RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate glymphatic function changes and their relationships with clinical features in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), thereby facilitating early intervention before this disease progresses to cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort of 46 pre-cirrhotic MAFLD patients and 30 age-, sex-, and education-matched controls was enrolled, with diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) data, laboratory and neurocognitive scores collected. The DTI analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index was computed for qualifying glymphatic function. Generalized linear model and partial correlation analyses were applied to evaluate relationships between the ALPS index and clinical variables. RESULTS: MAFLD group exhibited a decreased ALPS index and increased diffusivity along the y-axis in the projection fiber compared to the controls. The altered ALPS index was associated with clock drawing test (CDT) score (3.931 [0.914, 6.947], P = 0.011) and was correlated with diastolic pressure level (r = -0.315, P = 0.033) in MAFLD group. The relationships of ALPS index with CDT score (6.263 [2.069, 10.458], P = 0.003) and diastolic pressure level (r = -0.518, P = 0.014) remained in the MAFLD with metabolic syndrome (MetS) group. Furthermore, the ALPS index was even associated with Auditory Verbal Learning Test-Immediate recall score (-23.853 [-45.417, -2.289], P = 0.030) in MAFLD with MetS group. CONCLUSION: MAFLD patients may have a glymphatic dysfunction prior to cirrhosis, and this alteration may be related to cognition and diastolic pressure. Glymphatic dysfunction has a more severe impact on cognition when MAFLD patient is accompanied by MetS.

3',5'-cyclic uridine monophosphate (cUMP) and 3',5'-cyclic cytidine monophosphate (cCMP) have been established as bacterial second messengers in the phage defense system, named pyrimidine cyclase system for anti-phage resistance (Pycsar). This system consists of a pyrimidine cyclase and a cyclic pyrimidine receptor protein. However, the molecular mechanism underlying cyclic pyrimidine synthesis and recognition remains unclear. Herein, we determine the crystal structures of a uridylate cyclase and a cytidylate cyclase, revealing the conserved residues for cUMP and cCMP production, respectively. In addition, a distinct zinc-finger motif of the uridylate cyclase is identified to confer substantial resistance against phage infections. Furthermore, structural characterization of cUMP receptor protein PycTIR provides clear picture of specific cUMP recognition and identifies a conserved N-terminal extension that mediates PycTIR oligomerization and activation. Overall, our results contribute to the understanding of cyclic pyrimidine-mediated bacterial defense.

CoNiV medium entropy alloys (MEAs) have been widely recognized for their superior corrosion resistance. Nonetheless, their extensive application has been hindered by high production costs and complex fabrication processes. In this study, CoNiVAlx MEA coatings were synthesized on AISI 304 stainless steel substrates via laser cladding technology. The microstructure, phase composition, corrosion resistance, and corrosion mechanisms of the coatings were systematically investigated by using advanced characterization techniques, including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and electrochemical workstation analysis. The ratio of O2-/OH- in the passivation film of the coated surface exhibited a gradual increase with the addition of Al. The formation of the Al-containing precipitated phase L21 was observed at x = 0.3 and 0.4. The results demonstrated that moderate Al doping (x ≤ 0.2) enhanced corrosion resistance by improving the stability of the passivation film and reducing the thermodynamic tendency toward corrosion. In contrast, excessive Al doping (x > 0.2) led to the formation of the L21 phase, which increased the susceptibility to localized corrosion, thus compromising the overall corrosion resistance.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a significant cause of childhood stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) in children with MMD. METHODS: In a single-center pilot study, 46 MMD patients aged 4 to 14 years, with no history of reconstructive surgery, were randomly assigned to receive either RIC or sham RIC treatment twice daily for a year. The primary outcome measured was the cumulative incidence of major adverse cerebrovascular events (MACEs). Secondary outcomes included ischemic stroke, recurrent TIA, hemorrhagic stroke, revascularization rates, and clinical improvement assessed using the patient global impression of change (PGIC) scale during follow-up. RIC-related adverse events were also recorded, and cerebral hemodynamics were evaluated using transcranial Doppler. RESULTS: All 46 patients completed the final follow-up (23 each in the RIC and sham RIC groups). No severe adverse events associated with RIC were observed. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated a significant reduction in MACEs frequency after RIC treatment [log-rank test (Mantel-Cox), P = 0.021]. At 3-year follow-up, two (4.35%) patients had an ischemic stroke, four (8.70%) experienced TIAs, and two (4.35%) underwent revascularization as the qualifying MACEs. The clinical improvement rate in the RIC group was higher than the sham RIC group on the PGIC scale (65.2% vs. 26.1%, P < 0.01). No statistical difference in cerebral hemodynamics post-treatment was observed. CONCLUSIONS: RIC is a safe and effective adjunct therapy for asymptomatic children with MMD. This was largely due to the reduced incidence of ischemic cerebrovascular events.

Background/Objectives: Relapsed B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) remains an unresolved matter of concern regarding adverse outcomes. This case study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of blinatumomab, with or without door lymphocyte infusion (DLI), in treating measurable residual disease (MRD)-positive B-ALL. Methods: All patients who received blinatumomab salvage therapy were included in this study. Eleven patients were included in the study. All patients were evaluated for MRD-negativity. Results: Before starting blinatumomab therapy, seven patients tested positive for MRD, three tested negative, and one had refractory disease. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) was reserved for five patients with persistent MRD. Six patients became MRD-negative and subsequent HCT was not performed. Only two patients relapsed; one patient died of relapse, and the other one received carfilzomib-based therapy and was MRD-negative thereafter. Nine patients were MRD-negative at a median follow-up of 28 months (15-52 months). Two of three MRD-positive post-transplant patients remained in complete molecular remission after preemptive DLI at the last follow-up date. In the first salvage, blinatumomab may achieve complete remission and bridging to HCT in pediatric patients with end-of-induction MRD-positive B-cell precursor ALL. Conclusions: The decision on how to treat post-transplant relapse continues to affect survival outcomes. Blinatumomab combined with DLI may extend the armamentarium of release options for high-risk pediatric patients. This approach is encouraging for high-risk ALL patients who are MRD-positive post-transplantation.

Catalytic thermochemical conversion offers a sustainable method to upgrade oil-based feedstocks into highly valuable biofuel, aligning with the modern biorefinery concept. Herein, a series of IrRe/SAPO-11 catalysts with different Ir to Re molar ratios compared to reference Ir/SAPO-11 and Re/SAPO-11 catalysts was prepared using a wetness impregnation method. These catalysts were used for the direct production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) via efficient hydrodeoxygenation and hydroisomerization of triglycerides. The catalyst screening confirmed that the optimum IrRe/SAPO-11 catalyst, with an equivalent Ir to Re molar ratio, exhibited the highest hydrodeoxygenation activity under milder operation conditions than the conditions used in previous studies. Increasing the reaction temperature up to 330 °C enhanced the formation of iso-alkanes in the liquid product, achieving a freezing point of -31.4 °C without additional cold flow improvers. Furthermore, a long-term stability experiment demonstrated that the developed Ir-Re system exhibited exceptional performance over 150 h. This excellent catalytic activity and stability of the bifunctional IrRe/SAPO-11 catalyst was owing to its suitable interface between metallic and oxide sites, mixed mesoporous structures, reduced catalyst size, and increased Lewis acid ratio, as confirmed by our comprehensive characterizations.

Gliding is a crucial phase in swimming, yet the understanding of fluid force and flow fields during gliding remains incomplete. This study analyzes gliding through Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations. Specifically, a numerical model based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method for flow-object interactions is established. Fluid motion is governed by continuity, Navier-Stokes, state, and displacement equations. Modified dynamic boundary particles are used to implement solid boundaries, and steady and uniform flows are generated with inflow and outflow conditions. The reliability of the SPH model is validated by replicating a documented laboratory experiment on a circular cylinder advancing steadily beneath a free surface. Reasonable agreement is observed between the numerical and experimental drag force and lift force. After the validation, the SPH model is employed to analyze the passive drag, vertical force, and pitching moment acting on a streamlined gliding 2D swimmer model as well as the surrounding velocity and vorticity fields, spanning gliding velocities from 1 m/s to 2.5 m/s, submergence depths from 0.2 m to 1 m, and attack angles from -10° to 10°. The results indicate that with the increasing gliding velocity, passive drag and pitching moment increase whereas vertical force decreases. The wake flow and free surface demonstrate signs of instability. Conversely, as the submergence depth increases, there is a decrease in passive drag and pitching moment, accompanied by an increase in vertical force. The undulation of the free surface and its interference in flow fields diminish. With the increase in the attack angle, passive drag and vertical force decrease whereas pitching moment increases, along with the alteration in wake direction and the increasing complexity of the free surface. These outcomes offer valuable insights into gliding dynamics, furnishing swimmers with a scientific basis for selecting appropriate submergence depth and attack angle.

BACKGROUND: The prognosis for patients with esophageal cancer who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) followed by surgery has shown improvement in recent years. We sought to identify the critical factors contributing to enhanced survival outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively examined 427 patients with esophageal cancer treated with nCRT and esophagectomy across two periods: P1 (from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2011) and P2 (from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2017). The introduction of the CROSS regimen and total meso-esophagectomy in P2 prompted an evaluation of their effects on perioperative outcomes and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: During P2, the occurrence of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy increased significantly from 3.9 to 16.8% (p < 0.001), while pneumonia and in-hospital mortality rates remained unchanged. The median OS improved from 19.2 to 29.2 months (p < 0.001) between P1 and P2. Multivariable analysis identified higher nodal yields and the achievement of major response as favorable prognostic factors. Conversely, an involved circumferential resection margin (CRM), an advanced ypN stage, and pneumonia were independently associated with poor outcomes. Patients treated during P2 had a lower prevalence of involved CRM (10% vs. 25.1%, p < 0.001), a higher rate of major response (52.7% vs. 34.8%, p < 0.01), and a greater nodal yield (27.8 vs. 10.9, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical outcomes following nCRT and surgery have improved significantly over time. This progress can be attributed to multiple factors, with the primary drivers being the refinement of nCRT protocols and the application of radical surgery.

Angiogenesis is a key process for the proliferation and metastatic spread of cancer cells. Anti-angiogenic peptides (AAPs), with the capability of inhibiting angiogenesis, are promising candidates in cancer treatment. We propose AAPL, a sequence-based predictor to identify AAPs with machine learning models of improved prediction accuracy. Each peptide sequence was transformed to a vector of 4335 numeric values according to 58 different feature types, followed by a heuristic algorithm for feature selection. Next, the hyperparameters of six machine learning models were optimized with respect to the feature subset. We considered two datasets, one with entire peptide sequences and the other with 15 amino acids from peptide N-termini. AAPL achieved Matthew's correlation coefficients of 0.671 and 0.756 for independent tests based on the two datasets, respectively, outperforming existing predictors by a range of 5.3% to 24.6%. Further analyses show that AAPL yields higher prediction accuracy for peptides with more hydrophobic residues, and fewer hydrophilic and charged residues. Methamphetamine (Meth) is a potent psychostimulant with well-established hepatotoxicity. Gut microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) have been reported to yield beneficial effects on the liver. In this study, we aim to further reveal the mechanisms of Meth-induced hepatic injuries and investigate the potential protective effects of SCFAs. Herein, mice were intraperitoneally injected with 15 mg/kg Meth to induce hepatic injuries. The composition of fecal microbiota and SCFAs was profiled using 16 S rRNA sequencing and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis, respectively. Subsequently, SCFAs supplementation was performed to evaluate the protective effects against hepatic injuries. Additionally, Sigma-1 receptor knockout (S1R-/-) mice and fluvoxamine (Flu), an agonist of S1R, were introduced to investigate the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of SCFAs. Our results showed that Meth activated S1R and induced hepatic autophagy, inflammation, and oxidative stress by stimulating the MAPK/ERK pathway. Meanwhile, Meth disrupted SCFAs product-related microbiota, leading to a reduction in fecal SCFAs (especially Acetic acid and Propanoic acid). Accompanied by the optimization of gut microbiota, SCFAs supplementation normalized S1R expression and ameliorated Meth-induced hepatic injuries by repressing the MAPK/ERK pathway. Effectively, S1R knockout repressed Meth-induced activation of the MAPK/ERK pathway and further ameliorated hepatic injuries. Finally, the overexpression of S1R stimulated the MAPK/ERK pathway and yielded comparable adverse phenotypes to Meth administration. These findings suggest that Meth-induced hepatic injuries relied on the activation of S1R, which could be alleviated by SCFAs supplementation. Our study confirms the crucial role of S1R in Meth-induced hepatic injuries for the first time and provides a potential preemptive therapy.

It remains to be determined whether there is a geographical distribution pattern and phylogenetic signals for the Mycena strains with seed germination of the orchid plant Gastrodia elata. This study analyzed the community composition and phylogenetics of 72 Mycena strains associated with G. elata varieties (G. elata. f. glauca and G. elata. f. viridis) using multiple gene fragments (ITS+nLSU+SSU). We found that (1) these diverse Mycena phylogenetically belong to the Basidiospore amyloid group. (2) There is a phylogenetic signal of Mycena for germination of G. elata. Those strains phylogenetically close to M. abramsii, M. polygramma, and an unclassified Mycena had significantly higher germination rates than those to M. citrinomarginata. (3) The Mycena distribution depends on geographic site and G. elata variety. Both unclassified Mycena group 1 and the M. abramsii group were dominant for the two varieties of G. elata; in contrast, the M. citrinomarginata group was dominant in G. elata f. glauca but absent in G. elata f. viridis. Our results indicate that the community composition of numerous Mycena resources in the Zhaotong area varies by geographical location and G. elata variety. Importantly, our results also indicate that Mycena's phylogenetic status is correlated with its germination rate.

BACKGROUNDS: There is little evidence on the safety, efficacy, and survival benefit of restarting immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in patients with cancer after discontinuation due to immune-related adverse events (irAEs) or progressive disease (PD). Here, we performed a meta-analysis to elucidate the possible benefits of ICI rechallenge in patients with cancer. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. The objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and incidence of irAEs were the outcomes of interest. RESULTS: Thirty-six studies involving 2026 patients were analyzed. ICI rechallenge was associated with a lower incidence of all-grade (OR, 0.05; 95%CI, 0.02-0.13, P < .05) and high-grade irAEs (OR, 0.37; 95%CI, 0.21-0.64, P < .05) when compared with initial ICI treatment. Though no significant difference was observed between rechallenge and initial treatment regarding ORR (OR, 0.69; 95%CI, 0.39-1.20, P = .29) and DCR (OR, 0.85; 95%CI, 0.51-1.40, P = 0.52), patients receiving rechallenge had improved PFS (HR, 0.56; 95%CI, 0.43-0.73, P < .05) and OS (HR, 0.55; 95%CI, 0.43-0.72, P < .05) than those who discontinued ICI therapy permanently. Subgroup analysis revealed that for patients who stopped initial ICI treatment because of irAEs, rechallenge showed similar safety and efficacy with initial treatment, while for patients who discontinued ICI treatment due to PD, rechallenge caused a significant increase in the incidence of high-grade irAEs (OR, 4.97; 95%CI, 1.98-12.5, P < .05) and a decrease in ORR (OR, 0.48; 95%CI, 0.24-0.95, P < .05). CONCLUSION: ICI rechallenge is generally an active and feasible strategy that is associated with relative safety, similar efficacy, and improved survival outcomes. Rechallenge should be considered individually with circumspection, and randomized controlled trials are required to confirm these findings.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether flow fluid shear stress (FFSS)-mediated signal transduction affects the function of Piezo1 ion channel in chondrocyte and to further explore the role of mechanical overloading in development of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA). METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression of Piezo1 in TMJ OA tissue collected from rat unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) models. Chondrocytes harvested from normal adult SD rats were treated with FFSS (0, 4, 8, 12 dyn/cm2) in vitro. Immunofluorescent staining, real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, flow cytometry and phalloidin assay were performed to detect the changes of cellular morphology as well as the expression of Piezo1 and certain pro-inflammatory and degradative factors in chondrocyte. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that significantly increased Piezo1 expression was associated with UAC stimulation (p < .05). As applied FFSS escalated (4, 8 and 12 dyn/cm2), the expression levels of Piezo1, ADAMTS-5, MMP-13 and Col-X gradually increased, compared with the non-FFSS group (p < .05). Administering Piezo1 ion channel inhibitor to chondrocytes beforehand, it was observed that expression of ADAMTS-5, MMP-13 and Col-X was substantially decreased following FFSS treatment (p < .05) and the effect of cytoskeletal thinning was counteracted. The activated Piezo1 ion channel enhanced intracellular Ca2+ excess in chondrocytes during abnormal mechanical stimulation and the increased intracellular Ca2+ thinned the cytoskeleton of F-actin. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical overloading activates Piezo1 ion channel to promote pro-inflammation and degradation and to increase Ca2+ concentration in chondrocyte, which may eventually result in TMJ OA.

Background: Previous research has suggested that dyslipidemia may be a risk factor for rotator cuff syndrome (RCS), and lipid-lowering drugs may aid in its treatment, though conclusions have not been definitive. Mendelian randomization is a statistical method that explores the causal relationships between exposure factors and diseases. It overcomes the confounding issues inherent in traditional observational studies, thereby providing more reliable causal inferences. We employed this method to investigate whether hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for rotator cuff syndrome and whether lipid-lowering drugs can effectively treat this condition. Methods: Genetic variations linked to lipid traits low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) were acquired from the UK Biobank and the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium (GLGC). Data on genetic variation in rotator cuff syndrome were obtained from FinnGen, including 24,061 patients and 275,212 controls. In the next step, we carried out two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses to determine whether lipid traits correlate with rotator cuff syndrome risk. Additionally, we performed drug-target Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses on 10 drug targets related to rotator cuff syndrome. For the drug targets that showed significant results, further analysis was done using Summary-data-based Mendelian Randomization (SMR) and colocalization techniques. We performed a mediation analysis to identify potential mediators between HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) and RCS. Results: No causative link was established between these lipid traits and rotator cuff syndrome. However, a significant association has been identified where HMGCR inhibition corresponds to a reduced risk of rotator cuff disease (OR = 0.68, [95% CI, 0.56-0.83], p = 1.510 × 10-4). Additionally, enhanced expression of HMGCR in muscle tissues is also linked to a decreased risk of rotator cuff syndrome (OR = 0.88, [95% CI, 0.76-0.99], p = 0.03). Body mass index (BMI) mediated 22.97% of the total effect of HMGCR on RCS. Conclusion: This study does not support low-density LDL-C, TG, and TC as risk factors for rotator cuff syndrome. HMGCR represents a potential pharmaceutical target for preventing and treating rotator cuff syndrome. The protective action of statins on the rotator cuff syndrome might not be associated with their lipid-lowering properties.

OBJECTIVES: The long-term risk of developing glaucoma after vitrectomy remains uncertain. This retrospective population-based cohort study aimed to explore this risk following vitrectomy for macular pucker or hole. METHODS: Utilizing Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we included patients who were older than 18 years and had undergone vitrectomy surgery between 2011 and 2019. Exclusions were made for patients with prior diagnoses of glaucoma, congenital or secondary glaucoma, as well as those who had received previous vitreoretinal treatments or had undergone multiple vitrectomies. RESULTS: After an average follow-up period of 51 and 53 months respectively for the vitrectomized and non-vitrectomized group, our results showed a relative risk of 1.71 for glaucoma development in the vitrectomized group. Higher adjusted hazard ratios were also observed for open-angle glaucoma and normal tension glaucoma. Increased risks were associated with male sex, obstructive sleep apnoea, and migraine. In the subgroup analysis, phakic eyes at baseline and those who had undergone cataract surgery post-vitrectomy were associated with a lower risk of glaucoma development during follow-up. Among all glaucoma events, pseudophakic status at baseline had the shortest interval to glaucoma development following vitrectomy. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the potential relationship between vitrectomy and glaucoma onset, emphasizing the need for vigilant monitoring and early detection of glaucoma in post-vitrectomy patients.

PURPOSE: To compare changes in corneal endothelial parameters following femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and conventional phacoemulsification (CPS) in different corneal regions. SETTING: Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou, Taiwan, 2018- 2022. DESIGN: Single-center, retrospective. METHODS: Before and 1, 3, and 6 months post-op, specular microscopy was performed to measure endothelial cell density (ECD), corneal thickness, hexagonal cell rate (Hex), and coefficient of variation (CoV). Position 1 referred to the central cornea, Position 2 was nearest to the main wound, and Position 3 was at the peripheral zone diagonal to the main wound. RESULTS: This study analyzed 96 eyes in the FLACS group and 110 eyes in the CPS group. Preoperatively, Position 1 had lower ECD and CoV and higher Hex compared to the peripheral regions. FLACS patients had a significantly less phaco time and cumulative dissipated energy. At one month, FLACS patients showed a significantly smaller increase in corneal thickness at Positions 1 and 2. At 3 months, FLACS patients had lower endothelial cell loss (ECL) at Positions 1 and 3. ECL remained lower in FLACS patients at 6 months. The highest ECL was observed at Position 2 in both groups and was progressive up to 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Following phacoemulcification, ECL varied in different corneal regions. At 3 months, the FLACS group exhibited significantly less ECL at the central cornea; however, the continued ECL at 6 months near the main wound suggested ongoing endothelial remodeling in the region.

Background: Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is still a predominant cause of hepatectomy-related mortality. However, it is difficult to evaluate the remnant liver functional reserve accurately before surgery to prevent PHLF. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of gadoxetate disodium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in evaluating remnant liver functional reserve. Methods: For this cross-sectional study, the sample retrospectively included 56 patients undergoing liver resections of at least three segments between June 2019 and September 2022 at The General Hospital of the Western Theater Command. Pre-surgery assessments involved liver computer tomography (CT), an indocyanine green (ICG) clearance test, the Child-Pugh scoring system, and liver function serum biochemical indicators. Each patient underwent a gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MRI before the hepatectomy, and we measured the remnant hepatocellular uptake index (rHUI) as well as the standard remnant hepatocellular uptake index (SrHUI). We examined the diagnostic utility of rHUI, SrHUI, indocyanine green retention rate of 15 minutes (ICG R15), and Albumin for PHLF. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses were used to measure the preoperative liver function parameters (namely, rHUI, SrHUI, ICG R15, and Albumin) for predicting PHLF. The areas under the curve (AUCs) were calculated and compared between different preoperative liver function parameters using the Wilson/Brown method. The Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient was used for correlation analysis between ICG R15, Albumin, and rHUI and between ICG R15, Albumin, and SrHUI, respectively. Results: Twelve patients (21.43%) had complications of PHLF. We found significant differences in rHUI, SrHUI, ICG R15, and Albumin between the non-PHLF and PHLF groups. The pooled r between ICG R15 and rHUI was -0.591 [95% confidence interval (CI): -0.740 to -0.389, P<0.001], and between ICG R15 and SrHUI was -0.534 (95% CI: -0.703 to -0.308, P<0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) values of rHUI, SrHUI, ICG R15, and Ablumin were 0.871 (sensitivity 81.82%; specificity 91.67%), 0.878 (sensitivity 79.55%; specificity 83.33%), 0.835 (sensitivity 99.73%; specificity 66.67%), and 0.782 (sensitivity 88.64%; specificity 58.33%), respectively. Conclusions: We found that the rHUI and SrHUI calculated using the gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MRI reflected a combination of remnant hepatocyte function and liver volume, and these were useful as a quantitative assessment indicator of remnant liver functional reserve and can be a better predictor of PHLF after major hepatic resection.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their atomically thin structure and unique electronic and optoelectronic properties. To harness their full potential for applications in next-generation electronics and photonics, precise control over the dielectric environment surrounding the 2D material is critical. The lack of nucleation sites on 2D surfaces to form thin, uniform dielectric layers often leads to interfacial defects that degrade the device performance, posing a major roadblock in the realization of 2D-based devices. Here, we demonstrate a wafer-scale, low-temperature process (<250 °C) using atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the synthesis of uniform, conformal amorphous boron nitride (aBN) thin films. ALD deposition temperatures between 125 and 250 °C result in stoichiometric films with high oxidative stability, yielding a dielectric strength of 8.2 MV/cm. Utilizing a seed-free ALD approach, we form uniform aBN dielectric layers on 2D surfaces and fabricate multiple quantum well structures of aBN/MoS2 and aBN-encapsulated double-gated monolayer (ML) MoS2 field-effect transistors to evaluate the impact of aBN dielectric environment on MoS2 optoelectronic and electronic properties. Our work in scalable aBN dielectric integration paves a way towards realizing the theoretical performance of 2D materials for next-generation electronics.
