RESUMO

Geopolymer composite spheres derived from potassium-activated graphene-modified slag/fly ash powder were produced in a polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) solvent. The effect of graphene type (graphene oxide (GO) and few-layered graphene (GNP)) on the pore structure and lead ions (Pb2+) removal performance of the spheres were evaluated. The results showed that the composite spheres modified with GOs (0.1-0.4 wt%) and GNPs (1-4 wt%) could be spheroidized with an improved performance to adsorb Pb2+ in solution. The graphene-containing spheres reached a maximum BET surface area of 68.85 m2/g. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models could express the adsorption process, which was controlled by both monolayer adsorption and chemisorption. The obtained spheres also showed high adsorption capacities for Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions. Chemical, physical, electrostatic, ion exchange and cation-π interaction were attributed to the adsorption mechanism of the spheres. The spheres showed good cycling ability compared to those without graphene, which had potential application in heavy metal wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-exos) are phospholipid bimolecular vesicles containing various materials, and they mediate crosstalk among cells. MSC-exos can maintain glucose homeostasis and delay the progression of diabetes and its microvascular complications through multiple mechanisms, such as by improving ß-cell viability and insulin resistance as well as through multiple signal transduction pathways. However, related knowledge has not yet been systematically summarized. Therefore, we reviewed the applications and relevant mechanisms of MSC-exos in treatments for diabetes and its microvascular complications, particularly treatments for improving islet ß-cells viability, insulin resistance, diabetic nephropathy, and retinopathy.

RESUMO

SCOPE: Maternal nutrition during pregnancy is related to intrauterine fetal development. The authors' previous work reports that prenatal high sucrose (HS) diet impaired micro-vascular functions in postnatal offspring. It is unclear whether/how prenatal HS causes vascular injury during fetal life. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pregnant rats are fed with normal drinking water or 20% high-sucrose solution during the whole gestational period. Pregnant HS increases maternal weight before delivery. Fetal thoracic aorta is separated for experiments. Angiotensin II (AII)-stimulated vascular contraction of fetal thoracic arteries in HS group is greater, which mainly results from the enhanced AT1 receptor (AT1R) function and the downstream signaling. Nifedipine significantly increases vascular tension in HS group, indicating that the L-type calcium channels (LTCCs) function is strengthened. 2-Aminoethyl diphenylborinate (2-APB), inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors (IP3Rs) inhibitor, increases vascular tension induced by AII in HS group and ryanodine receptors-sensitive vascular tone shows no difference in the two groups, which suggested that the activity of IP3Rs-operated calcium channels is increased. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that prenatal HS induces vascular dysfunction of thoracic arteries in fetal offspring by enhancing AT1R, LTCCs function and IP3Rs-associated calcium channels, providing new information regarding the impact of prenatal HS on the functional development of fetal vascular systems.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: In this retrospective study, we investigated whether first trimester serum placental growth factor (PIGF) differed amongst pregnancies with placenta previa-accreta and non-adherent placenta previa and healthy pregnancies. METHODS: In 1 January 2017-30 September 2019, a total of 177 pregnant females were included in the study, as follows: 35 cases of placenta previa-accreta, 30 cases of non-adherent placenta previa, and 112 cases of age and BMI-matched, healthy pregnant controls. PIGF multiples of the median (MoM) were acquired from laboratory data files. The predictor of placenta accreta was analyzed by using multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: PIGF MoM of placenta previa-accreta group was significantly higher than those of the non-adherent placenta previa group and control group (p = 0.0098 < 0.01, p = 0.0002 < 0.01). Serum PIGF was found to be significantly positively associated with placenta accreta after adjusted gestational week at time of blood sampling, BMI, and age (OR: 4.83; 95% CI: 1.91-12.24;p = 0.0009 < 0.01). In addition, previous cesarean section history (OR: 2.75; 95% CI: 1.23-6.17; p = 0.014 < 0.05) and smoking (OR: 9.17; 95% CI: 1.69-49.62; p = 0.010 < 0.05) were also significantly associated with placenta accreta. CONCLUSION: Increased first trimester serum PIGF was significantly positively associated with placenta accreta, suggesting that the potential role of PIGF in identifying pregnancies at high risk for placenta accreta. Previous cesarean section history and smoking may be the risk factors for accreta in placenta previa patients.

RESUMO

In this paper, hollow gangue microspheres (GM) were introduced into a geopolymer matrix through a geopolymeric method; our aim was to synthesize a green and low-cost adsorbent (GM/KGP) for the removal of heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+) from aqueous solutions. We investigated the microstructure of the GM/KGP adsorbent, as well as the effects of adsorbent dose, time, and temperature on adsorption behavior; moreover, an adsorption mechanism was proposed. The GM/KGP adsorbent possessed a typical broad amorphous structure and abundant O-containing functional groups on its surface. The adsorption of Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ onto the GM/KGP adsorbent fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the equilibrium isotherm adsorption data were fitted well to the Langmuir equation. The adsorption mechanism GM/KGP was attributed to physical, chemical, and electrostatic attractions, as well as to ion exchange. We conclude that this novel adsorbent has great potential in removing heavy metal ions from contaminated wastewater.

RESUMO

: Several reports have demonstrated T regulatory cells may play an important role in the pathophysiology of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). As the immunomodulator, bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) (BM-MSCs) regulate T regulatory cells and show therapeutic effects on autoimmune diseases. However, it is not clear how BM-MSCs affect ITP. In this study, we explored the specific effects of BM-MSCs on ITP in mice. Using a murine model of ITP, mice were randomly divided into three groups: normal control group, ITP control group and ITP and BM-MSCs group. Platelet (PLT) levels were monitored by an automatic blood cell counter, and T regulatory cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. Compared with the untreated ITP mice, the PLT level of the ITP mice was significantly increased after BM-MSCs treatment. In the BM-MSCs group, T regulatory cells were significantly decreased. These findings demonstrate that bone-marrow-derived MSCs are effective in improving PLT levels and reducing the T regulatory cells mediating proinflammatory response in ITP mice.
