RESUMO

Avian H9N2 viruses have wide host range among the influenza A viruses. However, knowledge of H9N2 mammalian adaptation is limited. To explore the molecular basis of the adaptation to mammals, we performed serial lung passaging of the H9N2 strain A/chicken/Hunan/8.27 YYGK3W3-OC/2018 (3W3) in mice and identified six mutations in the hemagglutinin (HA) and polymerase acidic (PA) proteins. Mutations L226Q, T511I, and A528V of HA were responsible for enhanced pathogenicity and viral replication in mice; notably, HA-L226Q was the key determinant. Mutations T97I, I545V, and S594G of PA contributed to enhanced polymerase activity in mammalian cells and increased viral replication levels in vitro and in vivo. PA-T97I increased viral polymerase activity by accelerating the viral polymerase complex assembly. Our findings revealed that the viral replication was affected by the presence of PA-97I and/or PA-545V in combination with a triple-point HA mutation. Furthermore, the double- and triple-point PA mutations demonstrated antagonistic effect on viral replication when combined with HA-226Q. Notably, any combination of PA mutations, along with double-point HA mutations, resulted in antagonistic effect on viral replication. We also observed antagonism in viral replication between PA-545V and PA-97I, as well as between HA-528V and PA-545V. Our findings demonstrated that several antagonistic mutations in HA and PA proteins affect viral replication, which may contribute to the H9N2 virus adaptation to mice and mammalian cells. These findings can potentially contribute to the monitoring of H9N2 field strains for assessing their potential risk in mammals.

Introduction: Seed priming is a pre-sowing seed treatment that is beneficial for rice seed germination and seedling growth, but the reduced seed longevity after seed priming greatly limited its adoption. The deterioration of primed seeds showed large differences among different studies, and the priming method might play an important role in regulating the deterioration speed of primed seeds. However, whether and how the priming method affected the deterioration of primed rice seeds during storage remains unknown. Methods: In this study, two typical seed priming methods, namely hydropriming (HP) and osmopriming (PEG) were compared under artificially accelerated aging conditions, the changes in germination performance, starch metabolism, seed respiration and reactive oxygen species accumulation before and after accelerated aging were determined. Results and discussion: Hydroprimed rice seeds exhibited significantly faster deterioration speed than that of PEG-primed seeds in terms of germination speed and percentage. Meanwhile, α-amylase activity and total soluble sugar content in hydroprimed seeds were reduced by 19.3% and 10.0% respectively after aging, as compared with PEG-primed seeds. Such effects were strongly associated with the increased reactive oxygen generation and lipid peroxidation, as the content of superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde in hydroprimed seeds were 4.4%, 12.3% and 13.7% higher than those in PEG-primed seeds after aging, such effect could be attributed to the increased respiratory metabolism in hydroprimed seeds. In addition, the simultaneous use of N-acetylcysteine with HP and PEG priming greatly inhibited the deterioration of primed rice seeds, suggesting that the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species may be the key factor affecting the speed of deterioration in primed rice seeds during storage.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of red and blue lights on the photomorphogenesis and photosynthetic traits of rice seedlings. The rice seedlings were cultured with red light (R), blue light (B), combined red and blue lights (R3B1/R1B1/R1B3), and white light (CK) as the control. The combined application of red and blue lights could promote the growth of rice seedlings to varying degrees; enhance photosynthesis by increasing the seedling leaf area, chlorophyll content, and chlorophyll fluorescence; improve root characteristics by increasing root number, root volume, and root activity; and thus increase the dry matter accumulation of rice seedlings. In addition, the combination of red and blue lights could regulate the expression of genes related to photosynthesis in rice leaves, affect the activity of the Rubisco enzyme, and then affect the photosynthesis of rice seedlings. These results indicate that red and blue lights have direct synergistic effects, which can regulate the growth of rice seedlings and promote the morphogenesis of rice seedlings. The combined application of red and blue lights can be used to supplement the light in rice-factory seedling raising.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of light quality on growth, carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and antioxidant defense system of rice seedlings. Six light conditions were employed, including white (W), red (R), blue (B), combined LED of R and B at 3:1 (R3B1), combined LED of R and B at 1:1 (R1B1), as well as combined LED of R and B at 1:3 (R1B3). Combined application of red light and blue light could promote the growth of rice seedling leaves and roots under low light stress to varying degrees, increase the photosynthetic area by increasing the leaf area, improve the root characteristics by increasing the root volume, and increase the dry matter accumulation of rice seedlings. In addition, the combination of red light and blue light could increase carbon and nitrogen metabolites in rice seedling leaves, regulate the expression of genes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism and enzyme activity, and enhance the antioxidant enzyme activity of rice seedlings. These results indicate that red light and blue light directly have synergistic effects which can regulate the carbon and nitrogen metabolism of rice seedlings, promote the morphogenesis of rice seedlings under low light stress, and promote growth, which has never been reported in previous studies. This study is a new discovery in the application of light quality in crop production and provides new avenues to enhance crop stress resistance. However, further study is needed to explore the physio-biochemical and molecular mechanisms of light quality in crop production.

Purpose: Total extraperitoneal prosthesis (TEP) is one of the most commonly used laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair procedures. This work aims to report the application of membrane anatomy to TEP and its value in intraoperative space expansion. Methods: The clinical data of 105 patients, from January 2018 to May 2020, with inguinal hernia who were treated with TEP (58 patients in the General Department of the Second Hospital of Sanming City, Fujian Province, and 47 patients in the General Department of the Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University) were retrospectively analyzed. Results: All surgeries were successfully completed under the guidance of the concept of preperitoneal membrane anatomy. The operation time was 27.5 ± 9.0 min, blood loss was 5.2 ± 0.8 ml, and the peritoneum was damaged in six cases. The postoperative hospital stay was 1.5 ± 0.6 days, and five cases of postoperative seroma occurred, all self-absorbed. During the follow-up period of 7-59 months, there was no case of chronic pain and recurrence. Conclusion: The membrane anatomy at the correct level is the premise of a bloodless operation to expand the space while protecting adjacent tissues and organs to avoid complications.

Background: Psychogenic erectile dysfunction (PED) can seriously affect emotional and marital wellbeing. Electroacupuncture (EA) seems an effective method for treating PED. However, the central mechanisms underlying PED and the beneficial effects of EA treatment are unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the central mechanisms of PED and to examine the impact of EA on erectile function. Methods: We recruited 14 PED patients and 14 matched normal controls (NCs). PED patients underwent twice rs-fMRI scans, respectively, pre- and post-treatment. The NCs only completed one rs-fMRI scan. We used the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) to compare spontaneous neural activity between the PED patients and NCs, and to examine the differences between the pre- and post-EA treatment scans in the PED patients. Results: Scores on the IIEF5, QEQ, and SEAR improved after EA treatment. Compared with the NCs, PED patients showed increased fALFF in the right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), right supplementary motor area (SMA), and left middle occipital gyrus. Most of these regions are closely implicated in sexual inhibition. The results of the correlation analysis results indicated that the fALFF of the right PCC was negatively correlated with IIEF5 scores. After treatment, fALFF values were substantially lower in the left triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus, right DLPFC, right SMA, bilateral PCC and the orbital part of the middle frontal gyrus, and higher in the left middle temporal gyrus and left caudate nucleus. These regions mainly belong to the default mode network (DMN), executive control network and primary sensory motor network. The results of the correlation analysis indicated a positive association between the changes in IIEF5 score and changes in the fALFF value in the right PCC after EA treatment. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study highlights that PED patients have abnormal patterns of activity in the right PCC, right DLPFC, and right SMA mainly involved in the DMN, executive central network, and sensory motor network which could lead to a higher levels of sexual inhibition. EA might regulate the process of sexual inhibition to improve erection function in PED patients probably by modulating spontaneous brain activity in the DMN, executive central network, and sensory motor network.

In present study, sodium salt of α-naphthalene acetic acid (NA), potassium salt of fulvic acid (KF) and their combinations were applied to the growth substrates of tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under chilling stress. The changes in aboveground biomass, root attributes, pigment contents, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthesis, osmotic regulation substances, and antioxidant enzymes activity of the tomato seedlings in response to NA and KF were investigated. The application of NA, KF and their combination could promote the growth of plant height and stem diameter of tomato seedlings under chilling stress to varying degrees, and improve root characteristics by increasing root volume, root length and root activity, and increase dry matter accumulation. In addition, the combined use of NA and KF improved the seedling leaf chlorophyll content, qP, Fv/Fm, ΦPSII , Pn and increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the tomato plants. The above results suggested a synergistic effect between NA and KF to stimulate the seedlings growth and to enhance the ROS scavenging ability of tomato, which has never been reported in previous research before. However, further researches are needed to explore the physiological and molecular mechanism underlying the synergistic effect between NA and KF.

Forage-food dual-purpose ratoon rice cropping (FFRR) is used to balance forage demands with ratoon rice grain yields, that is whole plant (stem and sheath, panicles) cuttings in the main season are used as forage, and rice in the regeneration season is used as food. In this study, the local ratoon rice production system as the control, we were carried out the field experiment of cultivation practices (cutting time and cutting height), and investigated the system productivity, economic benefits, carbon footprints and energy use efficiency. The energy use efficiency, energy productivity and energy profitability increased with cutting time delay, and cutting height decreased. Significant differences of these index were observed among the treatments for cutting time and cutting height (p < 0.05). Carbon efficiency and carbon sustainability index was increase with cutting time delay, and there was significant difference among the treatment of cutting time in 2018 (p < 0.05), the minimum carbon footprint of FFRR was 78.6 kgCO2 t-1 averagely at the cutting time of 30 days after the flowering stage. In 2018, the maximum net income of FFRR was 30,577 CNY hm-2 at a cutting time of 30 days after the flowering stage while the stubble height was 10 cm, and dependent on the forage yield of the main crop; in 2019, the maximum net income of FFRR was 27,326 CNY hm-2 at a cutting time of 10 days after the flowering stage while the stubble height was 10 cm, and dependent on the grain yield of the ratoon crop. Therefore, the optimal cultivation practice of the FFRR (cutting at 30 days after the flowering stage and with a stubble height of 10 cm) showed higher carbon and energy use efficiency, economic benefits of the FFRR were fluctuated with the price of forage of the main crop and rice grain of the ratoon crop.

Nitrogen plays an important role in rice growth, and determination of nitrogen content in rice plants is of great significance in assessing plant nutritional status and allowing precision cultivation. Traditional chemical methods for determining nitrogen content have the disadvantages of destructive sampling and lengthy analysis times. Here, the feasibility of rapid nitrogen content analysis by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of rice plants was studied. Spectral data from 447 rice samples at several growth stages were used to establish a predictive model. Different spectral preprocessing methods and characteristic selection methods were compared, such as interval partial least-squares (iPLS), synergy interval partial least-squares (SiPLS), and moving-window partial least-squares (mwPLS). The SiPLS method exhibited better performance than mwPLS or iPLS. Specifically, the combination of four subintervals (7, 26, 27, and 28), with characteristic bands at 5299-4451 cm-1 and 10445-10423 cm-1, resulted in the best model. The optimal SiPLS model had a correlation coefficient of 0.9533 and a root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.1952 on the prediction set. Compared to using the full spectra, using SiPLS reduced the number of characteristics by 87 % in the model, and RMSEP was reduced from 0.2284 to 0.1952. The results demonstrate that NIR spectroscopy combined with the SiPLS algorithm can be applied to quickly determine nitrogen content in rice plants. This study provides a technical framework to guide future precision agriculture efforts with respect to nitrogen application.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is used to treat subjects with occipital neuralgia, which is 1 of the main causes of occipital pain; however, its effect is conflicting. Hence, the current study aims to evaluate the effects of acupuncture in the treatment of occipital neuralgia. METHODS: In a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, OVID, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Wanfang databases, and Google Scholar until July 2021, 15 studies aimed to evaluate the effects of acupuncture in the treatment of occipital neuralgia were included. Human-related trials were considered in different languages. The size of the study was not considered a limit for its inclusion and the study intervention should focus on comparing the impact of acupuncture in the intervention group compared with the control group.The odds ratio (OR) and the mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with a random or fixed-effect model for different subgroup analyses. Publication bias was assessed using the Egger test, while the risk of bias was assessed using the Review manager software. RESULTS: Acupuncture had a significantly higher effective rate of treatment (OR, 5.40; 95% CI, 2.48 to 11.77, P < .001) compared to control in the treatment of occipital neuralgia and lower visual analogue scale (MD, -2.45; 95% CI, -2.69 to -2.21, P < .001). Acupuncture plus medication had a significantly higher effective rate of treatment (OR, 3.96; 95% CI, 2.10 to 7.47, P < .001) compared to medication in the treatment of occipital neuralgia. Acupuncture analysis for safety issues showed a significant reduction of adverse events compared with the medication group. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture alone or acupuncture plus medication had a significantly beneficial effect on the effective rate of treatment, safety and visual analog scale compared to medication in the treatment of occipital neuralgia. Further studies are required to validate these findings.

Introduction: Acupuncture is an effective and safe therapy for patients with migraine without aura (MwoA), but only 41-59% of patients show improvement with this treatment. Screening positive responders to acupuncture treatment for MwoA can ensure that healthcare resources can be appropriately targeted to specific patients who would most benefit. The objective of this study is to determine whether the structure and functional activity in certain brain regions can predict analgesia response in patients with MwoA who receive acupuncture treatment. Methods and analysis: A total of 72 patients with MwoA and 72 healthy controls (HCs) will be enrolled in this study. Resting-state structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data will be collected from each participant at baseline. Patients with MwoA will undergo 12 sessions of acupuncture treatment for 8 weeks, twice per week in the first 4 weeks and once per week for the last 4 weeks. The follow-up will be 12 weeks. The number of days with migraine, frequency of migraine attacks, and average visual analog scale scores will be recorded in detail at weeks 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 and at the end of follow-up (week 20). The positive response rate will be calculated as the proportion of patients with ≥50% reduction in the number of migraine days during follow-up compared with baseline. Machine learning methods will be applied to classify patients with MwoA and HCs and predict patients with response or non-response to acupuncture treatment based on multimodal MRI parameters, such as gray matter volume, regional homogeneity, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation, fractional anisotropy, and mean diffusivity. Discussion: This study aims to establish brain structural and functional characteristics that can identify patients with MwoA who will derive analgesia benefits from acupuncture treatment. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a recently discovered kind of regulatory RNAs that have emerged as critical biomarkers of various types of cancers. Metabolic reprogramming has gradually been identified as a distinct hallmark of cancer cells. The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) plays an indispensable role in satisfying the bioenergetic and biosynthetic demands of cancer cells. However, little is known about the role of circRNAs and PPP in colorectal cancer (CRC). The novel circ_0003215 was identified at low levels in CRC and was negatively correlated with larger tumor size, higher TNM stage, and lymph node metastasis. The decreased level of circ_0003215 was resulted from the RNA degradation by m6A writer protein YTHDF2. A series of functional assays demonstrated that circ_0003215 inhibited cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and CRC tumor metastasis in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, circ_0003215 regulated the expression of DLG4 via sponging miR-663b, thereby inducing the metabolic reprogramming in CRC. Mechanismly, DLG4 inhibited the PPP through the K48-linked ubiquitination of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). Taken together, we have identified m6A-modified circ_0003215 as a novel regulator of metabolic glucose reprogramming that inhibited the PPP and the malignant phenotype of CRC via the miR-663b/DLG4/G6PD axis.

Active surveillance of avian influenza virus (AIV) in wetlands and lakes is important for exploring the gene pool in wild birds. Through active surveillance from 2015 through 2019, 10,900 samples from wild birds in central China were collected, and 89 AIVs were isolated, including 2 subtypes of highly pathogenic AIV and 12 of low-pathogenic AIV; H9N2 and H6Ny were the dominant subtypes. Phylogenetic analysis of the isolates demonstrated that extensive intersubtype reassortments and frequent intercontinental gene exchange occurred in AIVs. AIV gene segments persistently circulated in several migration seasons, but interseasonal persistence of the whole genome was rare. The whole genomes of one H6N6 and polymerase basic 2 (PB2), polymerase acidic (PA), hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), M, and nonstructural (NS) genes of one H9N2 virus were found to be of poultry origin, suggesting a spillover of AIVs from poultry to wild birds. Importantly, one H9N2 virus only bound to human-type receptor, and one H1N1, four H6, and seven H9N2 viruses possessed dual receptor-binding capacity. Nineteen of 20 representative viruses tested could replicate in the lungs of mice without preadaptation, which poses a clear threat of infection in humans. Together, our study highlights the need for intensive AIV surveillance. IMPORTANCE Influenza virus surveillance in wild birds plays an important role in the early recognition and control of the virus. However, the AIV gene pool in wild birds in central China along the East Asian-Australasian flyway has not been well studied. Here, we conducted a 5-year AIV active surveillance in this region. Our data revealed the long-term circulation and prevalence of AIVs in wild birds in central China, and we observed that intercontinental gene exchange of AIVs is more frequent and continuous than previously thought. Spillover events from poultry to wild bird were observed in H6 and H9 viruses. In addition, in 20 representative viruses, 12 viruses could bind human-type receptors, and 19 viruses could replicate in mice without preadaption. Our work highlights the potential threat of wild bird AIVs to public health.

Upon influenza A virus (IAV) infection, the IAV progeny ribonucleoprotein complex, with a defective viral genome, is sensed by DNA-dependent activator of interferon-regulatory factor (DAI). DAI initiates the recruitment of an array of proteins to form a multiprotein platform (PANoptosome), which triggers apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis during IAV infection. However, the mechanisms mediating the assembly of the PANoptosome are unclear. Here, we identified a scaffold protein, sperm-associated antigen 9 (SPAG9), which could interact with DAI to promote cell death during IAV infection. We further demonstrated that the cell death enhanced by SPAG9 was achieved through the DAI/SPAG9/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) axis, which could promote IAV-induced DAI-mediated cell death, including apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis. Our data further showed that the DAI/SPAG9/JNK signaling pathway enhanced the interactions among receptor-interacting serine/threonine kinase 1 (RIPK1), RIPK3, and DAI, thereby promoting IAV-induced PANoptosome formation. Overall, our study for the first time revealed a feed-forward circuit signaling pathway that enhanced IAV-induced DAI-mediated cell death, provided insights into the molecular mechanisms of cell death, and established therapeutic targets to address infectious and inflammatory diseases. IMPORTANCE Upon influenza A virus (IAV) infection, DAI is activated, recruits downstream proteins to assemble a multiprotein platform (PANoptosome), and then triggers cell death. Until now, the protein composition and assembly mechanism of the PANoptosome during IAV infection had not been elucidated. Using proximity labeling and mass spectrometry technology, we identified SPAG9 as a novel component of the PANoptosome and confirmed that SPAG9 promotes IAV-induced cell death by enhancing the interaction among RIPK1, RIPK3, and DAI. Our study will broaden the knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of cell death.

G protein subunit ß1 (GNB1), the beta subunit of the G protein family, plays an important role in regulating transmembrane signal transduction. Although a recent study has demonstrated that GNB1 can bind the matrix protein 1 (M1) to facilitate M1 transport to budding sites and promote the release of progeny influenza A virus (IAV), whether the GNB1 protein has other functions in IAV replication requires further study. Here, we found that GNB1 promoted IAV replication, as virus yield decreased in GNB1 knockdown or knockout cells. GNB1 interacted with polymerase subunits PB2, PB1, and PA. Overexpressed GNB1 facilitated PB2 binding to importin α3, α5, and α7 promoting the nuclear import of PB2, enhancing viral RNA synthesis and polymerase activity. Altogether, our results demonstrated that GNB1 positively regulates virus replication by interacting with polymerase subunits and facilitating the nuclear import of PB2, which provide novel insights into the molecular mechanism of IAV. IMPORTANCE Until now, there has been only one article on the role of GNB1 in IAV budding. No study has investigated the role of GNB1 in IAV replication. In this study, our research demonstrated that GNB1 could increase the interaction between PB2 and the importin α isoform and mediate the nuclear import of PB2. Therefore, GNB1 could promote viral replication and transcription. Our results provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of viral replication and provide potential antiviral drug targets.

Functional Dyspepsia (FD) is a common functional gastrointestinal disease, which can reduce the quality of life in patients. Prior research has indicated that insula is closely related to FD and that acupuncture can regulate the functional connectivity (FC) of FD. Therefore, we hypothesized that acupuncture on FD was effected through the insular pathway. To test our hypothesis, we performed electroacupuncture (EA) on FD rat models and then examined the FC between insula and other brain regions through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Seven-day-old male infant Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into control group, FD model group, and FD acupuncture group, with twelve rats per group (n = 36). Upon establishing successful models, the FD acupuncture group was subjected to EA intervention using Stomach back-shu (BL-21) and front-mu (RN-12) points for ten consecutive days for durations of 20 minutes each day. After intervention, each group was subject to rs-fMRI. The digital image data obtained were analyzed using FC analysis methods. Subsequently, gastric ligation was performed to measure gastric emptying rates. Before EA intervention, the FD model group exhibited decreased functional connections between the insula and a number of brain regions. After EA intervention, FD acupuncture group exhibited increasing FC between insula and regions when compared to the FD model group, such as the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), hippocampal CA3 (CA3), polymorphic layer of dentate gyrus (PoDG), caudate putamen (CPu), and oral pontine reticular nuclei (PnO) (P < 0.05); decreasing FC was also exhibited between insula and regions such as the bilateral primary and secondary motor cortexes (M1/2), paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVA), and limbic cortex (LC). These findings indicate that the effective treatment of FD using EA may be through regulating the abnormal FC between insula and several brain regions, in particular CA3, PoDG, and PVA.

INTRODUCTION: Acupuncture is an efficacious and safe treatment choice for migraine prevention. Results from clinical trials have shown that non-specific effects play an important role in acupuncture's efficacy. To date, however, there is no evidence available quantitatively evaluating the effect of non-specific effects, such as patients' expectations and beliefs for acupuncturists, on acupuncture efficacy, necessitating further exploration. METHODS: A total of 156 patients with migraine without aura (MwoA) will be randomized to either junior or senior acupuncturist group, at a ratio of 1:1. The study will last 24 weeks, for each patient, comprising baseline, treatment, and follow-up phases lasting 4, 8, and 12 weeks, respectively. All patients will undergo 12 sections of acupuncture treatment delivered by either a junior or senior acupuncturist following the same acupuncture prescription and manipulation. The primary outcomes will be changes in the number of migraine days and frequency of attacks per 4 weeks cycle, relative to the baseline. Secondary outcomes will include severity of headache pain, quality of life, anxiety/depression levels, and use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) per 4 weeks cycle, compared to the baseline, as well as adverse events and rate of positive response to treatment. Prior to randomization of patients into junior or senior acupuncturist groups, the Acupuncture Expectations Evaluation Scale (AES) will be used to evaluate their expectations and belief with regards to acupuncture efficacy delivered by senior or junior acupuncturists. DISCUSSION: Results from this clinical randomized controlled trial will help to quantitatively evaluate the extent of the effect of acupuncture treatment delivered by a senior or junior acupuncturist (high relative to low expectations) in migraine patients. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This trial has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards and Ethics Committees of Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Approval No. 2020KL-058).

Using symbiotic farming methods [cover crops and chicken grazing (+ C)] in a winter fallow field, we found that the soil organic matter and total nitrogen of the + C treatment were 5.2% and 26.6% higher, respectively, than those of a treatment with cover crops and no chicken grazing (- C). The annual rice grain yield of the + C treatment was 3.8% higher than that of the - C treatment and 12.3% higher than that of the bare fallow field (CK), while the annual CH4 emissions of the + C treatment were 26.9% lower than those of the - C treatment and 10.6% lower than those of the CK treatment. The 100-year global warming potential of the + C treatment was 6.2% lower than that of the - C treatment. Therefore, the use of winter cover crops and chicken grazing in a winter fallow field was effective at reducing CH4 emissions and significantly improving soil nutrients and rice yield.
