL56 on cell-to-cell spread in vitro between two HSV-1 (HB94 and HN19) strains using a plaque assay, syncytium formation assay, and the CRISPR/Cas9 technique. US7 knockout resulted in the inhibition of viral cell-to-cell spread; additionally, glycoprotein I (US7) of the HB94 strain was found to promote cell-to-cell spread compared to that of the HN19 strain. UL56 knockout did not affect plaque size and syncytium formation; however, the gene product of UL56 from the HN19 strain inhibited plaque formation and membrane infusion. This study presents preliminary evidence of the functions of US7 and UL56 in the cell-to-cell spread of HSV-1, which will provide important clues to reveal the mechanisms of cell-to-cell spread, and contributes to the clinical drugs development.

RESUMO

Recent developments in microwave photonic filters (MPFs) offer superior properties for radio frequency (RF) signal processing, such as large instantaneous bandwidth, high resolution and multifunctional shapes. However, it is quite challenging to realize two or more characteristics simultaneously to meet the diverse needs in complex electromagnetic environment. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable RF signal spectral processor with both large instantaneous bandwidth and high resolution. In the proposed spectral processor, sufficient taps supplied by an optical frequency comb (OFC) offer a large instantaneous bandwidth to process broadband RF signals. Flexible tap coefficients can be obtained by manipulating an optical spectral shaper (OSS), which provides excellent reconfigurability. This tap-by-tap manipulation is realized with a high resolution of hundreds of megahertz, allowing precise shape configuration of the response. In the experiment, we demonstrate a flat-top response with a wide bandwidth of 7.1 GHz. Reconfigurable features such as tunable bandwidth, adjustable center frequency and diverse shapes are also shown. In particular, the measured frequency resolution of 96.5 MHz demonstrates the ability for precise configuration.

RESUMO

In this paper, we propose a novel time-division multiplexed (TDM) array for a large-scale interferometric fiber-optic hydrophone system, in which we introduce a power-optimized reference probe and effectively reduce the additional white noise while correcting for light source frequency noise. Laser frequency noise usually introduces appreciable phase noise during demodulation of interferometric fiber-optic hydrophones. In the previous means, one would introduce an additional probe isolated from the environment in sensor array, and use it as a reference to calibrate the demodulation results of the other actual sensors. However, while correcting, the reference probe also introduces a large white noise. In our array, the echo of the reference probe is higher than the other sensors, thus solving this problem. The novel array design is applied to our previously proposed fiber-optic hydrophone based on a linear frequency modulated (LFM) light source. Experiments show that the deterioration of phase noise floor caused by additional white noise is improved from at least 3 dB originally to within 1 dB. This paper analyzes the factors that need to be concerned for the successful implementation of correction algorithms in hydrophone systems based on LFM sources. Particular focus is given to the impact of the power optimization of reference probe on the white noise and the corrected phase noise. Our proposal allows a significant relaxation of the demanding linewidth requirement for interferometric hydrophone. It is shown that laser with linewidth of 338.06 MHz can replace that with 1.417 kHz in our new system, while achieves the same demodulation noise floor.

RESUMO

Treatment at the early stage of onset is vital for the prognosis of rickettsioses. But the absence of specific clinical symptoms complicates the diagnosis of this condition. Herein we established a seminested recombinase polymerase amplification assay (snRPA-nfo) that enables quick detection and differentiation of rickettsial pathogens in clinical samples with high sensitivity and specificity. The conserved 17-kDa protein gene of Rickettsia sibirica and the 47-kDa protein gene of Orientia tsutsugamushi were targeted for the duplex RPA-nfo assay. The snRPA-nfo assay exhibited an increased LOD in spiked blood samples, up to 1000-fold in comparison to standard RPA-nfo, and a better detection rate (83.3%, 5/6) than TaqMan PCR (16.6%, 1/6, Ct ≤ 35) in clinically confirmed patient blood samples. Thus, snRPA-nfo assay represents a promising alternative to TaqMan PCR in the early diagnosis of rickettsioses for point-of-care testing as well as in resource-limited settings.

RESUMO

The risk of emerging infectious diseases (EID) is increasing globally. More than 60% of EIDs worldwide are caused by animal-borne pathogens. This study aimed to characterize the virome, analyze the phylogenetic evolution, and determine the diversity of rodent-borne viruses in Hainan Province, China. We collected 682 anal and throat samples from rodents, combined them into 28 pools according to their species and location, and processed them for next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. The diverse viral contigs closely related to mammals were assigned to 22 viral families. Molecular clues of the important rodent-borne viruses were further identified by polymerase chain reaction for phylogenetic analysis and annotation of genetic characteristics such as arenavirus, coronavirus, astrovirus, pestivirus, parvovirus, and papillomavirus. We identified pestivirus and bocavirus in Leopoldoms edwardsi from Huangjinjiaoling, and bocavirus in Rattus andamanensis from the national nature reserves of Bangxi with low amino acid identity to known pathogens are proposed as the novel species, and their rodent hosts have not been previously reported to carry these viruses. These results expand our knowledge of viral classification and host range and suggest that there are highly diverse, undiscovered viruses that have evolved independently in their unique wildlife hosts in inaccessible areas.

RESUMO

Introduction: Papillomaviruses (PVs) can cause hyperplasia in the skin and mucous membranes of humans, mammals, and non-mammalian animals, and are a significant risk factor for cervical and genital cancers. Methods: Using next-generation sequencing (NGS), we identified two novel strains of papillomavirus, PV-HMU-1 and PV-HMU-2, in swabs taken from belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) at Polar Ocean Parks in Qingdao and Dalian. Results: We amplified the complete genomes of both strains and screened ten belugas and one false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) for the late gene (L1) to determine the infection rate. In Qingdao, 50% of the two sampled belugas were infected with PV-HMU-1, while the false killer whale was negative. In Dalian, 71% of the eight sampled belugas were infected with PV-HMU-2. In their L1 genes, PV-HMU-1 and PV-HMU-2 showed 64.99 and 68.12% amino acid identity, respectively, with other members of Papillomaviridae. Phylogenetic analysis of combinatorial amino acid sequences revealed that PV-HMU-1 and PV-HMU-2 clustered with other known dolphin PVs but formed distinct branches. PVs carried by belugas were proposed as novel species under Firstpapillomavirinae. Conclusion: The discovery of these two novel PVs enhances our understanding of the genetic diversity of papillomaviruses and their impact on the beluga population.

RESUMO

Microwave photonic real-time Fourier transformation (RTFT) processing based on optical dispersion is a promising solution for microwave spectrum analysis. However, it usually brings the drawbacks of limited frequency resolution and large processing latency. Here, we demonstrate a low-latency microwave photonic RTFT processing based on bandwidth slicing and equivalent dispersion. The input RF signal is first divided into different channels with the help of bandwidth slicing technique, and then finely analyzed by the fiber-loop based frequency-to-time mapping. In the proof-of-concept experiment, a 0.44-m fiber-loop offers an equivalent dispersion as high as 6 × 105 ps/nm with a small transmission latency of 50 ns. As a result, we can realize a wide instantaneous bandwidth of 1.35 GHz, a high frequency resolution of approximately 20 MHz, and a high acquisition frame rate of approximately 450 MHz, together with a total latency of less than 200 ns.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present and experimentally demonstrate a digital-radio-over-fiber (D-RoF) architecture based on differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) and space division multiplexing (SDM). At low quantization resolution, DPCM can effectively reduce quantization noise and obtain significant signal-to-quantization noise ratio (SQNR) gain. We experimentally study the 7-core and 8-core multicore fiber transmission of 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (64QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals with a bandwidth of 100 MHz in a fiber-wireless hybrid transmission link. Compared to PCM-based D-RoF, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance in the DPCM-based D-RoF is effectively improved when the quantization bits (QBs) are 3-5 bits. In particular, when the QB is 3 bits, the EVM of the DPCM-based D-RoF is 6.5% and 7% lower than that of the PCM-based system in 7-core- and 8-core-multicore fiber-wireless hybrid transmission links, respectively.

RESUMO

Scrub typhus, caused by mite-borne Orientia tsutsugamushi (O. tsutsugamushi), is a major febrile disease in the Asia-Pacific region. The DNA load of O. tsutsugamushi in the blood was previously found to be significantly higher in patients with fatal disease than those with non-fatal disease and correlated with the duration of illness, presence of eschar, and hepatic enzyme levels. In this prospective observation study, we analyzed the association of bacterial DNA load with clinical features, disease severity, and genotype using real-time PCR targeting the 56 kDa TSA gene of O. tsutsugamushi in the blood samples of 117 surviving patients with scrub typhus who had not received appropriate antibiotic treatment. The median O. tsutsugamushi DNA load was 3.11×103 copies/mL (range, 44 to 3.3×106 copies/mL). The severity of patients was categorized as mild, moderate, and severe based on the number of dysfunctional organs, and no significant difference in O. tsutsugamushi DNA load was found among these groups. Patients infected with the Karp group showed a significantly higher O. tsutsugamushi DNA load than those in the Gilliam (P < 0.05) and TA763 (P < 0.01) groups. Patients belonging to the Li ethnic group showed a significantly higher DNA load than those in the Han ethnic groups. The blood bacterial DNA load of patients showed no significant difference between groups divided by gender, age, with or without eschar, or the season of disease onset. The highest body temperature recorded during fever onset was positively correlated with O. tsutsugamushi DNA load (ρ = 0.272, P = 0.022). Correlation analyses indicated that the serum total bilirubin level was positively correlated with O. tsutsugamushi DNA load. In conclusion, the findings in this study demonstrated the association of DNA load of O. tsutsugamushi with the severity and genotype in patients with scrub typhus in Hainan, China.
