RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of dorsal perforator flap of cross-finger proper digital artery in the treatment of finger soft tissue defect caused by high-pressure injection injury. Methods: Between July 2011 and June 2020, 14 cases of finger soft tissue defect caused by high-pressure injection injury were repaired with dorsal perforator flap of cross-finger proper digital artery. All patients were male, with a mean age of 36 years (range, 22-56 years). The defects were located on the index finger in 8 cases, middle finger in 4 cases, and ring finger in 2 cases. The causes of injury include 8 cases of emulsion paint injection, 4 cases of oil paint injection, and 2 cases of cement injection. The time from injury to debridement was 2-8 hours, with a mean time of 4.5 hours. The soft tissue defects sized from 4.0 cm×1.2 cm to 6.0 cm×2.0 cm. The flaps sized from 4.5 cm×1.5 cm to 6.5 cm×2.5 cm. The donor site of the flap was repaired with skin graft. The pedicle was cut off at 3 weeks after operation, and followed by functional exercise. Results: All flaps and skin grafts at donor sites survived, and the wounds healed by first intention. Twelve patients were followed-up 16-38 months (mean, 22.6 months). The texture and appearance of all flaps were satisfactory. The color and texture of the flaps were similar to those of the surrounding tissues. The two-point discrimination of the flap was 10-12 mm, with a mean of 11.5 mm. There were different degrees of cold intolerance at the end of the affected fingers. At last follow-up, the finger function was evaluated according to the Upper Extremity Functional Evaluation Standard set up by Hand Surgery Branch of Chinese Medical Association, 3 cases were excellent, 8 cases were good, and 1 case was poor. Conclusion: The dorsal perforator flap of cross-finger proper digital artery can effectively repair finger soft tissue defect caused by high-pressure injection injury. The operation was simple, and the appearance and function of the finger recover well.

RESUMO

The species belonging to the Rhododendron genus are well-known for their colorful corolla. Molecular marker systems have the potential to elucidate genetic diversity as well as to assess genetic fidelity in rhododendrons. In the present study, the reverse transcription domains of long terminal repeat retrotransposons were cloned from rhododendrons and used to develop an inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism (IRAP) marker system. Subsequently, 198 polymorphic loci were generated from the IRAP and inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers, of which 119 were derived from the IRAP markers. It was shown that in rhododendrons, IRAP markers were superior to the ISSRs in some polymorphic parameters, such as the average number of polymorphic loci (14.88 versus 13.17). The combination of the IRAP and ISSR systems was more discriminative for detecting 46 rhododendron accessions than each of the systems on their own. Furthermore, IRAP markers demonstrated more efficiency in genetic fidelity detection of in-vitro-grown R. bailiense Y.P.Ma, C.Q.Zhang and D.F.Chamb, an endangered species recently recorded in Guizhzhou Province, China. The available evidence revealed the distinct properties of IRAP and ISSR markers in the rhododendron-associated applications, and highlighted the availability of highly informative ISSR and IRAP markers in the evaluation of genetic diversity and genetic fidelity of rhododendrons, which may facilitate preservation and genetic breeding of rhododendron plants.

RESUMO

A novel particle combined electrode named TiO2/g-C3N4@AC (TGCN-AC) was prepared by loading TiO2 and g-C3N4 on activated carbon through gel method, which was used to degrade levofloxacin (LEF) in pharmaceutical wastewater by photoelectric process. The remarkable physicochemical features of particle electrodes were verified by using diverse characterization techniques including SEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR, BET and pHZPC. EIS-CV and photocurrent showed excellent electrocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis performance of particle electrodes. The photocatalytic characteristics and fluorescence properties of the particle electrode were proved by UV-vis DRS and PL spectra measurements. Combined with Tauc's plot and Mott-Schottky plots curves, the ECB and EVB of particle electrodes were determined. The experiments on different influence factors such as pH, ultrasonic, aeration, current density and the concentration of LEF were carried out in the photoelectric reactor. Under the conditions of pH values 3.0, 200 W ultrasonic, 8 L/min aeration, the mass ratio of g-C3N4 and TiO2 is 8%, after 4.0 h of photoelectric process, about 94.76% of LEF (20 mg/L) in water was degraded. TGCN-AC also has excellent reusability. The degradation rate of LEF can still reach 71.17% after repeated use for 6 times. Scavenger studies showed that h+ and O2- were the main active species. By observing the colony size of E. coli, it was proved that the LEF in the effluent had no antibacterial activity. The degradation pathways of LEF was analyzed and drawn by HPLC-MS spectra.

RESUMO

Ionic conductive hydrogels prepared from various biological macromolecules are ideal materials for the manufacture of human motion sensors from the perspective of resource regeneration and environmental sustainability. However, it is still challenging to prepare hydrogels with both high toughness and self-healing ability. In this study, lignin-based ß-CD-PVA (LCP) self-healing conductive hydrogels with high tensile properties were prepared by one-step method using alkali lignin as a plasticizer. Compared with PVA hydrogel, the maximum storage modulus and elongation were increased by 2.5 and 20.0 times, respectively. Uniform distribution of lignin can increase the fluidity and distance of polymer molecular chains, thus improving the viscoelastic and tensile properties of the LCP self-healing hydrogel. LCP hydrogels can maintain self-healing ability in both high (45 °C) and low temperature (0 °C) environments, and the self-healing ability is not affected by pH. Moreover, it also has good conductivity, anti-bacterial, thermostability, and anti-UV property, which has a good application prospect in the field of 3D printing and wearable electronic devices, which expands the efficient utilization of lignin in biorefinery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Whether interferon (IFN)-α therapy is better than nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) in the prevention of adverse outcomes, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is still uncertain or controversial. This study aimed to compare the cumulative incidence of adverse outcomes in patients with CHB on IFN-α- and NA-based therapies. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with CHB on antivirals. Patients treated with IFN-α (IFN-α or peginterferon-α) with or without NAs were defined as the IFN-α group, and those only receiving NAs were defined as the NAs group. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to minimize baseline bias. Cox regression models were performed to select possible factors related to adverse outcomes development. RESULTS: All 1247 patients were divided into the IFN-α (n = 877) and NAs (n = 370) groups. 26patients (20 and 6 in the NAs and IFN-α groups) developed adverse outcomes (decompensated cirrhosis, liver failure, HCC, liver transplantation and deaths) during a median follow-up of 5.2 years. The cumulative adverse outcomes occurrence at 10 years was significantly lower in the IFN-α group than in the NAs group in all (1.1% vs. 11.9%, P <0.001) and treatment-naïve (1.1% vs. 12.4%, P <0.001) patients. Similar trends were observed after PSM and differentiation of cirrhosis. Multivariate analysis before and after PSM showed that IFN-α-based treatment was independently associated with a lower adverse outcomes incidence (before/after PSM: P = 0.001/P = 0.002). HCC risk stratification analyses revealed that the superiority of IFN-α in preventing HCC was more significant in patients with high-risk HCC. CONCLUSIONS: IFN-α-based therapy was superior to NAs in preventing adverse outcomes in patients with CHB regardless of cirrhosis, and in reducing HCC in those with a high risk of HCC.

RESUMO

Harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) in tobacco smoke are thought to be responsible for the increased health risks. Tobacco heating products (THPs) heat tobacco instead of burning it to achieve significantly fewer toxicants than conventional cigarettes. To assess the toxicity of THP aerosols, it is often desirable to extract the main constituents using a solvent method. In this study, we developed a high-speed centrifugal method for extracting the total particulate matter (TPM) from THPs to quantitatively compare the toxicity of different THPs and conventional cigarettes. Its TPM extraction efficiency exceeded 85%, and the primary aerosol components and typical HPHCs were comparable to those of the solvent method. The TPMs extracted from five THPs were subjected to 14 in vitro toxicology assessments, and the results were compared with those of a 3R4F reference cigarette. Physical separation can improve biases from solvent selectivity and potential interactions between solvent and aerosol constituents. By eliminating solvent influence, the extraction method could achieve high-dose exposures, enabling the toxicity comparison of different THPs. The relative toxicity of the THPs differed under different dosage units, including the TPM concentration, nicotine equivalent, and puff number.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of combined tissue transplantation for repair of serially damaged injuries on radial side of hand and function reconstruction. METHODS: Between May 2013 and May 2017, 34 cases of serially damaged injuries on radial side of hand were treated. There were 29 males and 5 females; aged 17-54 years, with an average of 32.1 years. There were 23 cases of crushing injuries, 5 cases of bruising injuries, 4 cases of machine strangulation injuries, and 2 cases of explosion injuries. The time from injury to admission was 40 minutes to 3 days, with an average of 10 hours. According to the self-determined serially damaged injuries classification standard, there were 1 case of typeⅠa, 2 cases of typeⅠb, 10 cases of typeⅡa, 5 cases of type Ⅱb, 3 cases of type Ⅱc, 1 case of type Ⅱd, 7 cases of type Ⅲa, 3 cases of type Ⅲb, 1 case of type Ⅲc, and 1 case of type Ⅲd. According to the classification results, the discarded finger, nail flap, the second toe, anterolateral thigh flap, ilium flap, fibula flap, and other tissue flaps were selected to repair hand wounds and reconstruct thumb, metacarpal bones, and fingers. RESULTS: After operation, 2 cases of flaps developed vascular crisis and survived after symptomatic treatment; the other transplanted tissue survived smoothly. All cases were followed up 1 to 7 years, with an average of 2.4 years. The average fracture healing time was 7.4 weeks (range, 5.3-9.0 weeks). At last follow-up, the reconstructed fingers and the grafted flaps recovered good sensory function, with a two-point discrimination of 5 to 11 mm (mean, 9 mm). According to the evaluation standard of the upper limb function evaluation of the Chinese Medical Association Hand Surgery Society, the reconstructed thumb was rated as excellent in 24 thumbs, good in 8 thumbs, and fair in 2 thumbs; the reconstructed finger was rated as excellent in 18 fingers, good in 2 fingers, and fair in 1 finger. CONCLUSION: For the serially damaged injuries on radial side of hand, according to its classification, different tissues are selected for combined transplantation repair and functional reconstruction, which can restore hand function to the greatest extent and improve the quality of life of patients.

RESUMO

Cigarette smoking increases health risks, such as respiratory diseases and heart diseases. Despite the decline in smoking rates in some countries, millions of adults still choose to smoke cigarettes. The use of next-generation nicotine delivery devices, such as tobacco heating products (THPs), may become a potentially safer alternative to smoking. Here, we report on the development of an electrically heated THP, coded as THP COO, with three different flavored tobacco sticks. The purpose of the study was to measure the levels of a list of harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) in the total particulate matter (TPM) generated and to conduct a set of toxicological assessments of THP COO as compared with 3R4F reference cigarette. For all 55 HPHCs identified, the levels generated by the THP tobacco sticks were significantly lower in comparison to those in 3R4F TPM. The rate of reduction of HPHCs was between 68.6% and 99.9% under Health Canada Intense (HCI) smoking regimen. Human lung cancer cells (NCI-H292) exposed to 3R4F TPM showed dose-dependent responses for most of the 15 in vitro toxicity endpoints, whereas those exposed to comparable doses of THP COO TPMs did not. Therefore, exclusive use of the THP COO products may reduce the exposure of those tested HPHCs and thus potentially reduce health risk of smoking.

RESUMO

The economic viability of corn biorefineries depends heavily on the sale of coproducts as animal feeds, but elevated phosphorus (P) contents can exacerbate manure management issues. Phosphorus removal from light steep water and thin stillage, two concentrated in-process aqueous streams at wet milling and dry-grind corn biorefineries, could simultaneously generate concentrated fertilizer and low-P animal feeds, but little is known regarding how differences in stream composition affect removal. To address this data gap, we show that the solubility of P in light steep filtrate (LSF) and thin stillage filtrate (TSF) exhibits distinct sensitivity to calcium (Ca) and base addition due to differences in P fractionation and protein abundance. In LSF, P was primarily organic, and near-complete removal of P (96%) was observed at pH 8 and a Ca/total P (TP) ratio of 2. In TSF, TP removal was lower (81%), and there was more equal distribution of organic and orthophosphate, indicating that the Ca requirements of inorganic P precipitation were a limiting factor. The C/H/N ratio, elemental characterization, and crude protein analysis of the precipitated solids indicated that coprecipitation of amorphous solids containing Ca, Mg, and K with soluble proteins facilitated removal of P, particularly in LSF. Although the removal mechanisms and solubility limits differed, these results highlighted the magnitude (40-70 mM) and efficacy (80-96%) of P recovery from two biorefinery streams.

RESUMO

The oncogenesis of cervical cancer is a multi-factor and multi-step process, and major risk factors include oncogene activation with tumor suppressor gene inactivation, viral factors, and immune factors. For example, the human papillomavirus (HPV) has been linked to the occurrence of cervical cancer. At present, the pathogenesis of cervical cancer remains unclear. Fra-1 (Fos-related antigen 1, also known as FOSL1) is a member of the Fos family and an important nuclear transcription factor that regulates normal cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. In the present study, we found that Fra-1 inhibited the proliferation of cervical cancer cells while also promoting apoptosis and affecting cell cycle distribution. Moreover, Fra-1 up-regulated STAT1 expression and modulated p53 signal pathway activity in cervical cancer cells. Overexpression of Fra-1 inhibited cell senescence by altering sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) expression in HeLa cells, and Fra-1 overexpression restored mitochondrial disorder and suppressed metabolic reprogramming in HeLa cells. Silencing of STAT1 impaired the inhibitory effect of Fra-1 on cervical cancer cell growth, while knock-down of STAT1 reversed the effect on cell senescence and mitochondrial dysfunction caused by Fra-1 in HeLa cells. Silencing of STAT1 also recovered metabolic reprogramming in cervical cancer cells. In summary, our results show that Fra-1 inhibited cervical cancer cell growth and the Warburg effect via STAT1-mediated regulation of the p53 signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Enhancing the response to visible light and inhibiting recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes is a key point for strongly improved self-cleaning performances of TiO2 self-cleaning films. In this work, TiO2 thin film doping with three different ions (Fe3+, Al3+, Ce3+) on glass substrate respectively by sol-gel method to explore the effect of ions on self-cleaning performance of TiO2 thin films. All the prepared samples are characterized by XRD, SEM, UV-Vis and water contact angle tester. Moreover, the self-cleaning mechanism of doping TiO2 thin film is discussed. The water contact angle of TiO2 thin film doping with 9% Fe (molar ratio), 5% Ce and 5% Al are reach at 0°, respectively. In comparison with the water contact angle of pure TiO2 thin film (2.5°), TiO2 thin film doping with metal ions exhibit better self-cleaning property.

RESUMO

Ubiquitin-specific protease 18 (USP18) is an important inhibitor of interferon (IFN) antiviral activity, and the aim of this study was to investigate the association between the USP18 mRNA level change in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) when stimulated with IFN in vitro before initiating treatment and the treatment outcomes in HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients treated with IFN. A total of 44 patients who received standard IFN-based anti-HBV therapy and follow-up were enrolled in the study. The in vitro IFN-induced USP18 mRNA change (USP18IFN-N ) was measured via comparison of quantitative PCR-determined USP18 transcription levels of BPMCs cultured with and without IFN stimulation. Either for virological (VR) or serological response (SR), the baseline USP18IFN-N was significantly higher (P = 0.018 for VR, P = 0.008 for SR) among nonresponders (n = 23 for VR, n = 33 for SR) than that of responders (n = 21 for VR, n = 11 for SR). Multivariate analyses revealed baseline USP18IFN-N was a novel independent predictor for either VR (OR = 0.292, 95% CI = 0.102-0.835, P = 0.022) or SR (OR = 0.173, 95% CI = 0.035-0.849, P = 0.031) in our cohort. In addition, baseline USP18IFN-N in combination with HBV DNA loads or HBeAg levels showed improved accuracy of pretreatment prediction for VR or SR responders, respectively. Baseline USP18IFN-N levels are associated with both virological and serological response, and have the potential to become a clinical predictor for treatment outcomes in HBeAg-positive CHB patients before initiating IFN-α therapy.

RESUMO

To better understand the role of integrin subunit alpha 9 (ITGA9) gene polymorphism in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), we investigated the distribution of ITGA9 gene polymorphisms (rs2212020 and rs189897) and revealed whether these polymorphisms were associated with a curative effect in EOC. It was found that rs2212020 and rs189897 were correlated significantly with EOC incidence. The frequency of the C allele of rs2212020 was significantly higher in EOC patients than in the control group (P = 0.009, χ2 = 6.857). The population with the C allele of rs2212020 had a higher EOC risk than the population with the T allele (hazard ratio = 1.97, 95.0% CI = 1.178-3.299). Further, our results showed that the CC genotype was a risk factor for EOC. Regarding the association between ITGA9 and the sensitivity to platinum-based chemotherapy in EOC, there were no statistically significant differences in the frequencies of the rs189897 and rs2212020 polymorphisms between the chemosensitive group and the control group. In multivariate analysis, the patients with the TT genotype of rs189897 had longer progression free survival (PFS) than the patients without this genotype (P = 0.010, OR = 2.491). The AT genotype of rs189897 was a risk factor for PFS in EOC. These findings suggested that rs189897 and rs2212020 could play important roles in EOC diagnosis and prognosis.

RESUMO

In this work, particles of activated carbon supported by Fe-N-TiO2 (Fe-N-TiO2/AC) were synthesized and used as the three-dimensional (3D) particle electrode for folic acid wastewater treatment in the 3D electrolysis and photocatalysis coupling process. The structure, morphology, and physical and electrochemical properties of the Fe-N-TiO2/AC particles were characterized, and the results showed that Fe-N-TiO2 was bound on the surface of AC particles by chemical attachment, and the Fe-N-TiO2/AC particles had better capability of adsorption and charge transfer as compared with the TiO2/AC particles. The effects of key operating parameters in the reaction process, including the current density (optimum 0.6 mA/cm2), aeration (optimum 5 L/min), pH value (optimum 5) and the ratio of Fe-N-TiO2/AC particles to cellulose acetate film coating AC particles (optimum 4:1), were optimized regarding the total oxygen carbon (TOC) removal. Under the optimum conditions, TOC removal from folic acid wastewater reached 82.4% during 120 min photoelectrocatalysis. The kinetic analysis and mechanism study showed that the degradation process fitted to the second-order kinetic model better than to the first-order, and the system exhibited synergistic effects in inhibiting photogenic electron-hole recombination and improving electrolytic efficiency. At the same time, this system has the ability to overcome the interference of the strong ionic strength in folic acid wastewater.

RESUMO

Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in women all over the world. However, the exact etiology of cervical cancer remains unclear. The receptor for activated protein kinase C (RACK1) is reported to be involved in tumorigenesis and tumor progression. Besides, the prognostic value of RACK1 in several kinds of tumors has been identified. However, there are limited studies on the functional role of RACK1 in cervical cancer. In this study, we tested the expression level of RACK1 by immunohistochemistry and western blot technologies and find that it is upregulated in cervical cancer. Colony formation and CCK8 assays indicate that RACK1 promotes cell proliferation in CaSki cervical cancer cells. While the silence of RACK1 decreases the cell proliferation in CCK8 analysis. ß-galactosidase staining suggests that RACK1 decreases cell senescence in cervical cancer cells. Invasion and migration assay show that RACK1 promotes the invasion and migration of cervical cancer cells. Also, when RACK1 was silenced, it exerts the opposite result. Furthermore, the mRNA expression levels of MMP3, MMP9 and MMP10 were upregulated in RACK1overexpressed CaSki cells by qPCR analysis. RACK1 also induces S phase accumulation in cell cycle analysis and suppresses cell apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. Flow cytometry analysis of mitochondria functions suggests that RACK1 increases the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) levels to prevent mitochondrial apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. To explore the possible mechanism of RACK1, we tested and found that RACK1 upregulates the expression of NF-κB, cyclin D1 and CDK4 and downregulates the expression of p53, p38, p21 and STAT1 in cervical cancer cells. These results suggest that RACK1 promotes cell growth and invasion and inhibits the senescence and apoptosis in cervical cancer cells probably by affecting the p53 pathway.

RESUMO

Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in women all over the world. The exact mechanism of occurrence and development of cervical cancer has not been fully elucidated. CD38 is a type II transmembrane glycoprotein, which was found to mediate diverse activities, including signal transduction, cell adhesion, and cyclic ADP-ribose synthesis. Here, we reported that CD38 promoted cell proliferation and inhibited cell apoptosis in cervical cancer cells by affecting the mitochondria functions. We established stable cervical cancer cell lines with CD38 over-expressed. CCK8 assay and colony formation assay indicated that CD38 promoted cervical cancer cell proliferation. Nude mouse tumorigenicity assay showed that CD38 significantly promotes tumor growth in vivo. CD38 also induced S phase accumulation in cell cycle analysis and suppressed cell apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. Meanwhile, flow cytometry analysis of mitochondria functions suggested that CD38 decreased intracellular Ca2+ levels in cervical cancer cells and CD38 was involved in down-regulation of ROS levels and prevented mitochondrial apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. The percentage of cells with loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) in CD38-overexpressed cervical cancer cells was less than control groups. Furthermore, we found an up-regulation of MDM2, cyclinA1, CDK4, cyclinD1, NF-kB P65, c-rel, and a downregulation of P53, P21, and P38 by Western blot analysis. These results indicated that CD38 enhanced the proliferation and inhibited the apoptosis of cervical cancer cells by affecting the mitochondria functions.

RESUMO

To understand the mechanisms underlying the discordance between normal serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and significant alterations in liver histology of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection with persistent normal ALT (PNALT) or minimally elevated ALT. A total of 300 treatment-naive chronic HBV-infected patients with PNALT (ALT ≤ upper limit of normal [ULN, 40 U/ml]) or minimally elevated ALT (1-2×ULN) were retrospectively enrolled. All patients underwent liver biopsy and histological changes were analyzed along with biochemical and HBV markers. Among 300 participants, 177 were HBeAg-positive and 123 HBeAg-negative. Significant histologic abnormalities were found in 42.9% (76/177) and 52.8% (65/123) of HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative patients, respectively. Significant fibrosis, which is a marker of prior injury, was more frequently detected than significant necroinflammation (suggesting active liver injury) in both HBeAg-positive and -negative groups, suggesting that liver injury occurred intermittently in our cohort. No significant differences were noticed in the percentage of patients with severe fibrosis between HBeAg-positive and negative phases or between ages 30 and 40 and over 40, suggesting that the fibrosis was possibly carried over from an early phase. Finally, lowering ALT ULN (30 U/L for men, 19 U/L for women) alone was not adequate to increase the sensitivity of ALT detection of liver injury. However, the study was limited to a small sample size of 13 HBeAg-positive patients with ALT in the revised normal range. We detected significant liver pathology in almost 50% of chronic HBV infected patients with PNALT (ALT ≤ 40 U/ml) or minimally elevated ALT. We postulated that small-scale intermittent liver injury was possibly responsible for the discordance between normal serum ALT and significant liver changes in our cohort.

RESUMO

Biofouling is a major challenge in the water industry and public health. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have excellent antimicrobial properties and are considered to be a promising anti-biofouling agent. A modified method was used to produce small sized and well-dispersed biogenic silver nanoparticles with a mean size of ~6 nm (Bio-Ag0-6) using Lactobacillus fermentum. The morphology, size distribution, zeta potential and oxidation state of the silver were systematically characterized. Determination of minimal inhibitory and bactericidal concentration results revealed that biogenic silver Bio-Ag(0-6) can effectively suppress the growth of the test bacteria. Additionally, the inhibition effects of Bio-Ag(0-6) on biofilm formation and on established biofilms were evaluated using P. aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) as the model bacterium. The results from microtiter plates and confocal laser scanning microscopy demonstrated that Bio-Ag(0-6) not only exhibited excellent antibacterial performance but also could control biofilm formation and induce detachment of the bulk of P. aeruginosa biofilms leaving a small residual matrix.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate ultrastructural changes in pulmonary tissue of a rat model of pulmonary fibrosis following treatment with compound Carapax trionycis (C. trionycis; Biejia in Chinese) formula. METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=15): compound C. trionycis formula high-, middle-, and low-dose groups as well as model group. Pulmonary fibrosis was induced by bleomycin. Five rats from each group were sacrificed on day 7, 14 and 28 of the drug treatment, respectively. The pulmonary tissue was harvested followed by hematoxylin-eosin staining and subsequent transmission electron microscopy. The Szapiel's method was used to assess the degree of alveolitis and pulmonary fibrosis. RESULTS: Compared with the model group, the compound C. trionycis formula groups had slighter pulmonary alveolitis after the 7-day treatment and also had alleviated alveolar inflammation and pulmonary fibrosis after the 14-day treatment. After the 28-day treatment, the compound C. trionycis formula groups showed deposition of a small amount of fibrous tissue and lesions occupying less than 21% of the whole lung area, while the model group showed focal or diffuse fibrous deposition, narrow alveolar cavity, disordered lung structure, and lesions in larger than 51% of the whole lung area. CONCLUSIONS: The compound C. trionycis formula can inhibit the proliferation of collagen fibers and resist pulmonary fibrosis.

RESUMO

Biofouling is a major problem for the application of membrane technology in water and wastewater treatment. One of the practical strategies to decrease biofouling is the use of advanced anti-biofouling membrane material. In this study, different amounts of biogenic silver nanoparticles (bio-Ag(0)) were embedded in polyethersulfone (PES) membranes, using the phase-inversion method. The effects of the bio-Ag(0) content on the structure of the membrane and its filtration performance were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that silver-containing nanostructures were uniformly distributed on membrane surface. Bio-Ag(0) incorporation slightly increased the hydrophilicity of the PES membrane and increased the permeate flux. The anti-bacterial and anti-biofouling properties of the bio-Ag(0)/PES nanocomposites membrane were tested with pure cultures (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and a mixed culture (an activated sludge bioreactor), respectively. The bio-Ag(0)/PES composite membranes, even with the lowest content of biogenic silver (140 mg bio-Ag(0)m(-2)), not only exhibited excellent anti-bacterial activity, but also prevented bacterial attachment to the membrane surface and decreased the biofilm formation during a 9 weeks test.
