Objective: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (AMN) is a rare obstructive dilatation of the appendix caused by an intraluminal accumulation of mucoid material, showing an insidious onset and few specific clinical manifestations. The purpose of the study is to analyze clinicopathological characteristics of primary AMN and recurrence after radical resection. Methods: A total of 50 patients were included in the retrospective cohort study of AMN. Patient data, such as demographics, tumor characteristics, surgical management, preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and carcinoembryonic antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) levels, were collected. All patients were followed-up with interval CT scans until the end of December 2021, with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) being calculated. Results: All patients were confirmed as AMN by pathological diagnosis after surgery, including 28 cases (56.00%) of low-grade AMN (LAMN) and 22 cases (44.00%) of non-LAMN. Among 50 patients with AMN, there were 12 cases (24.00%) complicated with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Higher proportions of patients with pTis, pT3, pT4a, ruptured at presentation, and PMP were found in patients with non-LAMN patients than LAMN (p < 0.05). There was a remarkable difference about preoperative serum CA19-9 levels between patients with LAMN and non-LAMN (p = 0.044). Patients complicated with PMP had a higher proportion of patients with ruptured at presentation than those who were not (p < 0.001). The patients with PMP had increased tumor size compared with those without PMP (p = 0.031). Remarkable differences were observed in terms of preoperative serum CA19-9 (p = 0.009) levels between patients with PMP and without PMP. We performed a multivariate analysis of the presence or absence of PMP and found that ruptured at presentation was found to be a risk factor for PMP in patients with AMN (p = 0.003). The PFS in the patients with PMP and those without was 33.33% (4/12) and 2.63% (1/38), showing a significant difference (P = 0.002). Conclusion: The study demonstrates that ruptured at presentation and PMP may influence the prognosis and survival of patients with AMN.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dehiscence and fenestration on external apical root resorption (EARR) in maxillary incisors. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients were selected for this study. We set dehiscence, fenestration, sex, extraction, or nonextraction, tooth position, initial age, and duration of treatment as independent variables and EARR as the dependent variable. General statistical descriptions for these variables were made by mean, standard deviation and occurrence rates, etc. To make the data visualization and find more information, 2 heat maps were made. Generalized estimation equation analysis was performed to determine associations between EARR and independent variables. RESULTS: The occurrence rates of dehiscence and fenestration in maxillary incisors were 14.77% and 10.74%, respectively. The average value of EARR was 1.09 ± 0.87 mm in this study. Dehiscence, tooth position, extraction, initial age, and duration had significant correlations with EARR. The ratio of exponent B was 1:1.643 for dehiscence and nondehiscence, whereas fenestration and sex had no significant association with EARR. CONCLUSIONS: The amount of EARR at maxillary incisors in patients with dehiscence before orthodontic treatment might be less than that in patients without it, and different incisors might have different contributions to it. However, the low value of exponent B for dehiscence meant that there might be other unknown factors that were involved in this study.

A bacterium strain, designated as CMF-2, was isolated from the jellyfish Cyanea capillata and its culture supernatant exhibited a significant antimicrobial activity. The strain CMF-2 was identified as Pseudomonas sp. based on the morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics as well as 16S rRNA sequence analysis. In this study, an antimicrobial protein, named as CAP-1, was isolated from the culture of CMF-2 through ammonium sulfate precipitation and gel filtration chromatography. According to the result of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), a major band indicated that the antimicrobial protein had a molecular mass of about 15 kDa, and it was identified as a hypothetical protein by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis and Mascot searching. CAP-1 displayed a broad antimicrobial spectrum against the indicator bacteria and fungus, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans, especially some marine-derived microorganisms such as Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholera, and Vibrio anguillarum, but showed little impact on tumor cells and normal human cells. The protein CAP-1 remained a stable antimicrobial activity in a wide range of temperature (20-80°C) and pH (2-10) conditions. These results suggested that CAP-1 might have a specific antimicrobial function not due to cytotoxicity.

Non-structural protein 9 (Nsp9), a RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), is necessary for PRRSV replication. However, the binding partners of Nsp9 have not been identified. In this study, seven host proteins were identified as Nsp9-binding proteins using yeast two-hybrid (Y2H). Among of them, we confirmed the interaction of Nsp9 with Annexin A2 (ANXA2) using Y2H, Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP), GST pulldown and immunofluorescence assay (IFA). We found that only full-length ANXA2 could bind with Nsp9 in vitro and Nsp9 interacted with endogenous ANXA2 in PRRSV-infected MARC-145 cells. In addition, we found that the Nsp9-ANXA2 interaction was partially reduced by RNase A treatment. Furthermore, PRRSV growth was significantly hindered in ANXA2-knockdown MARC-145 cells. Taken together, these results indicate that Nsp9 binding partner ANXA2 is beneficial for PRRSV replication.
