BACKGROUND: The strong connection between gut microbes and human health has been confirmed by an increasing number of studies. Although probiotics have been found to relieve ulcerative colitis, the mechanism varies by the species involved. In this study, the physiological, immune and pathological factors of mice were measured and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was conducted to investigate the potential mechanisms in preventing ulcerative colitis. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that ingestion of Lactobacillus fermentum GLF-217 and Lactobacillus plantarum FLP-215 significantly alleviated ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), as evidenced by the increase in body weight, food intake, water intake and colon length as well as the decrease in disease activity index, histopathological score and inflammatory factor. Both strains not only improved intestinal mucosa by increasing mucin-2 and zonula occludens-1, but also improved the immune system response by elevating interleukin-10 levels and decreasing the levels of interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-γ. Moreover, L. fermentum GLF-217 and L. plantarum FLP-215 play a role in preventing DSS-induced colitis by regulating the structure of gut microbiota and promoting the formation of short-chain fatty acids. CONCLUSIONS: This study may provide a reference for the prevention strategy of ulcerative colitis. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study aimed to explore and develop data mining models for adult age estimation based on CT reconstruction images from the sternum. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) images of chest CT were retrospectively collected from a modern Chinese population, and data from 2700 patients (1349 males and 1351 females) aged 20 to 70 years were obtained. A staging technique within four indicators was applied. Several data mining models were established, and mean absolute error (MAE) was the primary comparison parameter. The intraobserver and interobserver agreement levels were good. Within internal validation, the optimal data mining model obtained the lowest MAE of 9.08 in males and 10.41 in females. For the external validation (N = 200), MAEs were 7.09 in males and 7.15 in females. In conclusion, the accuracy of our model for adult age estimation was among similar studies. MIP images of the sternum could be a potential age indicator. However, it should be combined with other indicators since the accuracy level is still unsatisfactory.

Dracocephalum moldavica, known as Xiang-qing-lan (in Chinese), is a traditional folk medicine, which was commonly used by Mongolian and Xinjiang Uyghurs area. Dracocephalum moldavica has the effects of purging liver fire, clearing stomach heat, hemostasis. It is used for treating insufficient heart and blood, weakened brain function, weak feeling and spirit disease etc. This review aimed to summarize the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and application of Dracocephalum moldavica, which expected to provide theoretical support for future utilization and highlight the further investigation of this vital plant. In addition to the essential oil, approximately 154 compounds have been isolated and identified from aerial parts of the Dracocephalum moldavica, including flavonoids, terpenoids, lignans, phenylpropanoids, phenols, glycosides, polysaccharide and other compounds. Extensive pharmacological activities of the extracts or compounds of Dracocephalum moldavica in vivo and in vitro were confirmed including cardiovascular protection, antioxidative, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-complementary and chronic mountain sickness. Moreover, Dracocephalum moldavica is used in a wide range of applications in food, biological pesticides and cosmetics. In the future, Dracocephalum moldavica needs further study, such as paying more attention to quality control, toxicity, pharmacological mechanism and pharmacokinetics.

OBJECTIVE: Prompt and effective wound repair is an essential strategy to promote recovery and prevent infection in patients with various types of trauma. Platelets can release a variety of growth factors upon activation to facilitate revascularization and tissue repair, provided that their activation is uncontrollable. The present study is designed to explore the selective activation of platelets by photodynamic and photothermal effects (PDE/PTE) as well as the trauma repair mediated by PDE/PTE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the current research, platelets were extracted from the blood of mice. Indocyanine green (ICG) was applied to induce PDE/PTE. The uptake of ICG by platelets was detected by laser confocal microscopy and flow cytometry. The cellular integrity was measured by microscopy. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and temperature of platelets were assayed by 2,7-Dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) and temperature detector. The activation of platelets was measured by western blots (WB), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The release of growth factor was detected by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay (Elisa), wherein the in vitro cell proliferation was investigated by 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EDU) assay. The wound infection rates model and histological examination were constructed to assay the ICG-loaded platelet-mediated wound repair. RESULTS: Platelets could load with ICG, a kind of photodynamic and photothermal agent, as carriers and remain intact. Near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation of ICG-loaded platelets (ICG@PLT) facilitated higher temperature and ROS generation, which immediately activated ICG@PLT, as characterized by increased membrane p-selectin (CD62p), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thromboxane A2 receptor (TXA2R) expression, elevated hydrated particle size, and prominent aggregation in platelets. Further investigation revealed that massive insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) were released from the activated ICG@PLT, which also promoted the proliferation of endothelial cells and keratinocytes in co-culture. In consequence, activated platelets and increased neovascularization could be observed in rats with wound infection treated by ICG@PLT in the presence of NIR. More impressively, the hydrogel containing ICG@PLT accelerated wound healing and suppressed inflammation under NIR, exhibiting excellent wound repair properties. CONCLUSION: Taken together, the current work identified that platelets could be activated by PDE/PTE and thereby release growth factor, potentiating wound repair in a controlled manner.

This study aims to explore the preventive effects and underlying mechanisms of Lactobacillus fermentum CKCC1858 (CKCC1), L. fermentum CKCC1369 (CKCC2), Lactobacillus plantarum CKCC1312 (CKCC3), and Lactobacillus gasseri CKCC1913 (CKCC4) on high-fat diet combined with streptozotocin (HFD/STZ)-stimulated type 2 diabetes (T2D) in mice. Generally, the results indicated that most of the four probiotics reduced weight loss and liver and pancreas damage, significantly (p < 0.05) improved glucose metabolism by regulating glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), fasting glucose and insulin levels, and increasing expression of glucose transporters. Probiotics improved hyperlipemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress by reducing the secretion of blood lipids and proinflammatory cytokines, increasing antioxidant enzymes. Metagenomic results revealed that probiotics restored gut microbiota via enhancing (reducing) the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria (harmful bacteria) and altered specific metabolic pathways in T2D mice. CKCC1, CKCC3, and CKCC4 showed excellent effects compared to CKCC2. These results indicated that probiotics potentially prevented T2D, which is strain-specific.

To investigate the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum CKCC1858, LF on the prevention of hyperlipidemia and its correlation with gut microbiota, golden hamsters were fed a high-fat diet alone or in combination with the probiotic for 6 weeks. The results showed that the LF intervention alleviated HFD-induced hyperlipidemia and liver damage, as evidenced by the reduced serum lipid profile levels and liver function markers. More importantly, the LF intervention attenuated HFD-induced microbiota dysbiosis by enhancing the abundance of SCFA-producing bacteria and reshaping the metabolic functions of the gut microbiota, likely contributing to its pronounced preventive effects on hyperlipidemia. This study elucidated the mechanism of the preventive effect of probiotics on hyperlipidemia in terms of regulating gut microbiota, and provided suggestions for regulating gut microbiota through probiotic interventions to improve lipid metabolism.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by dysregulation of lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, and gut microbiota disorder. Compared to drug interventions, probiotic interventions may have a more enduring effect without producing any side effects. Thus, the potential of probiotics as a therapeutic approach for diabetes and other metabolic disorders has gained increasing attention in recent years. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of Lactobacillus gasseri CKCC1913, a potential probiotic strain, in high-fat diet-induced insulin-resistant diabetes using the C57BL/6J mouse animal model. From the results, L. gasseri CKCC1913 has been shown to increase glucose tolerance, reduce fasting blood glucose levels in diabetic mice, and reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6. Besides, L. gasseri CKCC1913 intervention effectively alleviated oxidative stress damage by increasing SOD activity, decreasing MDA levels, reducing insulin resistance, and improving dyslipidemia caused by diabetes. The potential mechanism of L. gasseri CKCC1913 in improving metabolic health and alleviating diabetes involves an increased abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Parabacteroides merdae, which directly produce short-chain fatty acids that help regulate immune cells and reduce inflammation. SCFAs also enter the bloodstream and promote antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver, protecting against oxidative damage. Additionally, L. gasseri CKCC1913 influences local bacterial metabolism pathways, such as the superpathway of unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, leading to an increase in unsaturated fatty acids, increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and improving lipid metabolism and glucose control in diabetic mice. In summary, in this study, L. gasseri CKCC1913 and its potential impact on metabolic health highlight the promising potential of probiotics as a therapeutic approach for diabetes. Future research should focus on identifying the optimal dose and duration, investigating the long-term effects and mechanisms of action, and exploring the potential use of probiotics as an adjunct to other therapies or in preventing metabolic disorders.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) resulting from viral infections during pregnancy is linked to increased rates of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. However, the mechanisms underlying MIA-induced neurobehavioral abnormalities remain unclear. Here, we used a poly (I:C)-induced MIA mouse model to demonstrate the presence of multiple behavioral deficits in male offspring. Through RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), we identified significant upregulation of genes involved in axonogenesis, synaptogenesis, and glutamatergic synaptic neurotransmission in the mPFC of MIA mice. Electrophysiological analyses further revealed an excitatory-inhibitory (E/I) synaptic imbalance in mPFC pyramidal neurons, leading to hyperactivity in this brain region. Cannabidiol (CBD) effectively alleviated the behavioral abnormalities observed in MIA offspring by reducing glutamatergic transmission and enhancing GABAergic neurotransmission of mPFC pyramidal neurons. Activation of GPR55 by lipid lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI), an endogenous GPR55 agonist, specifically in the mPFC of healthy animals led to MIA-associated behavioral phenotypes, which CBD could effectively reverse. Moreover, we found that a GPR55 antagonist can mimic CBD's beneficial effects, indicating that CBD's therapeutic effects are mediated via the LPI-GPR55 signaling pathway. Therefore, we identified mPFC as a primary node of a neural network that mediates MIA-induced behavioral abnormalities in offspring. Our work provides insights into the mechanisms underlying the developmental consequences of MIA and identifies CBD as a promising therapeutic approach to alleviate these effects.

Synchronization is one of the key issues in three-phase AC power systems. Its characteristics have been dramatically changed with the large-scale integration of power-electronic-based renewable energy, mainly including a permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG) and a double-fed induction generator (DFIG) for wind energy and a photovoltaic (PV) generator for solar energy. In this paper, we review recent progresses on the synchronization stability and multi-timescale properties of the renewable-dominated power system (RDPS), from nodes and network perspectives. All PMSG, DFIG, and PV are studied. In the traditional synchronous generator (SG) dominated power system, its dynamics can be described by the differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), where the dynamic apparatuses are modeled by differential equations and the stationary networks are described by algebraic equations. Unlike the single electromechanical timescale and DAE description for the SG-dominated power system, the RDPS dynamics should be described by the multiscale dynamics of both nodes and networks. For three different timescales, including the AC current control, DC voltage control, and rotor electromechanical timescales, their corresponding models are well established. In addition, for the multiscale network dynamics, the dynamical network within the AC current control timescale, which should be described by differential equations, can also be simplified as algebraic equations. Thus, the RDPS dynamics can be put into a similar DAE diagram for each timescale to the traditional power system dynamics, with which most of power electrical engineers are familiar. It is also found that the phase-locked loop for synchronization plays a crucial role in the whole system dynamics. The differences in the synchronization and multiscale characteristics between the traditional power system and the RDPS are well uncovered and summarized. Therefore, the merit of this paper is to establish a basic physical picture for the stability mechanism in the RDPS, which still lacks systematic studies and is controversial in the field of electrical power engineering.

Electroacupuncture (EA) has a weight loss effect, but the underlying molecular mechanisms of weight loss with EA have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the modulatory effects of EA on the phenotype of hypothalamic microglia in obese mice. A total of 50 male C57BL/6J mice were used in this study. There were three groups in this experiment: The conventional diet group (Chow group), the high-fat diet group (HFD group), and the EA intervention group (HFD + EA group). EA was applied at "Tianshu (ST25)", "Guanyuan (RN4)", "Zusanli (ST36)" and "Zhongwan (RN12)" every day for 10 min. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, immunohistochemical staining, and real-time PCR were applied in this study. The results showed that EA intervention was associated with a decrease in body weight, food intake, adipose tissue weight, and adipocyte size. At the same time, EA induced microglia to exhibit an M2 phenotype, representing reduced iNOS/TNF-α and increased Arg-1/IL-10/BDNF, which may be due to the promotion of TREM2 expression. EA also reduced microglia enrichment in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus and declined TLR4 and IL-6, inhibiting microglia-mediated neuroinflammation. In addition, EA treatment promoted POMC expression, which may be associated with reduced food intake and weight loss in obese mice. This work provides novel evidence of EA against obesity. However, further study is necessary of EA as a therapy for obesity.

Radiology plays a crucial role in forensic anthropology for age estimation. However, most studies rely on morphological methods. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of using pubic bone mineral density (BMD) as a new age estimation method in the Chinese population. 468 pubic bone CT scans from living individuals in a Chinese hospital aged 18 to 87 years old were used to measure pubic BMD. The BMD of the bilateral pubic bone was measured using the Mimics software on cross-sectional CT images and the mean BMD of the bilateral pubic bone was also calculated. Regression analysis was performed to assess the correlation between pubic BMD and chronological age and to develop mathematical models for age estimation. We evaluated the accuracy of the best regression model using an independent validation sample by calculating the mean absolute error (MAE). Among all established models, the cubic regression model had the highest R2 value in both genders, with R2 = 0.550 for males and R2 = 0.634 for females. The results of the best model test showed that the MAE for predicting age using pubic BMD was 8.66 years in males and 7.69 years in females. This study highlights the potential of pubic BMD as a useful objective indicator for adult age estimation and could be used as an alternative in forensic practice when other better indicators are lacking.

OBJECTIVE: Adult age estimation (AAE) is a challenging task. Deep learning (DL) could be a supportive tool. This study aimed to develop DL models for AAE based on CT images and compare their performance to the manual visual scoring method. METHODS: Chest CT were reconstructed using volume rendering (VR) and maximum intensity projection (MIP) separately. Retrospective data of 2500 patients aged 20.00-69.99 years were obtained. The cohort was split into training (80%) and validation (20%) sets. Additional independent data from 200 patients were used as the test set and external validation set. Different modality DL models were developed accordingly. Comparisons were hierarchically performed by VR versus MIP, single-modality versus multi-modality, and DL versus manual method. Mean absolute error (MAE) was the primary parameter of comparison. RESULTS: A total of 2700 patients (mean age = 45.24 years ± 14.03 [SD]) were evaluated. Of single-modality models, MAEs yielded by VR were lower than MIP. Multi-modality models generally yielded lower MAEs than the optimal single-modality model. The best-performing multi-modality model obtained the lowest MAEs of 3.78 in males and 3.40 in females. On the test set, DL achieved MAEs of 3.78 in males and 3.92 in females, which were far better than the MAEs of 8.90 and 6.42 respectively, for the manual method. For the external validation, MAEs were 6.05 in males and 6.68 in females for DL, and 6.93 and 8.28 for the manual method. CONCLUSIONS: DL demonstrated better performance than the manual method in AAE based on CT reconstruction of the costal cartilage. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Aging leads to diseases, functional performance deterioration, and both physical and physiological damage over time. Accurate AAE may aid in diagnosing the personalization of aging processes. KEY POINTS: • VR-based DL models outperformed MIP-based models with lower MAEs and higher R2 values. • All multi-modality DL models showed better performance than single-modality models in adult age estimation. • DL models achieved a better performance than expert assessments.

Synchronization stability is one of central problems in power systems, and it is becoming much more complicated with the high penetration of renewable energy and power electronics devices. In this paper, we review recent work by several nonlinear models for renewable-dominated power systems in terms of multiple timescales, in particular, grid-tied converters within the DC voltage timescale. For the simplest model, a second-order differential equations called the generalized swing equation by considering only the phase-locked loop (PLL) is obtained, which shows a similar form with the well-known swing equation for a synchronous generator in the traditional power systems. With more outer controllers included, fourth-order and fifth-order models can be obtained. The fourth-order model is called the extended generalized swing equation, exhibiting the combined function of grid synchronization and active power balance on the DC capacitor. In addition, a nonlinear model for a two coupled converter system is given. Based on these studies, we find that the PLL plays a key role in synchronization stability. In summary, the value of this paper is to clarify the key concept of the synchronization stability in renewable-dominated power systems based on different nonlinear models, which still lacks systematic studies and is controversial in the field of electrical power engineering. Meanwhile, it clearly uncovers that the synchronization stability of converters has its root in the phase synchronization concept in nonlinear sciences.

Although many reviews of MCDM techniques already exist, there is a lack of holistic review efforts on MCDM in the field of low-carbon transport and green logistics. Considering these shortcomings in the state of the art, this paper systematically reviews more than 190 papers from 2010 to 2022, constructs a general structure of MCDM techniques for this research topic, provides a comprehensive review and analysis of it, and clarifies the current practices. Furthermore, future directions for the development of MCDM techniques for green logistics and low-carbon transportation systems are presented as well.

RESUMO

Mitochondrial inflammation triggered by abnormal mitochondrial division and regulated by the Drp1/HK1/NLRP3 pathway is correlated with the progression of aging-associated cognitive impairment (AACI). Alpinetin is a novel flavonoid derived from Zingiberaceae that has many bioactivities such as antiinflammation and anti-oxidation. However, whether alpinetin alleviates AACI by suppressing Drp1/HK1/NLRP3 pathway-inhibited mitochondrial inflammation is still unknown. In the present study, D-galactose (D-gal)-induced aging mice and BV-2 cells were used, and the effects of alpinetin on learning and memory function, neuroprotection and activation of the Drp1/HK1/NLRP3 pathway were investigated. Our data indicated that alpinetin significantly alleviated cognitive dysfunction and neuronal damage in the CA1 and CA3 regions of D-gal-treated mice. Moreover, D-gal-induced microglial activation was markedly reduced by alpinetin by inhibiting the Drp1/HK1/NLRP3 pathway-suppressed mitochondrial inflammation, down-regulating the levels of p-Drp1 (s616), VDAC, NLRP3, ASC, Cleaved-caspase 1, IL-18, and IL-1ß, and up-regulating the expression of HK1. Furthermore, after Drp1 inhibition by Mdivi-1 in vitro, the inhibitory effect of alpinetin on Drp1/HK1/NLRP3 pathway was more evident. In summary, the current results implied that alpinetin attenuated aging-related cognitive deficits by inhibiting the Drp1/HK1/NLRP3 pathway and suppressing mitochondrial inflammation, suggesting that the inhibition of the Drp1/HK1/NLRP3 pathway is one of the mechanisms by which alpinetin attenuates AACI.

Economic development and infrastructure improvement will inevitably lead to the accumulation of construction waste and tailings, which has not only a huge impact on the environment but is also a waste of resources. Recycling these resources and making green concrete is an effective way to solve these problems. In this study, the salt spray erosion characteristics and erosion mechanism of tailings recycled concrete (TRC) with polypropylene fibers were studied through macro and micro methods. The results showed that its compressive strength and splitting tensile strength increased at first and then decreased, with the optimum content of 0.6-0.9%, and the strength increase coefficient reached its maximum value at the erosion period being 14 d to 28 d. Under the same erosion cycle, when the fiber content was low (≤0.6-0.9%), the erosion depth hardly fluctuated. While the fiber content changed from 0.6% to 1.2%, the erosion depth and curing ability (erosion for 90 days) increased by 16.29% and 11.20%, which implied that its erosion resistance decreased sharply. Through SEM microscopic analysis, it could be observed that when the fiber content was low, the matrix structure and porosity had little change; while the fiber content was excessive, the porosity increased greatly. The longer the erosion period was, the greater the cumulative expansion of salt crystals was, and the larger the porosity was, whose results were in good agreement with the experimental results. This research provides a significant theoretical basis for the application of TRC in engineering.

Obesity is currently one of the most important challenges to public health worldwide. Acupuncture has been widely used to treat obesity. However, whether acupuncture regulates intestinal innate immunity via intestinal microbiota against obesity remains to be elucidated. In this study, electroacupuncture (EA) effectively reduced body weight and fat accumulation in obese mice persistently fed a high-fat diet. Full-length 16S rDNA sequencing showed dysbiotic microbiota in the cecum of obese mice. The composition and function of the cecal microbiota of obese mice were markedly restored after EA treatment. After 21 d of EA intervention, the expression of defensin alpha 5 (Defa5) was restored to healthy controls, whereas fat digestion and absorption genes including fabp1 were markedly decreased in the jejunum of obese mice. The Defa5 levels were positively correlated with the family Lachnospiraceae and negatively correlated with obesity indexes. EA also reduced tissue inflammation, ameliorated misaligned glucose tolerance, and inhibited key genes for intestinal lipid absorption. In summary, EA exerted an anti-obesity effect by promoting intestinal defensins, rescuing dysbiotic cecal microbiota, and reducing lipid absorption in a synergistic mode. We present for the first time the key role of alpha defensins in the relationship between gut microbiota and disease during electroacupuncture treatment of obesity. The mucosal innate immunity seems to have a stronger ability to shape the microbiota than dietary factors.

To improve the deformation performance of recycled concrete with tailings (TRC), its carbonization characteristics and deterioration mechanism with different polypropylene fiber content were analyzed macroscopically and microscopically. The results showed that the fiber had little effect on the compressive strength, which increased first and then decreased, with the optimum content being 0.6%. The splitting tensile strength first increased and then tended to be stable, with the optimum dosage ranging from 0.6% to 0.9%. The more the content, the higher the peak strain and the lower the elastic modulus. The rising section of its constitutive curve changed little, while the falling section became more gentle. Carbonization made the relative dynamic elastic modulus change small with a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, and the optimum content was 0.6-0.9%. When the fiber content was small, the influence on the carbonization depth did not remain significant, but when it was large, the depth increased obviously, and this critical content was about 0.6%. Microscopically, through nuclear-magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, due to the strong tensioning effect of the fiber, when a small amount was added, the porosity and pore structure had not been significantly changed, so the impact on its resistance to carbonization was not obvious. However, after excessive addition, the interface transition zone (ITZ) between different materials became larger, resulting in a significant increase of its harmful cracks and a great impact on the anti-carbonization ability, with the optimal content being about 0.6%. This study provides a theoretical reference for the deformation performance improvement measure of TRC, which would be helpful for the rapid promotion and application of green concrete in engineering practice.

In this work, amplitude envelope synchronization (AES), as a general phenomenon characterized with highly correlated amplitude envelope but uncorrelated phases and frequencies in coupled nonidentical nonlinear systems, is investigated theoretically and numerically. Two different types of AES patterns, including sinusoidal and nonsinusoidal, are widely observable in coupled periodic and/or chaotic oscillators. They both come from modulation of phase mismatch on amplitude but show different patterns due to different behaviors of phase mismatch. With increase of frequency mismatch, the system tends to crossover from nonsinusoidal to sinusoidal AES. With the aid of synchronization manifold and transverse stability analyses of the AES state, the physical mechanism and scale relations for the AES are well revealed. We expect that all these results could uncover the generality of AES in coupled nonlinear oscillators and help to understand the rich dynamics of phase and amplitude coupling in multidisciplinary fields.
