Alzheimer's disease (AD) is recognized as the leading cause of dementia, imposing a significant economic toll on society. Despite the emergence of novel therapeutic approaches for AD, their efficacy and safety mandates further validation through rigorous clinical trials. In this context, hypertension (HTN) has garnered considerable attention as an amendable risk factor for AD. Research indicates that hypertension during midlife is associated with an elevated risk of AD in later years, influencing both the onset and progression of the disease. Nevertheless, the relationship between AD and hypertension in the later stages of life remains a subject of debate. Moreover, the consequences of blood pressure reduction on cognitive function, along with the optimal pharmacological interventions and therapeutic thresholds for hypertension, have emerged as pivotal areas of inquiry. This review synthesizes findings on epidemiology, neuroimaging, and biomarkers, and the effects of antihypertensive medications to elucidate the link between hypertension and cognitive performance. We particularly investigate how hypertension and AD are related by plasma sulfide dysregulation, offering possible indicators for future diagnosis and therapy.

Herpes simplex virus-2 encephalitis (HSV2E) in immunocompetent adults is exceptionally rare, and the subsequent onset of autoimmune encephalitis after HSV2E is even less common. This report presents the inaugural Chinese case of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (NMDARE) induced by HSV2E, confirmed via metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). The patient demonstrated a favorable response to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) monotherapy. This case emphasizes the importance of considering autoimmune encephalitis in patients exhibiting new or recurrent neurological symptoms after HSV2E recovery. Comprehensive mNGS and neuronal antibody testing are essential for timely diagnosis. Moreover, IVIG monotherapy can serve as an effective treatment for NMDARE induced by HSV2, providing a viable alternative, particularly when steroid therapy is contraindicated.

Inflammation involves complex immune responses where cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6 promote vasodilation and increased vascular permeability to facilitate immune cell migration to inflammation sites. Persistent inflammation is linked to diseases like cancer, arthritis, and neurodegenerative disorders. Although oral anti-inflammatory drugs are favored for their non-invasiveness and cost-effectiveness, their efficacy is often compromised due to gastrointestinal degradation and limited bioavailability. Recent advancements highlight the potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) as nanocarriers that enhance drug delivery by encapsulating therapeutic agents, ensuring targeted release and reduced toxicity. These EVs, derived from dietary sources and cell cultures, exhibit excellent biocompatibility and stability, presenting a novel approach in anti-inflammatory therapies. This review discusses the classification and advantages of orally administered EVs (O-EVs), their mechanism of action, and their emerging role in treating inflammatory conditions, positioning them as promising vectors in the development of innovative anti-inflammatory drug delivery systems.

Background: Previous epidemiological studies have reported an association between Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and Parkinson's disease (PD); however, the causality and direction of this relationship remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the causal relationship between genetically determined SS and the risk of PD using bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods: Summary statistics for Sjögren's syndrome used as exposure were obtained from the FinnGen database, comprising 1,290 cases and 213,145 controls. The outcome dataset for PD was derived from the United Kingdom Biobank database, including 6,998 cases and 415,466 controls. Various MR methods, such as inverse variance weighted (IVW), Mendelian randomization Egger regression (MR-Egger), weighted median (WM), simple mode, weighted mode, MR-pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO), and robust adjusted profile score (RAPS), were employed to investigate the causal effects of SS on PD. Instrumental variable strength evaluation and sensitivity analyses were conducted to ensure the reliability of the results. In addition, reverse MR analysis was performed to examine the causal effects of PD on SS. Results: The WM, IVW, RAPS and MR-PRESSO methods demonstrated a significant association between genetically predicted SS and reduced risk of PD (odds ratio ORWM = 0.9988, ORIVW = 0.9987, ORRAPS = 0.9987, ORMR-PRESSO = 0.9987, respectively, P < 0.05). None of the MR analyses showed evidence of horizontal pleiotropy (P > 0.05) based on the MR-Egger and MR-PRESSO tests, and there was no statistical heterogeneity in the test results of the MR-Egger and IVW methods. The leave-one-out sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the causal relationship between SS and PD. Furthermore, reverse MR analysis did not support any causal effects of PD on SS. Conclusion: Our MR study supports a potential causal association between SS and a reduced risk of PD. Further extensive clinical investigations and comprehensive fundamental research are warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking SS and PD.

Designing highly active and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is critical for advancing anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). While dilute metal alloys have demonstrated substantial potential in enhancing alkaline HOR performance, there has been limited exploration in terms of rational design, controllable synthesis, and mechanism study. Herein, we developed a series of dilute Pd-Ni alloys, denoted as x% Pd-Ni, based on a trace-Pd decorated Ni-based coordination polymer through a facile low-temperature pyrolysis approach. The x% Pd-Ni alloys exhibit efficient electrocatalytic activity for HOR in alkaline media. Notably, the optimal 0.5% Pd-Ni catalyst demonstrates high intrinsic activity with an exchange current density of 0.055 mA cm-2, surpassing that of many other alkaline HOR catalysts. The mechanism study reveals that the strong synergy between Pd single atoms (SAs)/Pd dimer and Ni substrate can modulate the binding strength of proton (H)/hydroxyl (OH), thereby significantly reducing the activation energy barrier of a decisive reaction step. This work offers new insights into designing advanced dilute metal or single-atom-alloys (SAAs) for alkaline HOR and potentially other energy conversion processes.

Introduction: Baló's concentric sclerosis (BCS) is a rare type of central nervous system demyelinating disorder. Most patients with BCS are treated with corticosteroids, and spontaneous remission has seldom been described. Case presentation: A 46-year-old man presented with a subacute-onset headache and memory loss. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple onion-shaped ring lesions with mild enhancement in the outermost ring. A brain biopsy revealed significant myelin loss. The diagnosis of BCS was established based on the MRI results and pathological findings. Interestingly, the patient recovered almost completely without immunotherapy, with repeated brain MRI at the 1-year follow-up showing an obvious reduction in the extent of the lesions. Conclusion: Neurologists should improve the recognition of the typical MRI features of BCS to avoid unnecessary biopsies. Although rare, spontaneous remission can be observed in clinical practice.

Cadaverine is an endogenous metabolite produced by the gut microbiome with various activity in physiological and pathological conditions. However, whether cadaverine regulates pain or itch remains unclear. In this study, we first found that cadaverine may bind to histamine 4 receptor (H4R) with higher docking energy score using molecular docking simulations, suggesting cadaverine may act as an endogenous ligand for H4R. We subsequently found intradermal injection of cadaverine into the nape or cheek of mice induces a dose-dependent scratching response in mice, which was suppressed by a selective H4R antagonist JNJ-7777120, transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) antagonist capsazepine and PLC inhibitor U73122, but not H1R antagonist or TRPA1 antagonist or TRPV4 antagonist. Consistently, cadaverine-induced itch was abolished in Trpv1-/- but not Trpa1-/- mice. Pharmacological analysis indicated that mast cells and opioid receptors were also involved in cadaverine-induced itch in mice. scRNA-Seq data analysis showed that H4R and TRPV1 are mainly co-expressed on NP2, NP3 and PEP1 DRG neurons. Calcium imaging analysis showed that cadaverine perfusion enhanced calcium influx in the dissociated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, which was suppressed by JNJ-7777120 and capsazepine, as well as in the DRG neurons from Trpv1-/- mice. Patch-clamp recordings found that cadaverine perfusion significantly increased the excitability of small diameter DRG neurons, and JNJ-7777120 abolished this effect, indicating involvement of H4R. Together, these results provide evidences that cadaverine is a novel endogenous pruritogens, which activates H4R/TRPV1 signaling pathways in the primary sensory neurons.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disorder with varied clinical courses and prognoses, not only did the patients suffer from physical impairment, but also various physical and psychiatric comorbidities. Growing evidence have suggested that mental disorders in SLE patients, can lead to various adverse consequences. AIM: To explored the features and influencing factors of mental health in patients with SLE and clarifying the correlations between mental health and personality characteristics and perceived social support. The results would provide a basis for psychological intervention in patients with SLE. METHODS: The clinical data of 168 patients with SLE admitted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University between June 2020 and June 2022 were collected. Psychological assessment and correlation analysis were conducted using the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and Perceived Social Support Scale, and the collected data were compared with the national norms in China. The relevant factors influencing mental health were identified by statistical analysis. A general information questionnaire, the Revised Life Orientation Test, and Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey were employed to assess optimism level and quality of life (QoL), respectively. RESULTS: Patients with SLE obtained higher scores for the somatization, depression, anxiety, and phobic anxiety subscales than national norms (P < 0.05). A correlation was identified between total social support and total SCL-90 score or each subscale (P < 0.05). The factors significantly affecting patients' mental health were hormone dosage and disease activity index (DAI) (P < 0.05). The average optimism score of patients with SLE was 14.36 ± 4.42, and 30 cases were in the middle and lower levels. A positive correlation was found between optimism level and QoL scores. CONCLUSION: Patients with SLE develop psychological disorders at varying degrees, which are significantly influenced by hormone dosage and DAI. Patients' mental health should be closely monitored during clinical diagnosis and treatment and provided adequate support in establishing positive, healthy thinking and behavior patterns and improving their optimism level and QoL.

BACKGROUND: Since the end of 2022, Azvudine was widely used to treat hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in China. However, data on the real-world effectiveness of Azvudine against severe outcomes and post-COVID-19-conditions (PCC) among patients infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variants was limited. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Azvudine in hospitalized COVID-19 patients during a SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 dominance period. METHODS: From 1 November 2022 to 1 July 2023, an SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 dominant period, we conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study based on hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection from a tertiary hospital in Shihezi, China. Patients treated with Azvudine and usual care were propensity-score matched (PSM) at a 1:1 ratio to a control group in which patients received usual care only, with matching based on covariates such as sex, age, ethnicity, number of preexisting conditions, antibiotic use at admission, and baseline complete blood cell count. The primary outcomes were all-cause death and short-term (60 days) PCC post discharge. The secondary outcomes included the initiation of invasive mechanical ventilation and PCC at long-term post discharge (120 days). Cox proportional hazards (PH) regression models were employed to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) of Azvudine treatment for both all-cause death and invasive mechanical ventilation, and logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (OR) for short-term and long-term PCC. Subgroup analyses were performed based on a part of the matched covariates. RESULTS: A total of 2,639 hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection were initially identified, and 2,069 ineligible subjects were excluded from analyses. After matching, 297 Azvudine recipients and 297 matched controls were eligible for analyses. The incidence rate of all-cause death was relatively lower in the Azvudine group than in control group (0.007 per person, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.001, 0.024 vs 0.128, 95% CI: 0.092, 0.171), and the use of Azvudine was associated with a significantly lower risk of death (HR: 0.049, 95% CI: 0.012, 0.205). Subgroup analyses suggested protection of Azvudine against the risks of all-cause death among men, age over 65, patients without the preexisting conditions, and patients with antibiotics dispensed at admission. Statistical differences were not observed between the Azvudine group and the control group for the risks of invasive mechanical ventilation or short and long-term PCC. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that Azvudine was associated with lower risk of all-cause death among hospitalized patients with Omicron BA.5 infection in a real-world setting. Further investigation is needed to explore the effectiveness of Azvudine against the PCC after discharge.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing use of daratumumab (DARA)-containing regimens for multiple myeloma (MM) patients in China, the standard infusion time of DARA is long, with the potential for infusion-related reactions (IRRs) and increased hospitalization and use of resources. Shortening the duration of DARA infusion helps to optimize the hospital stay and enhance the patient treatment experience. The current, commonly used 90-min rapid DARA infusion regimen may not be applicable to Chinese MM patients, and therefore, we explored a new 110-min rapid DARA infusion regimen aimed at reducing the treatment burden on patients to guarantee therapeutic safety. METHODS: MM inpatients treated with the DARA regimen were divided into two groups according to the number of times the DARA regimen was used: a standard infusion regimen for patients treated with the first two doses of DARA and a 110-min rapid infusion regimen for patients treated with more than two doses of DARA. Anti-allergy medications were routinely administered prior to the start of DARA infusion, patient consent, and authorization was obtained for all treatments, and statistical evaluation of the results was conducted via descriptive analyses, one-way ANOVA and chi-square tests. RESULTS: A total of 129 patients were included in this study: 68 in the standard infusion group, with 121 DARA infusions, and 129 in the rapid infusion group (patients who participated in the standard infusion subsequently participated in the rapid infusion), with 738 DARA infusions. The incidence of IRRs was 27.27% (36/121) in the standard infusion group and 1.35% (10/738) in the rapid infusion group, which were significantly different (p < 0.001). The incidence of IRRs after rapid infusion in other studies was <6%. The incidence of grade 1 IRRs in the rapid infusion group was 0.81% (6/738), the incidence of grade 2 IRRs was 0.54% (4/738), and there were no IRRs above grade 3; age, sex, and underlying disease had no effect on the choice of infusion method (p > 0.05). The mean infusion time after the occurrence of IRRs was also shorter in the rapid infusion group than in the standard infusion group (F = 24.781, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The 110-min rapid infusion DARA regimen is feasible and safe for use in Chinese MM patients.

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a rare hereditary neurodegenerative disease caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme arylsulfatase A (ARSA). This study described the clinical and molecular characteristics of 24 Chinese children with MLD and investigated functional characterization of five novel ARSA variants. A retrospective analysis was performed in 24 patients diagnosed with MLD at Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center in South China. Five novel mutations were further characterized by transient expression studies. We recruited 17 late-infantile, 3 early-juvenile, 4 late-juvenile MLD patients. In late-infantile patients, motor developmental delay and gait disturbance were the most frequent symptoms at onset. In juvenile patients, cognitive regression and gait disturbance were the most frequent chief complaints. Overall, 25 different ARSA mutations were identified with 5 novel mutations.The most frequent alleles were p.W320* and p.G449Rfs. The mutation p.W320*, p.Q155=, p.P91L, p.G156D, p.H208Mfs*46 and p.G449Rfs may link to late-infantile type. The novel missense mutations were predicted damaging in silico. The bioinformatic structural analysis of the novel missense mutations showed that these amino acid replacements would cause severe impairment of protein structure and function. In vitro functional analysis of the six mutants, showing a low ARSA enzyme activity, clearly demonstrated their pathogenic nature. The mutation p.D413N linked to R alleles. In western blotting analysis of the ARSA protein, the examined mutations retained reduced amounts of ARSA protein compared to the wild type. This study expands the spectrum of genotype of MLD. It helps to the future studies of genotype-phenotype correlations to estimate prognosis and develop new therapeutic approach.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and affects millions of people. Accurate diagnosis and subsequent treatment in the early stages can slow down disease progression. However, making an accurate diagnosis of PD at an early stage is challenging. Previous studies have revealed that even for movement disorder specialists, it was difficult to differentiate patients with PD from healthy individuals until the average modified Hoehn-Yahr staging (mH&Y) reached 1.8. Recent researches have shown that dysarthria provides good indicators for computer-assisted diagnosis of patients with PD. However, few studies have focused on diagnosing patients with PD in the early stages, specifically those with mH&Y ≤ 1.5. Method: We used a machine learning algorithm to analyze voice features and developed diagnostic models for differentiating between healthy controls (HCs) and patients with PD, and for differentiating between HCs and patients with mild PD (mH&Y ≤ 1.5). The models were independently validated using separate datasets. Results: Our results demonstrate that, a remarkable diagnostic performance of the model in identifying patients with mild PD (mH&Y ≤ 1.5) and HCs, with area under the ROC curve 0.93 (95% CI: 0.851.00), accuracy 0.85, sensitivity 0.95, and specificity 0.75. Conclusion: The results of our study are helpful for screening PD in the early stages in the community and primary medical institutions where there is a lack of movement disorder specialists and special equipment.

Coagulation alterations manifest early after severe burns and are closely linked to mortality outcomes. Nevertheless, the precise characterization of coagulation changes associated with early mortality remains elusive. We examined alterations in indicators linked to mortality outcomes at both the transcriptomic and clinical characteristic levels. At the transcriptomic level, we pinpointed 28 differentially expressed coagulation-related genes (DECRGs) following burn injuries and endeavored to validate their causal relationships through Mendelian randomization. DECRGs tied to survival exhibit a significant association with neutrophil function, wherein the expression of CYP4F2 and P2RX1 serves as robust predictors of fatal outcomes. In terms of clinical indicators, early levels of D-dimer and alterations in serum calcium show a strong correlation with mortality outcomes. Coagulation depletion and fibrinolytic activation, stemming from the hyperactivation of coagulation pathways post-severe burns, are strongly linked to patient mortality. Monitoring these early coagulation markers with predictive value can effectively identify individuals necessitating priority critical care.

BACKGROUND: Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is an acute neurological syndrome resulting from thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. It has been recognized increasingly in non-alcoholic patients, such as in the condition of malnutrition. Recent literature has shed light on uncommon symptoms and neuroimaging findings. CASE REPORT: We reported a case of a 44-year-old male who initially presented with bilateral hearing loss, and exhibited abnormality in the splenium of the corpus callosum on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diffusion-weighted imaging sequence. On the following day the patient developed new symptoms, including unstable walking, double vision and hallucination. The subsequent brain MRI demonstrated lesions involving periaqueductal grey matter and bilateral medial thalamus, indicating the diagnosis of WE. Empirical treatment with intravenous thiamine resulted in complete clinical and radiological resolution. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, the current case is the first report of WE in literature with uncommon but reversible manifestations. This case warns us to maintain a heightened level of suspicion for WE in malnourished patients with neurological deficits, despite the possibility of atypical presentations encompassing bilateral hearing disturbances and unusual neuroradiological results. Early diagnosis and timely administration of thiamine in WE are likely to lead to a favorable outcome and full recovery.

BACKGROUND: Podocyte apoptosis plays a vital role in proteinuria pathogenesis in diabetic nephropathy (DN). The regulatory relationship between long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and podocyte apoptosis has recently become another research hot spot in the DN field. AIM: To investigate whether lncRNA protein-disulfide isomerase-associated 3 (Pdia3) could regulate podocyte apoptosis through miR-139-3p and revealed the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Using normal glucose or high glucose (HG)-cultured podocytes, the cellular functions and exact mechanisms underlying the regulatory effects of lncRNA Pdia3 on podocyte apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) were explored. LncRNA Pdia3 and miR-139-3p expression were measured through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Relative cell viability was detected through the cell counting kit-8 colorimetric assay. The podocyte apoptosis rate in each group was measured through flow cytometry. The interaction between lncRNA Pdia3 and miR-139-3p was examined through the dual luciferase reporter assay. Finally, western blotting was performed to detect the effect of lncRNA Pdia3 on podocyte apoptosis and ERS via miR-139-3p. RESULTS: The expression of lncRNA Pdia3 was significantly downregulated in HG-cultured podocytes. Next, lncRNA Pdia3 was involved in HG-induced podocyte apoptosis. Furthermore, the dual luciferase reporter assay confirmed the direct interaction between lncRNA Pdia3 and miR-139-3p. LncRNA Pdia3 overexpression attenuated podocyte apoptosis and ERS through miR-139-3p in HG-cultured podocytes. CONCLUSION: Taken together, this study demonstrated that lncRNA Pdia3 overexpression could attenuate HG-induced podocyte apoptosis and ERS by acting as a competing endogenous RNA of miR-139-3p, which might provide a potential therapeutic target for DN.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the clinical and genetic features of Chinese patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type VII (MPS VII), thereby improving early detection, disease management, and patient outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records for five patients presenting with coarse facial features, rib protrusion, chest deformities, and scoliosis was conducted. Exome sequencing was employed to identify causative genetic mutations. RESULTS: The study comprised five patients (four males, one female) with disease onset at six months of age (range: 0-1.5 years). Common symptoms included coarse facial features, skeletal abnormalities, delayed motor and language development, and intellectual disability. Approximately 80% of the patients exhibited multiple skeletal dysplasias, enlarged adenoids or tonsils, and snoring; 60% had hernias; 40% reported hearing loss and hepatosplenomegaly. Less frequent manifestations were short stature, valvular heart disease, non-immune hydrops fetalis, and corneal opacity. All patients demonstrated elevated urine glycosaminoglycans levels and absent ß-glucuronidase activity in leukocytes. Exome sequencing identified compound heterozygous mutations in the GUSB gene in all four tested patients, uncovering seven mutations in total, three of which were novel (c.189G > A, c.869C > T, and c.1745 T > C). Furthermore, prenatal diagnosis through chorionic villus sampling in subsequent pregnancies of one patient's mother revealed both fetuses had normal ß-glucuronidase activity and no disease-causing mutations in the GUSB gene. CONCLUSION: The study's patients all presented with classic symptoms of MPS VII due to ß-glucuronidase deficiency, with three new pathogenic mutations identified in the GUSB gene. Genetic counseling and prenatal testing were highlighted as crucial for disease prevention.

Drug delivery systems based on nanoparticles still face challenges of low efficacy and an inability to track treatment effects in tumor therapy due to biological barriers. This limitation hinders clinicians' ability to determine treatment effects and proper drug dosages, thus, ultimately impeding the further application and transformation of nanoplatforms. To address this challenge, an all-in-one nanoplatform for therapy and imaging is proposed. The nanoplatform is constructed by using nanoparticles through the co-encapsulation of the photothermal therapeutic agent IR780, the passively targeted drug OA@Fe3O4, and the chemotherapeutic drug paclitaxel. Under the guidance of magnetic navigation, the nanoparticles can enhance local enrichment of the drug, while the luminescence properties of IR780 enable drug tracking at the same time. Remarkably, the nanoparticles exhibit improved photothermal-chemotherapy synergy under magnetic targeting guidance, demonstrating antitumor effects in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. It is demonstrated that the use of these polymeric nanoparticles has significant potential for future biomedical applications and clinical decisions.

Using electrolytic zero-valent iron-activated sodium hypochlorite (EZVI-NaClO) to pretreat sludge, the capillary suction time (CST) was utilized to evaluate sludge dewaterability. Ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N), dissolved phosphorus, and total phosphorus in the supernatant were used to analyze sludge disintegration. This approach aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the pretreatment process and its impact on the sludge composition. The migration and transformation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), including dissolved EPS (S-EPS), loosely boundEPS, and tightly bound-EPS (TB-EPS), were analyzed by detecting protein and polysaccharide concentrations and three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission spectroscopy (3D-EEM). The sludge particle properties, including sludge viscosity and particle size, were also analyzed. The results suggested that the optimal pH value, NaClO dosage, current, and reaction time were 2, 100 mg/gDS (dry sludge), 0.2A, and 30 min, respectively, with a CST reduction of 43%. Protein and polysaccharide contents in TB-EPS were significantly reduced in the EZVI-NaClO group. Conversely, protein and polysaccharides contents in S-EPS increased, suggesting that EZVI-NaClO treatment could disrupt the EPS. Besides, the viscosity of the treated sludge decreased from 195.4 to 54.9 mPa·S, indicating that sludge fluidity became better. ZEVI-NaClO could enhance sludge dewaterability by destructing protein and polysaccharide structure and improving sludge hydrophobicity.
