Objective: Our study evaluated the risk factors for new postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) by analyzing the data collected from patients who underwent first coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: Our study retrospectively collected data from January 2021 to December 2023 at Changzhi People's Hospital. The perioperative period data were collected, and logistic regression was used to analyze the independent predictors of the occurrence of POAF after CABG and the related predictive values of risk factors were analyzed by using the subjects' work characteristic curve (ROC). Results: A total of 169 patients were included, and there are 45 patients in the POAF group, with an incidence of 26.6%, and 124 in the non-POAF group. The POAF group was significantly higher than the non-POAF group in terms of age (69.2±8.8 years vs 62.3±9.3 years) and preoperative LAD (42.7±7.2mm vs 36.8±5.5mm), and the difference was significant (P<0.05). Preoperative HDL-C in the POAF group were lower than non-POAF group (1.0±0.5 mmol/l vs 1.4±0.7 mmol/l, P<0.05). The logistic regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between age, LAD, HDL-C and the occurrence of POAF (P<0.05). According to the ROC curve analysis, age >64.5 years, LAD >41mm, and HDL-C <0.9 mmol/l were the cut-off values for predicting the occurrence of POAF (AUC1=0.733; AUC2=0.741; AUC3=0.647, P < 0.05). The combined age + LAD + HDL-C (AUC = 0.755; P < 0.05) had a higher diagnostic value and high sensitivity. Conclusion: The age, LAD, and HDL-C are independent risk factors for the POAF after CABG, and clinicians should assess these risk factors as much as possible when managing patients in the perioperative period and make corresponding measures to prevent the development of POAF.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and overactive bladder (OAB) in adults. METHODS: This study adopts a cross-sectional approach to scrutinize data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), spanning from 2007 to 2018. It employs multivariable logistic regression along with restricted cubic splines (RCS) to investigate the relationship between the use of PPI and the incidence of OAB. Additionally, through interaction and stratification analyses, the study delves into how specific factors may influence this correlation. RESULTS: A total of 24,458 adults participated in this study. Individuals using PPIs exhibited higher rates of nocturia, urge incontinence, and OAB compared to non-users. After full adjustment, PPI users had a significantly increased risk of developing OAB (OR=1.36, 95%CI: 1.17-1.60). Moreover, with each year of continued PPI usage, the frequency of OAB symptoms escalated by 3% (P = .01). Further examinations within various subgroups maintained a uniform direction in these effect estimates. CONCLUSION: The findings of this research highlight a noteworthy positive link between the use of PPIs and the emergence of OAB among adults. Moreover, it was observed that an extended period of using PPIs correlates with a heightened likelihood of encountering OAB.

Petal-like heterojunction materials ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 with abundant oxygen vacancies are prepared on nickel foam (NF) using modified ionic hybrid thermal calcination technology. Nanoscale ion intermixing between Zn and Mo ions induces oxygen vacancies in the annealing process, thus creating additional electrochemical active sites and enhancing the electrical conductivity. The ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 conductive network skeleton forms the primary transport pathway for electrons, while the internal electric field of the heterojunction serves as the secondary pathway. ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 exhibits excellent rate performance and high capacity attributable to its unique double electron transport mode and the effect of oxygen vacancies. The initial discharge capacity at a current of 0.1 A g-1 is approximately 1774 mAh g-1, and the reversible capacity remains at 1100 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles. After a high current of 1 A g-1, the reversible capacity is observed to remain at approximately 1240 mAh g-1. The electronic structure, crystal structure, and work function of the heterojunction interface model are then analyzed by density functional theory (DFT). The analysis results indicate that the charge at the ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 interface is unevenly distributed, which leads to an enhanced degree of electrochemical reaction. The presence of an internal electric field improves the transport efficiency of the carriers. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the ZnCo2O4/CoMoO4 anode material designed in this work provides a reference for fabricating transition metal oxide-based lithium-ion batteries.

OBJECTIVE: The underlying mechanisms of Overactive Bladder (OAB) remain unclear. This research is designed to investigate the correlation between the intake of dietary live microorganisms and OAB. METHODS: This analysis encompasses a cross-sectional study of broad population information gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) spanning the years 2007 to 2018. Participants were categorized into three groups-low, medium, and high-according to their consumption of dietary live microorganisms, as per the Sanders Dietary Active Microbiota Classification System. We utilized a weighted logistic regression model, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and subgroup analyses to investigate the relationship between dietary live microorganism intake and OAB. RESULTS: This research encompassed 16,795 subjects. The incidence of OAB was reduced in the group consuming a high amount of live dietary microbes compared to the groups with low and medium intake of such microbes. After detailed adjustments for covariates, analysis revealed that participants in the high live dietary microbe group had notably reduced odds of OAB compared to those in the low live dietary microbe group (OR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.71-0.99, p = 0.03). RCS analysis indicated a nonlinear correlation between high dietary active microbiota intake and the incidence of OAB. CONCLUSION: This research emphasizes the potential advantages of a high dietary intake of active microbiota for preventing OAB. These findings support incorporating active microbiota into dietary guidelines, demonstrating their connection with a decreased incidence of OAB.

We present the first ab initio lattice calculations of spin and density correlations in hot neutron matter using high-fidelity interactions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. These correlations have a large impact on neutrino heating and shock revival in core-collapse supernovae and are encapsulated in functions called structure factors. Unfortunately, calculations of structure factors using high-fidelity chiral interactions were well out of reach using existing computational methods. In this Letter, we solve the problem using a computational approach called the rank-one operator (RO) method. The RO method is a general technique with broad applications to simulations of fermionic many-body systems. It solves the problem of exponential scaling of computational effort when using perturbation theory for higher-body operators and higher-order corrections. Using the RO method, we compute the vector and axial static structure factors for hot neutron matter as a function of temperature and density. The ab initio lattice results are in good agreement with virial expansion calculations at low densities but are more reliable at higher densities. Random phase approximation codes used to estimate neutrino opacity in core-collapse supernovae simulations can now be calibrated with ab initio lattice calculations.

The plant homeodomain finger (PHD finger) protein, a type of zinc finger protein extensively distributed in eukaryotes, plays diverse roles in regulating plant growth and development. While PHD finger proteins have been identified in various species, their functions remain largely unexplored in pea (Pisum sativum). In this study, we identified 84 members of the PHD finger gene family in pea, which displayed an uneven distribution across seven chromosomes. Through a comprehensive analysis using data from Arabidopsis thaliana and Medicago truncatula, we categorized the PHD finger proteins into 20 subfamilies via phylogenetic tree analysis. Each subfamily exhibited distinct variations in terms of quantity, genetic structure, conserved domains, and physical and chemical properties. Collinearity analysis revealed conserved evolutionary relationships among the PHD finger genes across the three different species. Furthermore, we identified the conserved and important roles of the subfamily M members in anther development. RT-qPCR and in situ hybridization revealed high expression of the pea subfamily M members PsPHD11 and PsPHD16 in microspores and the tapetum layer. In conclusion, this analysis of the PHD finger family in pea provides valuable guidance for future research on the biological roles of PHD finger proteins in pea and other leguminous plants.

Ab initio calculations have an essential role in our fundamental understanding of quantum many-body systems across many subfields, from strongly correlated fermions1-3 to quantum chemistry4-6 and from atomic and molecular systems7-9 to nuclear physics10-14. One of the primary challenges is to perform accurate calculations for systems where the interactions may be complicated and difficult for the chosen computational method to handle. Here we address the problem by introducing an approach called wavefunction matching. Wavefunction matching transforms the interaction between particles so that the wavefunctions up to some finite range match that of an easily computable interaction. This allows for calculations of systems that would otherwise be impossible owing to problems such as Monte Carlo sign cancellations. We apply the method to lattice Monte Carlo simulations15,16 of light nuclei, medium-mass nuclei, neutron matter and nuclear matter. We use high-fidelity chiral effective field theory interactions17,18 and find good agreement with empirical data. These results are accompanied by insights on the nuclear interactions that may help to resolve long-standing challenges in accurately reproducing nuclear binding energies, charge radii and nuclear-matter saturation in ab initio calculations19,20.

BACKGROUND: Recent interest in the Non-High Density to High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol ratio (NHHR) has emerged due to its potential role in metabolic disorders. However, the connection between NHHR and the development of kidney stones still lacks clarity. The primary goal of this research is to explore how NHHR correlates with kidney stone incidence. METHODS: An analysis was conducted on the data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2018, focusing on adults over 20 years diagnosed with kidney stones and those with available NHHR values. Employing weighted logistic regression and Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) models, NHHR levels' correlation with kidney stone risk was examined. Extensive subgroup analyses were conducted for enhanced reliability of the findings. RESULTS: The findings indicate a heightened kidney stone risk for those at the highest NHHR levels relative to those at the lowest (reference group). A notable non-linear correlation of NHHR with kidney stone incidence has been observed, with a significant P-value (< 0.001), consistent across various subgroups. CONCLUSION: A clear link exists between high NHHR levels and increased kidney stone risk in the American adult population. This study highlights NHHR's significance as a potential indicator in kidney stone formation.

Honokiol (HNK) is a typical natural biphenyl polyphenol compound. It has been proven to have a wide range of biological activities, including pharmacological effects such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antimicrobial. However, due to the poor stability, water solubility, and bioavailability of HNK, HNK has not been used in clinical treatment. This article reviews the latest research on the pharmacological activity of HNK and summarizes the HNK derivatives designed and improved by several researchers. Reviewing these contents could promote the research process of HNK and guide the design of better HNK derivatives for clinical application in the future.

The nuclear charge radius of ^{32}Si was determined using collinear laser spectroscopy. The experimental result was confronted with ab initio nuclear lattice effective field theory, valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group, and mean field calculations, highlighting important achievements and challenges of modern many-body methods. The charge radius of ^{32}Si completes the radii of the mirror pair ^{32}Ar-^{32}Si, whose difference was correlated to the slope L of the symmetry energy in the nuclear equation of state. Our result suggests L≤60 MeV, which agrees with complementary observables.

BACKGROUND: Kidney stones exhibit a robust correlation with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of this research is to investigate the correlation between kidney stones and Life's Essential 8 (LE8), a newly updated assessment of cardiovascular health (CVH), among adults in the United States. METHODS: In this study, which analyzed data from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we employed LE8 scores (ranging from 0 to 100) as the independent variable, classifying them into low, moderate, and high CVH categories. The research examined the relationship between LE8 scores and kidney stones by using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models, with kidney stones as the dependent variable. RESULTS: Out of the 14,117 participants in this research, the weighted mean LE8 score was 69.70 ± 0.27. After accounting for confounding factors, there was an inverse association between higher LE8 scores and the likelihood of developing kidney stones (OR of 0.81 per 10-point increase, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.77-0.85), demonstrating a non-linear dose-response pattern. Similar patterns were observed for health behaviors, health factor scores, and kidney stones. Stratified analyses demonstrated a stable negative correlation between LE8 scores and kidney stones across different subgroups. CONCLUSION: LE8 and its subscale scores exhibited a robust and inverse correlation with the occurrence of kidney stones. Encouraging adherence to optimal CVH levels has the potential to serve as an effective strategy in preventing and minimizing the occurrence of kidney stones.

Semi-leafless represents an advantageous plant architecture in pea breeding due to its ability to enhance resistance to lodging and potentially to powdery mildew. The introduction of semi-leafless pea varieties is considered a seminal advancement in pea breeding over the past half-century. The afila (af) mutation leads to the replacement of lateral leaflets by highly branched tendrils; combined with the semi-dwarfing le mutation, it forms the semi-leafless cultivated variety. In this study, we identified that mutations in two tandemly-arrayed genes encoding Cys(2)His(2) zinc finger transcription factors, PsPALM1a and PsPALM1b, were closely associated with the afila phenotype. These two genes may be deleted in the af mutant. In situ hybridization showed that both genes exhibit specific expression in early leaflet primordia. Furthermore, suppression of PsPALM1a/PsPALM1b resulted in a high frequency of conversion of lateral leaflets into tendrils. In conclusion, our study provides genetic evidence demonstrating that mutations in PsPALM1a and PsPALM1b are responsible for the af locus, contributing to a better understanding of compound leaf formation in peas and offering new insights for breeding applications related to afila.

Urothelial damage and barrier dysfunction emerge as the foremost mechanisms in Hunner-type interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (HIC). Although treatments aimed at urothelial regeneration and repair have been employed, their therapeutic effectiveness remains limited due to the inadequate understanding of specific cell types involved in damage and the lack of specific molecular targets within these mechanisms. Therefore, we harnessed single-cell RNA sequencing to elucidate the heterogeneity and developmental trajectory of urothelial cells within HIC bladders. Through reclustering, we identified eight distinct clusters of urothelial cells. There was a significant reduction in UPK3A+ umbrella cells and a simultaneous increase in progenitor-like pluripotent cells (PPCs) within the HIC bladder. Pseudotime analysis of the urothelial cells in the HIC bladder revealed that cells faced challenges in differentiating into UPK3A+ umbrella cells, while PPCs exhibited substantial proliferation to compensate for the loss of UPK3A+ umbrella cells. The urothelium in HIC remains unrepaired, despite the substantial proliferation of PPCs. Thus, we propose that inhibiting the pivotal signaling pathways responsible for the injury to UPK3A+ umbrella cells is paramount for restoring the urothelial barrier and alleviating lower urinary tract symptoms in HIC patients. Subsequently, we identified key molecular pathways (TLR3 and NR2F6) associated with the injury of UPK3A+ umbrella cells in HIC urothelium. Finally, we conducted in vitro and in vivo experiments to confirm the potential of the TLR3-NR2F6 axis as a promising therapeutic target for HIC. These findings hold the potential to inhibit urothelial injury, providing promising clues for early diagnosis and functional bladder self-repair strategies for HIC patients. © 2024 The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

BACKGROUND: The Cabrol procedure has undergone various modifications and developments since its invention. However, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding meta-analyses assessing it. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and long-term outcomes of the Cabrol procedure and its modifications. Pooling was conducted using random effects model. Outcome events were reported as linearized occurrence rates (percentage per patient-year) with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: A total of 14 studies involving 833 patients (mean age: 50.8 years; 68.0% male) were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled all-cause early mortality was 9.0% (66 patients), and the combined rate of reoperation due to bleeding was 4.9% (17 patients). During the average 4.4-year follow-up (3,727.3 patient-years), the annual occurrence rates (linearized) for complications were as follows: 3.63% (2.79-4.73) for late mortality, 0.64% (0.35-1.16) for aortic root reoperation, 0.57% (0.25-1.31) for hemorrhage events, 0.66% (0.16-2.74) for thromboembolism, 0.60% (0.29-1.26) for endocarditis, 2.32% (1.04-5.16) for major valve-related adverse events, and 0.58% (0.34-1.00) for Cabrol-related coronary graft complications. CONCLUSION: This systematic review provides evidence that the outcomes of the Cabrol procedure and its modifications are acceptable in terms of mortality, reoperation, anticoagulation, and valve-related complications, especially in Cabrol-related coronary graft complications. Notably, the majority of Cabrol procedures were performed in reoperations and complex cases. Furthermore, the design and anastomosis of the Dacron interposition graft for coronary reimplantation, considering natural anatomy and physiological hemodynamics, may promise future advancements in this field.

BACKGROUND: The alarming mortality rate of sepsis in ICUs has garnered significant attention. The precise etiology remains elusive. Mitochondria, often referred to as the cellular powerhouses, have been postulated to have a dysfunctional role, correlating with the onset and progression of sepsis. However, the exact causal relationship remains to be defined. METHOD: Employing the Mendelian randomization approach, this study systematically analyzed data from the IEUOpenGWAS and UKbiobank databases concerning mitochondrial function-related proteins and their association with sepsis, aiming to delineate the causal relationship between the two. RESULTS: The findings underscored a statistically significant association of GrpE1 with sepsis, registering a P value of 0.005 and an OR of 0.499 (95% CI: 0.307-0.810). Likewise, HTRA2, ISCU, and CUP3 each manifested significant associations with sepsis, yielding OR values of 0.585, 0.637, and 0.634, respectively. These results suggest potential implications of the aforementioned proteins in the pathogenesis of sepsis. CONCLUSION: The present study furnishes novel evidence elucidating the roles of GrpE1, HTRA2, ISCU, and CUP3 in the pathophysiology of sepsis. Such insights pave the way for a deeper understanding of the pathological mechanisms underpinning sepsis and hint at promising therapeutic strategies for the future.

Di (2-ethyl-hexyl) phthalate (DEHP) mainly enters the human body through the digestive tract, respiratory tract, and skin. At the same time, it has reproductive and developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity, and so on, which can cause the decrease of sperm motility. Asthenospermia is also known as low sperm motility, and the semen quality of men in some areas of China is declining year by year. Interestingly, previous studies have shown that sleep disorders can also lead to asthenospermia. However, the relationship between sleep, DEHP, and asthenospermia is still unclear. Analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) population database showed that DEHP was associated with sleep disorders, and subsequent experiments in mice and Drosophila indicated that DEHP exposure had certain effects on sleep and asthenospermia. Furthermore, we analyzed the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) to find out the common signaling pathway among the three: hypoxia-inducible factor 1(HIF-1). Then Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) was used to screen out the proteins that DEHP affected the HIF-1 pathway: glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), serine/threonine-protein kinase (AKT1), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and finally Western blot analysis was used to detect the expression levels of the three proteins. Compared with the control group, DEHP decreased the protein expression levels of GAPDH and AKT1 in the HIF-1 pathway, and caused sleep disorders and decreased sperm motility. This study provides preliminary evidence for exploring the mechanism among DEHP, sleep disorders, and asthenospermia.
