RESUMO

Wetting films can develop in the corners of pore structures during imbibition in a strongly wetting porous medium, which may significantly influence the two-phase flow dynamics. Due to the large difference in scales between main meniscus and corner film, accurate and efficient modeling of the dynamics of corner film remains elusive. In this work, we develop a novel two-pressure dynamic pore network model incorporating the interacting capillary bundle model to analyze the competition between the main meniscus and corner film flow in real porous media. A pore network with four-point star-shaped pore bodies and throat bonds is extracted from the real porous medium based on the pore shape factor and pore cross-sectional area, which is then decomposed into several layers of sub-pore networks, where the first layer of sub-pore network simulates the main meniscus flow while the upper layers characterize the corner film flow. The two-phase flow conductance of throat bonds for different layers of sub-pore networks are determined by high-resolution two-phase lattice Boltzmann modeling, thus inherently considering the viscous coupling effect. In addition, two artificial neural network models are developed to predict the two phases' flow conductance based on the shape of the throat cross section and the fluid properties. The accuracy of the developed model is validated with a lattice Boltzmann simulation of imbibition in a strongly wetting square tube. Then the model is used to simulate imbibition in a strongly wetting sandstone porous medium, and the competition between the main meniscus and the corner film flow is analyzed. The results show that with decreasing capillary number and viscosity ratio between wetting and nonwetting fluids, the development of the wetting corner film becomes more significant.

BACKGROUND: Few reports have focused on the association between apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aTRH) and cardiovascular (CV) mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) population, thus we conducted this retrospective cohort to explore it.Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted from January 2011 to January 2020 with PD patients in 4 Chinese dialysis centers. ATRH was defined according to the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association guidelines. ATRH duration was calculated as the total number of months when patients met the diagnostic criteria in the first PD year. The primary outcome was CV mortality, and the secondary outcomes were CV events, all-cause mortality, combined endpoint (all-cause mortality and transferred to HD), and PD withdrawal (all-cause mortality, transferred to HD and kidney transplantation). Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association. RESULTS: A total of 1,422 patients were finally included in the analysis. During a median follow-up period of 26 months, 83 (5.8%) PD patients incurred CV mortality. The prevalence of aTRH was 24.1%, 19.9%, 24.6% at 0, 3, 12 months after PD initiation respectively. Overall, aTRH duration in the first PD year positively associated with CV mortality (per 3 months increment, adjusted HR, 1.29; 95% CI 1.10, 1.53; P=0.002). After categorized, those with aTRH duration more than 6 months presented the highest adjusted HR of 2.92. Similar results were found for secondary outcomes, except for the CV event. CONCLUSION: Longer aTRH duration in the first PD year is associated with higher CV mortality and worse long-term clinical outcomes. Larger studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

To improve the quality of products produced from microforming, various nanolubricants have been applied in the field of micromanufacturing in recent years. In this paper, the effects of glycerol-based lubricant containing TiO2 NPs (NPs) on micro deep drawing (MDD) of austenitic stainless steel (ASS) SUS301 were studied, and the lubrication mechanism involved was discussed. The MDD experiments were conducted with the SUS301 foils under dry, 1, 2, and 4 wt% TiO2 NP lubrication conditions. The results show that the use of the TiO2 nanolubricants can significantly improve the quality of the drawn cups in terms of decreased wrinkling and surface roughness. Besides, the concentration of TiO2 NPs influences lubricity by reducing friction during the MDD process. The peak drawing force is the lowest when 2 wt% nanolubricant is applied, which drops to 72.54 N from 77.38 N under dry conditions. The micro cup drawn under 2 wt% TiO2 nanolubricant has the best quality among those obtained under all the lubrication conditions. The lubrication mechanisms are derived from the mending effects of TiO2 NPs and the formation of thin lubricant films associated with the open lubricant pockets (OLPs) and close lubricant pocket (CLPs) theory in the MDD. The CLPs function as reservoirs that retain lubricants to counteract the load pressure, whereas the OLPs lead to lubricant leakage due to the higher flow resistance. It was found that the lubricant film and NPs are insufficient at a low concentration (1 wt%), while the lubrication performance can be enhanced with increased NP concentration. However, there exist apparent agglomerations on the surface of the produced micro cup when using 4 wt% nanolubricant, which greatly deteriorates the lubricant performance in the MDD process. It is concluded that the lubricant containing 2 wt% TiO2 NPs demonstrates the best lubrication performance during the MDD of ASS SUS301.

Apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aTRH) is the most commonly used term to report resistant hypertension (RH) and is considered as a common problem in dialysis population. However, few reports have focused on peritoneal dialysis (PD) hypertensive patients. The authors conducted a multi-center cross-sectional study involving 1789 PD patients from nine centers in Guangdong, China. The prevalence of aTRH was estimated by home blood pressure (BP) monitoring. Evaluating drug adherence through Eight-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) and pill counting was performed to assess RH in one PD center. Related factors of aTRH were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of aTRH in PD patients was estimated at 42.2% (755 out of 1789 hypertensive patients) based on home BP. Of those, 91.4% patients were classified as uncontrolled RH, 2.0% as controlled RH, and 6.6% as refractory hypertension. The prevalence of RH was 40.6% and 41.9% among those with medium/high adherence based on the MMAS-8 scores and the pill counting rate, respectively. PD patients who were younger, with higher body mass index, with lower serum albumin and poorer dialysis adequacy were significantly associated with higher aTRH incident. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates a high prevalence of aTRH in PD population, which occurs in about two in five treated hypertensive patients. Nutritional status and dialysis adequacy might tightly associate with aTRH.

Conformational change of cytochrome c (cyt c) caused by interaction with cardiolipin (CL) is an important step during apoptosis, but the underlying mechanism is controversial. To comprehensively clarify the structural transformations of cyt c upon interaction with CL and avoid the unpredictable alias that might come from protein labeling or mutations, the conformation of purified yeast iso-1 cyt c with natural isotopic abundance in different contents of CL was measured by using NMR spectroscopy, in which the trimethylated group of the protein was used as a natural probe. The data demonstrate that cyt c has two partially unfolded conformations when interacted with CL: one with Fe-His33 coordination and the other with a penta-coordination heme. The Fe-His33 coordination conformation can be converted into a penta-coordination heme conformation in high content of CL. The structure of cyt c becomes partially unfolded with more exposed heme upon interaction with CL, suggesting that cyt c prefers a high peroxidase activity state in the mitochondria, which, in turn, makes CL easy to be oxidized, and causes the release of cyt c into the cytoplasm as a trigger in apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Hypokalemia (LK) was associated with peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, while the role of its degree and duration have not been fully established. Here, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to identify the relationships of LK degree and duration with peritonitis in PD patients. METHODS: A total of 602 PD patients in our department from Jan 1st, 2009 to Dec 31st, 2019 entered the last analysis. Data were collected from their medical records. Serum potassium (SK) levels, degree of hypokalemia, and duration of hypokalemia were analysed with peritonitis. The time association of hypokalemia and peritonitis was also analysed. RESULTS: There were totally 320 (53.7%) and 123 (20.7%) patients who had ever suffered from LK and serious hypokalemia (SLK) in the cohort. Only 6.82% and 0.5% of patients had LK and SLK at baseline, while the incidence increased and kept in 25%-32% and 5.5%-8.2% after PD. Both LK (HR 1.437, 95% CI 1.014-2.038, P = .042) and SLK (HR 2.021, 95% CI 1.429-2.857, P < .001) did correlate to peritonitis after adjusted analyses, while only SLK remained the significance at each follow-up point. The LK/SLK durations were 6 (3-12) and 6 (3-6) months, and only longer SLK duration correlated with peritonitis after adjusted analyses. After categorised, those LK durations more than 6 months and SLK durations more than 3 months presented a significant association with peritonitis. Of the patients who suffered from both hypokalemia and peritonitis, 70.4% patients' LK times were earlier than peritonitis time, while most SLK times (62.7%) were later. SLK also correlated with combined endpoint. CONCLUSIONS: Hypokalemia degree and duration were tightly associated with peritonitis. Hypokalemia might be a causal factor of peritonitis, while peritonitis might also aggravate hypokalemia. We should manage SK as much as possible and avoid hypokalemia, especially serious hypokalemia in clinic practice.

An oxygen-constrained system of crude oil reservoir environment was constructed to stimulate the growth of indigenous microbes, such as petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. Addition of nitrogen and phosphorus sources was investigated for the growth of petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The results show that nitrates and phosphates stimulated the growth of the bacteria and promoted the biodegradation of crude oil as the sole carbon source in this process. The minimum surface tension was 29.63 mN/m when the amounts of the nitrogen (NaNO3: [Formula: see text]  = 2:1) and phosphorus (KH2PO4: NaH2PO4 = 5:2) sources added were 0.8 wt% and 1.4 wt%, respectively. Furthermore, the dominant petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were shifted from Arcobacter in production water to Pseudomonas after the first subculture and then to Bacillus after the sixth subculture. The heteroatom groups in the crude oil were biodegraded simultaneously with normal alkanes and alkyl cyclohexanes. Addition of the nutrients resulted in microbial growth, microbial community shift, and enhanced microbial degradation.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease has caused heavy health care burdens in many countries, and hypertension (HTN) is a well-known independent cardiovascular risk factor. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of empowerment strategies that affect systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body mass index (BMI), quality of life, and self-management behaviours for patients with hypertension. METHODS: A literature search of the Cochrane Library, PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and several Chinese medical databases was performed. Study screening, quality assessment, data extraction, and meta-analysis were conducted according to Cochrane standards. RESULTS: Eleven randomised controlled trials with 988 subjects were identified. Relative to control groups, the empowerment strategies showed significant decreases in SBP (the mean difference [MD] = 9.46, 95 % confidence interval [CI] = 6.36-12.55, p <  0.00001) and DBP (MD = 6.68, 95 % CI = 3.07-10.29, p =  0.0003). However, no significant difference was found in BMI (p = 0.05). Subgroup analysis showed significant differences in the improvement of both SBP and DBP among the various groups, regardless of the duration and type of interventions. DISCUSSION: Empowerment strategies can decrease both SBP and DBP in hypertension patients. However, its influence on patients' BMI, quality of life, and self-management behaviour remains unclear. PRACTICAL VALUE: Empowerment strategies are useful for controlling the blood pressure of hypertension patients.

Zinc removal from basic oxygen steelmaking filter cake was studied by tablet testing and in a millipot under different conditions. The results from tablet testing show that coke and metallic iron in filter cake play the role of reductants to remove zinc during sintering. Zinc removal increased with increasing temperature and decreasing partial pressure of oxygen. Zinc removal reached 24.6% when a tablet of filter cake without addition of coke was sintered at 1300 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere. Addition of 3 to 9 wt% of coke breeze into filter cake enhanced the zinc removal to 60.6 to 91.4%, in an atmosphere with 0.5 vol% oxygen. The results from millipot sintering show that adding filter cake in the form of tablets was effective in removing zinc, especially when additional coke was added into the tableted filter cake. Zinc vapour generated at high temperature in the reducing atmosphere diffused out of the tablets and was carried with flowing gas, and then re-oxidized and deposited on the lower layer of sintering material in the bed. Positioning the filter cake in the form of tablets at the bottom of the sinter bed is therefore suggested as a possibility for zinc removal from filter cake.

Phenylenevinylene terpyridine (mepvpt) shows chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) with Cd(II) and chelation quenched fluorescence (CHQF) with Zn(II), respectively. To understand the behaviors, we studied their intrinsic optical properties using DFT/TDDFT methods. The results show that fluorescence quantum yields (FQY) of mepvpt, mepvpt-Cd and mepvpt-Zn are low due to high ISC rates from higher excited states rather than the S1 excited state. When mepvpt chelates Cd(II), the molecular structure becomes more planar and S3,4 → S0 radiation rates become higher than that of mepvpt, which results in CHEF. When mepvpt chelates Zn(II), a new S4 → S0 emission with low oscillator strength occurs and high S4 → Tn ISC rates appear, which leads to CHQF. This proposed mechanism of metal fluorescence enhancing/quenching suggests a design strategy for single-molecular multi-analyte sensors.

Crocetin is the main component of saffron and exhibits anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress have been recognized to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of neuropathic pain. We investigated the effect of crocetin in a mouse model with neuropathic pain induced by spared nerve injury (SNI). Crocetin was intrathecally perfused at various doses for up to 12 days starting 3 days before the surgery. Behavioral tests were performed to determine pain sensitivity. The concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) were measured to assess neuroinflammation. In addition, the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was measured to reveal the oxidative stress level. We found that repeated treatment with crocetin dose-dependently attenuated mechanical and thermal allodynia in SNI mice. In addition, treatment with high dose of crocetin reduced SNI-induced increase of TNF-α and IL-1ß. Crocetin also restored the activity of mitochondrial MnSOD which was reduced in the sciatic nerve and the spinal cord of SNI mice. Collectively, our data demonstrate that crocetin effectively attenuates the neuropathic pain and significantly suppresses oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in the SNI mouse model, supporting the potential of crocetin in the treatment against neuropathic pain.

Tight gas is one important unconventional hydrocarbon resource that is stored in tight sandstone, whose mechanical property greatly influences the tight gas production process and is commonly believed to be simply elastic when designing the stimulation plan. However, the experimental evidence provided in this work surprisingly shows that tight sandstone can deform in a viscoelastic way. Such an unexpected observation poses a challenge in accurately modelling the deformation process. We solve this problem by adopting the fractional Maxwell model to successfully derive the constitutive equation of tight sandstone, based on which not only all the experimental data can be interpreted quantitatively, but also reasonable and consistent predictions as to tight sandstone's long-term deformation behaviour can be made. We then investigate the typicality of our results in China's Changqing oilfield, which is one major centre of tight gas production and where the rock samples for experiments are obtained. It is estimated that a non-negligible portion of 18% tight sandstone samples in this area will probably display viscoelasticity. Finally, our work implies that the mechanical properties of other materials may also need further scrutiny to possibly uncover any unexpected behaviour, overlooking which may result in misleading predictions.

The performance of a laboratory-scale, high-efficiency denitrification bioreactor (15L) using activated sludge immobilized by waterborne polyurethane in treating acrylonitrile wastewater with high concentration of nitrate nitrogen (249mg/L) was investigated. The bioreactor was operated at 30°C for 220days. Batch denitrification experiments showed that the optimal operation parameters were C/NO3--N molar ratio of 2.0 using sodium acetate as electron donor and carrier filling rate of 20% (V/V) in the bioreactor. Stable performance of denitrification was observed with a hydraulic retention time of 30 to 38h. A volumetric removal rate up to 2.1kgN/m3·d was achieved with a total nitrogen removal efficiency of 95%. Pyrosequencing results showed that Rhodocyclaceae and Pseudomonadaceae were the dominant bacterial families in the immobilized carrier and bioreactor effluent. The overall microbial diversity declined as denitrifiers gradually dominated and the relative abundance of other bacteria decreased along with testing time.

Biosurfactant producers are crucial for incremental oil production in microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) processes. The isolation of biosurfactant-producing bacteria from oil reservoirs is important because they are considered suitable for the extreme conditions of the reservoir. In this work, a novel biosurfactant-producing strain Acinetobacter junii BD was isolated from a reservoir to reduce surface tension and emulsify crude oil. The biosurfactants produced by the strain were purified and then identified via electrospray ionization-Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR-MS). The biosurfactants generated by the strain were concluded to be rhamnolipids, the dominant rhamnolipids were C26H48O9, C28H52O9, and C32H58O13. The optimal carbon source and nitrogen source for biomass and biosurfactant production were NaNO3 and soybean oil. The results showed that the content of acid components increased with the progress of crude oil biodegradation. A glass micromodel test demonstrated that the strain significantly increased oil recovery through interfacial tension reduction, wettability alteration and the mobility of microorganisms. In summary, the findings of this study indicate that the newly developed BD strain and its metabolites have great potential in MEOR.

The community diversities of two oil reservoirs with low permeability of 1.81 × 10(-3) and 2.29 × 10(-3) µm(2) in Changqing, China, were investigated using a high throughput sequencing technique to analyze the influence of biostimulation with a nutrient activator on the bacterial communities. These two blocks differed significantly in salinity (average 17,500 vs 40,900 mg/L). A core simulation test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous microbial-enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). The results indicated that in the two high salinity oil reservoirs, one reservoir having relatively lower salinity level and a narrow salinity range had higher bacterial and phylogenetic diversity. The addition of the nutrient activator increased the diversity of the bacterial community structure and the diversity differences between the two blocks. The results of the core simulation test showed that the bacterial community in the reservoir with a salinity level of 17,500 mg/L did not show significant higher MEOR efficiency compared with the reservoir with 40,900 mg/L i.e. MEOR efficiency of 8.12% vs 6.56% (test p = 0.291 > 0.05). Therefore, salinity levels affected the bacterial diversities in the two low permeability oil blocks remarkably. But the influence of salinity for the MEOR recovery was slightly.

Heavy oil-produced water (HOPW) is a by-product during heavy oil exploitation and can cause serious environmental pollution if discharged without adequate treatment. Commercial biochemical treatment units are important parts of HOPW treatment processes, but many are not in stable operation because of the toxic and refractory substances, salt, present. Therefore, pilot-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of hydrolytic acidification-biological filter with airlift aeration (HA-BFAA), a novel HOPW treatment system. Four strains isolated from oily sludge were used for bioaugmentation to enhance the biodegradation of organic pollutants. The isolated bacteria were evaluated using 3-day biochemical oxygen demand, oil, dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removals as evaluation indices. Bioaugmentation enhanced the COD removal by 43.5 mg/L under a volume load of 0.249 kg COD/m(3) day and hydraulic retention time of 33.6 h. The effluent COD was 70.9 mg/L and the corresponding COD removal was 75.0 %. The optimum volumetric air-to-water ratio was below 10. The removal ratios of the total extractable organic pollutants, alkanes, and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons were 71.1, 94.4, and 94.0 %, respectively. Results demonstrated that HA-BFAA was an excellent HOPW treatment system.

BACKGROUND: The Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) questionnaire is one of the most commonly used scales to evaluate functional status and quality of life (QOL) of patients with a broad range of musculoskeletal disorders. However, a Chinese version of the SMFA questionnaire for the psychometric properties of skeletal muscle injury patients in China is still lacking. The current study translated the SMFA into Chinese and assessed its reliability and validity among Chinese patients with skeletal muscle injury of the upper or lower extremities. METHODS: The original SMFA was translated from English into Chinese and culturally adapted according to cross-cultural adaptation guidelines. A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted, comprising 339 skeletal muscle injury patients (aged 20-75 years) from 4 hospitals. The SMFA, the health survey short form (SF-36) along with a region-specific questionnaire (including the disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand questionnaire (DASH), the hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score (HOOS), the knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (KOOS), and the foot function index (FFI)) were completed according to the region of injury. Reliability was estimated from the internal consistency using Cronbach's α and validity was assessed via convergent validity, known-groups comparison, and construct validity. RESULTS: Cronbach's α coefficient was over 0.75 for two subscales and four categories of the SMFA, suggesting that the internal consistency reliability of the SMFA was satisfactory. Known-groups comparison showed that the dysfunction index and the bother index of the SMFA discriminated well between patients who differed in age, gender, injury location, and operation status rather than in subgroups based on the body mass index (BMI). The convergent validity of the SMFA was good, as moderate to excellent correlations were found between the subscales of the SMFA and the four subscales of SF-36 (physical function, role-physical, bodily pain, and social functioning) and the region-specific questionnaires. The construct validity was proved by the presence of a six-factor structure that accounted for 66.85 % of the variance. CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of the SMFA questionnaire is a reliable and valid instrument to measure patient-reported impact of musculoskeletal injuries in the upper or lower extremities.

This paper investigated the enhancement of the COD reduction of an oilfield wastewater treatment process by installing air-lift tubes and adding an activated carbon bioreactor (ACB) to form a combined hydrolysis acidification and bio-contact oxidation system with air-lift tubes (HA/air-lift BCO) and an ACB. Three heat-resistant bacterial strains were cultivated and subsequently applied in above pilot plant test. Installing air-lift tubes in aerobic tanks reduced the necessary air to water ratio from 20 to 5. Continuous operation of the HA/air-lift BCO system for 2 months with a hydraulic retention time of 36 h, a volumetric load of 0.14 kg COD/(m(3)d) (hydrolysis-acidification or anaerobic tank), and 0.06 kg COD/(m(3)d) (aerobic tanks) achieved an average reduction of COD by 60%, oil and grease by 62%, total suspended solids by 75%, and sulfides by 77%. With a COD load of 0.56 kg/(m(3)d), the average COD in the ACB effluent was 58 mg/L.

The diversity of indigenous bacterial community and the functional species in the water samples from three production wells of a low permeability oil reservoir was investigated by high-throughput sequencing technology. The potential of application of indigenous bacteria for enhancing oil recovery was evaluated by examination of the effect of bacterial stimulation on the formation water-oil-rock surface interactions and micromodel test. The results showed that production well 88-122 had the most diverse bacterial community and functional species. The broth of indigenous bacteria stimulated by an organic nutrient activator at aerobic condition changed the wettability of the rock surface from oil-wet to water-wet. Micromodel test results showed that flooding using stimulated indigenous bacteria following water flooding improved oil recovery by 6.9% and 7.7% in fractured and unfractured micromodels, respectively. Therefore, the zone of low permeability reservoir has a great potential for indigenous microbial enhanced oil recovery.
