RESUMO

Poultry requires Threonine, an essential amino acid, and its metabolites for proper metabolic function. Threonine is crucial in the biosynthesis of mucin, which is essential for intestinal health and nutrient absorption. Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) is a potential substitute for antibiotic growth promoters in the poultry industry. The current study was designed to evaluate the simultaneous effect of L-Threonine (Thr) and B. subtilis DSM32315 supplementation on laying duck breeders in order to maximize performance. A total number of 648 female 23-week-old Longyan duck breeders were assigned to a 3 × 2 factorial design with six replicates of 18 birds per replicate. L-Thr was added to the control diet at concentrations of 0, 0.7, and 1.4 g/kg, equating to 3.9, 4.6, and 5.3 g Thr/kg, with or without B. subtilis strain DSM 32315 (0.0 and 0.5 g/kg). Increasing Thr concentrations improved egg production and ducklings' hatchling weight (p < 0.05). In addition, L-Thr supplementation resulted in a tendency for decreased feed conversion ratio without affecting egg quality. There was no significant effect (p > 0.05) of the dietary Thr levels on egg yolk and albumen amino acid concentrations. In contrast, the addition of B. subtilis decreased the concentrations of amino acids, excluding proline, in the egg white (albumen) and the egg yolk (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the supplementation of B. subtilis decreased (p < 0 0.001) the hatching weight of ducklings. The addition of B. subtilis without L-Thr decreased (p < 0.05) the hatchability of fertile eggs and the hatching weight of ducklings compared to those of ducks fed dietary L-Thr along with B. subtilis (p < 0.001). The combining L-Thr at 0.7 g/kg with B. subtilis DSM 32315 at 0.5 g/kg could increase eggshell quality, hatchability, and hatching weight. The current study revealed that the combination supplemented of L-Thr and B. subtilis DSM 32315 is recommended due to its positive effects on the eggshell percentage, hatchability and the body weights of newly hatched ducklings when dietary Thr was added at a rate of 0.7 g/kg and B. subtilis DSM 32315 at 0.5 g/kg. In addition, adding L-Thr separately at 0.7 g/kg could improve the egg production of duck breeders. Further studies are required to find the proper dosages of B. subtilis DSM 32315 with co-dietary inclusion of limiting amino acids in the diets of duck breeders. The findings of these trials will support feed additive interventions to transition into antibiotic-free diets.

This experiment aimed to study the effects of supplemental methionine sources, 2-hydroxy-4 methyl(thio) butanoic acid (HMTBa) and DL-Methionine (DL-Met), on productive performance, egg quality, and redox status of laying ducks. A total of 792 healthy 25-wk-old Longyan laying ducks with similar body weights were randomly allotted to 11 treatment groups. Each treatment group had 6 replicates of 12 ducks. The trial lasted for 16 wk. Ducks were fed a basal deficient diet (Met: 0.24%; Met + Cys: 0.51%) or supplemented with DL-Met or HMTBa at 0.05%, 0.12%, 0.19%, 0.26%, and 0.33% of diet, respectively. Compared with the basal diet, supplementation with either DL-Met or HMTBa increased the average egg weight, egg mass, and decreased feed to egg ratio during the whole trial period (P < 0.05). Albumen weight and its ratio to total egg weight were increased, but yolk and shell ratio, albumen height, Haugh unit and shell breaking strength were decreased (P < 0.05). Dietary DL-Met or HMTBa supplementation increased taurine, methionine, leucine, tryptophan and arginine content, and decreased serine and lysine content in plasma (P < 0.05). The redox status of laying ducks was improved by enhancing the glutathione peroxidase and catalase activities, glutathione content and its ratio relative to glutathione (oxidized) content and decreasing malondialdehyde content and increasing mRNA expression of superoxide dismutase-1, glutathione peroxidase-1, hemeoxygenase-1 and nuclear factor-like 2 in liver and ileum with the supplementation of DL-Met or HMTBa (P < 0.05). Liver health status measured by average area proportion lipid droplet was improved with supplementation of DL-Met or HMTBa (P < 0.05). Villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio in the ileum and the ileal gene expression of tight junction protein and occludin were increased with DL-Met or HMTBa supplementation (P < 0.05). Taken together, these results suggested that the efficacy of dietary supplementation of HMTBa was similar to DL-Met, and it ranged from 98% to 100% for productive performance and egg albumen ratio in laying ducks (25 to 41 wk).

Despite the usage of nanoparticles (NPs) is rapidly increasing, several experts have noted the risk of their release into ecosystems and their potential negative impacts on biological systems. However, the available studies on the neurobehavioral impacts of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3NPs) on aquatic organisms are little. Hence, this study targeted to ascertain the harmful effects of Al2O3NPs on behavioral characteristics and genotoxic and oxidative damages in Nile tilapia fish. In addition, the beneficial role of chamomile essential oil (CEO) supplementation in reducing these effects was also investigated. In the current study, fish were distributed into 4 equal groups (n = 60 fish per group). The control group was fed a plain diet only, the CEO group received a basic diet complemented with CEO at a level of 2 mg/kg diet, the ALNP group received a basic diet and was exposed to an approximate concentration of 1/10th LC50 of ALNPs nearly 5.08 mg/L, and the combination group (ALNPs/CEO group) received a basal diet coadministered with ALNPs and CEO at the aforementioned percentages. The findings revealed that O. niloticus exhibit neurobehavioral changes along with changes in the level of GABA, monoamines in the brain tissue, and serum amino acid neurotransmitters, besides a reduction of AChE and Na+/K+-ATPase activities. In addition to brain tissue oxidative damage with upregulation of proinflammatory and stress genes, such as HSP70 and caspase-3, supplementation of CEO significantly reduced the negative impacts of ALNPs. These results showed that CEO has neuroprotective, antioxidant, genoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties in fish that have been exposed to ALNPs. Therefore, we advise its usage as a valuable addition to fish diet.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have many exciting properties that make their use in a continuous increase in various biomedical, industrial, and agricultural applications. This is associated with accumulation in the aquatic ecosystems and fish exposure with consequent deleterious effects. To determine the potential of thymol to counteract the immunotoxic effects of ZnO-NPs, Oreochromis niloticus was exposed to ZnO-NPs (⅕ LC50 =1.14 mg/L, for 28 days) with or without feeding a thymol-incorporated diet (1 or 2 g/kg diet). Our data demonstrated a reduction of aquaria water quality, leukopenia, and lymphopenia with a decrease in serum total protein, albumin, and globulin levels in exposed fish. At the same time, the stress indices (cortisol and glucose) were elevated in response to ZnO-NPs exposure. The exposed fish also revealed a decline in serum immunoglobulins, nitric oxide, and the activities of lysozyme and myeloperoxidase, in addition to reduced resistance to the Aeromonas hydrophila challenge. The RT-PCR analysis showed downregulation of antioxidant (SOD) superoxide dismutase and (CAT) catalase gene expression in the liver tissue with overexpression of the immune-related genes (TNF-α and IL-1ß). Importantly, we found that thymol markedly protected against ZnO-NPs-induced immunotoxicity in fish co-supplemented with thymol (1 or 2 g/kg diet) in a dose-dependent manner. Our data confirm the immunoprotective and antibacterial effects of thymol in ZnO-NPs exposed fish, supporting the potential utility of thymol as a possible immunostimulant agent.

Gastrointestinal dysfunction is associated with a disturbance of immune homeostasis, changes in the intestinal microbiome, alteration of the composition of the bile acid pool, and dynamic imbalance of group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s). Curcumin (CUR), a polyphenolic compound isolated from turmeric, has been known to attenuate intestinal inflammation in potential therapies for gastrointestinal diseases. It was hypothesized that CUR could target the gut microbiome to modulate bile acid (BA) metabolism and the function of ILC3s in ameliorating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced imbalance of intestinal homeostasis in chickens. Seven hundred and twenty 1-day-old crossbred chickens were randomly divided into four treatments, namely CON_saline (basal diet + saline control), CUR_saline (basal diet + 300 mg kg-1 curcumin + saline), CON_LPS (basal diet + LPS), and CUR_LPS (basal diet + 300 mg kg-1 curcumin + LPS), each consisting of 6 replicates of 30 birds. On days 14, 17, and 21, the chickens in the CON_LPS and CUR_LPS treatments were intraperitoneally injected with LPS at 0.5 mg per kg BW. Dietary CUR supplementation significantly decreased LPS-induced suppression of growth performance and injury to the intestinal tight junctions and decreased the vulnerability to LPS-induced acute inflammatory response by inhibiting pro-inflammatory (interleukin-1ß and tumor necrosis factor-α) cytokines. CUR reshaped the cecal microbial community and BA metabolism, contributing to regulation of the intestinal mucosal immunity by promoting the anti-inflammatory (interleukin 10, IL-10) cytokines and enhancing the concentrations of primary and secondary BA metabolites (chenodexycholic acid, lithocholic acid). LPS decreased farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and G protein-coupled receptor class C group 5 member A synthesis, which was reversed by CUR administration, along with an increase in interleukin 22 (IL-22) production from ILC3s. Dietary supplementation of CUR increased the prevalence of Butyricicoccus and Enterococcus and enhanced the tricarboxylic acid cycle of intestinal epithelial cells. In addition, curcumin supplementation significantly increased sirtuin 1 and sirtuin 5 transcription and protein expression, which contributes to regulating mitochondrial metabolic and oxidative stress responses to alleviate LPS-induced enteritis. Our findings demonstrated that curcumin played a pivotal role in regulating the structure of the intestinal microbiome for health promotion and the treatment of intestinal dysbiosis. The beneficial effects of CUR may be attributed to the modulation of the BA-FXR pathway and inhibition of inflammation that induces IL-22 secretion by ILC3s in the intestinal lamina propria.

OBJECTIVES: The broiler chickens are susceptible to heat stress (HS), including the indigenous broilers raised in tropical and subtropical regions. HS caused intestinal dysfunction and disrupted the gut microbiota. However, the researches about the effects of HS on ileal microbiome of indigenous broilers are limited. Therefore, this experiment used 16S rRNA sequencing to analyse the ileal microbial community in indigenous yellow-feather broilers under HS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The single factor completely random design was used in the present study, and forty 8-week-old Chinese indigenous yellow-feather broilers (Huaixiang chickens) were randomly divided into two treatments: normal temperature (NT) group and HS group. There are five replications with four broilers per replicate in each group. The broilers in NT group were raised at 21.3 ± 1.2°C during the whole experimental period, the broilers in HS group were exposed to 32.5 ± 1.4°C for 8 h/day from 9:00 am to 17:00 pm and the temperature of rest time is consistent with NT group. The experiment lasted for 4 weeks. RESULTS: The results showed that HS exposure had no significant effects on the alpha diversity index of ileal microflora of broilers, including the Shannon, Simpson, Chao1 and ACE indexes (p > 0.05). At the genus level, HS significantly reduced the relative abundance of Campylobacter (p < 0.05), and increased the abundance of Delftia (p < 0.05). In addition, prediction of microbial community function indicated that HS significantly enhanced the abundance of the microflora related to lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism and reduced the abundance of the microflora related to nucleotide metabolism and amino acid metabolism. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, the present study revealed that chronic HS (4 weeks) exposure changes the abundance of the ileal microflora of broilers. These findings provided new insights into the role of HS in influencing ileal microbial community in indigenous broilers.

This study evaluated the changes in eggshell mechanical properties, ultrastructure, calcium metabolism-related serum indices, and gene expression in eggshell gland during eggshell formation between laying ducks in the peak (young duck) and late phase (aged duck) of production. A total of 84 healthy young (31 wk of age) and 84 healthy aged (65 wk of age) Longyan laying ducks were each divided into 6 replicates of 14 birds, and caged individually. All the ducks were fed in one house with the same corn-soybean meal-based diet for 5 wk. The eggshell mechanical properties (shell proportion, thickness, breaking strength, and fracture toughness) and chemical components (matrix proteins, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium) decreased in aged laying ducks (P < 0.05). Shell structural indices: total thickness, effective thickness and its proportion decreased, whereas mammillary knob width and its proportion increased (P < 0.05). The regulation values of early fusion, cuffing, caps, and total score of mammillary knobs were higher in aged laying ducks relative to the young ducks (P < 0.05). During the initial, growth and terminal stages of eggshell formation, shell thickness and breaking strength (terminal), shell weight, and its proportion (terminal) decreased in aged laying ducks (P < 0.05). Ultrastructural changes during shell formation indicated that the mammillary-knob density and effective thickness decreased (P < 0.05). Decreases occurred in serum content of phosphorus (growth), and estradiol and calcium contents (terminal) (P < 0.05). Relative expression of Ca2+ transporter and HCO3- exchanger, and matrix proteins genes decreased in aged laying ducks (P < 0.05) at all stages of eggshell formation. Collectively, the decreased incidence of early fusion and caps, increased thickness and width of mammillary knobs, and decreased effective thickness are the crucial differences leading to the compromised mechanical properties of eggshell in the late laying period. A disturbed regulation of calcium metabolism and uterine expression of ion transporters, especially for HCO3- exchange of aged laying ducks likely contribute to age-induced ultrastructural deterioration of the eggshell.

BACKGROUND: The beneficial function of phytase and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (HyD) on the feed utilization rate has been widely investigated. However, studies concerning its influence on weaned piglets largely lag behind. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of phytase and HyD supplementation on the growth performance and bone development in weaned piglets under dietary Ca and P deficiency. RESULTS: The results showed that dietary Ca and P deficiency decreased (P < 0.05) the content of serum P in 6-10 kg piglets, as well as reducing (P < 0.05) the contents of serum Ca and P, average daily gain (ADG), bone mineral density (BMD), breaking force (BF), bone ash and femur Ca in 10-20 kg piglets. Compared with the control group, the feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) of 6-10 kg piglets in the Phy group was decreased (P < 0.05), whereas the ADG, blood Ca and P, BMD, BF, bone ash, P apparent digestibility, Ca and P retention rate of 10-20 kg piglets were increased (P < 0.05). The contents of serum osteocalcin and HyD in 6-10 kg piglets and ADG were higher than in the control group (P < 0.05), as well as the contents of serum Ca and HyD in 10-20 kg piglets in the HyD treatment group. Supplementation with both Phy and HyD decreased the F/D (P < 0.05) and increased the contents of serum Ca, P and HyD in 6-10 kg piglets as well as enhancing the ADG, BMD, BF, bone ash, femur Ca and P, serum Ca and P, HyD, and the apparent digestibility and retention of Ca and P (P < 0.05) in 10-20 kg piglets. Supplementation with Phy and HyD in Ca- and P-deficient dietary decreased bone resorption, and improved tight arrangement of collagen fibers and oblique fibers in weaned piglets. CONCLUSION: These data indicated that supplementation with both 1500 U kg-1 Phy and 50 µg kg-1 HyD could enhance dietary Ca and P utilization and promote bone development in low Ca and P dietary, and supplementation with both Phy and HyD had a significant synergy effect compared to single supplement. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study evaluated dietary Zn supplementation on productive performance, eggshell quality and ultrastructure, and calcium metabolism during eggshell formation in laying ducks. A total of 360 Longyan laying ducks (45-wk) were randomly divided into 5 treatment groups with 6 replicates of 12 birds each and fed for 20 wk. The 6 treatments fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 20, 40, 80, or 160 mg Zn/kg (ZnSO4·H2O). Dietary supplemental level at 80 mg/kg increased egg production (4.3%) and mass (5.7%), and decreased FCR (2.9%) compared to the basal diet, and these indices increased quadratically with increasing Zn supplemental levels (P < 0.05). The shell breaking strength (15.8%) and fracture toughness (10.6%) were higher with the supplementation of Zn at 80 mg/kg than the basal diet, and increased quadratically with Zn supplementation (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation of Zn at 80 mg/kg improved shell ultrastructure by increasing total (9.0%) and effective thickness (14.2%) and decreasing mammillary thickness (12.0%), and their responses were quadratic with increasing Zn levels (P < 0.05). The supplementation of Zn affected the calcium contents in plasma, tibias and ulna, ulna phosphorus content, and linear and quadratic effects were observed, and higher values were observed with 160 mg/kg Zn supplementation than control (P < 0.05). The supplemental Zn level at 80 mg/kg increased shell effective thickness in growth stage (P < 0.05), and shell calcium and phosphorus content in initial and growth stages (P < 0.05). Dietary Zn supplementation did not affect the gene expression of Ca2+ transporters in the eggshell gland, but affected the expression of HCO3- exchanger in initial and growth stage (P < 0.05). Overall, dietary Zn supplementation could improve productive performance and shell quality in laying ducks at late phase of production, and calcium metabolism and deposition were modulated by Zn influencing HCO3- secretion and thus affecting shell ultrastructure and quality. A supplemental level of 80 mg/kg Zn in the diet with a basal content of 34.0 mg/kg was optimal, and higher level (160 mg/kg) decreased shell calcium deposition by depressing its metabolism.

This study evaluated the effects of barley inclusion and glucanase supplementation on the productive performance and digestive function in laying ducks. The experiment used a randomized design with a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement of 5 graded levels of barley (0%, 15%, 30%, 45% and 60%) with or without 1.5 g/kg ß-1,3-1,4-glucanase (15,000 U/kg). During the experimental period of 120 d, the weight and total number of eggs within each pen were recorded daily, and egg quality was determined every 4 wk. At the end of the experiment, 3 randomly selected ducks within each replicate were sacrificed, then duodenal digesta and jejunal mucosa was collected. Dietary inclusion of barley had no effects on egg production, daily egg mass or FCR, but supplementation with glucanase improved egg production and FCR (P < 0.01). Barley did not affect feed intake of laying ducks, but glucanase tended to increase feed intake (P = 0.09). Neither barley nor ß-glucanase had effects on the egg quality variables, except for yolk color score, which was decreased with increasing barley supplementation. Glucanase, but not barley, increased the activity of chymotrypsin and amylase in duodenal digesta. Barley inclusion affected the activity of alkaline phosphatase and maltase in jejunal mucosa (P < 0.05), but ß-glucanase had no effects on the activity of these brush border enzymes. Barley inclusion increased the glucan content in duodenal digesta, but supplementation of glucanase to barley-based diet reduced digesta glucan content and reduced total volatile fatty acids and increased the proportion of acetic acid in cecal contents. The results indicate that, without glucanase, the optimal dietary barley level in the diets of laying ducks is about 13% for maximal production performance; glucanase supplementation of the barley diets improved production performance, probably through enhancing digestive function.

Many studies have shown that productivity, immune system, antioxidant status, and meat and egg quality can be optimized by dietary supplementation with amino acids that are not usually added to poultry diets. Understanding the effects of these amino acids may encourage feed manufacturers and poultry producers to include them as additives. One of these amino acids is tryptophan (Trp). The importance of Trp is directly related to its role in protein anabolism and indirectly related to its metabolites such as serotonin and melatonin. Thus, Trp could affect the secretion of hormones, development of immune organs, meat and egg production, and meat and egg quality in poultry raised under controlled or stressed conditions. Therefore, this review discusses the main roles of Trp in poultry production and its mode (s) of action in order to help poultry producers decide whether they need to add Trp to poultry diets. Further areas of research are also identified to address information gaps.

Phycosphere hosts the boundary of unique holobionts harboring dynamic algae-bacteria interactions. During our investigating the microbial consortia composition of phycosphere microbiota (PM) derived from diverse harmful algal blooms (HAB) dinoflagellates, a novel rod-shaped, motile and faint yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated as strain LZ-6 T, was isolated from HAB Alexandrium catenella LZT09 which produces high levels paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and two housekeeping genes, rpoA and pheS sequences showed that the novel isolate shared the highest gene similarity with Marinobacter shengliensis CGMCC 1.12758 T (99.6%) with the similarity values of 99.6%, 99.9% and 98.5%, respectively. Further phylogenomic calculations of average nucleotide identity (ANI), average amino acid identity (AAI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strains LZ-6 T and the type strain of M. shengliensis were 95.9%, 96.4% and 68.5%, respectively. However, combined phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characterizations revealed that the new isolate was obviously different from the type strain of M. shengliensis. The obtained taxonomic evidences supported that strain LZ-6 T represents a novel subspecies of M. shengliensis, for which the name is proposed, Marinobacter shengliensis subsp. alexandrii subsp. nov. with the type strain LZ-6 T (= CCTCC AB 2018388TT = KCTC 72197 T). This proposal automatically creates Marinobacter shengliensis subsp. shengliensis for which the type strain is SL013A34A2T (= LMG 27740 T = CGMCC 1.12758 T).

RESUMO

The increased consumption of protein derived from poultry demands greater poultry production, but increased poultry production (meat and eggs) is dependent on the fertility of the parent flocks. Clearly, the fertility of poultry flocks is associated with the fertility of both males and females, but the low numbers of males used for natural or artificial insemination mean that their role is more important. Thus, enhancing the semen volume, sperm concentration, viability, forward motility, and polyunsaturated fatty acids in sperm, as well as protecting against oxidative damage, could help to optimize the sperm membrane functionality, mitochondrial activity, and sperm-egg penetration, and thus fertility. Therefore, this review summarizes the nutritional factors that could improve the fertility of poultry males as well as their associated mechanisms to allow poultry producers to overcome low-fertility problems, especially in aging poultry males, thereby obtaining beneficial impacts on the poultry production industry.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary iron (Fe) on reproductive performance of Chinese Yellow broiler breeder hens during the egg-laying period. A total of 480, 55-wk-old hens were balanced for laying rate and then randomly allotted into 5 groups, each with 6 replicates (8 cages for each replicate with 2 birds per cage). The trial was for 10 wk. Birds were fed diet with 44, 58, 72, 86, or 100 mg/kg Fe contained feed. Laying performance, biochemical indices and reproductive hormones in plasma, egg quality, ovarian and oviductal variables, tibial breaking strength, and hatching performance were determined. The key performance variables hematocrit, hatchability of live embryos, and tibial breaking strength were selected for analysis by quadratic polynomial (QP) and broken-line (BL) regressions to better determine optimal dietary Fe level. Qualified egg (excluding those with double-yolk, soft-shell, cracked, very small malformed, etc.) rate tended to decrease with the lowest and highest dietary Fe levels. Hematocrit was affected (P = 0.003) by dietary Fe, along with linear (P = 0.017) and quadratic (P = 0.002) effect. There was a significant effect (P = 0.034) of dietary Fe level on tibial breaking strength of breeder hens with a quadratic (P = 0.044) effect. Breeder hens fed inadequate (44 mg/kg diet) or excess (100 mg/kg) Fe both had lower (P < 0.05) tibial breaking strength compared to that of hens fed 86 mg/kg Fe. Hatchability of live embryos was affected (P = 0.004) by diet; with both linear (P = 0.014) and quadratic (P = 0.001) effects. Maximal hatching of live embryos occurred with diets of breeder hens containing 72 mg/kg Fe. From the QP and BL models fitted to hematocrit, tibial breaking strength, and hatchability variables, the optimal dietary Fe level for Chinese Yellow broiler breeder hens in the laying period was 70-90 mg/kg. The daily Fe fed (allowance) was about 8-11 mg.

The objective of three trials was to investigate the effects of dietary Fe on growth performance, immune organ indices and meat quality of Chinese yellow broilers during the whole growth period. A total of 1440 1-day-old, 1440 22-day-old, and 1080 43-day-old Lingnan yellow male broilers were randomly assigned to one of six dietary treatments with six replicates per treatment (40 birds per replicate for both 1 to 21 d and 22 to 42 d, 30 birds for 43 to 63 d). Additional Fe (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mg/kg) was added as FeSO4 • H2O to the three basal diets (calculated Fe 50 mg/kg, analyzed 48.3, 49.1, 48.7 mg/kg, respectively). The calculated final dietary Fe concentrations in Starter, Grower and Finisher phases were 50, 70, 90, 110, 130, and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion rate (FCR) of the broilers were not influenced by the different levels of Fe (p> 0.05). Weight indices of the spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius were not influenced (p > 0.05) by the different levels of Fe during three 21-day experimental periods. Hematocrit, and Fe contents of the liver and kidney were not affected by different levels of Fe (p> 0.05). The diet with 150 mg/kg of Fe increased the a* (relative redness) value of breast muscle compared to the 50 and 70 mg/kg diets at 24 h post mortem (p< 0.05). The diet with 90 mg/kg Fe increased the pH of breast muscle compared to broilers fed 50 or 150 mg/kg Fe (p < 0.05) 45 min after slaughter. The diet with 90 mg/kg Fe decreased drip loss of breast muscle compared to 150 mg/kg Fe (p< 0.05). These data suggest that feeding yellow-feathered broilers on a conventional corn-soy based diet satisfies their requirements without additional Fe at ages 1 to 21, and 22 to 42 d, while 90 mg/kg in the finisher phase improved meat quality, and from the QP (quadratic polynomial) models of the key meat quality variables, pH of breast muscle and drip loss of breast muscle, the optimal dietary Fe level was 89 to 108 mg/kg, and daily Fe fed allowance was 11 to 13 mg in the finisher phase (43 to 63 d).

Lohmann Brown hens (n = 420), at 28 weeks of age, were divided into five dietary treatments, and each treatment included six replicates of 14 laying hens. Dietary crude protein (14%) was presented as the control diet. Dietary L-Thr was added to the control diet for 12 weeks. Dietary Thr levels are 0.43%, 0.49%, 0.57%, 0.66%, and 0.74%, based on digestible base. From 28 to 40 weeks, hen-day egg production presented a quadratic trend to supplementing dietary Thr (R2 = 0.96, p = 0.02), and reached a maximum level at 0.58%. Serum uric acid demonstrated a quadratic trend (R2 = 0.62, p = 0.02) at 0.59%. Both serum total cholesterol and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG-CoA) reductase showed lower levels (p < 0.05) at 0.66% Thr. Serum CuZn-SOD elevated (p < 0.05) at 0.49%, 0.57%, and 0.66% Thr, as compared to the control group, and showed a quadratic trend (R2 = 0.87, p = 0.003) at 0.56%. Supplemental L-Thr decreased (p < 0.05) the expression of ileal HSP70 at 0.66% Thr. In summary, the optimal dietary Thr requirements to optimize egg production, serum uric acid, and serum CuZn-SOD were 0.58%, 0.59%, and 0.56%, respectively, by regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of high ambient temperature affecting meat quality is not clear till now. This study investigated the effect of high ambient temperature on meat quality and nutrition metabolism in finishing pigs. METHODS: All pigs received the same corn-soybean meal diet. A total of 24 Landrace × Large White pigs (60 kg BW, all were female) were assigned to three groups: 22AL (fed ad libitum at 22 °C), 35AL (ad libitum fed at 35 °C), and 22PF (at 22 °C, but fed the amount consumed by pigs raised at 35 °C) and the experiment lasted for 30 days. RESULTS: Feed intake, weight gain, and intramuscular fat (IMF) content of pigs were reduced, both directly by high temperature and indirectly through reduced feed intake. Transcriptome analysis of longissimus dorsi (LM) showed that downregulated genes caused by feed restriction were mainly involved in muscle development and energy metabolism; and upregulated genes were mainly involved in response to nutrient metabolism or extracellular stimulus. Apart from the direct effects of feed restriction, high temperature negatively affected the muscle structure and development, energy, or catabolic metabolism, and upregulated genes were mainly involved in DNA or protein damage or recombination, cell cycle process or biogenesis, stress response, or immune response. CONCLUSION: Both high temperature and reduced feed intake affected growth performance and meat quality. Apart from the effects of reducing feed intake, high temperature per se negatively downregulated cell cycle and upregulated heat stress response. High temperature also decreased the energy or catabolic metabolism level through PPAR signaling pathway.

The presence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in poultry diets decreases the hatchability, hatchling weight, growth rate, meat and egg production, meat and egg quality, vaccination efficiency, as well as impairing the feed conversion ratio and increasing the susceptibility of birds to disease and mortality. AFB1 is transferred from poultry feed to eggs, meat, and other edible parts, representing a threat to the health of consumers because AFB1 is carcinogenic and implicated in human liver cancer. This review considers how AFB1 produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus strains can affect the immune system, antioxidant defense system, digestive system, and reproductive system in poultry, as well as its effects on productivity and reproductive performance. Nutritional factors can offset the effects of AFB1 in poultry and, thus, it is necessary to identify and select suitable additives to address the problems caused by AFB1 in poultry.

Heat stress is a major environmental factor contributing to lower production of poultry. The objective of present study was to evaluate the influence of constant or intermittent high temperature on the production performance and redox status of plasma and hypothalamus in laying ducks. A total of 288 weight- and laying-matched laying ducks were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments (each with 6 replicates of 12 birds): control, pair-fed, constant high temperature (24 h, 34 ± 1°C), and intermittent high temperature (10 h, 34 ± 1°C). Blood and hypothalamic tissue samples were collected on days 1, 21, and 55 to determine redox status. Average daily feed intake and egg weight was reduced (P < 0.001) during imposition of both high-temperature treatments but was not different (P > 0.05) among the treatments during the recovery period. Lower (P < 0.05) egg mass was observed in pair-fed and intermittent high-temperature treatment during high-temperature period and in constant high temperature during the recovery period. Haugh units from high temperature-treated ducks were significantly lower than those from control or pair-fed ducks (P < 0.05) during the high-temperature period. Both models of heat exposure decreased plasma concentrations of glutathione (GSH) at day 1, and constant high temperature decreased plasma activity of GSH peroxidase (GSH-PX) at day 21 (P < 0.05). Hypothalamic expression of antioxidant genes GSH reductase (GR) and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit (Complex Ι) were decreased by both high-temperature treatments at day 1. Hypothalamic expression of genes for pro-oxidant enzymes cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), and cytochrome P450 7A1 (CYP7A1) were decreased (P < 0.05) by both models of high temperature but transcripts of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) of ducks that were pair-fed or were exposed to constant high temperature were increased at day 21. The transcripts of NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX-1) were decreased at day 1 by both high-temperature treatments (P < 0.05) but increased during the recovery period. These results indicate that, for laying ducks, intermittent high temperature caused much greater negative production performance effects than constant high temperature during high-temperature period, but laying ducks exposed to constant high temperature tend to take longer to recover their production performance. High-temperature stress, either constant or intermittent, altered hypothalamic expression of antioxidation and pro-oxidation genes.

This experiment studied the effects of dietary protein sources and levels on the gut health of piglets, pH value, and concentrations of microbial metabolites (ammonia-N, volatile fatty acids [VFA], and polyamines) in the distal colonic and proximal colonic digesta of piglets weaned at 21 d of age. A total of 150 early-weaned piglets were allotted randomly to 5 diets: 1) control diet (CT; 17% CP), 2) CT formulated with more soy protein concentrate (SPC19; 19% CP), 3) more fish meal (FM19; 19% CP), 4) CT formulated with more soy protein concentrate (SPC23; 23% CP), and 5) more fish meal (FM23; 23%CP). Results showed high protein level increased fecal score (P < 0.05), but different protein sources did not (P > 0.05). The pH value and ammonia-N concentration of digesta in the proximal and distal colon of FM23 were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of CT. Acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and valeric acid concentrations in the proximal colon of FM23 exceeded those of CT, SPC19, and FM19 (P < 0.05); however, isobutyric acid and isovaleric acid were not affected (P > 0.05). Histamine and spermidine concentrations of FM23 were higher than those of other treatments (P < 0.05). Propionic acid and butyric acid concentrations in the distal colon were higher of FM23 than of FM19 (P < 0.05); putrescine, histamine and spermidine were higher of FM23 than of LP and FM19 (P < 0.05). It was concluded that high dietary CP content increased microbial metabolites (ammonia-N, histamine, putrescine) in colonic digesta and aggravated piglets' diarrhea.
