Background: Exploring factors associated with the outcome of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) has become a hot focus in research. We sought to investigate the associations of inflammatory markers and blood cell count in cerebrospinal fluid with the outcome of aSAH patients. Methods: We carried a retrospective study including 200 patients with aSAH and surgeries. The associations of neutrophil, lymphocyte, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), system inflammation response index (SIRI), and blood cell count in cerebrospinal fluid on the 1st and 7th postoperative days with the outcome of aSAH patients were investigated by univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression model. Results: According to the modified Rankin scale (mRS) score, there were 147 patients with good outcome and 53 patients with poor outcome. The neutrophil, NLR, SIRI, and SII levels on the seventh postoperative day in patients with poor outcome were all significantly higher than patients with good outcome, P < 0.05. The multivariate logistic regression model including inflammatory markers and blood cell counts in cerebrospinal fluid on the 1st postoperative day confirmed that red blood cell count in cerebrospinal fluid (≥177 × 109/L; OR: 7.227, 95% CI: 1.160-45.050, P = 0.034) was possibly associated with poor outcome of aSAH patients, surgical duration (≥169 min), Fisher grade (III-IV), hypertension, and infections were also possibly associated with the poor outcome. The model including inflammatory markers and blood cell counts in cerebrospinal fluid on the 7th postoperative day confirmed that red blood cell count in cerebrospinal fluid (≥54 × 109/L; OR: 39.787, 95% CI: 6.799-232.836, P < 0.001) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (≥8.16; OR: 6.362, 95% CI: 1.424-28.428, P = 0.015) were all possibly associated with poor outcome of aSAH patients. The NLR (r = 0.297, P = 0.007) and SIRI (r = 0.325, P = 0.003) levels were all correlated with the count of red blood cells in cerebrospinal fluid. Discussion: Higher neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and higher red blood cell count in cerebrospinal fluid were all possibly associated with poor outcome of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, we need a larger sample study.

The inflammatory response is involved in the progression of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We sought to investigate the relationships of inflammatory indicators including blood cell counts and the ratios of different blood cells counts with the prognosis of aSAH patients. We performed a retrospective study including 140 patients with aSAH and aneurysm surgeries. The relationships of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, platelets, systemic immune inflammation index (SII), system inflammation response index (SIRI), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio with prognosis were investigated by univariable analysis and multivariable logistic regression model. The patient with Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score<3 was defined as having a good prognosis, while with mRS score ≥3 was defined as having a poor prognosis. Among 140 patients included, there were 108 cases with good prognosis and 32 cases with poor prognosis after follow-up. On the 3rd postoperative day, the neutrophils counts, SIRI level and SII level in cases with poor prognosis were significantly higher than cases with good prognosis, P < .05. After adjusting for baseline differences in Hunt-Hess grade, Glasgow Coma Scale score, combination with intraventricular hemorrhage and maximum diameter of aneurysm, the levels of SIRI (odds ratio = 3.968, 95% CI: 1.432-10.992, P = .008) and SII (odds ratio = 3.313, 95% CI: 1.029-10.665, P = .045) on the 3rd postoperative day could predict poor prognosis. SII and SIRI on the 3rd postoperative day could independently predict the poor prognosis in aSAH. However, the cutoff values for predicting prognosis needs to be validated in larger-sample studies.

We introduce a numerical method to extract the parameters of run-and-tumble dynamics from experimental measurements of the intermediate scattering function. We show that proceeding in Laplace space is unpractical and employ instead renewal processes to work directly in real time. We first validate our approach against data produced using agent-based simulations. This allows us to identify the length and time scales required for an accurate measurement of the motility parameters, including tumbling frequency and swim speed. We compare different models for the run-and-tumble dynamics by accounting for speed variability at the single-cell and population level, respectively. Finally, we apply our approach to experimental data on wild-type Escherichia coli obtained using differential dynamic microscopy.

We characterize the full spatiotemporal gait of populations of swimming Escherichia coli using renewal processes to analyze the measurements of intermediate scattering functions. This allows us to demonstrate quantitatively how the persistence length of an engineered strain can be controlled by a chemical inducer and to report a controlled transition from perpetual tumbling to smooth swimming. For wild-type E. coli, we measure simultaneously the microscopic motility parameters and the large-scale effective diffusivity, hence quantitatively bridging for the first time small-scale directed swimming and macroscopic diffusion.

Severe postoperative pneumonia can increase the risk of poor outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We aimed to explore the associations of preoperative or postoperative inflammatory markers calculated from blood cell counts with severe pneumonia. This retrospective study was conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Yangtze University from January 2019 to June 2023. The associations of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) with severe pneumonia were analyzed. There were 159 patients with pneumonia and 21 patients without pneumonia. There were 41 patients with severe pneumonia and 118 patients with non-severe pneumonia. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that NLR on the first postoperative (OR = 2.574, 95%CI: 1.035-6.403, p = 0.042) and third postoperative days (OR = 4.296, 95%CI: 1.699-10.860, p = 0.002) were associated with severe pneumonia in aSAH patients. Among patients ≥ 60 years, SIRI on the preoperative day (OR = 7.430, 95%CI: 1.443-38.251, p = 0.016) and NLR on the third postoperative day (OR = 4.748, 95%CI: 1.286-17.801, p = 0.020) were associated with severe pneumonia. Among patients < 60 years, NLR on the first postoperative day (OR = 24.149, 95%CI: 3.476-167.747, p = 0.001) was associated with severe pneumonia. The NLR on the first and third postoperative days were possibly associated with severe pneumonia in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients undergoing clipping or embolization surgeries. Dynamic detection of NLR during early perioperative period may help clinicians to predict the development of severe pneumonia.

PURPOSE: To collect validity evidence for a simulator-based obstetric ultrasound competency assessment tool (OUCAT). METHODS: 89 sonographers from three centers (XY, MC, DT), including novices (n=21), experienced trainees (n=44), and experts (n=24), participated in the competency assessment. Validity evidence of OUCAT was collected according to Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. Content validity was ensured by reviewing guidelines and reaching expert consensus. The response process was ensured via training raters. Internal structure was explored through internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, and test-retest reliability. Relations to other variables were explored by comparing OUCAT scores of sonographers with different experience. Evidence for consequences was collected by determining the pass/fail level. RESULTS: OUCAT included 123 items, of which 117 items could effectively distinguish novices from experts (P<0.05). The internal consistency was represented by the Cronbach's α coefficient (0.978). The inter-rater reliability was high, with XY being 0.868, MC being 0.877, and DT being 0.937 (P<0.001). Test-retest reliability was 0.732 (P=0.001). The performance of experts was significantly better than experienced trainees, and the performance of experienced trainees was significantly better than novices (70.3±10.7 vs. 39.8±15.0 vs. 20.5±10.6, P<0.001). The pass/fail level determined by contrast group method was 45 points. The passing rate of novices, experienced trainees and experts was 0% (0/21), 31.8% (14/44), and 100% (24/24), respectively. CONCLUSION: Simulator-based OUCAT exhibits good reliability and validity in assessing obstetric ultrasound skills.

In active matter, particles typically experience mediated interactions, which are not constrained by Newton's third law and are therefore generically non-reciprocal. Non-reciprocity leads to a rich set of emerging behaviors that are hard to account for starting from the microscopic scale, due to the absence of a generic theoretical framework out of equilibrium. Here we consider bacterial mixtures that interact via mediated, non-reciprocal interactions (NRI) like quorum-sensing and chemotaxis. By explicitly relating microscopic and macroscopic dynamics, we show that, under conditions that we derive explicitly, non-reciprocity may fade upon coarse-graining, leading to large-scale equilibrium descriptions. In turn, this allows us to account quantitatively, and without fitting parameters, for the rich behaviors observed in microscopic simulations including phase separation, demixing, and multi-phase coexistence. We also derive the condition under which non-reciprocity survives coarse-graining, leading to a wealth of dynamical patterns. Again, our analytical approach allows us to predict the phase diagram of the system starting from its microscopic description. All in all, our work demonstrates that the fate of non-reciprocity across scales is a subtle and important question.

To investigate the mechanisms through which ferrous ion (Fe2+) addition improves the utilization of a cottonseed meal (CSM) diet, two experimental diets with equal nitrogen and energy content (low-cottonseed meal (LCM) and high-cottonseed meal (HCM) diets, respectively) containing 16.31% and 38.46% CSM were prepared. Additionally, the HCM diet was supplemented with graded levels of FeSO4·7H2O to establish two different Fe2+ supplementation groups (HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+). Juvenile Ctenopharyngodon idellus (grass carps) (5.0 ± 0.5 g) were fed one of these four diets (HCM, LCM, HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ diets) for eight weeks. Our findings revealed that the HCM diet significantly increased lipid peroxide (LPO) concentration and the expression of lipogenic genes, e.g., sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 (srebp1) and stearoyl-CoA desaturase (scd), leading to excessive lipid droplet deposition in the liver (p < 0.05). However, these effects were significantly reduced in the HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ groups (p < 0.05). Plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration was also significantly lower in the HCM and HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ groups compared to the LCM group (p < 0.05), whereas low-density lipoprotein (LDL) concentration was significantly higher in the HCM + 0.2%Fe2+ and HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ groups than in the LCM group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the plasma levels of liver functional indices, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and glucose (GLU), were significantly lower in the HCM + 0.4%Fe2+ group (p < 0.05). Regarding the expression of genes related to iron transport regulation, transferrin 2 (tfr2) expression in the HCM group and Fe2+ supplementation groups were significantly suppressed compared to the LCM group (p < 0.05). The addition of 0.4% Fe2+ in the HCM diet activated hepcidin expression and suppressed ferroportin-1 (fpn1) expression (p < 0.05). Compared to the LCM group, the expression of genes associated with ferroptosis and inflammation, including acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4b (acsl4b), lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 (lpcat3), cyclooxygenase (cox), interleukin 1ß (il-1ß), and nuclear factor kappa b (nfκb), were significantly increased in the HCM group (p < 0.05), whereas Fe2+ supplementation in the HCM diet significantly inhibited their expression (p < 0.05) and significantly suppressed lipoxygenase (lox) expression (p < 0.05). Compared with the HCM group without Fe2+ supplementation, Fe2+ supplementation in the HCM diet significantly upregulated the expression of genes associated with ferroptosis, such as heat shock protein beta-associated protein1 (hspbap1), glutamate cysteine ligase (gcl), and glutathione peroxidase 4a (gpx4a) (p < 0.05), and significantly decreased the expression of the inflammation-related genes interleukin 15/10 (il-15/il-10) (p < 0.05). In conclusion, FeSO4·7H2O supplementation in the HCM diet maintained iron transport and homeostasis in the liver of juvenile grass carps, thus reducing the occurrence of ferroptosis and alleviating hepatic lipid deposition and inflammatory responses caused by high dietary CSM contents.

The associations of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red cell distribution width (RDW) with the prognosis of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) patients were confirmed in a few studies. But NLR and RDW levels in most of these studies were on admission. Here we carried 1 retrospective study including 150 patients with aSAH who underwent surgeries in the First Affiliated Hospital of Yangtze University from January 2020 to February 2023 to explore the associations on the preoperative day, the first (1st), third (3rd), and seventh (7th) postoperative days. The level of RDW on the 3rd postoperative day and level of NLR on the 7th postoperative day in patients with poor prognosis were significantly higher than patients with good prognosis. The results of multivariate logistic analysis also confirmed the associations of RDW on the 3rd postoperative day (OR = 16.785, 95% CI: 4.077-69.107, P < .001) and NLR on the 7th postoperative day (OR = 8.399, 95% CI: 2.167-32.544, P = .002) with prognosis of aSAH patients. The results of receiver operating characteristic curve showed that cutoff values of RDW and NLR for predicting the prognosis in aSAH patients were 13.05% and 6.97, respectively. Higher RDW on the 3rd postoperative day and NLR on the 7th postoperative day were possibly associated with poor prognosis of aSAH patients. We should pay attention to the RDW and NLR levels during different hospitalization periods, especially in the short postoperative period. Moreover, the cutoff values for predicting prognosis need to be validated in larger-sample studies.

Inflammatory response was involved in the progression of cerebral hemorrhage. We sought to explore the associations of easily obtained inflammatory indicators including blood cell counts and the ratios of different blood cells counts with pneumonia and severe pneumonia in cerebral hemorrhage patients. We carried 1 retrospective study including 200 patients with cerebral hemorrhage and surgeries. The associations of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, platelets, systemic immune inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with pneumonia and severe pneumonia in cerebral hemorrhage patients were estimated by univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression model. Among the 200 patients included, there were a total of 163 (81.5%) had pneumonia after surgeries. Among 163 cerebral hemorrhage patients with pneumonia, 60 (36.8%) cases were evaluated as severe pneumonia. The level of SIRI on the 1st postoperative day in patients with severe pneumonia was higher than non-severe pneumonia (10.89 ± 12.10 × 109/L vs 7.14 ± 9.76 × 109/L, P = .003). The level of SIRI on the 3rd postoperative day in patients with severe pneumonia was more significantly higher (7.98 ± 7.46 × 109/L vs 4.10 ± 3.74 × 109/L, P < .001). The results of multivariate analysis showed that SIRI level on the 3rd postoperative day (>6.5 × 109/L) was associated with severe pneumonia in cerebral hemorrhage patients (OR: 4.409, 95% CI: 1.799-10.806, P = .001). SIRI was possibly a superior predictor for severe pneumonia in cerebral hemorrhage patients compared with other inflammatory indicators. On the one hand, we intend to validate the cutoff value of SIRI for predicting severe pneumonia in larger samples and multicenter studies. On the other hand, we also intend to use this index to guide the choice of antibacterial drugs in order to better benefit patients.

Bloodstain detection can provide crucial information and evidence at a crime scene; however, the ability to selectively detect bloodstains in a non-destructive manner with high sensitivity and low background is limited. This study reports a fluorescent dye (sulfonate indolizine squaraine, SO3SQ) for bloodstain visualization under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. While the dye itself is minimally fluorescent in aqueous solution, it exhibits a "turn-on" mechanism upon binding with human serum albumin (HSA) as the fluorescence intensity increases over 160 times with strong absorption and emission at 693 nm and 758 nm, respectively. Bloodstains can be visualized on a surface even after being diluted 1000 times, and washed latent bloodstains can be detected with high sensitivity. Further, the turn-on fluorescent emission lasts for a minimum of seven days, allowing adequate time for detection. This study also indicates that the SO3SQ can sensitively detect bloodstain after the bloodstain aged for one week. Furthermore, the detection of latent blood fingerprint patterns from colorful backgrounds is demonstrated using this non-destructive method. The selective turn-on fluorescent dye with NIR excitation and emission is highly suitable in forensic science for bloodstain visualization.

The expression status of proinflammatory cytokines in high-altitude pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) has been well studied. However, the changes in interleukin (IL)-8 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) during the reversible changes in pulmonary vascular remodeling (PVR) in PAH after detaching from a hypobaric hypoxic environment have not been elucidated. This investigation elucidated a high-altitude PAH rat model. Then, PAH rats in the high-altitude group were maintained in the high-altitude area, and rats in the low-altitude group returned to the low-altitude area. After 0, 10, 20, and 30 days of PAH modeling, right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) and the mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) were assessed. Right ventricular (RV) hypertrophy was reflected by the ratio of RV/[left ventricle + interventricular septum (S)]. Pathological changes in PVR were accessed by hematoxylin-eosin staining, and medial wall thickness (WT%) and medial wall area (WA%) were measured. TNF-α and IL-8 levels in pulmonary artery tissues and blood were measured with Western blot assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. Our results showed that PAH rats exhibited a substantial increase in RVSP and mPAP, RV hypertrophy, PVR, and enhanced generation of TNF-α and IL-8. Then, we found that these pathological changes were gradually aggravated and TNF-α and IL-8 levels were increased in rats in the high-altitude group after 10, 20, and 30 days of PAH modeling. In contrast, the mPAP was decreased and PVR was alleviated in rats in the low-altitude group, accompanying with reduced TNF-α and IL-8 production. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the generation of TNF-α and IL-8 was also reversible during the reversible changes in PVR after detaching from a hypobaric hypoxic environment. Thus, proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α and IL-8 levels are positively correlated with PVR severity.

Due to its abundance in blood, a great deal of research has been undertaken to develop efficient biosensors for serum albumin and provide insight into the interactions that take place between these biosensing molecules and the protein. Near-infrared (NIR, >700 nm) organic dyes have been shown to be effective biosensors of serum albumin, but their effectiveness is diminished in whole blood. Herein, it is shown that an NIR sulfonate indolizine-donor-based squaraine dye, SO3SQ, can be strengthened as a biosensor of albumin through the addition of biocompatible ionic liquids (ILs). Specifically, the IL choline glycolate (1:1), at a concentration of 160 mM, results in the enhanced fluorescence emission ("switch-on") of the dye in the presence of blood. The origin of the fluorescence enhancement was investigated via methods, including DLS, ITC, and molecular dynamics. Further, fluorescence measurements were conducted to see the impact the dye-IL system had on the fluorescence of the tryptophan residue of human serum albumin (HSA), as well as to determine its apparent association constants in relation to albumin. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy was used to provide evidence that the dye-IL system does not alter the secondary structures of albumin or DNA. Our results suggest that the enhanced fluorescence of the dye in the presence of IL and blood is due to diversification of binding sites in albumin, controlled by the interaction of the IL-dye-albumin complex.

According to crystal engineering, the pharmaceutical intermediate m-nitrobenzoic acid (MNBA), which contains a carboxylic acid group, was selected as a coformer (CCF) for drug cocrystallization with famotidine (FMT), and a new stable FMT salt cocrystal was synthesized. The salt cocrystals were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray single crystal diffraction. A single crystal structure of FMT-MNBA (1:1) was successfully obtained, and then the solubility and permeability of the newly synthesized salt cocrystal were studied. The results showed that, compared with free FMT, the FMT from the FMT-MNBA cocrystal showed improved permeability. This study provides a synthetic method to improve the permeability of BCS III drugs, which will contribute to the development of low-permeability drugs.

Objectives: To compare ultrasonography (US) feature-based radiomics and computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) models for predicting malignancy in thyroid nodules, and to evaluate their utility for thyroid nodule management. Methods: This prospective study included 262 thyroid nodules obtained between January 2022 and June 2022. All nodules previously underwent standardized US image acquisition, and the nature of the nodules was confirmed by the pathological results. The CAD model exploited two vertical US images of the thyroid nodule to differentiate the lesions. The least absolute shrinkage and operator algorithm (LASSO) was applied to choose radiomics features with excellent predictive properties for building a radiomics model. Ultimately, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and calibration curves were assessed to compare diagnostic performance between the models. DeLong's test was used to analyze the difference between groups. Both models were used to revise the American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data Systems (ACR TI-RADS) to provide biopsy recommendations, and their performance was compared with the original recommendations. Results: Of the 262 thyroid nodules, 157 were malignant, and the remaining 105 were benign. The diagnostic performance of radiomics, CAD, and ACR TI-RADS models had an AUC of 0.915 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.881-0.947), 0.814 (95% CI: 0.766-0.863), and 0.849 (95% CI: 0.804-0.894), respectively. DeLong's test showed a statistically significant between the AUC values of models (p < 0.05). Calibration curves showed good agreement in each model. When both models were applied to revise the ACR TI-RADS, our recommendations significantly improved the performance. The revised recommendations based on radiomics and CAD showed an increased sensitivity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value, and decreased unnecessary fine-needle aspiration rates. Furthermore, the radiomics model's improvement scale was more pronounced (33.3-16.7% vs. 33.3-9.7%). Conclusion: The radiomics strategy and CAD system showed good diagnostic performance for discriminating thyroid nodules and could be used to optimize the ACR TI-RADS recommendation, which successfully reduces unnecessary biopsies, especially in the radiomics model.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common pathological type of thyroid cancer. PTC patients with extrathyroidal extension (ETE) are associated with poor prognoses. The preoperative accurate prediction of ETE is crucial for helping the surgeon decide on the surgical plan. This study aimed to establish a novel clinical-radiomics nomogram based on B-mode ultrasound (BMUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for the prediction of ETE in PTC. A total of 216 patients with PTC between January 2018 and June 2020 were collected and divided into the training set (n = 152) and the validation set (n = 64). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm was applied for radiomics feature selection. Univariate analysis was performed to find clinical risk factors for predicting ETE. The BMUS Radscore, CEUS Radscore, clinical model, and clinical-radiomics model were established using multivariate backward stepwise logistic regression (LR) based on BMUS radiomics features, CEUS radiomics features, clinical risk factors, and the combination of those features, respectively. The diagnostic efficacy of the models was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the DeLong test. The model with the best performance was then selected to develop a nomogram. The results show that the clinical-radiomics model, which is constructed by age, CEUS-reported ETE, BMUS Radscore, and CEUS Radscore, showed the best diagnostic efficiency in both the training set (AUC = 0.843) and validation set (AUC = 0.792). Moreover, a clinical-radiomics nomogram was established for easier clinical practices. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test and the calibration curves demonstrated satisfactory calibration. The decision curve analysis (DCA) showed that the clinical-radiomics nomogram had substantial clinical benefits. The clinical-radiomics nomogram constructed from the dual-modal ultrasound can be exploited as a promising tool for the pre-operative prediction of ETE in PTC.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) micro- and nanoparticles produced using the electrospraying technique present high drug encapsulation capacity, a controllable surface area, and a good cost-benefit ratio. PCL is also considered a non-toxic polymeric material with excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. All these characteristics make PCL micro- and nanoparticles a promising material for tissue engineering regeneration, drug delivery, and surface modification in dentistry. In this study, PCL electrosprayed specimens were produced and analyzed to determine their morphology and size. Three PCL concentrations (2, 4, and 6 wt%) and three solvent types (chloroform (CF), dimethylformamide (DMF), and acetic acid (AA)) with various solvent mixtures ratios (1:1 CF/DMF, 3:1 CF/DMF, 100% CF, 1:1 AA/CF, 3:1 AA/CF, and 100% AA) were used while keeping the remaining electrospray parameters constant. SEM images followed by ImageJ analysis showed a change in the morphology and size of the particles among various tested groups. A two-way ANOVA demonstrated a statistically significant interaction (p < 0.001) between PCL concentration and solvents on the size of the particles. With the increase in the PCL concentration, an increase in the number of fibers was observed among all the groups. The morphology and dimensions of the electrosprayed particles, as well as the presence of fibers, were significantly dependent on the PCL concentration, choice of solvent, and solvent ratio.

This study aimed to establish a new clinical-radiomics nomogram based on ultrasound (US) for cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM) in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We collected 211 patients with PTC between June 2018 and April 2020, then we randomly divided these patients into the training set (n = 148) and the validation set (n = 63). 837 radiomics features were extracted from B-mode ultrasound (BMUS) images and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) images. The maximum relevance minimum redundancy (mRMR) algorithm, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm, and backward stepwise logistic regression (LR) were applied to select key features and establish a radiomics score (Radscore), including BMUS Radscore and CEUS Radscore. The clinical model and clinical-radiomics model were established using the univariate analysis and multivariate backward stepwise LR. The clinical-radiomics model was finally presented as a clinical-radiomics nomogram, the performance of which was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic curves, Hosmer-Lemeshow test, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA). The results show that the clinical-radiomics nomogram was constructed by four predictors, including gender, age, US-reported LNM, and CEUS Radscore. The clinical-radiomics nomogram performed well in both the training set (AUC = 0.820) and the validation set (AUC = 0.814). The Hosmer-Lemeshow test and the calibration curves demonstrated good calibration. The DCA showed that the clinical-radiomics nomogram had satisfactory clinical utility. The clinical-radiomics nomogram constructed by CEUS Radscore and key clinical features can be used as an effective tool for individualized prediction of cervical LNM in PTC.

The majority of nosocomial infections are caused by bacteria with antimicrobial resistance and the formation of biofilms, such as implant-related bacterial infections and sepsis. There is an urgent need to develop new strategies for early-stage screening, destruction of multidrug-resistant bacteria, and efficient inhibition of biofilms. Organic dyes that absorb and emit in the near-infrared (NIR) region are potentially non-invasive, high-resolution, and rapid biological imaging materials. In this study, a non-toxic and biocompatible indolizine squaraine dye with water-solubilizing sulfonate groups (SO3SQ) is studied for bacterial imaging and photothermal therapy (PTT). PTT is efficient in eliminating microorganisms through local hyperthermia without the risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria. The optical properties of SO3SQ are studied extensively in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectra analysis shows a strong absorption between 650 nm - 1000 nm. SO3SQ allows for the wash-free fluorescence imaging of drug-resistant bacteria via NIR fluorescence imaging due to a "turn-on" fluorescence property of the dye when interacting with bacteria. Although SO3SQ exhibits no toxicity against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, the PTT property of SO3SQ is efficient in killing bacteria as well as inhibiting and eradicating biofilms. PTT experiments demonstrate that SO3SQ reduces 90% of cell viability in bacterial strains under NIR radiation with a minimum inhibition concentration (MIC90) of >450 µg/mL. The PTT property of SO3SQ can also inhibit biofilms (BIC90 = 1000-2000 µg/mL) and eradicate both preformed young and mature biofilms (MBEC90 = 1500-2000 µg/mL) as observed by crystal violet assays.
