RESUMO

Gels show great promise for applications in wearable electronics, biomedical devices, and energy storage systems due to their exceptional stretchability and adjustable electrical conductivity. However, the challenge lies in integrating multiple functions like elasticity, instantaneous self-healing, and a wide operating temperature range into a single gel. To address this issue, a hybrid hydrogen bonding strategy to construct gel with these desirable properties is proposed. The intricate network of hybrid strong weak hydrogen bonds within the polymer matrix enables these ionohydrogel to exhibit remarkable instantaneous self-healing, stretching up to five times their original length within seconds. Leveraging these properties, the incorporation of ionic liquids, water, and zinc salts into hybrid hydrogen bond crosslinked network enables conductivity and redox reaction, making it a versatile ionic skin for real-time monitoring of human movements and respiratory. Moreover, the ionohydrogel can be used as electrolyte in the assembly of a zinc-ion battery, ensuring a reliable power supply for wearable electronics, even in extreme conditions (-20 °C and extreme deformations). This ionohydrogel electrolyte simplifies the diverse structural requirements of gels to meet the needs of various electronic applications, offering a new approach for multi-functional electronics.

RESUMO

Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) provides an innovative way to achieve efficient methanogenesis, and this study proposes a new approach to upregulate the DIET pathway by enhancing quorum sensing (QS). Based on long-term reactor performance, QS enhancement achieved more vigorous methanogenesis with 98.7% COD removal efficiency. In the control system, methanogenesis failure occurred at the accumulated acetate of 7420 mg of COD/L and lowered pH of 6.04, and a much lower COD removal of 41.9% was observed. The more significant DIET in QS-enhancing system was supported by higher expression of conductive pili and the c-Cyts cytochrome secretion-related genes, resulting in 12.7- and 10.3-fold improvements. Moreover, QS enhancement also improved the energy production capability, with the increase of F-type and V/A-type ATPase expression by 6.3- and 4.2-fold, and this effect probably provided more energy for nanowires and c-Cyts cytochrome secretion. From the perspective of community structure, QS enhancement increased the abundance of Methanosaeta and Geobacter from 54.3 and 17.6% in the control to 63.0 and 33.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in carbon dioxide reduction and alcohol dehydrogenation increased by 0.6- and 7.1-fold, respectively. Taken together, this study indicates the positive effects of QS chemicals to stimulate DIET and advances the understanding of the DIET methanogenesis involved in environments such as anaerobic digesters and sediments.

RESUMO

Anaerobic fermentation is widely installed to recovery valuable resources and energy as CH4 from waste activated sludge (WAS), and its implementation in developing countries is largely restricted by the slow hydrolysis, poor efficiency, and complicate inert components therein. In this study, enzyme-enhanced fermentation was conducted to improve sludge solubilization from 283 to 7728 mg COD/L and to enhance volatile fatty acids (VFAs) yield by 58.6 % as compared to the conventional fermentation. The rapid release of organic carbon species, especially for tryptophan- and tyrosine-like compounds, to outer layer of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) occurred to reduce the structural complexity and improve the sludge biodegradability towards VFAs production. Besides, upon enzymatic pretreatment the simultaneous exposure of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups on sludge surfaces increased the interfacial hydrophilicity. By quantitative analysis via interfacial thermodynamics and XDLVO theory, it was confirmed that the stronger hydrophilic repulsion and energy barriers in particle interface enhanced interfacial mass transfer and reactions involved in acidogenic fermentation. Meanwhile, these effects stimulate the fermentation functional microflora and predominant microorganism, and the enrichment of the hydrolytic and acid-producing bacteria in metaphase and the proliferation of acetogenic bacteria, e.g., Rubrivivax (+9.4 %), in anaphase also benefits VFAs formation. This study is practically valuable to recovery valuable VFAs as carbon sources and platform chemicals from WAS and agriculture wastes.

RESUMO

Intellectual disability (ID) is a condition characterized by cognitive impairment and difficulties in adaptive functioning. In our research, we identified two de novo mutations (c.955C>T and c.732C>A) at the KDM2A locus in individuals with varying degrees of ID. In addition, by using the Gene4Denovo database, we discovered five additional cases of de novo mutations in KDM2A. The mutations we identified significantly decreased the expression of the KDM2A protein. To investigate the role of KDM2A in neural development, we used both 2D neural stem cell models and 3D cerebral organoids. Our findings demonstrated that the reduced expression of KDM2A impairs the proliferation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs), increases apoptosis, induces premature neuronal differentiation, and affects synapse maturation. Through ChIP-Seq analysis, we found that KDM2A exhibited binding to the transcription start site regions of genes involved in neurogenesis. In addition, the knockdown of KDM2A hindered H3K36me2 binding to the downstream regulatory elements of genes. By integrating ChIP-Seq and RNA-Seq data, we made a significant discovery of the core genes' remarkable enrichment in the MAPK signaling pathway. Importantly, this enrichment was specifically linked to the p38 MAPK pathway. Furthermore, disease enrichment analysis linked the differentially-expressed genes identified from RNA-Seq of NPCs and cerebral organoids to neurodevelopmental disorders such as ID, autism spectrum disorder, and schizophrenia. Overall, our findings suggest that KDM2A plays a crucial role in regulating the H3K36me2 modification of downstream genes, thereby modulating the MAPK signaling pathway and potentially impacting early brain development.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activities of α-terpineol against common foodborne pathogenic bacteria by agar well diffusion, broth microdilution, and colony counting assay. Propulsive research was conducted to reveal the antibacterial mechanisms, including morphology, infrared spectroscopy, membrane fluidity, membrane permeability, proton motive force, and oxidative phosphorylation. Results indicated that the antibacterial activity of α-terpineol decreased in the following order: Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. With an initial cell count of 8 log CFU/mL, α-terpineol at 0.8% (v/v) reduced E. coli O157:H7 and S. aureus by approximately 5.6 and 3.9 log CFU/mL within 1 h, respectively. Remarkable destruction in cell envelopes and intracellular organizations was observed. The hydroxyl of α-terpineol might form glycosidic bonds with carbohydrates and hydrogen bonds with PO2- and COO- via infrared spectroscopy analysis. Generalized polarization of Laurdan revealed that the polar head groups of phospholipids transformed into close packed. The anisotropy variations of trimethyl amino-diphenylhexatriene (TMA-DPH) and DPH suggested membrane fluidity decreased. The N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine intake assay indicated that α-terpineol impaired the cell wall. Propidium iodide staining was indicative of damaged plasma membranes. Electron transport in the cytoplasmic membrane was impaired, inducing reactive oxygen species accumulation. Both membrane electrical potential and membrane pH gradient collapsed. The disruption of proton motive force and the leakage of ATP resulted in a deficit of intracellular ATP. Our research revealed the interaction between the hydroxyl group of α-terpineol and bacteria affects membrane function contributing to the bacteria's death. KEY POINTS: • α-Terpineol hydroxy formed glycosidic bonds and hydrogen bonds with bacteria • α-Terpineol increased the membrane gelation and reduced the membrane fluidity • Proton motive force and oxidative phosphorylation were impaired.

RESUMO

In this study, chitosan-gelatin conjugates were prepared by chemical crosslinking of tannic acid. The cryogel templates were developed through freeze-drying and immersed in camellia oil to construct cryogel-templated oleogels. Chemical crosslinking resulted in apparent colour changes and improved emulsion-related/rheological properties on conjugates. The cryogel templates with different formulas exhibited different microstructures with high porosities (over 96 %), and crosslinked samples might have higher hydrogen bonding strength. Tannic acid crosslinking also led to enhanced thermal stabilities and mechanical properties. Cryogel templates could reach a considerable oil absorption capacity of up to 29.26 g/g and prevent oil from leaking effectively. The obtained oleogels with high tannic acid content possessed outstanding antioxidant abilities. After 8 days of rapid oxidation at 40 °C, Oleogels with a high degree of crosslinking owned the lowest POV and TBARS values (39.74 nmol/kg, and 24.40 µg/g, respectively). This study indicates that the involvement of chemical crosslinking would favor the preparation and the application potential of cryogel-templated oleogels, and the tannic acid in the composite biopolymer systems could act as both the crosslinking agent and the antioxidant.

RESUMO

Sewage sludge is an important reservoir of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and the reclamation of sewage sludge potentially threats human health and environmental safety. Sludge treatment and disposal are expected to control these risks, and this review summarizes the fate and controlling efficiency of antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB in sludge involved in different processes, i.e., disintegration, anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, drying, pyrolysis, constructed wetland, and land application. Additionally, the analysis and characterization methods of antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB in complicate sludge are reviewed, and the quantitative risk assessment approaches involved in land application are comprehensively discussed. This review benefits process optimization of sludge treatment and disposal, with regard to environmental risks control of antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB in sludge. Furthermore, current research limitations and gaps, e.g., the antibiotic resistance risk assessment in sludge-amended soil, are proposed to advance the future studies.

RESUMO

Mathematical ability is moderately heritable, and it is a complex trait which can be evaluated in several different categories. A few genetic studies have been published on general mathematical ability. However, no genetic study focused on specific mathematical ability categories. In this study, we separately performed genome-wide association studies on 11 mathematical ability categories in 1146 students from Chinese elementary schools. We identified seven genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with strong linkage disequilibrium among each other (all r2 > 0.8) associated with mathematical reasoning ability (top SNP: rs34034296, p = 2.01 × 10-8 , nearest gene: CUB and Sushi multiple domains 3, CSMD3). We replicated one SNP (rs133885) from 585 SNPs previously reported to be associated with general mathematical ability associated with division ability in our data (p = 1.053 × 10-5 ). In the gene- and gene-set enrichment analysis by MAGMA, we found three significant enrichments of associations with three mathematical ability categories for three genes (LINGO2, OAS1 and HECTD1). We also observed four significant enrichments of associations with four mathematical ability categories for three gene sets. Our results suggest new candidate genetic loci for the genetics of mathematical ability.

RESUMO

Reading disability exhibited defects in different cognitive domains, including word reading fluency, word reading accuracy, phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming and morphological awareness. To identify the genetic basis of Chinese reading disability, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of the cognitive traits related to Chinese reading disability in 2284 unrelated Chinese children. Among the traits analyzed in the present GWAS, we detected one genome-wide significant association (p < 5 × 10-8 ) on word reading fluency for one SNP on 4p16.2, within EVC genes (rs6446395, p = 7.33 × 10-10 ). Rs6446395 also showed significant association with Chinese character reading accuracy (p = 2.95 × 10-4 ), phonological awareness (p = 7.11 × 10-3 ) and rapid automatized naming (p = 4.71 × 10-3 ), implying multiple effects of this variant. The eQTL data showed that rs6446395 affected EVC expression in the cerebellum. Gene-based analyses identified a gene (PRDM10) to be associated with word reading fluency at the genome-wide level. Our study discovered a new candidate susceptibility variant for reading ability and provided new insights into the genetics of developmental dyslexia in Chinese children.

RESUMO

With the increasing interest in value-added maize products, the interaction of zein with bioactive molecules to become more nutritional and beneficial to human health has gained a lot of attention. To broaden the application of ellagic acid (EA) in maize flour products, we investigated the interaction between zein and EA. The fluorescence quenching type of zein interacting with EA was mainly static quenching through hydrophobic interaction, as demonstrated by quenching behavior modeling, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy confirmed the formation of zein-EA complexes. Synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy showed that EA reduced the polarity of zein around tyrosine residues, which were exposed to a more hydrophobic microenvironment. Meanwhile, circular dichroism suggested that EA noticeably changed the secondary structure of zein, which was mainly reflected in the increase of α-helix and ß-sheet content and the decrease of random coil content. Finally, the molecular docking simulation found that zein could have five active sites binding to EA and there was hydrogen bond interaction besides hydrophobic interaction. The findings of this study provided a basis for a theory for the interaction mechanism between zein and EA, which could be essential for developing value-added plant-derived protein products using EA as a functional component.

RESUMO

Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD) are associated with abnormal expression of immune-related factors (IRFs), which have been proposed as biomarkers of either disease diagnosis (trait markers) or treatment (state markers). However, the state markers have been found to be less reproducible than the trait markers in previous studies. In the current study, we focused on the changes of IRFs in blood of SCZ and BPD patients receiving monotherapy. SCZ (N = 49) and BPD (N = 49) Chinese patients were recruited at acute episode and followed for 9 to 51 days until remission. Blood samples were collected at two state-points, acute state before treatment and remission state after treatment. A total of 41 IRFs in plasma were quantified by the Luminex assay. After adjusting covariates, we found four cytokines or cytokine receptors were significantly increased at remission when compared to acute episode in all the patients, including CD30, BAFF, CCL20, and CXCL10 (Bonferroni corrected p < 0.05). CD30 and BAFF were consistently increased in both SCZ and BPD while the increase of CCL20 was only observed in BPD but not SCZ when analyzing the two disorders separately. CXCL10 change was not significant in either SCZ or BPD alone. The changes of these four factors were correlated with each other, but not with clinical features. CD30 concentration in the BPD acute state was correlated with sleep quality (Spearman's rs = 0.365, Bonferroni corrected p < 0.05). Overall, we found that four factors (CD30, BAFF, CCL20, and CXCL10) might be associated with treatment of psychosis.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the inhibitory effect and mitigation strategy of dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC) suppression on anaerobic digestion. With the 12 h-suppression, only 16.64% of anaerobes were alive, and acetotrophic methanogens were significantly inhibited. As for batch test, DDBAC suppression significantly prolonged the start-up of systems and decreased the biogas production. In cellulose semi-continuous digestion process, the DDBAC suppression induced volatile fatty acids accumulation and pH decrease. However, the biochar amended reactor effectively mitigated the DDBAC suppression and achieved 370.5 mL/d·g-chemical-oxygen-demand biogas production. Moreover, 17.8% more protein in extracellular polymeric substances was secreted as the bio-barrier to defense the DDBAC suppression. Furthermore, microbial analysis showed that biochar addition selectively enriched directed interspecies electron transfer (DIET) participant bacteria (Anaerolineaceae and Syntrophomonas) and methanogens (Methanosaeta and Methanobacterium). Meanwhile, the potential metabolic pathway analysis showed that the abundance of amino acids and energy metabolism were increased 28% and 8%, respectively. The abundance of encoding enzyme related to hydrogenotrophic and acetotrophic methanogenesis enriched 1.88 times and 1.48 times, respectively. These results showed the performance and mechanisms involved in DIET establishment with ethanol stimulation biochar addition.

RESUMO

Cutting is an imperative operation in the food-manufacturing factory, separating food into a predefined geometry. A broad range of solid foods, with various components, textures, and structures, pose enormous challenges to conventional cutting strategies. Additionally, the cutting performance is significantly impacted by the processing parameters, wherein trial-and-error or empirical methods are often used to select the parameters in source-wasting and time-consuming ways. Hence, there is a need to accelerate the development of advanced cutting techniques and novel modeling approaches in the food-manufacturing industry. Recently, advanced cutting techniques (ultrasonic vibration-assisted [UVA], laser, and waterjet cutting) are seen to be superior in processing foods of various textures, with the advantages of high cutting quality, low contamination, and easy operation. Compared with conventional cutting, advanced cutting techniques can dramatically reduce cutting force and energy consumption, resulting in high efficiency, energy-and-source saving, and low carbon footprint. Additionally, the finite element (FE) model does simulate the cutting process well, and artificial intelligence (AI) technology is competent to optimize the cutting parameters. This review is perhaps the first one focusing on the advanced cutting techniques applied in the food industry, serving as a summary of the cutting mechanisms, critical influence factors, and applications of conventional and advanced cutting techniques including UVA, laser, and waterjet cutting. In addition, the modeling approaches with respect to FE and AI models are emphasized. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of advanced cutting techniques combined with modeling approaches are highlighted, and those approaches are promising in the future intelligent food-manufacturing industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The review clearly demonstrates that advanced cutting techniques as having advantages such as high efficiency, energy-and-source saving, and low damages, thus exhibiting great potential in processing food of various textures with high cutting quality, low contamination, and easy operation. Additionally, the FE model does simulate the cutting process well and AI is competent in optimizing the cutting parameters, which possesses great potential in providing comprehensive cutting information and selecting the optimal combination of cutting parameters.

RESUMO

In contrast to the extensively studied dirhodium(II) complexes and iridium(III) complexes, neutral or dicationic dinuclear iridium(II) complexes with an unsupported ligand are underdeveloped. Here, a series of tetracationic dinuclear iridium(II) complexes, featuring the unsupported Ir(II)-Ir(II) single bond with long bond distances (2.8942(4)-2.9731(4) Å), are synthesized and structurally characterized. Interestingly, compared to the previous unsupported neutral or dicationic diiridium(II) complexes, our DFT and high-level DLPNO-CCSD(T) results found the largest binding energy in these tetracationic complexes even with the long Ir(II)-Ir(II) bond. Our study further reveals that London dispersion interactions enhance the stability cooperatively and significantly to overcome the strong electrostatic repulsion between two half dicationic metal fragments. This class of complexes also exhibit photoluminescence in solution and solid states, which, to our knowledge, represents the first example of this unsupported dinuclear iridium(II) system. In addition, their photoreactivity involving the generation of iridium(II) radical monomer from homolytic cleavage was also explored. The experimental results of photophysical and photochemical behaviours were also correlated with computational studies.

RESUMO

A new rhodamine-like alkyne-substituted ligand (Rhodyne) was designed to coordinate a cyclometallated platinum(ii) system. The chemo-induced "ON-OFF" switching capabilities on the spirolactone ring of the Rhodyne ligand with an end-capping platinum(ii) metal centre can modulate the interesting acetylide-allenylidene resonance. The long-lived 3IL excited state of Rhodyne in its ON state as an optically active opened form was revealed via steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy studies. Exceptional near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence based on a rhodamine-like structure were observed at room temperature for the first time. The position of the alkyne communication bridge attached to the platinum(ii) unit was found to vary the lead(ii)-ion binding mode and also the possible resonance structure for metal-mediated allenylidene formation. The formation of a proposed allenylidene resonance structure was suggested to rationalize these phenomena.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effect and microbial community changes between chicken manure (CM) and cardboard (CB) during anaerobic co-digestion. Meanwhile, the energy balance of biogas engineering was extrapolated based on the batch tests. In batch tests, co-digestion system achieved the highest improvement (14.2%) and produced 319.62 mL CH4/gVS with a 65:35 ratio of CB: CM. More extracellular polymeric substance secretion promoted the electron transfer for acidogenesis and more hydrolase was provided with 31.6% improvement. The microbial analysis illustrated that higher acetoclastic Methanosaeta abundance was achieved, leading to 211% enhancement of acetoclastic pathway. Moreover, associated network illustrated that the higher methane production was mainly achieved through matching of hydrolytic bacteria and acidogenesis bacteria. As for energy balance, the synergistic effect increased the energy output by 38% and energy recovery to 46.4%.

RESUMO

We report the synthesis, characterization, and photophysical and ion-binding properties of deep-red to near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent rhodamine derivatives, bearing two spirolactone rings and substitution of the oxygen atoms in the xanthene ring with sulfur atoms (1-S). The diastereoisomeric cis- and trans-forms of the rhodamine derivative were separated and the cis-form (cis-1-S) was structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Upon treatment with Hg2+ ion, cis-1-S was converted into the dual spirolactone ring-opened species, resulting in significant color change and fluorescence enhancement. Substitution of the oxygen atoms with sulfur and extended π-conjugation across the fused six-membered rings upon the two rings-opening processes in the presence of Hg2+ ion led to a significant red-shift of absorption (623 nm) and fluorescence (706 nm) peaks, compared to the ordinary rhodamine. Furthermore, the intracellular Hg2+ -sensing properties of the cis-1-S have been studied by confocal microscopy.

RESUMO

With the invasion of green tide, there were millions of tons of Enteromorpha prolifera (Enteromorpha) that need to be disposed of. An efficient microecological system for Enteromorpha fermentation was constructed using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) and granular sludge at mesophilic condition (35 °C). In order to investigate the influence of S. cerevisiae dosage on fermentation, biomethane production and variations in dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated. The results indicated that the microecosystem with added S. cerevisiae exhibited improved fermentation capacity. Specifically, biomethane production was improved by 18%, with a maximum methane yield of 331 mL/g VS, and the time required to reach 90% methane yield was reduced by 41%. There were positive linear relationships between S. cerevisiae dosage and the efficiency of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis (R2 > 0.9). According to theoretical calculations, there was a positive effect of lower S. cerevisiae dosage (less than 0.93 g/g TS) on biomethane production, and excess dosage (more than 0.93 g/g TS) led to a negative effect due to volatile fatty acid (VFA) accumulation. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) indicated that the humification index (HIX) and fulvic acid (FA) percentage of fluorescence regional integration in the system were decreased because the quinone and ketone groups of the FA accepted electrons from S. cerevisiae. These findings suggested that this microecosystem can accelerate fermentation speed (41%) and increase biomethane output (18.2%). The synergistic effect of Enteromorpha fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae addition.
