RESUMO

Background: Repeated episodes of jaundice and pruritus are common in a group of autosomal recessive liver diseases known as benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis. Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) is divided into two types, type 1 and type 2, and is caused by mutations in the ATP8B1 and ABCB11 genes. Here, we report a rare case of BRIC type 2 mutation. Case presentation: A 45-year-old Chinese man had three frequent episodes of jaundice marked by extensive excoriation and severe pruritis, although he had no prior history of jaundice. Laboratory investigations showed no evidence of liver damage caused by viral, autoimmune, or acquired metabolic etiologies. The CT scan revealed an enlarged gallbladder with numerous punctate high-density shadows, while no wall thickening was observed. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed no evidence of dilation of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct, as well as the absence of gallstone. Diagnostic evaluation: Immunohistochemical examinations of liver biopsy samples showed cytokeratin-7 positive hepatocytes, suggesting chronic intrahepatic cholestasis. The reticulin fiberstaining demonstrated that the portions of the hepatic plate in the center of the lobule were asymmetrically organized, and somewhat enlarged, with collapsed areas indicating intralobular inflammation. Moreover, there were areas of collapse that indicated the presence of intralobular inflammation. Whole exome sequencing revealed mutations in the ABCB11 gene; c.3084A>G, p.A1028A homozygous mutation (chr2-169789016), and c.2594C>T, p.A865V heterozygous mutation (chr2-169801131). Based on these findings, the final diagnosis of the patient was metabolism-related jaundice. Treatment: Apart from receiving tapering dosage of prednisone to lower bilirubin levels, the patient received no extra care. Conclusion: The comprehensive diagnosis of a middle-aged male patient with BRIC-2, which involved extensive radiological, hematological, and genetic investigations, informed a tailored tapering prednisone regimen, highlighting the importance of personalized medicine in managing atypical presentations of this rare cholestatic disorder.

RESUMO

It is of great significance to study the plant morphological structure for improving crop yield and achieving efficient use of resources. Three dimensional (3D) information can more accurately describe the morphological and structural characteristics of crop plants. Automatic acquisition of 3D information is one of the key steps in plant morphological structure research. Taking wheat as the research object, we propose a point cloud data-driven 3D reconstruction method that achieves 3D structure reconstruction and plant morphology parameterization at the phytomer scale. Specifically, we use the MVS-Pheno platform to reconstruct the point cloud of wheat plants and segment organs through the deep learning algorithm. On this basis, we automatically reconstructed the 3D structure of leaves and tillers and extracted the morphological parameters of wheat. The results show that the semantic segmentation accuracy of organs is 95.2%, and the instance segmentation accuracy AP50 is 0.665. The R2 values for extracted leaf length, leaf width, leaf attachment height, stem leaf angle, tiller length, and spike length were 0.97, 0.80, 1.00, 0.95, 0.99, and 0.95, respectively. This method can significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of 3D morphological analysis of wheat plants, providing strong technical support for research in fields such as agricultural production optimization and genetic breeding.

RESUMO

With the growing demand for new energy storage devices, rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted widespread attention due to their low cost and high safety. Among the cathode materials for ZIBs, polyanionic-based cathode materials with high voltage, high stability, and low cost have great potential. In this paper, tetragonal Na2VOP2O7 was prepared using a simple sol-gel method. The discharge platform voltage amounted to 1.8 V and had good rate and cycle performance due to the inductive effect of pyrophosphate. Then, a protective layer of Zn-hydroxyapatite (ZnHAP) modification was applied to the cathode surface, which can inhibit the hydrolysis of vanadium ions. The capacity was enhanced by 19 % after modification and the capacity retention after 100 cycles was also higher. Interestingly, the Na2VOP2O7 cathode also possesses a self-charging effect, recovering to 48 % of its initial capacity with an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.1 V within a certain period, and light exposure can reduce the self-charging time by 83 %. These beneficial results indicate that the pyrophosphate bifunctional cathode with inductive effect has a great potential to construct high-voltage and multifunctional zinc ion battery.

RESUMO

Chronic exercise intervention is a non-pharmacological therapy suggested to improve cognitive function in various populations. However, few meta-analyses have assessed the cognitive benefits associated with all FITT-VP variables (exercise frequency, intensity, bout duration time, type, volume or total intervention length, and progression) in healthy populations by age. Thus, this meta-analysis assessed the effects of each FITT-VP variable on cognitive function in healthy children, adults, and older adults. This study followed PRISMA guidelines. After searching PubMed and the Web of Science, we included 54 randomized controlled trials to examined the effects of FITT-VP variables on five cognitive domains: global cognition, executive function, memory, attention, and information processing. Moderation analyses assessed the effects by age and by each exercise variables. Exercise benefitted overall cognition and all subcognitive domains. Aerobic and resistance exercise showed the greatest benefits on global cognition and executive function respectively, whereas mind-body exercise benefitted memory. Among all populations, older adults showed the greatest benefits of exercise on global cognition, executive function, and memory compared with controls. Additional studies are needed to assess the effects of exercise on attention and information processing. This meta-analysis offers new insights on the relationships between cognition and FITT-VP exercise variables in healthy populations.

RESUMO

Soil salinization is a worldwide problem that limits agricultural production. It is important to understand the salt stress tolerance ability of maize seedlings and explore the underlying related genetic resources. In this study, we used a high-throughput phenotyping platform with a 3D laser sensor (Planteye F500) to identify the digital biomass, plant height and normalized vegetation index under normal and saline conditions at multiple time points. The result revealed that a three-leaf period (T3) was identified as the key period for the phenotypic variation in maize seedlings under salt stress. Moreover, we mapped the salt-stress-related SNPs and identified candidate genes in the natural population via a genome-wide association study. A total of 44 candidate genes were annotated, including 26 candidate genes under normal conditions and 18 candidate genes under salt-stressed conditions. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a high-throughput phenotyping platform to accurately, continuously quantify morphological traits of maize seedlings in different growing environments. And the phenotype and genetic information of this study provided a theoretical basis for the breeding of salt-resistant maize varieties and the study of salt-resistant genes.

RESUMO

In this article, a 3D photocatalytic support with different Poisson's ratio was used for the first time to control the photocatalytic production rate of hydrogen. It was created by a stereo-lithography method, and the support with the most negative Poisson's ratio got the best result. The Poisson's ratio of the 3D structure influences the rate of hydrogen production, and it is important for the photocatalyst supports to be porous for light to penetrate into them. A series of Ce doped CdS photocatalysts were produced and immobilized on 3D multicellular Al2O3 supports. By changing the proportion of Ce3+ doped into the CdS photocatalysts 1 % of Ce3+ exhibited optimal hydrogen production, which was 222.9 % compared to that of the pure CdS. Using the 3D photocatalytic support with different Poisson's ratio, the photocatalytic production rate of hydrogen increased by 128 %.

RESUMO

Solar-thermal conversion is considered as a green and simple means to improve the performance of energy storage materials, but often limited by the intrinsic photothermal properties of materials and crude structure design. Herein, inspired by the unique light trapping effect of wide leaf spiral grass during photosynthesis, a biomimetic structural photothermal energy storage system is developed, to further promote the solar thermal-driven pseudo capacitance improvement. In this system, three-dimensional printed tortional Kelvin cell arrays structure with interesting light trapping property functions as "spiral leaf blades" to improve the efficiency of light absorption, while graphene quantum dots/MXene nanohybrids with wide photothermal response range and strong electrochemical activity serve as "chloroplast" for photothermal conversion and energy storage. As expected, the biomimetic structure-enhanced photothermal supercapacitor achieves an ideal solar thermal-driven pseudo capacitance enhancement (up to 304%), an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 10.47 F cm-2 , remarkable photothermal response (surface temperature change of 50.1 °C), excellent energy density (1.18 mWh cm-2 ) and cycling stability (10000 cycles). This work not only offers a novel enhancement strategy for photothermal applications, but also inspires new structure designs for multifunctional energy storage and conversion devices.

RESUMO

The vascular bundle of the shank is an important 'flow' organ for transforming maize biological yield to grain yield, and its microscopic phenotypic characteristics and genetic analysis are of great significance for promoting the breeding of new varieties with high yield and good quality. In this study, shank CT images were obtained using the standard process for stem micro-CT data acquisition at resolutions up to 13.5 µm. Moreover, five categories and 36 phenotypic traits of the shank including related to the cross-section, epidermis zone, periphery zone, inner zone and vascular bundle were analyzed through an automatic CT image process pipeline based on the functional zones. Next, we analyzed the phenotypic variations in vascular bundles at the base of the shank among a group of 202 inbred lines based on comprehensive phenotypic information for two environments. It was found that the number of vascular bundles in the inner zone (IZ_VB_N) and the area of the inner zone (IZ_A) varied the most among the different subgroups. Combined with genome-wide association studies (GWAS), 806 significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified, and 1245 unique candidate genes for 30 key traits were detected, including the total area of vascular bundles (VB_A), the total number of vascular bundles (VB_N), the density of the vascular bundles (VB_D), etc. These candidate genes encode proteins involved in lignin, cellulose synthesis, transcription factors, material transportation and plant development. The results presented here will improve the understanding of the phenotypic traits of maize shank and provide an important phenotypic basis for high-throughput identification of vascular bundle functional genes of maize shank and promoting the breeding of new varieties with high yield and good quality.

RESUMO

Species within the Genus Catalpa are mostly semievergreen or deciduous trees with opposite or whorled leaves. C. bungei, C. fargesii f. duclouxii and C. fargesii are sources of traditional precious wood in China, known as the "kings of wood". Due to a lack of phenotypic and molecular studies and insufficient sequence information, intraspecific morphological differences, common DNA barcodes and partial sequence fragments cannot clearly reveal the phylogenetic or intraspecific relationships within Catalpa. Therefore, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genomes of six taxa of the genus Catalpa and analyzed their basic structure and evolutionary relationships. The chloroplast genome of Catalpa shows a typical tetrad structure with a total length ranging from 157,765 bp (C. fargesii) to 158,355 bp (C. ovata). The length of the large single-copy (LSC) region ranges from 84,599 bp (C. fargesii) to 85,004 bp (C. ovata), that of the small single-copy (SSC) region ranges from 12,662 bp (C. fargesii) to 12,675 bp (C. ovata), and that of the inverted repeat (IR) regions ranges from 30,252 bp (C. fargesii) to 30,338 bp (C. ovata). The GC content of the six chloroplast genomes were 38.1%. In total, 113 unique genes were detected, and there were 19 genes in IR regions. The 113 genes included 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes and four rRNA genes. Five hypervariable regions (trnH-psbA, rps2-rpoC2, rpl22, ycf15-trnl-CAA and rps15) were identified by analyzing chloroplast nucleotide polymorphisms, which might be serve as potential DNA barcodes for the species. Comparative analysis showed that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were highly diverse in the six species. Codon usage patterns were highly similar among the taxa included in the present study. In addition to the stop codons, all codons showed a preference for ending in A or T. Phylogenetic analysis of the entire chloroplast genome showed that all taxa within the genus Catalpa formed a monophyletic group, clearly reflecting the relationships within the genus. This study provides information on the chloroplast genome sequence, structural variation, codon bias and phylogeny of Catalpa, which will facilitate future research efforts.

RESUMO

Attention to unpleasant odors is crucial for human safety because they may signal danger; however, whether odor concentration also plays a role remains debated. Here, we explored the effects of two concentrations of pleasant and unpleasant odors on the attention network, comprising the alerting, orienting, and executive control networks. Behavioral responses were examined using the Attention Network Test, while electrophysiological responses were examined by assessing N1 and N2 amplitudes in 30 young men. We found that irrespective of odor concentration, an unpleasant odor induced larger cue-related N1 and N2 amplitudes in the alerting and executive control networks at occipital and frontal electrode sites and that was only paralleled by a reduced behavioral response time of cue-related trails in the alerting network. Thus, our results do not provide supporting evidence for a concentration-dependent effect, but they do suggest that more attentional resources are allocated to alerting-relevant stimuli to improve behavioral response times to a potential threat in young men.

RESUMO

Adoptive T cell therapy (ACT) is a promising strategy for treating cancer, but it often fails because of cell intrinsic regulatory programs that limit the degree or duration of T cell function. In this study, we found that ectopic expression of microRNA-200c (miR-200c) markedly enhanced the antitumor activity of CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) during ACT in multiple mouse models. CTLs transduced with miR-200c exhibited reduced apoptosis during engraftment and enhanced in vivo persistence, accompanied by up-regulation of the transcriptional regulator T cell factor 1 (TCF1) and the inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF). miR-200c elicited these changes by suppressing the transcription factor Zeb1 and thereby inducing genes characteristic of epithelial cells. Overexpression of one of these genes, Epcam, was sufficient to augment therapeutic T cell responses against both solid and liquid tumors. These results identify the miR-200cEpCAM axis as an avenue for improving ACT and demonstrate that select genetic perturbations can produce phenotypically distinct T cells with advantageous therapeutic properties.

RESUMO

With the accelerating update of advanced electronic gadgets, a great deal of attention is being paid today to the function integration and intelligent design of electronic devices. Herein, a novel kind of multitasking 3D oxygen-deficient WO3- x ∙ 2H2 O/Ag/ceramic microscaffolds, possessing simultaneous giant energy density, ultrahigh mechanical strength, and reversible electrochromic performance is proposed, and fabricated by a 3D printing technique. The ceramic microscaffolds ensure outstanding mechanical strength and stability, the topology optimized porous lattice structure provides developed surface area for coloration as well as abundant easily accessible channels for rapid ion transportation, and the bifunctional oxygen-defective pseudomaterials enable the large areal capacity and impressive electrochromic performance. As a result, this 3D-printed multitasking microscaffolds simultaneously perform structure-designable, electrochromic, compression resistant, and energy storage functions, behaving with true 3D structure with tailorable curvatures, excellent compressive strength (61.9 MPa), large color variations (>145% in b* value), good aesthetic visual quality as well as exciting electrochemical performances for energy storage including ultrahigh areal capacitance (10.05 F cm-2 at 5 mA cm-2 ), record-high energy density (0.60 mWh cm-2 ), and superior long-term cycling stability (88.6% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles). This work opens up the possibility for high-performance multi-functional coupling structural materials and integrated systems.

RESUMO

Colorectal cancer ranks within the top three cancers both in terms of incidence as well as deaths. Metastasis is often the major cause of mortality and liver is the primary and most common site to which colorectal cancers metastasize. We tested the prognostic ability of a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) signature in liver metastatic colorectal cancers. We first evaluated expression levels of several lncRNAs in eight excised liver metastases from primary colorectal cancers and found significantly upregulated lncRNAs HOTAIR and MALAT1 along with significantly downregulated LOC285194. We further compared the expression levels of HOTAIR, MALAT1 and LOC285194 in primary colorectal tumors at the time of initial diagnosis and correlated them with disease progression and liver metastasis. HOTAIR and MALAT1 were significantly upregulated and LOC285194 was significantly downregulated in twelve patients who were diagnosed with liver metastasis within 5 years of initial diagnosis, compared to the five patients with no metastasis. A positive signature comprising of high HOTAIR/MALAT1 and low LOC285194 also correlated with progression to higher grade tumors. Thus, the lncRNA signature comprising of high HOTAIR/MALAT1 and low LOC285194 could be a prognostic signature for liver metastasis as well as overall poor survival.

RESUMO

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of latamoxef on coagulation function and to analyse its risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed to compare patients receiving latamoxef versus those treated with ceftazidime. Baseline characteristics and coagulation parameters were recorded and analysed to explore whether treatment with latamoxef increased the risks of coagulation disorders and bleeding. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: A total number of 162 patients receiving latamoxef and 93 patients receiving ceftazidime were included. Haemorrhagic events were similar between groups, but patients receiving latamoxef had a higher risk of coagulation disorders compared to those receiving ceftazidime. Multivariate analysis revealed that the exposure of antibiotics, especially the cumulative defined daily doses (DDDs), and the nutrition risk may be the predictors of coagulation disorders. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Latamoxef might induce coagulation disorders. Cumulative DDDs and the nutrition risk were linked with coagulation disorders.

RESUMO

Quinclorac (QNC) is an effective but environmentally persistent herbicide commonly used in rice production. However, few studies have investigated its environmental behavior and degradation. In the present study, we carried out microbial cultures in the presence of QNC to observe changes in soil microbiota and to identify species capable of QNC degradation by using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA. Pseudomonas was the dominant genus, and Pseudomonas putida II-2 and other species were found to be capable of mineralizing QNC as a source of carbon and energy. However, this degradation rate was slow, only reaching 51.5 ± 1.6% for 7 days at 30 °C on QNC + minimal salt medium. Achromobacter sp. QC36 co-metabolized QNC when rice straw was added into the mineral salt medium containing QNC, and a mixed culture of both strains could mineralize approximately 92% of the 50 mg/L QNC after 5 days of cultivation in the presence of rice straw, at 25-35 °C and pH 6.0-8.0. Non-phytotoxicity of tobacco after degradation of QNC by mixed strains was evidenced in a pot experiment. These results suggest that this mixed culture may be useful in QNC bioremediation and can be used as a bio-formulation for agro-economical and industrial application.

RESUMO

Human activities have shaped large-scale distributions of many species, driving both range contractions and expansions. Species differ naturally in range size, with small-range species concentrated in particular geographic areas and potentially deviating ecologically from widespread species. Hence, species' responses to human activities may be influenced by their geographic range sizes, but if and how this happens are poorly understood. Here, we use a comprehensive distribution database and species distribution modeling to examine if and how human activities have affected the extent to which 9,701 vascular plants fill their climatic potential ranges in China. We find that narrow-ranged species have lower range filling and widespread species have higher range filling in the human-dominated southeastern part of China, compared with their counterparts distributed in the less human-influenced northwestern part. Variations in range filling across species and space are strongly associated with indicators of human activities (human population density, human footprint, and proportion of cropland) even after controlling for alternative drivers. Importantly, narrow-ranged and widespread species show negative and positive range-filling relationships to these human indicators, respectively. Our results illustrate that floras risk biotic homogenization as a consequence of anthropogenic activities, with narrow-ranged species becoming replaced by widespread species. Because narrow-ranged species are more numerous than widespread species in nature, negative impacts of human activities will be prevalent. Our findings highlight the importance of establishing more protected areas and zones of reduced human activities to safeguard the rich flora of China.

RESUMO

Developing environmentally friendly, stable, and narrow and direct band gap halide perovskite materials has attracted substantial interest because of their wide range of potential applications. Here, an all-inorganic Pb-free halide double perovskite, Cs2NaVCl6, was prepared by the solid-state reaction method and hydrothermal method. Cs2NaVCl6 crystallizes in the cubic Fm3̅m space group with the unit parameter a = 10.3497(14) Å. The combined density functional theory and experimental study demonstrates that the compound is a direct band gap semiconductor with a band gap of ∼2.64 eV. More importantly, it exhibits strong visible and near-infrared light absorptions and markedly ambient and thermal stability.

RESUMO

Risk of gene flow from canola (Brassica napus) to species of wild relatives was used as an example to evaluate the risk of gene flow of transgenic crops. B. juncea and B. rapa were the most common weedy Brassica species in China, which were both sexually compatible with canola. Data on canola cultivation in China were collected and analyzed using geographic information system (GIS), and the distribution of its wild relatives was predicted by MaxEnt species distribution model. Based on biological and phenological evidence, our results showed that gene flow risk exists in most parts of the country, especially in places with higher richness of wild Brassica species. However, risk in dominant canola cultivation regions is relatively low owing to the reduced distribution density of wild species in these regions. Three regions of higher risk of gene flow had been identified. Risk of gene flow is relatively high in certain areas. China has been assumed to be the original center of B. juncea and B. rapa, and gene flow may lead to negative effects on the conservation of biodiversity of local species. Strategies had been proposed to reduce the possibility of gene flow either by monitoring introgression from crops to wild relatives in the areas of high adoption of the crop or by taking measures to limit the releasing of new crops or varieties in the areas with abundant wild relatives.
