RESUMO

Metaflumizone is a novel semicarbazone insecticide. It functions as a sodium channel blocker insecticide (SCBI) with excellent insecticidal activity on most economically important lepidopterous pests. This study assessed the resistance risk of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to metaflumizone in the laboratory and the effects of metaflumizone selection on toxicities to other insecticides. Spodoptera exigua collected from a field population at Huizhou in 2012 were successively challenged by metaflumizone to evaluate the risk of resistance evolution. Twelve generations of selection increased resistance to metaflumizone by 3.4-fold and threshold trait analysis revealed that the realized heritability (h2) of this resistance was 0.086. When h2 was equal to 0.086 and 90% of individuals were killed at each generation, LC50 to metaflumizone increased by 10-fold after 15 generations. The selection by metaflumizone did not increase the resistance to indoxacarb, chlorantraniliprole, spinosad, methomyl, or endosulfan, suggesting a lack of cross-resistance. However, metaflumizone challenge upheld the recession of resistance to emamectin benzoate, chlorfluazuron, and tebufenozide. The block of resistance drops by metaflumizone exposure implied a possible cross-resistance between metaflumizone and these three insecticides. These results contribute to integrated resistance management of S. exigua.

A winter air pollution episode was observed in Hangzhou, South China, during the Second World Internet Conference, 2015. To study the pollution characteristics and underlying causes, the Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry model was used to simulate the spatial and temporal evolution of the pollution episode from December 8 to 19, 2015. In addition to scenario simulations, analysis of the atmospheric trajectory and synoptic weather conditions were also performed. The results demonstrated that control measures implemented during the week preceding the conference reduced the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution level to some extent, with a decline in the total PM2.5 concentration in Hangzhou of 15% (7%-25% daily). Pollutant long-range transport, which occurred due to a southward intrusion of strong cold air driven by the Siberia High, led to severe pollution in Hangzhou on December 15, 2015, accounting for 85% of the PM2.5 concentration. This study provides new insights into the challenge of winter pollution prevention in Hangzhou. For adequate pollution prevention, more regional collaborations should be fostered when creating policies for northern China.

The aim of the present study was to examine the curative effect of dynamic fixation Coflex treatment for patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. In the present study, 78 patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis were recruited and divided equally into the control and observation groups. The control group was treated with traditional decompression fusion and the observation group received dynamic fixation Coflex system. Surgery and hospitalization were shorter in the observation group than in the control group. Intraoperative blood loss and drainage volume after surgery were significantly lower in the observation group compared to the control group. The treatment effective rate for the observation group was significantly higher. Visual analogue scale, Oswestry disability index and Japanese Orthopaedic Association pain and functional scores as well as postoperative vertebral canal area and adjacent segment quantitative scores improved after surgery in the two groups, but the observation group showed greater improvement. The curative effect of dynamic fixation Coflex treatment for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis demonstrates advantages over traditional surgery, including less trauma and bleeding, pain reduction, improved postoperative rehabilitation, and lower incidence of adjacent segment degeneration.

Novel flowerlike nanostructures consisting of MgO nanofibers were successfully synthesized by a simple chemical route with H(2)O at 950 degrees C in an Ar atmosphere. Various durations of heating gave different growth stages that led to varied product morphologies. The synthesized products were systematically studied by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The results show that the nucleation and growth process of the nanoflowers seems to be a vapor-solid mechanism, and that the total heating time during the reaction process is a critical factor for the development of MgO nanoflowers. Initially, Mg particles formed on the Si substrate, followed by the formation of MgO clusters as nucleation centers on the magnesium melt surface and the nucleation of short MgO nanofibers, then growth of the MgO nanofibers occurred, and finally MgO nanoflowers were formed. Besides nanoflowers, novel hierarchical MgO nanostructures were also observed. These nanostructures may be used as three-dimensional composite materials and as supports for other materials.
