Metal sulfides in waste rocks and tailings are susceptible to serious soil and water contamination due to the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) during stockpiling. The hydrometallurgical process is one of the most essential heavy metal remediation technologies through harmless disposal and resource utilization of the waste sulfides. However, atmospheric hydrometallurgy of sulfides still faces great challenges due to low leaching efficiency and high cost. In this work, we proposed a cooperative leaching system (Fe2(SO4)3-O3) and investigated the oxidative dissolution process of sphalerite (ZnS). Under the optimal conditions, the extracted zinc reached 97.8%. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) (·OH, 1O2 and ·O2-) were identified in the radical quenching experiments. The dissolution of sphalerite did not show passivation due to the ozone's capability to oxidize the sulfur in sphalerite to sulfate. In addition, stirring rate, O3 inlet concentration, and Fe2(SO4)3 concentration had a significant effect on the dissolution of sphalerite. Meanwhile, the apparent activation energy was 24.11 kJ/mol based on kinetic fitting, which indicated that the controlling step of the reaction was mainly a diffusion process. This work demonstrated the cooperative effect of sphalerite leaching in the O3-Fe2(SO4)3 system and provided a theoretical reference for efficient and atmospheric dissolution of sphalerite.

Liver cancer and gastric cancer have extremely high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. It is well known that an increase or decrease in trace metals may be associated with the formation and development of a variety of diseases, including cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the contents of aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in cancerous liver and gastric tissues, compared to adjacent healthy tissues, and to investigate the relationship between trace metals and cancer progression. During surgery, multiple samples were taken from the cancerous and adjacent healthy tissues of patients with liver and gastric cancer, and trace metal levels within these samples were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). We found that concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn in tissues from patients with liver cancer were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (P < 0.05). Similarly, patients with gastric cancer also showed lower levels of Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Zn-but higher levels of Cu and Se-compared to the controls (P < 0.05). In addition, patients with liver and gastric cancers who had poorly differentiated tumours and positive lymph node metastases showed lower levels of trace metals (P < 0.05), although no significant changes in their concentrations were observed to correlate with sex, age, or body mass index (BMI). Logistic regression, principal component analysis (PCA), Bayesian kernel regression (BKMR), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and quantile-based g computing (qgcomp) models were used to analyse the relationships between trace metal concentrations in liver and gastric cancer tissues and the progression of these cancers. We found that single or mixed trace metal levels were negatively associated with poor differentiation and lymph node metastasis in both liver and gastric cancer, and the posterior inclusion probability (PIP) of each metal showed that Cd contributed the most to poor differentiation and lymph node metastasis in both liver and gastric cancer (all PIP = 1.000). These data help to clarify the relationship between changes in trace metal levels in cancerous liver and gastric tissues and the progression of these cancers. Further research is warranted, however, to fully elucidate the mechanisms and causations underlying these findings.

Using Mendelian Randomization (MR) and large-scale Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) data, this study aimed to investigate the potential causative relationship between testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels and the onset of several cancers, including pathway enrichment analyses of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with cancer allowed for a comprehensive bioinformatics approach, which offered a deeper biological understanding of these relationships. The results indicated that increased testosterone levels in women were associated with a higher risk of breast and cervical cancers but a lower risk of ovarian cancer. Conversely, increased testosterone was linked to lower stomach cancer risk for men, whereas high SHBG levels were related to decreased risks of breast and prostate cancers. The corresponding genes of the identified SNPs, as revealed by pathway enrichment analysis, were involved in significant metabolic and proliferative pathways. These findings emphasize the need for further research into the biological mechanisms behind these associations, paving the way for potential targeted interventions in preventing and treating these cancers.

Tryptophan (TRP) and its indole metabolites exhibit numerous biological effects, especially their antioxidant properties. This study used untargeted metabolomics in conjunction with targeted metabolomics to investigate the differential expression of tryptophan and its indole metabolites in follicular fluid (FF) of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) and normal ovarian reserve (NOR) populations. This study included patients with DOR (n = 50) and females with NOR (n = 35) who received in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. Untargeted metabolomics suggests that diminished ovarian reserve affects the metabolic profile of FF, TRP and indole metabolites were significantly down-regulated in the DOR group. Targeted metabolomics quantification revealed that the levels of TRP, IPA and IAA in the FF of the DOR group were significantly lower than those of the NOR group (P < 0.01). The concentration of TRP in FF is positively correlated with the available embryo rate in NOR females. These results provide data support to explore the pathogenesis of DOR and to look for new biomarkers and ovarian protectors. Additionally, alterations in TRP and its indole metabolites in FF may indirectly reflect the interaction between intestinal flora and the follicular microenvironment.

Although cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that reportedly causes liver injury, few studies have investigated biomarkers of Cd-induced liver injury. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of bile acid (BA) in Cd-induced liver injury and determine reliable and sensitive biochemical parameters for the diagnosis of Cd-induced liver injury. In this study, 48 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into six groups and administered either normal saline or 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg/d cadmium chloride for 12 weeks. A total of 403 subjects living in either a control area (n = 135) or Cd polluted area (n = 268) of Dongdagou-Xinglong (DDGXL) cohort were included, a population with long-term low Cd exposure. The BA profiles in rats' liver, serum, caecal contents, faeces, and subjects' serum were detected using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Changes in rats' and subjects' liver injury indices, rats' liver pathological degeneration, and rats' liver and subjects' blood Cd levels were also measured. Cadmium exposure caused cholestasis and an increase in toxic BAs, leading to liver injury in rats. Among them, glycoursodeoxycholic acid (GUDCA), glycolithocholic acid (GLCA), taurolithocholic acid (TLCA), and taurodeoxycholate acid (TDCA) are expected to be potential biomarkers for the early detect of Cd-induced liver injury. Serum BAs can be used to assess Cd-induced liver injury as a simple, feasible, and suitable method in rats. Serum GUDCA, GLCA, TDCA, and TLCA were verified to be of value to evaluate Cd-induced liver injury and Cd exposure in humans. These findings provided evidence for screening and validation of additional biomarkers for Cd-induced liver injury based on targeted BA metabolomics.

Flexible electrochemical supercapacitors have shown great potential in the next-generation wearable and implantable energy-storage devices. Conductive polymer hydrogels usually possess unique porosity, high conductivity, and broadly tunable properties through molecular designs and structural regulations, thus holding tremendous promise as high-performance electrodes and electrolytes for flexible electrochemical supercapacitors. Numerous chemical and structural designs have provided unlimited opportunities to tune the properties of conductive polymer hydrogels to match the various practical demands. Various electrically and ionically conductive hydrogels have been developed to fabricate novel electrodes and electrolytes with satisfactory mechanical and electrochemical performance. This feature article focuses on the fabrication and applications of conductive polymer hydrogel composites and nanocomposites as respective electrodes and electrolytes for flexible electrochemical supercapacitors. First, we introduce the representative strategies to prepare electrically and ionically conductive polymer hydrogels. Second, conductive polymer hydrogel composites and nanocomposites as supercapacitor electrodes and electrolytes are presented and discussed. Finally, challenges and perspectives on conductive polymer hydrogel composites and nanocomposites for future flexible electrochemical supercapacitors are presented.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the appearance differences of Gansu cultivated Angelica sinensis, and explore the relevance between the appearance differences and quality. METHODS: The macroscopic feature of 22 batches of Angelica sinensis from different habitats was measured as index. The content of ferulic acid, volatile oil and extract were determined by the method recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The data were analyzed by SPSS 15.0 software. RESULTS: The habitat was positively correlated with the index. Indexes of nine groups had direct correlation with each other. The habitat was significantly correlated with other indexes except the length of the head. The extract and ferulic acid were positively correlated with habitat and index. Extract had significant correlation with macroscopic feature. Ferulic acid only had significant correlation with head length. The volatile oil only had significant correlation with habitat and no significant correlation with index. Root weight and number of lateral roots had obvious difference in different habitat which coefficient of variation was 44.1% and 28.6%, respectively. CONCLUSION: There are significant individual differences in Angelica sinensis. The chemical composition has a certain correlation with macroscopic feature. Angelica sinensis cultivation needs to consider the choice of habitat.
