RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear if adherence to the planetary healthy diet (PHD), designed to improve human and environmental health, is associated with better cognitive function in aging, and if this association differs by apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the association between the PHD pattern and risk of poor cognitive function, and to further assess whether the APOE ε4 allele could modify this association. METHODS: The study included 16,736 participants from the Singapore Chinese Health Study. The PHD score was calculated using data from a validated 165-item food frequency questionnaire at baseline (1993-1998), with higher scores indicating greater adherence to the PHD. Cognitive function was assessed by the Singapore-modified Mini-Mental State Examination at follow-up 3 visits (2014-2016). A subset of 9313 participants had APOE genotype data. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS: We identified 2397 (14.3%) cases of poor cognitive function. In the total population, OR (95% CI) of poor cognitive function for each one-SD increment in the PHD score was 0.89 (0.85, 0.93). Carriers of APOE ε4 allele had increased risk of poor cognitive function (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.15, 1.61). There was a significant interaction between the PHD score and the APOE ε4 allele (P-interaction = 0.042). Each one-SD increment in the PHD score was significantly associated with lower risk of poor cognitive function (OR: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.96) in non-carriers of APOE ε4 allele, but not in APOE ε4 allele carriers (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 0.89, 1.23). CONCLUSIONS: Midlife adherence to the PHD was associated with reduced risk of poor cognitive function in later life. However, this was not observed in carriers of APOE ε4 allele who had higher risk of poor cognitive function.

RESUMO

Background: Evidence regarding the association between metabolism-related indicators and serum urate (SU) is limited. We aimed to obtain the incidence density of hyperuricemia and to explore the association between metabolism-related predisposing risk factors and SU. Methods: A total of 48,979 Chinese adults from the Beijing Physical Examination Center were included in the study. The partial least squares path model was used to explore the relationship between SU and metabolism-related risk factors. The generalized additive model was used for smooth curve fitting, showing the sex-specific associations of SU at follow-up with baseline fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations and age. Results: The incidence density of hyperuricemia was 78/1000 person-years. Baseline SU, age, sex, obesity, FBG, and lipid metabolism were significantly associated with SU at follow-up (all P values <0.05). Non-linear relationships were found between the baseline FBG concentrations and SU at follow-up, while U-shaped associations were observed between baseline age and SU at follow-up. Conclusions: The SU concentration is associated with several metabolism-related risk factors such as obesity and FBG. Recognition of these associations will aid in a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of SU regulation.

RESUMO

What is already known about this topic?: Red and processed meat consumption has been positively related to an increased risk of diabetes in Western populations. However, the results remain inconclusive within Asian populations. What is added by this report?: This dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies conducted in East Asian populations reveals a positive relation between the consumption of processed meat and increased risk of diabetes. Furthermore, a U-shaped association was identified between the consumption of unprocessed red meat and the risk of diabetes. What are the implications for public health practice?: This research presents substantive evidence advocating for the reduction of processed and unprocessed red meat consumption as a viable strategy for mitigating the risk of diabetes in East Asian populations.

RESUMO

Importance: Although the EAT-Lancet Commission has recently proposed a planetary health diet (PHD) to promote human and environmental health, little is known about how PHD affects environment and mortality risk among an Asian population. Objective: To investigate whether a PHD score is associated with environmental impacts and mortality outcomes in a Chinese cohort living in Singapore. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study used data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study. Eligible participants were without known cardiovascular disease and cancer at baseline; they were recruited between 1993 and 1998 and followed up using record linkage data until 2020. Data were analyzed from September 2022 to April 2023. Exposures: PHD score was calculated based on the reference consumption of 14 dietary components in PHD and individual energy intake assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire in this cohort. Main Outcomes and Measures: Diet-related environmental impacts were estimated using a food frequency questionnaire. Mortality outcomes (all-cause, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory disease) were identified via linkage with a nationwide registry. Results: A total of 57 078 participants were included in this study (mean [SD] age, 56.1 (7.9) years; 31 958 women [56.0%]). During a median (IQR) follow-up of 23.4 (18.7-26.2) years, 22 599 deaths occurred. Comparing the highest and lowest quintiles, higher PHD scores were associated with lower greenhouse gas emissions (ß = -0.13 kg CO2 equivalent; 95% CI, -0.14 to -0.12 kg CO2 equivalent), but with higher total water footprint (ß = 0.12 m3; 95% CI, 0.11-0.13 m3) and land use (ß = 0.29 m2; 95% CI, 0.28-0.31 m2). In the adjusted multivariable model, compared with the lowest quintile, participants in the highest quintile of PHD score had lower risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.85; 95% CI, 0.81-0.89), cardiovascular disease mortality (HR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.73-0.85), cancer mortality (HR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.86-1.00), and respiratory disease mortality (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.74-0.89). Conclusions and Relevance: In this study of Singapore Chinese adults, higher adherence to PHD was associated with reduced risk of chronic disease mortality. However, environmental impacts were uncertain, as higher adherence was associated with lower greenhouse gas emissions but higher total water footprint and land use.

RESUMO

The photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde by graphite-like C3N4 is one of the most attractive and environmentally friendly strategies to address the significant threat to human health posed by indoor air pollutants. Despite its potential, this degradation process still faces issues with suboptimal efficiency, which may be attributed to the rapid recombination of photogenerated excitons and the broad band gap. As a proof of concept, a series of graphite-like C3N4@C60 composites combining graphite-like C3N4 and C60 was developed via an in situ generation strategy. The obtained graphite-like C3N4@C60 composites exhibited a remarkable increase in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of formaldehyde, of up to 99%, under visible light irradiation, outperforming pure graphite-like C3N4 and C60. This may be due to the composites' enhanced built-in electric field. Additionally, the proposed composites maintained a formaldehyde removal efficiency of 84% even after six cycles, highlighting their potential for indoor air purification and paving the way for the development of efficient photocatalysts.

RESUMO

Importance: Adherence to a healthy lifestyle is associated with lower risks of adverse outcomes. However, trends in multiple lifestyle factors and overall healthy lifestyle status among US adults in recent years are unknown. Objective: To examine trends in multiple lifestyle factors and overall healthy lifestyle among US adults. Design, Setting, and Participants: This serial cross-sectional study used nationally representative data from 10 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles (nine 2-year cycles from 1999 to 2016 and 1 combined cycle from 2017 to March 2020) among adults 20 years or older. Data were analyzed from December 10, 2021, to January 11, 2023. Exposure: Survey cycle. Main Outcomes and Measures: Five healthy lifestyle factors: never smoking, moderate or lighter alcohol consumption (for women: ≤7 drinks/wk; for men: ≤14 drinks/wk), healthy diet (Healthy Eating Index-2015 scores ≥60.0), sufficient physical activity (≥150 min/wk of equivalent moderate physical activity), and healthy weight (body mass index [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared] 18.5-24.9). Results: A total of 47 852 adults were included in this study. The weighted mean [SE] age was 47.3 [0.2] years; 24 539 (weighted proportion, 51.5%) were women. From the 1999-2000 cycle to the 2017 to March 2020 cycle, the estimated prevalence of the 5 lifestyle factors showed divergent trends, with increasing prevalence of never smoking (from 49.4% [95% CI, 46.4%-52.4%] to 57.7% [95% CI, 55.5%-59.9%]; difference, 8.2% [95% CI, 4.5%-12.0%]), healthy diet (from 19.3% [95% CI, 16.0%-22.6%] to 24.5% [95% CI, 21.5%-27.5%]; difference, 5.2% [95% CI, 0.8%-9.7%]), and sufficient physical activity (from 55.7% [95% CI, 51.8%-59.6%] to 69.1% [95% CI, 67.2%-71.1%]; difference, 13.4% [95% CI, 9.0%-17.8%]), while prevalence of healthy weight decreased from 33.1% (95% CI, 30.5%-35.6%) to 24.6% (95% CI, 22.6%-26.7%; difference, -8.4% [95% CI, -11.8% to -5.1%]) (all P < .001 for trend). Meanwhile, there was no significant trend in moderate or lighter alcohol consumption. Overall, the estimated prevalence of at least 4 healthy lifestyle factors increased from 15.7% (95% CI, 12.8%-18.7%) to 20.3% (95% CI, 17.8%-22.7%; difference, 4.5% [95% CI, 0.7%-8.4%]; P < .001 for trend). Disparities in healthy lifestyle were widened by age group, with little improvement among adults 65 years and older (difference, 0.04% [95% CI, -4.28% to 4.35%]). There were persistent disparities in healthy lifestyle by race and ethnicity, educational level, and income level. Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this cross-sectional study of NHANES data over a 22-year period suggest diverse change patterns across 5 healthy lifestyle factors and a modest improvement in overall lifestyle existed among US adults, with worsening or persistent disparities in lifestyle.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of a combined healthy lifestyle in early pregnancy with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk. DESIGN, SETTING AND POPULATION: A Chinese prospective cohort study with 6980 pregnant women. METHODS: Individual modifiable lifestyle factors were assessed in early pregnancy and a combined lifestyle score was derived from the sum of the lifestyle factors, with a higher score indicating a healthier lifestyle. The association of a combined healthy lifestyle with GDM risk was examined. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Gestational diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in middle pregnancy according to the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Group criteria or diagnoses in medical records. RESULTS: Overall, 501 (7.2%) pregnant women were diagnosed with GDM. Being physically active (total energy expenditure in upper three quintiles, i.e. ≥100.1 metabolic equivalent of task [MET]-hours/week; odds ratio [OR] 0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.63-0.92), healthy diet (total intake of vegetables and fruits ≥5 times/day; OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.59-0.94), sufficient sleep (night-time sleep duration ≥7 hours/night; OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.48-0.90) and healthy weight (early-pregnancy BMI <24.0 kg/m2 ; OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.46-0.71) were associated with lower GDM risk. The GDM risk decreased linearly across the combined lifestyle score (Ptrend <0.001): women with 2, 3 and 4 lifestyle factors compared with those with 0-1 factor had 38% (OR 0.62, 95% CI 0.46-0.84), 57% (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.31-0.58) and 66% (OR 0.34, 95% CI 0.22-0.52) lower risks of GDM, respectively. CONCLUSION: A healthy lifestyle in early pregnancy was associated with a substantially lower GDM risk.

RESUMO

Wood-based panels provide efficient alternatives to materials such as plastics derived from traditional petroleum sources and thereby help to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, using indoor manufactured panel products also results in significant emissions of volatile organic compounds including olefins, aromatic and ester compounds, which negatively affect human health. This paper highlights recent developments and notable achievements in the field of indoor hazardous air treatment technologies to guide future research toward environmentally friendly and economically feasible directions that may have a significant impact on the improvement of human settlements. Summarizing and synthesizing the principles, advantages, and limitations of different technologies can assist policymakers and engineers in identifying the most appropriate technology for a particular air pollution control program based on criteria such as cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and environmental impact. In addition, insights into the development of indoor air pollution control technologies are provided and potential areas for innovation, improvement of existing technologies, and development of new technologies are identified. Finally, the authors also hope that this sub-paper will raise public awareness of indoor air pollution issues and promote a better understanding of the importance of indoor air pollution control technologies for public health, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

RESUMO

The preparation of biocomposites from renewable and sustainable forestry residues is an effective method to significantly reduce the environmental pollution caused by synthetic materials such as plastics and synthetic fibers. This study is aimed at developing a clean process for the large-scale production of high-performance green biocomposites without involving any chemical adhesive. Adhesive-free biocomposites with superior mechanical properties were prepared using HCl ball milling pretreatment and in situ synthesis. The nano-Fe3O4 was uniformly dispersed in the cellulose matrix, and when the matrix was subjected to external forces, the stress concentration effect around the particles absorbed energy, thus effectively improving the mechanical strength of the matrix. The flexural strength and tensile strength of BWP(Fe3O4) samples were increased by 159.04 and 175.34%, compared to that of regular wood powder control samples. The lignin melts under high temperature and pressure and then forms a carbonized layer on the surface of the biocomposites during the cooling process, which prevents the rapid penetration of water from the surface and also gives the biocomposites good thermal stability. The results of this research can avoid the harmful volatiles generated by chemical adhesive than that of the traditional fiberboard process and effectively replace petroleum-based synthetic materials prepared using the addition of various chemical additives, making it conform to the concept of environmental protection and sustainability.

RESUMO

Traditional wood-based panels are usually made from large-diameter trees and rely on adhesives for compactness, which negatively impacts the environment and human health. However, the widely distributed small-diameter shrubs are good raw materials for wood-based panels with abundant fibers, but are often under-exploited. This research reports the preparation of self-bonding biocomposites from Buxus sinica by an innovative combined approach of extraction, alkali treatment, and hot molding. The resulted biocomposites show better mechanical properties in which the flexural modulus (7.79 GPa) and the tensile modulus (4.33 GPa) were 5 times and 1.7 times higher than the conventional fiberboard, respectively, and also demonstrated better hydrophobicity than fiberboard, which could be due to the layer of lignin that formed on its surface preventing the infiltration of water. To sum up, the biocomposites prepared from small-diameter shrubs meet the requirement of the furniture and architectural decoration materials, suggesting that the proposed approach can be used to produce high-performance biocomposites.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and mortality among patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and mortality among individuals with MAFLD/NAFLD. METHODS: The study included 4651 individuals with fatty liver disease (FLD; 3964 had MAFLD and 3968 had NAFLD) from NHANES III. Fatty liver disease was identified by ultrasonographic detection of hepatic steatosis. Mortality was ascertained by linkage to the National Death Index up to 31 December 2019. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the HRs and 95% CIs, with adjustment of potential confounders. RESULTS: Of 4651 individuals with FLD, 3427 individuals (69.7%) had both MAFLD and NAFLD. During median follow-ups of 25.8 and 26.1 y, we identified 1809 and 1665 deaths among 3964 participants with MAFLD and 3968 participants with NAFLD, respectively. Compared with participants with serum 25(OH)D concentrations ≤30.0 nmol/L, the multivariable-adjusted HRs and 95% CIs of all-cause mortality were 0.62 (0.43, 0.89) for participants with MAFLD having serum 25(OH)D >75.0 nmol/L (P-trend = 0.001) and 0.63 (0.42, 0.95) for participants with NAFLD having serum 25(OH)D >75.0 nmol/L (P-trend = 0.002). A nonlinear inverse association was observed between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and all-cause mortality among participants with MAFLD (Poverall < 0.001; Pnonlinear = 0.003) or NAFLD (Poverall < 0.001; Pnonlinear = 0.009), with a threshold effect at ∼50.0 nmol/L. The inverse association was stronger among participants with MAFLD aged <60 y (P-interaction = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested a nonlinear inverse association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and all-cause mortality among patients with MAFLD/NAFLD, with a threshold effect at ∼50.0 nmol/L of serum 25(OH)D.

RESUMO

AIMS: To quantify associations of different metrics of long-term glycemic variability (GV) with multiple adverse diabetes-related outcomes. METHODS: We searched PubMed and Embase from database inception to 23 August 2021. GV was based on measurements of HbA1c or fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and calculated by standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variance (CV) or other metrics. Outcomes included mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD), renal disease, peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, dementia and cancer. Random-effects meta-analyses were adopted to pool the relative risks (RRs). RESULTS: Seventy-five articles with 2,051,701 participants were included. When comparing top with bottom quartiles, HbA1c variabilities were associated with all-cause mortality (RRCV = 1.63, 95 % CI 1.37-1.92; RRSD = 1.87, 1.55-2.26), CVD (RRCV = 1.38, 1.07-1.78; RRSD = 1.34, 1.12-1.59), renal disease (RRCV = 1.43, 1.18-1.74; RRSD = 1.44, 1.24-1.67), and peripheral neuropathy (RRCV = 1.84, 1.40-2.43; RRSD = 1.98, 1.51-2.61), but not retinopathy. FPG variabilities were associated with all-cause mortality (RRCV = 1.59, 1.43-1.78; RRSD = 1.67, 1.26-2.20), renal disease (RRCV = 1.77, 1.32-2.38), and retinopathy (RRCV = 1.92, 1.10-3.35), but not CVD and peripheral neuropathy. Associations of GV with Alzheimer's disease (RRHbA1c-CV = 1.38, 1.13-1.70; RRFPG-CV = 1.32, 1.07-1.63) and cancer (RRHbA1c-SD = 2.19, 1.52-3.17; RRFPG-CV = 3.64, 2.21-5.98) were each found significant in one study. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term GV was associated with multiple adverse diabetes-related outcomes, while the strength of associations varied. The findings support the use of long-term GV for diabetes management in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Cellulose has attracted considerable attention as the most promising potential candidate raw material for the production of bio-based polymeric materials. In the last decade, significant progress has been made in the production of biopolymers based on different cellulose forms. In this study, cellulose was obtained in an innovative and environmentally friendly way, using boxwood powder. Crude cellulose was obtained by treating Buxus powder with an ethanol-acetic acid-water mixture. Refined cellulose was then obtained by treatment with an acidic sodium hypochlorite solution and alkaline hydrogen peroxide solution. The novel chemistry of cellulose prepared by this method promises to be not only green, but also highly desirable, because of its lower emissions and low cost. It is crucial for the future of the global polymer industry. The refined cellulose was subjected to a high-temperature hydrothermal treatment under two temperatures and time conditions, with temperature gradients of 120, 140, and 160 °C, and time gradients of 1, 2, and 3 h. The samples were subjected to infrared and thermogravimetric analyses. The cellulose undergoes dehydration and thermal degradation reactions during the heat treatment process, and the thermal stability of the residual is enhanced, compared with that of virgin cellulose. Between 120 and 140 °C, the hydroxyl and hypomethyl groups on the surface of cellulose are shed. Groups in the amorphous region of the polymer are the first to be shed. The dehydration reaction reduces the number of free hydroxyl groups on the surface of the cellulose molecules. The dehydration reaction was accelerated by an increase in temperature. Between 140 and 160 °C, the ß-(1,4)-glycosidic bond begins to slowly break and some furans are generated. The structure of cellulose undergoes reorganization during thermal treatment. The thermal stability of the modified material is greater than that of untreated cellulose.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between the ideal cardiovascular health metrics (ICVHMs) and the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) among people aged 50 years or older. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: The UK Biobank, a prospective cohort of middle-aged participants recruited between 2006 and 2010. PARTICIPANTS: The study included 342 226 participants from the UK Biobank aged 50 years or older without prevalent cancer. EXPOSURE: The ICVHMs consist of four behavioural factors (abstinence from smoking, ideal body mass index (BMI), physical activity at goal and consumption of healthy diet) and three cardiometabolic factors (untreated total cholesterol <200 mg/dL, untreated blood pressure <120/80 mm Hg and untreated fasting plasma glucose <100 mg/dL). MAIN OUTCOMES: The outcome was ascertained by linkage to cancer and death registries using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth codes C18-C20. RESULTS: During a median follow-up time of 8.72 years, 3060 CRC cases were identified. Compared with the reference (participants with ICVHMs ≤2), the multivariable-adjusted HRs for subgroups with 3, 4, 5 and ≥6 ICVHM factors were 0.98 (95% CI 0.85 to 1.12), 0.90 (95% CI 0.77 to 1.02), 0.85 (95% CI 0.71 to 0.98) and 0.69 (95% CI 0.48 to 0.90), respectively. Among the seven ICVHM factors, lower BMI, healthier diet and ideal fasting plasma glucose were significantly associated with lower risk of CRC (HR: 0.86, 95% CI 0.78 to 0.95; HR: 0.92, 95% CI 0.84 to 0.99; HR: 0.90, 95% CI 0.80 to 0.99). CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to the ICVHMs was associated with a lower risk of CRC among people aged 50 years or older. Among the seven ICVHM factors, BMI, diet and fasting plasma glucose played a more critical role in the prevention of CRC. These findings imply that adherence to ICVHMs should be encouraged to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease as well as CRC.

RESUMO

In the context of high-quality development, environmental issues are being paid more and more attention to, and the release of free formaldehyde has become a major problem that needs to be solved. Glueless plywood mainly adopts natural substances as raw materials, without adding chemical products, such as resin adhesives, and it does not contain harmful substances, such as formaldehyde. Glueless plywood is a green product that causes no pollution in the environment and no harm to the human body. In this study, the corresponding weak-phase components in boxwood were pre-delivered by an acidic environmental treatment, and the high-temperature and high-pressure compacting process produced a glueless boxwood panel with excellent water resistance and mechanical properties, while remaining environmentally friendly.

RESUMO

Microglia are the representative myeloid cells in the brain, and their over-activation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Microglia activation is believed to be regulated by the CD200-CD200R signaling. As the peripheral counterpart of microglia, monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) share the same progenitor and antigen markers, and they have similar biological behaviors and mirror microglial function in the brain. Here, we studied CD200R expression and its regulation in MDMs from 32 PD cases, 27 age-matched old controls, and 28 young controls. We found that the basal CD200R expression is similar in MDMs from young control, old control and PD patients. However, the induction of CD200R expression in MDMs under various conditions is impaired in the old groups, especially in PD patients. There was a selective decrease in CD200R expression induced by co-culture with dying PC12 cells in MDMs from PD cases, as compared with MDMs from the age-matched controls. We also found that the inducible CD200R expression correlated inversely with the onset age of PD and to tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) released from MDMs. These results suggest an intrinsic abnormality in the CD200-CD200R signaling in MDMs during aging and, especially, in PD. We speculate that in the PD brain, microglia might undergo abnormalities similar to MDMs.
